[Sages seek Rama's protection from demons --- Rama's assurance to sages]

ಶರಭಙ್ಗೇ ದಿವಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ ಮುನಿಸಙ್ಘಾಸ್ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ.

ಅಭ್ಯಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಂ ರಾಮಂ ಜ್ವಲಿತತೇಜಸಮ್৷৷3.6.1৷৷


ಶರಭಙ್ಗೇ when Sarabhanga, ದಿವಮ್ heaven, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ attained, ಮುನಿಸಙ್ಘಾ: all groups of sages, ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ came together, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಮ್ to Rama, ಜ್ವಲಿತತೇಜಸಮ್ shining like radiance of fire, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅಭ್ಯಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ approached.

When Sarabhanga attained the heaven, all the sages collected together and came to Rama whose radiance was like fire.
ವೈಖಾನಸಾ ವಾಲಖಿಲ್ಯಾಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲಾ ಮರೀಚಿಪಾಃ.

ಅಶ್ಮಕುಟ್ಟಾಶ್ಚ ಬಹವಃ ಪತ್ರಾಹಾರಾಶ್ಚ ತಾಪಸಾಃ৷৷3.6.2৷৷

ದನ್ತೋಲೂಖಲಿನಶ್ಚೈವ ತಥೈವೋನ್ಮಜ್ಜಕಾಃ ಪರೇ.

ಗಾತ್ರಶಯ್ಯಾ ಅಶಯ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ತಥೈವಾಭ್ರಾವಕಾಶಕಾಃ৷৷3.6.3৷৷

ಮುನಯಸ್ಸಲಿಲಾಹಾರಾವಾಯುಭಕ್ಷಾ ಸ್ತಥಾಪರೇ.

ಆಕಾಶನಿಲಯಾಶ್ಚೈವ ತಥಾ ಸ್ಥಣ್ಡಿಲಶಾಯಿನಃ৷৷3.6.4৷৷

ವ್ರತೋಪವಾಸಿನೋ ದಾನ್ತಾಸ್ತಥಾರ್ದ್ರಪಟವಾಸಸಃ.

ಸಜಪಾಶ್ಚ ತಪೋನಿತ್ಯಾಸ್ತಥಾ ಪಞ್ಚತಪೋನ್ವಿತಾಃ৷৷3.6.5৷৷

ಸರ್ವೇ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮ್ಯಾ ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಜುಷ್ಟಾ ದೃಢಯೋಗಾಸ್ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ.

ವೈಖಾನಸಾಃ Vaikhanasas (those born of the nails of Prajapati), ವಾಲಖಿಲ್ಯಾಃ Valakhilyas (the sixty thousand sages born out of the hair of Brahma, they are the size of the thumb, they surround the chariot of the Sun-god), ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಾಲಾಃ those who keep on washing their body frequently, ಮರೀಚಿಪಾಃ those who drink the rays of Sun and Moon, ಅಶ್ಮಕುಟ್ಟಾಶ್ಚ Asmakuttas, (those who bruise their bodies with stones or those who pound the grain and make their own food), ಪತ್ರಾಹಾರಾಃ those who live on leaves, ಬಹವಃ many, ತಾಪಸಾಶ್ಚ sages, ದನ್ತೋಲೂಖಲಿನಶ್ಚೈವ those who have teeth like mortar, ವಾಯುಭಕ್ಷಾ those who live on air, ತಥೈವ in a similar way, ಉನ್ಮಜ್ಜಕಾಃ those who perform penance standing in neck-deep water, ಪರೇ great men, ಗಾತ್ರಶಯ್ಯಾಃ those who sleep on the skin of the tiger, ಅಶಯ್ಯಾಃ those who do penance without bending any part of the body, ತಥೈವ similarly, ಅಭ್ರವಕಾಶಕಾಃ those who live in the open in Sun and rain, ಸಲಿಲಾಹಾರಾಃ those who live on water only, ಮುನಯಃ sages, ತಥಾ like that, ವಾಯುಭಕ್ಷಾಃ those who live on air, ಅಪರೇ others, ಆಕಾಶನಿಲಯಾಶ್ಚೈವ those who carry on their penance under the open sky, ತಥಾ similarly, ಸ್ಥಣ್ಡಿಲಶಾಯಿನಃ those who sit and sleep on bare ground, ತಥಾ similarly, ವ್ರತೋಪವಾಸಿನಃ those who observe vows and fastings, ದಾನ್ತಾಃ those who are self-restrained, ಆರ್ದ್ರಪಟವಾಸಸಃ those who wear only wet clothes all the time, ಸಜಪಾಶ್ಚ those who repeat the names of gods always, ತಪೋನಿಷ್ಠಾಃ those who are steadfast in penance, ತಥಾ similarly, ಪಞ್ಚತಪೋನ್ವಿತಾಃ those who do penance amidst five blazing fires, ತಾಪಸಾಃ ascetics, ಶರಭಙ್ಗಾಶ್ರಮೇ in the hermitage of Sarabhanga, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅಭಿಜಗ್ಮುಃ approached, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮ್ಯಾ ಶ್ರಿಯಾ shining with radiance born of Brahmavidya, ಜುಷ್ಟಾಃ endowed, ದೃಢಯೋಗಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ those who are steadfast and single-minded in the practice of yoga.

