[Maricha describes his escape to Dandaka forest -- advises Ravana against the idea of encountering Rama.]

ಏವಮಸ್ಮಿ ತದಾ ಮುಕ್ತಃ ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ತೇನ ಸಂಯುಗೇ.

ಇದಾನೀಮಪಿ ಯದ್ವೃತ್ತಂ ತಚ್ಛೃಣುಷ್ವ ನಿರುತ್ತರಮ್৷৷3.39.1৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತೇನ by him, ಸಂಯುಗೇ in the combat, ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ somehow , ಏವಮ್ in that way, ಮುಕ್ತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I was released, ಇದಾನೀಮಪಿ recently also, ಯತ್ whatever, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ has taken place, ತತ್ that, ನಿರುತ್ತರಮ್ without any reply, ಶೃಣುಷ್ವ listen to it.

I was somehow saved by him this way in the combat.Listen without any reply to what has taken place recently.
ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಭ್ಯಾಮಹಂ ದ್ವಾಭ್ಯಾಮನಿರ್ವಿಣ್ಣಸ್ತಥಾ ಕೃತಃ.

ತಥಾಕೃತಃ having done so, ಅನಿರ್ವಿಣ್ಣಃ unworried, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮೃಗರೂಪಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ in the form of deer, ದ್ವಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by two, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by demons, ಸಹಿತಃ accompanied by, ದಣ್ಡಕಾವನಮ್ forest of Dandaka, ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಃ entered.

Having done so, I picked up courage and entered Dandaka forest, accompanied by the two other demons in the form of deer .
ದೀಪ್ತಜಿಹ್ವೋ ಮಹಾಕಾಯಸ್ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣದಂಷ್ಟ್ರೋ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ವ್ಯಚರಂ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಂ ಮಾಂಸಭಕ್ಷೋ ಮಹಾಮೃಗಃ৷৷3.39.3৷৷


ದೀಪ್ತಜಿಹ್ವಃ flaming red tongue, ಮಹಾಕಾಯಃ big body, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣದಂಷ್ಟ್ರಃ sharp teeth, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ very strong , ಮಾಂಸಭಕ್ಷಃ feeding on flesh, ಮಹಾಮೃಗಃ a huge animal, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ Dandaka forest, ವ್ಯಚರಮ್ wandered.

I wandered in Dandaka forest in the form of a huge animal with a big and strong body, a flaming red tongue and sharp teeth feeding on flesh.
ಅಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರೇಷು ತೀರ್ಥೇಷು ಚೈತ್ಯವೃಕ್ಷೇಷು ರಾವಣ.

ಅತ್ಯನ್ತಘೋರೋ ವ್ಯಚರಂ ತಾಪಸಾನ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಯನ್৷৷3.39.4৷৷


ರಾವಣ Ravana!, ಅತ್ಯನ್ತಘೋರಃ very dreadful , ಅಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರೇಷು at the sacrificial sites, ತೀರ್ಥೇಷು at sacred rivers, ಚೈತ್ಯವೃಕ್ಷೇಷು alter at the root of fig trees in sacred places, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ ascetics, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಯನ್ torturing, ವ್ಯಚರಮ್ I wandered.

O Ravana, assuming a very dreadful form, I wandered about sacrificial spots, sacred places, river banks, under huge trees planted at quadrangles-torturing the ascetics.
ನಿಹತ್ಯ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ ತಾಪಸಾನ್ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಃ.

ರುಧಿರಾಣಿ ಪಿಬಂಸ್ತೇಷಾಂ ತಥಾ ಮಾಂಸಾನಿ ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್৷৷3.39.5৷৷


ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ in the Dandaka forest, ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಃ following righteousness, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ ascetics, ನಿಹತ್ಯ after slaying, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ರುಧಿರಾಣಿ blood, ಪಿಬನ್ drinking, ತಥಾ likewise, ಮಾಂಸಾನಿ flesh, ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ eating.

I wandered about the Dandaka forest slaying righteous ascetics, drinking their blood and eating their flesh.
ಋಷಿಮಾಂಸಾಶನಃ ಕ್ರೂರಸ್ತ್ರಾಸಯನ್ವನಗೋಚರಾನ್.

