ಗರ್ದಭಾರುಣಃ dark like the colour of an ass, ತುಮುಲಃ fierce, ಮಹಾಮೇಘಃ huge cloud, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that army, ಯಾತೇ marched, ತತ್ there, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadful, ಬಲಮ್ army, ಅಶಿವಮ್ inauspicious, ಶೋಣಿತೋದಕಮ್ water red as blood, ಅಭ್ಯವರ್ಷತ್ rained.
As the army marched from there (Janasthana) a huge dark cloud of the colour of an ass rained dreadful inauspicious water, red as blood.

The swift horses yoked to the chariot stumbled casually while galloping on the plane highway sprinkled with flowers.

A dark ring, blood-red in colour appeared on the border of the Sun's orb, dark in the
middle. This phenomenon of the Sun appeared like a ring of moving charcoal covering the Sun.

The clouds looked like shattered mountains pouring down blood-like rain which filled the sky and made it appear frighteningly different.

ಘೋರಮ್ terrible, ಉದ್ಧತಮ್ arose, ರೋಮಹರ್ಷಣಮ್ horripilation, ತಿಮಿರಮ್ darkness, ಬಭೂವ became, ದಿಶೋ ವಾ whether quarters, ವಿದಿಶೋ ವಾಪಿ or the intermediary, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ clearly, ನ ಚಕಾಶಿರೇ did not shine.
A terrific darkness, spread all over, produced frightening horripilation. Even the four quarters and the intermediary zones were not discernible.

ಕಾಲಂ ವಿನಾ before Sunset, ಕ್ಷತಜಾರ್ದ್ರಸವರ್ಣಾಭಾ glow like a fresh wound, ಸನ್ಧ್ಯಾ twilight, ಬಭೌ appeared, ತದಾ then, ಘೋರಮೃಗಾಃ dreadful animals, ಖಗಾಃ birds, ಖರಸ್ಯ of Khara, ಅಭಿಮುಖಾಃ directed towards, ನೇದುಃ produced sounds, ಕಙ್ಕಗೋಮಾಯುಗೃಧ್ರಾಶ್ಚ kanka birds, jackals, and vultures, ಭಯಶಂಸಿನಃ indicating danger, ಚಕ್ರುಶುಃ screeched.
Even before Sunset the twilight looked like a fresh wound. Then wild animals, birds, kankas, jackals and vultures facing towards Khara screeched, indicating danger.

ನೇದುರ್ಬಲಸ್ಯಾಭಿಮುಖಂ ಜ್ವಾಲೋದ್ಗಾರಿಭಿರಾನನೈಃ.

ಯುದ್ಧೇ in war, ನಿತ್ಯಾಶುಭಕರಾಃ always ominous, ಘೋರನಿದರ್ಶನಾಃ dreadful premonitions, ಶಿವಾಃ jackals, ಜ್ವಾಲೋದ್ಗಾರಿಭಿಃ as if emitting fire, ಆನನೈಃ with their faces, ಬಲಸ್ಯ of the army, ಅಭಿಮುಖಮ್ facing towards, ನೇದುಃ produced sounds.
Bad omens that always bring inauspiciousness were a dreadful evidence of what is going to happen. Jackals howled, facing Khara's army with their mouths emitting fire.

ಭಾಸ್ಕರಾನ್ತಿಕೇ close to the Sun, ಪರಿಘಾಭಾಸಃ appearing like an iron beam, ಕಬನ್ಧ: Ketu, ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ seen, ಮಹಾಗ್ರಹಃ a great planet, ಸ್ವರ್ಭಾನುಃ Rahu, ಅಪರ್ವಣಿ other than the new Moon, ಸೂರ್ಯಮ್ Sun, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ eclipsed, ಮಾರುತಃ wind, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ swiftly, ಪ್ರವಾತಿ blew, ದಿವಾಕರಃ Sun, ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಭಃ without lustre, ಅಭೂತ್ appeared.
The planet Ketu appeared like an iron beam near the Sun. Although it was not the fullmoon or newmoon day, Rahu eclipsed the Sun. Wind blew hard and the Sun was lustreless.
ಉತ್ಪೇತುಶ್ಚ ವಿನಾ ರಾತ್ರಿಂ ತಾರಾಃ ಖದ್ಯೋತಸಪ್ರಭಾಃ.

