[Maricha goes to Rama's cottage transformed into a wonderful deer and wanders-- Sita wonders at the deer.]

ఏవముక్త్వా తు వచనం మారీచో రావణం తతః.

గచ్ఛావేత్యబ్రవీద్దీనో భయాద్రాత్రించరప్రభోః৷৷3.42.1৷৷


తతః then, మారీచః Maricha, ఏవమ్ in that way, వచనమ్ words, ఉక్త్వా spoken, రాత్రించరప్రభోః of the king of the night-rangers, భయాత్ out of fear, దీనః distressed , గచ్ఛావ let us both go, ఇతి thus, రావణమ్ to Ravana, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Having thus spoken to the demon-king, the distressed Maricha said out of fear, Let both of us go.
దృష్టశ్చాహం పునస్తేన శరచాపాసిధారిణా.

మద్వధోద్యతశస్త్రేణ వినష్టం జీవితం చ మే৷৷3.42.2৷৷


అహమ్ I, శరచాపాసిధారిణా holding bow, arrows and sword, మద్వధోద్యతశస్త్రేణ who raises weapon to slay me, తేన by him, పునః again, దృష్టః seen, మే my, జీవితం చ వినష్టమ్ life will cease.

If that warrior Rama carrying bow, arrows and sword sees me once again he will raise his weapon to kill me, and I will cease to be.
న హి రామం పరాక్రమ్య జీవన్ప్రతినివర్తతే.

వర్తతే ప్రతిరూపోసౌ యమదణ్డహతస్య తే৷৷3.42.3৷৷


రామమ్ Rama, పరాక్రమ్య after exhibiting bravery, జీవన్ with life, న ప్రతినివర్తతే హి will not return, యమదణ్డహతస్య hit by Yama's staff, అసౌ he, ప్రతిరూపః another form, తే to you, వర్తతే is being.

No one who exhibits his heroism before Rama will come back alive. To you, already hit by Yama's staff, he is another form of the same Yama.
కిం ను శక్యం మయా కర్తుమేవం త్వయి దురాత్మని.

ఏష గచ్ఛామ్యహం తాత స్వస్తి తేస్తు నిశాచర৷৷3.42.4৷৷


త్వయి when you, ఏవమ్ in that way, దురాత్మని evil-minded, మయా I, కి ను what, కర్తుమ్ to do, శక్యమ్ is possible, తాత dear one, నిశాచర O demons, ఏష here, అహమ్ I am, గచ్ఛామి am going, తే to you, స్వస్తి be auspicious, అస్తు let it be.

What can I do if you remain evil-minded? O dear demon, I am going. May your path be auspicious !
ప్రహృష్టస్త్వభవత్తేన వచనేన స రావణః.

పరిష్వజ్య సుసంశ్లిష్టమిదం వచనమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.42.5৷৷


సః రావణః that, Ravana, తేన వచనేన with those words, ప్రహృష్టః felt happy, తు అభవత్ he was, సుసంశ్లిష్టమ్ tightly, పరిష్వజ్య embracing, ఇదమ్ these, వచనమ్ words , అబ్రవీత్ said.

Ravana was so overwhelmed with joy to hear those words that he embraced him tightly and said:.
ఏతచ్ఛౌణ్డీర్యయుక్తం తే మచ్ఛన్దవశవర్తినః.

ఇదానీమసి మారీచః పూర్వమన్యో నిశాచరః৷৷3.42.6৷৷


మచ్ఛన్దవశవర్తినః act according to my wish, తే to you, ఏతత్ this, శౌణ్డీర్యయుక్తమ్ it befits your valour, ఇదానీమ్ now, మారీచః Maricha, అసి you are, పూర్వమ్ earlier, అన్యః other, రాక్షసః హి demons.

Act according to my wish. It befits your valour. You were a different demon earlier. Now you are Maricha.
ఆరుహ్యతామయం శీఘ్రం రథో రత్నవిభూషితః.

మయా సహ తథా యుక్తః పిశాచవదనైః ఖరైః৷৷3.42.7৷৷


తథా similarly, పిశాచవదనైః with devilish faces, ఖరైః with donkeys, యుక్తః yoked, రత్నవిభూషితః encrusted with gems, రథః chariot, శీఘ్రమ్ quickly, మయా సహ along with me, ఆరుహ్యతామ్ ascend.

Ascend quickly with me this chariot encrusted with gems and yoked with donkeys with devils' faces৷৷
ప్రలోభయిత్వా వైదేహీం యథేష్టం గన్తుమర్హసి.

