[Rama and Lakshmana kill Viradha -- Viradha narrates his story and ascends to heaven.]

హ్రియమాణౌ తు తౌ దృష్ట్వా వైదేహీ రామలక్ష్మణౌ.

ఉచ్చైస్స్వరేణ చుక్రోశ ప్రగృహ్య సుమహాజాభుజౌ৷৷3.4.1৷৷


వైదేహీ Sita, ప్రగృహ్య holding, హ్రియమాణౌ the two being abducted, సుమహాభుజౌ two huge arms, రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, దృష్ట్వా seeing, ఉచ్చై స్వరేణ at the top of her voice, చుక్రోశ shouted.

Seeing those two mighty-armed Rama and Lakshmana being carried away by Viradha, Sita started crying loudly:
ఏష దాశరథీ రామః సత్యవాన్ శీలవాన్ శుచిః.

రక్షసా రౌద్రరూపేణ హ్రియతే సహలక్ష్మణః৷৷3.4.2৷৷


సత్యవాన్ truthful , శీలవాన్ of good conduct, శుచిః pure, ఏషః this person, దాశరథిః son of Dasaratha, రామః Rama, సహలక్ష్మణః with Lakshmana, రౌద్రరూపేణ dreadful in appearance, రక్షసా by The demon, హ్రియతే is whisked away.

మామృకా భక్షయిష్యన్తి శార్దూలాద్వీపినస్తథా.

మాం హరోత్సృజ కాకుత్స్థౌ నమస్తే రాక్షసోత్తమ৷৷3.4.3৷৷


మామ్ me, ఋకా wild bears, తథా in the same way, శార్దూలాద్వీపినః tigers and panthers, భక్షయిష్యన్తి will eat me, రాక్షసోత్తమ O best of demons, మామ్ me, హర take away, కాకుత్స్థౌ Rama and Lakshmana, ఉత్సృజ spare them, తే to you, నమః I salute.

The wild bears, tigers and panthers will eat me up here. O best among demons, pray take me and leave both the Kakutsthas.
తస్యాస్తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా వైదేహ్యా రామలక్ష్మణౌ.

వేగం ప్రచక్రతుర్వీరౌ వధే తస్య దురాత్మనః৷৷3.4.4৷৷


వీరౌ heroic, రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, తస్యాః వైదేహ్యాః that Sita's, తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, దురాత్మనః of the wicked one, తస్య his, వధే to kill, వేగమ్ haste, ప్రచక్రతుః began.

On hearing those words of Sita, both the heroes, Rama and Lakshmana hastened to kill the wicked Viradha.
తస్య రౌద్రస్య సౌమిత్రిః సవ్యం బాహుం బభఞ్జ హ.

రామస్తు దక్షిణం బాహుం తరసా తస్య రక్షసః৷৷3.4.5৷৷


సౌమిత్రిః Lakshmana, రౌద్రస్య of that dreadful demon తస్య his, సవ్యం బాహుమ్ left shoulder, బభఞ్జ హ broke down, రామః Rama, తు too, తస్య రక్షసః that demon's, దక్షిణమ్ right, బాహుమ్ shoulder, తరసా quickly.

Lakshmana quickly broke the left and Rama the right shoulder of that dreadful demon.
స భగ్నబాహుస్సవిగ్నో నిపపాతాశు రాక్షసః.

ధరణ్యాం మేఘసఙ్కాశో వజ్రభిన్న ఇవాచలః৷৷3.4.6৷৷


భగ్నబాహుః broken shoulders, మేఘ సఙ్కాశః resembling cloud, సః he, సంవిగ్నః anxious, రాక్షసః demon, నిపపాతః fell down, వజ్రభిన్నః split by a thunderbolt, అచలః ఇవ like a mountain, ఆశు fell at once, ధరణ్యామ్ on the ground.

With both shoulders broken, the demon, looking like a cloud (huge and dark) fell at once on the ground like a mountain split by a thunderbolt.
ముష్టిభిర్జానుభిః పద్భిః సూదయన్తౌ తు రాక్షసమ్.

