[ Akampana reaches Lanka -- reveals to Ravana about the happenings at Janasthana-- describes Rama's valour-- suggests to Ravana the strategy to win Rama through the abduction of Sita-- Ravana's visit to Maricha-- Maricha's advice to Ravana.]

ತ್ವರಮಾಣಸ್ತತೋ ಗತ್ವಾ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಾದಕಮ್ಪನಃ.

ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ಲಙ್ಕಾಂ ವೇಗೇನ ರಾವಣಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷3.31.1৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಅಕಮ್ಪನಃ Akampana, ತ್ವರಮಾಣಃ hastened, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಾತ್ from Janasthana, ಗತ್ವಾ went, ವೇಗೇನ hurriedly, ಲಙ್ಕಾಮ್ Lanka, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ entered, ರಾವಣಮ್ Ravana, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Quickly did Akampana leave Janasthana, and quickly he entered Lanka. He said to Ravana:
ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಸ್ಥಿತಾ ರಾಜನ್ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾ ಬಹವೋ ಹತಾಃ.

ಖರಶ್ಚ ನಿಹತಸ್ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯೇ ಕಥಞ್ಚಿದಹಮಾಗತಃ৷৷3.31.2৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ dwelling in Janasthana, ಬಹವಃ many, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ demons, ಹತಾಃ are killed, ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯೇ in war, ಖರಶ್ಚ Khara too, ನಿಹತಃ killed, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ with much difficulty, ಆಗತಃ came.

O king! many demons dwelling at Janasthana including Khara have been killed. I manged to escape with much difficulty.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ದಶಗ್ರೀವಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧ ಸ್ಸಂರಕ್ತಲೋಚನಃ.

ಅಕಮ್ಪನಮುವಾಚೇದಂ ನಿರ್ದಹನ್ನಿವ ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ৷৷3.31.3৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in that way, ಉಕ್ತಃ been told, ದಶಗ್ರೀವಃ the ten-headed Ravana, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ angry, ಸಂರಕ್ತಲೋಚನಃ with reddened eyes, ಚಕ್ಷುಷಾ by the eyes, ನಿರ್ದಹನ್ನಿವ as if burning, ಅಕಮ್ಪನಮ್ to Akampana,
ಇದಮ್ this, ಉವಾಚ spoke.

When Akampana thus reported to the ten-headed Ravana, his eyes reddened with anger. He spoke to Akampana as if he was burning him with his eyes :
ಕೇನ ರಮ್ಯಂ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ಹತಂ ಮಮ ಪರಾಸುನಾ.

ಕೋ ಹಿ ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಲೋಕೇಷು ಗತಿಂ ಚಾಧಿಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷3.31.4৷৷


ಪರಾಸುನಾ whose life is in the enemy's hand , ಕೇನ by whom, ಮಮ my, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ beautiful, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ Janasthnam, ಹತಮ್ destroyed, ಸರ್ವೇಷು all, ಲೋಕೇಷು in the worlds, ಕಃ who, ಗತಿಮ್ death, ಅಧಿಗಮಿಷ್ಯತಿ will surely get.

He who has destroyed my beautiful Janasthana is sure to die. His life is under the control of others (his enemies). Where can he be(alive) in all the worlds?
ನ ಹಿ ಮೇ ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಶಕ್ಯಂ ಮಘವತಾ ಸುಖಮ್.

ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತುಂ ವೈಶ್ರವಣೇನಾಪಿ ನ ಯಮೇನ ನ ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ৷৷3.31.5৷৷


ಮೇ to me, ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ displeasure, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having caused, ಮಘವತಾ by Indra, ಸುಖಮ್ happily, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತುಮ್ to have, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಂ ಹಿ not possible, ವೈಶ್ರವಣೇನಾಪಿ or by Kubera (the god of wealth), ನ nor, ಯಮೇನ by Yama, ನ or, ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ by Visnu, ನ or.

One who has caused displeasure to me cannot be happy, be it Indra or Kubera, or Yama or even Visnu.
ಕಾಲಸ್ಯ ಚಾಪ್ಯಹಂ ಕಾಲೋ ದಹೇಯಮಪಿ ಪಾವಕಮ್.

ಮೃತ್ಯುಂ ಮರಣಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಸಂಯೋಜಯಿತುಮುತ್ಸಹೇ৷৷3.31.6৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕಾಲಸ್ಯ ಚಾಪಿ to Yama also, ಕಾಲಃ destroyer, ಪಾವಕಮಪಿ fire also, ದಹೇಯಮ್ I will burn, ಮೃತ್ಯುಮ್ to Yama, ಮರಣಧರ್ಮೇಣ property of death, ಸಂಯೋಜಯಿತುಮ್ unite with, ಉತ್ಸಹೇ I can do.

