[Surpanakha describes Rama and Sita to Ravana--incites him to abduct Sita and make her his wife.]

തതശ്ശൂര്പണഖാം ദൃഷ്ട്വാ ബ്രുവന്തീം പരുഷം വചഃ.

അമാത്യമധ്യേ സങ്ക്രുദ്ധഃ പരിപപ്രച്ഛ രാവണഃ৷৷3.34.1৷৷

തതഃ then, അമാത്യമധ്യേ in the midst of ministers, പരുഷമ് harsh, വചഃ words, ബ്രുവന്തീമ് while speaking, ശൂര്പണഖാമ് to Surpanakha, ദൃഷ്ട്വാ after seeing, സങ്ക്രുദ്ധഃ enraged, രാവണഃ Ravana, പരിപപ്രച്ഛ asked.

Incensed at the harsh words Surpanakha used in the midst of ministers, Ravana said:

കശ്ച രാമഃ കഥംവീര്യഃ കിംരൂപഃ കിംപരാക്രമഃ.

കിമര്ഥം ദണ്ഡകാരണ്യം പ്രവിഷ്ടസ്സുദുരാസദമ്৷৷3.34.2৷৷

രാമഃ Rama, കഃ who is he, കഥംവീര്യഃ what is his strength?, കിംരൂപഃ how does he look, കിംപരാക്രമഃ how valiant, സുദുരാസദമ് impenetrable, ദണ്ഡകാരണ്യമ് Dandaka forest, കിമര്ഥമ് for what purpose?, പ്രവിഷ്ടഃ he entered.

Who is Rama? What is his strength? How does he look? How valiant is he? For what purpose has he entered the impenetrable Dandaka forest?

ആയുധം കിഞ്ച രാമസ്യ നിഹതാ യേന രാക്ഷസാഃ.

ഖരശ്ച നിഹതസ്സംഖ്യേ ദൂഷണസ്ത്രിശിരാസ്തഥാ৷৷3.34.3৷৷

With what weapons he has killed demons like Khara, Dusana and Trisira ?

ഇത്യുക്താ രാക്ഷസേന്ദ്രേണ രാക്ഷസീ ക്രോധമൂര്ഛിതാ.

തതോ രാമം യഥാതത്വമാഖ്യാതുമുപചക്രമേ৷৷3.34.4৷৷

രാക്ഷസേന്ദ്രേണ by the king of demons, ഇതി thus, ഉക്താ spoken, ക്രോധമൂര്ഛിതാ overtaken by anger, രാക്ഷസീ the demoness തതഃ then, രാമമ് Rama, യഥാതത്വമ് faithfully, ആഖ്യാതുമ് to describe, ഉപചക്രമേ she started.

Thus questioned by Ravana, the demoness, overcome by anger, began telling him about Rama faithfully:

ദീര്ഘബാഹുര്വിശാലാക്ഷ ശ്ചീരകൃഷ്ണാജിനാമ്ബരഃ.

കന്ദര്പസമരൂപശ്ച രാമോ ദശരഥാത്മജഃ৷৷3.34.5৷৷

ദശരഥാത്മജഃ Dasaratha's son, രാമഃ Rama, ദീര്ഘബാഹുഃ long- armed, വിശാലാക്ഷഃ large- eyed, ചീരകൃഷ്ണാജിനാമ്ബരഃ clad in deer skin and bark , കന്ദര്പസമരൂപശ്ച resembled Cupid৷৷

Rama, Dasaratha's son, has long arms, large eyes. He is clad in deer-skin and bark. He resembles Cupid.

ശക്രചാപനിഭം ചാപം വികൃഷ്യ കനകാങ്ഗദമ്.

ദീപ്താന് ക്ഷിപതി നാരാചാന്സര്പാനിവ മഹാവിഷാന്৷৷3.34.6৷৷

ശക്രചാപനിഭമ് bow like Indra's, കനകാങ്ഗദമ് gold armlets, ചാപമ് bow, വികൃഷ്യ draws, മഹാവിഷാന് highly poisonous, സര്പാനിവ snake like, ദീപ്താന് glittering, നാരാചാന് iron arrows, ക്ഷിപതി releases.