ಖದ್ಯೋತಸಮ್ಪ್ರಭಾಃ glittering like fire-flies, ತಾರಾಃ stars, ವಿನಾ without, ರಾತ್ರಿಮ್ night, ಉತ್ಪೇತುಃ rose, ಸಂಲೀನಮೀನವಿಹಗಾಃ fishes and birds disappear, ನಲಿನ್ಯಃ lotus-ponds, ಶುಷ್ಕಪಙ್ಕಜಾಃ have dried up lotuses, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ in that, ಕ್ಷಣೇ moment, ದ್ರುಮಾಃ trees, ಪುಷ್ಪಫಲೈಃ flowers and fruits, ವಿನಾ without, ಬಭೂವುಶ್ಚ became.
The stars rose in the sky and glittered like fire-flies even before night arrived. The fishes and the aquatic birds in the lotus-ponds hid themselves under water. Lotuses dried up in tanks and the trees stood bereft of flowers and fruits.

ವೀಚೀಕೂಚೀತಿ ವಾಶ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯೋ ಬಭೂವುಸ್ತತ್ರ ಶಾರಿಕಾಃ.

ವಿನಾ ವಾತಮ್ without wind, ಜಲಧರಾರುಣಃ like a brownish cloud, ರೇಣುಃ dust, ಉದ್ಧೂತಃ rose up, ತತ್ರ there, ಶಾರಿಕಾಃ sarika bird, ವೀಚೀಕೂಚೀತಿ thoughtlessly, ವಾಶ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಃ singing, ಬಭೂವುಃ been.
Although there was no wind, dust rose like a brown cloud and the sarika birds sang (vichi kuchi) thoughtlessly.
ಉಲ್ಕಾಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಸನಿರ್ಘಾತಾ ನಿಪೇತುರ್ಘೋರದರ್ಶನಾಃ৷৷3.23.15৷৷
ಪ್ರಚಚಾಲ ಮಹೀ ಸರ್ವಾ ಸಶೈಲವನಕಾನನಾ.

ಘೋರದರ್ಶನಾಃ dreadful in appearance, ಸನಿರ್ಘಾತಾಃ thunderstorms, ಉಲ್ಕಾಶ್ಚಾಪಿ meteors, ನಿಪೇತುಃ dropped down, ಸಶೈಲವನಕಾನನಾ mountains, groves and forests, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಮಹೀ earth, ಪ್ರಚಚಾಲ trembled.
Dreadful to watch were the thunderstorms and the meteors that dropped down from the sky. The earth trembled all over with mountains, groves and forests.
ಖರಸ್ಯ ಚ ರಥಸ್ಥಸ್ಯ ನರ್ದಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ৷৷3.23.16৷৷
ಪ್ರಾಕಮ್ಪತ ಭುಜಸ್ಸವ್ಯಸ್ಸ್ವರಶ್ಚಾಸ್ಯಾವಸಜ್ಜತ.

ರಥಸ್ಥಸ್ಯ stationed on the chariot, ನರ್ದಮಾನಸ್ಯ shouting, ಧೀಮತಃ intelligent , ಖರಸ್ಯ of Khara, ಸವ್ಯಃ left, ಭುಜಃ shoulder, ಪ್ರಾಕಮ್ಪತ shook violently, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಸ್ವರಶ್ಚ throat also, ಅವಸಜ್ಜತ throttled.
While the intelligent and courageous Khara was seated on the chariot and shouting,
his left shoulder shook violently and throat throttled.
ಸಾಸ್ರಾ ಸಮ್ಪದ್ಯತೇ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಃ ಪಶ್ಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವತಃ৷৷3.23.17৷৷
ಲಲಾಟೇ ಚ ರುಜಾ ಜಾತಾ ನ ಚ ಮೋಹಾನ್ಯವರ್ತತ.

