[Jatayu fights Ravana -- wounded Ravana clips Jatayu's wings and carries away Sita.]

ఇత్యుక్తస్య యథాన్యాయం రావణస్య జటాయుషా.

క్రుద్ధస్యాగ్నినిభాస్సర్వా రేజుర్వింశతిదృష్టయః৷৷3.51.1৷৷


జటాయుషా by Jatayu, యథాన్యాయమ్ justly, ఇతి in this manner, ఉక్తస్య told, క్రుద్ధస్య of the enraged, రావణస్య Ravana's, సర్వాః all, వింశతిదృష్టయః twenty eyes, అగ్నినిభాః like fire, రేజుః glowed.

Ravana's twenty eyes glowed like fire in anger after Jatayu thus rightly said.
సంరక్తనయనః కోపాత్తప్తకాఞ్చనకుణ్డలః.

రాక్షసేన్ద్రోభిదుద్రావ పతగేన్ద్రమమర్షణః৷৷3.51.2৷৷


తప్తకాఞ్చనకుణ్డలః bright gold ear-rings, అమర్షణః intolerant, రాక్షసేన్ద్రః king of demons, కోపాత్ in anger, సంరక్తనయనః eyes turned red, పతగేన్ద్రమ్ to lord of birds (Jatayu), అభిదుద్రావ leaped.

As the bright gold ear-rings of the intolerant king of demons glittered, his eyes turned red in rage and he pounced upon Jatayu, the lord of birds.
స సమ్ప్రహారస్తుముల స్తయోస్తస్మిన్మహావనే.

బభూవ వాతోద్ధతయోర్మేఘయోర్గగనే యథా৷৷3.51.3৷৷


తస్మిన్ in that, మహావనే in the huge forest, తయోః between them, తుములః tumultuous, సః సమ్ప్రహారః fight, గగనే in the sky, వాతోద్ధతయోః stormy wind that arose, మేఘయోర్యథా like two flakes of clouds, బభూవ appeared.

The clash between them was tumultuous and it appeared like the clash of two pieces of clouds in the sky raised by stormy winds.
తద్బభూవాద్భుతం యుద్ధం గృధ్రరాక్షసయోస్తదా.

సపక్షయోర్మాల్యవతోర్మహాపర్వతయోరివ৷৷3.51.4৷৷


తదా then, (తయోః of both of them), గృధ్రరాక్షసయోః vulture and demon, తత్ that, అద్భుతమ్ wonderful, యుద్ధమ్ war, సపక్షయోః of the winged ones, మాల్యవతోః of Malyavan range, మహాపర్వతయోరివ between two huge mountains, బభూవ took place.

The duel between Ravana and Jatayu looked as though it was a fight between two huge winged mountains of Malyavan range.
తతో నాలీకనారాచైస్తీక్ష్ణాగ్రైశ్చ వికర్ణిభిః.

అభ్యవర్షన్మహాఘోరైర్గృధ్రరాజం మహాబలః৷৷3.51.5৷৷


తతః then,మహాబలః mighty, తీక్ష్ణాగ్రైః with sharp tips, మహాఘోరైః dreadful, నాలీకనారాచైః by spears and shafts, వికర్ణిభిః a weapon named Vikarni, గృధ్రరాజమ్ king of vultures, అభ్యవర్షత్ rained.

Then the mighty Ravana rained sharp, dreadful shafts, spears and Vikarnis at Jatayu, king of vultures.
స తాని శరజాలాని గృధ్రః పత్త్రరథేశ్వరః.

జటాయుః ప్రతిజగ్రాహ రావణాస్త్రాణి సంయుగే৷৷3.51.6৷৷


పత్రరథేశ్వరః lord of birds, గృధ్రః vulture, జటాయుః Jatayu, సంయుగే in encounter, తాని those, శరజాలాని all the arrows, రావణాస్త్రాణి Ravana's weapons, ప్రతిజగ్రాహ endured.