I am the destroyer of the destroyer (Yama). I can burn even that which burns (fire). I
can infuse Death with the characteristics of death itself.
ದಹೇಯಮಪಿ ಸಙ್ಕೃದ್ಧಸ್ತೇಜಸಾದಿತ್ಯಪಾವಕೌ.

ವಾತಸ್ಯ ತರಸಾ ವೇಗಂ ನಿಹನ್ತುಮಹಮುತ್ಸಹೇ৷৷3.31.7৷৷


ಸಙ್ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ if I am angry, ತೇಜಸಾ by my radiance, ಆದಿತ್ಯ Sun, ಪಾವಕೌ ಅಪಿ even fire, ದಹೇಯಮ್ I can burn, ತರಸಾ instantly, ವಾತಸ್ಯ wind's, ವೇಗಮ್ speed, ನಿಹನ್ತುಮ್ to arrest, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಉತ್ಸಹೇ effort.

If angry, I can burn the Sun and even fire with my radiance. I can arrest the speed of the wind instantly with my effort.
ತಥಾ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಂ ದಶಗ್ರೀವಂ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿರಕಮ್ಪನಃ.

ಭಯಾತ್ಸನ್ದಿಗ್ಧಯಾ ವಾಚಾ ರಾವಣಂ ಯಾಚತೇಭಯಮ್৷৷3.31.8৷৷


ಅಕಮ್ಪನಃ Akampana, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ತಥಾ likewise, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಮ್ angry, ದಶಗ್ರೀವಮ್ Ravana, ಭಯಾತ್ out of fear, ಸನ್ದಿಗ್ಧಯಾ hesitatengly, ವಾಚಾ speech, ಅಭಯಮ್ safety, ಯಾಚತೇ sought.

Akampana, out of fear, implored the inflamed Ravana with folded hands and faltering voice to spare him.
ದಶಗ್ರೀವೋಭಯಂ ತಸ್ಮೈ ಪ್ರದದೌ ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ವರಃ.

ಸ ವಿಸ್ರಬ್ಧೋಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಸನ್ದಿಗ್ಧಮಕಮ್ಪನಃ৷৷3.31.9৷৷


ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ of demons, ವರಃ best one, ದಶಗ್ರೀವಃ the ten-headed Ravana, ತಸ್ಮೈ to him, ಅಭಯಮ್ protection, ಪ್ರದದೌ offered, ಸಃ ಅಕಮ್ಪನಃ that Akampana, ವಿಸ್ರಬ್ಧಃ grateful, ಅಸನ್ದಿಗ್ಧಮ್ without hesitation, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

The ten-headed Ravana, lord of the demons, assured safety to Akampana, who gratefully said these words without hesitation:
ಪುತ್ರೋ ದಶರಥಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತಿ ಸಿಂಹಸಂಹನನೋ ಯುವಾ.

ರಾಮೋ ನಾಮ ವೃಷಸ್ಕನ್ಧೋ ವೃತ್ತಾಯತಮಹಾಭುಜಃ৷৷3.31.10৷৷


ಸಿಂಹಸಂಹನನಃ with the body like a lion's, ಯುವಾ youth, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ವೃಷಸ್ಕನ್ಧಃ shoulders like a bull's, ವೃತ್ತಾಯತಮಹಾಭುಜಃ round and strong arms, ರಾಮೋ ನಾಮ by name Rama, ಅಸ್ತಿ he is.

Dasaratha has a young son, by name, Rama. He has a body like a lion's. He has strong, round arms and his shoulders resemble those of a bull.
ವೀರಃ ಪೃಥುಯಶಾಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನತುಲ್ಯಬಲವಿಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಹತಂ ತೇನ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ಖರಶ್ಚ ಸಹ ದೂಷಣಃ৷৷3.31.11৷৷


ವೀರಃ hero, ಪೃಥುಯಶಾಃ of great fame, ಅತುಲ್ಯಬಲವಿಕ್ರಮಃ a man of unequal prowess, ತೇ your, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ Janasthanam, ಹತಮ್ destroyed, ಸಹದೂಷಣಃ along with Dusana, ಖರಶ್ಚ Khara too.

He is a hero of great fame and unequal prowess. He has destroyed your Janasthana and also Khara along with Dusana.
ಅಕಮ್ಪನವಚ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾವಣೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪಃ.

ನಾಗೇನ್ದ್ರ ಇವ ನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ವಚನಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷3.31.12৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪಃ lord of the demons, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ಅಕಮ್ಪನವಚಃ Akampana's words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾಃ having heard, ನಾಗೇನ್ದ್ರಃ ಇವ like the king of serpents, ನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ after sighing heavily, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಚನಂ ಚ words too, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Having heard Akampana's words, Ravana, the lord of demons, sighed heavily like the king of serpents and said these words:
ಸ ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಮರೈಸ್ಸಹ.

