[Maricha's admonitions and warnings to Ravana]

ఆజ్ఞప్తో రాజవద్వాక్యం ప్రతికూలం నిశాచరః.

అబ్రవీత్పరుషం వాక్యం మారీచో రాక్షసాధిపమ్৷৷3.41.1৷৷


నిశాచరః demon, ప్రతికూలమ్ adversely, రాజవత్ royal, ఆజ్ఞప్తః commanded, మారీచః Maricha, రాక్షసాధిపమ్ to the king of the demons, పరుషమ్ harsh, వాక్యమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

At this royal command which was against his interest Maracha used harsh words to the demon-king:
కేనాయముపదిష్టస్తే వినాశః పాపకర్మణా.

సపుత్రస్య సరాష్ట్రస్య సామాత్యస్య నిశాచర৷৷3.41.2৷৷


నిశాచర Ravana, సపుత్రస్య with your sons, సరాష్ట్రస్య with the kingdom, సామాత్యస్య with the ministers, తే to you, అయమ్ this, వినాశః destruction, పాపకర్మణా sinful action, కేన by whom, ఉపదిష్టః advised.

Who is that sinner who has given you this advice which will spell destruction on you, your sons, your kingdom and your ministers ?
కస్త్వయా సుఖినా రాజన్నాభినన్దతి పాపకృత్.

కేనేదముపదిష్టం తే మృత్యుద్వారముపాయతః৷৷3.41.3৷৷


రాజన్ king, కః who, పాపకృత్ sinner, సుఖినా happy one, త్వయా by you, నాభినన్దతి not tolerate, మృత్యుద్వారమ్ death gate, ఇదమ్ this, కేన by whom, తే you, ఉపాయతః cunningly, ఉపదిష్టమ్ advised.

Which sinner is not able to see you happy? O king! by whom is this gate of death
shown to you cunningly?
శత్రవస్తవ సువ్యక్తం హీనవీర్యా నిశాచరాః.

ఇచ్ఛన్తి త్వాం వినశ్యన్తముపరుద్ధం బలీయసా৷৷3.41.4৷৷


తవ your, శత్రవః enemies, హీనవీర్యాః deprived of valour, నిశాచరాః demons, త్వామ్ you, బలీయసా by a strong person, ఉపరుద్ధమ్ obstructed, వినశ్యన్తమ్ being destroyed, ఇచ్ఛన్తి they like, సువ్యక్తమ్ it is very clear,

This is clear that your enemy demons are now powerless. Hence they want you to be engaged with a stronger power and be destroyed.
కేనేదముపదిష్టం తే క్షుద్రేణాహితవాదినా.

యస్త్వామిచ్ఛతి నశ్యన్తం స్వకృతేన నిశాచర৷৷3.41.5৷৷


నిశాచర O nightwalker (Ravana), యః he who, త్వామ్ to you, స్వకృతేన by your own action, నశ్యన్తమ్ being destroyed, ఇచ్ఛతి wishes, క్షుద్రేణ by a mean fellow, అహితవాదినా one who gives wrong advice, కేన by whom, ఇదమ్ this, తే to you, ఉపదిష్టమ్ advised.

O Ravana! by which mean fellow is this advice given against your welfare? Who wants you to be destroyed by your own action.
వధ్యాః ఖలు న హన్యన్తే సచివాస్తవ రావణ.

యే త్వాముత్పథమారూఢం న నిగృహ్ణన్తి సర్వశః৷৷3.41.6৷৷


రావణ Ravana, ఉత్పథమ్ wrong path, ఆరూఢమ్ you ascended, త్వామ్ you, యే those, సర్వశః by all means, న నిగృహ్ణన్తి do not prevent, తవ సచివాః your ministers, వధ్యాః ఖలు deserve to be slayed, న హన్యన్తే they are not slain?

O Ravana! the ministers should have prevented you by all means from adopting this wrong path. Since they have not done so, they deserve to be spain.
అమాత్యైః కామవృత్తో హి రాజా కాపథమాశ్రితః.

నిగ్రాహ్యస్సర్వథా సదభిర్న నిగ్రాహ్యో నిగృహ్యసే৷৷3.41.7৷৷


కామవృత్తః lustful, కాపథమ్ evil path, ఆశ్రితః resorted to, రాజా king, సద్భి: by the good people, అమాత్యైః by ministers, సర్వథా always, నిగ్రాహ్యః హి should be stopped, నిగ్రాహ్యః prevent, న నిగృహ్యసే not prevented.

