[Khara sees dreadful omens.]
తస్మిన్యాతే బలే ఘోరమశివం శోణితోదకమ్.

గర్దభారుణః dark like the colour of an ass, తుములః fierce, మహామేఘః huge cloud, తస్మిన్ that army, యాతే marched, తత్ there, ఘోరమ్ dreadful, బలమ్ army, అశివమ్ inauspicious, శోణితోదకమ్ water red as blood, అభ్యవర్షత్ rained.
As the army marched from there (Janasthana) a huge dark cloud of the colour of an ass rained dreadful inauspicious water, red as blood.
నిపేతుస్తురగాస్తస్య రథయుక్తా మహాజవాః.
సమే పుష్పచితే దేశే రాజమార్గే యదృచ్ఛయా৷৷3.23.2৷৷

రథయుక్తాః yoked to the chariot, మహాజవాః of high speed, తస్య his, తురగాః horses, రాజమార్గే on the highway, పుష్పచితే సమే sprinkled with flowers evenly, దేశే place, యదృచ్ఛయా casually, నిపేతుః stumbled.
The swift horses yoked to the chariot stumbled casually while galloping on the plane highway sprinkled with flowers.
శ్యామం రుధిరపర్యన్తం బభూవ పరివేషణమ్.

దివాకరమ్ Sun, పరిగృహ్య took position, శ్యామమ్ dark, రుధిరపర్యన్తమ్ red in the periphery, అలాతచక్రప్రతిమమ్ moving firebrand creating a ring, పరివేషణమ్ surrounding, బభూవ appeared,
A dark ring, blood-red in colour appeared on the border of the Sun's orb, dark in the
middle. This phenomenon of the Sun appeared like a ring of moving charcoal covering the Sun.
తతో ధ్వజముపాగమ్య హేమదణ్డం సముచ్ఛ్రితమ్.

A huge vulture, frightening to look at flew up and sat on top of the flag on the staff of gold.
జనస్థానసమీపే తు సమాగమ్య ఖరస్వనాః.

ఖరస్వనాః of harsh voice, మాంసాదాః flesh-eating, మృగపక్షిణః beasts and birds, జనస్థానసమీపే near Janasthana, సమాగమ్య flocking, వివిధాన్ different kinds of, విస్వరాన్ hoarse voice, చక్రుః created.
Flesh-eating beasts and birds flocked at Janasthana producing a cacophony.
వ్యాజహ్రుశ్చ ప్రదీప్తాయాం దిశి వై భైరవస్వనమ్.
అశివం యాతుధానానాం శివా ఘోరా మహాస్వనాః৷৷3.23.6৷৷

ఘోరాః frightful, మహాస్వనాః ghastly howls, శివాః jackals, ప్రదీప్తాయామ్ in the illuminated, దిశి direction, భైరవస్వనమ్ terrible sound, యాతుధానానామ్ of demons, అశివమ్ inauspicious, వ్యాజహ్రుః indicated.
The dreadful jackals making ghastly howls turning towards the illuminated direction and produced frightening sounds indicating inauspicious time for the demons.
ప్రభిన్నగిరిసఙ్కాశాస్తోయశోణితధారిణః.
ఆకాశం తదనాకాశం చక్రుర్భీమా వలాహకాః৷৷3.23.7৷৷

ప్రభిన్నగిరిసఙ్కాశాః those looking like shattered mountains, తోయశోణితధారిణః clouds bearing blood-like water, భీమాః most frightening, వలాహకాః clouds, తత్ that, ఆకాశమ్ sky, అనాకాశమ్ other than the sky, చక్రుః rendered.
The clouds looked like shattered mountains pouring down blood-like rain which filled the sky and made it appear frighteningly different.
బభూవ తిమిరం ఘోరముద్ధతం రోమహర్షణమ్.
దిశో వా విదిశో వాపి న చ వ్యక్తం చకాశిరే৷৷3.23.8৷৷

ఘోరమ్ terrible, ఉద్ధతమ్ arose, రోమహర్షణమ్ horripilation, తిమిరమ్ darkness, బభూవ became, దిశో వా whether quarters, విదిశో వాపి or the intermediary, వ్యక్తమ్ clearly, న చకాశిరే did not shine.
A terrific darkness, spread all over, produced frightening horripilation. Even the four quarters and the intermediary zones were not discernible.
క్షతజార్ద్రసవర్ణాభా సన్ధ్యాకాలం వినా బభౌ.
ఖరస్యాభిముఖా నేదుస్తదా ఘోరమృగాః ఖగాః৷৷3.23.9৷৷
కఙ్కగోమాయుగృధ్రాశ్చ చుక్రుశుర్భయశంసినః.