ತಥಾ ರುಧಿರಮತ್ತೋಹಂ ವಿಚರನ್ಧರ್ಮದೂಷಕಃ৷৷3.39.6৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಋಷಿಮಾಂಸಾಶನಃ eater of the flesh of ascetics, ಕ್ರೂರಃ cruel, ವನಗೋಚರಾನ್ roamers of the forest, ತ್ರಾಸಯನ್ while frightening, ತಥಾ likewise, ರುಧಿರಮತ್ತಃ intoxicated with their blood, ಧರ್ಮದೂಷಕಃ harming the righteous, ವಿಚರನ್ wandered.

While thus roaming, I harmed the wanderers of the forest. Intoxicated with their blood
I used to frighten the righteous.
ಆಸಾದಯಂ ತದಾ ರಾಮಂ ತಾಪಸಂ ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಮ್.

ವೈದೇಹೀಂ ಚ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ ಮಹಾರಥಮ್৷৷3.39.7৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಮ್ the followers of the righteous path, ತಾಪಸಮ್ ascetic, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಮ್ venerable lady, ವೈದೇಹೀಂ ಚ Vaidehi too, ಮಹಾರಥಮ್ great warrior, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ಚ and Lakshmana, ಆಸಾದಯಮ್ I encountered.

I encountered again the righteous Rama who was in the form of an ascetic, with venerable Sita and the great warrior Lakshmana.
ತಾಪಸಂ ನಿಯತಾಹಾರಂ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಹಿತೇ ರತಮ್.

ಸೋಹಂ ವನಗತಂ ರಾಮಂ ಪರಿಭೂಯ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್৷৷3.39.8৷৷

ತಾಪಸೋಯಮಿತಿ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಪೂರ್ವವೈರಮನುಸ್ಮರನ್.

ಅಭ್ಯಧಾವಂ ಹಿ ಸಂಕ್ರುದ್ಧಸ್ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣ ಶೃಙ್ಗೋ ಮೃಗಾಕೃತಿಃ৷৷3.39.9৷৷

ಜಿಘಾಂಸುರಕೃತಪ್ರಜ್ಞಸ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಹಾರಮನುಸ್ಮರನ್.


ಮೃಗಾಕೃತಿಃ in the form of a deer, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಶೃಙ್ಗ: pointed horns, ಸಃ ಅಹಮ್ that me, ಪೂರ್ವವೈರಮ್ earlier hostility, ಅನುಸ್ಮರನ್ remembering, ತಾಪಸಮ್ ascetic, ನಿಯತಾಹಾರಮ್ with restricted food, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಹಿತೇ well-wisher of all beings, ರತಮ್ engaged, ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್ very strong, ವನಗತಮ್ came to the forest, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅಯಮ್ this, ತಾಪಸಃ an ascetic, ಇತಿ thus thinking, ಪರಿಭೂಯ disregarding, ತಂ ಪ್ರಹಾರಮ್ his blow in the past, ಅನುಸ್ಮರನ್ remembering, ಜಿಘಾಂಸುಃ with an intention of killing, ಸಙ್ಕೃದ್ಧಃ very angry, ಅಭ್ಯಧಾವಮ್ ran towards him.

Although Rama was very strong, he was living on restricted diet, engaged in the welfare of all beings. Treating him as a mere ascetic living in the forest, remembering my past hostility with him and disregarding his (fatal) blow, I ran towards him angrily, assuming the form of a sharp-horned animal with an intention to kill him.
ತೇನ ಮುಕ್ತಾಸ್ತ್ರಯೋ ಬಾಣಾಶ್ಶಿತಾಶ್ಶತ್ರುನಿಬರ್ಹಣಾಃ৷৷3.39.10৷৷

ವಿಕೃಷ್ಯ ಬಲವಚ್ಚಾಪಂ ಸುಪರ್ಣಾನಿಲನಿಸ್ಸ್ವನಾಃ.


