[Rama chases the magic deer-- unable to catch, kills it -- gets stunned at the deer calling out Sita, Lakshmana imitating his voice--death of the deer--Rama returns to the hermitage.]

తథా తు తం సమాదిశ్య భ్రాతరం రఘునన్దనః.

బబన్ధాసిం మహాతేజా జామ్బూనదమయత్సరుమ్৷৷3.44.1৷৷


మహాతేజాః brilliant, రఘునన్దనః delight of the Raghu dynasty, భ్రాతరమ్ brother, తమ్ to him, తథా in that way, సమాదిశ్య instructed, జామ్బూనదమయత్సరుమ్ golden handle , అసిమ్ the sword, బబన్ధ tied.

The brilliant Rama, delight of the Raghu dynasty, thus instructed his brother and fastened a sword with a golden handle to his waist.
తత స్త్ర్యవనతం చాపమాదాయాత్మవిభూషణమ్.

ఆబధ్య చ కలాపౌ ద్వౌ జగామోదగ్రవిక్రమః৷৷3.44.2৷৷


తతః then, ఉదగ్రవిక్రమః of indomitable prowess, త్ర్యవనతమ్ bent in three places, ఆత్మవిభూషణమ్ an ornament to him, చాపమ్ bow, ఆదాయ took, ద్వౌ both, కలాపౌ two quivers, ఆబద్ధ్య tied at the back, జగామ went.

A man of indomitable prowess, he took the bow with three curves that was like an ornament to him, tied two quivers at the back and left.
తం వఞ్చయానో రాజేన్ద్రమాపతన్తం నిరీక్ష్యవై.

బభూవాన్తర్హితస్త్రాసాత్పునస్సన్దర్శనేభవత్৷৷చ3.44.3৷৷

బద్ధాసిర్ధనురాదాయ ప్రదుద్రావ యతో మృగః.


ఆపతన్తమ్ approaching, రాజేన్ద్రమ్ to the king, తమ్ him, నిరీక్షయ seeing, వఞ్చయానః while deceiving, త్రాసాత్ out of fear, అన్తర్హితః disappeared, బభూవ became, పునః again, సన్దర్శనే within sight, అభవత్ appeared, బద్ధాసిః held his sword, ధనుః bow, ఆదాయ lifting, మృగః deer, యతః wherever, ప్రదుద్రావ ran.

On seeing Rama approaching him, the deer disappeared due to fear and again came within sight. With his sword and the bow, Rama chased wherever the deer ran.
తం స్మ పశ్యతి రూపేణ ద్యోతమానమివాగ్రతః৷৷3.44.4৷৷

అవేక్ష్యావేక్ష్య ధావన్తం ధనుష్పాణిర్మహావనే.

అతివృత్తమిషోః పాతాల్లోభయానం కదాచన৷৷3.44.5৷৷

శఙ్కితన్తు సముద్భ్రాన్తముత్పతన్తమివామ్బరే.

దృశ్యమానమదృశ్యం చ వనోద్దేశేషు కేషుచిత్৷৷3.44.6৷৷

ఛిన్నాభ్రైరివ సంవీతం శారదం చన్ద్రమణ్డలమ్.


ధనుష్పాణిః wielder of the bow (Rama), అవేక్ష్య saw, మహావనే in the huge forest, ధావన్తమ్ running, తమ్ him, రూపేణ form, అగ్రతః in front, పశ్యతి స్మ saw, కదాచన sometimes, ఇషోః scared of the arrow, పాతాత్ ran, అతివృత్తమ్ went out of reach, లోభయానమ్ enticing, శఙ్కితమ్ frightened, సముద్భ్రాన్తమ్ bewildered, అమ్బరే in the sky, ఉత్పతన్తమివ as if flying up, ఛిన్నాభ్రైః by the scattered clouds, సంవీతమ్ surrounded, శారదమ్ autumnal,చన్ద్రమణ్డలమ్ ఇవ like the orb of the Moon, కేషుచిత్ in certain places, వనోద్దేశేషు in the forest tract, దృశ్యమానమ్ came within sight, అదృశ్యం చ again disappeared.

Rama, wielder of the bow, saw that splendid animal ahead of him. Holding the bow he saw the deer running away, bewldered into the great forest looking at him again and again. The deer was getting out of the range of his arrow, while it enticed him now and then. Suspecting that he might be caught, the deer was, as though jumping into the sky. Now it came within sight and now out of sight in the huge forest. It looked like the autumnal moon surrounded by clouds. (The clouds muffle the Moon and reveal him now and then).
ముహుర్తాదేవ దదృశే ముహుర్దూరాత్ప్రకాశతే৷৷3.44.7৷৷

దర్శనాదర్శనాదేవం సోపాకర్షత రాఘవమ్.

