[Maricha's narration of his experience of Rama's strength--explains to Ravana the consequences of waging a war with Rama.]

కదాచిదప్యహం వీర్యాత్పర్యటన్పృథివీమిమామ్.

బలం నాగసహస్రస్య ధారయన్పర్వతోపమః৷৷3.38.1৷৷

నీలజీమూతసఙ్కాశస్తప్తకాఞ్చనకుణ్డలః.

భయం లోకస్య జనయన్కిరీటీ పరిఘాయుధః৷৷3.38.2৷৷

వ్యచరం దణ్డకారణ్యే ఋషిమాంసాని భక్షయన్.


కదాచిత్ at one time, అహమపి I also, వీర్యాత్ out of prowess, ఇమామ్ this, పృథివీమ్ earth, పర్యటన్ while wandering, నాగసహస్రస్య thousands of elephants, బలమ్ strength, ధారయన్ while possesed, పర్వతోపమః like a mountain, నీలజీమూతసఙ్కాశః looked like a dark cloud, తప్తకాఞ్చనకుణ్డలః bright gold ear-rings, కిరీటీ crown, పరిఘాయుధః spear, లోకస్య among people, భయమ్ fear, జనయన్ creating, ఋషిమాంసాని flesh of ascetics, భక్షయన్ eating, దణ్డకారణ్యే in Dandaka forest, వ్యచరమ్ I was moving about.

Once I was roaming the earth, like a mountain possessing the strength of a thousand elephants, like a dark cloud, wearing bright gold ear-rings and crown,holding a spear in hand, terrorising the people. I was wandering in Dandaka forest feeding on the flesh of ascetics.
విశ్వామిత్రోథ ధర్మాత్మా మద్విత్రస్తో మహామునిః৷৷3.38.3৷৷

స్వయం గత్వా దశరథం నరేన్ద్రమిదమబ్రవీత్.


అథ hence, ధర్మాత్మా righteous, విశ్వామిత్రః Visvamitra, మహామునిః great sage, మద్విత్రస్తః afraid of me, స్వయమ్ he himself, నరేన్ద్రమ్ king, దశరథమ్ Dasaratha, గత్వా went ఇదమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Hence the great sage, righteous Visvamitra afraid of me, went to king Dasaratha and said:
అద్య రక్షతు మాం రామః పర్వకాలే సమాహితః৷৷3.38.4৷৷

మారీచాన్మే భయం ఘోరం సముత్పన్నం నరేశ్వర.


నరేశ్వర king, మారీచాత్ from Maricha, మే myself, ఘోరం (మహత్) very, భయమ్ fear, సముత్పన్నమ్ has been created, అద్య now, రామః Rama, సమాహితః composed, పర్వకాలే while doing sacrifice at the time of lunar conjunctions on full moon and new moon days, మామ్ రక్షతు protect me.

'O king! Maricha has created in me a great fear. Spare the self possessed Rama to protect me while I do the sacrifice.'
ఇత్యేవముక్తో ధర్మాత్మా రాజా దశరథస్తదా৷৷3.38.5৷৷

ప్రత్యువాచ మహాభాగం విశ్వామిత్రం మహామునిమ్.


ఇత్యేవమ్ thus, ఉక్తః spoken, ధర్మాత్మా righteous, రాజా king, దశరథః Dasaratha, తదా then, మహాభాగమ్ the glorious, మహామునిమ్ the great sage, విశ్వామిత్రమ్ Visvamitra, ప్రత్యువాచ replied.

When the great, venerable sage Visvamitra said so, the righteous king Dasaratha replied:
బాలో ద్వాదశవర్షోయమకృతాస్త్రశ్చ రాఘవః৷৷3.38.6৷৷

కామం తు మమ యత్సైన్యం మయా సహ గమిష్యతి.


అయమ్ this lad, రాఘవః Rama, బాలః young one, ద్వాదశవర్షే: twelve years old, అకృతాస్త్రశ్చ not experienced in the use of weapons, మమ mine, యత్ that, సైన్యమ్ army, కామమ్ surely, మయా సహ along with me, గమిష్యతి will come,

'My son Rama is only twelve. He is not experienced in the use of weapons. I shall accompany you with my army.
బలేన చతురఙ్గేణ స్వయమేత్య నిశాచరాన్৷৷3.38.7৷৷

వధిష్యామి మునిశ్రేష్ఠ శత్రూంస్తే మనసేప్సితాన్.