Vaikhanasas, Valakhilyas, sages who continuously wash their bodies, Marichakas Asmakuttas sages who live on leaves only, those who have teeth like mortar, Unmajjakas, those who use limbs as their bed, those who practise penance without using a bed, those who do penance in the open, unmindful of rain or Sun or wind, those who live on water only, those who penance under the open sky, those who carry on penance on high places like the mountain-top, those who recline on bare ground only, those who observe fast as a part of religious tradition, those self-restrained men, those who mutter sacred mantras, those who constantly perform penance and those who stand under the blazing Sun in summer placing fire on four sides while performing penance-all these types of sages met Rama in the hermitage of Sarabhanga.
ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾ ರಾಮಂ ಧರ್ಮಭೃತಾಂ ವರಮ್.

ಊಚುಃ ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮೃಷಿಸಙ್ಘಾಸ್ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ৷৷3.6.7৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಃ knowers of dharma, ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ all of them who reached there, ಋಷಿಸಙ್ಘಾಃ groups of sages, ಧರ್ಮಭೃತಾಮ್ among upholders of righteousness, ವರಮ್ foremost, ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ supreme knower of dharma, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ಊಚುಃ said.

All groups of sages, who knew dharma, and were upholders of righteousness reached Rama, the supreme knower of dharma, and said:
ತ್ವಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾರಥ.

ಪ್ರಧಾನಶ್ಚಾಸಿ ನಾಥಶ್ಚ ದೇವಾನಾಂ ಮಘವಾನಿವ৷৷3.6.8৷৷


ಮಹಾರಥ O great charioteer, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಅಸ್ಯ of this, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲಸ್ಯ of the line of the Ikshvakus, ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ of this earth, ದೇವಾನಾಮ್ of gods, ಮಘವಾನಿವ like Indra, ಪ್ರಧಾನಶ್ಚ chief also, ನಾಥಶ್ಚ lord as well

O great charioteer! you are the lord of the Ikshvaku race and of the world just like Indra, chief among the gods.
ವಿಶ್ರುತಸ್ತ್ರಿಷು ಲೋಕೇಷು ಯಶಸಾ ವಿಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಚ.

ಪಿತೃಭಕ್ತಿಶ್ಚ ಸತ್ಯಂ ಚ ತ್ವಯಿ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ ಪುಷ್ಕಲಃ৷৷3.6.9৷৷


ತ್ರಿಷು among the three, ಲೋಕೇಷು in worlds, ಯಶಸಾ by renown, ವಿಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಚ ವಿಶ್ರುತಃ famous in valour, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ಪಿತೃಭಕ್ತಿಃ ಚ devotion to father, ಸತ್ಯಂ ಚ the truth also, ಪುಷ್ಕಲಃ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ಚ as well as righteousness.

You are renowned in the three worlds for your valour, for your devotion to father, and in you lies enough evidence of your adherence to truth and righteousness.
ತ್ವಾಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಂ ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಮ್.

ಅರ್ಥಿತ್ವಾನ್ನಾಥ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಸ್ತಚ್ಚ ನಃ ಕ್ಷನ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷3.6.10৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ great soul, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ knower of dharma, ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಮ್ one who loves dharma, ತ್ವಾಮ್
you, ಅರ್ಥಿತ್ವಾತ್ being the needy ones, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having come to you, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ we speak, ನಾಥ O lord, ನಃ for us, ತತ್ that, ಕ್ಷನ್ತುಮ್ to excuse, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ should.

