[Ravana takes Sita to his palace -- shows her round the mansion, the wealth, attendants etc. to lure her -- persuades her to accept him.]

sandiśya rākṣasānghōrān rāvaṇō.ṣṭau mahābalān.

ātmānaṅ buddhivaiklabyātkṛtakṛtyamamanyata৷৷3.55.1৷৷


rāṇavaḥ Ravana, mahābalān very powerful, dhōrān fierce, aṣṭau eight, rākṣasān demons, sandiśya ordered, buddhivaiklabyāt out of perversion, ātmānam himself, kṛtakṛtyam an accomplished one, amanyata felt.

After ordering the eight most fierce and powerful demons, Ravana had a sense of accomplishment within himself because of his perverse intellect.
sa cintayānō vaidēhīṅ kāmabāṇasamarpitaḥ.

pravivēśa gṛhaṅ ramyaṅ sītāṅ draṣṭumabhitvaran৷৷3.55.2৷৷


saḥ he (Ravana), vaidēhīm Vaidehi, cintayānaḥ thinking about, kāmabāṇaiḥ samarpitaḥ succumbed to the arrows of Cupid (the god of love), sītām Sita, draṣṭum to see, abhitvaran hastened, ramyam beautiful, gṛham home, pravivēśa entered again.

Thinking about Vaidehi and hit by the arrows of Cupid (the god of love). Ravana hastened to see Sita and entered the beautiful home.
sa praviśya tu tadvēśma rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ.

apaśyadrākṣasīmadhyē sītāṅ śōkaparāyaṇām৷৷3.55.3৷৷


rākṣasādhipaḥ lord of the demons, saḥ rāvaṇaḥ that Ravana, tat that, vēśma residence, praviśya entered, rākṣasīmadhyē in the midst of demonesses, śōkaparāyaṇām full of grief, sītām Sita, apaśyat saw.

Ravana, lord of the demons, entered his residence and saw Sita full of grief in the midst of the demonesses.
aśrupūrṇamukhīṅ dīnāṅ śōkabhārābhipīḍitām.

vāyuvēgairivākrāntāṅ majjantīṅ nāvamarṇavē৷৷3.55.4৷৷

mṛgayūthaparibhraṣṭāṅ mṛgīṅ śvabhirivāvṛtām.

adhōmukhamukhīṅ sītāmabhyētya ca niśācaraḥ৷৷3.55.5৷৷

tāṅ tu śōkaparāṅ dīnāmavaśāṅ rākṣasādhipaḥ.

sa balāddarśayāmāsa gṛhaṅ dēvagṛhōpamam৷৷3.55.6৷৷


aśrupūrṇamukhīm with face full of tears, dīnām piteous , śōkabhārābhipīḍitām inflicted with the burden of sorrow, vāyuvēgaiḥ driven by the wind, (sam)ākrāntām overpowered, arṇavē in the sea, majjantīm sinking, nāvamiva like a boat, mṛgayūthaparibhraṣṭām separated from the herd, śvabhiḥ by hounds, āvṛtām surrounded by, mṛgīmiva like a female deer, adhōmukhamukhīm with head bent, sītām to Sita, niśācara: demon, abhyētya having gone near, śōkaparām lady full of grief, dīnām pathetic woman, avaśām not under her own control, tām her, saḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ king of the demons(Ravana), balāt forcibly, dēvagṛhōpamam like a heavenly home, gṛham home, darśayāmāsa showed.

The demon Ravana forcibly took Sita, her face full of tears, to show her his heaven-like home. Inflicted with grief she looked wretched. She resembled a female deer hounded out of the herd. With her head bent in grief, she looked pathetic like one not under her control, like a boat sinking under the sea driven by the wind.
harmyaprāsādasambādhaṅ strīsahasraniṣēvitam.

nānāpakṣigaṇairjuṣṭaṅ nānāratnasamanvitam৷৷3.55.7৷৷

dāntakaistāpanīyaiśca sphāṭikai rājatairapi.

vajravaiḍūryacitraiśca stambhairdṛṣṭimanōharaiḥ৷৷3.55.8৷৷

divyadundubhinirhrādaṅ taptakāñcanatōraṇam.


harmyaprāsādasambādham complex of palaces, strīsahasraniṣēvitam served by thousands of women, nānāpakṣigaṇaiḥ by different flocks of birds, juṣṭam attended, nānāratnasamanvitam studded with a variety of gems, dāntakaiḥ with ivory, tāpanīyaiḥ ca and golden, sphāṭikaiḥ crystals, rājatairapi silver, vajravaiḍūryacitraiḥ diamonds and vaiduryas, dṛṣṭimanōharaiḥ captivating, stambhaiḥ with pillars, divyadundubhinirhrādam resounding with wonderful drums, taptakāñcanatōraṇam having glittering golden entrance.

