Sloka & Translation

[Rama wails -- doubts Sita's existence-blames Lakshmana -- looks out for Sita around the cottage.]

స దృష్ట్వా లక్ష్మణం దీనం శూన్యే దశరథాత్మజః.

పర్యపృచ్ఛత ధర్మాత్మా వైదేహీమాగతం వినా৷৷3.58.1৷৷


ధర్మాత్మా righteous self, సః దశరథాత్మజః that son of Dasaratha, శూన్యే downcast, వైదేహీం వినా without Vaidehi, ఆగతమ్ who came, దీనమ్ depressed, లక్ష్మణమ్ Lakshmana, దృష్ట్వా seeing, పర్యపృచ్ఛత questioned.

Rama, son of Dasaratha, the righteous self, saw Lakshmana downcast and dejected. Seeing him without Sita, Rama enquired:
ప్రస్థితం దణ్డకారణ్యం యా మామనుజగామ హ.

క్వ సా లక్ష్మణ వైదేహీ యాం హిత్వా త్వమిహాగతః৷৷3.58.2৷৷


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmna, దణ్డకారణ్యమ్ to Dandakaranyam, ప్రస్థితమ్ entered, మామ్ me, యా who, అనుజగామ హ followed, యామ్ whom, హిత్వా having left, త్వమ్ you, ఇహ here, ఆగతః came, సా వైదేహీ that Vaidehi, క్వ where is she?

Where is that princess from Videha who accompanied me when I entered Dandaka forest ? Why have you come here leaving her behind ?
రాజ్యభ్రష్టస్య దీనస్య దణ్డకాన్పరిధావతః.

క్వ సా దుఃఖసహాయా మే వైదేహీ తనుమధ్యమా৷৷3.58.3৷৷


రాజ్యభ్రష్టస్య forsaking the kingdom, దణ్డకాన్ Dandaka, పరిధావతః running about, దీనస్య of a dejected, మే mine, దుఃఖసహాయా a sharer of my sorrow, తనుమధ్యమా lady of slender waist, సా వైదేహీ that Vaidehi, క్వ where is she?

Where is that princess from Videha, a sharer of my sorrows, Sita of slender waist who followed this hapless prince disloged from the kingdom into the Dandaka forest?
యాం వినా నోత్సహే వీర ముహూర్తమపి జీవితుమ్.

క్వ సా ప్రాణసహాయా మే సీతా సురసుతోపమా৷৷3.58.4৷৷


వీర O Warrior, యాం వినా without whom, ముహూర్తమపి even for a moment, జీవితుమ్ to live, నోత్సహే I have no interest, సా she, సురసుతోపమా who resembles the daughter of a god, మే my, ప్రాణసహాయా sustainer of my life, సీతా Sita, క్వ Where is she?

O warrior Lakshmana! where is that Sita without whom I have no interest to live for a moment, who was like the daughter of a god and a sustainer of my life?
పతిత్వమమరాణాం వా పృథివ్యాశ్చాపి లక్ష్మణ.

తాం వినా తపనీయాభాం నేచ్ఛేయం జనకాత్మజామ్৷৷3.58.5৷৷


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, తపనీయాభామ్ golden-hued lady, తామ్ she, జనకాత్మజాం వినా without Janaka's daughter, అమరాణామ్ of gods, పతిత్వమ్ lordship, పృథివ్యాశ్చ of the earth, నేచ్ఛేయమ్ do not desire.

O Lakshmana! I desire no lordship of the gods or of the entire earth without that daughter of Janaka, that lady of golden complexion.
కచ్చిజ్జీవతి వైదేహి ప్రాణైః ప్రియతరా మమ.

కచ్చిత్ప్రవ్రాజనం సౌమ్య న మే మిథ్యా భవిష్యతి৷৷3.58.6৷৷


సౌమ్య O gentle, మమ my, ప్రాణైః than life, ప్రియతరా dearer, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, జీవతి కచ్చిత్ will she be alive, మే my, ప్రవ్రాజనమ్ banishment from kingdom, మిథ్యా prove to be false, న భవిష్యతి కచ్చిత్ shall not become.

O gentle Lakshmana! I wonder if Vaidehi, who is dearer to me than my life is still alive!
I hope my banishment from the kingdom is not going to prove false.
సీతానిమిత్తం సౌమిత్రే మృతే మయి గతే త్వయి.

కచ్చిత్సకామా సుఖితా కైకేయీ సా భవిష్యతి৷৷3.58.7৷৷


సౌమిత్రే Saumitri, సీతానిమిత్తమ్ on account of Sita, మయి when I will be, మృతే dead, త్వయి when you, గతే will be gone, సా కైకేయీ that Kaikeyi, సకామా with her desire fulfilled, సుఖితా a happy soul, భవిష్యతి కచ్చిత్ will be indeed.