ಉಪಯಾತೋ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿದಕಮ್ಪನ৷৷3.31.13৷৷


ಅಕಮ್ಪನ Akampana, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by Indra, ಸರ್ವಾಮರೈಸ್ಸಹ along with all deities, ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಃ is united, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ to Janasthana, ಉಪಯಾತಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ came perhaps, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell?

Did Rama come to Janasthana with Indra and the gods ? O Akampana ! speak.
ರಾವಣಸ್ಯ ಪುನರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ತದಕಮ್ಪನಃ.

ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ ಬಲಂ ತಸ್ಯ ವಿಕ್ರಮಂ ಚ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷3.31.14৷৷


ರಾವಣಸ್ಯ Ravana's, ತತ್ that, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ನಿಶಮ್ಯ heard, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the great Rama, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಬಲಮ್ strength, ವಿಕ್ರಮಂ ಚ exploits, ಪುನಃ again, ಅಚಚಕ್ಷೇ started telling.

Hearing Ravana's words, Akampana continued telling about great Rama's strength and his exploits in war.
ರಾಮೋ ನಾಮ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಸ್ಸರ್ವಧನುಷ್ಮತಾಮ್.

ದಿವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ರಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ ಪುರನ್ದರಸಮೋ ಯುಧಿ৷৷3.31.15৷৷


ರಾಮೋ ನಾಮ Rama by name, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ very radiant, ಸರ್ವಧನುಷ್ಮತಾಮ್ among all the archers, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ best , ದಿವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ owner of divine weapons, ಯುಧಿ in war, ಪುರನ್ದರಸಮಃ like Indra.

Rama is his name. He looks very radiant. He is the best among the archers. Owner of divine weapons, he is comparable to Indra in war.
ತಸ್ಯಾನುರೂಪೋ ಬಲವಾನ್ರಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷೋ ದನ್ದುಭಿಸ್ವನಃ.

ಕನೀಯಾನ್ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಶಶಿನಿಭಾನನಃ৷৷3.31.16৷৷


ಬಲವಾನ್ strong, ರಕ್ತಾಕ್ಷಃ of bright red eyes, ದುನ್ದುಭಿಸ್ವನಃ deep resonance of a drum, ಶಶಿನಿಭಾನನಃ face like the Moon, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ Lakshmana by name, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಅನುರೂಪಃ similar in appearance, ಕನೀಯಾನ್ younger, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother.

He is strong with bright red eyes. He has a deep voice with the resonance of a drum.
His face is like the moon. Lakshmana, his younger brother, is similar to him in appearance.
ಸ ತೇನ ಸಹ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪಾವಕೇನಾನಿಲೋ ಯಥಾ.

ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ರಾಜವರಸ್ತೇನ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್৷৷3.31.17৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous , ರಾಜವರಃ best among kings, ಸಃ he, ಅನಿಲಃ wind, ಪಾವಕೇನ ಯಥಾ like with fire, ತೇನ ಸಹ along with him, ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಃ united with, ತೇನ by him, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ Janasthana, ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ is pulled down.

Rama is prosperous. He is the best among kings. Lakshmana with him is like wind with fire. Rama has pulled down Janasthana.
ನೈವ ದೇವಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನೋ ನಾತ್ರ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ ವಿಚಾರಣಾ.

ಶರಾ ರಾಮೇಣ ತೂತ್ಸೃಷ್ಟಾ ರುಕ್ಮಪುಙ್ಖಾಃ ಪತತ್ರಿಣಃ৷৷3.31.18৷৷

ಸರ್ಪಾಃ ಪಞ್ಚಾನನಾ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನ್.


ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಃ great people, ದೇವಾಃ gods, ನೈವ not, ಅತ್ರ here, ವಿಚಾರಣಾ investigate , ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ not to be done, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಉತ್ಸೃಷ್ಟಾ released, ರುಕ್ಮಪುಙ್ಖಾಃ golden-feathered, ಪತತ್ರಿಣಃ arrows, ಶರಾಃ darts, ಪಞ್ಚಾನನಾಃ five-hooded, ಸರ್ಪಾಃ serpents, ಭೂತ್ವಾ turned into, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನ್ demons, ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ consumed.

Indeed, they are great men. No god came there (to lend him a hand). There is no need to investigate further about it. The golden-feathered arrows released by Rama turned into five-hooded serpents and consumed the demons.
ಯೇನ ಯೇನ ಚ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾ ಭಯಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ.3.31.19৷৷

ತೇನ ತೇನ ಸ್ಮ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ರಾಮಮೇವಾಗ್ರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್.

ಇತ್ಥಂ ವಿನಾಶಿತಂ ತೇನ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ತವಾನಘ৷৷3.31.20৷৷


ಭಯಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ gripped by fear, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ demons, ಯೇನ ಯೇನ by whichever (path), ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ went, ತೇನ ತೇನ by the same way, ಅಗ್ರತಃ in front of them, ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ stationed, ರಾಮಮೇವ only Rama, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಸ್ಮ they saw, ಅನಘ O Sinless Sire!, ತೇನ by him, ತವ your, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ Janasthana, ಇತ್ಥಮ್ in this manner, ವಿನಾಶಿತಮ್ destroyed.