తాం శూన్యే ప్రసభం సీతామానయిష్యామి మైథిలీమ్৷৷3.42.8৷৷


వైదేహీమ్ to Vaidehi, ప్రలోభయిత్వా after tempting, యథేష్టమ్ wherever you like, గన్తుమ్ to go, అర్హసి should, శూన్యే when no one is there, మైథిలీమ్ princess of Mithila, తాం సీతామ్ that Sita, ప్రసభమ్ forcibly, ఆనయిష్యామి will bring.

You may go whereever you like after tempting Vaidehi. When the princess of Mithila is alone, I will bring her by force.
తతో రావణమారీచౌ విమానమివ తం రథమ్.

ఆరుహ్య యయతుశ్శీఘ్రం తస్మాదాశ్రమమణ్డలాత్৷৷3.42.9৷৷


తతః thereafter, రావణమారీచౌ Ravana and Maricha, తం రథమ్ that chariot, విమానమివ like an aerial chariot, ఆరుహ్య ascending, తస్మాత్ from that, ఆశ్రమమణ్డలాత్ cluster of hermitages, శీఘ్రమ్ quickly, యయతుః departed.

Thereafter Ravana and Maricha ascended the chariot, which was like an aerial car, and quickly departed from that cluster of hermitages.
తథైవ తత్ర పశ్యన్తౌ పత్తనాని వనాని చ.

గీరీంశ్చ సరితస్సర్వా రాష్ట్రాణి నగరాణి చ৷৷3.42.10৷৷


తథైవ and likewise, తత్ర there, పత్తనాని towns, వనాని చ and forests, గిరీంశ్చ mountains, సర్వాః all, సరితః streams, రాష్ట్రాణి states, నగరాణి చ cities, పశ్యన్తౌ seeing;

సమేత్య దణ్డకారణ్యం రాఘవస్యాశ్రమం తతః.

దదర్శ సహ మారీచో రావణో రాక్షసాధిపః৷৷3.42.11৷৷


సహమారీచః accompanied by Maricha, రాక్షసాధిపః king of demons, రావణః Ravana, దణ్డకారణ్యమ్ Dandaka forest, సమేత్య reached, తతః then, రాఘవస్య Rama's, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitage, దదర్శ noticed.

Ravana, king of the demons, accompanied by Maricha, then reached Dandaka forest and saw Rama's hermitage.
అవతీర్య రథాత్తస్మాత్తతః కాఞ్చనభూషణాత్.

హస్తే గృహీత్వా మారీచం రావణో వాక్యమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.42.12৷৷


రావణః Ravana, కాఞ్చనభూషణాత్ decorated with golden ornaments, తస్మాత్ from that, రథాత్ chariot, అవతీర్య getting down, తతః then, మారీచమ్ Maricha, హస్తే by hand, గృహీత్వా, held, వాక్యమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Then Ravana got off the chariot decorated with golden embellishments and, holding Maricha's hand, said:.
ఏతదాశ్రమపదం దృశ్యతే కదలీవృతమ్.

క్రియతాం తత్సఖే శీఘ్రం యదర్థం వయమాగతాః৷৷3.42.13৷৷


సఖే O friend, కదలీవృతమ్ surrounded by banana plants, ఏతత్ this, తత్ that, ఆశ్రమపదమ్ site
of hermitage, దృశ్యతే is seen, వయమ్ we, యదర్థమ్ the purpose for which, ఆగతాః we came, తత్ that, శీఘ్రమ్ quickly, క్రియతామ్ should be done.

O friend! here is the site of the hermitage surrounded by banana plants. Quickly get to work on the purpose for which we have come.
స రావణవచశ్శ్రుత్వా మారీచో రాక్షసస్తదా.

మృగో భూత్వాశ్రమద్వారి రామస్య విచచార హ৷৷3.42.14৷৷


తదా then, సః that, రాక్షసః demon, మారీచః Maricha, రావణవచః Ravana's words, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, మృగః deer, భూత్వా transformed, రామస్య Rama's, ఆశ్రమద్వారి at the entrance of the hermitage, విచచార హ started moving.

Hearing Ravana's words, Maricha transformed himself into a deer and started moving at the entrance of Rama's hermitage.
స తు తద్రూపమాస్థాయ మహదద్భుతదర్శనమ్.