మునిశ్రేష్ఠ O distinguished sage!, చతురఙ్గేన with four divisions (elephants, horses, cavalry and infantry)of the army, బలేన with army, స్వయమ్ I myself, ఏత్య after coming, తే your, శత్రూన్ enemies, మనసా in your mind, ఈప్సితాన్ desired ones, నిశాచరాన్ night-walkers, వధిష్యామి I will slay.

'O distinguished sage! with the four divisions of my army I will slay the enemies you want me to.'
ఇత్యేవముక్తస్సమునీ రాజానమిదమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.38.8৷৷

రామాన్నాన్యద్బలం లోకే పర్యాప్తం తస్య రక్షసః.


ఇత్యేవమ్ in that way, ఉక్త addressed, సః మునిః that sage, రాజానమ్ to the king, ఇదమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ said, రామాత్ excepting Rama, అన్యత్ other, బలమ్ strength, తస్య రక్షసః for that demon, లోకే in this world, న పర్యాప్తమ్ not enough.

When the king thus responded to the sage, he told him that none other than Rama in this world is a match for that demon.
దేవతానామపి భవాన్ సమరేష్వభిపాలకః৷৷3.38.9৷৷

ఆసీత్తవ కృతం కర్మ త్రిలోకే విదితం నృప.


నృప O king, భవాన్ you, సమరేషు in wars, దేవతానామపి even to gods, అభిపాలకః a guardian, కృతమ్ help, తవ your, కర్మ deed, త్రిలోకే in the three worlds, విదితమ్ well known, ఆసీత్ was.

'O king, you have protected even gods in wars and have been a guardian. Your deeds are very well-known in the three worlds.
కామమస్తు మహత్సైన్యం తిష్ఠత్విహ పరన్తప৷৷3.38.10৷৷

బాలోప్యేష మహాతేజాస్సమర్థస్తస్య నిగ్రహే.

గమిష్యే రామమాదాయ స్వస్తి తేస్తు పరన్తప৷৷3.38.11৷৷


పరన్తప O scourge of the foes, మహత్ great, సైన్యమ్ army, అస్తు కామమ్ so you wish, ఇహ here, తిష్ఠతు let it stay, మహాతేజాః glorious one, ఏషః he, బాలోపి even if he is a boy, తస్య his, నిగ్రహే in suppressing, సమర్థః capable, పరన్తప subduer of enemy, రామమ్ Rama, ఆదాయ after taking, గమిష్యే I will go, తే to you, స్వస్తి auspicious, అస్తు be.

'O scourge of foes! as you wish, let your great army wait here. Even though Rama is young he is glorious, and capable of subduing the enemy. I will take him. Be blessed.'
ఏవముక్త్వా తు స మునిస్తమాదాయ నృపాత్మజమ్.

జగామ పరమప్రీతో విశ్వామిత్రస్స్వమాశ్రమమ్৷৷3.38.12৷৷


సః that, విశ్వామిత్రః మునిః sage Visvamitra, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్త్వా having said, పరమప్రీతః very happily, తమ్ him, నృపాత్మజమ్ prince Rama, ఆదాయ after taking, స్వమ్ his, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitage, జగామ went.

Sage Visvamitra saying so took the son of the king and went back very happily to his hermitage.
తం తదా దణ్డకారణ్యే యజ్ఞముద్దిశ్య దీక్షితమ్.

బభూవోపస్థితో రామశ్చిత్రం విష్ఫారయన్ధనుః৷৷3.38.13৷৷


తదా then, రామః Rama, దణ్డకారణ్యే in Dandaka forest, యజ్ఞమ్ Yagna, ఉద్దిశ్య for the purpose, దీక్షితమ్ settled in rigorous religious discipline(vow), తమ్ him, ఉపస్థితః standing by, చిత్రమ్ wonderful, ధనుః bow, విష్ఫారయన్ while stretching, బభూవ became.

Then Rama was initiated for the protection of sacrifices and stood on guard, stretching his wonderful bow.
అజాతవ్యఞ్జనశ్రీమాన్పద్మపత్రనిభేక్షణః.

ఏకవస్త్రధరో ధన్వీ శిఖీ కనకమాలయా৷৷3.38.14৷৷

శోభయన్ దణ్డకారణ్యం దీప్తేన స్వేన తేజసా.

