[Maricha's admonitions and warnings to Ravana]
ಆಜ್ಞಪ್ತೋ ರಾಜವದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲಂ ನಿಶಾಚರಃ.

ನಿಶಾಚರಃ demon, ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲಮ್ adversely, ರಾಜವತ್ royal, ಆಜ್ಞಪ್ತಃ commanded, ಮಾರೀಚಃ Maricha, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಿಪಮ್ to the king of the demons, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
At this royal command which was against his interest Maracha used harsh words to the demon-king:
ಕೇನಾಯಮುಪದಿಷ್ಟಸ್ತೇ ವಿನಾಶಃ ಪಾಪಕರ್ಮಣಾ.
ಸಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಸರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಸ್ಯ ಸಾಮಾತ್ಯಸ್ಯ ನಿಶಾಚರ৷৷3.41.2৷৷

ನಿಶಾಚರ Ravana, ಸಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ with your sons, ಸರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಸ್ಯ with the kingdom, ಸಾಮಾತ್ಯಸ್ಯ with the ministers, ತೇ to you, ಅಯಮ್ this, ವಿನಾಶಃ destruction, ಪಾಪಕರ್ಮಣಾ sinful action, ಕೇನ by whom, ಉಪದಿಷ್ಟಃ advised.
Who is that sinner who has given you this advice which will spell destruction on you, your sons, your kingdom and your ministers ?
ಕಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಸುಖಿನಾ ರಾಜನ್ನಾಭಿನನ್ದತಿ ಪಾಪಕೃತ್.
ಕೇನೇದಮುಪದಿಷ್ಟಂ ತೇ ಮೃತ್ಯುದ್ವಾರಮುಪಾಯತಃ৷৷3.41.3৷৷

ರಾಜನ್ king, ಕಃ who, ಪಾಪಕೃತ್ sinner, ಸುಖಿನಾ happy one, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ನಾಭಿನನ್ದತಿ not tolerate, ಮೃತ್ಯುದ್ವಾರಮ್ death gate, ಇದಮ್ this, ಕೇನ by whom, ತೇ you, ಉಪಾಯತಃ cunningly, ಉಪದಿಷ್ಟಮ್ advised.
Which sinner is not able to see you happy? O king! by whom is this gate of death
shown to you cunningly?
ಶತ್ರವಸ್ತವ ಸುವ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಹೀನವೀರ್ಯಾ ನಿಶಾಚರಾಃ.
ಇಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ವಿನಶ್ಯನ್ತಮುಪರುದ್ಧಂ ಬಲೀಯಸಾ৷৷3.41.4৷৷

ತವ your, ಶತ್ರವಃ enemies, ಹೀನವೀರ್ಯಾಃ deprived of valour, ನಿಶಾಚರಾಃ demons, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಬಲೀಯಸಾ by a strong person, ಉಪರುದ್ಧಮ್ obstructed, ವಿನಶ್ಯನ್ತಮ್ being destroyed, ಇಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ they like, ಸುವ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ it is very clear,
This is clear that your enemy demons are now powerless. Hence they want you to be engaged with a stronger power and be destroyed.
ಕೇನೇದಮುಪದಿಷ್ಟಂ ತೇ ಕ್ಷುದ್ರೇಣಾಹಿತವಾದಿನಾ.

