[Rama kills all the fourteen demons -- Surpanakha describes the killing to Khara.]

tataśśūrpaṇakhā ghōrā rāghavāśramamāgatā.

rākṣasānācacakṣē tau bhrātarau saha sītayā৷৷3.20.1৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, ghōrā frightful, śūrpaṇakhā Surpanakha, rāghavāśramam Rama's hermitage, āgatā came, rākṣasān to the demons, saha sītayā with Sita, bhrātarau brothers, tau both, ācacakṣē spoke about.

The frightful Surpanakha came to the hermitage of Rama and showed both the brothers and Sita to the demons.
tē rāmaṅ parṇaśālāyāmupaviṣṭaṅ mahābalam.

dadṛśussītayā sārdhaṅ vaidēhyā lakṣmaṇēna ca.3.20.2৷৷


tē they, vaidēhyāḥ with Vaidehi, sārdham together with, lakṣmaṇēna ca and with Lakshmana, parṇaśālāyām in the leaf-thatched cottage, upaviṣṭam seated, mahābalam a man of great strength, rāmam Rama, dadṛśuḥ saw.

They saw mighty Rama together with Vaidehi and Lakshmana sitting in the leaf-thatched cottage.
tāndṛṣṭvā rāghavaśśrīmānāgatāṅstāṅ ca rākṣasīm.

abravīdbhrātaraṅ rāmō lakṣmaṇaṅ dīptatējasam৷৷3.20.3৷৷


śrīmān handsome, rāghavaḥ scion of the Raghu dynasty, rāmaḥ Rama, āgatān those who arrived, tān them, tāṅ rākṣasīm to the demoness, dṛṣṭvā seeing, dīptatējasam blazing like fire, bhrātaram brother, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, abravīt said.

Seeing the demons along with Surpanakha arrive, said the handsome Rama, scion of the Raghu dynasty to his brother Lakshmana, who was blazing like fire :
muhūrtaṅ bhava saumitrē sītāyāḥ pratyanantaraḥ.

imānasyā vadhiṣyāmi padavīmāgatāniha৷৷3.20.4৷৷


saumitrē O Lakshmana, muhūrtam for a while, sītāyāḥ to Sita, pratyanantaraḥ stand by, bhava you may be, asyāḥ her, padavīm in the way, iha here, āgatān those who came in, imān these to, vadhiṣyāmi will kill.

O Lakshmana ! stand by Sita for a while. I shall kill these demons who have come here.
vākyamētattataśśrutvā rāmasya viditātmanaḥ.

tathēti lakṣmaṇō vākyaṅ rāmasya pratyapūjayat৷৷3.20.5৷৷


tataḥ then, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, viditātmanaḥ knower of the self, rāmasya Rama's, ētat this, vākyam statement, śrutvā after hearing, tathēti agreeing to, rāmasya Rama's, vākyam statement, pratyapūjayat in turn honoured.

Lakshmana heard him and in turn honoured the word of Rama, knower of the self.
rāghavō.pi mahaccāpaṅ cāmīkaravibhūṣitam.

cakāra sajyaṅ dharmātmā tāni rakṣāṅsi cābravīt৷৷3.20.6৷৷


dharmātmā righteous man, rāghavō.pi Rama too, cāmīkaravibhūṣitam decked with gold, mahat great, cāpam bow, sajyam stringed, cakāra made, tāni those, rakṣāṅsi to the demons, abravīt ca said.

Righteous Rama too, lifted up his great bow decked with gold and fastened the string and then said to the demons:
putrau daśarathasyāvāṅ bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

praviṣṭau sītayā sārdhaṅ duścaraṅ daṇḍakāvanam৷৷3.20.7৷৷


āvām we both are, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, putrau two sons, bhrātarau two brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, sītayā sārdham along with Sita, duścaram inaccessible, daṇḍakāvanam Dandaka forest, praviṣṭhau both have entered.

We, Rama and Lakshmana, sons of Dasaratha, are brothers, who have entered the inaccessible Dandaka forest along with Sita.
phalamūlāśanau dāntau tāpasau dharmacāriṇau.

vasantau daṇḍakāraṇyē kimarthamupahiṅsatha৷৷3.20.8৷৷


phalamūlāśinau both survive on fruits and roots etc, dāntau both are self-restrained, dharmacāriṇau both follow the righteous path, daṇḍakāraṇyē in Dandaka forest, vasantau living, tāpasau ascetics, kimartham why, upahiṅsatha torment.

Feeding on fruits and roots and following the righteous path, we are living in Dandaka forest like ascetics. Why are you torturing us?
yuṣmānpāpātmakānhantuṅ viprakārānmahāhavē.

