[Surpanakha meets Rama --reveals her identity -- expresses her desire to be his wife]

ಕೃತಾಭಿಷೇಕೋ ರಾಮಸ್ತು ಸೀತಾ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರೇವ ಚ.

ತಸ್ಮಾದ್ಗೋದಾವರೀತೀರಾತ್ತತೋ ಜಗ್ಮುಸ್ವಮಾಶ್ರಮಮ್৷৷3.17.1৷৷


ಕೃತಾಭಿಷೇಕಃ bath over, ರಾಮಸ್ತು Rama too, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರೇವ ಚ and also Lakshmana, ತತಃ then, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefrom, ಗೋದಾವರೀತೀರಾತ್ from the bank of Godavari, ಸ್ವಮ್ their, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went.

Ablution over, Rama, accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana, went back from the bank of the river Godabari to their hermitage.
ಆಶ್ರಮಂ ತಮುಪಾಗಮ್ಯ ರಾಘವಸ್ಸಹ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ.

ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪೌರ್ವಾಹ್ಣಿಕಂ ಕರ್ಮ ಪರ್ಣಶಾಲಾಮುಪಾಗಮತ್৷৷3.17.2৷৷


ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ accompanied by Lakshmana, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ತಮ್ that, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಉಪಾಗಮ್ಯ on reaching, ಪೌರ್ವಾಹ್ಣಿಕಮ್ rituals to be performed in the forenoon, ಕರ್ಮ rituals, ಕೃತ್ವಾ after doing, ಪರ್ಣಶಾಲಾಮ್ cottage thatched with leaves, ಉಪಾಗಮತ್ went in.

On reaching the hermitage, Rama and Lakshmana performed the forenoon rituals and entered the leaf-thatched cottage.
ಉವಾಸ ಸುಖಿತಸ್ತತ್ರ ಪೂಜ್ಯಮಾನೋ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿಃ.

ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿಃ by ascetics, ಪೂಜ್ಯಮಾನಃ worshipped by, ತತ್ರ there, ಸುಖಿತಃ peacefully, ಉವಾಸ stayed, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ with Lakshmana, ವಿವಿಧಾಃ diverse, ಕಥಾಃ talks, ಚಕಾರ making.

Honoured by the ascetics , Rama stayed there peacefully with brother Lakshmana,
discussing diverse matters (from time to time).

ವಿರರಾಜ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಯಾ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಾಃ ಇವ৷৷3.17.4৷৷


ಸೀತಯಾ ಸಹ along with Sita, ಪರ್ಣಶಾಲಾಯಾಮ್ in the cottage, ಆಸೀನಃ seated, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ long-armed, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಚಿತ್ರಯಾ with the constellation Chitra, ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಾಃ ಇವ like the Moon, ವಿರರಾಜ appeared.

Long-armed Rama seated with Sita in the cottage, appeared like the Moon in conjunction with constellation Chitra.
ತಥಾಸೀನಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಕಥಾಸಂಸಕ್ತಚೇತಸಃ.

ತಂ ದೇಶಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಕಾಚಿದಾಜಗಾಮ ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾ৷৷3.17.5৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಕಥಾಸಂಸಕ್ತಚೇತಸಃ engrossed in conversation, ತಥಾ like that, ಆಸೀನಸ್ಯ while he was sitting, ಕಾಚಿತ್ one, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ demoness, ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾ by chance, ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ to that place, ಆಜಗಾಮ came.

While Rama was thus seated, engrossed in conversation, there incidentally appeared a demoness.
ಸಾ ತು ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾ ನಾಮ ದಶಗ್ರೀವಸ್ಯ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ.

ಭಗಿನೀ ರಾಮಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ದದರ್ಶ ತ್ರಿದಶೋಪಮಮ್৷৷3.17.6৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ demon, ದಶಗ್ರೀವಸ್ಯ of the ten-headed (Ravana), ಭಗಿನೀ sister, ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾ ನಾಮ by name Surpanakha, ಸಾ ತು she, ತ್ರಿದಶೋಪಮಮ್ resembling god, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ near, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

Surpanakha, sister of the ten-headed demon (Ravana) approached Rama shining like a god.