ತೇನ by him, ಚಾಪಮ್ bow, ಬಲವತ್ might, ವಿಕೃಷ್ಯ having drawn, ಶತ್ರುನಿಬರ್ಹಣಾಃ slayers of enemies, ಶಿತಾಃ sharp, ಸುಪರ್ಣಾನಿಲನಿಸ್ವನಾಃ whizzing like Garuda or the wind, ತ್ರಯಃ three, ಬಾಣಾಃ darts, ಮುಕ್ತಾಃ released.

His mighty bow drawn, Rama released three sharp darts that came whizzing like Garuda or the wind. They could destroy the enemy.
ತೇ ಬಾಣಾ ವಜ್ರಸಙ್ಕಾಶಾಸ್ಸುಮುಕ್ತಾ ರಕ್ತಭೋಜನಾಃ.

ಆಜಗ್ಮುಸ್ಸಹಿತಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ತ್ರಯಸ್ಸನ್ನತಪರ್ವಣಃ৷৷3.39.11৷৷


ವಜ್ರಸಙ್ಕಾಶಾಃ like the thunderbolt, ರಕ್ತಭೋಜನಾಃ which feed on blood, ಸನ್ನತಪರ್ವಣಃ with strong joints, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ತೇ ತ್ರಯಃ ಬಾಣಾಃ the three darts, ಸುಮುಕ್ತಾಃ well-targetted, ಸಹಿತಾಃ together, ಆಜಗ್ಮುಃ came at once.

All the three tightly jointed, well-targetted darts, strong as thunderbolt, and which could feed on blood came together all at once.
ಪರಾಕ್ರಮಜ್ಞೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಶಠೋ ದೃಷ್ಟಭಯಃ ಪುರಾ.

ಸಮುದ್ಭಾನ್ತಸ್ತತೋಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತಾವುಭೌ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೌ ಹತೌ৷৷3.39.12৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಶಠ: deceitful, ಪುರಾ earlier, ದೃಷ್ಟಭಯಃ having seen that fearful, ಪರಾಕ್ರಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of his prowess, ಸಮುದ್ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಃ in a bewildered state, ತತಃ then, ಮುಕ್ತಃ let away, ತೌ two others, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೌ two demons, ಉಭೌ both, ಹತೌ were killed.

Having known Rama's prowess earlier and experienced tremendous fear, I ran away in a bewildered state as I was deceitful. The other two demons (who had accompanied me) succumbed.
ಶರೇಣ ಮುಕ್ತೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಜೀವಿತಮ್.

ಇಹ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೋ ಯುಕ್ತಸ್ತಾಪಸೋಹಂ ಸಮಾಹಿತಃ৷৷3.39.13৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಶರೇಣ by the darts, ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ somehow, ಮುಕ್ತಃ escaped, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having attained, ಯುಕ್ತಃ engaged in, ಸಮಾಹಿತಃ composed state, ತಾಪಸಃ an ascetic, ಇಹ here, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಃ have started living the life of a recluse.

With my escape from Rama's darts I somehow got a fresh lease of life. Now I am composed. I have started living the life of a recluse here. I have turned an ascetic.
ವೃಕ್ಷೇ ವೃಕ್ಷೇ ಚ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಚೀರಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಾಮ್ಬರಮ್.

ಗೃಹೀತಧನುಷಂ ರಾಮಂ ಪಾಶಹಸ್ತಮಿವಾನ್ತಕಮ್৷৷3.39.14৷৷


ಚೀರಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಾಮ್ಬರಮ್ clad in bark and deer-skin, ಗೃಹೀತಧನುಷಮ್ holding the bow, ಪಾಶಹಸ್ತಮ್ having a noose in hand, ಅನ್ತಕಮಿವ like the god of death, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ವೃಕ್ಷೇ ವೃಕ್ಷೇ in every tree, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see.

I see Rama in every tree, clad in bark and deer-skin, wielding the bow, holding a noose in hand like the god of death.
ಅಪಿ ರಾಮಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಭೀತಃ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಾವಣ.

