[Rama's fight with Trisira -- death of Trisira.]

kharaṅ tu rāmābhimukhaṅ prayāntaṅ vāhinīpatiḥ.

rākṣasastriśirā nāma sannipatyēdamabravīt৷৷3.27.1৷৷


rāmābhimukham approaching Rama, prayāntam marching towards, kharam Khara, vāhinīpatiḥ chief of army, triśirāḥ Trisira, nāma by name, rākṣasaḥ demon, sannipatya going near, idam these words, abravīt spoke.

As Khara advanced towards Rama, Trisira the chief of the army approached him and said these words:
māṅ niyōjaya vikrānta sannivartasva sāhasāt.

paśya rāmaṅ mahābāhuṅ saṅyugē vinipātitam৷৷3.27.2৷৷


vikrāntaḥ valiant Khara, mām me, niyōjaya assign, sāhasāt audacity, nivartasva put down, saṅyugē in the combat, vinipātitam thrown down, mahābāhum mighty-armed , rāmam Rama, paśya you can see.

O valiant one! assign this work to me. Refrain from this audacity. See how I am going to put down the mighty-armed Rama in the battle.
pratijānāmi tē satyamāyudhaṅ cāhamālabhē.

yathā rāmaṅ vadhiṣyāmi vadhārhaṅ sarvarakṣasām৷৷3.27.3৷৷


aham I, tē to you, satyam truth, pratijānāmi I promise, āyudhaṅ ca on my weapon, ālabhē I am touching, yathā as, sarvarakṣasām of all demons, vadhārham should be slain, rāmam Rama, vadhiṣyāmi I will kill.

I promise you on my weapon that I will kill Rama.He who killed all demons deserves to be slain.
ahaṅ vāsya raṇē mṛtyurēṣa vā samarē mama.

vinivṛtya raṇōtsāhānmuhūrtaṅ prāśnikō bhava৷৷3.27.4৷৷


raṇōtsāhāt from the enthusiasm to fight, vinivṛtya restraining, raṇē in fight, aham I, asya his, mṛtyuḥ death, vā or, samarē in war, ēṣaḥ this person, mama mine, muhūrtam for a moment, prāśnikaḥ a judge bhava become.

Restrain yourself for a moment from the enthusiasm to fight the war. Please act as an arbitrator and see who is killing whom.
prahṛṣṭō vā hatē rāmē janasthānaṅ prayāsyasi.

mayi vā nihatē rāmaṅ saṅyugāyōpayāsyasi৷৷3.27.5৷৷


rāmē when Rama, hatē is killed, prahṛṣṭaḥ with joy, janasthānam to Janasthanam, prayāsyasi vā you will go or else, mayi vā when myself, nihatē am killed, saṅyugāya to the fight, rāmam Rama, upayāsyasi vā you can fight.

If Rama is killed be happy and go to Janasthana or else if I am killed you can fight.
kharastriśirasā tēna mṛtyulōbhātprasāditaḥ.

gaccha yudhyētyanujñātō rāghavābhimukhō yayau৷৷3.27.6৷৷


kharaḥ Khara, tēna by him, triśirasā by Trisira, mṛtyulōbhāt due to eagerness to face death, prasāditaḥ persuaded, gaccha you may go, yudhya you may fight, iti thus, anujñātaḥ permitted, rāghavābhimukhaḥ forward to Rama, yayau he went.

When Khara was prevailed upon by Trisara in that manner with a wish to face death, Khara permitted him by saying 'You may go and fight'.Accordingly he advanced towards Rama.
triśirāśca rathēnaiva vājiyuktēna bhāsvatā.

abhyadravadraṇē rāmaṅ triśṛṅga iva parvataḥ৷৷3.27.7৷৷


triśirāśca Trisira also, vājiyuktēna horses harnessed, bhāsvatā shining, rathēnaiva in a chariot, triśṛṅgaḥ three peaked Trishringa, parvataḥ iva mountain like, raṇē in war, rāmam Rama, abhyadravat attacked.