Good ministrers should always prevent a lustful king from taking resourse to an evil path. Why were you not stopped, even though you deserve to be checked.
ధర్మమర్థం చ కామం చ యశశ్చ జయతాం వర.

స్వామిప్రసాదాత్సచివాః ప్రాప్నువన్తి నిశాచర৷৷3.41.8৷৷


జయతామ్ among the successful, వర best, నిశాచర demons, Ravana, సచివాః ministers, ధర్మమ్ righteousness, అర్థం చ prosperity, కామం చ and pleasures, యశశ్చ and fame, స్వామిప్రసాదాత్ by the grace of the king, ప్రాప్నువన్తి attain.

O Ravana ! the best among the successful ministers attain piety, prosperity, pleasures and fame by the grace of the king.
విపర్యయే తు తత్సర్వం వ్యర్థం భవతి రావణ.

వ్యసనం స్వామివైగుణ్యాత్ప్రాప్నువన్తీతరే జనాః৷৷3.41.9৷৷


రావణ Ravana, విపర్యయే if it be otherwise, తత్ then, సర్వమ్ everything (the four attainments), వ్యర్థం భవతి will become useless, స్వామి వైగుణ్యాత్ by the vices of the king, ఇతరే జనాః others, వ్యసనమ్ calamity, ప్రాప్నువన్తి suffer.

Otherwise evrything will become useless, O Ravana ! Others will suffer calamities on account of their master's vices.
రాజమూలో హి ధర్మశ్చ జయశ్చ జయతాం వర.

తస్మాత్సర్వాస్వవస్థాసు రక్షితవ్యా నరాధిపాః৷৷3.41.10৷৷


జయతామ్ among the victorious, వర best one, ధర్మశ్చ righteousness, జయశ్చ victory, రాజమూల: the king is the root, హి indeed, తస్మాత్ therefore, సర్వాసు in all, అవస్థాసు stages, నరాధిపాః kings, రక్షితవ్యాః deserve to be protected.

O Ravana, the best among the victorious! indeed the king is at the root of righteousness and victory.Therefore, the king should be protected by all at every stage.
రాజ్యం పాలయితుం శక్యం న తీక్ష్ణేన నిశాచర.

న చాపి ప్రతికూలేన నావినీతేన రాక్షస৷৷3.41.11৷৷


రాక్షస demons, నిశాచర nightwalker, తీక్ష్ణేన by a rude one, రాజ్యమ్ kingdom, పాలయితుమ్ to rule, న శక్యమ్ is not possible, ప్రతికూలేన by a hostile one, న not, అవినీతేన by an impolite one, న not.

O night-walking demon ! a kingdom cannnot be governed by a king who is rude or hostile or impolite.
యే తీక్ష్ణమన్త్రాస్సచివా భజ్యన్తే సహ తేన వై.

విషమే తురగా శ్శీఘ్రా మన్దసారథయో యథా৷৷3.41.12৷৷


యే whoever, సచివాః ministers, తీక్ష్ణమన్త్రాః who adopt improper strategies, మన్దసారథయః when the charioteer is driving slow, శీఘ్రాః swiftly, తురగాః horses, విషమే యథా on a rugged surface, likewise, తేన by that, సహ along with, భజ్యన్తే వై are overthrown.

Ministers who adopt improper strategies go down along with the king just like swift horses driven by a slow charioteer on a rugged terrain.
బహవస్సాధవో లోకే యుక్తా ధర్మమనుష్ఠితాః.

పరేషామపరాధేన వినష్టాస్సపరిచ్ఛదాః৷৷3.41.13৷৷


లోకే in this world, యుక్తాః engaged, ధర్మమ్ rightful duty, అనుష్ఠితాః following, బహవః many, సాధవః pious, పరేషామ్ of others, అపరాధేన by their mistakes, సపరిచ్ఛదాః along with their kith and kin, వినష్టాః ruined.

Persons who walk the righteous path go down in this world along with their kith and kin due to the mistakes committed by others .
స్వామినా ప్రతికూలేన ప్రజాస్తీక్ష్ణేన రావణ.