Wherever the demons went they, gripped by fear, only saw Rama in front. O sinless sire! In this manner your Janasthana was destroyed by him.
ಅಕಮ್ಪನವಚಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾವಣೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹನ್ತುಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್৷৷3.31.21৷৷


ಅಕಮ್ಪನವಚಃ Akampana's words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ hearing, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಸಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ along with Lakshmana, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಹನ್ತುಮ್ to kill, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ to Janasthana, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will go.

Hearing Akampana's words, Ravana said, I will go to Janasthana and kill Rama along with Lakshmana.
ಅಥೈವಮುಕ್ತೇ ವಚನೇ ಪ್ರೋವಾಚೇದಮಕಮ್ಪನಃ.

ಶೃಣು ರಾಜನ್ಯಥಾವೃತ್ತಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಬಲಪೌರುಷಮ್৷৷3.31.22৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in that manner, ವಚನೇ in those words, ಉಕ್ತೇ saying, ಅಕಮ್ಪನಃ Akampana, ಇದಮ್ thus, ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ spoke, ರಾಜನ್ king, ಯಥಾವೃತ್ತಮ್ what happened, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಬಲಪೌರುಷಮ್ strength and valour, ಶೃಣು listen.

Thus said by Ravana, Akampana responded, I will tell you what happened there. O king ! listen to the strength and valour of Rama.
ಅಸಾಧ್ಯಃ ಕುಪಿತೋ ರಾಮೋ ವಿಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಆಪಗಾಯಾಸ್ಸುಪೂರ್ಣಾಯಾ ವೇಗಂ ಪರಿಹರೇಚ್ಛರೈಃ৷৷3.31.23৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ man of great fame, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವಿಕ್ರಮೇಣ in valour, ಅಸಾಧ್ಯಃ irrepressible, ಕುಪಿತಃ
when outraged, ಸುಪೂರ್ಣಾಯಾಃ in full spate, ಆಪಗಾಯಾಃ of a river, ವೇಗಮ್ speed, ಶರೈಃ with arrows, ಪರಿಹರೇತ್ he may arrest.

Rama is of great fame. When outraged, he is irrepressible. He can arrest with his arrows even the speed of a river (in spate).
ಸತಾರಗ್ರಹನಕ್ಷತ್ರಂ ನಭಶ್ಚಾಪ್ಯವಸಾದಯೇತ್.

ಅಸೌ ರಾಮಸ್ತು ಸೀದನ್ತೀಂ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನಭ್ಯುದ್ಧರೇನ್ಮಹೀಮ್৷৷3.31.24৷৷


ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ powerful, ಅಸೌ ರಾಮಸ್ತು this Rama, ಸತಾರಗ್ರಹನಕ್ಷತ್ರಂ with planets and stars, ನಭಃ ಚಾಪಿ even the sky, ಅವಸಾದಯೇತ್ can destroy, ಸೀದನ್ತೀಮ್ drowning in the sea, ಮಹೀಮ್ earth, ಅಭ್ಯುದ್ಧರೇತ್ can lift up.

Powerful Rama can pull down the sky along with the planets and stars. He can lift the drowning earth from the depth of the sea.
ಭಿತ್ತ್ವಾ ವೇಲಾಂ ಸಮುದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಲೋಕಾನಾಪ್ಲಾವಯೇದ್ವಿಭುಃ.

ವೇಗಂ ವಾಪಿ ಸಮುದ್ರಸ್ಯ ವಾಯುಂ ವಾ ವಿಧಮೇಚ್ಛರೈಃ৷৷3.31.25৷৷


ವಿಭುಃ overlord, ಸಮುದ್ರಸ್ಯ of the sea, ವೇಲಾಮ್ boundary of the sea, ಭಿತ್ತ್ವಾ after breaking, ಲೋಕಾನ್ worlds, ಆಪ್ಲಾವಯೇತ್ can drown, ವೇಗಂ ವಾಪಿ also speed, ವಾಯುಂ ವಾ or wind, ಶರೈಃ by his arrows, ವಿಧಮೇತ್ arrest.

He is so very powerful that he can drown the earth by breaking the boundary of the sea. He can arrest the speed of the sea or of the wind with his arrows.
ಸಂಹೃತ್ಯ ವಾ ಪುನರ್ಲೋಕಾನ್ವಿಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ಶಕ್ತಸ್ಸಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ ಸ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಪುನರಪಿ ಪ್ರಜಾಃ৷৷3.31.26৷৷

He is a tiger among men. He is so powerful that he can destroy the world and recreate the creatures once again by his valour.
ನ ಹಿ ರಾಮೋ ದಶಗ್ರೀವ ಶಕ್ಯೋ ಜೇತುಂ ತ್ವಯಾ ಯುಧಿ.

ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ವಾಪಿ ಲೋಕೇನ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಃ ಪಾಪಜನೈರಿವ৷৷3.31.27৷৷


ದಶಗ್ರೀವ O ten-headed one, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಯುಧಿ in war, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ of demons, ಲೋಕೇನ by the world, ವಾಪಿ or ever, ಜೇತುಮ್ to win, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಃ heaven, ಪಾಪಜನೈರಿವ by sinners, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಃ not possible.

O ten-headed one, just as it is not possible for sinners to attain heaven it is not possible for you or for the entire world of demons to win him in war
ನ ತಂ ವಧ್ಯಮಹಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಸರ್ವೈರ್ದೇವಾಸುರೈರಪಿ.

ಅಯಂ ತಸ್ಯ ವಧೋಪಾಯಸ್ತನ್ಮಮೈಕಮನಾಶ್ಶೃಣು৷৷3.31.28৷৷


ಸರ್ವೈಃ by all, ದೇವಾಸುರೈರಪಿ by gods and demons together, ತಮ್ him, ವಧ್ಯಮ್ victim, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ಮನ್ಯೇ I do not think, ತಸ್ಯ his, ವಧೋಪಾಯ: means to kill, ಅಯಮ್ this, ತತ್ that, ಮಮ from me, ಏಕಮನಾಃ single-minded attention, ಶೃಣು listen.

I do not think it is possible for gods and demons together to kill him, yet there is a way for his destruction. You may listen to me with single minded-attention:
ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ತಸ್ಯೋತ್ತಮಾ ಲೋಕೇ ಸೀತಾ ನಾಮ ಸುಮಧ್ಯಮಾ.

ಶ್ಯಾಮಾ ಸಮವಿಭಕ್ತಾಙ್ಗೀ ಸ್ತ್ರೀರತ್ನಂ ರತ್ನಭೂಷಿತಾ৷৷3.31.29৷৷


ಲೋಕೇ in the world, ಉತ್ತಮಾ foremost, ಶ್ಯಾಮಾ beautiful woman, ಸಮವಿಭಕ್ತಾಙ್ಗೀ woman of well-formed limbs, ಸ್ತ್ರೀರತ್ನಂ jewel among women, ರತ್ನಭೂಷಿತಾ adorned with gems, ಸೀತಾ ನಾಮ Sita by name, ಸುಮಧ್ಯಮಾ of slender waist, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife.

Rama has a wife in this world, by name, Sita, who is beautiful, has a slender waist
and a well-formed body. Adorned with gems, she is a jewel among women,
ನೈವ ದೇವೀ ನ ಗನ್ಧರ್ವೀ ನಾಪ್ಸರಾ ನಾಪಿ ದಾನವೀ.

ತುಲ್ಯಾ ಸೀಮನ್ತಿನೀ ತಸ್ಯಾ ಮಾನುಷೀಷು ಕುತೋ ಭವೇತ್৷৷3.31.30৷৷


ತಸ್ಯಾಃ for her, ತುಲ್ಯಾ equal, ಸೀಮನ್ತಿನೀ woman, ದೇವೀ a goddess, ನೈವ not there, ಗನ್ಧರ್ವೀ gandharvi, ನ not, ಅಪ್ಸರಾಃ apsara, ನ not, ದಾನವೀ ಅಪಿ among demonesses, ನ not there, ಮಾನುಷೀಷು among humans, ಕುತಃ how can, ಭವೇತ್ she be.

She has no equal among goddesses nor among gandharvis nor apasaras nor among demonesses. How can there be a peer of her among human beings ?
ತಸ್ಯಾಪಹರ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಂತ್ವಂ ಪ್ರಮಥ್ಯ ತು ಮಹಾವನೇ.

ಸೀತಯಾ ರಹಿತಃ ಕಾಮೀ ರಾಮೋ ಹಾಸ್ಯತಿ ಜೀವಿತಮ್৷৷3.31.31৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮಹಾವನೇ in the great forest, ಪ್ರಮಥ್ಯ forcefully, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ wife, ಅಪಹರ you may abduct, ಕಾಮೀ passionate, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸೀತಯಾ by Sita, ರಹಿತಃ separated from, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ಹಾಸ್ಯತಿ will give up.

Abduct Rama's wife by force in that great forest and bereft of Sita, he will give up his life.
ಅರೋಚಯತ ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ರಾವಣೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪಃ.

ಚಿನ್ತಯಿತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುರಕಮ್ಪನಮುವಾಚ ಹ৷৷3.31.32৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪಃ king of demons, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words, ಅರೋಚಯತ relished, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ of strong arms, ಚಿನ್ತಯಿತ್ವಾ pondering over, ಅಕಮ್ಪನಮ್ to Akampana, ಉವಾಚ ಹ said.