ఉద్యమ్యోద్యమ్య చాప్యేనం స్థణ్డిలే నిష్పిపేషతుః৷৷3.4.7৷৷


రాక్షసమ్ to the demon, ముష్టిభిః with fists, జానుభిః with knees, పద్భి: with feet, సూదయన్తౌ striking, ఏనమ్ him, ఉద్యమ్యోద్యమ్య by lifting him again and again, స్థణ్డిలే on the bare ground, నిష్పిపేషతుః pulverized .

Striking the demon with fists, knees and feet, both of them smit him on the bare ground and pulverized him.
స విద్ధో బహుభిర్బాణైః ఖఙ్గాభ్యాం చ పరిక్షతః.

నిష్పిష్టో బహుధా భూమౌ న మమార స రాక్షసః৷৷3.4.8৷৷


బహుభిః by many, బాణైః by arrows, విద్ధః pierced, ఖఙ్గాభ్యామ్ with two swords, పరిక్షతః wounded, బహుధా in many ways, భూమౌ on the ground, నిష్పిష్టః pulverized, సః రాక్షసః that demon, న మమార was not killed.

Although pierced by arrows, and wounded by the two swords, and pulverized on the ground, the demon did not die.
తం ప్రేక్ష్య రామః సుభృశమవధ్యమచలోపమమ్.

భయేష్వభయదశ్శ్రీమానిదం వచనమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.4.9৷৷


భయేషు from fear, అభయదః guaranter of safety, (who promises deliverance from fear), శ్రీమాన్ illustrious, రామః Rama, అచలోపమమ్ mountain-like, తమ్ him, సుభృశమ్ very much, అవధ్యమ్ could not be killed, ప్రేక్ష్య after seeing, ఇదమ్ these, వచనమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Seeing the mountain-like Viradha not dying though seriously wounded, illustrious Rama, guaranter of safety from fear said to Lakshmana:
తపసా పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర! రాక్షసోయం న శక్యతే.

శస్త్రేణ యుధి నిర్జేతుం రాక్షసం నిఖనావహే৷৷3.4.10৷৷


పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర! O tiger among men, తపసా by penance, అయం రాక్షసః this demon, యుధి in war, శస్త్రేణ by weapons, నిర్జేతుమ్ to conquer, న శక్యతే is not possible, రాక్షసమ్ this demon, నిఖనావహే shall bury him.

O Lakshmana, best among men, this demon by virtue of his penance cannot be killed with any weapon in war. Therefore, let us bury him.
కుఞ్జరస్యేవ రౌద్రస్య రాక్షసస్యాస్య లక్ష్మణ.

వనేస్మిన్ సుమహచ్ఛ్వభ్రం ఖన్యతాం రౌద్రవర్చసః৷৷3.4.11৷৷


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, రౌద్రస్య of the dreadful one, అస్య రక్షసః of this demon, కుఞ్జరస్యేవ like an elephant, రౌద్రవర్చసః one who emits a fearful glow, అస్మిన్ in this, వనే forest, సుమహత్ very great, శ్వభ్రమ్ a pit, ఖన్యతామ్ dig.

Dig a deep pit to bury this demon, dreadful like an elephant and emitting a fearful glow.
ఇత్యుక్త్వా లక్ష్మణం రామః ప్రదరః ఖన్యతామితి.

తస్థౌ విరాధమాక్రమ్య కణ్ఠే పాదేన వీర్యవాన్৷৷3.4.12৷৷


వీర్యవాన్ courageous one, రామః Rama, లక్ష్మణమ్ to Lakshmana, ఇతి thus, ప్రదరః crevice, ఖన్యతామ్ may be dug up, ఇతి thus, ఉక్త్వా having said, విరాధమ్ Viradha, పాదేన with his foot, కణ్ఠే on his neck, ఆక్రమ్య holding firmly there, తస్థౌ stood.

Courageous Rama standing there put his foot firmly on the neck of Viradha and said to Lakshmana,' Dig up a crevice'.
తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా రాఘవేణోక్తం రాక్షసః ప్రశ్రితం వచః.

