[Surpanakha describes Rama and Sita to Ravana--incites him to abduct Sita and make her his wife.]

తతశ్శూర్పణఖాం దృష్ట్వా బ్రువన్తీం పరుషం వచః.

అమాత్యమధ్యే సఙ్క్రుద్ధః పరిపప్రచ్ఛ రావణః৷৷3.34.1৷৷

తతః then, అమాత్యమధ్యే in the midst of ministers, పరుషమ్ harsh, వచః words, బ్రువన్తీమ్ while speaking, శూర్పణఖామ్ to Surpanakha, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, సఙ్క్రుద్ధః enraged, రావణః Ravana, పరిపప్రచ్ఛ asked.

Incensed at the harsh words Surpanakha used in the midst of ministers, Ravana said:

కశ్చ రామః కథంవీర్యః కింరూపః కింపరాక్రమః.

కిమర్థం దణ్డకారణ్యం ప్రవిష్టస్సుదురాసదమ్৷৷3.34.2৷৷

రామః Rama, కః who is he, కథంవీర్యః what is his strength?, కింరూపః how does he look, కింపరాక్రమః how valiant, సుదురాసదమ్ impenetrable, దణ్డకారణ్యమ్ Dandaka forest, కిమర్థమ్ for what purpose?, ప్రవిష్టః he entered.

Who is Rama? What is his strength? How does he look? How valiant is he? For what purpose has he entered the impenetrable Dandaka forest?

ఆయుధం కిఞ్చ రామస్య నిహతా యేన రాక్షసాః.

ఖరశ్చ నిహతస్సంఖ్యే దూషణస్త్రిశిరాస్తథా৷৷3.34.3৷৷

యేన by what, రాక్షసాః demons, ఖరశ్చ and Khara, దూషణః Dusana, తథా likewise, త్రిశిరాః Thrisira, సఙ్ఖ్యే in war, నిహతాః killed, రామస్య Rama's, ఆయుధమ్ weapon, కిమ్ what.

With what weapons he has killed demons like Khara, Dusana and Trisira ?

ఇత్యుక్తా రాక్షసేన్ద్రేణ రాక్షసీ క్రోధమూర్ఛితా.

తతో రామం యథాతత్వమాఖ్యాతుముపచక్రమే৷৷3.34.4৷৷

రాక్షసేన్ద్రేణ by the king of demons, ఇతి thus, ఉక్తా spoken, క్రోధమూర్ఛితా overtaken by anger, రాక్షసీ the demoness తతః then, రామమ్ Rama, యథాతత్వమ్ faithfully, ఆఖ్యాతుమ్ to describe, ఉపచక్రమే she started.

Thus questioned by Ravana, the demoness, overcome by anger, began telling him about Rama faithfully:

దీర్ఘబాహుర్విశాలాక్ష శ్చీరకృష్ణాజినామ్బరః.

కన్దర్పసమరూపశ్చ రామో దశరథాత్మజః৷৷3.34.5৷৷

దశరథాత్మజః Dasaratha's son, రామః Rama, దీర్ఘబాహుః long- armed, విశాలాక్షః large- eyed, చీరకృష్ణాజినామ్బరః clad in deer skin and bark , కన్దర్పసమరూపశ్చ resembled Cupid৷৷

Rama, Dasaratha's son, has long arms, large eyes. He is clad in deer-skin and bark. He resembles Cupid.

శక్రచాపనిభం చాపం వికృష్య కనకాఙ్గదమ్.

దీప్తాన్ క్షిపతి నారాచాన్సర్పానివ మహావిషాన్৷৷3.34.6৷৷

శక్రచాపనిభమ్ bow like Indra's, కనకాఙ్గదమ్ gold armlets, చాపమ్ bow, వికృష్య draws, మహావిషాన్ highly poisonous, సర్పానివ snake like, దీప్తాన్ glittering, నారాచాన్ iron arrows, క్షిపతి releases.

His bow resembles Indra's, He is adorned with gold bands. Drawing the bow, he releases glittering arrows like highly poisonous snakes.

నాదదానం శరాన్ఘోరాన్నముఞ్చన్తం శిలీముఖాన్.

న కార్ముకం వికర్షన్తం రామం పశ్యామి సంయుగే৷৷3.34.7৷৷

సంయుగే in war, ఘోరాన్ dreadful, శరాన్ arrows, ఆదదానమ్ drawing from the quiver, రామమ్ Rama, పశ్యామి I see, శిలీముఖాన్ darts, ముఞ్చన్తమ్ released, న not, కార్ముకమ్ a bow, వికర్షన్తమ్ pulling apart, న not.

I could not see Rama in the dreadful war while he was pulling an arrow from the quiver, aiming the dart, and drawing the bow-string.