ಸಿಂಹೋರಸ್ಕಮ್ whose chest was like that of a lion, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಮ್ long-armed, ಪದ್ಮಪತ್ರನಿಭೇಕ್ಷಣಮ್ whose eyes resembled lotus petals, ಆಜಾನುಬಾಹುಮ್ knee-long arms, ದೀಪ್ತಾಸ್ಯಮ್ with a glowing face, ಅತೀವ vey much, ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಮ್ pleasing to look at, ಗಜವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಗಮನಮ್ who walked with the gait of an elephant, ಜಟಾಮಣ್ಡಲಧಾರಿಣಮ್ having matted hair, ಸುಕುಮಾರಮ್ delicate, ಮಹಾಸತ್ವಮ್ very strong , ಪಾರ್ಥಿವವ್ಯಞ್ಜನಾನ್ವಿತಮ್ endowed with royal traits, ಇನ್ದೀವರಶ್ಯಾಮಮ್ blue-lotus-like complexion, ಕನ್ದರ್ಪಸದೃಶಪ್ರಭಮ್ glowing like the god of love, ಇನ್ದ್ರೋಪಮಮ್ as Indra, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ demoness, ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಾ infatuated, ಬಭೂವ became.

The demoness was infatuated with Rama, whose chest was like that of a lion, who was strong-armed, who had a glowing face, pleasing to the eyes, who walked with the gait of an elephant, whose hair was matted, who was gentle and strong who was, endowed with royal traits, who had a blue lotus-like complexion, who was handsome as the god of love, and who resembled Indra.

ನ್ಯಾಯವೃತ್ತಂ ಸುದುರ್ವೃತ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಿಯಮಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಾ.

ದುರ್ಮುಖೀ looking, ಮಹೋದರೀ huge-bellied, ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷೀ woman with deformed eyes, ತಾಮ್ರಮೂರ್ಧಜಾ copper-red hair, ವಿರೂಪಾ ugly, ಭೈರವಸ್ವರಾ of shrill voice, ದಾರುಣಾ ವೃದ್ಧಾ dreadfully old, ವಾಮಭಾಷಿಣೀ with a perverted tongue, ಸುದುರ್ವೃತಾ very wicked, ಅಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಾ ugly to look at, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ the demoness, ಸುಮುಖಮ್ of beautiful face, ವೃತ್ತಮಧ್ಯಮ್ slender waist, ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಮ್ large-eyed, ಸುಕೇಶಮ್ with beautiful hair, ಪ್ರೀತಿರೂಪಮ್ with lovely appearance, ಸುಸ್ವರಮ್ sweet voice, ತರುಣಮ್ young , ದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್ favourable, ನ್ಯಾಯವೃತ್ತಮ್ who was just, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ lovely, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಶರೀರಜಸಮಾವಿಷ್ಟಾ overcome by lust, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Rama's face was lovely, Surpanakha's was hideous. Rama had a slender waist, she had a huge belly. His eyes were large, hers were deformed. His hair was black and beautiful, hers was copper-coloured. He was lovely in appearance, she was ugly. His voice was sweet, hers was shrill. He was young, she was dreadfully old. He was positive, she was perverted. Rama was well-behaved, she was wicked. Rama was just and loving while she was overcome by lust. (This) demoness said to Rama :
ಜಟೀ ತಾಪಸರೂಪೇಣ ಸಭಾರ್ಯಶ್ಶರಚಾಪಧೃತ್.