His bow resembles Indra's, He is adorned with gold bands. Drawing the bow, he releases glittering arrows like highly poisonous snakes.

നാദദാനം ശരാന്ഘോരാന്നമുഞ്ചന്തം ശിലീമുഖാന്.

ന കാര്മുകം വികര്ഷന്തം രാമം പശ്യാമി സംയുഗേ৷৷3.34.7৷৷

സംയുഗേ in war, ഘോരാന് dreadful, ശരാന് arrows, ആദദാനമ് drawing from the quiver, രാമമ് Rama, പശ്യാമി I see, ശിലീമുഖാന് darts, മുഞ്ചന്തമ് released, ന not, കാര്മുകമ് a bow, വികര്ഷന്തമ് pulling apart, ന not.

I could not see Rama in the dreadful war while he was pulling an arrow from the quiver, aiming the dart, and drawing the bow-string.

ഹന്യമാനം തു തത്സൈന്യം പശ്യാമി ശരവൃഷ്ടിഭിഃ.

ഇന്ദ്രേണേവോത്തമം സസ്യമാഹതന്ത്വശ്മവൃഷ്ടിഭിഃ৷৷3.34.8৷৷

ഇന്ദ്രേണ by Indra, അശ്മവൃഷ്ടിഭിഃ by raining hailstones, ആഹതമ് destroyed, ഉത്തമം സസ്യമിവ like the crop ready for harvest, ശരവൃഷ്ടിഭിഃ rain of arrows, ഹന്യമാനമ് killed, തത് സൈന്യമ് that army, പശ്യാമി witnessed.

Just as Indra destroys the crop ready for harvest by raining hailstones, I have seen Rama killing the army with a shower of arrows.

രക്ഷസാം ഭീമരൂപാണാം സഹസ്രാണി ചതുര്ദശ.

നിഹതാനി ശരൈ സ്തീക്ഷ്ണൈസ്തേനൈകേന പദാതിനാ৷৷3.34.9৷৷

അര്ധാധികമുഹൂര്തേന ഖരശ്ച സഹദൂഷണഃ.

പദാതിനാ on foot, ഏകേന alone, തേന by him, തീക്ഷ്ണൈഃ sharp, ശരൈഃ arows, അര്ധാധികമുഹൂര്തേന within the span of one and a half muhurta ( muhurtha is fortyeight minutes), ഭീമരൂപാണാമ് dreadful in appearance, രക്ഷസാമ് demons, ചതുര്ദശ fourteen, സഹസ്രാണി thousand, നിഹതാനി are killed, സഹദൂഷണഃ also Dusana, ഖരശ്ച and Khara.

Fighting alone on foot with his sharp arrows Rama killed within a span of one and a half muhurta, the fourteen thousand dreadful demons including Dusana and Khara.

ഋഷീണാമഭയം ദത്തം കൃതക്ഷേമാശ്ച ദണ്ഡകാഃ৷৷3.34.10৷৷

ഏകാ കഥഞ്ചിന്മുക്താഹം പരിഭൂയ മഹാത്മനാ.

സ്ത്രീവധം ശങ്കമാനേന രാമേണ വിദിതാത്മനാ৷৷3.34.11৷৷

ഋഷീണാമ് for seers, അഭയമ് assurance of safety, ദത്തമ് is given, ദണ്ഡകാഃ Dandaka forest, കൃതക്ഷേമാശ്ച peace restored, മഹാത്മനാ great soul, വിദിതാത്മനാ knower of self, സ്ത്രീവധമ് slaying a woman, ശങ്കമാനേന hesitant of, രാമേണ by Rama, അഹമ് I, ഏകാ only, പരിഭൂയ insulted, കഥഞ്ചിത് somehow, മുക്താ left with life.

Sages have been assured safety. Peace has been restored to Dandaka forest. As Rama, the great soul, who knows the self, hesitated to kill a woman, I was alone saved after this humiliation.

ഭ്രാതാ ചാസ്യ മഹാതേജാ ഗുണതസ്തുല്യവിക്രമഃ.