ರಾಮಭೂತಮಿದಂ ಸರ್ವಮರಣ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಮೇ৷৷3.39.15৷৷


ರಾವಣ Ravana, ಭೀತಃ fearful, ರಾಮಸಹಸ್ರಾಣ್ಯಪಿ thousands of Ramas, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see, ಇದಮ್ this, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all over, ಅರಣ್ಯಮ್ forest, ರಾಮಭೂತಮ್ filled with Rama, ಮೇ to me, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ appears.

O Ravana! I see in my fear thousands of Ramas. The entire forest appears to me as though filled with Rama.
ರಾಮಮೇವ ಹಿ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಹಿತೇ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪ.

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸ್ವಪ್ನಗತಂ ರಾಮಮುದ್ಭ್ರಮಾಮಿ ವಿಚೇತನಃ৷৷3.39.16৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪ O king of the demons, ರಹಿತೇ in a solitary state, ರಾಮಮೇವ only Rama, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see, ಸ್ವಪ್ನಗತಮ್ even in my dreams, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ವಿಚೇತನಃ senseless, ಉದ್ಭ್ರಮಾಮಿ I am bewildered.

O king of the demons ! I see only Rama even in solitude. When I see him in a dream I lose my senses in a state of bewilderment.
ರಕಾರಾದೀನಿ ನಾಮಾನಿ ರಾಮತ್ರಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ರಾವಣ.

ರತ್ನಾನಿ ಚ ರಥಾಶ್ಚೈವ ತ್ರಾಸಂ ಸಂಜನಯನ್ತಿ ಮೇ৷৷3.39.17৷৷


ರಾವಣ Ravana, ರಾಮತ್ರಸ್ತಸ್ಯ for one frightened by Rama, ಮೇ to, me, ರಕಾರಾದೀನಿ ನಾಮಾನಿ names beginning with 'Ra', ರತ್ನಾನಿ gems, ರಥಾಶ್ಚೈವ chariots also, ತ್ರಾಸಮ್ fear, ಸಞ್ಜನಯನ್ತಿ create in me.

O Ravana!, every name beginning with the letter 'Ra', such as Ratna (gems), Ratha (chariot), etc. strike terror in me.
ಅಹಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವಜ್ಞೋ ನ ಯುದ್ಧಂ ತೇನ ತೇ ಕ್ಷಮಮ್.

ಬಲಿಂ ವಾ ನಮುಚಿಂ ವಾಪಿ ಹನ್ಯಾದ್ಧಿ ರಘುನನ್ದನಃ৷৷3.39.18৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಪ್ರಭಾವಜ್ಞಃ knower of his power, ತೇ to you, ತೇನ with him, ಯುದ್ಧಮ್ war, ಕ್ಷಮಮ್ proper, ನ not, ರಘುನನ್ದನಃ delight of the Raghu dynasty (Rama), ಬಲಿಂ ವಾ Bali or, ನಮುಚಿಂ ವಾಪಿ even Namuchi, ಹನ್ಯಾದ್ಧಿ can slay.

I know his power.It is not proper to wage a war with him. Rama, delight of the Raghu dynasty, can slay even Bali or Namuchi.
ರಣೇ ರಾಮೇಣ ಯುದ್ಧ್ಯಸ್ವ ಕ್ಷಮಾಂ ವಾ ಕುರು ರಾಕ್ಷಸ .

ನ ತೇ ರಾಮಕಥಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ ಯದಿ ಮಾಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ ৷৷3.39.19 ৷৷

ಬಹವಸ್ಸಾಧವೋ ಲೋಕೇ ಯುಕ್ತಾ ಧರ್ಮಮನುಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ.

ಪರೇಷಾಮಪರಾಧೇನ ವಿನಷ್ಠಾಸ್ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಾಃ৷৷3.39.20৷৷


ಲೋಕೇ in the world, ಯುಕ್ತಾಃ absorbed in, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ righteous ways, ಅನುಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ followers, ಬಹವಃ many, ಸಾಧವ: pious people, ಪರೇಷಾಮ್ of others, ಅಪರಾಧೇನ by their mistake, ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಾಃ along with all
their followers, ವಿನಷ್ಟಾಃ are destroyed.

