[ Akampana reaches Lanka -- reveals to Ravana about the happenings at Janasthana-- describes Rama's valour-- suggests to Ravana the strategy to win Rama through the abduction of Sita-- Ravana's visit to Maricha-- Maricha's advice to Ravana.]

tvaramāṇastatō gatvā janasthānādakampanaḥ.

praviśya laṅkāṅ vēgēna rāvaṇaṅ vākyamabravīt৷৷3.31.1৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, akampanaḥ Akampana, tvaramāṇaḥ hastened, janasthānāt from Janasthana, gatvā went, vēgēna hurriedly, laṅkām Lanka, praviśya entered, rāvaṇam Ravana, vākyam words, abravīt said.

Quickly did Akampana leave Janasthana, and quickly he entered Lanka. He said to Ravana:
janasthānasthitā rājanrākṣasā bahavō hatāḥ.

kharaśca nihatassaṅkhyē kathañcidahamāgataḥ৷৷3.31.2৷৷


rājan O king, janasthānasthitāḥ dwelling in Janasthana, bahavaḥ many, rākṣasāḥ demons, hatāḥ are killed, saṅkhyē in war, kharaśca Khara too, nihataḥ killed, aham I, kathañcit with much difficulty, āgataḥ came.

O king! many demons dwelling at Janasthana including Khara have been killed. I manged to escape with much difficulty.
ēvamuktō daśagrīvaḥ kruddha ssaṅraktalōcanaḥ.

akampanamuvācēdaṅ nirdahanniva cakṣuṣā৷৷3.31.3৷৷


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ been told, daśagrīvaḥ the ten-headed Ravana, kruddhaḥ angry, saṅraktalōcanaḥ with reddened eyes, cakṣuṣā by the eyes, nirdahanniva as if burning, akampanam to Akampana,
idam this, uvāca spoke.

When Akampana thus reported to the ten-headed Ravana, his eyes reddened with anger. He spoke to Akampana as if he was burning him with his eyes :
kēna ramyaṅ janasthānaṅ hataṅ mama parāsunā.

kō hi sarvēṣu lōkēṣu gatiṅ cādhigamiṣyati৷৷3.31.4৷৷


parāsunā whose life is in the enemy's hand , kēna by whom, mama my, ramyam beautiful, janasthānam Janasthnam, hatam destroyed, sarvēṣu all, lōkēṣu in the worlds, kaḥ who, gatim death, adhigamiṣyati will surely get.

He who has destroyed my beautiful Janasthana is sure to die. His life is under the control of others (his enemies). Where can he be(alive) in all the worlds?
na hi mē vipriyaṅ kṛtvā śakyaṅ maghavatā sukham.

prāptuṅ vaiśravaṇēnāpi na yamēna na viṣṇunā৷৷3.31.5৷৷


mē to me, vipriyam displeasure, kṛtvā having caused, maghavatā by Indra, sukham happily, prāptum to have, na śakyaṅ hi not possible, vaiśravaṇēnāpi or by Kubera (the god of wealth), na nor, yamēna by Yama, na or, viṣṇunā by Visnu, na or.

One who has caused displeasure to me cannot be happy, be it Indra or Kubera, or Yama or even Visnu.
kālasya cāpyahaṅ kālō dahēyamapi pāvakam.

mṛtyuṅ maraṇadharmēṇa saṅyōjayitumutsahē৷৷3.31.6৷৷


aham I, kālasya cāpi to Yama also, kālaḥ destroyer, pāvakamapi fire also, dahēyam I will burn, mṛtyum to Yama, maraṇadharmēṇa property of death, saṅyōjayitum unite with, utsahē I can do.

I am the destroyer of the destroyer (Yama). I can burn even that which burns (fire). I
can infuse Death with the characteristics of death itself.
dahēyamapi saṅkṛddhastējasā.dityapāvakau.

vātasya tarasā vēgaṅ nihantumahamutsahē৷৷3.31.7৷৷


saṅkruddhaḥ if I am angry, tējasā by my radiance, āditya Sun, pāvakau api even fire, dahēyam I can burn, tarasā instantly, vātasya wind's, vēgam speed, nihantum to arrest, aham I, utsahē effort.