Trisira who looked a mountain with three peaks also got horses harnessed to a shining chariot and to attack Rama proceeded.
śaradhārāsamūhānsa mahāmēgha ivōtsṛjan.

vyasṛjatsadṛśaṅ nādaṅ jalārdrasya tu dundubhēḥ৷৷3.27.8৷৷


saḥ that Trisira, mahāmēgha iva like a huge cloud, śaradhārāsamūhān streams of arrows, utsṛjan unleashing, jalārdrasya drenched with water, dundubhēḥ of the drum, sadṛśam similar, nādam sound, vyasṛjat released.

Trisira unleashed a stream of arrows like a huge cloud (releasing rain). They produced sound, a drum drenched with water, creates.
āgacchantaṅ triśirasaṅ rākṣasaṅ prēkṣya rāghavaḥ.

dhanuṣā pratijagrāha vidhunvansāyakān śitān৷৷3.27.9৷৷


rāghavaḥ Rama, āgacchantam advancing towards him, rākṣasam the demon, triśirasam Trisira, prēkṣaya observing, śitān sharp, sāyakān arrow, dhanuṣā setting the bow, vidhunvan shaking, pratijagrāha retaliated.

On seeing demon Trisira advancing towards him, Rama shook sharp arrows off his bow.
sa samprahārastumulō rāmatriśirasōrmahān.

babhūvātīva balinōssiṅhakuñjarayōriva৷৷3.27.10৷৷


rāmatriśirasōḥ between Rama and Trisira, tumulaḥ tumultuous, mahān great, saḥ samprahāraḥ that fight, atīva very, balinōḥ strong ones, siṅhakuñjarayōḥ iva as between a lion and an elephant, babhūva took place.

The tumultuous combat between Rama and Trisira looked like the strong fight between a lion and an elephant.
tatastriśirasā bāṇairlalāṭē tāḍitastribhiḥ.

āmarṣī kupitōrāmassaṅrabdhamidamabravīt৷৷3.27.11৷৷


tataḥ then, amarṣī intolerant, rāmaḥ Rama, triśirasā by Trisira, tribhiḥ with three, bāṇaiḥ arrows, lalāṭē on the forehead, tāḍitaḥ was hit, kupitaḥ a furious one, saṅrabdham very agitated, idam this way, abravīt he said.

Then Rama hit with three arrows on the forehead by Trisira flew into a fury and said in a state of great excitement:
ahō vikramaśūrasya rākṣasasyēdṛśaṅ balam.

puṣpairiva śarairyasya lalāṭē.sminparikṣataḥ৷৷3.27.12৷৷


ahō Oh!, vikramaśūrasya of an undaunted hero, rākṣasasya of the demon, balam strength, īdṛśam this amount, yasya his, śaraiḥ with arrows, puṣpairiva with flowers, asmin lalāṭē this forehead, parikṣataḥ scratched.

Oh! see the strength of this undaunted demon whose arrows fell like flowers on my forehead and only left a scratch.
mamāpi pratigṛhṇīṣva śarāṅścāpaguṇāccyutān.

ēvamuktvā tu saṅrabdhaśśarānāśīviṣōpamān.3.27.13৷৷

triśirōvakṣasi kruddhō nijaghāna caturdaśa.


mama my, cāpaguṇātaccyutān released from the string of the bow, śarānapi arrows too, pratigṛhṇīṣva you may receive, ēvam in that manner, uktvā having said, saṅrabdhaḥ agitated, kruddhaḥ angry, aśīviṣōpamān like the poison of a venomous snake, caturdaśa fourteen, śarān arrows, triśirōvakṣasi on the chest of Trisira, nijaghāna hit.

Receive the arrows released from my bow-string. Saying so, the angry and agitated Rama discharged fourteen arrows, venomous like a snake, on the chest of Trisira .
caturbhisturagānasya śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ৷৷3.27.14৷৷

nyapātayata tējasvī caturastasya vājinaḥ.


tējasvī mighty man, sannataparvabhiḥ with those having strong joints, caturbhiḥ with four, śaraiḥ with arrows, tasya his, asya his (Rama's), turagān swift, caturaḥ four, vājinaḥ horses, nyapātayata threw down.