అదృశ్యత తతో రామో బాలచన్ద్ర ఇవోదితః৷৷3.38.15৷৷


తతః thereafter, అజాతవ్యఞ్జనః with beards ungrown, శ్రీమాన్ handsome, పద్మపత్రనిభేక్షణః having eyes like lotus petals, ఏకవస్త్రధరః clad in a single garment, ధన్వీ wielding bow, శిఖీ wearing a knot of hair on the head, కనకమాలయా with a gold chain, దీప్తేన luminous, స్వేన by his, తేజసా by lustre, దణ్డకారణ్యమ్ Dandaka forest, శోభయన్ beautifying, రామః Rama, ఉదితః just risen, బాలచన్ద్ర ఇవ like young Moon, అదృశ్యత looked.

Thereafter, handsome Rama, with eyes like lotus petals, beards ungrown, clad in a single garment with knotted hair on the head, wielding a bow, with a chain of gold, luminous with his own lustre enhanced the glory of Dandaka forest by looking like the young moon just risen.
తతోహం మేఘసఙ్కాశస్తప్తకాఞ్చనకుణ్డలః.

బలీ దత్తవరోదర్పాదాజగామ తదాశ్రమమ్৷৷3.38.16৷৷


తతః then, మేఘసఙ్కాశః looking like a dark hued cloud, తప్తకాఞ్చనకుణ్డలః wearing bright golden ear-rings, బలీ a strong man, దత్తవరః bestowed with boons, అహమ్ I, దర్పాత్ with pride, తదాశ్రమమ్ the hermitage, ఆజగామ arrived.

Then looking like a dark cloud, wearing bright golden ear-rings, proud of power bestowed on me with boons, I arrived at the hermitage.
తేన దృష్టః ప్రవిష్టోహం సహసైవోద్యతాయుధః.

మాం తు దృష్ట్వా ధనుస్సజ్యమసమ్భ్రాన్తశ్చకార సః৷৷3.38.17৷৷


ఉద్యతాయుధః with raised weapons, ప్రవిష్టః entered, అహమ్ I, సహసైవ at once, తేన by him, Rama, దృష్టః seen, సః he, మామ్ me, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, అసమ్భ్రాన్తః unperturbed, ధనుః bow, సజ్యమ్
stringing, చకార did.

I entered at once and lifted my weapons. Rama saw me and unperturbed, started stringing his bow.
అవజానన్నహం మోహాద్బాలోయమితి రాఘవమ్.

విశ్వామిత్రస్య తాం వేదిమభ్యధావం కృతత్వరః৷৷3.38.18৷৷


అహమ్ I, మోహాత్ due to delusion, అయమ్ this, బాలః young boy, ఇతి in this way, రాఘవమ్ Rama, అవజానన్ underestimating, కృతత్వరః making sounds, విశ్వామిత్రస్య Visvamitra's, తామ్ that, వేదిమ్ sacrificial altar, అభ్యధావమ్ ran towards the same.

Out of my delusion I underestimated the young boy, and screaming, ran towards Visvamitra's sacrificial altar.
తేన ముక్తస్తతో బాణః శితశ్శత్రునిబర్హణః.

తేనాహం త్వాహతః క్షిప్తస్సముద్రే శతయోజనే৷৷3.38.19৷৷


తతః then, తేన by him, శత్రునిబర్హణః a subduer of enemy, శితః sharp, బాణః arrow, ముక్తః unleashed, అహమ్ on me, తేన with that, ఆహతః struck, శతయోజనే one hundred yojanas away, సముద్రే into the sea, ఆక్షిప్త: I was thrown.

Then Rama released a sharp arrow that could kill the enemy. It struck me and threw me at a distance of hundred yojanas into the sea.
నేచ్ఛతా తాత మాం హన్తుం తదా వీరేణ రక్షితః.

రామస్య శరవేగేన నిరస్తోహమచేతనః৷৷3.38.20৷৷


తాత O dear, తదా then, మామ్ me, హన్తుమ్ to kill, నేచ్ఛతా by not intending, వీరేణ రక్షితః protected by the hero, రామస్య Rama's, శరవేగేన by the speed of his dart, అచేతనః lost conciousness, అహమ్ I, నిరస్తః thrown away.

O dear! being thrown away by the speed of his dart I lost my consciousness. I was protected by Rama who did not want to kill me.
పాతితోహం తదా తేన గమ్భీరే సాగరామ్భసి.