Ravana, the strong-armed king of demons, relished the words of Akampana and pondering over the matter, said to him :
ಬಾಢಂ ಕಾಲ್ಯಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹ್ಯೇಕಸ್ಸಾರಥಿನಾ ಸಹ.

ಆನಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ವೈದೇಹೀಮಿಮಾಂ ಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ಮಹಾಪುರೀಮ್৷৷3.31.33৷৷


ಬಾಢಮ್ surely, ಕಾಲ್ಯಮ್ early in the morning, ಏಕಃ alone, ಸಾರಥಿನಾ ಸಹ along with charioteer, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will go, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ gladly, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ to Vaidehi, ಇಮಾಂ (ಮಹಾ)ಪುರೀಮ್ to this city, ಆನಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ will bring.

Yes, early in the morning I will go alone gladly with the charioteer and bring Vaidehi here to this great city.
ಅಥೈವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ಖರಯುಕ್ತೇನ ರಾವಣಃ.

ರಥೇನಾದಿತ್ಯವರ್ಣೇನ ದಿಶಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಃ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಯನ್৷৷3.31.34৷৷


ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ಏವಮ್ so, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಅಥ then, ಖರಯುಕ್ತೇನ yoked with donkeys, ಆದಿತ್ಯವರ್ಣೇನ resembling the colour of the Sun, ರಥೇನ by chariot, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ದಿಶಃ directions, ಪ್ರಕಾಶಯನ್ illuminating, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ left.

Having said so, Ravana got on a chariot yoked with donkeys. It had the colour of the Sun. It illuminated all directions. Ravana left.
ಸ ರಥೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಪಥಗೋ ಮಹಾನ್.

ಸಞ್ಚಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಶ್ಶುಶುಭೇ ಜಲದೇ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಾ ಇವ৷৷3.31.35৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ of the king of demons, ಸಞ್ಚಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಃ as he was going, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಪಥಗಃ in the sky, ಮಹಾನ್ great, ಸಃ he, ರಥಃ chariot, ಜಲದೇ in the clouds, ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಾಃ ಇವ like the Moon, ಶುಶುಭೇ shone.

The great chariot of the demon king (Ravana) flying in the sky shone like the Moon in the cloud.
ಸ ಮಾರೀಚಾಶ್ರಮಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ತಾಟಕೇಯಮುಪಾಗಮತ್.

ಮಾರೀಚೇನಾರ್ಚಿತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಭೋಜ್ಯೈರಮಾನುಷೈಃ৷৷3.31.36৷৷


ಸಃ he, ಮಾರೀಚಾಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage of Maricha, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ entering, ತಾಟಕೇಯಮ್ the son of Tataka, ಉಪಾಗಮತ್ reached, ರಾಜಾ king, ಅಮಾನುಷೈಃ unfit for human consumption, ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಭೋಜ್ಯೈಃ food to be chewed and to be eaten, ಮಾರೀಚೇನ by Maricha, ಅರ್ಚಿತ: offered.

Ravana reached the hermitage of Maricha and met him who was the son of Tataka. The demon king was treated with food that can be chewed and food that can be eaten.
ತಂ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಪೂಜಯಿತ್ವಾ ತು ಆಸನೇನೋದಕೇನ ಚ.

ಅರ್ಥೋಪಹಿತಯಾ ವಾಚಾ ಮಾರೀಚೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷3.31.37৷৷


ಮಾರೀಚಃ Maricha, ತಮ್ to him, ಆಸನೇನ by offering a seat, ಉದಕೇನ ಚ and water, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಪೂಜಯಿತ್ವಾ after offering obeisance, ಅರ್ಥೋಪಹಿತಯಾ in a meaningful manner, ವಾಚಾ with words, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Maricha personally offered Ravana a seat. He offered him water and paid him obeisance. Making meaningful enquiries he said in appropriate words :
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸುಕುಶಲಂ ರಾಜನ್ಲೋಕಾನಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರ.

ಆಶಙ್ಕೇ ನಾಥ ಜಾನೇ ತ್ವಂ ಯತಸ್ತೂರ್ಣಮಿಹಾಗತಃ৷৷3.31.38৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರ O lord of demons ! ರಾಜನ್ king, ಲೋಕಾನಾಮ್ of the world, ಸುಕುಶಲಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ hope every one is fine, ನಾಥ O lord, ಯತಃ since, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ so quickly, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತಃ have come, ಆಶಙ್ಕೇ doubt, ಜಾನೇ know.

O lord of demons ! O king! hope every one is fine in the world of demons. O lord, (though) your sudden arrival puts me in doubt (about everything going right).
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಮಾರೀಚೇನ ಸ ರಾವಣಃ.