Jatayu, lord of the birds, faced the arrows and other weapons showered by Ravana.
తస్య తీక్ష్ణనఖాభ్యాం తు చరణాభ్యాం మహాబలః.

చకార బహుధా గాత్రే వ్రణాన్పతగసత్తమః৷৷3.51.7৷৷


మహాబలః very strong, పతగసత్తమః virtuous vulture, తీక్ష్ణనఖాభ్యామ్ with sharp claws, చరణాభ్యామ్ with both feet, తస్య his, గాత్రే on the limbs, బహుధా many ways, వ్రణాన్ wounds, చకార pierced.

The mighty, virtuous vulture with his sharp claws wounded many parts of the body of Ravana.
అథ క్రోధాద్ధశగ్రీవో జగ్రాహ దశ మార్గణాన్.

మృత్యుదణ్డనిభాన్ఘోరాన్ఛత్రుమర్దనకాఙ్క్షయా৷৷3.51.8৷৷


అథ at that time, దశగ్రీవః the ten-headed Ravana, క్రోధాత్ enraged, శత్రుమర్దనకాఙ్క్షయా with a desire to crush the enemy, మృత్యుదణ్డనిభాన్ like the staff of death, ఘోరాన్ fierce, దశ మార్గణాన్ ten darts, జగ్రాహ unleashed.

Ravana in a rage took ten dreadful darts (looking) like the staff of death with a desire to crush the enemy.
స తైర్బాణైర్మహావీర్యః పూర్ణముక్తైరజిహ్మగైః.

బిభేద నిశితైస్తీక్ష్ణైర్గృధ్రం ఘోరైశ్శిలీముఖైః৷৷3.51.9৷৷


మహావీర్యః mighty, సః he, పూర్ణముక్తై: fully released, అజిహ్మగైః going straight, నిశితైః whetted, తీక్ష్ణై with sharp, ఘోరైః dreadful, శిలీముఖైః with arrows, తైః those, బాణైః arrows, గృధ్రమ్ at the vulture, బిభేద pierced.

The mighty Ravana fully released his dreadful, sharp arrows that went straight and pierced the vulture.
స రాక్షసరథే పశ్యన్జానకీం బాష్పలోచనామ్.

అచిన్తయిత్వా తాన్బాణాన్రాక్షసం సమభిద్రవత్৷৷3.51.10৷৷


సః that, రాక్షసరథే on the demon's chariot, బాష్పలోచనామ్ eyes filled with tears, జానకీమ్ Sita,
daughter of Janaka, పశ్యన్ observing, తాన్ those, బాణాన్ arrows, అచిన్తయిత్వా without minding, రాక్షసమ్ to the demon, సమభిద్రవత్ attacked again.

Seeing Sita, daughter of Janaka, on the demon's chariot with eyes full of tears, Jatayu without minding the arrows renewed his attack.
తతోస్య సశరం చాపం ముక్తామణివిభూషితమ్.

చరణాభ్యాం మహాతేజా బభఞ్జ పతగేశ్వరః৷৷3.51.11৷৷


తతః then, మహాతేజాః glorious, పతగేశ్వరః lord of birds, అస్య his, ముక్తామణివిభూషితమ్ encrusted with pearls and gems, సశరమ్ along with that arrow, చాపమ్ bow, చరణాభ్యామ్ with his feet, బభఞ్జ broke.

The glorious lord of birds crushed with his feet the bow and arrow of Ravana with pearls and gems encrusted.
తతోన్యద్ధనురాదాయ రావణః క్రోధమూర్ఛితః.

వవర్ష శరవర్షాణి శతశోథ సహస్రశః৷৷3.51.12৷৷


తతః then, రావణః Ravana, క్రోధమూర్ఛితః overcome with anger, అన్యత్ other, ధనుః bow, ఆదాయ after taking, శతశః hundreds of, అథ and, సహస్రశః in thousands, శరవర్షాణి rain of arrows, వవర్ష rained.