ఇదం ప్రోవాచ కాకుత్థ్సం విరాధః పురుషర్షభమ్৷৷3.4.13৷৷


రాక్షసః the demon, విరాధః Viradha, రాఘవేణ by Rama, ఉక్తమ్ instructed, తత్ that, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, పురుషర్షభమ్ best among men, కాకుత్థ్సమ్ to Lakshmana, ఇదమ్ thus, ప్రశ్రితమ్ humble, వచః words, ప్రోవాచ uttered.

When the demon Viradha heard Rama saying so, he said these humble words to the scion of the Kakutsthas and the best of men :
హతోస్మి పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర! శక్రతుల్యబలేన వై.

మయా తు పూర్వం త్వం మోహాన్న జ్ఞాతః పురుషర్షభ৷৷3.4.14৷৷


పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర! O tiger among men, శక్రతుల్యబలేన equal to Indra in prowess, హతః అస్మి I am killed, పురుషర్షభ bull among men, మయా by me, మోహాత్ due to delusion, త్వమ్ you, పూర్వమ్ earlier, న జ్ఞాతః was not realised.

You have killed me, O Rama, a tiger among men. You are equal to Indra in prowess. O best of men, out of delusion I could not recognise you earlier.
కౌసల్యాసుప్రజా రామ తాతస్త్వం విదితో మయా.

వైదేహీ చ మహాభాగా లక్ష్మణశ్చ మహాయశాః৷৷3.4.15৷৷


తాత O dear one, త్వమ్ you, కౌసల్యాసుప్రజాః the good son of Kausalya, రామః Rama, విదితః are known now, మహాభాగా a great lady, వైదేహీ చ Sita too, మహాయశాః a man of great fame, లక్ష్మణశ్చ and Lakshmana too.

O dear Rama, I know now you are the blessed son of Kausalya, Sita is a noble lady and a glorious soul.
అభిశాపాదహం ఘోరాం ప్రవిష్టో రాక్షసీం తనుమ్.

తుమ్బురుర్నామ గన్ధర్వః శప్తో వైశ్రవణేన హ৷৷3.4.16৷৷


అహమ్ I, అభిశాపాత్ by a curse, ఘోరామ్ this terrible, రాక్షసీమ్ demoniac, తనుమ్ body, ప్రవిష్టః I have entered, వైశ్రవణేన by Kubera, శప్తః I am cursed, తుమ్బురుః నామ by name Tumburu, గన్ధర్వః celestial musician.

I am Tumburu by name, a celestial singer of the gandharva clan. Cursed by Kubera, I got this dreadful body of a demon.
ప్రసాద్యమానశ్చ మయా సోబ్రవీన్మాం మహాయశాః.

యదా దాశరథీ రామస్త్వాం వధిష్యతి సంయుగే.

తదా ప్రకృతిమాపన్నో భవాన్స్వర్గం గమిష్యతి৷৷3.4.17৷৷


మయా by me, ప్రసాద్యమానః while being appeased, మహాయశా: illustrious, సః he, మామ్ me, అబ్రవీత్ said, దాశరథిః son of Dasaratha, రామః Rama, యదా when, త్వామ్ you, సంయుగే at war, వధిష్యతి will kill, తదా then, ప్రకృతిమ్ your original form, ఆపన్నః you will get back, భవాన్ you, స్వర్గమ్ to heaven, గమిష్యతి you will go.

When I appealed to him, that lord of great fame (Kubera) said that I would get back my original form and ascend to heaven when Rama, son of Dasaratha, would kill me in a duel.
అనుపస్థీయమానో మాం స క్రుద్ధో వ్యాజహార హ.

ఇతి వైశ్రవణో రాజా రమ్భాసక్తమువాచ హ৷৷3.4.18৷৷


సః that, అనుపస్థీయమానః not being attended to, క్రుద్ధః angry, మామ్ me, వ్యాజహార said, రాజా king, వైశ్రవణః Kubera, రమ్భాసక్తమ్ passionately attached to Rambha, ఇతి like this, ఉవాచ హ cursed.

