[Rama kills all the fourteen demons -- Surpanakha describes the killing to Khara.]

తతః thereafter, ఘోరా frightful, శూర్పణఖా Surpanakha, రాఘవాశ్రమమ్ Rama's hermitage, ఆగతా came, రాక్షసాన్ to the demons, సహ సీతయా with Sita, భ్రాతరౌ brothers, తౌ both, ఆచచక్షే spoke about.
The frightful Surpanakha came to the hermitage of Rama and showed both the brothers and Sita to the demons.
తే రామం పర్ణశాలాయాముపవిష్టం మహాబలమ్.
దదృశుస్సీతయా సార్ధం వైదేహ్యా లక్ష్మణేన చ.3.20.2৷৷

తే they, వైదేహ్యాః with Vaidehi, సార్ధమ్ together with, లక్ష్మణేన చ and with Lakshmana, పర్ణశాలాయామ్ in the leaf-thatched cottage, ఉపవిష్టమ్ seated, మహాబలమ్ a man of great strength, రామమ్ Rama, దదృశుః saw.
They saw mighty Rama together with Vaidehi and Lakshmana sitting in the leaf-thatched cottage.
తాన్దృష్ట్వా రాఘవశ్శ్రీమానాగతాంస్తాం చ రాక్షసీమ్.

శ్రీమాన్ handsome, రాఘవః scion of the Raghu dynasty, రామః Rama, ఆగతాన్ those who arrived, తాన్ them, తాం రాక్షసీమ్ to the demoness, దృష్ట్వా seeing, దీప్తతేజసమ్ blazing like fire, భ్రాతరమ్ brother, లక్ష్మణమ్ to Lakshmana, అబ్రవీత్ said.
Seeing the demons along with Surpanakha arrive, said the handsome Rama, scion of the Raghu dynasty to his brother Lakshmana, who was blazing like fire :
ముహూర్తం భవ సౌమిత్రే సీతాయాః ప్రత్యనన్తరః.
ఇమానస్యా వధిష్యామి పదవీమాగతానిహ৷৷3.20.4৷৷

సౌమిత్రే O Lakshmana, ముహూర్తమ్ for a while, సీతాయాః to Sita, ప్రత్యనన్తరః stand by, భవ you may be, అస్యాః her, పదవీమ్ in the way, ఇహ here, ఆగతాన్ those who came in, ఇమాన్ these to, వధిష్యామి will kill.
O Lakshmana ! stand by Sita for a while. I shall kill these demons who have come here.

తతః then, లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, విదితాత్మనః knower of the self, రామస్య Rama's, ఏతత్ this, వాక్యమ్ statement, శ్రుత్వా after hearing, తథేతి agreeing to, రామస్య Rama's, వాక్యమ్ statement, ప్రత్యపూజయత్ in turn honoured.
Lakshmana heard him and in turn honoured the word of Rama, knower of the self.

ధర్మాత్మా righteous man, రాఘవోపి Rama too, చామీకరవిభూషితమ్ decked with gold, మహత్ great, చాపమ్ bow, సజ్యమ్ stringed, చకార made, తాని those, రక్షాంసి to the demons, అబ్రవీత్ చ said.
Righteous Rama too, lifted up his great bow decked with gold and fastened the string and then said to the demons:
పుత్రౌ దశరథస్యావాం భ్రాతరౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ.
ప్రవిష్టౌ సీతయా సార్ధం దుశ్చరం దణ్డకావనమ్৷৷3.20.7৷৷

ఆవామ్ we both are, దశరథస్య Dasaratha's, పుత్రౌ two sons, భ్రాతరౌ two brothers, రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, సీతయా సార్ధమ్ along with Sita, దుశ్చరమ్ inaccessible, దణ్డకావనమ్ Dandaka forest, ప్రవిష్ఠౌ both have entered.
We, Rama and Lakshmana, sons of Dasaratha, are brothers, who have entered the inaccessible Dandaka forest along with Sita.
ఫలమూలాశనౌ దాన్తౌ తాపసౌ ధర్మచారిణౌ.
వసన్తౌ దణ్డకారణ్యే కిమర్థముపహింసథ৷৷3.20.8৷৷

ఫలమూలాశినౌ both survive on fruits and roots etc, దాన్తౌ both are self-restrained, ధర్మచారిణౌ both follow the righteous path, దణ్డకారణ్యే in Dandaka forest, వసన్తౌ living, తాపసౌ ascetics, కిమర్థమ్ why, ఉపహింసథ torment.
Feeding on fruits and roots and following the righteous path, we are living in Dandaka forest like ascetics. Why are you torturing us?
యుష్మాన్పాపాత్మకాన్హన్తుం విప్రకారాన్మహాహవే.
ఋషీణాం తు నియోగేన ప్రాప్తోహం సశరాయుధః৷৷3.20.9৷৷