Overcome with anger, Ravana took another bow and rained (on him) hundreds and thousands of arrows.
శరైరావారితస్తస్య సంయుగే పతగేశ్వరః.

కులాయముపసమ్ప్రాప్తః పక్షీవ ప్రబభౌ తదా৷৷3.51.13৷৷


తదా then, సంయుగే in the encounter, తస్య his, శరైః arrows, ఆవారితః surrounded, పతగేశ్వరః Jatayu, కులాయమ్ nest of the bird, ఉపసమ్ప్రాప్తః returned, పక్షీవ resemled the bird, ప్రబభౌ shone.

Jatayu, shot with arrows on all sides in the combat, shone like the bird that returned to its nest.
స తాని శరవర్షాణి పక్షాభ్యాం చ విధూయచ.

చరణాభ్యాం మహాతేజా బభఞ్జాస్య మహద్ధనుః৷৷3.51.14৷৷


మహాతేజాః powerful, సః Jatayu, తాని those, శరవర్షాణి rain of arrows, పక్షాభ్యామ్ by the wings, విధూయ చ on scattering, అస్య his, మహత్ great, ధనుః bow, చరణాభ్యామ్ with claws, బభఞ్జ broke.

Powerful Jatayu scattered the shower of arrows with his wings and broke down the great bow with his claws.
తచ్చాగ్నిసదృశం దీప్తం రావణస్య శరావరమ్.

పక్షాభ్యాం స మహావీర్యో వ్యాధునోత్పతగేశ్వరః৷৷3.51.15৷৷


మహావీర్యః mighty, సః Jatayu, పతగేశ్వరః lord of the birds, రావణస్య Ravana's, అగ్నిసదృశమ్ burning like fire, దీప్తమ్ glowing, తత్ that, శరావరమ్ armour, పక్షాభ్యామ్ with the wings, వ్యాధునోత్ tore asunder.

Mighty Jatayu, lord of the birds, shattered with his wings the armour of Ravana that was glowing like fire.
కాఞ్చనోరశ్ఛదాన్దివ్యాన్పిశాచవదనాన్ఖరాన్.

తాంశ్చాస్య జవసమ్పన్నాఞ్జఘాన సమరే బలీ৷৷3.51.16৷৷


బలీ powerful, కాఞ్చనోరశ్ఛదాన్ golden shield, దివ్యాన్ splendid, పిశాచవదనాన్ devil's face, జవసమ్పన్నాన్ endowed with great speed, తాన్ those, ఖరాన్ చ asses, సమరే in the combat, జఘాన killed.

Powerful Jatayu killed in the combat, the splendid, swift-moving, devil-faced asses with golden shields yoked to the chariot.
వరం త్రివేణుసమ్పన్నం కామగం పావకార్చిషమ్.

మణిహేమవిచిత్రాఙ్గం బభఞ్జ చ మహారథమ్৷৷3.51.17৷৷


వరమ్ excellent, త్రివేణుసమ్పన్నమ్ endowed with three bamboo reeds, కామగమ్ go wherever one desired, పావకార్చిషమ్ glowing like fire, మణిహేమవిచిత్రాఙ్గమ్ glittering with gold and gems, మహారథమ్ great chariot, బభఞ్జ broke.

Then he(Jatayu) broke down the great chariot(of Ravana) glowing like fire, glittering with gold and gems, made of three bamboo reeds, and capable of flying wherever the rider willed.
పూర్ణచన్ద్రప్రతీకాశం ఛత్రం చ వ్యజనైస్సహ.

పాతయామాస వేగేన గ్రాహిభీ రాక్షసైస్సహ৷৷3.51.18৷৷


పూర్ణచన్ద్రప్రతీకాశమ్ shining like the full moon, ఛత్రం చ parasol also, వ్యజనైః సహ with the fans, గ్రాహిభిః with those holding them, రాక్షసైః సహ along with the demons, వేగేన violently, పాతయామాస pulled down.

