Sloka & Translation

[Sita puls a few ornaments in bundles and throws them down in the midst of vanaras-- she hopes somebody will communicate this to Rama.]

హ్రియమాణా తు వైదేహీ కఞ్చిన్నాథమపశ్యతీ.

దదర్శ గిరిశృఙ్గస్థాన్పఞ్చ వానరపుఙ్గవాన్৷৷3.54.1৷৷


హ్రియమాణా taken away, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, నాథమ్ protector, కఞ్చిత్ some one, అపశ్యతీ not seeing, గిరిశృఙ్గస్థాన్ standing on the peak of the mountain, పఞ్చ five, వానరపుఙ్గవాన్ great monkeys, దదర్శ saw.

While Sita was being kidnapped, she saw no one to protect her. Only five great monkeys stood on the top of a mountain.
తేషాం మధ్యే విశాలాక్షీ కౌశేయం కనకప్రభమ్.

ఉత్తరీయం వరారోహా శుభాన్యాభరణాని చ৷৷3.54.2৷৷

ముమోచ యది రామాయ శంసేయురితి మైథిలీ.


విశాలాక్షీ large- eyed, వరారోహా charming, భామినీ effulgent, కనకప్రభమ్ shining like gold, కౌశేయమ్ silk, ఉత్తరీయమ్ upper cloth, శుభాని auspicious, ఆభరణాని చ ornaments also, రామాయ for Rama, యది if at all, శంసేయుః they may tell, ఇతి thus, తేషామ్ them, మధ్యే between, ముమోచ dropped.

Large-eyed, bright and beautiful Sita dropped her upper silk garment shining like gold and auspicious ornaments in their midst with a hope they may report this to Rama.
వస్త్రముత్సృజ్య తన్మధ్యే నిక్షిప్తం సహభూషణమ్৷৷3.54.3৷৷

సమ్భ్రమాత్తు దశగ్రీవస్తత్కర్మ న స బుద్ధవాన్.


సహభూషణమ్ along with ornaments, వస్త్రమ్ clothes, ఉత్సృజ్య discarding, తన్మధ్యే in their midst, నిక్షిప్తమ్ thrown down, సః దశగ్రీవః that ten-headed Ravana, సమ్భ్రమాత్ due to excitement, తత్ that, కర్మ action of Sita, న బుద్ధవాన్ did not know.

In his excitement Ravana failed to notice when Sita dropped down that garment along with ornaments in their midst.
పిఙ్గాక్షాస్తాం విశాలాక్షీం నేత్రైరనిమిషైరివ৷৷3.54.4৷৷

విక్రోశన్తీం తథా సీతాం దదృశుర్వానరర్షభాః.


పిఙ్గాక్షాః tawney- eyed, వానరర్షభాః best among monkeys, విశాలాక్షీమ్ large-eyed, తథా like that, విక్రోశన్తీమ్ lamenting, తాం సీతామ్ that Sita, అనిమిషైరివ without blinking, నేత్రైః eyes, దదృశుః gazed at.

The best among the tawney-eyed monkeys gazed, without blinking, at the large-eyed Sita lamenting.
స చ పమ్పామతిక్రమ్య లఙ్కామభిముఖః పురీమ్৷৷3.54.5৷৷

జగామ రుదతీం గృహ్య వైదేహీం రాక్షసేశ్వరః.


సః రాక్షసేశ్వరః that lord of the demons, పమ్పామ్ Pampa, అతిక్రమ్య on crossing, లఙ్కాం పురీమ్ to the city of Lanka, అభిముఖః towards, రుదతీమ్ crying, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, గృహ్య taking, జగామ went.

Ravana crossed the lake Pampa and flew towards the city of Lanka carrying with him lamenting daughter of Videha.
తాం జహార సుసంహృష్టో రావణో మృత్యుమాత్మనః৷৷3.54.6৷৷

ఉత్సఙ్గేనేవ భుజగీం తీక్ష్ణదంష్ట్రాం మహావిషామ్.