O lord, do excuse us. We sought your help to fulfil our needs since you are at hand. You are a great soul, knower and lover of dharma.
ಅಧರ್ಮಸ್ಸುಮಹಾಂಸ್ತಾತ ಭವೇತ್ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹೀಪತೇಃ.

ಯೋ ಹರೇದ್ಬಲಿಷಡ್ಭಾಗಾಂ ನ ಚ ರಕ್ಷತಿ ಪುತ್ರವತ್৷৷3.6.11৷৷


ತಾತ (ನಾಥ) O Lord, ಯಃ whoever, ಬಲಿಷಙ್ಭಾಗಮ್ sixth portion of wealth as tax, ಹರೇತ್ will take, ಪುತ್ರವತ್ like children, ನ ಚ ರಕ್ಷತಿ does not protect, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಮಹೀಪತೇಃ king's, ಸುಮಹಾನ್ very great, ಅಧರ್ಮಃ act of injustice, ಭವೇತ್ will become.

O Lord, a king who collect one sixth of the produce as tax and yet does not protect his subjects like his children commits an act of grave injustice.
ಯುಞ್ಜಾನಸ್ಸ್ವಾನಿವ ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ಪ್ರಾಣೈರಿಷ್ಟಾನ್ಸುತಾನಿವ.

ನಿತ್ಯಯುಕ್ತಸ್ಸದಾ ರಕ್ಷನ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ವಿಷಯವಾಸಿನಃ৷৷3.6.12৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಶಾಶ್ವತೀಂ ರಾಮ ಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಸ ಬಹುವಾರ್ಷಿಕೀಮ್.

ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣಸ್ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತತ್ರ ಚಾಪಿ ಮಹೀಯತೇ৷৷3.6.13৷৷


ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ವಿಷಯವಾಸಿನಃ residents of his country, ಪ್ರಾಣೈಃ more than lives, ಇಷ್ಟಾನ್ dear ones, ಸುತಾನಿವ like his sons, ಸ್ವಾನ್ his own, ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ life, ಯಞ್ಜಾನಃ ಇವ taking care, ನಿತ್ಯಯುಕ್ತಃ always in rightful manner, ಸದಾ always, ರಕ್ಷನ್ while protecting, ಸಃ he, ಶಾಶ್ವತೀಮ್ forever, ಬಹುವಾರ್ಷಿಕೀಮ್ extending over long years, ಕೀರ್ತಿಮ್ fame, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನೋತಿ will acquire, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣಃ Brahman, ಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ place, ಅಸಾದ್ಯ after reaching, ತತ್ರ ಚಾಪಿ there also, ಮಹೀಯತೇ will be excelling.

O Rama, whoever protects the inhabitants of his kingdom at all times like his own son who he loves more than his own life will attain the world of Brahma and remain there for long years and will achieve prosperity thereafter.
ಯತ್ಕರೋತಿ ಪರಂ ಧರ್ಮ ಮುನಿರ್ಮೂಲಫಲಾಶನಃ.

ತತ್ರ ರಾಜ್ಞಶ್ಚತುರ್ಭಾಗ ಪ್ರಜಾ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ರಕ್ಷಿತಃ৷৷3.6.14৷৷


ಮುನಿಃ sage, ಯತ್ whatever, ಪರಮ್ supreme, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ merit, ಕರೋತಿ earns, ತತ್ರ there, ಚತುರ್ಭಾಗಃ fourth portion, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ people, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ righteously, ರಕ್ಷಿತಃ for him who protects.

One fourth of the supreme merit a sage earns by living on fruits and roots, accrues to the king through which the people are protected righteously.
ಸೋಯಂ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠೋ ವಾನಪ್ರಸ್ಥಗಣೋ ಮಹಾನ್.

ತ್ವನ್ನಾಥೋನಾಥವದ್ರಾಮ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈರ್ವಧ್ಯತೇ ಭೃಶಮ್৷৷3.6.15৷৷


ರಾಮ O Rama, ತ್ವನ್ನಾಥಃ with you as their lord, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಭೂಯಿಷ್ಠಃ mostly brahmins, ಮಹಾನ್ great, ಸಃ ಅಯಮ್ that we, ವಾನಪ್ರಸ್ಥಗಣಃ group of sages leading the vanaprastha stage of life, ಅನಾಥವತ್ like orphans, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈಃ by the demons, ಭೃಶಮ್ in large numbers, ವಧ್ಯತೇ being slain.