O Saumitri! when I am dead on account of Sita, and you are back, Kaikeyi with her desire fulfilled will be happy, indeed.
సపుత్రరాజ్యాం సిద్ధార్థాం మృతపుత్రా తపస్వినీ.

ఉపస్థాస్యతికౌసల్యా కచ్చిత్సౌమ్య న కేకయీమ్৷৷3.58.8৷৷


సౌమ్య O handsome one, మృతపుత్రా with her son dead, తపస్వినీ a lady of renunciation, కౌసల్యా Kausalya, సపుత్రరాజ్యామ్ who enjoys the company of a son and power of the throne, సిద్ధార్థామ్ accomplished her desire, కైకయీమ్ Kaikeyi, న ఉపస్థాస్యతి కచ్చిత్ cease to serve indeed.

O handsome one ! I wonder if that lady of renunciation, Kausalya with her son dead, will have to serve Kaikeyi whose desire would be fulfilled, and who will enjoy the power of the throne in the company of her son!
యది జీవతి వైదేహీ గమిష్యామ్యాశ్రమం పునః.

సువృత్తా యది వృత్తా ప్రాణాంస్త్యక్ష్యామి లక్ష్మణ৷৷3.58.9৷৷


లక్ష్మణ O Lakshmana, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, జీవతి యది if she is living only, పునః again, ఆశ్రమమ్ to the cottage, గమిష్యామి will go, యది వా or else, సువృత్తా virtuous, వృత్తా dead, ప్రాణాన్ life, త్యక్ష్యామి I will give up.

O Lakshmana, only if Vaidehi is alive will I enter the cottage again or else I will give up
my life if that virtuous lady is no more.
యది మామాశ్రమగతం వైదేహీ నాభిభాషతే.

పునః ప్రహసితా సీతా వినశిష్యామి లక్ష్మణ৷৷3.58.10৷৷


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, ఆశ్రమగతమ్ when I return to the cottage, మామ్ me, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, సీతా Sita, ప్రహసితా with her sweet smile, పునః again, నాభిభాషతే యది if she does not speak to me, వినశిష్యామి I will die.

I will die if Sita, princess from Videha, is not there to speak to me with her sweet smile when I return to the cottage, O Lakshmana !
బ్రూహి లక్ష్మణ వైదేహీ యది జీవతి వా న వా.

త్వయి ప్రమత్తే రక్షోభిర్భక్షితా వా తపస్వినీ৷৷3.58.11৷৷


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, జీవతి వా alive or, న వా not, త్వయి you, ప్రమత్తే were not alert, తపస్వినీ lady of renunciation, రక్షోభిః by the demons, భక్షితా వా have they eaten, బ్రూహి tell me.

Tell me, O Lakshmana ! if Sita is alive or not, whether she was eaten up by demons when you were off your guard.
సుకుమారీ చ బాలా చ నిత్యం చాదుఃఖదర్శినీ.

మద్వియోగేన వైదేహీ వ్యక్తం శోచతి దుర్మనాః৷৷3.58.12৷৷


సుకుమారీ చ a delicate, బాలా చ young also, నిత్యమ్ always, అదుఃఖదర్శినీ never experienced sorrow, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, దుర్మనాః troubled mind, మద్వియోగేన by separation from me, శోచతి thinking of, వ్యక్తమ్ it is true.

Vaidehi is delicate, young and she has never faced any sorrow.She will be certainly disheartened due to separation from me.
సర్వదా రక్షసా తేన జిహ్మేన సుదురాత్మనా.

వదతా లక్ష్మణేత్యుచ్చైస్తవాపి జనితం భయమ్৷৷3.58.13৷৷


జిహ్మేన by the wicked, సుదురాత్మనా by the evil-minded, లక్ష్మణ ఇతి saying Lakshmana thus, ఉచ్చైః loudly, వదతా calling out, తేన by him, రక్షసా demon, సర్వథా by all means, తవాపి for you also, భయమ్ fear, జనితమ్ is created.

The evil-minded, wicked demon calling out loudly 'O Lakshmana' must have by all means instilled fear in your mind.
శ్రుతస్తు శఙ్కే వైదేహ్యా స స్వరస్సదృశో మమ.

త్రస్తయా ప్రేషితస్త్వం చ ద్రష్టుం మాం శీఘ్రమాగతః৷৷3.58.14৷৷


వైదేహ్యా by Vaidehi, మమ of me, సదృశః similar, సః that, స్వరః voice, శ్రుతః was heard, శఙ్కే I doubt, త్రస్తయా by a frightened lady, ప్రేషితః sent, త్వం చ you too, మామ్ me, ద్రష్టుమ్ to see, శీఘ్రమ్ quickly, ఆగతః came.