ಸರ್ವತಃ around, ಪಶ್ಯಮಾನಸ್ಯ while watching, ದೃಷ್ಟಿಃ sight, ಸಾಸ್ರಾ filled with tears, ಸಮ್ಪದ್ಯತೇ became, ಲಲಾಟೇ on the forehead, ರುಜಾ ಚ uneasiness, ಜಾತಾ had developed, ಮೋಹಾತ್ due to delusion, ನ not, ಚ ನ್ಯವರ್ತತ did not retreat.
While watching all this, his eyes brimmed with tears. His forehead ached. Yet he was too deluded to beat a retreat.
ತಾನ್ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಯ ಮಹೋತ್ಪಾತಾನುತ್ಥಿತಾನ್ರೋಮಹರ್ಷಣಾನ್৷৷3.23.18৷৷

Looking at these dreadful, horripilating occurrences Khara laughed and said to the demons:

ನ ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮ್ಯಹಂ ವೀರ್ಯಾದ್ಬಲವಾನ್ದುರ್ಬಲಾನಿವ.
ನ ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮ್ಯಹಂ ವೀರ್ಯಾದ್ಬಲವಾನ್ದುರ್ಬಲಾನಿವ.
ಉತ್ಥಿತಾನ್ produced, ಘೋರದರ್ಶನಾನ್ those terrific to see, ಇಮಾನ್ these, ಮಹೋತ್ಪಾತಾನ್ the events boding calamity, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಅಹಮ್ I, ವೀರ್ಯಾತ್ due to valour, ಬಲವಾನ್ strong, ದುರ್ಬಲಾನಿವ as he deals with the weak, ನ ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಿ I do not take them seriously.
Valiant and strong, I do not take seriously these terrifying omens boding calamity just as a strong man does not care for the weak.

ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಾರಾಃ stars, ಅಪಿ even, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೈಃ with sharp, ಶರೈಃ by arrows, ನಭಸ್ಸ್ಥಲಾತ್ from the sky, ಪಾತಯಾಮಿ I will dislodge, ಸಙ್ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ if angered, ಮೃತ್ಯುಮ್ god of death, ಮರಣಧರ್ಮೇಣ mortal nature, ಯೋಜಯಾಮಿ will cause.
With my sharp arrows I can even bring down the stars from the sky. If angered, I can cause mortality to the god of death.

ಅಹತ್ವಾ ಸಾಯಕೈಸ್ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೈರ್ನೋಪಾವರ್ತಿತುಮುತ್ಸಹೇ.
ಅಹತ್ವಾ ಸಾಯಕೈಸ್ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೈರ್ನೋಪಾವರ್ತಿತುಮುತ್ಸಹೇ.
ಬಲೋತ್ಸಿಕ್ತಮ್ man proud of his strength, ತಂ ರಾಘವಮ್ to that Rama, ಅಸ್ಯ and his, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ and Lakshmana, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೈಃ by sharp, ಸಾಯಕೈಃ with arrows, ಅಹತ್ವಾ without killing, ಉಪಾವರ್ತಿತುಮ್ to return, ನೋತ್ಸಹೇ I am not intending.
I do not wish to return, without killing with my sharp arrows that Rama who is proud of his strength and his brother Lakshmana.

Let my sister be satisfied by drinking the blood of both Rama and Lakshmana on whose account this adversity has come.

I have never faced defeat in wars, and all of you have seen it with your eyes. I am not telling you a lie.

ವಜ್ರಹಸ್ತಂ ರಣೇ ಹನ್ಯಾಂ ಕಿಂ ಪುನಸ್ತೌ ಕುಮಾನುಷೌ.
ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ angered, ಮತ್ತೈರಾವತಯಾಯಿನಮ್ riding an intoxicated Airavata, ವಜ್ರಹಸ್ತಮ್ one who wields thunderbolt, ದೇವರಾಜಮಪಿ even the king of the gods, ರಣೇ in war, ಹನ್ಯಾಮ್ I will kill, ತೌ both of them, ಕುಮಾನುಷೌ human beings, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ should I say again.
When angry, I can kill even (Indra) the wielder of the thunderbolt, rider of the intoxicated Airavata and lord of the gods. What to speak of these two petty humans?