కాలం వినా before Sunset, క్షతజార్ద్రసవర్ణాభా glow like a fresh wound, సన్ధ్యా twilight, బభౌ appeared, తదా then, ఘోరమృగాః dreadful animals, ఖగాః birds, ఖరస్య of Khara, అభిముఖాః directed towards, నేదుః produced sounds, కఙ్కగోమాయుగృధ్రాశ్చ kanka birds, jackals, and vultures, భయశంసినః indicating danger, చక్రుశుః screeched.
Even before Sunset the twilight looked like a fresh wound. Then wild animals, birds, kankas, jackals and vultures facing towards Khara screeched, indicating danger.
నిత్యాశుభకరా యుద్ధే శివా ఘోరనిదర్శనాః৷৷3.23.10৷৷
నేదుర్బలస్యాభిముఖం జ్వాలోద్గారిభిరాననైః.

యుద్ధే in war, నిత్యాశుభకరాః always ominous, ఘోరనిదర్శనాః dreadful premonitions, శివాః jackals, జ్వాలోద్గారిభిః as if emitting fire, ఆననైః with their faces, బలస్య of the army, అభిముఖమ్ facing towards, నేదుః produced sounds.
Bad omens that always bring inauspiciousness were a dreadful evidence of what is going to happen. Jackals howled, facing Khara's army with their mouths emitting fire.
కబన్ధః పరిఘాభాసో దృశ్యతే భాస్కరాన్తికే৷৷3.23.11৷৷
జగ్రాహ సూర్యం స్వర్భానురపర్వణి మహాగ్రహః.
ప్రవాతి మారుతశ్శీఘ్రం నిష్ప్రభోభూద్దివాకరః৷৷3.23.12৷৷

భాస్కరాన్తికే close to the Sun, పరిఘాభాసః appearing like an iron beam, కబన్ధ: Ketu, దృశ్యతే seen, మహాగ్రహః a great planet, స్వర్భానుః Rahu, అపర్వణి other than the new Moon, సూర్యమ్ Sun, జగ్రాహ eclipsed, మారుతః wind, శీఘ్రమ్ swiftly, ప్రవాతి blew, దివాకరః Sun, నిష్ప్రభః without lustre, అభూత్ appeared.
The planet Ketu appeared like an iron beam near the Sun. Although it was not the fullmoon or newmoon day, Rahu eclipsed the Sun. Wind blew hard and the Sun was lustreless.
ఉత్పేతుశ్చ వినా రాత్రిం తారాః ఖద్యోతసప్రభాః.
సంలీనమీనవిహగా నలిన్యశ్శుష్కపఙ్కజాః৷৷3.23.13৷৷
తస్మిన్ క్షణే బభూవుశ్చ వినా పుష్పఫలైర్ద్రుమాః.