ನಿಶಾಚರ O nightwalker (Ravana), ಯಃ he who, ತ್ವಾಮ್ to you, ಸ್ವಕೃತೇನ by your own action, ನಶ್ಯನ್ತಮ್ being destroyed, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ wishes, ಕ್ಷುದ್ರೇಣ by a mean fellow, ಅಹಿತವಾದಿನಾ one who gives wrong advice, ಕೇನ by whom, ಇದಮ್ this, ತೇ to you, ಉಪದಿಷ್ಟಮ್ advised.
O Ravana! by which mean fellow is this advice given against your welfare? Who wants you to be destroyed by your own action.
ವಧ್ಯಾಃ ಖಲು ನ ಹನ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಸಚಿವಾಸ್ತವ ರಾವಣ.
ಯೇ ತ್ವಾಮುತ್ಪಥಮಾರೂಢಂ ನ ನಿಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ತಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷3.41.6৷৷
ಯೇ ತ್ವಾಮುತ್ಪಥಮಾರೂಢಂ ನ ನಿಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ತಿ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷3.41.6৷৷
ರಾವಣ Ravana, ಉತ್ಪಥಮ್ wrong path, ಆರೂಢಮ್ you ascended, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಯೇ those, ಸರ್ವಶಃ by all means, ನ ನಿಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ತಿ do not prevent, ತವ ಸಚಿವಾಃ your ministers, ವಧ್ಯಾಃ ಖಲು deserve to be slayed, ನ ಹನ್ಯನ್ತೇ they are not slain?
O Ravana! the ministers should have prevented you by all means from adopting this wrong path. Since they have not done so, they deserve to be spain.
ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ ಕಾಮವೃತ್ತೋ ಹಿ ರಾಜಾ ಕಾಪಥಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.
ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಸ್ಸರ್ವಥಾ ಸದಭಿರ್ನ ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯೋ ನಿಗೃಹ್ಯಸೇ৷৷3.41.7৷৷
ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಸ್ಸರ್ವಥಾ ಸದಭಿರ್ನ ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯೋ ನಿಗೃಹ್ಯಸೇ৷৷3.41.7৷৷
ಕಾಮವೃತ್ತಃ lustful, ಕಾಪಥಮ್ evil path, ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ resorted to, ರಾಜಾ king, ಸದ್ಭಿ: by the good people, ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ by ministers, ಸರ್ವಥಾ always, ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಃ ಹಿ should be stopped, ನಿಗ್ರಾಹ್ಯಃ prevent, ನ ನಿಗೃಹ್ಯಸೇ not prevented.
Good ministrers should always prevent a lustful king from taking resourse to an evil path. Why were you not stopped, even though you deserve to be checked.
ಧರ್ಮಮರ್ಥಂ ಚ ಕಾಮಂ ಚ ಯಶಶ್ಚ ಜಯತಾಂ ವರ.
ಸ್ವಾಮಿಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ಸಚಿವಾಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತಿ ನಿಶಾಚರ৷৷3.41.8৷৷