അനുരക്തശ്ച ഭക്തശ്ച ലക്ഷ്മണോ നാമ വീര്യവാന്৷৷3.34.12৷৷

മഹാതേജാഃ radiant , ഗുണതഃ in quality, തുല്യവിക്രമഃ of equal courage, അനുരക്തശ്ച very loyal, ഭക്തശ്ച devoted, വീര്യവാന് valiant, ലക്ഷ്മണോ നാമ Lakshmana by name, അസ്യ his, ഭ്രാതാ brother.

His brother called Lakshmana looks radiant. He is virtuous and courageous like him, valiant, devoted and loyal.

അമര്ഷീ ദുര്ജയോ ജേതാ വിക്രാന്തോ ബുദ്ധിമാന്ബലീ.

രാമസ്യ ദക്ഷിണോ ബാഹുര്നിത്യം പ്രാണോ ബഹിശ്ചരഃ৷৷3.34.13৷৷

അമര്ഷീ impatient , ദുര്ജയഃ invincible, ജേതാ victorious, വിക്രാന്തഃ very bold, ബുദ്ധിമാന് intelligent, ബലീ strong, നിത്യമ് always, രാമസ്യ Rama, ദക്ഷിണഃ ബാഹുഃ right hand, ബഹിശ്ചരഃ moving outside, പ്രാണഃ his own life.

He is impatient, invincible, victorious, bold, intelligent and strong. He is even the right hand of Rama, his outer life.

രാമസ്യ തു വിശാലാക്ഷീ പൂര്ണേന്ദുസദൃശാനനാ.

ധര്മപത്നീ പ്രിയാ ഭര്തുര്നിത്യം പ്രിയഹിതേ രതാ৷৷3.34.14৷৷

വിശാലാക്ഷീ large- eyed lady, പൂര്ണേന്ദുസദൃശാനനാ face like the full moon, രാമസ്യ Rama's, ധര്മപത്നീ consort, ഭര്തുഃ husband's, പ്രിയാഃ darling, നിത്യമ് always, പ്രിയഹിതേ in the interest of her husband, രതാ engaged.

Rama's beloved consort is a large-eyed lady. Her face is like the full moon. She is engaged in the well-being of her husband.

സാ സുകേശീ സുനാസോരുസ്സുരൂപാ ച യശസ്വിനീ.

ദേവതേവ വനസ്യാസ്യ രാജതേ ശ്രീരിവാപരാ৷৷3.34.15৷৷

സുകേശീ she has long hair, സുനാസോരുഃ has beautiful nose and thighs, സുരൂപാ ച of good look, യശസ്വിനീ illustrious lady, സാ she, അസ്യ of this, വനസ്യ of the forest, ദേവതേവ like the presiding deity, അപരാ another, ശ്രീരിവ like goddess of wealth, രാജതേ shining.

She is an illustrious lady. She is good-looking with her long hair, well-shaped nose and things. She appears to be the presiding deity of the forest, another goddess of wealth (Laxmi).

തപ്തകാഞ്ചനവര്ണാഭാ രക്തതുങ്ഗനഖീ ശുഭാ.

സീതാ നാമ വരാരോഹാ വൈദേഹീ തനുമധ്യമാ৷৷3.34.16৷৷

തപ്തകാഞ്ചനവര്ണാഭാ a lady of shining golden hue, രക്തതുങ്ഗനഖീ of red, pointed nails, ശുഭാ auspicious, വൈദേഹീ daughter of Videha, തനുമധ്യമാ of slender waist, സീതാ നാമ by name Sita, വരാരോഹാ of heavy hips.

She is Sita, princess of Videha, a virtuous lady of golden complexion, a beautiful lady of slender waist and heavy hips.

നൈവ ദേവീ ന ഗന്ധര്വീ ന യക്ഷീ ന ച കിന്നരീ.