His home was a complex of palaces and mansions served by thousands of women. It was an abode of different flocks of birds. It had captivating pillars studded with gold, crystals, silver, diamonds and vaiduryas. It resounded with wonderful sounds of drums. Its golden entrances were glittering.
sōpānaṅ kāñcanaṅ citramārurōha tayā saha৷৷3.55.9৷৷

dāntakā rājatāścaiva gavākṣāḥ priyadarśanāḥ.

hēmajālāvatāścāsanstatra prāsādapaṅktayaḥ৷৷3.55.10৷৷


kāñcanam gold, citram wonderful, sōpānam staircase, tayā saha along with her, ārurōha he climbed, tatra there, dāntakāḥ ivory, rājatāśca silver, priyadarśanāḥ beautiful, gavākṣāḥ windows, hēmajālāvṛtāḥ covered by golden trellis, prāsādapaṅtkayaḥ rows of mansions, āsan there were.

He ascended the wonderful golden staircase taking Sita along with him.Beautiful looked the rows of mansions with silver and ivory windows and golden trellis.
sudhāmaṇivicitrāṇi bhūmibhāgāni sarvaśaḥ.

daśagrīvassvabhavanē prādarśayata maithilīm৷৷3.55.11৷৷


daśagrīvaḥ the ten-headed Ravana, svabhavanē in his own mansion, sarvaśaḥ all over, sudhāmaṇivicitrāṇi with wonderful crystals, bhūmibhāgāni the floors, maithilīm to Sita, the princess from Mithila, prādarśayata showed.

The ten-headed Ravana showed Sita, the princess from Mithila the floors with wonderful crystals.
dīrghikāḥ puṣkariṇyaśca nānāvṛkṣasamanvitāḥ.

rāvaṇō darśayāmāsa sītāṅ śōkaparāyaṇām৷৷3.55.12৷৷


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, dīrghikāḥ step-wells, nānāvṛkṣasamanvitāḥ full of different kinds of trees, puṣkariṇyaśca lotus tanks, śōkaparāyaṇām in deep sorrow, sītām Sita, darśayāmāsa showed.

Ravana showed Sita who was overwhelmed with sorrow, step-wells surrrounded by various trees and tanks.
darśayitvā tu vaidēhyāḥ kṛtsnaṅ tadbhavanōttamam.

uvāca vākyaṅ pāpātmā sītāṅ lōbhitumicchayā৷৷3.55.13৷৷


pāpātmā sinner, kṛtsnam entirely, tat that, bhavanōttamam best of mansions, vaidēhyāḥ to Vaidehi, darśayitvā on showing, sītām Sita, icchayā desiring to, lōbhitum to allure, vākyam these words, uvāca said.

The sinful Ravana showed Sita, princess of Videha, the best of all his mansions in order to allure her, saying:
daśa rākṣasakōṭyaśca dvāviṅśatirathāparāḥ.

tēṣāṅ prabhurahaṅ sītē sarvēṣāṅ bhīmakarmaṇām৷৷3.55.14৷৷

varjayitvā jarāvṛddhānbālāṅśca rajanīcarān.


sītē O Sita, jarāvṛddhān the aged, bālāṅśca children, rajanīcarān night- rangers, varjayitvā apart from, daśa ten, rākṣasakōṭyaśca crores of demons, atha and, aparāḥ over that, dvāviṅśatiḥ twentytwo crore, bhīmakarmaṇām terrorists, tēṣām them, sarvēṣām for all, aham I am, prabhuḥ the king.

O Sita, leaving aside children and the aged, I am the lord of crores of night-rangers in addition to ten crore demons and twentytwo crore terrorists.
sahasramēkamēkasya mama kāryapurassaram৷৷3.55.15৷৷

yadidaṅ rājatantraṅ mē tvayi sarvaṅ pratiṣṭhitam.

jīvitaṅ ca viśālākṣi tvaṅ mē prāṇairgarīyasī৷৷3.55.16৷৷


ēkasya for me alone, mama for me, ēkam one, sahasram thousand, kāryapurassaram attending, yat since, idam this, rājyatantram the administration of the kingdom, sarvam all, jīvitaṅ ca life also, tvayi you, pratiṣṭhitam is resting, viśālākṣi O large-eyed lady, tvam you, mē my, prāṇaiḥ more than life, garīyasī dearer.