When king Kubera saw me absent (from duty) as I was infatuated with Rambha, he got angry and cursed me.
తవ ప్రసాదాన్ముక్తోహమిహశాపాత్సుదారుణాత్.

భువనం స్వం గమిష్యామి స్వస్తి వోస్తు పరన్తప৷৷3.4.19৷৷


తవ your, ప్రసాదాత్ by grace blessing, సుదారుణాత్ from the dreadful form, అభిశాపాత్ from the curse, పరన్తప scorcher of enemies అహమ్ I, ముక్తః am relieved, స్వమ్ my own, భువనమ్ abode, గమిష్యామి I will go, వః to you both, స్వస్తి wish you well, అస్తు may be.

O scorcher of enemies! by your grace I am rid of the curse. Delivered from my dreadful form, I will now go to my world. May both of you fare well.
ఇతో వసతి ధర్మాత్మా శరభఙ్గః ప్రతాపవాన్৷৷3.4.20৷৷

అధ్యర్ధయోజనే తాత మహర్షిస్సూర్యసన్నిభః.

తం క్షిప్రమధిగచ్ఛ త్వం స తే శ్రేయోభిధాస్యతి৷৷3.4.21৷৷


తాత O dear, ఇతః from here, అధ్యర్ధయోజనే one and half yojanas away, (a yojana = about 8 miles) ధర్మాత్మా a righteous self, ప్రతాపవాన్ of great power, సూర్యసన్నిభః comparable to the Sun, శరభఙ్గః Sarabhanga, మహర్షిః sage, వసతి lives, త్వమ్ you, క్షిప్రమ్ quickly, తమ్ him, అధిగచ్ఛ approach, సః he, తే to you, శ్రేయః welfare, అభిధాస్యతి bestow on you.

O dear, there lives Sarabhanga, a righteous sage, comparable to the Sun, at a distance of one and a half yojanas from here. Go to him at once. He will bless you with your well-being.
అవటే చాపి మాం రామ ప్రక్షిప్య కుశలీ వ్రజ.

రక్షసాం గతసత్త్వానామేష ధర్మస్ససనాతనః.

అవటే యే నిధీయన్తే తేషాం లోకాస్సనాతనాః৷৷3.4.22৷৷


రామ Rama, మామ్ me, అవటే in the pit, ప్రక్షిప్య on burying, కుశలీ proper, వ్రజ you may go, గతసత్త్వామ్ who are dead, రక్షసామ్ of the demons, ఏషః this one, సనాతనః eternal, ధర్మః justice, యే those, అవటే వినిక్షిప్యన్తే buried in a pit, తేషామ్ to them, సనాతనాః eternal, లోకాః in other worlds (heaven)

Bury me in the pit, O Rama, and proceed happily. This is a great tradition for the dead
demons. Those who are buried in the pit attain heaven.
ఏవముక్త్వా తు కాకుత్థ్సం విరాధశ్శరపీడితః.

బభూవ స్వర్గసమ్ప్రాప్తో న్యస్తదేహో మహాబలః৷৷3.4.23৷৷


మహాబలః mighty strong, విరాధః Viradha, కాకుత్థ్సమ్ to the scion of the Kakutstha race, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్త్వా having said, శరపీడితః hit by the arrows, న్యస్తదేహః casting his body, స్వర్గసమ్ప్రాప్తః బభూవ attained heaven.

Having said so to Rama, the mighty Viradha, hit by the arrows left his body and attained heaven.
తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా రాఘవో వాక్యం లక్ష్మణం వ్యాదిదేశ హ.

కుఞ్జరస్యేవ రౌద్రస్య రాక్షసస్యాస్య లక్ష్మణ!৷৷3.4.24৷৷

వనేస్మిన్ సుమహచ్ఛ్వభ్రం ఖన్యతాం రౌదకర్మణః.

ఇత్యుక్త్వా లక్ష్మణం రామః ప్రదరః ఖన్యతామితి.