If angry, I can burn the Sun and even fire with my radiance. I can arrest the speed of the wind instantly with my effort.
tathā kruddhaṅ daśagrīvaṅ kṛtāñjalirakampanaḥ.

bhayātsandigdhayā vācā rāvaṇaṅ yācatē.bhayam৷৷3.31.8৷৷


akampanaḥ Akampana, kṛtāñjaliḥ with folded palms, tathā likewise, kruddham angry, daśagrīvam Ravana, bhayāt out of fear, sandigdhayā hesitatengly, vācā speech, abhayam safety, yācatē sought.

Akampana, out of fear, implored the inflamed Ravana with folded hands and faltering voice to spare him.
daśagrīvō.bhayaṅ tasmai pradadau rakṣasāṅ varaḥ.

sa visrabdhō.bravīdvākyamasandigdhamakampanaḥ৷৷3.31.9৷৷


rakṣasām of demons, varaḥ best one, daśagrīvaḥ the ten-headed Ravana, tasmai to him, abhayam protection, pradadau offered, saḥ akampanaḥ that Akampana, visrabdhaḥ grateful, asandigdham without hesitation, vākyam these words, abravīt said.

The ten-headed Ravana, lord of the demons, assured safety to Akampana, who gratefully said these words without hesitation:
putrō daśarathasyāsti siṅhasaṅhananō yuvā.

rāmō nāma vṛṣaskandhō vṛttāyatamahābhujaḥ৷৷3.31.10৷৷


siṅhasaṅhananaḥ with the body like a lion's, yuvā youth, daśarathasya Dasaratha's, putraḥ son, vṛṣaskandhaḥ shoulders like a bull's, vṛttāyatamahābhujaḥ round and strong arms, rāmō nāma by name Rama, asti he is.

Dasaratha has a young son, by name, Rama. He has a body like a lion's. He has strong, round arms and his shoulders resemble those of a bull.
vīraḥ pṛthuyaśāśśrīmānatulyabalavikramaḥ.

hataṅ tēna janasthānaṅ kharaśca saha dūṣaṇaḥ৷৷3.31.11৷৷


vīraḥ hero, pṛthuyaśāḥ of great fame, atulyabalavikramaḥ a man of unequal prowess, tē your, janasthānam Janasthanam, hatam destroyed, sahadūṣaṇaḥ along with Dusana, kharaśca Khara too.

He is a hero of great fame and unequal prowess. He has destroyed your Janasthana and also Khara along with Dusana.
akampanavaca śrutvā rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ.

nāgēndra iva niśvasya vacanaṅ cēdamabravīt৷৷3.31.12৷৷


rākṣasādhipaḥ lord of the demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, akampanavacaḥ Akampana's words, śrutvāḥ having heard, nāgēndraḥ iva like the king of serpents, niśvasya after sighing heavily, idam these, vacanaṅ ca words too, abravīt said.

Having heard Akampana's words, Ravana, the lord of demons, sighed heavily like the king of serpents and said these words:
sa surēndrēṇa saṅyuktō rāmassarvāmaraissaha.

upayātō janasthānaṅ brūhi kaccidakampana৷৷3.31.13৷৷


akampana Akampana, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, surēndrēṇa by Indra, sarvāmaraissaha along with all deities, saṅyuktaḥ is united, janasthānam to Janasthana, upayātaḥ kaccit came perhaps, brūhi tell?

Did Rama come to Janasthana with Indra and the gods ? O Akampana ! speak.
rāvaṇasya punarvākyaṅ niśamya tadakampanaḥ.

ācacakṣē balaṅ tasya vikramaṅ ca mahātmanaḥ৷৷3.31.14৷৷


rāvaṇasya Ravana's, tat that, vākyam words, niśamya heard, mahātmanaḥ of the great Rama, tasya his, balam strength, vikramaṅ ca exploits, punaḥ again, acacakṣē started telling.

Hearing Ravana's words, Akampana continued telling about great Rama's strength and his exploits in war.
rāmō nāma mahātējā śrēṣṭhassarvadhanuṣmatām.

divyāstraguṇasampannaḥ purandarasamō yudhi৷৷3.31.15৷৷


rāmō nāma Rama by name, mahātējāḥ very radiant, sarvadhanuṣmatām among all the archers, śrēṣṭhaḥ best , divyāstra guṇasampannaḥ owner of divine weapons, yudhi in war, purandarasamaḥ like Indra.