For me alone there are a thousand attendants.The administration of the kingdom and all my subjects will be under your control. O large-eyed Sita! you are dearer to me than my life.
bahūnāṅstrīsahasrāṇāṅ mama yō.sau parigrahaḥ.

tāsāṅ tvamīśvarā sītē mama bhāryā bhava priyē৷৷3.55.17৷৷


sītē Sita, bahūnām of many, strī sahasrāṇām thousands of women, yaḥ such, asau this, parigrahaḥ married to me, tāsām to all of them, tvam you, īśvarī chief, bhava be, priyē O dear, mama my, bhāryā wife, bhava be.

O Sita dear ! be my chief queen among the many thousands of women I have married.
sādhu kiṅ tē.nyayā buddhyā rōcayasva vacō mama.

bhajasvamābhitaptasya prasādaṅ kartumarhasi৷৷3.55.18৷৷


tē to you, anyayā by another, buddhyā by thought, kim what, sādhu be good, mama vacaḥ my words, rōcayasva you may accept, abhitaptasya consumed by thoughts of you, mama me, prasādam grace, kartum to do, arhasi should.

Do not think otherwise. Be good and accept my request. I am consumed by thoughts of you. You should be gracious to me.
parikṣiptā samudrēṇa laṅkēyaṅ śatayōjanā.

nēyaṅ dharṣayituṅ śakyā sēndrairapi surāsuraiḥ৷৷3.55.19৷৷


śatayōjanā extinding to a hundred yojanas, iyam this, laṅkā Lanka, samudrēṇa by the sea, parikṣiptā surrounded, sēndraiḥ by deities including Indra, surāsurai rapi even sods and demons, iyam this, dharṣayitum to assault, na śakyā not possible.

This Lanka extending to a hundred yojanas and surrounded by the sea is vulnerable to neither demons nor gods including Indra.
na dēvēṣu na yakṣēṣu na gandharvēṣu pakṣiṣu.

ahaṅ paśyāmi lōkēṣu yō mē vīryasamō bhavēt৷৷3.55.20৷৷


lōkēṣu in the world, yaḥ whoever, mē to me, vīryasamaḥ equal in valour, bhavēt may be, aham I, dēvēṣu among gods, na paśyāmi I do not not see, yakṣēṣu among yakshas, na not, gandharvēṣu in gandharvas, na not, pakṣiṣu in birds, na not.

I do not see any one equal to me in valour among gods, or yakshas or gandharvas or birds.
rājyabhraṣṭēna dīnēna tāpasēna gatāyuṣā.

kiṅ kariṣyasi rāmēṇa mānuṣēṇālpatējasā৷৷3.55.21৷৷


rājyabhraṣṭēna who lost his kingdom, dīnēna by a dejected person, tāpasēna an ascetic, gatāyuṣā with a short life one, mānuṣēṇa human being, alpatējasā with one who lacks lustre, rāmēṇa Rama, kiṅ kariṣyasi what is the use for you ,

Of what use is Rama who has lost his kingdom, who is depressed and leads an
ascetic life and who is a short-lived, lacklustre human being.
bhajasva sītē māmēva bhartāhaṅ sadṛśastava.

yauvanaṅ hyadhruvaṅ bhīru ramasvēha mayā saha৷৷3.55.22৷৷


sītē O Sita, māmēva me alone, bhajasva accept, aham I am, tava your, sadṛśaḥ befitting, bhartā husband, bhīru timid one, yauvanam youth, adhruvaṅ hi is not permanent, iha here, mayā saha with me, ramasva may enjoy.

O Sita! take refuge only in me. I am a befitting husband to you. O timid one! youth is impermanent. Enjoy (your life) with me while it lasts.
darśanē mākṛthā buddhiṅ rāghavasya varānanē.

kāsya śaktirihāgantumapi sītē manōrathaiḥ৷৷3.55.23৷৷


varānanē O lovely Sita, rāghavasya Rama's, darśanē in seeing, buddhiṅ thought, mā do not, kṛthā: entertain, sītē O Sita, asya his, manōrathairapi with his mind also, iha here, āgantum to come, śaktiḥ power, kā where is it?