ತತಃ ಪಶ್ಚಾದಿದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಕೋವಿದಃ৷৷3.31.39৷৷


ಮಾರೀಚೇನ by Maricha, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ having spoken, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ glorious, ವಾಕ್ಯಕೋವಿದಃ one who is eloquent in speech, ಸಃ he, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ತತಃ then, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ later, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Having thus been asked by Maricha, glorious Ravana, who was eloquent in speech, spoke to him :
ಆರಕ್ಷೋ ಮೇ ಹತಸ್ತಾತ ರಾಮೇಣಾಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾ.

ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮವಧ್ಯ ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಯುಧಿ ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್৷৷3.31.40৷৷

ತಸ್ಯ ಮೇ ಕುರು ಸಾಚಿವ್ಯಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಪಹಾರಣೇ.


ತಾತ O dear, ಅಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾ by one who is capable of doing difficult deeds, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಮೇ my, ಆರಕ್ಷಃ sentinel, ಹತಃ is killed, ತತ್ it, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಅವಧ್ಯಮ್ indestructible, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ Janasthana, ಯುಧಿ in war, ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ have been pulled down, ತಸ್ಯ ಮೇ by him, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಪಹಾರಣೇ to abduct his wife, ಸಾಚಿವ್ಯಮ್ ministerial help, ಕುರು do.

O dear, Rama who is capable of doing difficult deeds has killed my sentinels. The indestructible Janasthana has been routed in war. Could you help me in abudcting his wife ? (That is the only way to bring him to his knees).
ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರವಚಶ್ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಮಾರೀಚೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷3.31.41৷৷

ಆಖ್ಯಾತಾ ಕೇನ ಸೀತಾ ಸಾ ಮಿತ್ರರೂಪೇಣ ಶತ್ರುಣಾ.

ತ್ವಯಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಶಾರ್ದೂಲ ಕೋ ನ ನನ್ದತಿ ನನ್ದಿತಃ৷৷3.31.42৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರವಚಃ words of the demon king, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಮಾರೀಚಃ Maricha, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಮಿತ್ರರೂಪೇಣ prtending to be friend, ಶತ್ರುಣಾ by your enemy, ಕೇನ by whom, ಸಾ ಸೀತಾ about that Sita, ಆಖ್ಯಾತಾ is reported, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಶಾರ್ದೂಲ tiger among demons, ನನ್ದಿತಃ delighted by you, ಕಃ who, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ನ ನನ್ದತಿ not enjoy.

Having heard Ravana ,the king of demons, Maricha said these words: O king, who is that enemy of yours who, in the guise of a friend, has told you about Sita? Though obliged by you, who is he that is not happy with you, O tiger among demons?
ಸೀತಾಮಿಹಾನಯಸ್ವೇತಿ ಕೋ ಬ್ರವೀತಿ ಬ್ರವೀಹಿ ಮೇ.

ರಕ್ಷೋಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ ಕಶ್ಶೃಙ್ಗಂ ಛೇತ್ತುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷3.31.43৷৷


ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಇಹ here, ಆನಯಸ್ವ bring, ಇತಿ this, ಕಃ who, ಬ್ರವೀತಿ said, ಮೇ to me, ಬ್ರವೀಹಿ you tell, ಕಃ who, ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ every one's, ರಕ್ಷೋಲೋಕಸ್ಯ world of demons, ಶೃಙ್ಗಮ್ peak, ಛೇತ್ತುಮ್ to cut, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ desirous.

Tell me who asked you to bring Sita ? Who wishes to demolish the peak of the entire clan of demons ?
ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಯತಿ ಕಶ್ಚ ತ್ವಾಂ ಸ ಚ ಶತ್ರುರಸಂಶಯಃ.

ಅಶೀವಿಷಮುಖಾದ್ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಾಮುದ್ಧರ್ತುಂ ಚೇಚ್ಛತಿ ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷3.31.44৷৷


ಕಶ್ಚ who is he, ತ್ವಾಮ್ to you, ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಯತಿ he encourages, ಸ ಚ he, ಶತ್ರುಃ enemy, ಅಸಂಶಯಃ no doubt, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಅಶೀವಿಷಮುಖಾತ್ from the serpent's mouth, ದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಾಮ್ fangs, ಉದ್ಧರ್ತುಮ್ to pluck out, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ desires.

He who has encouraged you in this is your enemy, indeed. He wants you to pluck out the fangs from the serpent's mouth.
ಕರ್ಮಣಾ ಕೇನ ಕೇನಾಸಿ ಕಾಪಥಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿತಃ.

ಸುಖಸುಪ್ತಸ್ಯ ತೇ ರಾಜನ್ ಪ್ರಹೃತಂ ಕೇನ ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ৷৷3.31.45৷৷


ಕೇನ by whom, ಕೇನ by what, ಕರ್ಮಣಾ by action, ಕಾಪಥಮ್ an evil direction, ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿತಃ advised you, ಅಸಿ you are, ರಾಜನ್ O king!, ಸುಖಸುಪ್ತಸ್ಯ of a man sleeping comfortably, ತೇ to you, ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ ಕೇನ on your forehead by whom, ಪ್ರಹೃತಮ್ is hit.