Rama is his name. He looks very radiant. He is the best among the archers. Owner of divine weapons, he is comparable to Indra in war.
tasyānurūpō balavānraktākṣō dandubhisvanaḥ.

kanīyānlakṣmaṇō nāma bhrātā śaśinibhānanaḥ৷৷3.31.16৷৷


balavān strong, raktākṣaḥ of bright red eyes, dundubhisvanaḥ deep resonance of a drum, śaśinibhānanaḥ face like the Moon, lakṣmaṇō nāma Lakshmana by name, tasya his, anurūpaḥ similar in appearance, kanīyān younger, bhrātā brother.

He is strong with bright red eyes. He has a deep voice with the resonance of a drum.
His face is like the moon. Lakshmana, his younger brother, is similar to him in appearance.
sa tēna saha saṅyuktaḥ pāvakēnānilō yathā.

śrīmānrājavarastēna janasthānaṅ nipātitam৷৷3.31.17৷৷


śrīmān prosperous , rājavaraḥ best among kings, saḥ he, anilaḥ wind, pāvakēna yathā like with fire, tēna saha along with him, saṅyuktaḥ united with, tēna by him, janasthānam Janasthana, nipātitam is pulled down.

Rama is prosperous. He is the best among kings. Lakshmana with him is like wind with fire. Rama has pulled down Janasthana.
naiva dēvā mahātmānō nātra kāryā vicāraṇā.

śarā rāmēṇa tūtsṛṣṭā rukmapuṅkhāḥ patatriṇaḥ৷৷3.31.18৷৷

sarpāḥ pañcānanā bhūtvā bhakṣayanti sma rākṣasān.


mahātmānaḥ great people, dēvāḥ gods, naiva not, atra here, vicāraṇā investigate , na kāryam not to be done, rāmēṇa by Rama, utsṛṣṭā released, rukmapuṅkhāḥ golden-feathered, patatriṇaḥ arrows, śarāḥ darts, pañcānanāḥ five-hooded, sarpāḥ serpents, bhūtvā turned into, rākṣasān demons, bhakṣayanti sma consumed.

Indeed, they are great men. No god came there (to lend him a hand). There is no need to investigate further about it. The golden-feathered arrows released by Rama turned into five-hooded serpents and consumed the demons.
yēna yēna ca gacchanti rākṣasā bhayakarśitāḥ.3.31.19৷৷

tēna tēna sma paśyanti rāmamēvāgrataḥ sthitam.

itthaṅ vināśitaṅ tēna janasthānaṅ tavānagha৷৷3.31.20৷৷


bhayakarśitāḥ gripped by fear, rākṣasāḥ demons, yēna yēna by whichever (path), gacchanti went, tēna tēna by the same way, agrataḥ in front of them, sthitam stationed, rāmamēva only Rama, paśyanti sma they saw, anagha O Sinless Sire!, tēna by him, tava your, janasthānam Janasthana, ittham in this manner, vināśitam destroyed.

Wherever the demons went they, gripped by fear, only saw Rama in front. O sinless sire! In this manner your Janasthana was destroyed by him.
akampanavacaśrutvā rāvaṇō vākyamabravīt.

janasthānaṅ gamiṣyāmi hantuṅ rāmaṅ salakṣmaṇam৷৷3.31.21৷৷


akampanavacaḥ Akampana's words, śrutvā hearing, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, vākyam words, abravīt said, salakṣmaṇam along with Lakshmana, rāmam Rama, hantum to kill, janasthānam to Janasthana, gamiṣyāmi will go.

Hearing Akampana's words, Ravana said, I will go to Janasthana and kill Rama along with Lakshmana.
athaivamuktē vacanē prōvācēdamakampanaḥ.

śṛṇu rājanyathāvṛttaṅ rāmasya balapauruṣam৷৷3.31.22৷৷


ēvam in that manner, vacanē in those words, uktē saying, akampanaḥ Akampana, idam thus, prōvāca spoke, rājan king, yathāvṛttam what happened, rāmasya Rama's, balapauruṣam strength and valour, śṛṇu listen.

Thus said by Ravana, Akampana responded, I will tell you what happened there. O king ! listen to the strength and valour of Rama.
asādhyaḥ kupitō rāmō vikramēṇa mahāyaśāḥ.