O lovely Sita, give up the thought of seeing Rama. Where does he possess the power to reach this place even on the mental plane ?
na śakyō vāyurākāśē pāśairbaddhuṅ mahājavaḥ.

dīpyamānasya vāpyagnērgṛhītuṅ vimalāṅ śikhām৷৷3.55.24৷৷


mahājavaḥ of high speed, vāyuḥ wind, ākāśē in the sky, pāśaiḥ by rope, badhdhum to bind, na śakyaḥ not possible, dīpyamānasya of burning flame, āgnēḥ fire, vimalām brilliant , śikhām flame, gṛhītum to catch.

It is not possible to bind the wind blowing at high speed in the sky. Similarly it is not possible to catch the brilliant glow of flaming fire.
trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṅ na taṅ paśyāmi śōbhanē.

vikramēṇa nayēdyastvāṅ madbāhuparipālitām৷৷3.55.25৷৷


śōbhanē O beautiful lady, trayāṇām in the three, lōkānāmapi worlds too, yaḥ whoever, madbāhuparipālitām protected by my arms, tvām you, vikramēṇa by valour, nayēt can take away, tam him, na paśyāmi not see.

O lovely lady, I do not see any one in these three worlds who can, by his valour, take you away from me guarded by my arms.
laṅkāyāṅ sumahadrājyamidaṅ tvamanupālaya.

tvatprēṣyā madvidhāścaiva dēvāścāpi carācarāḥ৷৷3.55.26৷৷


tvam you, laṅkāyāṅ in Lanka's, sumahat vast, idam this, rājyam kingdom, anupālaya you may rule, madvidhāḥ people like me, dēvāścāpi even gods, carācarāḥ all mobile and immobile beings, tvatprēṣyāḥ will be at beck and call.

Rule this vast kingdom of Lanka. People like me, even gods and all beings, mobile and immobile, will be at your beck and call.
abhiṣēkōdakaklinnā tuṣṭā ca ramayasva mām.

duṣkṛtaṅ yatparā karma vanavāsēna tadgatam৷৷3.55.27৷৷

yaśca tē sukṛtō dharmastasyēha phalamāpnuhi.


abhiṣēkōdakaklinnā drenched with waters of consecration, tuṣṭā ca and satisfied , mām me, ramayasva enjoy, purā previous birth, yat whatever, duṣkṛtam evil deeds, karma tat that, vanavāsēna by dwelling in the forest, gatam gone, tē your, yaḥ whatever, sukṛtaḥ good deeds, dharmaḥ righteousness, tasya of that, phalam fruit, iha here, āpnuhi enjoy.

Drenched with the waters of consecration, entertain me. The effect of the bad deeds done in the past are over with your dwelling in the forest. Now enjoy the fruits of your
good and righteous deeds here with me.
iha mālyāni sarvāṇi divyagandhāni maithili৷৷3.55.28৷৷

bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni sēvasva ca mayā saha৷৷


maithili Maithili, iha here, divyagandhāni of divine fragrance, sarvāṇi all, mālyāni garlands, mukhyāni finest, bhūṣaṇāni ca jewels, mayā saha with me, sēvasva you put on.

O princess from Mithila, put on all garlands of wonderful fragrance and finest of jewels here with me.
puṣpakaṅ nāma suśrōṇi bhrāturvaiśravaṇasya mē৷৷3.55.29৷৷

vimānaṅ sūryasaṅkāśaṅ tarasā nirjitaṅ mayā.


suśrōṇi O charming lady, mē my, bhrātuḥ brother, vaiśravaṇasya Vaisravana's (Kubera's), puṣpakaṅ nāma called Pushpaka, sūryasaṅkāśam radiant like the Sun, vimānam aerial chariot, tarasā with strength, nirjitam is won over.

O fine-hipped lady, I won by my strength from my brother Vaisravana (Kubera) an aerial chariot called Pushpaka shining with the radiance of the Sun.
viśālaṅ ramaṇīyaṅ ca tadvimānamanuttam৷৷3.55.30৷৷

tatra sītē mayā sārdhaṅ viharasva yathāsukham.


sītē O Sita, anuttamam excellent, tat that, vimānam chariot, viśālam huge, ramaṇīyaṅ ca beautiful, tatra on that, mayā sārdham along with me, yathāsukham happily, viharasva can roam with pleasure.