Jatayu violently pulled down the parasol shining like the full moon and the fans of the chariot along with the demons holding them.
సారథేశ్చాస్య వేగేన తుణ్డేనైవ మహచ్ఛిరః.

పునర్వ్యపాహరచ్ఛ్రీమాన్పక్షిరాజో మహాబలః৷৷3.51.19৷৷


పునః again, మహాబలః powerful, శ్రీమాన్ glorious, పక్షిరాజః king of the birds, అస్య his, సారథేః charioteer, మహత్ huge, శిరః head, వేగేన తుణ్డేనైవ violently with the beak, వ్యపాహరత్ shattered.

Again the glorious, powerful king of birds swiftly shattered the huge head of the charioteer with his beak.
స భగ్నధన్వా విరథో హతాశ్వో హతసారథిః.

అఙ్కేనాదాయ వైదేహీం పపాత భువి రావణః৷৷3.51.20৷৷


భగ్నధన్వా with the bow broken, విరథః chariot destroyed, హతాశ్వః asses (drawing the chariot) dead, హతసారథిః charioteer killed, సః రావణః that Ravana, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, అఙ్కేన on his lap, ఆదాయ held, భువి on to the ground, పపాత fell.

With the bow broken, the chariot destroyed, asses (drawing the chariot) and the charioteer dead, Ravana fell down on the ground holding Vaidehi on his lap.
దృష్ట్వా నిపతితం భూమౌ రావణం భగ్నవాహనమ్.

సాధుసాధ్వితి భూతాని గృధ్రరాజమపూజయన్৷৷3.51.21৷৷


భగ్నవాహనమ్ with the broken chariot, భూమౌ on the ground, నిపతితమ్ fallen down, రావణమ్ Ravana, దృష్ట్వా seeing, సాధు సాధు ఇతి staying well done, well done, భూతాని all beings, గృధ్రరాజమ్ king of the birds, అపూజయన్ honoured.

Seeing Ravana fallen on the ground with his broken chariot, all beings honoured the king of the birds, saying, Well done! Well done!
పరిశ్రాన్తం తు తం దృష్టవా జరయా పక్షియూథపమ్.

ఉత్పపాత పునర్హృష్టో మైథిలీం గృహ్య రావణః৷৷3.51.22৷৷


పక్షియూథపమ్ the lord of the flocks of birds (Jatayu), తమ్ him, జరయా with old age, పరిశ్రాన్తమ్ exhausted (after a long fight), దృష్ట్వా seeing, రావణః Ravana, హృష్టః glad, మైథిలీమ్ Maithili, గృహ్య took, పునః again, ఉత్పపాత flew into the sky.

Seeing the lord of the flocks of birds exhausted due to age still fighting, Ravana felt glad. He flew back into the sky taking Sita, princess of Mithila, with him.
తం ప్రహృష్టం నిధాయాఙ్కే గచ్ఛన్తం జనకాత్మజామ్.

గృధ్రరాజస్సముత్పత్య సమభిద్రుత్య రావణమ్৷৷3.51.23৷৷

సమావార్య మహాతేజా జటాయురిదమబ్రవీత్.


గృధ్రరాజః king of the vultures, మహాతేజాః mighty, జటాయుః Jatayu, సముత్పత్య flew up.ప్రహృష్టమ్ happy, జనకాత్మజామ్ Janaka's daughter ( Sita), అఙ్కే on the lap, నిథాయ placed, గచ్ఛన్తమ్ while going, తం రావణమ్ to that Ravana, సమభిద్రుత్య chased, సమావార్య obstructing, ఇదమ్ this, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Seeing Sita, Janaka's daughter, happily carried away into the sky by Ravana on his lap. Jatayu, the mighty king of vultures chased him, and obstructing his path said :
వజ్రసంస్పర్శబాణస్య భార్యాం రామస్య రావణ৷৷3.51.24৷৷

అల్పబుద్ధే హరస్యేనాం వధాయ ఖలు రక్షసామ్.


