Sloka & Translation

[Surpanakha describes Rama and Sita to Ravana--incites him to abduct Sita and make her his wife.]

ತತಶ್ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಬ್ರುವನ್ತೀಂ ಪರುಷಂ ವಚಃ.

ಅಮಾತ್ಯಮಧ್ಯೇ ಸಙ್ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ ಪರಿಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ರಾವಣಃ৷৷3.34.1৷৷

ತತಃ then, ಅಮಾತ್ಯಮಧ್ಯೇ in the midst of ministers, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh, ವಚಃ words, ಬ್ರುವನ್ತೀಮ್ while speaking, ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾಮ್ to Surpanakha, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ಸಙ್ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ enraged, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ಪರಿಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ asked.

Incensed at the harsh words Surpanakha used in the midst of ministers, Ravana said:

ಕಶ್ಚ ರಾಮಃ ಕಥಂವೀರ್ಯಃ ಕಿಂರೂಪಃ ಕಿಂಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಸ್ಸುದುರಾಸದಮ್৷৷3.34.2৷৷

ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಕಃ who is he, ಕಥಂವೀರ್ಯಃ what is his strength?, ಕಿಂರೂಪಃ how does he look, ಕಿಂಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ how valiant, ಸುದುರಾಸದಮ್ impenetrable, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ Dandaka forest, ಕಿಮರ್ಥಮ್ for what purpose?, ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಃ he entered.

Who is Rama? What is his strength? How does he look? How valiant is he? For what purpose has he entered the impenetrable Dandaka forest?

ಆಯುಧಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ನಿಹತಾ ಯೇನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ.

ಖರಶ್ಚ ನಿಹತಸ್ಸಂಖ್ಯೇ ದೂಷಣಸ್ತ್ರಿಶಿರಾಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷3.34.3৷৷

ಯೇನ by what, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ demons, ಖರಶ್ಚ and Khara, ದೂಷಣಃ Dusana, ತಥಾ likewise, ತ್ರಿಶಿರಾಃ Thrisira, ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯೇ in war, ನಿಹತಾಃ killed, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಆಯುಧಮ್ weapon, ಕಿಮ್ what.

With what weapons he has killed demons like Khara, Dusana and Trisira ?

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಕ್ರೋಧಮೂರ್ಛಿತಾ.

ತತೋ ರಾಮಂ ಯಥಾತತ್ವಮಾಖ್ಯಾತುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷3.34.4৷৷

ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by the king of demons, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾ spoken, ಕ್ರೋಧಮೂರ್ಛಿತಾ overtaken by anger, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ the demoness ತತಃ then, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಯಥಾತತ್ವಮ್ faithfully, ಆಖ್ಯಾತುಮ್ to describe, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ she started.

Thus questioned by Ravana, the demoness, overcome by anger, began telling him about Rama faithfully:

ದೀರ್ಘಬಾಹುರ್ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷ ಶ್ಚೀರಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಾಮ್ಬರಃ.

ಕನ್ದರ್ಪಸಮರೂಪಶ್ಚ ರಾಮೋ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ৷৷3.34.5৷৷

ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ Dasaratha's son, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ದೀರ್ಘಬಾಹುಃ long- armed, ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಃ large- eyed, ಚೀರಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಾಮ್ಬರಃ clad in deer skin and bark , ಕನ್ದರ್ಪಸಮರೂಪಶ್ಚ resembled Cupid৷৷

Rama, Dasaratha's son, has long arms, large eyes. He is clad in deer-skin and bark. He resembles Cupid.

ಶಕ್ರಚಾಪನಿಭಂ ಚಾಪಂ ವಿಕೃಷ್ಯ ಕನಕಾಙ್ಗದಮ್.