നൈവംരൂപാ മയാ നാരീ ദൃഷ്ടപൂര്വാ മഹീതലേ৷৷3.34.17৷৷

ഏവംരൂപാ such a beauty, ദേവീ goddess, മയാ myself, നൈവ ദൃഷ്ടപൂര്വാ not seen earlier, ഗന്ധര്വീ gandharvi, ന not, യക്ഷീ yakshi, ന not, കിന്നരീ kinneri, ന not, നാരീ woman, മഹീതലേ on this earth, ന not.

I had not seen such a beautiful woman earlier, among the gandharvas, or yakshas, or kinneras. I have not seen such a beauty among the humans on earth.

യസ്യ സീതാ ഭവേദ്ഭാര്യാ യം ച ഹൃഷ്ടാ പരിഷ്വജേത്.

അതിജീവേത്സ സര്വേഷു ലോകേഷ്വപി പുരന്ദരാത്৷৷3.34.18৷৷

യസ്യ whose, സീതാ Sita, ഭാര്യാ as wife, ഭവേത് shall be, ഹൃഷ്ടാ happily, യമ് whom ever, പരിഷ്വജേത് she may embrace, സഃ he, സര്വേഷു in all, ലോകേഷു in the worlds, പുരന്ദരാത് അപി more than Indra, the breaker of fortress, അതിജീവേത് may wish to live long.

Whosoever gets Sita as his wife, whoever she embraces happily will wish to live longer than Indra, the breaker of fortresses in this world.

സാ സുശീലാ വപുശ്ശ്ലാഘ്യാ രൂപേണാപ്രതിമാ ഭുവി.

തവാനുരൂപാ ഭാര്യാ സ്യാത്ത്വം ച തസ്യാസ്തഥാ പതിഃ৷৷3.34.19৷৷

സുശീലാ a woman of good conduct, വപുശ്ലാഘ്യാ is a woman of praiseworthy beauty, രൂപേണ by appearance, ഭുവി on this earth, അപ്രതിമാ incomparable, സാ Sita, തവ your, അനുരൂപാ suitable for you, ഭാര്യാ wife, സ്യാത് will be, തഥാ similarly, ത്വമ് you, തസ്യാഃ to her, പതിഃ suitable husband.

She is a woman of good conduct, of praiseworthy beauty. She is matchless in her beauty on earth. She will be a suitable wife for you and you, a suitable husband for her.

താം തു വിസ്തീര്ണജഘനാം പീനശ്രോണിപയോധരാമ്.

ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ ച തവാനേതുമുദ്യതാഹം വരാനനാമ്৷৷3.34.20৷৷

വിരൂപിതാസ്മി ക്രൂരേണ ലക്ഷ്മണേന മഹാഭുജ.

മഹാഭുജ O mighty-armed one, വിസ്തീര്ണജഘനാമ് of broad thighs, പീനശ്രോണിപയോധരാമ് a lady of pointed breasts and high hips, താം വരാനനാമ് of beautiful face, തവ your, ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ as your wife to be, ആനേതുമ് to bring, ഉദ്യതാ I have tried, അഹമ് I, ക്രൂരേണ by the cruel, ലക്ഷ്മണേന by Lakshmana, വിരൂപിതാ അസ്മി have been disfigured.

O mighty-armed one ! I have been disfigured by cruel Lakshmana as I was attempting to bring that lady of broad thighs, pointed breasts, heavy hips and a beautiful face to make her your wife.

താം തു ദൃഷ്ട്വാദ്യ വൈദേഹീം പൂര്ണചന്ദ്രനിഭാനനാമ്.

മന്മഥസ്യ ശരാണാം വൈ ത്വം വിധേയോ ഭവിഷ്യസി৷৷3.34.21৷৷

പൂര്ണചന്ദ്രനിഭാനനാമ് a lady with a face like the full Moon, താമ് her, വൈദേഹീമ് Vaidehi, അദ്യ now, ദൃഷ്ട്വാ by seeing, ത്വമ് you, മന്മഥസ്യ of Cupid, ശരാണാമ് arrows, വിധേയഃ be a victim, ഭവിഷ്യസി will be.

If you see her today, this lady with a face like the fullmoon, you will (instantaneously) fall a victim to the arrows of the god of love.

യദി തസ്യാമഭിപ്രായോ ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ തവ ജായതേ.