అహమ్ I, పాపాత్మకాన్ sinners, విప్రకారాన్ offenders, యుష్మాన్ you, ఆహవే in war, హన్తుమ్ to kill, సశరాయుధః equipped with bows, arrows and weapons, ఋషీణామ్ of ascetics, నియోగేన by their order, ప్రాప్తః came.
I came here equipped with bows, arrows and weapons, asked by ascetics to kill in the battle sinners like you who are offending them.
తిష్ఠతైవాత్ర సన్తుష్టా నోపావర్తితుమర్హథ.
యది ప్రాణైరిహార్థో వా నివర్తధ్వం నిశాచరాః৷৷3.20.10৷৷
యది ప్రాణైరిహార్థో వా నివర్తధ్వం నిశాచరాః৷৷3.20.10৷৷
సన్తుష్టాః satisfied, నిశాచరాః demons, అత్రైవ here only, తిష్ఠతః you may stay, ఉపావర్తితుమ్ to return, న అర్హథ you should not, యది వా or else, ప్రాణైః with life, అర్థః purpose, నివర్తధ్వమ్ you may return.
If you care for your life, you may return, or else, if you please you may remain (die) here, O demons.
తస్య తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా రాక్షసాస్తే చతుర్దశ.
ఊచుర్వాచం సుసంక్రుద్ధా బ్రహ్మఘ్నాశ్శూలపాణయః৷৷3.20.11৷৷

తస్య his, తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, బ్రహ్మఘ్నాః destroyers of brahmins, శూలపాణయః spears in hand, తే those, చతుర్దశ రాక్షసాః fourteen demons, సుసఙ్క్రుద్ధాః very angry, వాచమ్ words, ఊచుః spoke.
At these words, the destroyers of brahmins, the fourteen demons were inflamed. They lifted their spears and spoke:
క్రోధముత్పాద్య నో భర్తుః ఖరస్య సుమహాత్మనః.
త్వమేవ హాస్యసే ప్రాణానద్యాస్మాభిర్హతో యుధి৷৷3.20.12৷৷

నః our, భర్తుః lord's, సుమహాత్మనః of great, ఖరస్య Khara's, క్రోధమ్ wrath, ఉత్పాద్య causing, అద్య now, అస్మాభిః by us, యుధి in the fight, హతః killed, త్వమేవ you alone, ప్రాణాన్ life, హాస్యసే will give up.
You have incited the wrath of Khara, our great master for which you will now pay with your life in the fight.
కా హి తే శక్తిరేకస్య బహూనాం రణమూర్ధనీ.
అస్మాకమగ్రతః స్థాతుం కిం పునర్యోద్దుమాహవే৷৷3.20.13৷৷

బహూనామ్ by many, అస్మాకమ్ of us, అగ్రతః in front of, రణమూర్ధని at the head of the battle, స్థాతుమ్ to stand, ఏకస్య of one, తే to you, కా శక్తిః where is the power, ఆహవే in war, యోద్ధుమ్ to fight, కిం పునః why again.
How can you face us alone? We outnumber you? Leave alone fighting, you cannot even stand in front of us.
ఏహి బాహుప్రయుక్తైర్నః పరిఘైశ్శూలపట్టిసైః.
ప్రాణాంస్త్యక్షసి వీర్యం చ ధనుశ్చ కరపీడితమ్৷৷3.20.14৷৷

ఏహి come on, నః us, బాహుప్రయుక్తైః by those dicharged by our arms, పరిఘైః by daggers, శూలపట్టిశై spears with sharp, ప్రాణాన్ your life, వీర్యం చ prowess, కరపీడితమ్ held by hand, ధనుశ్చ the bow aslo, త్యక్షసి will shun.
Come on! with daggers and sharp-edged spears hurled, you will give up your life,your prowess as well as the bow held in your hand.
ఇత్యేవముక్త్వా సఙ్కృద్ధా రాక్షసాస్తే చతుర్దశ.

సఙ్కృద్ధాః mighty angry, తే those , రాక్షసాః demons, ఇత్యేవమ్ thus, ఉక్త్వా after saying, తాని శూలాని those spears, దుర్జయమ్ invincible, రాఘవం ప్రతి on Rama, చిక్షిపుః hurled.
Saying these words, the fourteen infuriated demons hurled their spears at invincible Rama.
తాని శూలాని కాకుత్స్థస్సమస్తాని చతుర్దశ.
తావద్భిరేవ చిచ్ఛేద శరైః కాఞ్చనభూషణైః৷৷3.20.16৷৷

కాకుత్స్థ Rama, చతుర్దశ fourteen, తాని శూలాని their spears, సమస్తాని all of them, తావద్భి: by equal number, ఏవ only, కాఞ్చనభూషణైః decorated with gold, శరైః with arrows, చిచ్ఛేద cut to pieces.
All the fourteen spears hurled turned into splinters by the same number of golden arrows released by Rama.
తతః పశ్చాన్మహాతేజా నారాచాన్సూర్యసన్నిభాన్.
జగ్రాహ పరమక్రుద్ధశ్చతుర్దశ శిలాశితాన్৷৷3.20.17৷৷