సుదూరమాశ్రమస్యాస్య మారీచో మృగతాం గతః৷৷3.44.8৷৷


మృగతామ్ in the form of a deer, గతః transformed, సః మారీచః that Maricha, ముహూర్తాదేవ for a moment, దదృశే was seen, ముహుః again, (ముహూర్తాత్ another moment), దూరాత్ at a distance, ప్రకాశతే appeared, ఏవం as, దర్శనాదర్శనాత్ appearing and disappearing, రాఘవమ్ Rama, ఉపాకర్షత pulled away.

Maricha, transformed into a deer, was seen now near, now far-off. He pulled Rama away from the hermitage through his exits and entrances.
ఆసీత్ క్రుద్ధస్తు కాకుత్స్థో వివశస్తేన మోహితః.

అథావతస్థే సంభ్రాన్తశ్చాయామాశ్రిత్య శాద్వలే৷৷3.44.9৷৷


తేన by that, మోహితః deluded, కాకుత్స్థ:Rama, వివశః tired, క్రుద్ధః in rage, ఆసీత్ was, అథ then, సంభ్రాన్తః perplexed, ఛాయామ్ shade, ఆశ్రిత్య seeking, శాద్వలే on green grass, అవతస్థే waited.

Deluded by that deer, Rama got tired, perplexed and angry. Then bewidered, he waited on a grassland under a shade.
స తమున్మాదయామాస మృగరూపో నిశాచరః.

మృగైః పరివృతో వన్యైరదూరాత్ప్రత్యదృశ్యత৷৷3.44.10৷৷


మృగరూపః assuming the form of a deer, సః నిశాచరః that demon, తమ్ him, ఉన్మాదయామాస excited, వన్యైః with forest, మృగైః animals, పరివృతః surrounded by, అదూరాత్ not very far from him, అదృశ్యత was seen.

That demon transformed himself into a deer and, surrounded by the animals of the forest at close range, attracted his attention.
గృహీతుకామం దృష్ట్వైవం పునరేవాభ్యధావత.

తత్క్షణాదేవ సంత్రాసాత్పునరన్తర్హితోభవత్৷৷3.44.11৷৷


గృహీతుకామమ్ intending to catch him, ఏవమ్ in that way, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, పునరేవ once again, అభ్యధావత ran, తత్క్షణాదేవ in a moment, పునరేవ again, త్రాసాత్ out of fear, అన్తర్హితః disappeared, అభవత్ became.

Seeing Rama's intention to catch him, the deer ran away once again out of fear and disappeared in a moment.
పునరేవ తతో దూరాద్వృక్షషణ్డాద్వినిస్సృతమ్.

దృష్ట్వా రామో మహాతేజాస్తం హన్తుం కృతనిశ్చయః৷৷3.44.12৷৷


తతః then, మహాతేజాః resplendent, రామః Rama , పునరేవ again, దూరాత్ from a distance, వృక్షషణ్డాత్ from a group of trees, వినిస్సృతమ్ coming out, తమ్ him, దృష్ట్వా saw, హన్తుమ్ to kill, కృతనిశ్చయః determined .

Resplendent Rama saw the deer coming out of a cluster of trees at a distance and determined to kill him.
భూయస్తు శరముద్ధృత్య కుపితస్తత్ర రాఘవః.

సూర్యరశ్మిప్రతీకాశం జ్వలన్తమరిమర్దనః৷৷3.44.13৷৷

సన్ధాయ సుదృఢే చాపే వికృష్య బలవద్బలీ.

తమేవ మృగముద్దిశ్య శ్వసన్తమివ పన్నగమ్৷৷3.44.14৷৷

ముమోచ జ్వలితం దీప్తమస్త్రం బ్రహ్మవినిర్మితమ్.