అల్పబుద్ధే foolish, రావణ Ravana, వజ్రసంస్పర్శబాణస్య whose arows can hit like a thunderbolt, రామస్య Rama's, భార్యామ్ wife, ఏనామ్ this lady, రక్షసామ్ of demons, వధాయ for destruction, హరసి kidnapping.

Foolish Ravana, you are kidnapping this lady, wife of Rama, whose arrows can hit like a thunderbolt. This will lead to the destruction of all demons.
సమిత్రబన్ధుస్సామాత్యస్సబలస్సపరిచ్ఛదః৷৷3.51.25৷৷

విషపానం పిబస్యేతత్పిపాసిత ఇవోదకమ్.


మిత్రబన్ధుః along with kith and kin, సామాత్యః with ministers, సబలః with army, సపరిచ్ఛదః with all your allies, పిపాసితః thirsty man, ఉదకమివ like water, ఏతత్ this, విషపానమ్ poison, పిబసి you are drinking.

You are drinking poison along with all your friends, relatives, ministers, the army and your allies. like a thirsty man drinks water.
అనుబన్ధమజానన్తః కర్మణామవిచక్షణాః৷৷3.51.26৷৷

శీఘ్రమేవ వినశ్యన్తి యథా త్వం వినశిష్యసి.


కర్మణామ్ of the deeds, అనుబన్ధమ్ consequences, అజానన్తః not knowing, అవిచక్షణాః unwise, యథా similarly, శ్రీఘ్రమేవ soon, వినశ్యన్తి get destroyed, త్వమ్ you, వినశిష్యసి will be destroyed.

Fools who do not know the consequences of their action perish soon. Similarly you are going to die soon.
బద్ధస్త్వం కాలపాశేన క్వ గతస్తస్య మోక్ష్యసే৷৷3.51.27৷৷

వధాయ బడిశం గృహ్య సామిషం జలజో యథా.


త్వమ్ you, కాలపాశేన by the noose of death, వధాయ to die, బద్ధః are bound, సామిషమ్ with a bait, బడిశమ్ fish-hook, గృహ్య having taken, జలజః fish, యథా so also, తస్య its, క్వ గతః where can it go, మోక్ష్యసే will you get out.

You are bound by the noose of death like a fish holding on to the bait of the fishing hook. Where can you go now?
న హి జాతు దురాధర్షౌ కాకుత్స్థౌ తవ రావణ৷৷3.51.28৷৷

ధర్షణం చాశ్రమస్యాస్య క్షమిష్యేతే తు రాఘవౌ.


రావణ Ravana, దురాధర్షౌ both invincible, కాకుత్స్థౌ both Kakutsthas, రాఘవౌ Rama and Lakshmana, తవ your, అస్య ఆశ్రమస్య their hermitage, ధర్షణమ్ assault, జాతు surely, న క్షమిష్యేతే not forgive.

O Ravana ! know that Rama and Lakshmana, the Kakutsthas, are invincible. They will not forgive the asssault you have made on their hermitage.
యథా త్వయా కృతం కర్మ భీరుణా లోకగర్హితమ్৷৷3.51.29৷৷

తస్కరాచరితో మార్గో నైవ వీరనిషేవితః.


భీరుణా by a timid, త్వయా you are, యథా like this, లోకగర్హితమ్ condemned by the whole world, కర్మ act, కృతమ్ is done, తస్కరాచరితః adopted by thieves, మార్గః this path, వీరనిషేవితః followed by heroes, నైవ not at all.

Your cowardly action will be condemned by the whole world. The path you have chosen is the path of a thief and not of a hero.
యుధ్యస్వ యది శూరోసి ముహూర్తం తిష్ఠరావణ৷৷3.51.30৷৷

శయిష్యసే హతో భూమౌ యథా భ్రాతా ఖరస్తథా.