ಆಗತಸ್ತ್ವಮಿಮಂ ದೇಶಂ ಕಥಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಸೇವಿತಮ್৷৷3.17.13৷৷

ಕಿಮಾಗಮನಕೃತ್ಯಂ ತೇ ತತ್ತ್ವಮಾಖ್ಯಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಜಟೀ having matted hair, ಸಭಾರ್ಯಃ with your wife, ಶರಚಾಪಧೃತ್ holding bow and arrows, ತಾಪಸರೂಪೇಣ in the form of an ascetic, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಸೇವಿತಮ್ haunted by demons, ಇಮಂ this, ದೇಶಮ್ place, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಆಗತಃ have you come, ತೇ your, ಆಗಮನಕೃತ್ಯಮ್ reason for coming, ಕಿಮ್ what, ತತ್ವಮ್ truth, ಅಖ್ಯಾತುಮ್ to tell, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ should.

O Rama! you are wearing matted hair like an ascetic, but living with your wife and holding bow and arrows. What brings you to this place haunted by demons ? You should tell me the truth ?
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ರಾಕ್ಷಸ್ಯಾ ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖ್ಯಾ ಪರನ್ತಪಃ৷৷3.17.14৷৷

ಋಜುಬುದ್ಧಿತಯಾ ಸರ್ವಮಾಖ್ಯಾತುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ.


ರಾಕ್ಷಸ್ಯಾ by the demoness, ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖ್ಯಾ by Surpanakha, ಏವಮ್ in that way, ಉಕ್ತಃ asked, ಪರನ್ತಪಃ a scorcher of foes, ಋಜುಬುದ್ಧಿತಯಾ due to simple-mindedness, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything, ಆಖ್ಯಾತುಮ್ to tell, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ started.

Thus asked by the demoness Surpanakha, Rama, scorcher of foes began telling her everything due to his simplemindedness.
ಅನೃತಂ ನ ಹಿ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಕದಾಚಿದಪಿ ಸಮ್ಮತಮ್৷৷3.17.15৷৷

ವಿಶೇಷೇಣಾಶ್ರಮಸ್ಥಸ್ಯ ಸಮೀಪೇ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ.


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ to Rama, ಅನೃತಮ್ untruth, ಕದಾಚಿದಪಿ ever, ನ ಸಮ್ಮತಂ ಹಿ not acceptable, ಆಶ್ರಮಸ್ಥಸ್ಯ while at the hermitage, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಜನಸ್ಯ of women, ಸಮೀಪೇ ಚ in the presence of, ವಿಶೇಷೇಣ especially.

To Rama untruth is never acceptable at the hermitage and especially in the presence of a woman.
ಆಸೀದ್ಧಶರಥೋ ನಾಮ ರಾಜಾ ತ್ರಿದಶವಿಕ್ರಮಃ৷৷3.17.16৷৷

ತಸ್ಯಾಹಮಗ್ರಜಃ ಪುತ್ರೋ ರಾಮೋ ನಾಮ ಜನೈಶ್ಶ್ರುತಃ.


ತ್ರಿದಶವಿಕ್ರಮಃ mighty like the gods, ದಶರಥೋ ನಾಮ Dasaratha by name, ರಾಜಾ king, ಆಸೀತ್ was, ಅಹಮ್ I am, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಅಗ್ರಜಃ eldest, ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ರಾಮೋ Rama, ನಾಮ by name, ಜನೈಃ by people, ಶ್ರುತಃ heard.

(Rama replied) There was a king named Dasaratha who was mighty like the gods. I am his eldest son known among the people as Rama.
ಭ್ರಾತಾಯಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ ಯವೀಯಾನ್ಮಾಮನುವ್ರತಃ৷৷3.17.17৷৷

ಇಯಂ ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಚ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಮಮ ಸೀತೇತಿ ವಿಶ್ರುತಾ.


ಅಯಮ್ he is, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ Lakshmana by name, ಯವೀಯಾನ್ younger one, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಮಾಮ್ to
me, ಅನುವ್ರತಃ always following me, ವೈದೇಹೀ daughter of king of Videha, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಮಮ my, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife, ಸೀತೇತಿ as Sita, ವಿಶ್ರುತಾ well-known.