ಮೃತ್ಯುಪಾಶಾವಪಾಶಿತಾ fallen into the trap of death, ಸಾ that, ಮಹಾಚಮೂಃ great army, ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಸ್ಯ of the demon, ಗರ್ಜಿತಮ್ roaring, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on hearing, ಅತುಲಮ್ immeasureable, ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷಮ್ joy, ಲೇಭೇ experienced.
Fallen into the death-trap, the great army of the demon, felt very happy on hearing Khara roaring.

ಋಷಯೋ ದೇವಗನ್ದರ್ವಾಸ್ಸಿದ್ಧಾಶ್ಚ ಸಹಚಾರಣೈಃ.

ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಃ great souls, ಋಷಯಃ sages, ದೇವಗನ್ಧರ್ವಾಃ gods and gandharvas, ಸಿದ್ಧಾಶ್ಚ: siddhas (accomplished spiritually), ಚಾರಣೈಃ ಸಹ including celestial bards, ಯುದ್ಧದರ್ಶನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣಃ desirous of seeing the war, ಸಮೀಯುಃ assembled.
Great souls like sages, gods, gandharvas, and siddhas including celestial bards assembled to see the battle.
ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ಚೋಚುಸ್ಸಹಿತಾಸ್ತೇನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಕರ್ಮಣಃ.
ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ ಗೋಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಭ್ಯೋಸ್ತು ಲೋಕಾನಾಂ ಯೇಭಿಸಙ್ಗತಾಃ৷৷3.23.27৷৷

Holy men assembled and uttered benedictions, saying, 'let there be well-being for the cows and brahmins associated with men of pious deeds in all the (three) worlds.
ಜಯತಾಂ ರಾಘವಸ್ಸಂಖ್ಯೇ ಪೌಲಸ್ತ್ಯಾನ್ ರಜನೀಚರಾನ್৷৷3.23.28৷৷

ಚಕ್ರಹಸ್ತಃ wielder of the wheel (Visnu), ಯುದ್ಧೇ in war, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ಅಸುರಪಙ್ಗವಾನ್ chiefs of demons, ಯಥಾ like, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪೌಲಸ್ತ್ಯಾನ್ all descendants of Paulastya, ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯೇ in war, ರಜನೀಚರಾನ್ night-rangers (demons), ಜಯತಾಮ್ let him win.
'Let Rama conquer the descendants of Paulasthya in the war like Visnu, the wielder of the wheel had defeated great demons'.
ಏತಚ್ಚಾನ್ಯಚ್ಚ ಬಹುಶೋ ಬ್ರುವಾಣಾಃ ಪರಮರ್ಷಯಃ৷৷3.23.29৷৷
ಜಾತಕೌತೂಹಲಾಸ್ತತ್ರ ವಿಮಾನಸ್ಥಾಶ್ಚ ದೇವತಾಃ.
ದದೃಶುರ್ವಾಹಿನೀಂ ತೇಷಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ಗತಾಯುಷಾಮ್৷৷3.23.30৷৷
ಜಾತಕೌತೂಹಲಾಸ್ತತ್ರ ವಿಮಾನಸ್ಥಾಶ್ಚ ದೇವತಾಃ.
ದದೃಶುರ್ವಾಹಿನೀಂ ತೇಷಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ಗತಾಯುಷಾಮ್৷৷3.23.30৷৷
ಏತಚ್ಚಾನ್ಯಚ್ಚ these matters, ಬಹುಶಃ more and more, ಬ್ರುವಾಣಾಃ while talking, ಪರಮರ್ಷಯಃ great ascetics, ತತ್ರ there, ವಿಮಾನಸ್ಥಾಃ occupants of heavenly chariots, ದೇವತಾಶ್ಚ gods too, ಜಾತಕೌತೂಹಲಾಃ with much eagerness, ಗತಾಯುಷಾಮ್ those of reduced life span, ತೇಷಾಮ್ of those, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಮ್ of demons, ವಾಹಿನೀಮ್ army, ದದೃಶುಃ saw.
The great ascetics were talking thus and more. The gods waiting eagerly on heavenly chariots saw the army of the demons whose life span was shortened (who were doomed to death).
ರಥೇನ ತು ಖರೋ ವೇಗಾದುಗ್ರಸೈನ್ಯೋ ವಿನಿಸ್ಸೃತಃ.
ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಂ ಭೂಯೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಶ್ಚ ವಿನಿಸ್ಸೃತಾಃ৷৷3.23.31৷৷