హన్యమానం తు తత్సైన్యం పశ్యామి శరవృష్టిభిః.

ఇన్ద్రేణేవోత్తమం సస్యమాహతన్త్వశ్మవృష్టిభిః৷৷3.34.8৷৷

ఇన్ద్రేణ by Indra, అశ్మవృష్టిభిః by raining hailstones, ఆహతమ్ destroyed, ఉత్తమం సస్యమివ like the crop ready for harvest, శరవృష్టిభిః rain of arrows, హన్యమానమ్ killed, తత్ సైన్యమ్ that army, పశ్యామి witnessed.

Just as Indra destroys the crop ready for harvest by raining hailstones, I have seen Rama killing the army with a shower of arrows.

రక్షసాం భీమరూపాణాం సహస్రాణి చతుర్దశ.

నిహతాని శరై స్తీక్ష్ణైస్తేనైకేన పదాతినా৷৷3.34.9৷৷

అర్ధాధికముహూర్తేన ఖరశ్చ సహదూషణః.

పదాతినా on foot, ఏకేన alone, తేన by him, తీక్ష్ణైః sharp, శరైః arows, అర్ధాధికముహూర్తేన within the span of one and a half muhurta ( muhurtha is fortyeight minutes), భీమరూపాణామ్ dreadful in appearance, రక్షసామ్ demons, చతుర్దశ fourteen, సహస్రాణి thousand, నిహతాని are killed, సహదూషణః also Dusana, ఖరశ్చ and Khara.

Fighting alone on foot with his sharp arrows Rama killed within a span of one and a half muhurta, the fourteen thousand dreadful demons including Dusana and Khara.

ఋషీణామభయం దత్తం కృతక్షేమాశ్చ దణ్డకాః৷৷3.34.10৷৷

ఏకా కథఞ్చిన్ముక్తాహం పరిభూయ మహాత్మనా.

స్త్రీవధం శఙ్కమానేన రామేణ విదితాత్మనా৷৷3.34.11৷৷

ఋషీణామ్ for seers, అభయమ్ assurance of safety, దత్తమ్ is given, దణ్డకాః Dandaka forest, కృతక్షేమాశ్చ peace restored, మహాత్మనా great soul, విదితాత్మనా knower of self, స్త్రీవధమ్ slaying a woman, శఙ్కమానేన hesitant of, రామేణ by Rama, అహమ్ I, ఏకా only, పరిభూయ insulted, కథఞ్చిత్ somehow, ముక్తా left with life.

Sages have been assured safety. Peace has been restored to Dandaka forest. As Rama, the great soul, who knows the self, hesitated to kill a woman, I was alone saved after this humiliation.

భ్రాతా చాస్య మహాతేజా గుణతస్తుల్యవిక్రమః.

అనురక్తశ్చ భక్తశ్చ లక్ష్మణో నామ వీర్యవాన్৷৷3.34.12৷৷

మహాతేజాః radiant , గుణతః in quality, తుల్యవిక్రమః of equal courage, అనురక్తశ్చ very loyal, భక్తశ్చ devoted, వీర్యవాన్ valiant, లక్ష్మణో నామ Lakshmana by name, అస్య his, భ్రాతా brother.

His brother called Lakshmana looks radiant. He is virtuous and courageous like him, valiant, devoted and loyal.

అమర్షీ దుర్జయో జేతా విక్రాన్తో బుద్ధిమాన్బలీ.

రామస్య దక్షిణో బాహుర్నిత్యం ప్రాణో బహిశ్చరః৷৷3.34.13৷৷

అమర్షీ impatient , దుర్జయః invincible, జేతా victorious, విక్రాన్తః very bold, బుద్ధిమాన్ intelligent, బలీ strong, నిత్యమ్ always, రామస్య Rama, దక్షిణః బాహుః right hand, బహిశ్చరః moving outside, ప్రాణః his own life.

He is impatient, invincible, victorious, bold, intelligent and strong. He is even the right hand of Rama, his outer life.

రామస్య తు విశాలాక్షీ పూర్ణేన్దుసదృశాననా.

ధర్మపత్నీ ప్రియా భర్తుర్నిత్యం ప్రియహితే రతా৷৷3.34.14৷৷

విశాలాక్షీ large- eyed lady, పూర్ణేన్దుసదృశాననా face like the full moon, రామస్య Rama's, ధర్మపత్నీ consort, భర్తుః husband's, ప్రియాః darling, నిత్యమ్ always, ప్రియహితే in the interest of her husband, రతా engaged.

Rama's beloved consort is a large-eyed lady. Her face is like the full moon. She is engaged in the well-being of her husband.