Here is Lakshmana , my younger brother, who always follows me . And this is the daughter of the king of Videha and my wife, well-known as Sita.
ನಿಯೋಗಾತ್ತು ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪಿತುರ್ಮಾತುಶ್ಚ ಯನ್ತ್ರಿತಃ৷৷3.17.18৷৷

ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥಂ ಧರ್ಮಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷೀ ಚ ವನಂ ವಸ್ತುಮಿಹಾಗತಃ.


ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king's, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಮಾತುಶ್ಚ and mother's, ನಿಯೋಗಾತ್ by the order, ಯನ್ತ್ರಿತಃ impelled, ಧರ್ಮಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷೀ ಚ one desirous of establishing righteousness, ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥಮ್ for the sake of duty, ಇಹ here, ವಸ್ತುಮ್ to reside, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಆಗತಃ I have come.

I have come here, commanded by the king, my father and mother.Intending to obey the orders of my father, and impelled by duty to establish righteousness I have come to reside here.
ತ್ವಾಂ ತು ವೇದಿತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಕಥ್ಯತಾಂ ಕ್ವಾಸಿ ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾ৷৷3.17.19৷৷

ನ ಹಿ ತಾವನ್ಮನೋಜ್ಞಾಙ್ಗೀ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಸಿ ಮೇ.


ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ವೇದಿತುಮ್ to know, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I wish, ಕಥ್ಯತಾಮ್ you may speak, ಕ್ವ who, ಅಸಿ you are, ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾ whose, ಮನೋಜ್ಞಾಙ್ಗೀ a woman of beautiful limbs, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ demoness, ಮೇ to me, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾಸಿ seem not.

I wish to know who you are. Tell me who your kins are. With lovely limbs you do not appear to be a demoness.
ಇಹ ವಾ ಕಿ ನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ತ್ವಮಾಗತಾ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ತತ್ವತಃ৷৷3.17.20৷৷

ಸಾಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಮದನಾರ್ದಿತಾ.


ಇಹ here, ಕಿನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ for what purpose, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಆಗತಾ ವಾ you have come, ತತ್ವತಃ truly, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell, ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ hearing, ಮದನಾರ್ದಿತಾ overtaken by passion, ಸಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ that
demoness, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said,

Tell me truly what you have come here for. Having heard the words of Rama and overtaken by passion, the demoness said:
ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಂ ರಾಮ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ತತ್ತ್ವಾರ್ಥಂ ವಚನಂ ಮಮ. 3.17.21৷৷

ಅಹಂ ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾ ನಾಮ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಕಾಮರೂಪಿಣೀ.

ಅರಣ್ಯಂ ವಿಚರಾಮೀದಮೇಕಾ ಸರ್ವಭಯಙ್ಕರಾ৷৷3.17.22৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ myself, ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾ ನಾಮ is Surpanakha by name, ಕಾಮರೂಪಿಣೀ assume the form I desire, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ a demoness, ಏಕಾ alone, ಸರ್ವಭಯಙ್ಕರಾ can terrorise all creatures, ಇದಮ್ this, ಅರಣ್ಯಮ್ forest, ವಿಚರಾಮಿ I move about.

My name is Surpanakha. I am a demoness who can assume any form at will, I move in this forest alone, unleashing a reign of terror.
ರಾವಣೋ ನಾಮ ಮೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಬಲೀಯಾನ್ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರಃ.

ವೀರೋ ವಿಶ್ರವಸಃ ಪುತ್ರೋ ಯದಿ ತೇ ಶ್ರೋತ್ರಮಾಗತಃ৷৷3.17.23৷৷


ಬಲೀಯಾನ್ strongman, ವೀರಃ a hero, ವಿಶ್ರವಸ: Visrava's, ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ರಾವಣೋ ನಾಮ by name Ravana, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರಃ lord for all demons, ಮೇ my, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ತೇ to you, ಶ್ರೋತ್ರಮ್ is heard,ಯದಿ I suppose.