తస్థౌ విరాధమాక్రమ్య కణ్ఠే పాదేన వీర్యవాన్৷৷3.4.25৷৷


రాఘవః Rama, తత్ వాక్యమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా heard, లక్ష్మణమ్ Lakshmana, వ్యాదిదేశ ordered, అస్యరాక్షసస్య for this demon, రౌద్రస్య of the dreadful, కుఞ్జరస్యేవ like an elephant వనేస్మిన్ in this forest, రౌద్రకర్మణః of dreadful acts, సుమహత్ wide, శ్వభ్రః pit, ఖన్యతామ్ dig, రామః Rama, లక్ష్మణమ్ Lakshmana, ప్రదరః a pit, ఖన్యతామ్ dig, ఇతి in this way, వీర్యవాన్ valiant, పాదేన by his foot, కణ్ఠే on the neck, విరాధమ్ to Viradha, ఆక్రమ్య occupying, తస్థౌ stood firmly.

When Rama heard those words, he said, O Lakshmana! dig for this elephant-like demon of dreadful acts, a big pit. Having said so the mighty Rama stood firmly stamping the neck of Viradha with his foot.
తతః ఖనిత్రమాదాయ లక్ష్మణశ్శ్వభ్రముత్తమమ్.

అఖనత్పార్శ్వతస్తస్య విరాధస్య మహాత్మనః৷৷3.4.26৷৷


తతః thereafter, లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, ఖనిత్రమ్ spade, ఆదాయ fetched, మహాత్మనః of the great soul, తస్యవిరాధస్య that Viradha's, పార్శ్వత: by his side, ఉత్తమమ్ sufficiently big, శ్వభ్రమ్ pit, అఖనత్ dug.

Then Lakshmana fetched a spade and dug a sufficiently big pit by the side of the great soul Viradha.
తం ముక్తకణ్ఠంనిక్షిప్య శఙ్కుకర్ణం మహాస్వనమ్.

విరాధం ప్రాక్షిపచ్ఛ్వభ్రే నదన్తం భైరవస్వనమ్৷৷3.4.27৷৷


ముక్తకణ్ఠనిక్షిప్య released pressure on the neck, మహాస్వనమ్ with loud voice, శఙ్కుకర్ణమ్ of pointed ears as an iron peg, భైరవస్వనమ్ fearful sound నదన్తమ్ making, తం విరాధమ్ that Viradha, శ్వభ్రే in the pit, ప్రాక్షిపత్ dropped.

Rama took his foot off Viradha's neck and dropped his body with pointed ears into the pit while Viradha was groaning fearfully৷৷
తమాహవే దారుణమాశువిక్రమౌ స్థిరావుభౌ సంయతి రామలక్ష్మణౌ.

ముదాన్వితౌ చిక్షిపతుర్భయావహం నదన్తముత్క్షిప్య బిలే తు రాక్షసమ్৷৷3.4.28৷৷


ఆశువిక్రమౌ both warriors of quick and brave action, సంయతి in this battle, స్థిరౌ stable, రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, ఉభౌ both, ముదా joy, అన్వితౌ both endowed, ఆహవే in the war, దారుణమ్ dreadful, భయావహమ్ frightening, నదన్తమ్ was roaring తం రాక్షసమ్ that demon, బలేన forcefully, ఉత్క్షిప్య lifted, చిక్షిపతుః both of them threw him down .

Rama and Lakshmana, stable and firm, brave and quick, together lifted the body of Viradha who was fierce in battle and roaring and forcibly threw it into the pit with joy.
అవధ్యతాం ప్రేక్ష్య మహాసురస్య తౌ శితేన శస్త్రేణ తదా నరర్షభౌ.

సమర్థ్య చాత్యర్థవిశారదావుభౌ బిలే విరాధస్య వధం ప్రచక్రతుః৷৷3.4.29৷৷


తదా then, నరర్షభౌ both bulls among men, అత్యర్థవిశారదౌ very efficient, తౌ ఉభౌ both of them, శితేన with sharp, శస్త్రేణ weapons, మహాసురస్య of that mighty demon, తస్య విరాధస్య of that Viradha, అవధ్యతామ్ not to be killed in any other way, ప్రేక్ష్య having seen, సమర్థ్య after reflecting over the issue, బిలే in hole, వధం killed, ప్రచక్రతుః both undertook.