I am afraid, Vaidehi, frightened by hearing the voice which was like mine sent you to see me, and you came all at once.
సర్వథా తు కృతం కష్టం సీతాముత్సృజతా వనే.

ప్రతికర్తుం నృశంసానాం రక్షసాం దత్తమన్తరం৷৷3.58.15৷৷


సీతామ్ Sita, వనే in the forest, ఉత్సృజతా leaving alone, సర్వథా by all means, కష్టమ్ difficult, కృతమ్ done, ప్రతికర్తుమ్ to take revenge, నృశంసానామ్ of the cruel, రక్షసామ్ of demons, అన్తరమ్ chance, దత్తమ్ is given.

You have definitely done a great mistake by leaving Sita alone in the forest. This has given a chance to the cruel demons to wreak revenge.
దుఃఖితాః ఖరఘాతేన రాక్షసాః పిశితాశనాః.

తైస్సీతా నిహతా ఘోరైర్భవిష్యతి న సంశయః.3.58.16৷৷


పిశితాశనాః flesh-eaters, రాక్షసాః demons, ఖరఘాతేన by the death of Khara, దుఃఖితాః are aggrieved, ఘోరైః dreadful, తైః by them, సీతా Sita, నిహతా killed, భవిష్యతి may be, సంశయః doubt, న no.

The dreadful, carnivorous demons aggrieved over my murder of Khara must have undoubtedly killed Sita.
అహోస్మిన్ వ్యసనే మగ్నస్సర్వథా శత్రుసూదన.

కిం న్విదానీం కరిష్యామి శఙ్కే ప్రాప్తవ్యమీదృశమ్৷৷3.58.17৷৷


శత్రుసూదన O destroyer of enemies, సర్వథా in all respects, అస్మిన్ in this, వ్యసనే in sorrow, మగ్నః I am drowned, ఇదానీమ్ at this time, కిం ను కరిష్యామి what can I do?, ఈదృశమ్ such, ప్రాప్తవ్యమ్ destined, శఙ్కే I fear, అహో alas !

O destroyer of enemies ! I am completely drowned in sorrow. What can I do at this moment. Alas, I am destined to suffer.
ఇతి సీతాం వరారోహాం చిన్తయన్నేవ రాఘవః.

ఆజగామ జనస్థానం త్వరయా సహ లక్ష్మణః৷৷3.58.18৷৷


రాఘవః Raghava, ఇతి thus, వరారోహామ్ beautiful, సీతామ్ Sita, చిన్తయన్నేవ while brooding over only, సహ లక్ష్మణః along with Lakshmana, త్వరయా quickly, జనస్థానమ్ Janasthanam, ఆజగామ he went.

While thus brooding over the beautiful Sita, the scion of the Raghus along with Lakshmana hurried towards Janasthana.
విగర్హమాణోనుజమార్తరూపం క్షుధా శ్రమాచ్చైవ పిపాసయా చ.

వినిశ్శ్వసన్ శుష్కముఖో వివర్ణః ప్రతిశ్రయం ప్రాప్య సమీక్ష్య శూన్యమ్৷৷3.58.19৷৷

స్వమాశ్రమం సమ్ప్రవిగాహ్య వీరో విహారదేశాననుసృత్య కాంశ్చిత్.

ఏతత్తదిత్యేవ నివాసభూమౌ ప్రహృష్టరోమా వ్యథితో బభూవ৷৷3.58.20৷৷


వీరః hero, ఆర్తరూపమ్ dejected, అనుజమ్ brother, విగర్హమాణః blaming him, క్షుధా hunger, శ్రమాచ్చైవ due to exhaustion, పిపాసయా and thirsty, వినిఃశ్వసన్ sighing deeply, శుష్కముఖః face dried up, వివర్ణః turned pale, ప్రతిశ్రయమ్ resting-place, ప్రాప్య reaching, శూన్యమ్ empty, సమీక్ష్య seeing, స్వమ్ his, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitage, సమ్ప్రవిగాహ్య searching thoroughly, కాంశ్చిత్ some of the places, విహారదేశాన్ places where she was moving about, అనుసృత్య after following her, నివాసభూమౌ in the dwelling place, ఏతత్ all that, తదేవ ఇతి this itself, ప్రహృష్టరోమా with horripilation, వ్యథితః pained, బభూవ became.

Thus blaming his dejected brother, the valiant Rama entered the hermitage, sighing deeply, his face pale and his throat dried up with hunger, exhaustion and thirst. Reaching his dwelling-place, he found it empty. He thoroughly searched the hermitage and the places where she used to move about on the premises. And 'so it has happened', he sadly said to himself, his hair raised on end.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే అష్టపఞ్చాశస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyeighth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