ದೀಪ್ತಾನ್ ಕ್ಷಿಪತಿ ನಾರಾಚಾನ್ಸರ್ಪಾನಿವ ಮಹಾವಿಷಾನ್৷৷3.34.6৷৷

ಶಕ್ರಚಾಪನಿಭಮ್ bow like Indra's, ಕನಕಾಙ್ಗದಮ್ gold armlets, ಚಾಪಮ್ bow, ವಿಕೃಷ್ಯ draws, ಮಹಾವಿಷಾನ್ highly poisonous, ಸರ್ಪಾನಿವ snake like, ದೀಪ್ತಾನ್ glittering, ನಾರಾಚಾನ್ iron arrows, ಕ್ಷಿಪತಿ releases.

His bow resembles Indra's, He is adorned with gold bands. Drawing the bow, he releases glittering arrows like highly poisonous snakes.

ನಾದದಾನಂ ಶರಾನ್ಘೋರಾನ್ನಮುಞ್ಚನ್ತಂ ಶಿಲೀಮುಖಾನ್.

ನ ಕಾರ್ಮುಕಂ ವಿಕರ್ಷನ್ತಂ ರಾಮಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸಂಯುಗೇ৷৷3.34.7৷৷

ಸಂಯುಗೇ in war, ಘೋರಾನ್ dreadful, ಶರಾನ್ arrows, ಆದದಾನಮ್ drawing from the quiver, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see, ಶಿಲೀಮುಖಾನ್ darts, ಮುಞ್ಚನ್ತಮ್ released, ನ not, ಕಾರ್ಮುಕಮ್ a bow, ವಿಕರ್ಷನ್ತಮ್ pulling apart, ನ not.

I could not see Rama in the dreadful war while he was pulling an arrow from the quiver, aiming the dart, and drawing the bow-string.

ಹನ್ಯಮಾನಂ ತು ತತ್ಸೈನ್ಯಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಶರವೃಷ್ಟಿಭಿಃ.

ಇನ್ದ್ರೇಣೇವೋತ್ತಮಂ ಸಸ್ಯಮಾಹತನ್ತ್ವಶ್ಮವೃಷ್ಟಿಭಿಃ৷৷3.34.8৷৷

ಇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by Indra, ಅಶ್ಮವೃಷ್ಟಿಭಿಃ by raining hailstones, ಆಹತಮ್ destroyed, ಉತ್ತಮಂ ಸಸ್ಯಮಿವ like the crop ready for harvest, ಶರವೃಷ್ಟಿಭಿಃ rain of arrows, ಹನ್ಯಮಾನಮ್ killed, ತತ್ ಸೈನ್ಯಮ್ that army, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ witnessed.

Just as Indra destroys the crop ready for harvest by raining hailstones, I have seen Rama killing the army with a shower of arrows.

ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ಭೀಮರೂಪಾಣಾಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಚತುರ್ದಶ.

ನಿಹತಾನಿ ಶರೈ ಸ್ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೈಸ್ತೇನೈಕೇನ ಪದಾತಿನಾ৷৷3.34.9৷৷

ಅರ್ಧಾಧಿಕಮುಹೂರ್ತೇನ ಖರಶ್ಚ ಸಹದೂಷಣಃ.

ಪದಾತಿನಾ on foot, ಏಕೇನ alone, ತೇನ by him, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೈಃ sharp, ಶರೈಃ arows, ಅರ್ಧಾಧಿಕಮುಹೂರ್ತೇನ within the span of one and a half muhurta ( muhurtha is fortyeight minutes), ಭೀಮರೂಪಾಣಾಮ್ dreadful in appearance, ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ demons, ಚತುರ್ದಶ fourteen, ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ thousand, ನಿಹತಾನಿ are killed, ಸಹದೂಷಣಃ also Dusana, ಖರಶ್ಚ and Khara.

Fighting alone on foot with his sharp arrows Rama killed within a span of one and a half muhurta, the fourteen thousand dreadful demons including Dusana and Khara.