āpagāyāssupūrṇāyā vēgaṅ pariharēccharaiḥ৷৷3.31.23৷৷


mahāyaśāḥ man of great fame, rāmaḥ Rama, vikramēṇa in valour, asādhyaḥ irrepressible, kupitaḥ
when outraged, supūrṇāyāḥ in full spate, āpagāyāḥ of a river, vēgam speed, śaraiḥ with arrows, pariharēt he may arrest.

Rama is of great fame. When outraged, he is irrepressible. He can arrest with his arrows even the speed of a river (in spate).
satāragrahanakṣatraṅ nabhaścāpyavasādayēt.

asau rāmastu sīdantīṅ śrīmānabhyuddharēnmahīm৷৷3.31.24৷৷


śrīmān powerful, asau rāmastu this Rama, satāragrahanakṣatraṅ with planets and stars, nabhaḥ cāpi even the sky, avasādayēt can destroy, sīdantīm drowning in the sea, mahīm earth, abhyuddharēt can lift up.

Powerful Rama can pull down the sky along with the planets and stars. He can lift the drowning earth from the depth of the sea.
bhittvā vēlāṅ samudrasya lōkānāplāvayēdvibhuḥ.

vēgaṅ vāpi samudrasya vāyuṅ vā vidhamēccharaiḥ৷৷3.31.25৷৷


vibhuḥ overlord, samudrasya of the sea, vēlām boundary of the sea, bhittvā after breaking, lōkān worlds, āplāvayēt can drown, vēgaṅ vāpi also speed, vāyuṅ vā or wind, śaraiḥ by his arrows, vidhamēt arrest.

He is so very powerful that he can drown the earth by breaking the boundary of the sea. He can arrest the speed of the sea or of the wind with his arrows.
saṅhṛtya vā punarlōkānvikramēṇa mahāyaśāḥ.

śaktassapuruṣavyāghraḥ sraṣṭuṅ punarapi prajāḥ৷৷3.31.26৷৷


mahāyaśāḥ of great fame, saḥ he, puruṣavyāghraḥ tiger among men, punaḥ again, lōkān worlds, vikramēṇa by his valour, saṅhṛtya after destroying, prajāḥ creatures, punaḥapi again, sraṣṭum to create, śaktaḥ has the power.

He is a tiger among men. He is so powerful that he can destroy the world and recreate the creatures once again by his valour.
na hi rāmō daśagrīva śakyō jētuṅ tvayā yudhi.

rakṣasāṅ vāpi lōkēna svargaḥ pāpajanairiva৷৷3.31.27৷৷


daśagrīva O ten-headed one, rāmaḥ Rama, yudhi in war, tvayā by you, rakṣasām of demons, lōkēna by the world, vāpi or ever, jētum to win, svargaḥ heaven, pāpajanairiva by sinners, na śakyaḥ not possible.

O ten-headed one, just as it is not possible for sinners to attain heaven it is not possible for you or for the entire world of demons to win him in war
na taṅ vadhyamahaṅ manyē sarvairdēvāsurairapi.

ayaṅ tasya vadhōpāyastanmamaikamanāśśṛṇu৷৷3.31.28৷৷


sarvaiḥ by all, dēvāsurairapi by gods and demons together, tam him, vadhyam victim, aham I, na manyē I do not think, tasya his, vadhōpāya: means to kill, ayam this, tat that, mama from me, ēkamanāḥ single-minded attention, śṛṇu listen.

I do not think it is possible for gods and demons together to kill him, yet there is a way for his destruction. You may listen to me with single minded-attention:
bhāryā tasyōttamā lōkē sītā nāma sumadhyamā.

śyāmā samavibhaktāṅgī strīratnaṅ ratnabhūṣitā৷৷3.31.29৷৷


lōkē in the world, uttamā foremost, śyāmā beautiful woman, samavibhaktāṅgī woman of well-formed limbs, strīratnaṅ jewel among women, ratnabhūṣitā adorned with gems, sītā nāma Sita by name, sumadhyamā of slender waist, tasya his, bhāryā wife.

Rama has a wife in this world, by name, Sita, who is beautiful, has a slender waist
and a well-formed body. Adorned with gems, she is a jewel among women,
naiva dēvī na gandharvī nāpsarā nāpi dānavī.

tulyā sīmantinī tasyā mānuṣīṣu kutō bhavēt৷৷3.31.30৷৷


tasyāḥ for her, tulyā equal, sīmantinī woman, dēvī a goddess, naiva not there, gandharvī gandharvi, na not, apsarāḥ apsara, na not, dānavī api among demonesses, na not there, mānuṣīṣu among humans, kutaḥ how can, bhavēt she be.