రావణః Ravana, సుసంహృష్టః delighted, ఆత్మనః his own, మృత్యుమ్ death, తామ్ her, తీక్ష్ణదంష్ట్రామ్ sharp fanged, మహావిషామ్ highly poisonous, భుజగీమ్ female snake, ఉత్సఙ్గేనేవ on his lap, జహార carried.

Delighted Ravana, carried off Sita, the very embodiment of his death, like one carrying a highly poisonous sharp-fanged female snake on his lap.
వనాని సరితశ్శైలాంత్సరాంసి చ విహాయసా৷৷3.54.7৷৷

స క్షిప్రం సమతీయాయ శరశ్చాపాదివ చ్యుతః.


సః he, చాపాత్ from the bow, చ్యుతః released, శరః ఇవ like an arrow, క్షిప్రమ్ at once, వనాని forests, సరితః rivers, శైలాన్ mountains, సరాంసి చ tanks, విహాయసా through the sky, సమతీయాయ crossed.

Like an arrow released from the bow, Ravana went through the sky, at once crossing forests, rivers mountains and tanks.
తిమినక్రనికేతం తు వరుణాలయమక్షయమ్৷৷3.54.8৷৷

సరితాం శరణం గత్వా సమతీయాయ సాగరమ్.


తిమినక్రనికేతమ్ the abode of whales and crocodiles, అక్షయమ్ inexhaustible,సరితాం శరణమ్ refuge of all rivers, వరుణాలయమ్ abode Varuna, god of the sea, గత్వా having covered, సాగరమ్ ocean, సమతీయాయ crossed.

Ravana soon crossed the refuge of rivers, the abode of Varuna, god of the sea, inexhaustible ocean, and the home for whales and crocodiles.
సమ్భ్రమాత్పరివృత్తోర్మీ రుద్ధమీనమహోరగః৷৷3.54.9৷৷

వైదేహ్యాం హ్రియమాణాయాం బభూవ వరుణాలయః.


వైదేహ్యామ్ to Sita, daughter of Videha, హ్రియమాణాయామ్ was being carried away, వరుణాలయః the abode of Varuna, the ocean, సమ్భ్రమాత్ out of bewilderment, పరివృత్తోర్మిః waves turned back, రుద్ధమీనమహోరగః movement of big serpents and fishes stopped, బభూవ became.

While Sita, princess of Videha was being carried away, the ocean, abode of Varuna
got bewildered, waves rolled back, the movement of big serpents and fishes stopped.
అన్తరిక్షగతా వాచస్ససృజుశ్చారణాస్తదా৷৷3.54.10৷৷

ఏతదన్తో దశగ్రీవ ఇతి సిద్ధాస్తదాబ్రువన్.


తదా then, అన్తరిక్షగతాః flying in the sky, చారణాః bards, దశగ్రీవః ten-headed Ravana, ఏతదన్తః ఇతి this is the end, వాచః words, ససృజుః spoke, తదా then, సిద్ధాః siddhas, అబ్రువన్ uttered.

The charanas and siddhas moving in the sky said, O ten-headed Ravana! this is your end .
స తు సీతాం వివేష్టన్తీమఙ్కేనాదాయ రావణః৷৷3.54.11৷৷

ప్రవివేశ పురీం లఙ్కాం రూపిణీం మృత్యుమాత్మనః.


సః రావణః that Ravana, ఆత్మనః his own, రూపిణీమ్ personified form, మృత్యుమ్ death, వివేష్టన్తీమ్ struggling, సీతామ్ Sita, అఙ్కేన by his arm, ఆదాయ holding her, లఙ్కాం పురీమ్ city of Lanka, ప్రవివేశ entered.

Ravana entered the city of Lanka holding Sita who was tossing from side to side and who was the very embodiment of his death.
సోభిగమ్య పురీం లఙ్కాం సువిభక్తమహాపథామ్৷৷3.54.12৷৷

సంరూఢకక్ష్యాబహులం స్వమన్తఃపురమావిశత్.


సః Ravana, సువిభక్తమహాపథామ్ well laid-out roads, లఙ్కాం పురీమ్ city of Lanka, అభిగమ్య entering, సంరూఢకక్ష్యాబహులమ్ with many well-guarded halls, స్వమ్ his, అన్తఃపురమ్ inner apartment, ఆవిశత్ entered.