ಋಷೀಣಾಮಭಯಂ ದತ್ತಂ ಕೃತಕ್ಷೇಮಾಶ್ಚ ದಣ್ಡಕಾಃ৷৷3.34.10৷৷

ಏಕಾ ಕಥಞ್ಚಿನ್ಮುಕ್ತಾಹಂ ಪರಿಭೂಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಸ್ತ್ರೀವಧಂ ಶಙ್ಕಮಾನೇನ ರಾಮೇಣ ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನಾ৷৷3.34.11৷৷

ಋಷೀಣಾಮ್ for seers, ಅಭಯಮ್ assurance of safety, ದತ್ತಮ್ is given, ದಣ್ಡಕಾಃ Dandaka forest, ಕೃತಕ್ಷೇಮಾಶ್ಚ peace restored, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ great soul, ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನಾ knower of self, ಸ್ತ್ರೀವಧಮ್ slaying a woman, ಶಙ್ಕಮಾನೇನ hesitant of, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಏಕಾ only, ಪರಿಭೂಯ insulted, ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ somehow, ಮುಕ್ತಾ left with life.

Sages have been assured safety. Peace has been restored to Dandaka forest. As Rama, the great soul, who knows the self, hesitated to kill a woman, I was alone saved after this humiliation.

ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಚಾಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಗುಣತಸ್ತುಲ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಃ.

ಅನುರಕ್ತಶ್ಚ ಭಕ್ತಶ್ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್৷৷3.34.12৷৷

ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ radiant , ಗುಣತಃ in quality, ತುಲ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಃ of equal courage, ಅನುರಕ್ತಶ್ಚ very loyal, ಭಕ್ತಶ್ಚ devoted, ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ valiant, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ನಾಮ Lakshmana by name, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother.

His brother called Lakshmana looks radiant. He is virtuous and courageous like him, valiant, devoted and loyal.

ಅಮರ್ಷೀ ದುರ್ಜಯೋ ಜೇತಾ ವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತೋ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ಬಲೀ.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ದಕ್ಷಿಣೋ ಬಾಹುರ್ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಾಣೋ ಬಹಿಶ್ಚರಃ৷৷3.34.13৷৷

ಅಮರ್ಷೀ impatient , ದುರ್ಜಯಃ invincible, ಜೇತಾ victorious, ವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಃ very bold, ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ intelligent, ಬಲೀ strong, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ ಬಾಹುಃ right hand, ಬಹಿಶ್ಚರಃ moving outside, ಪ್ರಾಣಃ his own life.

He is impatient, invincible, victorious, bold, intelligent and strong. He is even the right hand of Rama, his outer life.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ತು ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೀ ಪೂರ್ಣೇನ್ದುಸದೃಶಾನನಾ.

ಧರ್ಮಪತ್ನೀ ಪ್ರಿಯಾ ಭರ್ತುರ್ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತೇ ರತಾ৷৷3.34.14৷৷

ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೀ large- eyed lady, ಪೂರ್ಣೇನ್ದುಸದೃಶಾನನಾ face like the full moon, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಧರ್ಮಪತ್ನೀ consort, ಭರ್ತುಃ husband's, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಃ darling, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಪ್ರಿಯಹಿತೇ in the interest of her husband, ರತಾ engaged.

Rama's beloved consort is a large-eyed lady. Her face is like the full moon. She is engaged in the well-being of her husband.

ಸಾ ಸುಕೇಶೀ ಸುನಾಸೋರುಸ್ಸುರೂಪಾ ಚ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ದೇವತೇವ ವನಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ರಾಜತೇ ಶ್ರೀರಿವಾಪರಾ৷৷3.34.15৷৷

ಸುಕೇಶೀ she has long hair, ಸುನಾಸೋರುಃ has beautiful nose and thighs, ಸುರೂಪಾ ಚ of good look, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ illustrious lady, ಸಾ she, ಅಸ್ಯ of this, ವನಸ್ಯ of the forest, ದೇವತೇವ like the presiding deity, ಅಪರಾ another, ಶ್ರೀರಿವ like goddess of wealth, ರಾಜತೇ shining.

She is an illustrious lady. She is good-looking with her long hair, well-shaped nose and things. She appears to be the presiding deity of the forest, another goddess of wealth (Laxmi).

ತಪ್ತಕಾಞ್ಚನವರ್ಣಾಭಾ ರಕ್ತತುಙ್ಗನಖೀ ಶುಭಾ.