ಉಗ್ರಸೈನ್ಯಃ terrific army, ಖರಃ Khara, ರಥೇನ on the chariot, ವೇಗಾತ್ speedily, ವಿನಿಸ್ಸೃತಃ drove fast, ತಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಮ್ that demon also, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ seeing, ಭೂಯಃ again, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ demons, ವಿನಿಸ್ಸೃತಾಃ marched.
Seeing Khara, their chief on the chariot driving fast, the army of demons too marched forward.

ಶ್ಯೇನಗಾಮೀ moving like a hawk, ಪೃಥುಗ್ರೀವಃ Pruthugreeva (one with a big neck), ಯಜ್ಞಶತ್ರುಃ Yagnasatru (enemy of sacrifices), ವಿಹಙ್ಗಮಃ Vihangama (who knows how to move in the sky), ದುರ್ಜಯಃ Durjaya (an invincible one), ಕರವೀರಾಕ್ಷಃ Karaviraksha (one whose eyes are like the oleander flower), ಪರುಷಃ Parusha (harsh), ಕಾಲಕಾರ್ಮುಕಃ Kalakarmuka (bow of death), ಮೇಘಮಾಲೀ Meghamali (clouds in a row), ಮಹಾಮಾಲೀ Mahamali (a long row), ಸರ್ಪಾಸ್ಯಃ Sarpasya (serpent-mouthed), ರುಧಿರಾಶನಃ Rudhirasana (one who feeds on blood), ಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯಾಃ Mahaveerya (mighty), ಏತೇ all of them, ದ್ವಾದಶ twelve, ಖರಮ್ ಅಭಿತಃ ahead of Khara, ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥುಃ marched.
Surrounded by twelve valiant warriors like Syenagami, Pruthugreeva, Yagnasatru, Vihangama, Durjaya, Karaviraksha, Parusha, Kalakarmuka, Meghmali, Mahamali, Sarpasya and Rudhirasana, Khara proceeded.
ಮಹಾಕಪಾಲಿಸ್ಸ್ಥೂಲಾಕ್ಷಃ ಪ್ರಮಾಥೀ ತ್ರಿಶಿರಾಸ್ತಥಾ.
ಚತ್ವಾರ ಏತೇ ಸೇನಾನ್ಯೋ ದೂಷಣಂ ಪೃಷ್ಠತೋ ಯಯುಃ৷৷3.23.34৷৷

ಮಹಾಕಪಾಲಿಃ Mahakapali (one with a big skull), ಸ್ಥೂಲಾಕ್ಷಃ Sthulaksha (big-eyed), ಪ್ರಮಾಥೀ Pramathi (crusher of enemy), ತಥಾ similarly, ತ್ರಿಶಿರಾಃ Trisira (three-headed one), ಏತೇ all of them, ಚತ್ವಾರಃ four, ಸೇನಾನ್ಯಃ army men, ದೂಷಣಂ ಪರಿತಃ around Dusana, ಯಯುಃ walked.
Similarly Dusana proceeded with four - Mahakapali, Sthulaksha, Pramathi and Trisira - around him.
ಸಾ ಭೀಮವೇಗಾ ಸಮರಾಭಿಕಾಮಾ ಮಹಾಬಲಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸವೀರಸೇನಾ.

The mighty, swift-footed army of valiant demons surrounded the princes (Rama and Lakshmana) all on a sudden like the planets around the Sun and the Moon.