Ravana went through the well laid-out roads of the city of Lanka and through the well many guarded halls of the palace and entered the inner apartment.
తత్ర తామసితాపాఙ్గాం శోకమోహపరాయణామ్৷৷3.54.13৷৷

నిదధే రావణస్సీతాం మయో మాయామివస్త్రియమ్.


రావణః Ravana, అసితాపాఙ్గామ్ a lady of dark eye-lashes, శోకమోహపరాయణామ్ lady lost in sorrow, తాం సీతామ్ that Sita, మయః demon Maya, మాయామివ like Maya, తత్ర there ( in the harem), నదధే kept.

Sita, with her dark eye lashes and lost in utter sorrow was kept in the harem by Ravana, like demon Maya kept Mayamayi.
అబ్రవీచ్చ దశగ్రీవః పిశాచీర్ఘోరదర్శనాః৷৷3.54.14৷৷

యథా నేమాం పుమాన్ స్త్రీ వా సీతాం పశ్యత్యసమ్మతః.


దశగ్రీవః ten-headed Ravana, ఘోరదర్శనాః of fearful appearance, పిశాచీః female goblins, అబ్రవీత్ చ said, అసమ్మతః without my permission, పుమాన్ man, స్త్రీ వా or a woman, ఇమామ్ this lady, సీతామ్ Sita, యథా in a way, న పశ్యతి will not see.

Ravana ordered the female goblins of fearful appearance,'Let no outsider whether man or woman, see her, without my permission'.
ముక్తామణిసువర్ణాని వస్త్రాణ్యాభరణాని చ৷৷3.54.15৷৷

యద్యదిచ్ఛేత్తదేవాస్యా దేయం మచ్ఛన్దతో యథా.


ముక్తామణిసువర్ణాని pearls, gems or gold, వస్త్రాణి clothes, ఆభరణాని చ and ornaments, యత్ యత్ whatever, ఇచ్ఛేత్ she desires, తదేవ all that, అస్యాః to her, మచ్ఛన్దతో యథా without hesitation, దేయమ్ should be given.

Pearls, gems or gold, clothes or ornaments, whatever she desires, be made available to her without any hesitation.
యా చ వక్ష్యతి వైదేహీం వచనం కిఞ్చిదప్రియమ్৷৷3.54.16৷৷

అజ్ఞానాద్యది వా జ్ఞానాన్న తస్యా జీవితం ప్రియమ్.


యా చ whosoever, అజ్ఞానాత్ out of ignorance, జ్ఞానాత్ knowingly, వైదేహీమ్ to Vaidehi, కిఞ్చిత్ even a little, అప్రియమ్ displeasing, వచనమ్ words, వక్ష్యతి utters, తస్యాః her, జీవితమ్ life, న not, ప్రియమ్ worthy,

Whoever utters any unpleasant words knowingly or unknowingly to Sita, princess of Videha is not worthy to survive (must be killed).
తథోక్త్వా రాక్షసీస్తాస్తు రాక్షసేన్ద్రః ప్రతాపవాన్৷৷3.54.17৷৷

నిష్క్రమ్యాన్తః పురాత్తస్మాత్కింకృత్యమితి చిన్తయన్.

దదర్శాష్టౌ మహావీర్యాన్రాక్షసాన్పిశితాశనాన్৷৷3.54.18৷৷


ప్రతాపవాన్ courageous, రాక్షసేన్ద్రః lord of demons (Ravana), రాక్షసీః demoness, తథా likewise, ఉక్త్వా having said so, తస్మాత్ from that, అన్తఃపురాత్ from the inner apartments, నిష్క్రమ్య coming out, కిమ్ what, కృత్యమ్ can be done, చిన్తయన్ while thinking, మహావీర్యాన్ most powerful ones, పిశితాశనాన్ flesheaters, అష్టౌ eight, రాక్షసాన్ demons, దదర్శ saw.

The courageous lord of the demons, having said so to the demonesses, came out of the inner apartment. While contemplating the future course of action, he saw eight powerful, carnivorous demons.
స తాన్దృష్ట్వా మహావీర్యో వరదానేన మోహితః.