ಸೀತಾ ನಾಮ ವರಾರೋಹಾ ವೈದೇಹೀ ತನುಮಧ್ಯಮಾ৷৷3.34.16৷৷

ತಪ್ತಕಾಞ್ಚನವರ್ಣಾಭಾ a lady of shining golden hue, ರಕ್ತತುಙ್ಗನಖೀ of red, pointed nails, ಶುಭಾ auspicious, ವೈದೇಹೀ daughter of Videha, ತನುಮಧ್ಯಮಾ of slender waist, ಸೀತಾ ನಾಮ by name Sita, ವರಾರೋಹಾ of heavy hips.

She is Sita, princess of Videha, a virtuous lady of golden complexion, a beautiful lady of slender waist and heavy hips.

ನೈವ ದೇವೀ ನ ಗನ್ಧರ್ವೀ ನ ಯಕ್ಷೀ ನ ಚ ಕಿನ್ನರೀ.

ನೈವಂರೂಪಾ ಮಯಾ ನಾರೀ ದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಾ ಮಹೀತಲೇ৷৷3.34.17৷৷

ಏವಂರೂಪಾ such a beauty, ದೇವೀ goddess, ಮಯಾ myself, ನೈವ ದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಾ not seen earlier, ಗನ್ಧರ್ವೀ gandharvi, ನ not, ಯಕ್ಷೀ yakshi, ನ not, ಕಿನ್ನರೀ kinneri, ನ not, ನಾರೀ woman, ಮಹೀತಲೇ on this earth, ನ not.

I had not seen such a beautiful woman earlier, among the gandharvas, or yakshas, or kinneras. I have not seen such a beauty among the humans on earth.

ಯಸ್ಯ ಸೀತಾ ಭವೇದ್ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಯಂ ಚ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜೇತ್.

ಅತಿಜೀವೇತ್ಸ ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಲೋಕೇಷ್ವಪಿ ಪುರನ್ದರಾತ್৷৷3.34.18৷৷

ಯಸ್ಯ whose, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ as wife, ಭವೇತ್ shall be, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ happily, ಯಮ್ whom ever, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜೇತ್ she may embrace, ಸಃ he, ಸರ್ವೇಷು in all, ಲೋಕೇಷು in the worlds, ಪುರನ್ದರಾತ್ ಅಪಿ more than Indra, the breaker of fortress, ಅತಿಜೀವೇತ್ may wish to live long.

Whosoever gets Sita as his wife, whoever she embraces happily will wish to live longer than Indra, the breaker of fortresses in this world.

ಸಾ ಸುಶೀಲಾ ವಪುಶ್ಶ್ಲಾಘ್ಯಾ ರೂಪೇಣಾಪ್ರತಿಮಾ ಭುವಿ.

ತವಾನುರೂಪಾ ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ತ್ವಂ ಚ ತಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತಥಾ ಪತಿಃ৷৷3.34.19৷৷

ಸುಶೀಲಾ a woman of good conduct, ವಪುಶ್ಲಾಘ್ಯಾ is a woman of praiseworthy beauty, ರೂಪೇಣ by appearance, ಭುವಿ on this earth, ಅಪ್ರತಿಮಾ incomparable, ಸಾ Sita, ತವ your, ಅನುರೂಪಾ suitable for you, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife, ಸ್ಯಾತ್ will be, ತಥಾ similarly, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ to her, ಪತಿಃ suitable husband.

She is a woman of good conduct, of praiseworthy beauty. She is matchless in her beauty on earth. She will be a suitable wife for you and you, a suitable husband for her.

ತಾಂ ತು ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಜಘನಾಂ ಪೀನಶ್ರೋಣಿಪಯೋಧರಾಮ್.

ಭಾರ್ಯಾರ್ಥೇ ಚ ತವಾನೇತುಮುದ್ಯತಾಹಂ ವರಾನನಾಮ್৷৷3.34.20৷৷

ವಿರೂಪಿತಾಸ್ಮಿ ಕ್ರೂರೇಣ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಮಹಾಭುಜ.