రక్ష్యమాణా న వర్ధన్తే మేషా గోమాయునా యథా৷৷3.41.14৷৷


రావణ Ravana, ప్రతికూలేన by an unfavourable, తీక్ష్ణేన by a rude one, స్వామినా by the master, రక్ష్యమాణాః protected, ప్రజాః people, గోమాయునా by a jackal, మేషాః యథా like sheep, న వర్ధన్తే do not grow.

O Ravana, people who are ruled by a cruel and hostile king will not grow like the sheep protected by a jackal.
అవశ్యం వినశిష్యన్తి సర్వే రావణ రాక్షసాః.

యేషాం త్వం కర్కశో రాజా దుర్బుద్ధిరజితేన్ద్రియః৷৷3.41.15৷৷


రావణ O Ravana, యేషామ్ of whom, కర్కశః rude , దుర్బుద్ధి: evil-minded, అజితేన్ద్రియః having no control over the senses, త్వమ్ you, రాజా king, సర్వే all, రాక్షసాః demons, అవశ్యమ్ surely, వినశిష్యన్తి perish.

Under a rude, crooked king whose senses are not under his control the demons will surely perish.
తదిదం కాకతాలీయం ఘోరమాసాదితం మయా.

అత్ర కిం శోచనీయస్త్వం ససైన్యో వినశిష్యసి৷৷3.41.16৷৷


మయా I, కాకతాలీయమ్ accidental, ఘోరమ్ dreadful, తత్ that, ఇదమ్ this, ఆసాదితమ్ reached, అత్ర here, కిమ్ what, త్వమ్ you, శోచనీయః deplorable, ససైన్యః along with your army, వినశిష్యసి will perish.

I am faced with this dreadful disaster accidentally. You will not only be in a miserable state because of your misdeeds, you will perish along with your army.
మాం నిహత్య తు రామశ్చ న చిరాత్త్వాం వధిష్యతి.

అనేన కృతకృత్యోస్మి మ్రియేయమరిణా హతః৷৷3.41.17৷৷


రామః Rama, మామ్ me, నిహత్య after killing, న చిరాత్ soon, త్వామ్ you, వధిష్యతి will kill, అరిణా by the enemy, హతః slayed, మ్రియేయమ్ I will die, అనేన by this, కృతకృత్యః accomplished, అస్మి I will be.

Rama will kill you not long after killing me.Hence even if I die in the hands of the enemy, my desire will be fulfilled.
దర్శనాదేవ రామస్య హతం మామవధారయ.

ఆత్మానం చ హతం విద్ధి హృత్వా సీతాం సబాన్ధవమ్৷৷3.41.18৷৷


రామస్య Rama's, దర్శనాదేవ by mere sight, మామ్ me, హతమ్ a dead one, అవధారయ presume, సీతామ్ Sita, హృత్వా abducting, సబాన్ధవమ్ along with your kith and kin, ఆత్మానమ్ yourself, హతమ్ killed, విద్ధి understand.

Yu most understand that if I die at the very sight of Rama, you along with your relatives will perish with the abduction of Sita.
ఆనయిష్యసి చేత్సీతామాశ్రమాత్సహితో మయా.

నైవత్వమసి నాహం చ నైవ లఙ్కా న రాక్షసాః৷৷3.41.19৷৷


మయా సహితః along with me, ఆశ్రమాత్ from the hermitage, సీతామ్ Sita, ఆనయిష్యసి చేత్ if you bring, త్వమ్ నైవ అసి you will not survive, అహం చ I also, న లఙ్కా nor Lanka, నైవ not, రాక్షసాః
demons, న not.

If you bring Sita from the hermitage with my assistance, know that none of us will survive-you nor I, nor Lanka , nor the demons.
నివార్యమాణస్తు మయా హితైషిణా న మృష్యసే వాక్యమిదం నిశాచర.

పరేతకల్పా హి గతాయుషో నరా హితం న గృహ్ణన్తి సుహృద్భిరీరితమ్৷৷3.41.20৷৷


నిశాచర Ravana, హితైషిణా by your well-wisher, మయా by me, నివార్యమాణః warned, ఇదమ్ this, వాక్యమ్ words, న మృష్యసే do not comprehend, గతాయుషః men of reduced life span, పరేతకల్పాః almost dead, నరాః people, సుహృద్భి: by friends, ఈరితమ్ told, హితమ్ good advice, న గృహ్ణన్తి హి not accept.

O Ravana, you do not understand this word of warning coming from your well-wisher. Men who are going to die do not heed the advice given by their friends.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే ఏకచత్వారింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
