[Rama enquires Lakshmana the reason for leaving Sita alone-- Lakshmana tells him about Sita goading him to leave immediately.]

athāśramādupāvṛttamantarā raghunandanaḥ.

paripapraccha saumitriṅ rāmō duḥkhārditaṅ punaḥ৷৷3.59.1৷৷


atha and then, raghunandanaḥ delight of the Raghus, rāmaḥ Rama, duḥkhārditam afflicted, āśramāt from the hermitage, upāvṛttam returned, saumitrim Lakshmana, antarā in the midst, punaḥ again, paripapraccha questioned.

Rama, the delight of the Raghus, once again questioned Lakshmana who had come out of the hermitage, deeply hurt:
tamuvāca kimarthaṅ tvamāgatō.pāsya maithilīm.

yadā sā tava viśvāsādvanē virahitā mayā৷৷3.59.2৷৷


tam him, uvāca had said, tava your, viśvāsāt with the confidence, mayā myself, sā she, vanē in the forest, yadā as such, virahitā left, maithilīm Maithili, kimartham for what reason, upāsya having left her, tvam you, āgataḥ came.

Why did you come, leaving the princess from Mithila alone in the forest when I had left her under your trust ?
dṛṣṭvaivābhyāgataṅ tvāṅ mē maithilīṅ tyajya lakṣmaṇa.

śaṅkamānaṅ mahatpāpaṅ yatsatyaṅ vyathitaṅ manaḥ৷৷3.59.3৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, maithilīm Maithili, tyajya left, abhyāgatam your coming, tvām your, dṛṣṭvaiva on seeing, manaḥ in my mind, mahat great, pāpam evil, śaṅkamānam doubted, vyathitam (iti) yat I was pained, satyam it was true.

When I saw you, O Lakshmana, coming without Sita, my mind was oppressed with evil thought which have come true.
sphuratē nayanaṅ savyaṅ bāhuśca hṛdayaṅ ca mē.

dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇa dūrē tvāṅ sītāvirahitaṅ pathi৷৷3.59.4৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, sītāvirahitam without Sita, tvām you, dūrē at a distance, pathi on the way, dṛṣṭvā seeing, mē mine, savyam left, nayanam eye, bāhuśca shoulder, sphuratē throbbing, mē my, hṛdayaṅ ca heart too.

O Lakshmana, as I saw you from a distance without Sita, my left eye, my shoulder and my heart throbbed.
ēvamuktantu saumitrirlakṣmaṇaśśubhalakṣaṇaḥ.

bhūyō duḥkhasamāviṣṭō duḥkhitaṅ rāmamabravīt৷৷3.59.5৷৷


ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having been spoken, saumitriḥ Lakshmana, śubhalakṣaṇaḥ endowed with good traits, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, bhūyaḥ again, duḥkhasamāviṣṭaḥ drowned in greater sorrow, duḥkhitam sorrowful, rāmam to Rama, abravīt said.

Thus addressed, virtuous Lakshmana, overwhelmed with sorrow replied to the grief stricken Rama:
na svayaṅ kāmakārēṇa tāṅ tyaktvāhamihāgataḥ.

pracōdita stayaivōgraistvatsakāśamihāgataḥ৷৷3.59.6৷৷


aham I, tām her, svayam on my own, tyaktvā after leaving, kāmakārēṇa by my own desire, iha here, na āgataḥ not come, tayaiva by herself, ugraiḥ with angry words, pracōditaḥ provoked, iha here, tvatsakāśam to you, āgataḥ I came.

I did not leave her on my own nor have I come here of my own accord. I came to you,
provoked by her angry words.
āryēṇēva parākruṣṭaṅ hāsītē lakṣmaṇēti ca.

paritrāhīti yadvākyaṅ maithilyāstacchrutiṅ gatam৷৷3.59.7৷৷


hā sītē Alas, Sita, hā lakṣmaṇa Alas, Lakshmana, iti ca these words, paritrāhi iti save me, yat such, āryēṇēva as if your noble self, parākruṣṭam loudly, tat then, maithilyāḥ Maithili's, śrutim to her ears, gatam reached.