రావణ Ravana, యది if you, శూరోసి are courageous, యుధ్యస్వ may fight, ముహూర్తం for a moment, తిష్ఠ stay, భ్రాతా brother, ఖర: Khara, తథా likewise, శయిష్యసే all down, యథా as, భూమౌ on the ground, హత: killed.

O Ravana! if you are courageous, tarry awhile and fight with me. Like your brother Khara, you will lie on the ground dead.
పరేతకాలే పురుషో యత్కర్మ ప్రతిపద్యతే৷৷3.51.31৷৷

వినాశాయాత్మనోధర్మ్యం ప్రతిపన్నోసి కర్మ తత్.


పురుషః man, పరేతకాలే at the time of death, యత్ whatever, కర్మ actions, ప్రతిపద్యతే does, అధర్మ్యమ్ unrighteous, తత్ such, కర్మ action, ఆత్మనః yourself, వినాశాయ for destruction, ప్రతిపన్నః undertaken, అసి you are.

You have resorted to unrighteous action like a dying man. This will spell your destruction.
పాపానుబన్ధో వై యస్య కర్మణః కర్మకో ను తత్৷৷3.51.32৷৷

కుర్వీత లోకాధిపతిస్స్వయంభూర్భగవానపి.


యస్య by whomsoever, కర్మణః action, పాపానుబన్ధః resulting in sin, తత్ such, కర్మ action, లోకాధిపతిః lord of the world, భగవాన్ స్వయంభూరపి self-born lord (Brahma) too, కః who, కుర్వీత
may do, ను indeed, తత్ that.

If the consequences of an action be sin, who will do it ? Even the self-born lord of the world may not.
ఏవముక్త్వా శుభం వాక్యం జటాయుస్తస్య రక్షసః৷৷3.51.33৷৷

నిపపాత భృశం పృష్ఠే దశగ్రీవస్య వీర్యవాన్.


వీర్యవాన్ brave,జటాయుః Jatayu, ఏవమ్ in that manner, శుభమ్ auspicious (cautious), వాక్యమ్ words, ఉక్త్వా having said, రక్షసః of that demon, తస్య రావణస్య పృష్ఠే at Ravana's back, భృశమ్ repeatedly, నిపపాత dashed.

Brave Jatayu having thus said these cautious words to the demon dashed against his back again and again.
తం గృహీత్వా నఖైస్తీక్ష్ణైర్విదదార సమన్తతః৷৷3.51.34৷৷

అధిరూఢో గజారోహో యథా స్యాద్దుష్టవారణమ్.


(తతః thereafter), తం గృహీత్వా seizing him, అధిరూఢః ascended, గజారోహః riding on an elephant, దుష్టవారణమ్ unruly elephant, యథా so also, స్యాత్ he, తీక్ష్ణైః sharp, నఖైః claws, సమన్తతః all over, విదదార pierced.

Thereafter, seizing Ravana, Jatayu ascended on his back and pierced his body all over with his sharp claws just as a rider goads an unruly elephant.
విదదార నఖైరస్య తుణ్డం పృష్ఠే సమర్పయన్৷৷3.51.35৷৷

కేశాంశ్చోత్పాటయామాస నఖపక్షముఖాయుధః.


అస్య his, పృష్ఠే back, తుణ్డమ్ beak, సమర్పయన్ pressing, నఖైః claws, విదదార pierced, నఖపక్షముఖాయుధః a warrior with claws, wings and beak as the only weapons, కేశాంశ్చ hair too, ఉత్పాటయామాస pulled out.

Jatayu who had his claws, wings and beak as the only weapons pierced and pricked Ravana all over with his nails by pressing his beak on his back and pulled out his hair.
స తథా గృధ్రరాజేన క్లిశ్యమానో ముహుర్ముహుః৷৷3.51.36৷৷

అమర్షస్ఫురితోష్ఠస్సన్ప్రాకమ్పత చ రావణః.