O Sita! that excellent chariot is big and beautiful. Where on you can roam happily along with me.
vadanaṅ padmasaṅkāśamamalaṅ cārudarśanam.

śōkārtaṅtu varārōhē na bhrājati varānanē৷৷3.55.31৷৷


varārōhē O heavy-hipped lady, varānanē lady with a comely face , padmasaṅkāśam looking like lotus, amalam clean, cārudarśanam pleasing to the eye, vadanam face, śōkārtam striken with grief, na bhrājati is not shining.

O heavy-hipped lady! your face which is a clean lotus pleasing to the eye has lost its shine, stricken with grief.
ēvaṅ vadati tasmitsā vastrāntēna varāṅganā.

pidhāyēndunibhaṅ sītā mukhamaśrūṇyavartayat৷৷3.55.32৷৷


tasmin while he, ēvam in that manner, vadati was talking, varāṅganā the best of beauty, sā sītā that Sita, indunibham Moon-like, mukham face, vastrāntēna by the edge of the garment, pidhāya covering, aśrūṇi tears, avartayat stood.

As Ravana went on speaking thus, Sita covered her beautiful, moon-like face with the edge of her garment and stood shedding tears.
dhyāyantīṅ tāmivāsvasthāṅ dīnāṅ cintāhataprabhām.

uvāca vacanaṅ pāpō rāvaṇō rākṣasēśvaraḥ৷৷3.55.33৷৷


pāpaḥ sinful, rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of the demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, dhyāyantīmiva as though in a contemplative mood, asvasthām who was not well, dīnām piteously, cintāhataprabhām her beauty dulled by her anxiety, tām her, vacanam these words, uvāca said.

While Sita was lost in thought, feeling ill at lase, looking wretched with her beauty dulled by her anxiety, the sinful lord of the demons continued :
alaṅ vrīḍēna vaidēhi dharmalōpakṛtēna ca৷৷3.55.34৷৷

ārṣō.yaṅ daivaniṣyandō yastvāmabhigamiṣyati.


vaidēhi Sita, dharmalōpakṛtēna thinking it to be a violation of righteous conduct, vrīḍēna feeling shamed, alam no need to, yaḥ whatever, tvām abhigamiṣyati will come your way, ayam this one, daivaniṣyandaḥ granted by fate, ārṣaḥ acceptable to sages.

O Sita! you need not feel shamed that it is a violation of righteous conduct. Take it as god-send which has the approval of sages.
ētau pādau mayā snigdhau śirōbhiḥ paripīḍitau৷৷3.55.35৷৷

prasādaṅ kuru mē kṣipraṅ vaśyō dāsō.hamasmitē.


ētau these two, snigdhau shining brightly, pādau feet, mayā śirōbhiḥ by my heads too, paripīḍitau are touched and pressed, kṣipram quickly, prasādam favour, kuru do, aham I am, tē to you, vaśyaḥ under your control, dāsaḥ slave, asmi I am.

I am bowing down, pressing my heads at your shining feet. I am at your mercy. Grant me your favourI will remain your slave and remain ever under your control.
imāśśūnya mayā vācaśśuṣyamāṇēna bhāṣitāḥ৷৷3.55.36৷৷

na cāpi rāvaṇaḥ kāñcinmūrdhnā strīṅ praṇamēta ha.


śuṣyamāṇēna with parched throat, mayā by myself, imāḥ these, śūnyāḥ desolate, vācaḥ words, bhāṣitāḥ spoken, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, kāñcit strīṅ any woman, mūrdhnā head bowed down, na praṇamēta hi will not pay obeisance.

My throat has dried up. I have spoken these words in a forlorn state. Ravana has never bowed down to a woman in obeisance.
ēvamuktvā daśagrīvō maithilīṅ janakātmajām৷৷3.55.37৷৷

kṛtāntavaśamāpannō mamēyamiti manyatē.


daśagrīvaḥ the ten-headed Ravana, janakātmajām to the daughter of Janaka, maithilīm Maithili,
ēvam in that manner, uktvā having said, kṛtāntavaśam under the control of Yama, āpannaḥ being distressed, iyam she is, mama mine, iti like this, manyatē thinks.

Having said this to the daughter of Janaka, the ten-headed Ravana who had fallen under the control of Yama, lord of death, misconceived that she had become his own.
itayārṣa śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē pañcapañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyfifth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