Uttered loudly, 'Alas Sita, Alas, Lakshmana, save me', as if these were the words of your noble self, reached Sita's ears.
sā tamārtasvaraṅ śrutvā tava snēhēna maithilī.

gaccha gacchēti māmāha rudantī bhayavihvalā৷৷3.59.8৷৷


sā maithilī that Maithili, tam that, ārtasvaram cry of pain, śrutvā hearing, rudantī crying, tava snēhēna because of her love for you, bhayavihvalā wild with fear, gaccha gaccha iti go, go, mām to me said, āha pleaded.

The princess from Mithila heard this cry of pain and, wild with fear, urged me out of her love for you to go.
pracōdyamānēna mayā gacchēti bahuśastayā.

pratyuktā maithilī vākyamidaṅ tvatpratyayānvitam.3.59.9৷৷


gaccha iti saying go, tayā Sita, bahuśaḥ many ways, pracōdyamānēna while being provoked, mayā by me, maithilī Maithili, tvatpratyayānvitam cofidence in her, idam these, vākyam words, pratyuktā replied.

When I was repeated asked to go, I said this in order to instil confidence in the princess from Mithila :
na tatpaśyāmyahaṅ rakṣō yadasya bhayamāvahēt.

nirvṛtā bhava nāstyētatkēnāpyēvamudāhṛtam৷৷3.59.10৷৷


asya his, yat Rama, bhayam fear, āvahēt who can cause, tat such, rakṣaḥ demon, aham I, na paśyāmi I do not see, nirvṛtā give up fear, bhava your, ētat this, nāsti does not exist, kēnāpi by some one, ēvam in that way, udāhṛtam is uttered.

'No one can cause fear in Rama. I do not see any demon who can hold a threat to him. Give up fear. Some one might have said it.
vigarhitaṅ ca nīcaṅ ca kathamāryō.bhidhāsyati.

trāhīti vacanaṅ sītē yastrāyētridaśānapi৷৷3.59.11৷৷


sītē O Sita, yaḥ he, tridaśānapi even gods, trāyēt he may save, āryaḥ capable one, vigarhitam demeaning, nīcaṅ ca lowly, trāhi iti saying 'save me', vacanam words, katham how, abhidhāsyati will speak out?

'How can Rama who is capable of saving even gods speak such unworthy, demeaning words, 'Save me, O Sita!'
kiṅ nimittaṅ tu kēnāpi bhrāturālambya mē svaram.

rākṣasēnēritaṅ vākyaṅ trāhi trāhīti śōbhanē৷৷3.59.12৷৷


śōbhanē O fair lady!, kiṅ nimittaṅ tu for some reason, kēnāpi rākṣasēna by some demon, mē bhrātuḥ my brother's, svaram voice, ālambya adapting, trāhi trāhi iti 'save me, save me', vākyam these words, īritam is said.

O fair lady, for some reason some demon has uttered these words 'Save me, save me' adapting my brother's voice.
visvaraṅ vyāhṛtaṅ vākyaṅ lakṣmaṇa trāhi māmiti.

na bhavatyā vyathā kāryā kunārījanasēvitā৷৷3.59.13৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, mām me, trāhi save me, iti thus, visvaram in an altered voice, vākyam these words, vyāhṛtam uttered, bhavatyā yourself, kunārījanasēvitā like an ordinary low-born woman, vyathā pain, na kāryā not to be taken.

'Lakshmana, save me' are the words uttered in an altered tone. Like an ordinary, low-born woman you are not to feel concerned for this.
alaṅ vaiklabyamālambya svasthā bhava nirutsukā.

na sō.sti triṣu lōkēṣu pumānvai rāghavaṅ raṇē৷৷3.59.14৷৷

jātō vā jāyamānō vā saṅyugē yaḥ parājayēt.

na jayyō rāghavō yuddhē dēvaiśśakrapurōgamaiḥ৷৷3.59.15৷৷


vaiklabyam bewilderment, ālambya resorting to, alam no need, nirutsukā frustrated, svasthā bhava you should be calm, yaḥ whoever, saṅyugēraṇē in an encounter, rāghavam Rama, parājayēt defeat, saḥ he, pumān a man, triṣu lōkēṣu in the three worlds, jātō vā is born in the past, jāyamānō vā or going to be born, nāsti is not there, rāghavaḥ Rama, śakrapurōgamaiḥ by those led by Indra, dēvaiḥ by gods, yuddhē in war, na jayyaḥ cannot be conquered.