ప్రాప్య సంజ్ఞాం చిరాత్తాత లఙ్కాం ప్రతిగతః పురీమ్৷৷3.38.21৷৷


తాత O dear!, తదా then, అహమ్ I, గమ్భీరే in deep, సాగరామ్భసి in sea water, పాతితః was thrown, చిరాత్ after a long time, సంజ్ఞామ్ consciousess, ప్రాప్య after attaining, లఙ్కాం పురీమ్ city of Lanka, ప్రతిగతః went towards.

O dear! I was thrown into the deep sea and after a long time regained consciousness and returned to the city of Lanka.
ఏవమస్మి తదా ముక్తస్సహాయాస్తు నిపాతితాః.

అకృతాస్త్రేణ బాలేన రామేణాక్లిష్టకర్మణా৷৷3.38.22৷৷


తదా then, అకృతాస్త్రేణ who had not mastered archery, బాలేన by the young boy, అక్లిష్టకర్మణా by one who acomplishes any task with ease, రామేణ by Rama, ఏవమ్ in that way, ముక్తః అస్మి I was spared, సహాయాస్తు others who accompanied me, నిపాతితాః were destroyed.

That way I was spared by the young boy who was not versed in archery and who could still accomplish the task with ease.Those who accompanied me were destroyed.
తన్మయా వార్యమాణస్త్వం యది రామేణ విగ్రహమ్.

కరిష్యస్యాపదం ఘోరాం క్షిప్రం ప్రాప్స్యసి రావణ৷৷3.38.23৷৷


రావణ Ravana, తత్ that, మయా by me, వార్యమాణః while being prevented, త్వమ్ you, రామేణ with Rama, విగ్రహమ్ conflict, కరిష్యసి యది if you wage, క్షిప్రమ్ very soon, ఘోరామ్ dreadful, ఆపదమ్ calamity, ప్రాప్స్యసి you will face.

If you pick up conflict with Rama even while being warned by me you will soon face a
dreadful calamity.
క్రీడారతివిధిజ్ఞానాం సమాజోత్సవశాలినామ్.

రక్షసాం చైవ సన్తాపమనర్థం చాహరిష్యసి৷৷3.38.24৷৷


క్రీడారతివిధిజ్ఞానామ్ of those who know love-sport, సమాజోత్సవశాలినామ్ of those who celebrate community festivals, రక్షసాం చైవ of demons too, సన్తాపమ్ grief, అనర్థం చ disaster, ఆహరిష్యసి you will bring.

You will bring grief and disaster into the lives of demons who are sporting in love and who are in the habit of celebrating community festivals with joy.
హర్మ్యప్రాసాదసమ్బాధాం నానారత్నవిభూషితామ్.

ద్రక్ష్యసి త్వం పురీం లఙ్కాం వినష్టాం మైథిలీకృతే৷৷3.38.25৷৷


హర్మ్యప్రాసాదసమ్బాధామ్ with magnificent royal mansions, నానారత్నవిభూషితామ్ embellisted with various gems, లఙ్కాం పురీమ్ city of Lanka, త్వమ్ you, మైథిలీకృతే for the sake of Sita, వినష్టామ్ ruined, ద్రక్ష్యసి you will see.

You will see the city of Lanka dotted with magnificent royal mansions embellished with different kinds of gems ruined for the sake of Sita.
అకుర్వన్తోపి పాపాని శుచయః పాపసంశ్రయాత్.

పరపాపైర్వినశ్యన్తి మత్స్యా నాగహ్రదే యథా৷৷3.38.26৷৷


పాపాని sins, అకుర్వన్తోపి even without committing, శుచయః pure men, పాపసంశ్రయాత్ by contact with sinners, నాగహ్రదే in a pool of serpents, మత్స్యాః యథా like the fish, పరపాపైః sins committed by others, వినశ్యన్తి will be destroyed.

Even without committing any sin those pure souls because they keep company with sinners will be destroyed for the sins of others just like fishes in a pool of serpents.
దివ్యచన్దనదిగ్ధాఙ్గాన్దివ్యాభరణభూషితాన్.

ద్రక్ష్యస్యభిహతాన్భూమౌ తవ దోషాత్తు రాక్షసాన్৷৷3.38.27৷৷


దివ్యచన్దనదిగ్ధాఙ్గాన్ with limbs smeared with sandal paste and unguents, దివ్యాభరణభూషితాన్ adorned with excellent ornaments, రాక్షసాన్ demons, తవ దోషాత్ for your mistakes, భూమౌ on this earth, అభిహతాన్ killed, ద్రక్ష్యసి you will see.