O Rama ! we are a group of great sages, mostly brahmins, leading a vanaprastha life. Yet with a protector like you, we are slaughtered in large numbers like orphans.
ಏಹಿ ಪಶ್ಯ ಶರೀರಾಣಿ ಮುನೀನಾಂ ಭಾವಿತಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್.

ಹತಾನಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈರ್ಘೋರೈರ್ಬಹೂನಾಂ ಬಹುಧಾ ವನೇ৷৷3.6.16৷৷


ಏಹಿ come on, ವನೇ in the forest, ಘೋರೈ fierce, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈಃ by demons, ಬಹುಧಾ in many, ಹತಾನಾಮ್ killed, ಭಾವಿತಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ those who have perceived the Supreme spirit, ಬಹೂನಾಮ್ of many, ಮುನೀನಾಮ್ of sages, ಶರೀರಾಣಿ the bodies, ಪಶ್ಯ see.

Come and see the bodies of ascetics, who had perceived the Supreme Spirit, killed in large numbers in the forest by the fierce demons.
ಪಮ್ಪಾನದೀನಿವಾಸಾನಾಮನುಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಮಪಿ.

ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಾಲಯಾನಾಂ ಚ ಕ್ರಿಯತೇ ಕದನಂ ಮಹತ್৷৷3.6.17৷৷


ಪಮ್ಪಾನದೀನಿವಾಸಾನಾಮ್ of residents on the banks of river Pampa, ಅನುಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಮಪಿ of those residing near river Mandakini, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಾಲಯಾನಾಂ ಚ of those residing in mount Chitrakuta, ಮಹತ್ great, ಕದನಮ್ war, ಕ್ರಿಯತೇ is being waged.

A great slaughter is taking place amongst those residing on the bank of the Pampa lake, near the river Mandakini, and on mount Chitrakuta.
ಏವಂ ವಯಂ ನ ಮೃಷ್ಯಾಮೋ ವಿಪ್ರಕಾರಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್.

ಕ್ರಿಯಮಾಣಂ ವನೇ ಘೋರಂ ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿರ್ಭೀಮಕರ್ಮಭಿಃ৷৷3.6.18৷৷


ಏವಂ ವಯಮ್ in this state we are, ಭೀಮಕರ್ಮಭಿ: by those doing fearful deeds, ರಕ್ಷೋಭಿಃ by demons, ವನೇ in the forest, ಕ್ರಿಯಮಾಣಮ್ being done, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್ for ascetics, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadful, ವಿಪ್ರಕಾರಮ್ offence, ನ ಮೃಷ್ಯಾಮಃ we are not able to bear.

We ascetics are not able to tolerate the fearful deeds perpetrated by the dreadful demons in the forest.
ತತಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಶರಣಾರ್ಥಂ ಚ ಶರಣ್ಯಂ ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ.

ಪರಿಪಾಲಯ ನೋ ರಾಮ ವಧ್ಯಮಾನಾನ್ನಿಶಾಚರೈಃ৷৷3.6.19৷৷


ತತಃ then, ರಾಮ O Rama, ಶರಣ್ಯಮ್ worthy of refuge, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಶರಣಾರ್ಥಮ್ for protection, ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ we have come here, ನಿಶಾಚರೈಃ by the night-stalkers (the demons), ವಧ್ಯಮಾನಾನ್ being killed, ನಃ us, ಪರಿಪಾಲಯ protect.

O Rama, you are worthy of refuge. Hence we have come to you seeking your protection. We are being killed by the night-stalkers. Save us.
ಪರಾ ತ್ವತ್ತೋ ಗತಿರ್ವೀರ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಂ ನೋಪಪದ್ಯತೇ.

ಪರಿಪಾಲಯ ನ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾನ್ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಭ್ಯೋ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜ৷৷3.6.20৷৷


ವೀರ great warrior, ತ್ವತ್ತಃ other than you, ಪರಾ greatest, ಗತಿಃ refuge, ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಮ್ on this earth,
ನೋಪಪದ್ಯತೇ cannot be found, ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜ O son of a king, ನಃ us, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಭ್ಯಃ from the demons, ಪರಿಪಾಲಯ rescue.

O great warrior! here on this earth there is no protector as mighty as you. So, O prince ! save us all from these demons.
ಏತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತು ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಸ್ತಾಪಸಾನಾಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್.