తస్మిన్ క్షణే బభూవుశ్చ వినా పుష్పఫలైర్ద్రుమాః.
ఖద్యోతసమ్ప్రభాః glittering like fire-flies, తారాః stars, వినా without, రాత్రిమ్ night, ఉత్పేతుః rose, సంలీనమీనవిహగాః fishes and birds disappear, నలిన్యః lotus-ponds, శుష్కపఙ్కజాః have dried up lotuses, తస్మిన్ in that, క్షణే moment, ద్రుమాః trees, పుష్పఫలైః flowers and fruits, వినా without, బభూవుశ్చ became.
The stars rose in the sky and glittered like fire-flies even before night arrived. The fishes and the aquatic birds in the lotus-ponds hid themselves under water. Lotuses dried up in tanks and the trees stood bereft of flowers and fruits.
ఉద్ధూతశ్చ వినా వాతం రేణుర్జలధరారుణః৷৷3.23.14৷৷
వీచీకూచీతి వాశ్యన్త్యో బభూవుస్తత్ర శారికాః.
వీచీకూచీతి వాశ్యన్త్యో బభూవుస్తత్ర శారికాః.
వినా వాతమ్ without wind, జలధరారుణః like a brownish cloud, రేణుః dust, ఉద్ధూతః rose up, తత్ర there, శారికాః sarika bird, వీచీకూచీతి thoughtlessly, వాశ్యన్త్యః singing, బభూవుః been.
Although there was no wind, dust rose like a brown cloud and the sarika birds sang (vichi kuchi) thoughtlessly.
ఉల్కాశ్చాపి సనిర్ఘాతా నిపేతుర్ఘోరదర్శనాః৷৷3.23.15৷৷
ప్రచచాల మహీ సర్వా సశైలవనకాననా.
ప్రచచాల మహీ సర్వా సశైలవనకాననా.
ఘోరదర్శనాః dreadful in appearance, సనిర్ఘాతాః thunderstorms, ఉల్కాశ్చాపి meteors, నిపేతుః dropped down, సశైలవనకాననా mountains, groves and forests, సర్వాః all, మహీ earth, ప్రచచాల trembled.
Dreadful to watch were the thunderstorms and the meteors that dropped down from the sky. The earth trembled all over with mountains, groves and forests.
ఖరస్య చ రథస్థస్య నర్దమానస్య ధీమతః৷৷3.23.16৷৷
ప్రాకమ్పత భుజస్సవ్యస్స్వరశ్చాస్యావసజ్జత.
ప్రాకమ్పత భుజస్సవ్యస్స్వరశ్చాస్యావసజ్జత.
రథస్థస్య stationed on the chariot, నర్దమానస్య shouting, ధీమతః intelligent , ఖరస్య of Khara, సవ్యః left, భుజః shoulder, ప్రాకమ్పత shook violently, అస్య his, స్వరశ్చ throat also, అవసజ్జత throttled.
While the intelligent and courageous Khara was seated on the chariot and shouting,
his left shoulder shook violently and throat throttled.
సాస్రా సమ్పద్యతే దృష్టిః పశ్యమానస్య సర్వతః৷৷3.23.17৷৷
లలాటే చ రుజా జాతా న చ మోహాన్యవర్తత.
లలాటే చ రుజా జాతా న చ మోహాన్యవర్తత.
సర్వతః around, పశ్యమానస్య while watching, దృష్టిః sight, సాస్రా filled with tears, సమ్పద్యతే became, లలాటే on the forehead, రుజా చ uneasiness, జాతా had developed, మోహాత్ due to delusion, న not, చ న్యవర్తత did not retreat.
While watching all this, his eyes brimmed with tears. His forehead ached. Yet he was too deluded to beat a retreat.
తాన్సమీక్షయ మహోత్పాతానుత్థితాన్రోమహర్షణాన్৷৷3.23.18৷৷
అబ్రవీద్రాక్షసాన్సర్వాన్ప్రహసన్సఖరస్తదా.
అబ్రవీద్రాక్షసాన్సర్వాన్ప్రహసన్సఖరస్తదా.
సః ఖరః that Khara, తదా then, ఉత్థితాన్ occurring, రోమహర్షణాన్ horripilation, తాన్ those, మహోత్పాతాన్ most dreadful phenomena, సమీక్ష్య after watching, ప్రహసన్ while laughing, సర్వాన్ all, రాక్షసాన్ demous, అబ్రవీత్ said.
Looking at these dreadful, horripilating occurrences Khara laughed and said to the demons:
మహోత్పాతానిమాన్సర్వానుత్థితాన్ఘోరదర్శనాన్৷৷3.23.19৷৷
న చిన్తయామ్యహం వీర్యాద్బలవాన్దుర్బలానివ.
న చిన్తయామ్యహం వీర్యాద్బలవాన్దుర్బలానివ.
ఉత్థితాన్ produced, ఘోరదర్శనాన్ those terrific to see, ఇమాన్ these, మహోత్పాతాన్ the events boding calamity, సర్వాన్ all, అహమ్ I, వీర్యాత్ due to valour, బలవాన్ strong, దుర్బలానివ as he deals with the weak, న చిన్తయామి I do not take them seriously.
Valiant and strong, I do not take seriously these terrifying omens boding calamity just as a strong man does not care for the weak.
తారా అపి శరైస్తీక్ష్ణైః పాతయామి నభస్స్థలాత్৷৷3.23.20৷৷
మృత్యుం మరణధర్మేణ సఙ్క్రుద్ధో యోజయామ్యహమ్.
మృత్యుం మరణధర్మేణ సఙ్క్రుద్ధో యోజయామ్యహమ్.
అహమ్ I, తారాః stars, అపి even, తీక్ష్ణైః with sharp, శరైః by arrows, నభస్స్థలాత్ from the sky, పాతయామి I will dislodge, సఙ్క్రుద్ధః if angered, మృత్యుమ్ god of death, మరణధర్మేణ mortal nature, యోజయామి will cause.
With my sharp arrows I can even bring down the stars from the sky. If angered, I can cause mortality to the god of death.
రాఘవం తం బలోత్సిక్తం భ్రాతరం చాస్య లక్ష్మణమ్৷৷3.23.21৷৷
అహత్వా సాయకైస్తీక్ష్ణైర్నోపావర్తితుముత్సహే.
అహత్వా సాయకైస్తీక్ష్ణైర్నోపావర్తితుముత్సహే.
బలోత్సిక్తమ్ man proud of his strength, తం రాఘవమ్ to that Rama, అస్య and his, భ్రాతరమ్ brother, లక్ష్మణం చ and Lakshmana, తీక్ష్ణైః by sharp, సాయకైః with arrows, అహత్వా without killing, ఉపావర్తితుమ్ to return, నోత్సహే I am not intending.
I do not wish to return, without killing with my sharp arrows that Rama who is proud of his strength and his brother Lakshmana.
సకామా భగినీ మేస్తు పీత్వా తు రుధిరం తయోః৷৷3.23.22৷৷
యన్నిమిత్తస్తు రామస్య లక్ష్మణస్య విపర్యయః.
యన్నిమిత్తస్తు రామస్య లక్ష్మణస్య విపర్యయః.
రామస్య Rama's, లక్ష్మణస్య Lakshmana's, విపర్యయః adversity, యన్నిమిత్తః for whose cause, మే భగినీ my sister, తయోః their, రుధిరమ్ blood, పీత్వా after drinking, సకామా her desire, అస్తు be fulfilled,
Let my sister be satisfied by drinking the blood of both Rama and Lakshmana on whose account this adversity has come.
న క్వచిత్ప్రాప్తపూర్వో మే సంయుగేషు పరాజయః৷৷3.23.23৷৷
యుష్మాకమేతత్ప్రత్యక్షం నానృతం కథయామ్యహమ్.
యుష్మాకమేతత్ప్రత్యక్షం నానృతం కథయామ్యహమ్.
మే for me, సంయుగేషు in wars, క్వచిత్ ever, పరాజయః defeat, న ప్రాప్తపూర్వః never faced, ఏతత్ this, యుష్మాకమ్ all of you, ప్రత్యక్షమ్ directly witnessed, అహమ్ I, అనృతమ్ untruth, న కథయామి I am not telling.
I have never faced defeat in wars, and all of you have seen it with your eyes. I am not telling you a lie.
దేవరాజమపి క్రుద్ధో మత్తైరావతయాయినమ్৷৷3.23.24৷৷
వజ్రహస్తం రణే హన్యాం కిం పునస్తౌ కుమానుషౌ.
వజ్రహస్తం రణే హన్యాం కిం పునస్తౌ కుమానుషౌ.
క్రుద్ధః angered, మత్తైరావతయాయినమ్ riding an intoxicated Airavata, వజ్రహస్తమ్ one who wields thunderbolt, దేవరాజమపి even the king of the gods, రణే in war, హన్యామ్ I will kill, తౌ both of them, కుమానుషౌ human beings, కిం పునః should I say again.
When angry, I can kill even (Indra) the wielder of the thunderbolt, rider of the intoxicated Airavata and lord of the gods. What to speak of these two petty humans?