ఉవాచైతానిదం వాక్యం ప్రశస్య బలవీర్యతః৷৷3.54.19৷৷


తాన్దృష్ట్వా seeing them, మహావీర్యః mighty, వరదానేన by the boons, మోహితః a deluded one, సః he, బలవీర్యతః about their strength, ప్రశస్య after praising them, ఏతాన్ them, ఇదమ్ this, వాక్యమ్ word, ఉవాచ said.

The mighty Ravana, deluded by the boons, praised the strength and valour of the demons and said :
నానాప్రహరణాః క్షిప్రమితో గచ్ఛత సత్వరాః.

జనస్థానం హతస్థానం భూతపూర్వం ఖరాలయమ్৷৷3.54.20৷৷


నానాప్రహరణాః a variety of weapons, సత్వరాః very quickly, ఇతః from here, క్షిప్రమ్ at once, హతస్థానమ్ where he was slain, ఖరాలయమ్ the abode of Khara, భూతపూర్వమ్ the earlier (dwelling), జనస్థానమ్ Janasthana, గచ్ఛత you may go.

Armed with different weapons, proceed at once to Janasthana where Khara lived and died.
తత్రోష్యతాం జనస్థానే శూన్యే నిహతరాక్షసే.

పౌరుషం బలమాశ్రిత్య త్రాసముత్సృజ్య దూరతః৷৷3.54.21৷৷


పౌరుషమ్ prowess, బలమ్ vigour, ఆశ్రిత్య relying on, త్రాసమ్ fear, దూరతః leaving, ఉత్సృజ్య given up, నిహతరాక్షసే where all demons were killed, శూన్యే desolate, తత్ర there, జనస్థానే at Janasthana, ఉష్యతామ్ dwell there.

Go and there in the desolate Janasthana where all demons had been killed, leaving all your apprehensions and relying on your strength and vigour.
బలం హి సుమహద్యన్మే జనస్థానే నివేశితమ్.

సదూషణఖరం యుద్ధే హతం రామేణ సాయకైః৷৷3.54.22৷৷


మే mine, సుమహత్ very great, యత్ since, బలమ్ army, జనస్థానే at Janasthana, నివేశితమ్ had stationed, సదూషణఖరమ్ with Dusana and Khara, రామేణ by Rama, సాయకైః arrows, హతమ్ killed.

I had stationed a great army at Janasthana, who were all killed along with Khara and Dusana by Rama's arrows.
తత క్రోధో మమామర్షాద్ధైర్యస్యోపరి వర్తతే.

వైరం చ సుమహజ్జాతం రామం ప్రతి సుదారుణమ్৷৷3.54.23৷৷


తతః then, మమ my, అమర్షాత్ due to that intolerance, క్రోధః wrath, ధైర్యస్య one's patience, ఉపరి over and above, వర్తతే is arising, రామం ప్రతి towards Rama, సుమహత్ very great, సుదారుణమ్ terrific, వైరం చ enmity, జాతమ్ is created.

My anger engineered by my intolerance has crossed the limits of my patience. It has created in me a terrific enmity against Rama.
నిర్యాతయితుమిచ్ఛామి తచ్చ వైరమహం రిపోః.

న హి లప్స్యామ్యహం నిద్రామహత్వా సంయుగే రిపుమ్৷৷3.54.24৷৷


అహమ్ I am, రిపోః enemy, తత్ that, నిర్యాతయితుమ్ avenge, ఇచ్ఛామి I am desirous, సంయుగే in combat, రిపుమ్ enemy, అహత్వా without slaying, అహమ్ I, నిద్రామ్ sleep, న లప్స్యామి హి I am not getting.

I want to take revenge on my foe. I shall not sleep until I kill him in a combat.
తం త్విదానీమహం హత్వా ఖరదూషణఘాతినమ్.

రామం శర్మోపలప్స్యామి ధనం లబ్ధ్వేవ నిర్ధనః৷৷3.54.25৷৷


అహమ్ I am, ఇదానీమ్ now, ఖరదూషణఘాతినమ్ the killer of Khara and Dusana, తమ్ him, రామమ్ Rama, హత్వా after slaying, నిర్ధనః one without wealth, ధనమ్ wealth, లబ్ధ్వా having acquired, ఇవ like that, శర్మ pleasure, ఉపలప్స్యామి I will have.