She has no equal among goddesses nor among gandharvis nor apasaras nor among demonesses. How can there be a peer of her among human beings ?
tasyāpahara bhāryāṅtvaṅ pramathya tu mahāvanē.

sītayā rahitaḥ kāmī rāmō hāsyati jīvitam৷৷3.31.31৷৷


tvam you, mahāvanē in the great forest, pramathya forcefully, tasya his, bhāryām wife, apahara you may abduct, kāmī passionate, rāmaḥ Rama, sītayā by Sita, rahitaḥ separated from, jīvitam life, hāsyati will give up.

Abduct Rama's wife by force in that great forest and bereft of Sita, he will give up his life.
arōcayata tadvākyaṅ rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ.

cintayitvā mahābāhurakampanamuvāca ha৷৷3.31.32৷৷


rākṣasādhipaḥ king of demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tat vākyam those words, arōcayata relished, mahābāhuḥ of strong arms, cintayitvā pondering over, akampanam to Akampana, uvāca ha said.

Ravana, the strong-armed king of demons, relished the words of Akampana and pondering over the matter, said to him :
bāḍhaṅ kālyaṅ gamiṣyāmi hyēkassārathinā saha.

ānayiṣyāmi vaidēhīmimāṅ hṛṣṭō mahāpurīm৷৷3.31.33৷৷


bāḍham surely, kālyam early in the morning, ēkaḥ alone, sārathinā saha along with charioteer, gamiṣyāmi will go, hṛṣṭaḥ gladly, vaidēhīm to Vaidehi, imāṅ (mahā)purīm to this city, ānayiṣyāmi will bring.

Yes, early in the morning I will go alone gladly with the charioteer and bring Vaidehi here to this great city.
athaivamuktvā prayayau kharayuktēna rāvaṇaḥ.

rathēnādityavarṇēna diśassarvāḥ prakāśayan৷৷3.31.34৷৷


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, ēvam so, uktvā having said, atha then, kharayuktēna yoked with donkeys, ādityavarṇēna resembling the colour of the Sun, rathēna by chariot, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, prakāśayan illuminating, prayayau left.

Having said so, Ravana got on a chariot yoked with donkeys. It had the colour of the Sun. It illuminated all directions. Ravana left.
sa rathō rākṣasēndrasya nakṣatrapathagō mahān.

sañcāryamāṇaśśuśubhē jaladē candramā iva৷৷3.31.35৷৷


rākṣasēndrasya of the king of demons, sañcāryamāṇaḥ as he was going, nakṣatrapathagaḥ in the sky, mahān great, saḥ he, rathaḥ chariot, jaladē in the clouds, candramāḥ iva like the Moon, śuśubhē shone.

The great chariot of the demon king (Ravana) flying in the sky shone like the Moon in the cloud.
sa mārīcāśramaṅ prāpya tāṭakēyamupāgamat.

mārīcēnārcitō rājā bhakṣyabhōjyairamānuṣaiḥ৷৷3.31.36৷৷


saḥ he, mārīcāśramam hermitage of Maricha, prāpya entering, tāṭakēyam the son of Tataka, upāgamat reached, rājā king, amānuṣaiḥ unfit for human consumption, bhakṣyabhōjyaiḥ food to be chewed and to be eaten, mārīcēna by Maricha, arcita: offered.

Ravana reached the hermitage of Maricha and met him who was the son of Tataka. The demon king was treated with food that can be chewed and food that can be eaten.
taṅ svayaṅ pūjayitvā tu āsanēnōdakēna ca.

arthōpahitayā vācā mārīcō vākyamabravīt৷৷3.31.37৷৷


mārīcaḥ Maricha, tam to him, āsanēna by offering a seat, udakēna ca and water, svayam himself, pūjayitvā after offering obeisance, arthōpahitayā in a meaningful manner, vācā with words, vākyam words, abravīt said.

Maricha personally offered Ravana a seat. He offered him water and paid him obeisance. Making meaningful enquiries he said in appropriate words :
kaccitsukuśalaṅ rājanlōkānāṅ rākṣasēśvara.