గృధ్రరాజేన by the king of vultures, ముహుర్ముహుః again and again, తథా in that manner, క్లిశ్యమానః being tormented, సః రావణః he, Ravana, అమర్షఫురితోష్ఠః సన్ with his lips quivering with anger, ప్రాకమ్పత was shaken.

Thus tormented again and again by the king of vultures, Ravana shook with anger, his lips quivering.
స పరిష్వజ్య చ వైదేహీం వామేనాఙ్కేన రావణః৷৷3.51.37৷৷

తలేనాభిజఘానాశు జటాయుం క్రోధముర్ఛీతః.


రావణః Ravana, క్రోధమూర్ఛితః losing senses with rage, వామేన అఙ్కేన left arm, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, పరిష్వజ్య holding firmly, ఆశు quickly, జటాయుమ్ to Jatayu, తలేన palm, అభిజఘాన hit him.

Losing his senses, with rage, Ravana held Vaidehi (Sita) with his left arm and hit Jatayu with his palm.
జటాయుస్తమభిక్రమ్య తుణ్డేనాస్య ఖగాధిపః৷৷3.51.38৷৷

వామబాహూన్దశ తదా వ్యపాహరదరిన్దమః.


తదా then, ఖగాధిపః lord of the birds, అరిన్దమః subduer of enemies, జటాయుః Jatayu, తమ్ him, అభిక్రమ్య occupied, తుణ్డేన by his beak, అస్య Ravana's, దశ ten, వామబాహూన్ left arms, వ్యపాహరత్ cut off.

Then Jatayu, lord of the birds, subduer of enemies, overpowered Ravana and dismembered his ten left arms with his beak.
సఞ్ఛిన్నబాహోస్సద్యైవ బాహవస్సహసాభవన్৷৷3.51.39৷৷

విషజ్వాలావలీయుక్తా వల్మీకాదివ పన్నగాః.


సఞ్ఛిన్నబాహోః whose arms were cut off, బాహవః arms, సద్యైవ instantly from them, వల్మీకాత్ from an anthill, విషజ్వాలాః poisonous flames, వలీయుక్తాః emitting, పన్నగాః ఇవ like serpants, సహసా all of a sudden, అభవన్ came out.

As the left arms were cut off, there came out from them all the ten arms instantaneously like serpents emitting poisonous flames from anthills
తతః క్రోధాద్దశగ్రీవస్సీతాముత్సృజ్య రావణః৷৷3.51.40৷৷

ముష్టిభ్యాం చరణాభ్యాం చ గృధ్రరాజమపోథయత్.


తతః then, దశగ్రీవః ten-headed, రావణః Ravana, సీతామ్ Sita, ఉత్సృజ్య left, ముష్టిభ్యామ్ with his fists, చరణాభ్యాం చ and feet, గృధ్రరాజమ్ Jatayu, క్రోధాత్ with anger, అపోథయత్ attacked.

Then the ten-headed Ravana left Sita and attacked Jatayu with his fists and feet out of anger.
తతో ముహూర్తం సఙ్గ్రామో బభూవాతుల్యవీర్యయోః৷৷3.51.41৷৷

రాక్షసానాం చ ముఖ్యస్య పక్షిణాం ప్రవరస్య చ.


తతః then, అతులవీర్యయో: of unequal valour, రాక్షసానాం ముఖ్యస్య of the chief of the demons, పక్షిణాం ప్రవరస్య king of the birds, ముహూర్తమ్ for a moment, సఙ్గ్రామః fight, బభూవ took place.