ṛṣīṇāṅ tu niyōgēna prāptō.haṅ saśarāyudhaḥ৷৷3.20.9৷৷


aham I, pāpātmakān sinners, viprakārān offenders, yuṣmān you, āhavē in war, hantum to kill, saśarāyudhaḥ equipped with bows, arrows and weapons, ṛṣīṇām of ascetics, niyōgēna by their order, prāptaḥ came.

I came here equipped with bows, arrows and weapons, asked by ascetics to kill in the battle sinners like you who are offending them.
tiṣṭhataivātra santuṣṭā nōpāvartitumarhatha.

yadi prāṇairihārthō vā nivartadhvaṅ niśācarāḥ৷৷3.20.10৷৷


santuṣṭāḥ satisfied, niśācarāḥ demons, atraiva here only, tiṣṭhataḥ you may stay, upāvartitum to return, na arhatha you should not, yadi vā or else, prāṇaiḥ with life, arthaḥ purpose, nivartadhvam you may return.

If you care for your life, you may return, or else, if you please you may remain (die) here, O demons.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā rākṣasāstē caturdaśa.

ūcurvācaṅ susaṅkruddhā brahmaghnāśśūlapāṇayaḥ৷৷3.20.11৷৷


tasya his, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā on hearing, brahmaghnāḥ destroyers of brahmins, śūlapāṇayaḥ spears in hand, tē those, caturdaśa rākṣasāḥ fourteen demons, susaṅkruddhāḥ very angry, vācam words, ūcuḥ spoke.

At these words, the destroyers of brahmins, the fourteen demons were inflamed. They lifted their spears and spoke:
krōdhamutpādya nō bhartuḥ kharasya sumahātmanaḥ.

tvamēva hāsyasē prāṇānadyāsmābhirhatō yudhi৷৷3.20.12৷৷


naḥ our, bhartuḥ lord's, sumahātmanaḥ of great, kharasya Khara's, krōdham wrath, utpādya causing, adya now, asmābhiḥ by us, yudhi in the fight, hataḥ killed, tvamēva you alone, prāṇān life, hāsyasē will give up.

You have incited the wrath of Khara, our great master for which you will now pay with your life in the fight.
kā hi tē śaktirēkasya bahūnāṅ raṇamūrdhanī.

asmākamagrataḥ sthātuṅ kiṅ punaryōddumāhavē৷৷3.20.13৷৷


bahūnām by many, asmākam of us, agrataḥ in front of, raṇamūrdhani at the head of the battle, sthātum to stand, ēkasya of one, tē to you, kā śaktiḥ where is the power, āhavē in war, yōddhum to fight, kiṅ punaḥ why again.

How can you face us alone? We outnumber you? Leave alone fighting, you cannot even stand in front of us.
ēhi bāhuprayuktairnaḥ parighaiśśūlapaṭṭisaiḥ.

prāṇāṅstyakṣasi vīryaṅ ca dhanuśca karapīḍitam৷৷3.20.14৷৷


ēhi come on, naḥ us, bāhuprayuktaiḥ by those dicharged by our arms, parighaiḥ by daggers, śūlapaṭṭiśai spears with sharp, prāṇān your life, vīryaṅ ca prowess, karapīḍitam held by hand, dhanuśca the bow aslo, tyakṣasi will shun.

Come on! with daggers and sharp-edged spears hurled, you will give up your life,your prowess as well as the bow held in your hand.
ityēvamuktvā saṅkṛddhā rākṣasāstē caturdaśa.

cikṣipustāni śūlāni rāghavaṅ prati durjayam৷৷3.20.15৷৷


saṅkṛddhāḥ mighty angry, tē those , rākṣasāḥ demons, ityēvam thus, uktvā after saying, tāni śūlāni those spears, durjayam invincible, rāghavaṅ prati on Rama, cikṣipuḥ hurled.

Saying these words, the fourteen infuriated demons hurled their spears at invincible Rama.
tāni śūlāni kākutsthassamastāni caturdaśa.

tāvadbhirēva cicchēda śaraiḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ৷৷3.20.16৷৷


kākutstha Rama, caturdaśa fourteen, tāni śūlāni their spears, samastāni all of them, tāvadbhi: by equal number, ēva only, kāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ decorated with gold, śaraiḥ with arrows, cicchēda cut to pieces.

All the fourteen spears hurled turned into splinters by the same number of golden arrows released by Rama.
tataḥ paścānmahātējā nārācānsūryasannibhān.

jagrāha paramakruddhaścaturdaśa śilāśitān৷৷3.20.17৷৷


tataḥ then, mahātējāḥ effulgent, paramakruddhaḥ enraged, śilāśitān sharpened by stone, sūryasannibhān glowing like the Sun, caturdaśa fourteen, nārācān arrows, jagrāha took.