సా తస్య గర్జితం శ్రుత్వా రాక్షసస్య మహాచమూః৷৷3.23.25৷৷
ప్రహర్షమతులం లేభే మృత్యుపాశావపాశితా.
ప్రహర్షమతులం లేభే మృత్యుపాశావపాశితా.
మృత్యుపాశావపాశితా fallen into the trap of death, సా that, మహాచమూః great army, తస్య రాక్షసస్య of the demon, గర్జితమ్ roaring, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, అతులమ్ immeasureable, ప్రహర్షమ్ joy, లేభే experienced.
Fallen into the death-trap, the great army of the demon, felt very happy on hearing Khara roaring.
సమీయుశ్చ మహాత్మానో యుద్ధదర్శనకాఙ్క్షిణః৷৷3.23.26৷৷
ఋషయో దేవగన్దర్వాస్సిద్ధాశ్చ సహచారణైః.
ఋషయో దేవగన్దర్వాస్సిద్ధాశ్చ సహచారణైః.
మహాత్మానః great souls, ఋషయః sages, దేవగన్ధర్వాః gods and gandharvas, సిద్ధాశ్చ: siddhas (accomplished spiritually), చారణైః సహ including celestial bards, యుద్ధదర్శనకాఙ్క్షిణః desirous of seeing the war, సమీయుః assembled.
Great souls like sages, gods, gandharvas, and siddhas including celestial bards assembled to see the battle.
సమేత్య చోచుస్సహితాస్తేన్యోన్యం పుణ్యకర్మణః.
స్వస్తి గోబ్రాహ్మణేభ్యోస్తు లోకానాం యేభిసఙ్గతాః৷৷3.23.27৷৷
స్వస్తి గోబ్రాహ్మణేభ్యోస్తు లోకానాం యేభిసఙ్గతాః৷৷3.23.27৷৷
పుణ్యకర్మణః holy men, తే they, సమేత్య collecting together, అన్యోన్యమ్ to one another, సహితాః together, గోబ్రాహ్మణేభ్యః for cows and brahmins, లోకానాం of the people, సర్వశః all over, స్వస్తి అస్తు let it be auspicious, ఊచుః they spoke, యే who, అమిసఙ్గతాః associated
Holy men assembled and uttered benedictions, saying, 'let there be well-being for the cows and brahmins associated with men of pious deeds in all the (three) worlds.
జయతాం రాఘవస్సంఖ్యే పౌలస్త్యాన్ రజనీచరాన్৷৷3.23.28৷৷
చక్రహస్తో యథా యుద్ధే సర్వానసురపుఙ్గవాన్.
చక్రహస్తో యథా యుద్ధే సర్వానసురపుఙ్గవాన్.
చక్రహస్తః wielder of the wheel (Visnu), యుద్ధే in war, సర్వాన్ all, అసురపఙ్గవాన్ chiefs of demons, యథా like, రాఘవః Rama, పౌలస్త్యాన్ all descendants of Paulastya, సఙ్ఖ్యే in war, రజనీచరాన్ night-rangers (demons), జయతామ్ let him win.
'Let Rama conquer the descendants of Paulasthya in the war like Visnu, the wielder of the wheel had defeated great demons'.
ఏతచ్చాన్యచ్చ బహుశో బ్రువాణాః పరమర్షయః৷৷3.23.29৷৷
జాతకౌతూహలాస్తత్ర విమానస్థాశ్చ దేవతాః.
దదృశుర్వాహినీం తేషాం రాక్షసానాం గతాయుషామ్৷৷3.23.30৷৷
జాతకౌతూహలాస్తత్ర విమానస్థాశ్చ దేవతాః.
దదృశుర్వాహినీం తేషాం రాక్షసానాం గతాయుషామ్৷৷3.23.30৷৷
ఏతచ్చాన్యచ్చ these matters, బహుశః more and more, బ్రువాణాః while talking, పరమర్షయః great ascetics, తత్ర there, విమానస్థాః occupants of heavenly chariots, దేవతాశ్చ gods too, జాతకౌతూహలాః with much eagerness, గతాయుషామ్ those of reduced life span, తేషామ్ of those, రాక్షసానామ్ of demons, వాహినీమ్ army, దదృశుః saw.
The great ascetics were talking thus and more. The gods waiting eagerly on heavenly chariots saw the army of the demons whose life span was shortened (who were doomed to death).
రథేన తు ఖరో వేగాదుగ్రసైన్యో వినిస్సృతః.
తం దృష్ట్వా రాక్షసం భూయో రాక్షసాశ్చ వినిస్సృతాః৷৷3.23.31৷৷