తత్ర there, భూయః again, కుపితః enraged, అరిమర్దనః destroyer of foes, బలీ powerful,రాఘవః Rama, సూర్యరశ్మిప్రతీకాశమ్ glowing like the rays of the Sun, జ్వలన్తమ్ blazing, శరమ్ dart, ఉద్ధృత్య
lifting, సుదృఢే in a sturdy, చాపే in bow, సన్ధాయ aiming, బలవత్ with force, వికృష్య drew, శ్వసన్తమ్ sighing, పన్నగమ్ ఇవ like the serpent, జ్వలితమ్ burning, దీప్తమ్ shining, బ్రహ్మనిర్మితమ్ created by Brahma, అస్త్రమ్ weapon, తమ్ him, మృగమేవ on the deer, ఉద్దిశ్య aiming, ముమోచ released.

Powerful Rama, destroyer of foes, lifted in a rage his arrow blazing like the light of the Sun, strung it to his sturdy bow and drew it with all his force. He then aimed at the deer and released the shining arrow created by Brahma which went hissing like a serpent.
శరీరం మృగరూపస్య వినిర్భిద్య శరోత్తమః৷৷3.44.15৷৷

మారీచస్యైవ హృదయం బిభేదాశనిసన్నిభః.


ఆశనిసన్నిభః like thunderbolt, శరోత్తమః the great arrow, మృగరూపస్య assuming deer form, శరీరమ్ body, వినిర్భిద్య pierced, మారీచస్య Maricha's, హృదయమేవ heart, బిభేద tore.

The great arrow which was like a thunderbolt first pierced into the body of Maricha who had assumed the form of a deer and then tore his heart.
తాలమాత్రమథోత్ప్లుత్య న్యపతత్సశరాతురః৷৷3.44.16৷৷

వినదన్భైరవం నాదం ధరణ్యామల్పజీవితః.


అథ and then, సః Maricha, శరాతురః hurt by the dart, అల్పజీవితః very little life left, భైరవం నాదమ్ frightening sound, వినదన్ released, తాలమాత్రమ్ to the height of a palm tree, ఉత్ప్లుత్య leaped up, ధరణ్యామ్ on earth, న్యపతత్ dropped.

And, hurt by the dart, Maricha roared frighteningly, leaped as high as a palm tree and dropped down on earth almost dead.
మ్రియమాణస్తు మారీచో జహౌ తాం కృత్రిమాం తనుమ్৷৷3.44.17৷৷

స్మృత్వా తద్వచనం రక్షో దధ్యౌ కేన తు లక్ష్మణమ్.

ఇహ ప్రస్థాపయేత్సీతా శూన్యే తాం రావణో హరేత్৷৷3.44.18৷৷


మారీచః Maricha, మ్రియమాణః breathing his last, కృత్రిమామ్ artificial, తామ్ that, తనుమ్ body, జహౌ gave up, రక్షః the demon, తద్వచనమ్ those words, స్మృత్వా remembering, దధ్యౌ thought, సీతా Sita, కేన by what means, లక్ష్మణమ్ Lakshmana, ఇహ here, ప్రస్థాపయేత్ she may send, శూన్యే in seclusion, తామ్ her, రావణః Ravana, హరేత్ will abduct.

Maricha gave up his false form of the deer and before breathing his last, remembered the words of Ravana. He thought over the means through which Sita could send Lakshmana to this spot so that Ravana would abduct her when she is alone.
స ప్రాప్తకాలమాజ్ఞాయ చకార చ తత స్వనమ్.

సదృశం రాఘవస్యేహ హా సీతే లక్ష్మణేతి చ৷৷3.44.19৷৷


తతః then, సః Maricha, ప్రాప్తకాలమ్ the right time, ఆజ్ఞాయ having realised, రాఘవస్య Rama's, సదృశమ్ similar, హా సీతే Alas, Sita, లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, ఇతి చ like that, స్వనమ్ a sound, చకార released.

Then Maricha realised that the appropriate time had come. In a voice similar to Rama's, he shouted loudly 'Alas Sita, Alas Lakshmana !'
తేన మర్మణి నిర్విద్ధం శరేణానుపమేన హి.

మృగరూపం తు తత్త్యక్త్వా రాక్షసం రూపమాస్థితః৷৷3.44.20৷৷

చక్రే స సుమహాకాయం మారీచో జీవితం త్యజన్.


సః మారీచః that, Maricha, తేన by that, అనుపమేన matchless, శరేణ by the dart, మర్మణి in vital part, నిర్విద్ధమ్ struck, తత్ then, మృగరూపమ్ form of a deer, త్వక్త్వా giving up, రాక్షసం రూపమ్ form of a demon, ఆస్థితః assumed, జీవితమ్ life, త్యజన్ while giving up, సుమహాకాయమ్ that huge body, చక్రే attained.