Between the warriors of unequal valour, Ravana and Jatayu, the chief of the demons and the foremost of the birds, the fight took place for a moment.
తస్య వ్యాయచ్ఛమానస్య రామస్యార్థే స రావణః৷৷3.51.42৷৷

పక్షౌ పార్శ్వౌ చ పాదౌ చ ఖడ్గముద్ధృత్య సోచ్ఛినత్.


సః that, రావణః Ravana, ఖడగమ్ sword, ఉద్యమ్య after lifting, రామస్య Rama's, అర్థే for the sake of, వ్యాయచ్ఛమానస్య of one who was fighting relentlessly, తస్య his, పక్షౌ two wings, పార్శ్వౌ చ both sides, పాదౌ చ feet, అచ్ఛినత్ cut off.

Ravana lifted his sword and cut off both the wings and feet of Jatayu who was fighting relentlessly (for Rama's sake).
స చ్ఛిన్నపక్షస్సహసా రక్షసా రౌద్రకర్మణా৷৷3.51.43৷৷

నిపపాత హతో గృద్రో ధరణ్యామల్పజీవితః.


రౌద్రకర్మణా one who performs terrible deeds, రక్షసా by the demon, ఛిన్నపక్షః clipped wings, సః that, గృధ్రః vulture, హతః hurt, అల్పజీవితః with very little life left, ధరణ్యామ్ on the ground, సహసా immediately, నిపపాత fell.

(Seriously) wounded and almost dead,the vulture fell down on the ground all at once, when his wings were chipped by the demon of terrible deeds.
తం దృష్ట్వా పతితం భూమౌ క్షతజార్ద్రం జటాయుషమ్৷৷3.51.44৷৷

అభ్యధావత వైదేహీ స్వబన్ధుమివ దుఃఖితా.


వైదేహీ Sita, princess of Videha, భూమౌ on the ground, పతితమ్ fallen down, క్షతజార్ద్రమ్ drenched in blood , తం జటాయుషమ్ that Jatayu, దృష్ట్వా seeing, దుఃఖితా grieved, స్వబన్ధుమివ as if he was her relative, అభ్యధావత ran towards him.

Sita, princess of Videha, saw the wounded Jatayu fallen on the ground drenched in blood. Grieving, she ran towards him as if he was her relative.
తం నీలజీమూతనికాశకల్పం సుపాణ్డురోరస్కముదారవీర్యమ్.

దదర్శ లఙ్కాధిపతిః పృథివ్యాం జటాయుషం శాన్తమివాగ్నిదావమ్৷৷3.51.45৷৷


లఙ్కాధిపతిః lord of Lanka, నీలజీమూతనికాశకాయమ్ of colour like the dark bluish cloud,
సుపాణ్డురోరస్కమ్ of fair chest, ఉదారవీర్యమ్ bold, శాన్తమ్ made calm, అగ్నిదావమివ like the forest fire, తం జటాయుషమ్ that Jatayu, పృథివ్యామ్ on the ground, దదర్శ saw.

Lord of Lanka saw that very bold Jatayu of dark blue colour of the cloud, fair chest, fallen on the ground, looking like the forest fire that had been put out.
తతస్తు తం పత్రరథం మహీతలే నిపాతితం రావణవేగమర్దితమ్.

పునః పరిశ్వజ్య శశిప్రభాననా రురోద సీతా జనకాత్మజాతదా৷৷3.51.46৷৷


తతః then, శశిప్రభాననా with her face like the radiant moon, జనకాత్మజా Janaka's daughter, సీతా Sita, తాం him, రావణవేగమర్థితమ్ crushed by Ravana's onslaught, మహీతలే on the ground, నిపాతితమ్ fallen, తం పత్రరథమ్ that bird who rides on wings, పునః again, పరిష్వజ్య took hold of him, రురోద wept.

Sita, daughter of Janaka, whose face was radiant like the Moon once again embraced Jatayu, the winged warrior, fallen on the ground, crushed by Ravana's onslaught and wept.
ఇతయార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే ఏకపఞ్చాశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyfirst sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