āśaṅkē nātha jānē tvaṅ yatastūrṇamihāgataḥ৷৷3.31.38৷৷


rākṣasēśvara O lord of demons ! rājan king, lōkānām of the world, sukuśalaṅ kaccit hope every one is fine, nātha O lord, yataḥ since, tvam you, tūrṇam so quickly, iha here, āgataḥ have come, āśaṅkē doubt, jānē know.

O lord of demons ! O king! hope every one is fine in the world of demons. O lord, (though) your sudden arrival puts me in doubt (about everything going right).
ēvamuktō mahātējā mārīcēna sa rāvaṇaḥ.

tataḥ paścādidaṅ vākyamabravīdvākyakōvidaḥ৷৷3.31.39৷৷


mārīcēna by Maricha, ēvam in this way, uktaḥ having spoken, mahātējāḥ glorious, vākyakōvidaḥ one who is eloquent in speech, saḥ he, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tataḥ then, paścāt later, idam these, vākyam words, abravīt spoke.

Having thus been asked by Maricha, glorious Ravana, who was eloquent in speech, spoke to him :
ārakṣō mē hatastāta rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā.

janasthānamavadhya tatsarvaṅ yudhi nipātitam৷৷3.31.40৷৷

tasya mē kuru sācivyaṅ tasya bhāryāpahāraṇē.


tāta O dear, akliṣṭakarmaṇā by one who is capable of doing difficult deeds, rāmēṇa by Rama, mē my, ārakṣaḥ sentinel, hataḥ is killed, tat it, sarvam all, avadhyam indestructible, janasthānam Janasthana, yudhi in war, nipātitam have been pulled down, tasya mē by him, tasya his, bhāryāpahāraṇē to abduct his wife, sācivyam ministerial help, kuru do.

O dear, Rama who is capable of doing difficult deeds has killed my sentinels. The indestructible Janasthana has been routed in war. Could you help me in abudcting his wife ? (That is the only way to bring him to his knees).
rākṣasēndravacaśśrutvā mārīcō vākyamabravīt৷৷3.31.41৷৷

ākhyātā kēna sītā sā mitrarūpēṇa śatruṇā.

tvayā rākṣasaśārdūla kō na nandati nanditaḥ৷৷3.31.42৷৷


rākṣasēndravacaḥ words of the demon king, śrutvā having heard, mārīcaḥ Maricha, vākyam these words, abravīt said, mitrarūpēṇa prtending to be friend, śatruṇā by your enemy, kēna by whom, sā sītā about that Sita, ākhyātā is reported, rākṣasaśārdūla tiger among demons, nanditaḥ delighted by you, kaḥ who, tvayā by you, na nandati not enjoy.

Having heard Ravana ,the king of demons, Maricha said these words: O king, who is that enemy of yours who, in the guise of a friend, has told you about Sita? Though obliged by you, who is he that is not happy with you, O tiger among demons?
sītāmihānayasvēti kō bravīti bravīhi mē.

rakṣōlōkasya sarvasya kaśśṛṅgaṅ chēttumicchati৷৷3.31.43৷৷


sītām Sita, iha here, ānayasva bring, iti this, kaḥ who, bravīti said, mē to me, bravīhi you tell, kaḥ who, sarvasya every one's, rakṣōlōkasya world of demons, śṛṅgam peak, chēttum to cut, icchati desirous.

Tell me who asked you to bring Sita ? Who wishes to demolish the peak of the entire clan of demons ?
prōtsāhayati kaśca tvāṅ sa ca śatrurasaṅśayaḥ.

aśīviṣamukhāddaṅṣṭrāmuddhartuṅ cēcchati tvayā৷৷3.31.44৷৷


kaśca who is he, tvām to you, prōtsāhayati he encourages, sa ca he, śatruḥ enemy, asaṅśayaḥ no doubt, tvayā by you, aśīviṣamukhāt from the serpent's mouth, daṅṣṭrām fangs, uddhartum to pluck out, icchati desires.

He who has encouraged you in this is your enemy, indeed. He wants you to pluck out the fangs from the serpent's mouth.
karmaṇā kēna kēnāsi kāpathaṅ pratipāditaḥ.

sukhasuptasya tē rājan prahṛtaṅ kēna mūrdhani৷৷3.31.45৷৷


kēna by whom, kēna by what, karmaṇā by action, kāpatham an evil direction, pratipāditaḥ advised you, asi you are, rājan O king!, sukhasuptasya of a man sleeping comfortably, tē to you, mūrdhani kēna on your forehead by whom, prahṛtam is hit.