I will be happy only after killing the destroyer of Khara and Dusana, just as a poor man feels happy only on acquiring wealth.
జనస్థానే వసద్భిస్తు భవద్భీరామమాశ్రితా.

ప్రవృత్తిరుపనేతవ్యా కిఞ్కరోతీతి తత్త్వతః৷৷3.54.26৷৷


జనస్థానే at Janasthana, వసద్భి: while dwelling, భవద్భి: by you all, కిం what, కరోతి ఇతి he does, రామమ్ Rama, ఆశ్రితా pertaining to, ప్రవృత్తి: activities, తత్త్వతః exactly, ఉపనేతవ్యా get the
information.

While dwelling at Janasthana, all of you should collect exact information about the activities of Rama.
అప్రమాదాచ్చ గన్తవ్యం సర్వైరపి నిశాచరైః.

కర్తవ్యశ్చ సదా యత్నో రాఘవస్య వధం ప్రతి৷৷3.54.27৷৷


నిశాచరైః by night-rangers, సర్వైరపి by all of them, అప్రమాదాత్ alertly, గన్తవ్యమ్ go there, రాఘవస్య Rama's, వధం ప్రతి to slay Rama, సదా always, యత్నః effort, కర్తవ్యశ్చ should be done.

All of you, O night-rangers, should be on the alert there and it should be always your duty to try to kill Rama.
యుష్మాకం చ బలజ్ఞోహం బహుశో రణమూర్ధని.

అతశ్చాస్మిన్ జనస్థానే మయా యూయం నియోజితాః৷৷3.54.28৷৷


అహమ్ I, రణమూర్ధని on war front, బహుశః many times, యుష్మాకమ్ your, బలజ్ఞః knower of strength, అతశ్చ therefore, యూయమ్ you, అస్మిన్ in this, జనస్థానే at Janasthana, మయా by me, నియోజితాః are engaged.

I have seen your strength on many war fronts. That is why you have been assigned this duty at Janasthana.
తతః ప్రియం వాక్యముపేత్య రాక్షసా మహార్థమష్టావభివాద్య రావణమ్.

విహాయ లఙ్కాం సహితాః ప్రతస్థిరే యతో జనస్థానమలక్ష్యదర్శనాః৷৷3.54.29৷৷


తతః then, అష్టౌ eight, రాక్షసాః demons, ప్రియమ్ dear, మహార్థమ్ words of profound meaningl, వాక్యమ్ statement, ఉపేత్య after receiving, రావణమ్ Ravana, అభివాద్య offering salutations, లఙ్కామ్ Lanka, విహాయ leaving, సహితాః together, అలక్ష్యదర్శనాః without being seen by any one, జనస్థానమ్ to Janasthana, యతః in that direction, ప్రతస్థిరే left.

The eight demons were glad to hear the pleasing and meaningful words of Ravana. They offered him salutations and left Lanka in the direction of Janasthana without being seen by any one.
తతస్తు సీతాముపలభ్య రావణః సుసమ్ప్రహృష్టః పరిగృహ్య మైథిలీమ్.

ప్రసజ్య రామేణ చ వైరముత్తమం బభూవ మోహాన్ముదితస్సరాక్షసః৷৷3.54.30৷৷


తతః then, రాక్షసః the demons, సః రావణః that Ravana, సీతామ్ Sita, ఉపలభ్య seeing, మైథిలీమ్ Maithili, పరిగృహ్య getting, సుసమ్ప్రహృష్టః feeling extremely happy, రామేణ at Rama, ఉత్తమమ్ highest, వైరమ్ enmity, ప్రసజ్య incited, మోహాత్ in delusion, ముదితః rejoiced, బభూవ became.

Then the demon Ravana felt greatly happy for getting Sita, princess of Mithila, without knowing in his delusion that he had created the bitterest enmity with Rama.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వామలీకీయే ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే చతుఃపఞ్చాశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