మణిప్రవరశృఙ్గాగ్రస్సితాసితముఖాకృతిః৷৷3.42.15৷৷


సః Maricha, అద్భుతదర్శనమ్ wonderful to look at, మహత్ magnificent, తత్ that, రూపమ్ form, ఆస్థాయ assumed, మణిప్రవరశృఙ్గాగ్రః antlers studded with the best of gems, సితాసితముఖాకృతిః face dappled with luminous spots of white and black.

Maricha assumed the form of a wonderful and magnificent deer with his antlers studded with the most precious gems, his face dappled with luminous spots of white and black.
రక్తపద్మోత్పలముఖ ఇన్ద్రనీలోత్పలశ్రవాః.

కించిదభ్యున్నతగ్రీవ ఇంద్రనీలదలాధరః৷৷3.42.16৷৷


రక్తపద్మోత్పలముఖః mouth like pink lotus, ఇన్ద్రనీలోత్పలశ్రవాః ears like blue lotus, కిఞ్చిత్ a bit, అభ్యున్నతగ్రీవః raised neck, ఇన్ద్రనీలదలాధరః lips like petals of blue lotus.

The deer's face was like a pink lotus, his ears were like blue lotus. His neck slightly raised, his lips were like petals of blue lotus.
కున్దేన్దువజ్రసఙ్కాశముదరం చాస్య భాస్వరమ్.

మధూకనిభపార్శ్వశ్చ పద్మకిఞ్జల్కసన్నిభః৷৷3.42.17৷৷

వైడూర్యసఙ్కాశఖురస్తనుజఙ్ఘస్సుసంహతః.


అస్య its, భాస్వరమ్ shining, ఉదరమ్ stomach, కున్దేన్దువజ్రసఙ్కాశమ్ like white kunda flower, Moon and diamond, మధూకనిభపార్శ్వశ్చ sides like madhuka flowers, పద్మకిఞ్జల్కసన్నిభః comparable to the filaments of lotus, వైడూర్యసఙ్కాశఖురః hooves like Vaidurya, తనుజఙ్ఘః slim shank, సుసంహతః will-shaped.

His bright belly was shining like kunda flowers or the Moon or diamond. His flanks were like the golden madhuka flowers. comparable to the filaments of lotus. His hooves were like vaidurya, and his legs were slim and will-shaped.
ఇన్ద్రాయుధసవర్ణేన పుచ్ఛేనోర్ధ్వం విరాజతా৷৷3.42.18৷৷

మనోహరస్స్నిగ్ధవర్ణో రత్నైర్నానావిధైర్వృతః.


ఊర్ధ్వమ్ upward, విరాజతా stood, ఇన్ద్రాయుధ like a rainbow, సవర్ణేన colourful, పుచ్ఛేన with the tail, మనోహరః delightful, స్నిగ్ధవర్ణః shining, నానావిధైః various, రత్నైః gems, వృతః decked.

His tail stood up looking magnificent like a colourful rainbow. Bedecked with various gems, he shone beautiful.
క్షణేన రాక్షసో జాతో మృగః పరమశోభనః৷৷3.42.19৷৷

వనం ప్రజ్వలయన్రమ్యం రామాశ్రమపదం చ తత్.


రాక్షసః the demon, వనమ్ forest, రమ్యమ్ beautiful, తత్ రామాశ్రమపదమ్ that Rama's hermitage, ప్రజ్వలయన్ while brightening, క్షణేన in a moment, పరమశోభనః very beautiful, మృగః deer, జాతః
was transformed.

Transformed into a most beautiful deer in a moment, Maricha brightened the beautiful forest and Rama's hermitage.
మనోహరం దర్శనీయం రూపం కృత్వా స రాక్షసః৷৷3.42.20৷৷

ప్రలోభనార్థం వైదేహ్యా నానాధాతువిచిత్రితమ్.

విచరన్గచ్ఛతే తస్మాచ్ఛాద్వలాని సమన్తతః৷৷3.42.21৷৷


సః that, రాక్షసః demon, నానాధాతువిచిత్రితమ్ painted with colours of different minerals, మనోహరమ్ delightful, దర్శనీయమ్ beautiful, రూపమ్ form, కృత్వా after transforming, వైదేహ్యాః to Sita, ప్రలోభనార్థమ్ to tempt, విచరన్ while grazing, తస్మాత్ from that place, సమన్తతః all around, శాద్వలాని grassland, గచ్ఛతే moved about.

Transfigured into a beautiful, magnificent form painted with the colours of different minerals in order to tempt Sita, Maricha roamed all around the grassland.
రూప్యైర్బిన్దుశతైశ్చిత్రో భూత్వా స ప్రియదర్శనః.