ശീഘ്രമുദ്ധ്രിയതാം പാദോ ജയാര്ഥമിഹ ദക്ഷിണഃ৷৷3.34.22৷৷

തസ്യാമ് in her, തവ your, ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ desire to make her your wife, അഭിപ്രായഃ intention, ജായതേ യദി if it arises, ഇഹ from here, ജയാര്ഥമ് to win her over, ദക്ഷിണഃ പാദഃ your right foot, ശീഘ്രമ് quickly, ഉദ്ഘ്രിയതാമ് may be raised.

If you intend her to be your wife, raise your right foot now and proceed to win her over.

കുരു പ്രിയം തഥാ തേഷാം രക്ഷസാം രാക്ഷസേശ്വര.

വധാത്തസ്യ നൃശംസസ്യ രാമസ്യാശ്രമവാസിനഃ৷৷3.34.23৷৷

രാക്ഷസേശ്വര O lord of the demons ! തഥാ such, നൃശംസസ്യ cruel ones, ആശ്രമവാസിനഃ of the dweller of the hermitage, തസ്യ രാമസ്യ of that Rama, വധാത് by killing, തേഷാമ് of those, രക്ഷസാമ് of demons, പ്രിയമ് favour, കുരു do.

O lord of the demons, do a favour to your clan by killing that cruel Rama dwelling in the hermitage.

തം ശരൈര്നിശിതൈര്ഹത്വാ ലക്ഷ്മണം ച മഹാരഥമ്.

ഹതനാഥാം സുഖം സീതാം യഥാവദുപഭോക്ഷ്യസി৷৷3.34.24৷৷

മഹാരഥമ് to that great warrior, തം that, ലക്ഷ്മണം ച Lakshmana also, നിശിതൈഃ with sharp ones, ശരൈഃ with arrows, ഹത്വാ after killing, ഹതനാഥാമ് with her husband killed, സീതാമ് Sita, സുഖമ് happily, യഥാവത് as you like, ഉപഭോക്ഷ്യസി you can enjoy.

Kill Rama, that great warrior along with Lakshmana with sharp arrows and enjoy the company of Sita happily as you like, with her husband dead.

രോചതേ യതി തേ വാക്യം മമൈതദ്രാക്ഷസേശ്വര.

ക്രിയതാം നിര്വിശങ്കേന വചനം മമ രാവണ৷৷3.34.25৷৷

രാക്ഷസേശ്വര O lord of the demons ! രാവണ Ravana, മമ my, ഏതത് all this, വാക്യം word തേ to you, രോചതേ യദി if you like, നിര്വിശങ്കേന without any hesitation, മമ mine, വചനമ് words, ക്രിയതാമ് do as I said.

If you like what I have said, do accordingly without any hesitation, O Ravana, lord of the demons.

വിജ്ഞായേഹാത്മശക്തിം ച ഹ്രിയതാമബലാ ബലാത്.

സീതാ സര്വാനവദ്യാങ്ഗീ ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ രാക്ഷസേശ്വര৷৷3.34.26৷৷

രാക്ഷസേശ്വര O Lord of the demons, ആത്മശക്തിമ് your own strength, വിജ്ഞായ assessing, സര്വാനവദ്യാങ്ഗീ charming in all respects, അബലാ delicate, സീതാ Sita, ഭാര്യാര്ഥേ as wife, ബലാത് forcefully, ഹ്രിയതാമ് abduct.

Assess your own strength, O Lord of the demons, before you forcefully abduct that delicate Sita who is charming in all respects and make her your wife.

നിശമ്യ രാമേണ ശരൈരജിഹ്മഗൈ ര്ഹതാന് ജനസ്ഥാനഗതാന്നിശാചരാന്.

ഖരം ച ബുദ്ധ്വാ നിഹതം ച ദൂഷണം ത്വമത്ര കൃത്യം പ്രതിപത്തുമര്ഹസി৷৷3.34.27৷৷

On hearing about the death of the demons including Khara and Dusana who fell to the straight and swift arrows of Rama, you should decide your course of action.