Then the effulgent Rama, mighty angry, took fourteen arrows sharpened by stones and glowing like the Sun.
gṛhītvā dhanurāyamya lakṣyānuddiśya rākṣasān.

mumōca rāghavō bāṇānvajrāniva śatakratuḥ৷৷3.20.18৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, dhanuḥ bow, gṛhītvā on taking, āyamya after stretching, lakṣyān the target, rākṣasān the demons, uddiśya aiming at, śatakratuḥ like Indra, vajrāniva like thunderbolt, bāṇān arrows, mumōca released.

Rama took the bow, stretched it and aimed at his target, the demons and sent the arrows as Indra would release the thunderbolt.
rukmapuṅkhāśca viśikhā dīptā hēmavibhūṣitāḥ.

tē bhittvā rakṣasāṅ vēgādvakṣāṅsi rudhirāplutāḥ.3.20.19৷৷

viniṣpētustadā bhūmau nyamajjantāśanisvanāḥ.


rukmapuṅkhāḥ feathered with gold, dīptāḥ blazing, hēmavibhūṣitāḥ decorated with gold, tē those, viśikhāḥ arrows, vēgāt speedily, rakṣasām the demons, vakṣāṅsi their chests, bhittvā piercing, rudhirāplutāḥ drenched in blood, tadā then, viniṣpētuḥ fell down, aśanisvanāḥ creating sounds like thunder, bhūmau on earth, nyamajjanta pierced into.

Gold-feathered blazing arrows decorated with gold, released by Rama flew fast and pierced the chests of the demons. Drenched in blood they (the arrows) thundered (out of their chests) and plunged into the earth.
tē bhinnahṛdayā bhūmau chinnamūlā iva drumāḥ৷৷3.20.20৷৷

nipētuśśōṇitārdrāṅgā vikṛtā vigatāsavaḥ.


tē they, bhinnahṛdayāḥ with pierced hearts, śōṇitārdrāṅgāḥ bodies drenched in blood, vikṛtāḥ disfigured, vigatāsavaḥ with their life gone, chinnamūlāḥ cut at the roots, drumāḥ iva like trees, bhūmau on earth, nipētuḥ fell down.

With their hearts split, their bodies drenched in blood, disfigured and lifeless, the demons fell down on earth like trees cut at the roots.
tān dṛṣṭvā patitānbhūmau rākṣasī krōdhamūrchitā৷৷3.20.21৷৷

paritrastā punastatra vyasṛjadbhairavasvanān.


bhūmau on the ground, patitān fell down, tān those, dṛṣṭvā seeing, rākṣasī the demoness, (Surpanakha), krōdhamūrchitā wild with anger, paritrastā frightened, tatra there, punaḥ again, bhairavasvanān frihghtening sound, vyasṛjat released.

Seeing the demons fallen on the ground, the demoness wild with anger and fear roared.
upagamya kharaṅ sā tu kiñcitsaṅśuṣkaśōṇitā৷৷3.20.22৷৷

papāta punarēvārtā saniryāsēva sallakī.


kiñcit slightly, saṅśuṣkaśōṇitā blood dried up, saniryāsā juice exuded, sallakī iva like a sallaki tree, sā she, tu but, ārtā afflicted, kharam to Khara, upagamya coming, punarēva again, papāta fell down.

Her blood slightly dried up, she came back afflicted to Khara and fell down like a sallaki tree, its sap oozing.
papāta punarēvārtā saniryāsēva sallakī ৷৷3.20.23 ৷৷

bhrātussamīpē śōkārtā sasarja ninadaṅ muhuḥ৷৷3.20.24৷৷

sasvaraṅ mumucē bāṣpaṅ viṣaṇṇavadanā tadā.


tadā then, śōkārtā afflicted with tears, bhrātuḥ of the brother, samīpē presence, muhuḥ again and again, ninadam sound, sasarja released, viṣaṇṇavadanā with a sad face, sasvaram making loud noise, bāṣpam tears, mumucē shed.

Then desperately screaming and shedding tears with a sad face beside her brother, she roared again and again.
nipātitān dṛśya raṇē tu rākṣasān pradhāvitā śūrpaṇakhā punastataḥ.

vadhaṅ ca tēṣāṅ nikhilēna rakṣasāṅ śaśaṅsa sarvaṅ bhaginī kharasya sā৷৷3.20.25৷৷


śūrpaṇakhā Surpanakha, raṇē in the fight, nipātitān fallen, rākṣasān demons, dṛśya seeing, punaḥ tataḥ then, pradhāvitā she ran, bhaginī sister, rakṣasām of demons, vadham about the death, sarvam all, nikhilēna in detail, kharasya to Khara, śaśaṅsa told.

When Surpanakha saw the demons fall dead on the battleground, she ran to Khara,her brother and told in detail about the death of the demons.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē viṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentieth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