విటపీనాం కిసలయాన్భఙ్త్క్వాదన్విచచార హ৷৷3.42.22৷৷


సః that, రూప్యైః by silver, బిన్దుశతైః with hudreds of spots, చిత్రః was wonderful, భూత్వా on transforming, ప్రియదర్శనః pleasing to the eyes, విటపీనామ్ trees, కిసలయాన్ tender leaves, భఙ్త్క్వా nibbling, అదన్ eating, విచచార హ wandered about.

That deer with hundreds of silver spots on the body appeared enchanting and pleasing to the eyes while he wandered about nibbling the tender leaves of trees.
కదలీగృహకం గత్వా కర్ణికారానితస్తతః.

సమాశ్రయన్మన్దగతిస్సీతాసన్దర్శనం తథా৷৷3.42.23৷৷


కదలీగృహకమ్ groves of banana, గత్వా on going, కర్ణికారాన్ the karnikara flowers, ఇతస్తతః
hither and thither, మన్దగతిః at a slow pace, తథా likewise, సీతాసన్దర్శనమ్ the sight of Sita, సమాశ్రయత్ resorted.

The deer went wandering about the banana groves surrounding Rama's hermitage and moved slowly towards the karnikara trees in order to catch the attention of Sita.
రాజీవచిత్రపృష్ఠస్స విరరాజ మహామృగః.

రామాశ్రమపదాభ్యాశే విచచార యథాసుఖమ్৷৷3.42.24৷৷


సః that, మహామృగః magnificent deer, రాజీవచిత్రపృష్ఠః his back with the colour of blue lotus, విరరాజ glittered, రామాశ్రమపదాభ్యాశే in the vicinity of Rama's hermitage, యథాసుఖమ్ comfortably, విచచార wandered.

That magnificent deer glittered with the colour of blue lotus on its back, wandered merrily in the vicinity of Rama's hermitage.
పునర్గత్వా నివృత్తశ్చ విచచార మృగోత్తమః.

గత్వా ముహూర్తం త్వరయా పునః ప్రతినివర్తతే৷৷3.42.25৷৷


మృగోత్తమః best of deer, గత్వా on going, పునః again, నివృత్తశ్చ came back, విచచార wandered, ముహూర్తమ్ for a moment, గత్వా after going, పునః again, త్వరయా swiftly, ప్రతినివర్తతే returned.

The wonderful deer moved to and fro, now disappearing and now swiftly returning.
విక్రీడంశ్చ క్వచిద్భూమౌ పునరేవ నిషీదతి.

ఆశ్రమద్వారమాగమ్య మృగయూథాని గచ్ఛతి৷৷3.42.26৷৷


విక్రీడంశ్చ while sporting so, పునరేవ again, క్వచిత్ sometimes, భూమౌ on the ground, పునరేవ again, నిషీదతి squat, ఆశ్రమద్వారమ్ at the entrance of the hermitage, ఆగమ్య after reaching, మృగయూథాని flock of deer, గచ్ఛతి goes.

The deer is now sporting, now sitting on the ground, now standing at the entrance of
the hermitage and now running with the herds of deer.
మృగయూథైరనుగతః పునరేవ నివర్తతే.

సీతాదర్శనమాకాంక్షన్రాక్షసో మృగతాం గతః৷৷3.42.27৷৷

పరిభ్రమతి చిత్రాణి మణ్డలాని వినిష్పతన్.


మృగతామ్ form of a deer, గతః transformed, రాక్షసః demon, సీతాదర్శనమ్ seeing Sita, ఆకాంక్షన్ intending, మృగయూథైః herds of deer, అనుగతః been followed, పునరేవ again, నివర్తతే he retuned, వినిష్పతన్ cavorted and pranced, చిత్రాణి wonderful, మణ్డలాని circles, పరిభ్రమతి turned round.

Followed by herds of deer and coming back to see Sita again and again, the deer cavorted and pranced and frisked in circles in a wonderful way.
సముద్వీక్ష్య చ తే సర్వే మృగా హ్యన్యే వనేచరాః৷৷3.42.28৷৷

ఉపాగమ్య సమాఘ్రాయ విద్రవన్తి దిశో దశ.


వనేచరాః wandering in the forest, అన్యే other, తే those, సర్వే all, మృగాః deer, సముద్విక్ష్య seeing, ఉపాగమ్య on coming near, సమాఘ్రాయ sniffing, దశ దిశః in all ten directions, విద్రవన్తి run away,

Seeing the deer, other animals wandering in the forest come near and sniffing him run away in all ten directions.
రాక్షసస్సోపి తాన్వన్యాన్మృగాన్మృగవధే రతః৷৷3.42.29৷৷

ప్రచ్ఛాదనార్థం భావస్య న భక్షయతి సంస్పృశన్.