తతః then, మహాతేజాః effulgent, పరమక్రుద్ధః enraged, శిలాశితాన్ sharpened by stone, సూర్యసన్నిభాన్ glowing like the Sun, చతుర్దశ fourteen, నారాచాన్ arrows, జగ్రాహ took.
Then the effulgent Rama, mighty angry, took fourteen arrows sharpened by stones and glowing like the Sun.
గృహీత్వా ధనురాయమ్య లక్ష్యానుద్దిశ్య రాక్షసాన్.
ముమోచ రాఘవో బాణాన్వజ్రానివ శతక్రతుః৷৷3.20.18৷৷

రాఘవః Rama, ధనుః bow, గృహీత్వా on taking, ఆయమ్య after stretching, లక్ష్యాన్ the target, రాక్షసాన్ the demons, ఉద్దిశ్య aiming at, శతక్రతుః like Indra, వజ్రానివ like thunderbolt, బాణాన్ arrows, ముమోచ released.
Rama took the bow, stretched it and aimed at his target, the demons and sent the arrows as Indra would release the thunderbolt.
రుక్మపుఙ్ఖాశ్చ విశిఖా దీప్తా హేమవిభూషితాః.
తే భిత్త్వా రక్షసాం వేగాద్వక్షాంసి రుధిరాప్లుతాః.3.20.19৷৷
వినిష్పేతుస్తదా భూమౌ న్యమజ్జన్తాశనిస్వనాః.

రుక్మపుఙ్ఖాః feathered with gold, దీప్తాః blazing, హేమవిభూషితాః decorated with gold, తే those, విశిఖాః arrows, వేగాత్ speedily, రక్షసామ్ the demons, వక్షాంసి their chests, భిత్త్వా piercing, రుధిరాప్లుతాః drenched in blood, తదా then, వినిష్పేతుః fell down, అశనిస్వనాః creating sounds like thunder, భూమౌ on earth, న్యమజ్జన్త pierced into.
Gold-feathered blazing arrows decorated with gold, released by Rama flew fast and pierced the chests of the demons. Drenched in blood they (the arrows) thundered (out of their chests) and plunged into the earth.
తే భిన్నహృదయా భూమౌ ఛిన్నమూలా ఇవ ద్రుమాః৷৷3.20.20৷৷
నిపేతుశ్శోణితార్ద్రాఙ్గా వికృతా విగతాసవః.

తే they, భిన్నహృదయాః with pierced hearts, శోణితార్ద్రాఙ్గాః bodies drenched in blood, వికృతాః disfigured, విగతాసవః with their life gone, ఛిన్నమూలాః cut at the roots, ద్రుమాః ఇవ like trees, భూమౌ on earth, నిపేతుః fell down.
With their hearts split, their bodies drenched in blood, disfigured and lifeless, the demons fell down on earth like trees cut at the roots.
తాన్ దృష్ట్వా పతితాన్భూమౌ రాక్షసీ క్రోధమూర్ఛితా৷৷3.20.21৷৷
పరిత్రస్తా పునస్తత్ర వ్యసృజద్భైరవస్వనాన్.

భూమౌ on the ground, పతితాన్ fell down, తాన్ those, దృష్ట్వా seeing, రాక్షసీ the demoness, (Surpanakha), క్రోధమూర్ఛితా wild with anger, పరిత్రస్తా frightened, తత్ర there, పునః again, భైరవస్వనాన్ frihghtening sound, వ్యసృజత్ released.
Seeing the demons fallen on the ground, the demoness wild with anger and fear roared.
ఉపగమ్య ఖరం సా తు కిఞ్చిత్సంశుష్కశోణితా৷৷3.20.22৷৷
పపాత పునరేవార్తా సనిర్యాసేవ సల్లకీ.

కిఞ్చిత్ slightly, సంశుష్కశోణితా blood dried up, సనిర్యాసా juice exuded, సల్లకీ ఇవ like a sallaki tree, సా she, తు but, ఆర్తా afflicted, ఖరమ్ to Khara, ఉపగమ్య coming, పునరేవ again, పపాత fell down.
Her blood slightly dried up, she came back afflicted to Khara and fell down like a sallaki tree, its sap oozing.

తదా then, శోకార్తా afflicted with tears, భ్రాతుః of the brother, సమీపే presence, ముహుః again and again, నినదమ్ sound, ససర్జ released, విషణ్ణవదనా with a sad face, సస్వరమ్ making loud noise, బాష్పమ్ tears, ముముచే shed.
Then desperately screaming and shedding tears with a sad face beside her brother, she roared again and again.
నిపాతితాన్ దృశ్య రణే తు రాక్షసాన్ ప్రధావితా శూర్పణఖా పునస్తతః.
వధం చ తేషాం నిఖిలేన రక్షసాం శశంస సర్వం భగినీ ఖరస్య సా৷৷3.20.25৷৷

శూర్పణఖా Surpanakha, రణే in the fight, నిపాతితాన్ fallen, రాక్షసాన్ demons, దృశ్య seeing, పునః తతః then, ప్రధావితా she ran, భగినీ sister, రక్షసామ్ of demons, వధమ్ about the death, సర్వమ్ all, నిఖిలేన in detail, ఖరస్య to Khara, శశంస told.
When Surpanakha saw the demons fall dead on the battleground, she ran to Khara,her brother and told in detail about the death of the demons.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే వింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the twentieth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