ಜಯತಾಮ್ among the successful, ವರ best, ನಿಶಾಚರ demons, Ravana, ಸಚಿವಾಃ ministers, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ righteousness, ಅರ್ಥಂ ಚ prosperity, ಕಾಮಂ ಚ and pleasures, ಯಶಶ್ಚ and fame, ಸ್ವಾಮಿಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ by the grace of the king, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತಿ attain.
O Ravana ! the best among the successful ministers attain piety, prosperity, pleasures and fame by the grace of the king.
ವಿಪರ್ಯಯೇ ತು ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ವ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಭವತಿ ರಾವಣ.
ವ್ಯಸನಂ ಸ್ವಾಮಿವೈಗುಣ್ಯಾತ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತೀತರೇ ಜನಾಃ৷৷3.41.9৷৷
ವ್ಯಸನಂ ಸ್ವಾಮಿವೈಗುಣ್ಯಾತ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತೀತರೇ ಜನಾಃ৷৷3.41.9৷৷
ರಾವಣ Ravana, ವಿಪರ್ಯಯೇ if it be otherwise, ತತ್ then, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything (the four attainments), ವ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಭವತಿ will become useless, ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ವೈಗುಣ್ಯಾತ್ by the vices of the king, ಇತರೇ ಜನಾಃ others, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ calamity, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತಿ suffer.
Otherwise evrything will become useless, O Ravana ! Others will suffer calamities on account of their master's vices.
ರಾಜಮೂಲೋ ಹಿ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ ಜಯಶ್ಚ ಜಯತಾಂ ವರ.
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ವವಸ್ಥಾಸು ರಕ್ಷಿತವ್ಯಾ ನರಾಧಿಪಾಃ৷৷3.41.10৷৷
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಸರ್ವಾಸ್ವವಸ್ಥಾಸು ರಕ್ಷಿತವ್ಯಾ ನರಾಧಿಪಾಃ৷৷3.41.10৷৷
ಜಯತಾಮ್ among the victorious, ವರ best one, ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ righteousness, ಜಯಶ್ಚ victory, ರಾಜಮೂಲ: the king is the root, ಹಿ indeed, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಸರ್ವಾಸು in all, ಅವಸ್ಥಾಸು stages, ನರಾಧಿಪಾಃ kings, ರಕ್ಷಿತವ್ಯಾಃ deserve to be protected.
O Ravana, the best among the victorious! indeed the king is at the root of righteousness and victory.Therefore, the king should be protected by all at every stage.
ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪಾಲಯಿತುಂ ಶಕ್ಯಂ ನ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೇನ ನಿಶಾಚರ.
ನ ಚಾಪಿ ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲೇನ ನಾವಿನೀತೇನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ৷৷3.41.11৷৷
ನ ಚಾಪಿ ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲೇನ ನಾವಿನೀತೇನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ৷৷3.41.11৷৷
ರಾಕ್ಷಸ demons, ನಿಶಾಚರ nightwalker, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೇನ by a rude one, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಪಾಲಯಿತುಮ್ to rule, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಮ್ is not possible, ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲೇನ by a hostile one, ನ not, ಅವಿನೀತೇನ by an impolite one, ನ not.
O night-walking demon ! a kingdom cannnot be governed by a king who is rude or hostile or impolite.
ಯೇ ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮನ್ತ್ರಾಸ್ಸಚಿವಾ ಭಜ್ಯನ್ತೇ ಸಹ ತೇನ ವೈ.
ವಿಷಮೇ ತುರಗಾ ಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರಾ ಮನ್ದಸಾರಥಯೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷3.41.12৷৷
ವಿಷಮೇ ತುರಗಾ ಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರಾ ಮನ್ದಸಾರಥಯೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷3.41.12৷৷
ಯೇ whoever, ಸಚಿವಾಃ ministers, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮನ್ತ್ರಾಃ who adopt improper strategies, ಮನ್ದಸಾರಥಯಃ when the charioteer is driving slow, ಶೀಘ್ರಾಃ swiftly, ತುರಗಾಃ horses, ವಿಷಮೇ ಯಥಾ on a rugged surface, likewise, ತೇನ by that, ಸಹ along with, ಭಜ್ಯನ್ತೇ ವೈ are overthrown.
Ministers who adopt improper strategies go down along with the king just like swift horses driven by a slow charioteer on a rugged terrain.
ಬಹವಸ್ಸಾಧವೋ ಲೋಕೇ ಯುಕ್ತಾ ಧರ್ಮಮನುಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ.
ಪರೇಷಾಮಪರಾಧೇನ ವಿನಷ್ಟಾಸ್ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಾಃ৷৷3.41.13৷৷
ಪರೇಷಾಮಪರಾಧೇನ ವಿನಷ್ಟಾಸ್ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಾಃ৷৷3.41.13৷৷
ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಯುಕ್ತಾಃ engaged, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ rightful duty, ಅನುಷ್ಠಿತಾಃ following, ಬಹವಃ many, ಸಾಧವಃ pious, ಪರೇಷಾಮ್ of others, ಅಪರಾಧೇನ by their mistakes, ಸಪರಿಚ್ಛದಾಃ along with their kith and kin, ವಿನಷ್ಟಾಃ ruined.
Persons who walk the righteous path go down in this world along with their kith and kin due to the mistakes committed by others .
ಸ್ವಾಮಿನಾ ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲೇನ ಪ್ರಜಾಸ್ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೇನ ರಾವಣ.
ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾ ನ ವರ್ಧನ್ತೇ ಮೇಷಾ ಗೋಮಾಯುನಾ ಯಥಾ৷৷3.41.14৷৷
ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾ ನ ವರ್ಧನ್ತೇ ಮೇಷಾ ಗೋಮಾಯುನಾ ಯಥಾ৷৷3.41.14৷৷
ರಾವಣ Ravana, ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲೇನ by an unfavourable, ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣೇನ by a rude one, ಸ್ವಾಮಿನಾ by the master, ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾಃ protected, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ people, ಗೋಮಾಯುನಾ by a jackal, ಮೇಷಾಃ ಯಥಾ like sheep, ನ ವರ್ಧನ್ತೇ do not grow.
O Ravana, people who are ruled by a cruel and hostile king will not grow like the sheep protected by a jackal.
ಅವಶ್ಯಂ ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಸರ್ವೇ ರಾವಣ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ.
ಯೇಷಾಂ ತ್ವಂ ಕರ್ಕಶೋ ರಾಜಾ ದುರ್ಬುದ್ಧಿರಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷3.41.15৷৷
ಯೇಷಾಂ ತ್ವಂ ಕರ್ಕಶೋ ರಾಜಾ ದುರ್ಬುದ್ಧಿರಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷3.41.15৷৷
ರಾವಣ O Ravana, ಯೇಷಾಮ್ of whom, ಕರ್ಕಶಃ rude , ದುರ್ಬುದ್ಧಿ: evil-minded, ಅಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ having no control over the senses, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ರಾಜಾ king, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ demons, ಅವಶ್ಯಮ್ surely, ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ perish.
Under a rude, crooked king whose senses are not under his control the demons will surely perish.
ತದಿದಂ ಕಾಕತಾಲೀಯಂ ಘೋರಮಾಸಾದಿತಂ ಮಯಾ.
ಅತ್ರ ಕಿಂ ಶೋಚನೀಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಸಸೈನ್ಯೋ ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷3.41.16৷৷
ಅತ್ರ ಕಿಂ ಶೋಚನೀಯಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಸಸೈನ್ಯೋ ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷3.41.16৷৷
ಮಯಾ I, ಕಾಕತಾಲೀಯಮ್ accidental, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadful, ತತ್ that, ಇದಮ್ this, ಆಸಾದಿತಮ್ reached, ಅತ್ರ here, ಕಿಮ್ what, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಶೋಚನೀಯಃ deplorable, ಸಸೈನ್ಯಃ along with your army, ವಿನಶಿಷ್ಯಸಿ will perish.
I am faced with this dreadful disaster accidentally. You will not only be in a miserable state because of your misdeeds, you will perish along with your army.
ಮಾಂ ನಿಹತ್ಯ ತು ರಾಮಶ್ಚ ನ ಚಿರಾತ್ತ್ವಾಂ ವಧಿಷ್ಯತಿ.
ಅನೇನ ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯೋಸ್ಮಿ ಮ್ರಿಯೇಯಮರಿಣಾ ಹತಃ৷৷3.41.17৷৷

ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಾಮ್ me, ನಿಹತ್ಯ after killing, ನ ಚಿರಾತ್ soon, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ವಧಿಷ್ಯತಿ will kill, ಅರಿಣಾ by the enemy, ಹತಃ slayed, ಮ್ರಿಯೇಯಮ್ I will die, ಅನೇನ by this, ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಃ accomplished, ಅಸ್ಮಿ I will be.
Rama will kill you not long after killing me.Hence even if I die in the hands of the enemy, my desire will be fulfilled.
ದರ್ಶನಾದೇವ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಹತಂ ಮಾಮವಧಾರಯ.
ಆತ್ಮಾನಂ ಚ ಹತಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಹೃತ್ವಾ ಸೀತಾಂ ಸಬಾನ್ಧವಮ್৷৷3.41.18৷৷

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ದರ್ಶನಾದೇವ by mere sight, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಹತಮ್ a dead one, ಅವಧಾರಯ presume, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಹೃತ್ವಾ abducting, ಸಬಾನ್ಧವಮ್ along with your kith and kin, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ yourself, ಹತಮ್ killed, ವಿದ್ಧಿ understand.
Yu most understand that if I die at the very sight of Rama, you along with your relatives will perish with the abduction of Sita.
ಆನಯಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ಚೇತ್ಸೀತಾಮಾಶ್ರಮಾತ್ಸಹಿತೋ ಮಯಾ.
ನೈವತ್ವಮಸಿ ನಾಹಂ ಚ ನೈವ ಲಙ್ಕಾ ನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ৷৷3.41.19৷৷
ನೈವತ್ವಮಸಿ ನಾಹಂ ಚ ನೈವ ಲಙ್ಕಾ ನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ৷৷3.41.19৷৷
ಮಯಾ ಸಹಿತಃ along with me, ಆಶ್ರಮಾತ್ from the hermitage, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಆನಯಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ಚೇತ್ if you bring, ತ್ವಮ್ ನೈವ ಅಸಿ you will not survive, ಅಹಂ ಚ I also, ನ ಲಙ್ಕಾ nor Lanka, ನೈವ not, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ
demons, ನ not.
If you bring Sita from the hermitage with my assistance, know that none of us will survive-you nor I, nor Lanka , nor the demons.
ನಿವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಸ್ತು ಮಯಾ ಹಿತೈಷಿಣಾ ನ ಮೃಷ್ಯಸೇ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಿದಂ ನಿಶಾಚರ.
ಪರೇತಕಲ್ಪಾ ಹಿ ಗತಾಯುಷೋ ನರಾ ಹಿತಂ ನ ಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ತಿ ಸುಹೃದ್ಭಿರೀರಿತಮ್৷৷3.41.20৷৷

ನಿಶಾಚರ Ravana, ಹಿತೈಷಿಣಾ by your well-wisher, ಮಯಾ by me, ನಿವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಃ warned, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ನ ಮೃಷ್ಯಸೇ do not comprehend, ಗತಾಯುಷಃ men of reduced life span, ಪರೇತಕಲ್ಪಾಃ almost dead, ನರಾಃ people, ಸುಹೃದ್ಭಿ: by friends, ಈರಿತಮ್ told, ಹಿತಮ್ good advice, ನ ಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ತಿ ಹಿ not accept.
O Ravana, you do not understand this word of warning coming from your well-wisher. Men who are going to die do not heed the advice given by their friends.