'You should not feel agitated or dispirited. Be composed. There is no one either born or going to be born in the three worlds who can defeat Rama in war. He cannot be conquered in a battle even by gods led by indra.'
ēvamuktā tu vaidēhī parimōhitacētanā.

uvācāśrūṇi muñcantī dāruṇaṅ māmidaṅ vacaḥ৷৷3.59.16৷৷


ēvam in that way, uktā consoled, vaidēhī Vaidehi, parimōhitacētanā of deluded intellect, aśrūṇi tears, muñcantī shedding, mām me, dāruṇaṅ harsh, idaṅ vacaḥ these words, uvāca said.

Deluded by her senses, Vaidehi said these words, shedding tears when I tried to
console her:
bhāvō mayi tavātyarthaṅ pāpa ēva nivēśitaḥ.

vinaṣṭē bhrātari prāptuṅ na ca tvaṅ māmavāpsyasi৷৷3.59.17৷৷


bhrātari brother, vinaṣṭē is deceased, prāptum to get, mayi me, atyartham extremely, pāpaḥ bhāva ēva sinful thought only, tava you, nivēśitaḥ is set, tvam you, mām me, na ca avāpsyasi will not be able to gain.

'You have an extremely sinful intention of getting me when your brother is dead. But you will not be able to gain me.
saṅkētādbharatēna tvaṅ rāmaṅ samanugacchasi.

krōśantaṅ hi yathātyarthaṅ naivamabhyavapadyasē৷৷3.59.18৷৷


atyartham intensely, krōśantam shouting for help, yathā as, ēvam in this, nābhyavapadyasē are not going, tvam you, bharatēna by Bharata, saṅkētāt instruction, rāmam Rama,samanugacchasi followed.

'Since you are not reaching out to Rama who is helplessly crying for his rescue, you must have followed Rama, instructed by Bharata (to do him harm)'৷৷
ripuḥ pracchannacārī tvaṅ madarthamanugacchasi.

rāghavasyāntaraprēpsustathainaṅ nābhipadyasē৷৷3.59.19৷৷


pracchannacārī in disguise, ripuḥ enemy, tvam you, rāghavasya Rama's, antaraprēpsuḥ waiting for an opportunity, madartham for my sake, anugacchasi are following, tathā like this, ēnam him, nābhipadyasē not going now.

'You are an enemy moving in disguise with an interest in me. You are waiting for an opportunity to set aside Rama. That is why you are not rushing to him.'
ēvamuktō hi vaidēhyā saṅrabdhō raktalōcanaḥ.

krōdhātprasphuramāṇōṣṭha āśramādabhinirgataḥ৷৷3.59.20৷৷


vaidēhyā by Vaidehi, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having spoken, saṅrabdhaḥ an agitated person, krōdhāt in anger, raktalōcanaḥ with reddened eye, sphuramāṇōṣṭhaḥ quivering lips, āśramāt from the hermitage, abhinirgataḥ came out.

At these words from the princess of Videha, I came out of the hermitage in an agitated mood with my eyes turned red and lips quivering in anger.
ēvaṅ bruvāṇaṅ saumitriṅ rāmassantāpamōhitaḥ.

abravīdduṣkṛtaṅ saumya tāṅ vinā yattvamāgataḥ৷৷3.59.21৷৷


ēvam in that way, bruvāṇam as he was telling, saumitrim Lakshmana, santāpamōhitaḥ overtaken by grief, rāmaḥ Rama, abravīt said, saumya noble, yat since, tvam you, tāṅ vinā without her, āgataḥ came, duṣkṛtam a wrong act, kṛtam is done.