ಮಹಾಭುಜ O mighty-armed one, ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಜಘನಾಮ್ of broad thighs, ಪೀನಶ್ರೋಣಿಪಯೋಧರಾಮ್ a lady of pointed breasts and high hips, ತಾಂ ವರಾನನಾಮ್ of beautiful face, ತವ your, ಭಾರ್ಯಾರ್ಥೇ as your wife to be, ಆನೇತುಮ್ to bring, ಉದ್ಯತಾ I have tried, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕ್ರೂರೇಣ by the cruel, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ by Lakshmana, ವಿರೂಪಿತಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ have been disfigured.

O mighty-armed one ! I have been disfigured by cruel Lakshmana as I was attempting to bring that lady of broad thighs, pointed breasts, heavy hips and a beautiful face to make her your wife.

ತಾಂ ತು ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾದ್ಯ ವೈದೇಹೀಂ ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಾಮ್.

ಮನ್ಮಥಸ್ಯ ಶರಾಣಾಂ ವೈ ತ್ವಂ ವಿಧೇಯೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷3.34.21৷৷

ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರನಿಭಾನನಾಮ್ a lady with a face like the full Moon, ತಾಮ್ her, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ Vaidehi, ಅದ್ಯ now, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ by seeing, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮನ್ಮಥಸ್ಯ of Cupid, ಶರಾಣಾಮ್ arrows, ವಿಧೇಯಃ be a victim, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಸಿ will be.

If you see her today, this lady with a face like the fullmoon, you will (instantaneously) fall a victim to the arrows of the god of love.

ಯದಿ ತಸ್ಯಾಮಭಿಪ್ರಾಯೋ ಭಾರ್ಯಾರ್ಥೇ ತವ ಜಾಯತೇ.

ಶೀಘ್ರಮುದ್ಧ್ರಿಯತಾಂ ಪಾದೋ ಜಯಾರ್ಥಮಿಹ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ৷৷3.34.22৷৷

ತಸ್ಯಾಮ್ in her, ತವ your, ಭಾರ್ಯಾರ್ಥೇ desire to make her your wife, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಃ intention, ಜಾಯತೇ ಯದಿ if it arises, ಇಹ from here, ಜಯಾರ್ಥಮ್ to win her over, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ ಪಾದಃ your right foot, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಉದ್ಘ್ರಿಯತಾಮ್ may be raised.

If you intend her to be your wife, raise your right foot now and proceed to win her over.

ಕುರು ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ತಥಾ ತೇಷಾಂ ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರ.

ವಧಾತ್ತಸ್ಯ ನೃಶಂಸಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾಶ್ರಮವಾಸಿನಃ৷৷3.34.23৷৷

ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಶ್ವರ O lord of the demons ! ತಥಾ such, ನೃಶಂಸಸ್ಯ cruel ones, ಆಶ್ರಮವಾಸಿನಃ of the dweller of the hermitage, ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of that Rama, ವಧಾತ್ by killing, ತೇಷಾಮ್ of those, ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ of demons, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ favour, ಕುರು do.

O lord of the demons, do a favour to your clan by killing that cruel Rama dwelling in the hermitage.

ತಂ ಶರೈರ್ನಿಶಿತೈರ್ಹತ್ವಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ ಮಹಾರಥಮ್.

ಹತನಾಥಾಂ ಸುಖಂ ಸೀತಾಂ ಯಥಾವದುಪಭೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷3.34.24৷৷

ಮಹಾರಥಮ್ to that great warrior, ತಂ that, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ Lakshmana also, ನಿಶಿತೈಃ with sharp ones, ಶರೈಃ with arrows, ಹತ್ವಾ after killing, ಹತನಾಥಾಮ್ with her husband killed, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಸುಖಮ್ happily, ಯಥಾವತ್ as you like, ಉಪಭೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ you can enjoy.

Kill Rama, that great warrior along with Lakshmana with sharp arrows and enjoy the company of Sita happily as you like, with her husband dead.