By whose action have you been led into this wrong direction? Who has hit you on your forehead while you were sleeping comfortably?
ವಿಶುದ್ಧವಂಶಾಭಿಜನಾಗ್ರಹಸ್ತ ಸ್ತೇಜೋಮದಸ್ಸಂಸ್ಥಿತದೋರ್ವಿಷಾಣಃ.

ಉದೀಕ್ಷಿತುಂ ರಾವಣ ನೇಹ ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಸ ಸಂಯುಗೇ ರಾಘವಗನ್ಧಹಸ್ತೀ৷৷3.31.46৷৷


ರಾವಣ O Ravana, ವಿಶುದ್ಧವಂಶಾಭಿಜನಾಗ್ರಹಸ್ತಃ his pure pedigree is his trunk, ತೇಜೋಮದಃ his brilliance to his ichor, ಸಂಸ್ಥಿತದೋರ್ವಿಷಾಣಃ his well-built, strong arms are his tasks, ಸಃ that, ರಾಘವಗನ್ಧಹಸ್ತೀ intoxicated elephant named Rama, ಸಂಯುಗೇ in war, ಇಹ here, ನ ಯುಕ್ತಃ not possible, ಉದೀಕ್ಷಿತುಮ್ to look at Rama.

Rama is like a mighty tusker. His pure and high birth is his trunk. His well-built and strong arms are his tusks. His brilliance in his ichor. Nobody can face this intoxicated elephant in battle.
ಅಸೌ ರಣಾನ್ತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಸಂಧಿವಾಲೋ ವಿದಗ್ಧರಕ್ಷೋಮೃಗಹಾ ನೃಸಿಂಹಃ.

ಸುಪ್ತಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಬೋಧಯಿತುಂ ನ ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಶರಾಙ್ಗಪೂರ್ಣೋ ನಿಶಿತಾಸಿದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಃ৷৷3.31.47৷৷


ರಣಾನ್ತಃಸ್ಥಿತಿಸಂಧಿವಾಲಃ lion on war-front with its tail touching the waist when angry, ವಿದಗ್ಧರಕ್ಷೋಮೃಗಹಾ destroyer of the deer in the form of learned demons, ಶರಾಙ್ಗಪೂರ್ಣಃ having arrows as sharp nails all over the body, ನಿಶಿತಾಸಿದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಃ sharp fangs, ಸುಪ್ತಃ asleep, ಅಸೌ that Rama, ನೃಸಿಂಹಃ lion in the form of man, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಬೋಧಯಿತುಮ್ to awaken, ನ ಯುಕ್ತಃ not proper.

Rama is a lion in the form of man, a lion on war-front with its tail touching the waist when angry. This lion is deft in killing deer in the form of clever demons. His body is full of arrows. The sharp swords are his pointed teeth. It does not behove you to rouse such a lion who is asleep.
ಚಾಪಾಪಹಾರೇ ಭುಜವೇಗಪಙ್ಕೇ ಶರೋರ್ಮಿಮಾಲೇ ಸುಮಹಾಹವೌಘೇ.

ನ ರಾಮಪಾತಾಲಮುಖೇತಿಘೋರೇ ಪ್ರಸ್ಕನ್ದಿತುಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜ ಯುಕ್ತಮ್৷৷3.31.48৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜ O king of demons !, ಚಾಪಾಪಹಾರೇ steals his bow, ಭುಜವೇಗಪಙ್ಕೇ his mighty arms are whirlpools of mud, ಶರೋರ್ಮಿಮಾಲೇ his arrows are rows of waves, ಸುಮಹಾಹವೌಘೇ in the flow of the great war, ಅತಿಘೋರೇ fierce, ರಾಮಪಾತಾಲಮುಖೇ Rama is in the mouth of the netherworld, ಪ್ರಸ್ಕನ್ದಿತುಮ್ to leap into, ನ ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ not proper.

O king of demons ! it is not proper (for you) to jump into the extremely fierce mouth of the nether world known as Rama. Who can steal the bow from his mighty arms which are whirlpools of mud. His arrows are rows of waves in the flow of the great war.
ಪ್ರಸೀದ ಲಙ್ಕೇಶ್ವರ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರ ಲಙ್ಕಾಂ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನೋ ಭವ ಸಾಧು ಗಚ್ಛ.

ತ್ವಂ ಸ್ವೇಷು ದಾರೇಷು ರಮಸ್ವ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಸಭಾರ್ಯೋ ರಮತಾಂ ವನೇಷು৷৷3.31.49৷৷

O lord of Lanka, chief of the demons, be pleased to return to Lanka and enjoy yourself in the company of your wives. Let Rama enjoy with his wife in the forest.