Struck in the vital part by Rama's matchless dart, Maricha gave up the form of the deer and assumed his huge body of the demon.
తం దృష్ట్వా పతితం భూమౌ రాక్షసం ఘోరదర్శనమ్৷৷3.44.21৷৷

రామో రుధిరసిక్తాఙ్గం చేష్టమానం మహీతలే.

జగామ మనసా సీతాం లక్ష్మణస్య వచస్స్మరన్৷৷3.44.22৷৷


రామః Rama, భూమౌ on the ground, పతితమ్ fallen down, ఘోరదర్శనమ్ terrific figure, రుధిరసిక్తాఙ్గమ్ drenched in blood, మహీతలే on the ground, చేష్టమానమ్ moving his limbs, తం రాక్షసమ్ that demon, దృష్ట్వా seen, లక్ష్మణస్య Lakshmana's, వచః words, స్మరన్ remembered, మనసా by his mind, సీతామ్ Sita, జగామ went.

Seeing that terrific demon fallen on the ground, drenched in blood, and strring his limbs, Rama thought of Lakshmana's words and reached Sita mentally (thought of her).
మారీచస్య తు మాయైషా పూర్వోక్తం లక్ష్మణేన తు.

తత్తథా హ్యభవచ్చాద్య మారీచోయం మయా హతః৷৷3.44.23৷৷


ఏషా this way, మారీచస్య Maricha's, మాయా magic, లక్ష్మణేన by Lakshmana, పూర్వోక్తమ్ told earlier, తత్ that, తథా in the same way, అభవత్ హి it happened, మయా by me, హతః killed, అయమ్ that, మారీచః Maricha.

This is an illusion created by Maricha. It happened exactly the way Lakshmana had said earlier. Maricha is now killed.
హా సీతే లక్ష్మణేత్యేవమాక్రుశ్య చ మహాస్వరమ్.

మమార రాక్షసస్సోయం శ్రుత్వా సీతా కథం భవేత్৷৷3.44.24৷৷

లక్ష్మణశ్చ మహాబాహుః కామవస్థాం గమిష్యతి.

ఇతి సఞ్చిన్త్య ధర్మాత్మా రామో హృష్టతనూరుహః৷৷3.44.25৷৷


సః he, Maricha, అయం రాక్షసః this demon, హా సీతే Alas, Sita, లక్ష్మణ (Alas,) Lakshmana,
ఇత్యేవమ్ in this manner, మహాస్వరమ్ loudly, ఆక్రుశ్య screamed, మమార died, శ్రుత్వా heard, సీతా Sita, కథమ్ how, భవేత్ will she be, మహాబాహుః long- armed, లక్ష్మణశ్చ Lakshmana too, కామ్ what, అవస్థామ్ situation, గమిష్యతి will reach, ధర్మాత్మా righteous , రామః Rama, ఇతి like this, సఞ్చిన్త్య on thinking, హృష్టతనూరూహః his hair stood on end.

This demon Maricha screamed aloud saying, 'Alas, Sita, Alas, Lakshmana'. He is now dead. How would Sita react to this voice? What would be the condition of Lakshmana? While righteous Rama reflected on this, his hair stood on end.
తత్ర రామం భయం తీవ్రమావివేశ విషాదజమ్.

రాక్షసం మృగరూపం తం హత్వా శ్రుత్వా చ తత్స్వరమ్৷৷3.44.26৷৷


మృగరూపమ్ in the form of a deer, రాక్షసమ్ demon, హత్వా having killed, తత్స్వరమ్ that sound, శ్రుత్వా చ having heard, తత్ర there, రామమ్ Rama, విషాదజమ్ born of sadness, తీవ్రమ్ intense, భయమ్ fear, ఆవివేశ came over.

After killing the demon in the figure of a deer and hearing his voice, Rama was overtaken by intense fear born of despair.
నిహత్య పృషతం చాన్యం మాంసమాదాయ రాఘవః.

త్వరమాణో జనస్థానం ససారాభిముఖస్తదా৷৷3.44.27৷৷


తదా then, రాఘవః Rama, అన్యమ్ another, పృషతమ్ deer, నిహత్య having killed, మాంసమ్ venison, ఆదాయ collected, త్వరమాణః quickly, జనస్థానమ్ Janasthanam, అభిముఖః towards, ససార departed.

Then Rama killed another deer, collected the venison and hastened to Janasthana.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే చతుశ్చత్వారింశస్సర్గః.
Thus ends the fortyfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