ಇದಂ ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಃ৷৷3.6.21৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous self, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಃ of Kakutstha dynasty, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್ engaged in penance, ತಾಪಸಾನಾಮ್ of the ascetics, ಏತತ್ this, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾತು on hearing, ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ addressing them all, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಃ ascetics, ಇದಮ್ this, ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ said.

Having heard this, righteous Rama of the Kakutstha dynasty said to all the ascetics engaged in penance:
ನೈವಮರ್ಹಥ ಮಾಂ ವಕ್ತುಮಾಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯೋಹಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್.

ಕೇವಲೇನಾತ್ಮಕಾರ್ಯೇಣ ಪ್ರವೇಷ್ಟವ್ಯಂ ಮಯಾ ವನಂ৷৷3.6.22৷৷


ಏವಮ್ thus, ಮಾಮ್ we, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to address, ನ ಅರ್ಹಥ it is not befitting you, ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್ for ascetics, ಆಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯಃ should be ordered, ಕೇವಲೇನ only to, ಆತ್ಮಕಾರ್ಯೇಣ with a personal mission, ಮಯಾ by me, ವನಮ್ forest, ಪ್ರವೇಷ್ಟವ್ಯಮ್ entered

You should not speak to me this way. I deserve to be commanded by the ascetics. I have not entered this forest only on a personal mission.
ವಿಪ್ರಕಾರಮಪಾಕ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈರ್ಭವತಾಮಿಮಮ್.

ಪಿತುಸ್ತು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಃ ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟೋಹಮಿದಂ ವನಮ್৷৷3.6.23৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈಃ by the demons, ಭವತಾಮ್ to you, ಇಮಮ್ these, ವಿಪ್ರಕಾರಮ್ offence, ಅಪಾಕ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to ward off, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಃ one who carries out instructions, ಇದಮ್ here, ವನಮ್ forest, ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಃ I entered.

I came into this forest in obedience to my father's orders to repel the aggression of demons against you.
ಭವತಾಮರ್ಥಸಿದ್ಧ್ಯರ್ಥಮಾಗತೋಹಂ ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾ.

ತಸ್ಯ ಮೇಯಂ ವನೇ ವಾಸೋ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಮಹಾಫಲಃ৷৷3.6.24৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಭವತಾಮ್ your, ಅರ್ಥಸಿಧ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ to acomplish your task, ಯದೃಚ್ಚಯಾ incidentally, ಆಗತಃ came, ತಸ್ಯ for such a man, ಮೇ for me, ಅಯಮ್ this, ವನೇ ವಾಸಃ stay in the forest, ಮಹಾಫಲಃ great result, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will yield.

I came here to acomplish your task incidentally, Therefore, my stay in the forest will yield great results.

ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್ of ascetics, ಶತ್ರೂನ್ enemies, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನ್ demons, ರಣೇ in war, ಹನ್ತುಮ್ to kill, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ intend to, ತಪೋಧನಾಃ those who are richly endowed with penance, ಋಷಯಃ sages, ಸಭ್ರಾತುಃ along with my brother, ಮೇ my, ವೀರ್ಯಮ್ valour, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತು you will see.

I wish to kill in the fight the demons who are your enemies. O great ascetics, you may witness my prowess supported by my brother.
ದತ್ತ್ವಾಭಯಂ ಚಾಪಿ ತಪೋಧನಾನಾಂ ಧರ್ಮೇ ಧೃತಾತ್ಮಾ ಸಹ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ.

ತಪೋಧನೈಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಸಭಾಜ್ಯವೃತ್ತಃ ಸುತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮೇವಾಭಿಜಗಾಮ ವೀರಃ৷৷3.6.26৷৷


ಧರ್ಮೇ in righteousness, ಧೃತಾತ್ಮಾ steadfast man, ವೀರಃ a brave man, ತಪೋಧನಾನಾಮ್ for ascetics endowed with the wealth of penance, ಅಭಯಮ್ assurance to protect, ದತ್ವಾ after giving, ಸಹ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ with Lakshmana, ತಪೋಧನೈಶ್ಚಾಪಿ and along with the ascetics, ಸಭಾಜ್ಯವೃತ್ತಃ one whose behaviour deserves to be respected, ಸುತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಮೇವ to Sutikshna, ಅಭಿಜಗಾಮ approached.

Brave Rama, steadfast in righteousness, worthy of honour, gave assurance to protect the ascetics endowed with the wealth of penance, and proceeded towards sage Sutikshna.