సా సుకేశీ సునాసోరుస్సురూపా చ యశస్వినీ.

దేవతేవ వనస్యాస్య రాజతే శ్రీరివాపరా৷৷3.34.15৷৷

సుకేశీ she has long hair, సునాసోరుః has beautiful nose and thighs, సురూపా చ of good look, యశస్వినీ illustrious lady, సా she, అస్య of this, వనస్య of the forest, దేవతేవ like the presiding deity, అపరా another, శ్రీరివ like goddess of wealth, రాజతే shining.

She is an illustrious lady. She is good-looking with her long hair, well-shaped nose and things. She appears to be the presiding deity of the forest, another goddess of wealth (Laxmi).

తప్తకాఞ్చనవర్ణాభా రక్తతుఙ్గనఖీ శుభా.

సీతా నామ వరారోహా వైదేహీ తనుమధ్యమా৷৷3.34.16৷৷

తప్తకాఞ్చనవర్ణాభా a lady of shining golden hue, రక్తతుఙ్గనఖీ of red, pointed nails, శుభా auspicious, వైదేహీ daughter of Videha, తనుమధ్యమా of slender waist, సీతా నామ by name Sita, వరారోహా of heavy hips.

She is Sita, princess of Videha, a virtuous lady of golden complexion, a beautiful lady of slender waist and heavy hips.

నైవ దేవీ న గన్ధర్వీ న యక్షీ న చ కిన్నరీ.

నైవంరూపా మయా నారీ దృష్టపూర్వా మహీతలే৷৷3.34.17৷৷

ఏవంరూపా such a beauty, దేవీ goddess, మయా myself, నైవ దృష్టపూర్వా not seen earlier, గన్ధర్వీ gandharvi, న not, యక్షీ yakshi, న not, కిన్నరీ kinneri, న not, నారీ woman, మహీతలే on this earth, న not.

I had not seen such a beautiful woman earlier, among the gandharvas, or yakshas, or kinneras. I have not seen such a beauty among the humans on earth.

యస్య సీతా భవేద్భార్యా యం చ హృష్టా పరిష్వజేత్.

అతిజీవేత్స సర్వేషు లోకేష్వపి పురన్దరాత్৷৷3.34.18৷৷

యస్య whose, సీతా Sita, భార్యా as wife, భవేత్ shall be, హృష్టా happily, యమ్ whom ever, పరిష్వజేత్ she may embrace, సః he, సర్వేషు in all, లోకేషు in the worlds, పురన్దరాత్ అపి more than Indra, the breaker of fortress, అతిజీవేత్ may wish to live long.

Whosoever gets Sita as his wife, whoever she embraces happily will wish to live longer than Indra, the breaker of fortresses in this world.

సా సుశీలా వపుశ్శ్లాఘ్యా రూపేణాప్రతిమా భువి.

తవానురూపా భార్యా స్యాత్త్వం చ తస్యాస్తథా పతిః৷৷3.34.19৷৷

సుశీలా a woman of good conduct, వపుశ్లాఘ్యా is a woman of praiseworthy beauty, రూపేణ by appearance, భువి on this earth, అప్రతిమా incomparable, సా Sita, తవ your, అనురూపా suitable for you, భార్యా wife, స్యాత్ will be, తథా similarly, త్వమ్ you, తస్యాః to her, పతిః suitable husband.

She is a woman of good conduct, of praiseworthy beauty. She is matchless in her beauty on earth. She will be a suitable wife for you and you, a suitable husband for her.

తాం తు విస్తీర్ణజఘనాం పీనశ్రోణిపయోధరామ్.

భార్యార్థే చ తవానేతుముద్యతాహం వరాననామ్৷৷3.34.20৷৷

విరూపితాస్మి క్రూరేణ లక్ష్మణేన మహాభుజ.

మహాభుజ O mighty-armed one, విస్తీర్ణజఘనామ్ of broad thighs, పీనశ్రోణిపయోధరామ్ a lady of pointed breasts and high hips, తాం వరాననామ్ of beautiful face, తవ your, భార్యార్థే as your wife to be, ఆనేతుమ్ to bring, ఉద్యతా I have tried, అహమ్ I, క్రూరేణ by the cruel, లక్ష్మణేన by Lakshmana, విరూపితా అస్మి have been disfigured.

O mighty-armed one ! I have been disfigured by cruel Lakshmana as I was attempting to bring that lady of broad thighs, pointed breasts, heavy hips and a beautiful face to make her your wife.

తాం తు దృష్ట్వాద్య వైదేహీం పూర్ణచన్ద్రనిభాననామ్.