By whose action have you been led into this wrong direction? Who has hit you on your forehead while you were sleeping comfortably?
viśuddhavaṅśābhijanāgrahasta stējōmadassaṅsthitadōrviṣāṇaḥ.

udīkṣituṅ rāvaṇa nēha yuktaḥ sa saṅyugē rāghavagandhahastī৷৷3.31.46৷৷


rāvaṇa O Ravana, viśuddhavaṅśābhijanāgrahastaḥ his pure pedigree is his trunk, tējōmadaḥ his brilliance to his ichor, saṅsthitadōrviṣāṇaḥ his well-built, strong arms are his tasks, saḥ that, rāghavagandhahastī intoxicated elephant named Rama, saṅyugē in war, iha here, na yuktaḥ not possible, udīkṣitum to look at Rama.

Rama is like a mighty tusker. His pure and high birth is his trunk. His well-built and strong arms are his tusks. His brilliance in his ichor. Nobody can face this intoxicated elephant in battle.
asau raṇāntaḥ sthitisaṅdhivālō vidagdharakṣōmṛgahā nṛsiṅhaḥ.

suptastvayā bōdhayituṅ na yuktaḥ śarāṅgapūrṇō niśitāsidaṅṣṭraḥ৷৷3.31.47৷৷


raṇāntaḥsthitisaṅdhivālaḥ lion on war-front with its tail touching the waist when angry, vidagdharakṣōmṛgahā destroyer of the deer in the form of learned demons, śarāṅgapūrṇaḥ having arrows as sharp nails all over the body, niśitāsidaṅṣṭraḥ sharp fangs, suptaḥ asleep, asau that Rama, nṛsiṅhaḥ lion in the form of man, tvayā by you, bōdhayitum to awaken, na yuktaḥ not proper.

Rama is a lion in the form of man, a lion on war-front with its tail touching the waist when angry. This lion is deft in killing deer in the form of clever demons. His body is full of arrows. The sharp swords are his pointed teeth. It does not behove you to rouse such a lion who is asleep.
cāpāpahārē bhujavēgapaṅkē śarōrmimālē sumahāhavaughē.

na rāmapātālamukhē.tighōrē praskandituṅ rākṣasarāja yuktam৷৷3.31.48৷৷


rākṣasarāja O king of demons !, cāpāpahārē steals his bow, bhujavēgapaṅkē his mighty arms are whirlpools of mud, śarōrmimālē his arrows are rows of waves, sumahāhavaughē in the flow of the great war, atighōrē fierce, rāmapātālamukhē Rama is in the mouth of the netherworld, praskanditum to leap into, na yuktam not proper.

O king of demons ! it is not proper (for you) to jump into the extremely fierce mouth of the nether world known as Rama. Who can steal the bow from his mighty arms which are whirlpools of mud. His arrows are rows of waves in the flow of the great war.
prasīda laṅkēśvara rākṣasēndra laṅkāṅ prasannō bhava sādhu gaccha.

tvaṅ svēṣu dārēṣu ramasva nityaṅ rāmassabhāryō ramatāṅ vanēṣu৷৷3.31.49৷৷


laṅkēśvara O lord of Lanka, rākṣasēndra chief of demons, prasīda be pleased, sādhu it is proper, laṅkām to Lanka, gaccha may go, prasannaḥ be pleased, bhava be, tvam you, nityam always, svēṣu your own, dārēṣu by wives, ramasva enjoy, rāmaḥ Rama, sabhāryaḥ with his wife, vanēṣu in the forest, ramatām may enjoy.

O lord of Lanka, chief of the demons, be pleased to return to Lanka and enjoy yourself in the company of your wives. Let Rama enjoy with his wife in the forest.
ēvamuktō daśagrīvō mārīcēna sa rāvaṇaḥ.

nyavartata purīṅ laṅkāṅ vivēśa ca gṛhōttamam৷৷3.31.50৷৷


mārīcēna by Maricha, ēvam thus, uktaḥ advised, daśagrīvaḥ the ten- headed demon, saḥ rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, laṅkāṅ purīm to the city of Lanka, nyavartata returned, gṛhōttamam best of homes, vivēśa ca entered.

Thus advised by Maricha ,the ten- headed Ravana returned and entered his best of homes in the city of Lanka .
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē ēkatriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyfirst sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