ఉగ్రసైన్యః terrific army, ఖరః Khara, రథేన on the chariot, వేగాత్ speedily, వినిస్సృతః drove fast, తం రాక్షసమ్ that demon also, దృష్ట్వా seeing, భూయః again, రాక్షసాః demons, వినిస్సృతాః marched.
Seeing Khara, their chief on the chariot driving fast, the army of demons too marched forward.
శ్యేనగామీ పృథుగ్రీవో యజ్ఞశత్రుర్విహఙ్గమః.
దుర్జయః కరవీరాక్షః పరుషః కాలకార్ముకః৷৷3.23.32৷৷
మేఘమాలీ మహామాలీ సర్వాస్యో రుధిరాశనః.
ద్వాదశైతే మహావీర్యాః ప్రతస్థురభితః ఖరమ్৷৷3.23.33৷৷
దుర్జయః కరవీరాక్షః పరుషః కాలకార్ముకః৷৷3.23.32৷৷
మేఘమాలీ మహామాలీ సర్వాస్యో రుధిరాశనః.

శ్యేనగామీ moving like a hawk, పృథుగ్రీవః Pruthugreeva (one with a big neck), యజ్ఞశత్రుః Yagnasatru (enemy of sacrifices), విహఙ్గమః Vihangama (who knows how to move in the sky), దుర్జయః Durjaya (an invincible one), కరవీరాక్షః Karaviraksha (one whose eyes are like the oleander flower), పరుషః Parusha (harsh), కాలకార్ముకః Kalakarmuka (bow of death), మేఘమాలీ Meghamali (clouds in a row), మహామాలీ Mahamali (a long row), సర్పాస్యః Sarpasya (serpent-mouthed), రుధిరాశనః Rudhirasana (one who feeds on blood), మహావీర్యాః Mahaveerya (mighty), ఏతే all of them, ద్వాదశ twelve, ఖరమ్ అభితః ahead of Khara, ప్రతస్థుః marched.
Surrounded by twelve valiant warriors like Syenagami, Pruthugreeva, Yagnasatru, Vihangama, Durjaya, Karaviraksha, Parusha, Kalakarmuka, Meghmali, Mahamali, Sarpasya and Rudhirasana, Khara proceeded.

మహాకపాలిః Mahakapali (one with a big skull), స్థూలాక్షః Sthulaksha (big-eyed), ప్రమాథీ Pramathi (crusher of enemy), తథా similarly, త్రిశిరాః Trisira (three-headed one), ఏతే all of them, చత్వారః four, సేనాన్యః army men, దూషణం పరితః around Dusana, యయుః walked.
Similarly Dusana proceeded with four - Mahakapali, Sthulaksha, Pramathi and Trisira - around him.
సా భీమవేగా సమరాభికామా మహాబలా రాక్షసవీరసేనా.

భీమవేగాః very fast, సమరాభికామాః eager for war, మహాబలాః mighty, సా that, రాక్షసవీరసేనా the heroic army of demons, సహసా at once, గ్రహాణామ్ of planets, మాలా garland, చన్ద్రసూర్యౌ ఇవ like Sun and Moon, తౌ those, రాజపుత్రౌ king's sons, అభ్యుపేతా: attacked.
The mighty, swift-footed army of valiant demons surrounded the princes (Rama and Lakshmana) all on a sudden like the planets around the Sun and the Moon.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే త్రయోవింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the twentythird sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