With four arrows having strong joints, the mighty hero (Rama) threw down his enemy's four swift-footed horses.
aṣṭabhissāyakaissūtaṅ rathōpasthānnyapātayat৷৷3.27.15৷৷

rāmaścicchēda bāṇēna dhvajaṅ cāsya samucchritam.


rāmaḥ Rama, aṣṭabhiḥ with eight, sāyakaiḥ arrows, sūtam charioteer, rathōpasthāt from the top of the chariot, nyapātayat brought down, bāṇēna by one dart, asya his, samucchritam very lofty, dhvajam banner, cicchēda shattered to pieces.

Rama brought down the charioteer with eight arrows and with one tore down the lofty banner of the chariot to shreds.
tatō hatarathāttasmādutpatantaṅ niśācaram৷৷3.27.16৷৷

bibhēda rāmastaṅ bāṇairhṛdayē sō.bhavajjaḍaḥ.


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ Rama, tasmāt from that, hatarathāt from a broken chariot, utpatantam one who was running away, taṅ niśācaram that demon, bāṇaiḥ with arrows, hṛdayē in the chest, bibhēda hit, saḥ he, jaḍaḥ a numb man, abhavat became.

Rama then hit the demon with arrows on his chest while he was running away from the broken chariot. The demon became numb.
sāyakaiścāpramēyātmā sāmarṣastasya rakṣasaḥ৷৷3.27.17৷৷

śirāṅsyapātayadrāmō vēgavadbhistribhiśśitaiḥ.


apramēyātmā a man of boundless strength, rāmaḥ Rama, sāmarṣaḥ an enraged one, vēgavadbhi: swift, śitaiḥ with sharp ones, tribhiḥ three, sāyakaiḥ with arrows, tasya rakṣasaḥ that demon's, śirāṅsi head, apātayat cut down.

The mighty Rama in fury dismembered the heads of that demon with three sharp and swift arrows.
sa bhūmau rudhirōdgārī rāmabāṇābhipīḍitaḥ৷৷3.27.18৷৷

nyapatatpatitaiḥ pūrvaṅ svaśirōbhirniśācaraḥ.


rāmabāṇābhipīḍitaḥ hit by the arrows of Rama, saḥ niśācaraḥ that demon, rudhirōdgārī vomitting blood, pūrvam a little while ago, patitaiḥ fallen down, svaśirōbhiḥ with his heads, nyapatat fell down.

The demon with his heads decapitated, hit by Rama's arrows a little while ago, fell down, vomitting blood.
hataśēṣāstatō bhagnā rākṣasāḥ kharasaṅśrayā৷৷3.27.19৷৷

dravanti sma na tiṣṭhanti vyāghratrastā mṛgā iva.


tataḥ then, kharasaṅśrayā under the protection of Khara, hataśēṣāḥ surviving, rākṣasāḥ demons, bhagnāḥ with broken hearts, vyāghratastāḥ those scared of tiger, mṛgāḥ yathā like deer, dravanti sma fast retreated, na tiṣṭhanti did not stop.

Those surviving demons who were under the protection of Khara got scared and retreated fast and fled like deer frightened by a tiger.
tānkharō dravatō dṛṣṭvā nivartya ruṣitassvayam৷৷3.27.20৷৷

rāmamēvābhidudrāva rāhuścandramasaṅ yathā.


ruṣitaḥ angry, kharaḥ Khara, dravataḥ retreating, tān them, dṛṣṭvā on seeing, svayam personally, nivartya turning them back, rāhuḥ Rahu, candramasaṅ yathā as towards Moon rāmamēva towards Rama alone, abhidudrāva ran after.

Personally persuading the fleeing army to come back, the angry Khara leaped forward towards Rama just as Rahu approaches the moon.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē saptaviṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