మృగవధే in killing deer, రతః interested, సః he, రాక్షసోపి demon also, వన్యాన్ those wild, తాన్ those, మృగాన్ deer, సంస్పృశన్ touching and feeling, భావస్య his intention, ప్రచ్ఛాదనార్థమ్ to hide, న భక్షయతి does not feed on.

The demon who was interested in killing wild deer touched and felt them but did not
kill or feed on them in order to hide his intention.
తస్మిన్నేవ తతః కాలే వైదేహీ శుభలోచనా৷৷3.42.30৷৷

కుసుమావచయవ్యగ్రా పాదపానభ్యవర్తత.


తతః then, తస్మిన్నేవ కాలే at that time, శుభలోచనా lady of auspicious looks, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, కుసుమావచయవ్యగ్రా busy plucking flowers, పాదపాన్ the trees, అభ్యవర్తత came near,

In the mean time Sita who, with her auspicious looks, was busy plucking flowers drew near the trees.
కర్ణికారానశోకాంశ్చ చూతాంశ్చ మదిరేక్షణా৷৷3.42.31৷৷

కుసుమాన్యవచిన్వన్తీ చచార రుచిరాననా.


మదిరేక్షణా woman with bewitching eyes, రుచిరాననా of dazzling face, కర్ణికారాన్ karnikara trees, అశోకాంశ్ఛ ashoka, చూతాంశ్చ mango, కుసుమాని flowers, అవచిన్వన్తీ while plucking, చచార went about.

With her bewitching eyes and beautiful face, Sita, went about plucking flowers from karnikara, ashoka and mango trees.
అనర్హారణ్యవాసస్య సా తం రత్నమయం మృగమ్৷৷3.42.32৷৷

ముక్తామణి విచిత్రాఙ్గం దదర్శ పరమాఙ్గనా.


అరణ్యవాసస్య of living in the forest, అనర్హా unworthy, సా that, పరమాఙ్గనా great woman, రత్నమయమ్ encrusted with gold, ముక్తామణివిచిత్రాఙ్గమ్ with a wonderful body dotted with pearls and gems, తం మృగమ్ that deer, దదర్శ saw.

The great lady Sita, unworthy of dwelling in the forest, saw the wonderful deer decked with gems, with spots of pearls all over the body.
సా తం రుచిరదన్తోష్ఠీ రూప్యధాతుతనూరుహమ్৷৷3.42.33৷৷

విస్మయోత్ఫుల్లనయనా సస్నేహం సముదైక్షత.


రుచిరదన్తోష్ఠీ a lady of beautiful teeth and lips, సా that Sita, రూప్యధాతుతనూరుహమ్ animal with silver and mineral coloured hair on the body, తమ్ deer, విస్మయోత్ఫుల్లనయనా with eyes of wonder and joy, సస్నేహమ్ with affection, సముదైక్షత gazed at.

A lady with beautiful teeth and lips, Sita saw the deer having silver and mineral coloured hair on the body. She gazed at the animal with wonder and joy and love.
స చ తాం రామదయితాం పశ్యన్మాయామయో మృగః৷৷3.42.34৷৷

విచచార పునశ్చిత్రం దీపయన్నివ తద్వనమ్.


మాయామయః illusory one, సః that, మృగశ్చ the deer, తాం her, రామదయితామ్ Rama's wife, పశ్యన్ on seeing, తత్ వనమ్ that forest, దీపయన్నివ as if illuminating, పునః again, చిత్రమ్ wonderfully, విచచార moved around.

That illusory deer saw Rama's wife and moved around wonderfully as if illuminating the forest with his radiance.
అదృష్టపూర్వం తం దృష్ట్వా నానారత్నమయం మృగమ్৷৷3.42.35৷৷

విస్మయం పరమం సీతా జగామ జనకాత్మజా.


అదృష్టపూర్వమ్ never seen before, నానారత్నమయమ్ decorated with different gems, తం మృగమ్ that deer, దృష్ట్వా seeing, జనకాత్మజా daughter of Janaka, సీతా Sita, పరమమ్ very much, విస్మయమ్ surprised, జగామ experienced.

Seeing such an unprecedented deer decorated with different gems, Sita, daughter of Janaka, stood amazed.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే ద్విచత్వారింశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fortysecond sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