The two princes, bulls among men, who were adept in archery saw that the great demon could not be killed by any other means. They reflected over the issue and undertook the task of killing him with sharp weapons and buried him in a pit.
స్వయం విరాధేన హి మృత్యురాత్మనః ప్రసహ్య రామేణ యథార్థమీప్సితః.

నివేదితః కాననచారిణా స్వయం న మే వధః శస్త్రకృతో భవేదితి৷৷3.4.30৷৷


విరాధేన by Viradha, స్వయమ్ himself, ఆత్మనః for him, మృత్యుః death, యథార్థమ్ truly, ప్రసహ్య forcibly, రామేణ by Rama, ఈప్సితః wished to, కాననచారిణా one by the forest-ranger, మే for me, శస్త్ర కృతః by the weapons, వధః kill, న భవేత్ not possible for you, ఇతి thus, స్వయమ్ he himself, నివేదితః was revealed.

Rama deliberately wanted to kill Viradha with weapons. Viradha the forest-ranger himself revealed that it was not possible to kill him with weapons and asked Rama to bury him in a pit.
తదేవ రామేణ నిశమ్య భాషితం కృతా మతిస్తస్య బిలప్రవేశనే.

బిలం చ రామేణాతిబలేన రక్షసా ప్రవేశ్యమానేన వనం వినాదితమ్৷৷3.4.31৷৷


తత్ then, భాషితమేవ words spoken, నిశమ్య hearing, రామేణ by Rama, తస్య his, బిలప్రవేశనే putting him in the pit, మతిః mind, కృతా determined, బిలమ్ pit, ప్రవేశ్యమానేన while placing, అతిబలేన mighty, రామేణ by Rama, రక్షసా by the demons, వనమ్ forest, వినాదితమ్ echoed.

While Rama, who had made up his mind after hearing him, was putting the mighty demon in the pit, the forest rang with his roar.
ప్రహృష్టరూపావివ రామలక్ష్మణౌ విరాధముర్వ్యా ప్రదరే నిహత్య తౌ.

ననన్దతుర్వీతభయౌ మహావనే శిలాభిరన్తర్దధతుశ్చ రాక్షసమ్৷৷3.4.32৷৷


ప్రహృష్టరూపావివ both joyful, రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, తం విరాధమ్ that Viradha, ఉర్వ్యాః earth's, ప్రదరే in the crevice, నిహత్య after killing, వీతభయౌ both fearlessly, మహావనే in the great forest, ననన్దతుః both rejoiced, రాక్షసమ్ to the demon, శిలాభిః with rocks, అన్తర్దధతుశ్చ covered him.

Rama and Lakshmana were happy to consign Viradha's body to the pit after killing him. They filled the pit with rocks in the great forest without fear.
తతస్తు తౌ కాఞ్చనచిత్రకార్ముకౌ నిహత్య రక్షః పరిగృహ్య మైథిలీమ్.

విజహ్రతు స్తౌ ముదితౌ మహావనే దివి స్థితౌ చన్ద్రదివాకరావివ৷৷3.4.33৷৷


తతః then, కాఞ్చనచిత్రకార్ముకౌ with brilliant bows adorned with molten gold, తౌ both of them, రక్షః the demon, నిహత్య killing, మైథిలీమ్ Sita, పరిగృహ్య taking, మహావనే in that huge forest, ముదితౌ joyfully, దివి in the sky, స్థితౌ remaining stable, తౌ both Rama and Lakshmana, చన్ద్రదివాకరావివ like the Moon and Sun, విజహ్రతుః wandered.

With Viradha killed, they, accompanied by Sita, wandered happily in the dense forest, carrying their brilliant bows adorned with molten gold. They looked like Moon and Sun shining in the sky.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే చతుర్థస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