There were many pious men in this world who practise yoga and dharma .They have been destroyed along with their retinue due to mistakes committed by others.
ಸೋಹಂ ತವಾಪರಾಧೇನ ವಿನಶ್ಯೇಯಂ ನಿಶಾಚರ.

ಕುರು ಯತ್ತೇ ಕ್ಷಮಂ ತತ್ತ್ವಮಹಂ ತ್ವಾ ನಾನುಯಾಮಿ ಹ৷৷3.39.21৷৷


ನಿಶಾಚರ O demon, ಸಃ ಅಹಮ್ that I, ತವ ಅಪರಾಧೇನ by your mistake, ವಿನಶ್ಯೇಯಮ್ I will be ruined, ತೇ to you, ಯತ್ whatever, ಕ್ಷಮಮ್ appropriate, ತತ್ that, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಕುರು you may do, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತ್ವಾ you, ನ ಅನುಯಾಮಿ ಹ will not follow.

O demon ! As such, I will perish due to your offence. You may do anything you deem appropriate. I will not follow you.
ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ಹಿ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಮಹಾಸತ್ತ್ವೋ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ৷৷3.39.22৷৷

ಅಪಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ನ ಭವೇದನ್ತಕೋಪಿ ಸಃ.


ರಾಮಶ್ಚ Rama also, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ brilliant, ಮಹಾಸತ್ತ್ವ: very powerful, ಮಹಾಬಲಃ very strong, ಸಃ he, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಲೋಕಸ್ಯ for the community of demons, ಅನ್ತಕಃ god of death, ನ ಭವೇದಪಿ not be.

Rama is brilliant, powerful and strong. I hope he will not be the god of death for the world of demons.
ಯದಿ ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾಹೇತೋರ್ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಗತಃ ಖರಃ৷৷3.39.23৷৷

ಅತಿವೃತ್ತೋ ಹತಃ ಪೂರ್ವಂ ರಾಮೇಣಾಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾ.

ಅತ್ರ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಂ ಕೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ವ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮಃ৷৷3.39.24৷৷


ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಗತಃ staying at Janasthana, ಖರಃ Khara, ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾಹೇತೋಃ for the sake of Surpanakha, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ earlier, ಅತಿವೃತ್ತಃ a person who exceeded his limits, ಅಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾ by one who can accomplish a work easily, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಹತಃ slain, ಯದಿ if, ಅತ್ರ here, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's,
ವ್ಯತಿಕ್ರಮಃ violation, ಕಃ what, ಯಥಾತತ್ತ್ವಮ್ truly, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell me.

For the sake of Surpanakha, Khara of Janasthana committed excesses and got killed by Rama who can accomplish things with ease.Tell me truly if Rama did violate anything here.
ಇದಂ ವಚೋ ಬನ್ಧುಹಿತಾರ್ಥಿನಾಮಯಾ ಯಥೋಚ್ಯಮಾನಂ ಯದಿ ನಾಭಿಪತ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ.

ಸಬಾನ್ಧವಸ್ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ ಜೀವಿತಂ ರಣೇ ಹತೋದ್ಯ ರಾಮೇಣ ಶರೈರಜಿಹ್ಮಗೈಃ৷৷3.39.25৷৷


ಬನ್ಧುಹಿತಾರ್ಥಿನಾ one seeking the welfare of relations, ಮಯಾ by myself, ಉಚ್ಯಮಾನಮ್ being spoken, ವಚಃ word, ಯಥಾ as, ನ no, ಅಭಿಪತ್ಯಸೇ ಯದಿ you do not follow, ಸಬಾನ್ಧವಃ with all relations, ಅದ್ಯ now, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಅಜಿಹ್ಮಗೈಃ that which moves straight, ಶರೈಃ with darts, ಹತಃ you are slayed, ರಣೇ in war, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ತ್ಯಕ್ಷಯಸಿ you will give up.

If you do not follow my advice given for the welfare of our kith and kin, O Ravana, you are killed today. With your relations you will succumb to his straight-moving arrows.