My brother is Ravana, son of Visrava, and lord of all demons. You have heard his name I suppose.
ಪ್ರವೃದ್ಧನಿದ್ರಶ್ಚ ಸದಾ ಕುಮ್ಭಕರ್ಣೋ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ವಿಭೀಷಣಸ್ತು ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ನ ತು ರಾಕ್ಷಸಚೇಷ್ಟಿತಃ৷৷3.17.24৷৷

ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತವೀರ್ಯೌ ಚ ರಣೇ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ಖರದೂಷಣೌ.


ಸದಾ always, ಪ್ರವೃದ್ಧನಿದ್ರಃ in deep sleep, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ very strong, ಕುಮ್ಭಕರ್ಣಃ ಚ Kumbhakarna, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ
a righteous one, ವಿಭೀಷಣಸ್ತು Vibhisana also, ತು but, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಚೇಷ್ಟಿತಃ nature of the demon, ನ not, ರಣೇ in war, ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತವೀರ್ಯೌ both very well-known heroes, ಖರದೂಷಣೌ ಚ Khara and Dusana, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ two brothers.

Kumbhakarna is another brother of mine. He is very strong. He is always in deep sleep. Vibhisna another brother. He is righteous free from any demoniac trait. My other two brothers are Khara and Dusana who are well-known heroes of war.

ಸಮುಪೇತಾಸ್ಮಿ ಭಾವೇನ ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಮ್.


ರಾಮ O Rama, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಾನ್ them, ಸಮತಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾ transgressing all of them, ಪೂರ್ವದರ್ಶನಾತ್ as soon as I saw, ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಮ್ finest of men, ತ್ವಾ you, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ as husband, ಭಾವೇನ with that feeling, ಸಮುಪೇತಾ approached, ಅಸ್ಮಿ I am.

Setting them aside, I came here, as soon as I saw you. You are the finest among men and I am here wishing you to be my husband.

ಚಿರಾಯ ಭವ ಮೇ ಭರ್ತಾ ಸೀತಯಾ ಕಿಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ.


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪ್ರಭಾವಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾ influential, ಸ್ವಚ್ಛನ್ದಬಲಗಾಮಿನೀ I have the capacity for moving wherever I want ಚಿರಾಯ for long, ಮೇ my, ಭರ್ತಾ husband, ಭವ you, ಸೀತಯಾ with Sita, ಕಿಂನ್ಕರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ what will you do?

She is ugly, deformed, unsuitable for you. I am alone fit for you. Look upon me as your wife.
ಇಮಾಂ ವಿರೂಪಾಮಸತೀಂ ಕರಾಲಾಂ ನಿರ್ಣತೋದರೀಮ್৷৷3.17.28৷৷

ಅನೇನ ತೇ ಸಹ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಭಕ್ಷಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಮಾನುಷೀಮ್.


ವಿರೂಪಾಮ್ deformed, ಅಸತೀಮ್ unchaste, ಕರಾಲಾಮ್ frightful, ನಿರ್ಣತೋದರೀಮ್ flat bellied woman, ಇಮಾಂ ಮಾನುಷೀಮ್ to this lady, ತೇ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾಸಹ along with your brother, ಭಕ್ಷಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will eat up.

ಪಶ್ಯನ್ಸಹ ಮಯಾ ಕಾನ್ತ ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ವಿಚರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ.


ಕಾನ್ತ O darling, ತತಃ thereafter, ಪರ್ವತಶೃಙ್ಗಾಣಿ tops of mountains, ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ many kinds, ವನಾನಿ ಚ forests also, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ while seeing, ಮಯಾ ಸಹ with me, ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ Dandaka forest, ವಿಚರಿಷ್ಯಸಿ will wander.

O darling, thereafter you can keep wandering with me in this Dandaka forest, enjoying the beauty of the mountain tops and forests.
ಇತ್ಯೇವಮುಕ್ತಃ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ಯ ಮದಿರೇಕ್ಷಣಾಮ್৷৷3.17.30৷৷

ಇದಂ ವಚನಮಾರೇಭೇ ವಕ್ತುಂ ವಾಕ್ಯವಿಶಾರದಃ.