మన్మథస్య శరాణాం వై త్వం విధేయో భవిష్యసి৷৷3.34.21৷৷

పూర్ణచన్ద్రనిభాననామ్ a lady with a face like the full Moon, తామ్ her, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, అద్య now, దృష్ట్వా by seeing, త్వమ్ you, మన్మథస్య of Cupid, శరాణామ్ arrows, విధేయః be a victim, భవిష్యసి will be.

If you see her today, this lady with a face like the fullmoon, you will (instantaneously) fall a victim to the arrows of the god of love.

యది తస్యామభిప్రాయో భార్యార్థే తవ జాయతే.

శీఘ్రముద్ధ్రియతాం పాదో జయార్థమిహ దక్షిణః৷৷3.34.22৷৷

తస్యామ్ in her, తవ your, భార్యార్థే desire to make her your wife, అభిప్రాయః intention, జాయతే యది if it arises, ఇహ from here, జయార్థమ్ to win her over, దక్షిణః పాదః your right foot, శీఘ్రమ్ quickly, ఉద్ఘ్రియతామ్ may be raised.

If you intend her to be your wife, raise your right foot now and proceed to win her over.

కురు ప్రియం తథా తేషాం రక్షసాం రాక్షసేశ్వర.

వధాత్తస్య నృశంసస్య రామస్యాశ్రమవాసినః৷৷3.34.23৷৷

రాక్షసేశ్వర O lord of the demons ! తథా such, నృశంసస్య cruel ones, ఆశ్రమవాసినః of the dweller of the hermitage, తస్య రామస్య of that Rama, వధాత్ by killing, తేషామ్ of those, రక్షసామ్ of demons, ప్రియమ్ favour, కురు do.

O lord of the demons, do a favour to your clan by killing that cruel Rama dwelling in the hermitage.

తం శరైర్నిశితైర్హత్వా లక్ష్మణం చ మహారథమ్.

హతనాథాం సుఖం సీతాం యథావదుపభోక్ష్యసి৷৷3.34.24৷৷

మహారథమ్ to that great warrior, తం that, లక్ష్మణం చ Lakshmana also, నిశితైః with sharp ones, శరైః with arrows, హత్వా after killing, హతనాథామ్ with her husband killed, సీతామ్ Sita, సుఖమ్ happily, యథావత్ as you like, ఉపభోక్ష్యసి you can enjoy.

Kill Rama, that great warrior along with Lakshmana with sharp arrows and enjoy the company of Sita happily as you like, with her husband dead.

రోచతే యతి తే వాక్యం మమైతద్రాక్షసేశ్వర.

క్రియతాం నిర్విశఙ్కేన వచనం మమ రావణ৷৷3.34.25৷৷

రాక్షసేశ్వర O lord of the demons ! రావణ Ravana, మమ my, ఏతత్ all this, వాక్యం word తే to you, రోచతే యది if you like, నిర్విశఙ్కేన without any hesitation, మమ mine, వచనమ్ words, క్రియతామ్ do as I said.

If you like what I have said, do accordingly without any hesitation, O Ravana, lord of the demons.

విజ్ఞాయేహాత్మశక్తిం చ హ్రియతామబలా బలాత్.

సీతా సర్వానవద్యాఙ్గీ భార్యార్థే రాక్షసేశ్వర৷৷3.34.26৷৷

రాక్షసేశ్వర O Lord of the demons, ఆత్మశక్తిమ్ your own strength, విజ్ఞాయ assessing, సర్వానవద్యాఙ్గీ charming in all respects, అబలా delicate, సీతా Sita, భార్యార్థే as wife, బలాత్ forcefully, హ్రియతామ్ abduct.

Assess your own strength, O Lord of the demons, before you forcefully abduct that delicate Sita who is charming in all respects and make her your wife.

నిశమ్య రామేణ శరైరజిహ్మగై ర్హతాన్ జనస్థానగతాన్నిశాచరాన్.

ఖరం చ బుద్ధ్వా నిహతం చ దూషణం త్వమత్ర కృత్యం ప్రతిపత్తుమర్హసి৷৷3.34.27৷৷

రామేణ by Rama, అజిహ్మగైః not moving obliquely, శరైః by arrows, జనస్థానగతాన్ staying at Janasthana, నిశాచరాన్ night-walkers, demons, హతాన్ killed, నిశమ్య after hearing, ఖరం చ Khara and, దూషణం చ Dusana, నిహతమ్ killed, బుద్ధ్వా after knowing, త్వమ్ you, అత్ర here, కృత్యమ్ your duty, ప్రతిపత్తుమ్ to decide, అర్హసి should.

On hearing about the death of the demons including Khara and Dusana who fell to the straight and swift arrows of Rama, you should decide your course of action.

Thus ends the thirtytfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