You will see the demons who smear their limbs with sandal paste and unguents, who are adorned with excellent ornaments slain and laid on the ground for your mistakes.
హృతదారాన్ సదారాంశ్చ దశ విద్రవతో దిశః.

హతశేషానశరణాన్ద్రక్ష్యసి త్వం నిశాచరాన్৷৷3.38.28৷৷


హతశేషాన్ the surviving, నిశాచరాన్ demons, హృతదారాన్ with their wives abducted, సదారాంశ్చ those with wives, అశరణాన్ with none to take care of them, దశ దిశః in ten directions, విద్రవతః while running, త్వమ్ you, ద్రక్ష్యసి you will see.

You will see the rest of the demons with their wives gone or fleeing in all directions helplessly with none to take care of them.
శరజాలపరిక్షిప్తామగ్నిజ్వాలాసమావృతామ్.

ప్రదగ్ధభవనాం లఙ్కాం ద్రక్ష్యసి త్వం న సంశయః৷৷3.38.29৷৷


శరజాలపరిక్షిప్తామ్ scattered arrows, అగ్నిజ్వాలాసమావృతామ్ surrounded by flames of fire, ప్రదగ్ధభవనామ్ with buildings on fire, లఙ్కామ్ Lanka, త్వమ్ you, ద్రక్ష్యసి you will see, సంశయః doubt, న not.

You will undoubtedly see Lanka filled with arrows, surrounded by flames of fire and its buildings on fire.
పరదారాభిమర్శాత్తు నాన్యత్పాపతరం మహత్.

ప్రమదానాం సహస్రం చ తవ రాజన్పరిగ్రహః৷৷3.38.30৷৷


పరదారాభిమర్శాత్ violating the chastity of others' wives, పాపతరమ్ a greater sin, మహత్ highly, అన్యత్ other thing, న not, రాజన్ O king, ప్రమదానామ్ women సహస్రమ్ thousand, తవ your, పరిగ్రహఃwhom you married,

O king! there is no sin greater than violating the chastity of others wives, when you have married a thousand lovely women.
భవ స్వదారనిరతస్వకులం రక్ష రాక్షస.

మానమృద్ధిం చ రాజ్యం చ జీవితం చేష్టమాత్మనః৷৷3.38.31৷৷


రాక్షస O demon, స్వదారనిరతః enjoy your own wives, భవ be, స్వకులమ్ your race, రక్ష you protect, మానమ్ prestige, ఋద్ధిం చ prosperity also, రాజ్యం చ kingdom too, ఆత్మనః your, ఇష్టమ్ dear, జీవితం చ and your life.

Enjoy with your wives. Protect your race, prestige, kingdom, prosperity and your own dear life.
కలత్రాణి చ సౌమ్యాని మిత్రవర్గం తథైవ చ.

యదీచ్ఛసి చిరం భోక్తం మా కృథా రామవిప్రియమ్৷৷3.38.32৷৷


సౌమ్యాని beautiful ones, కలత్రాణి wives, తథైవ చ similarly, మిత్రవర్గమ్ friends, చిరమ్ for a long time, భోక్తుమ్ to enjoy, ఇచ్ఛసి యది wish to, రామ విప్రియమ్ offence to Rama, మా కృథాః do not do.

If you wish to enjoy your beautiful wives and your good friends for long, do not create enmity with Rama.
నివార్యమాణస్సుహృదా మయా భృశం ప్రసహ్య సీతాం యది ధర్షయిష్యసి.

గమిష్యసి క్షీణబలస్సబాన్ధవో యమక్షయం రామశరాత్తజీవితః৷৷3.38.33৷৷


సుహృదా by a friend, మయా by myself, భృశమ్ profusely, నివార్యమాణః prevented, సీతామ్ Sita, ప్రసహ్య forcibly, ధర్షయిష్యసి యది if you violate Sita, క్షీణబలః with reduced strength, సబాన్ధవః along with your kin, రామశరాత్తజీవితః your life taken away by Rama's arrows, యమక్షయమ్ abode of Yama , గమిష్యసి you will go.

If you violate Sita forcibly notwithstanding my friendly warning, your life will be drained by the arrows of Rama and you will reach the abode of Yama with your kith and kin, your strength depleted.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే అష్టత్రింశస్సర్గః.
Thus ends the thirtyeighth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