To Lakshmana thus reporting, Rama, overcome with grief, said,(Even then) O noble brother! your coming here, leaving her behind, is a wrong step taken.
jānannapi samarthaṅ māṅ rakṣasāṅ vinivāraṇē.

anēna krōdhavākyēna maithilyā nissṛtō bhavān৷৷3.59.22৷৷


mām me, rakṣasām of demons, vinivāraṇē in warding off, samartham capable, jānannapi even knowing , bhavān yourself, maithilyāḥ Maithili's, anēna by this, krōdhavākyēna angry words, nissṛtaḥ came out.

You have come out of the hermitage provoked by Maithili's angry words, even though you are aware that I am capable of warding off the demons.
na hi tē parituṣyāmi tyaktvā yadyāsi maithilīm.

kruddhāyāḥ paruṣaṅ śrutvā tāṅ vihāya tvamāgataḥ৷৷3.59.23৷৷


maithilīm Maithili, tyaktvā left, yadyāsi that you came, tē with you, na parituṣyāmi not pleased, tvam you, kruddhāyāḥ angry, paruṣam harsh, śrutvā listening, tām her, vihāya deserting, iha here, āgataḥ came.

I am not happy with you as you have come here deserting Sita on the plea that she was angry and spoke harsh words.
sarvathā tvavinītaṅ tē sītayā yatpracōditaḥ.

krōdhasya vaśamāpannō nākarōśśāsanaṅ mama৷৷3.59.24৷৷


sītayā by Sita, pracōditaḥ you are urged, krōdhasya by anger's, vaśam grip, āpannaḥ came, mama my, śāsanam orders, nākarōḥ (iti) yat not respected, sarvathā by all means, tē your, avinītam act of disobedience.

Provoked by the words of Sita spoken in anger you came without respecting my orders. It is definitely an act of disobedience.
asau hi rākṣasaśśētē śarēṇābhihatō mayā.

mṛgarūpēṇa yēnāhamāśramādapavāhitaḥ৷৷3.59.25৷৷


mṛgarūpēṇa in the guise of a deer, yēna by whom, aham I, āśramāt from the hermitage, apavāhitaḥ was taken away, asau rākṣasaḥ this demon, mayā by me, śarēṇa with an arrow, abhihataḥ he is killed, śētē lies.

This demon who misled me in the guise of a deer and took me away from the hermitage, lies dead, killed by my arrow.
vikṛṣya cāpaṅ paridhāya sāyakaṅ salīlabāṇēna ca tāḍitō mayā.

mārgīṅ tanuṅ tyajya sa viklabasvarō babhūva kēyūradharassarākṣasaḥ৷৷3.59.26৷৷


mayā by me, cāpam bow, vikṛṣya bending, sāyakam an arrow, paridhāya after fixing, salīlabāṇēna
arrow released with ease, tāḍitaḥ beaten , saḥ he, mārgīm a deer, tanum body, tyajya having, saviklabasvara: painful voice, kēyūradharaḥ with a bracelet, rākṣasaḥ demon, babhūva lay down.

Bending the bow I fixed the arrow and released it at ease. Hit by that arrow he gave up his guise of the deer and assuming the form of a demon with a bracelet on his arm fell down groaning.
śarāhatēnaiva tadārtayā girā svaraṅ samālambya sudūrasuśravam.

udāhṛtaṅ tadvacanaṅ sudāruṇaṅ tvamāgatō yēna vihāya maithilīm৷৷3.59.27৷৷


tadā then, śarāhatēnaiva as soon as he was hit by the arrow, ārtayā in distress, girā with a voice, sudūrasuśravam even heard from a distance, svaram voice, samālambya adapting, sudāruṇam very dreadful, tat that, vacanam words, udāhṛtam uttered, yēna by which, tvam you, maithilīm Maithili, vihāya after deserting, iha here, āgataḥ came.

Hit by the arrow, the demon imitating my voice cried out in desperation which could be clearly audible even from a distance. On hearing the dreadful words you deserted Sita and came here.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē ēkōnaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyninth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
