[Rama's sorrow -- goes from tree to tree enquiring about Sita -- Rama and Lakshmana go in search of Sita.]

bhṛśamāvrajamānasya tasyādhō vāmalōcanam.

prāsphuraccāskhaladrāmō vēpathuścāpya jāyata৷৷3.60.1৷৷


āvrajamānasya Rama was moving about, tasya his, vāmalōcanam left eye, adhaḥ underneath, bhṛśam excessively, prāsphurat throbbed, rāmaḥ Rama, prāskhalacca stumbled, asya his, vēpathuśca shivering, jāyata was produced.

As Rama was returning( to the hermitage), his left eye throbbed repeatedly and he stumbled and his body trembled.
upālakṣya nimittāni sō.śubhāni muhurmuhuḥ.

api kṣēmaṅ nu sītāyā iti vai vyājahāra ca৷৷3.60.2৷৷


saḥ he, aśubhāni inauspicious, nimittāni omens, upālakṣya having marked, sītāyāḥ of Sita, kṣēmam api nu doubting the welfare, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, vyājahāra ca said also.

As inauspicious omens appeared again and again, doubting if all is well with Sita, he said to himself, Can Sita be safe?
tvaramāṇō jagāmātha sītādarśanalālasaḥ.

śūnyamāvasathaṅ dṛṣṭvā babhūvōdvignamānasaḥ৷৷3.60.3৷৷


atha then, tvaramāṇaḥ hastening , sītā darśanalālasaḥ eager to see, jagāma went, śūnyam empty, āvasatham hermitage, dṛṣṭvā saw, udvignamānasaḥ with an anxious mind, babhūva became.

Anxious to see Sita, he hastened to the hermitage and finding it empty, became
restless.
udbhramanniva vēgēna vikṣipanraghunandanaḥ.

tatra tatrōṭajasthānamabhivīkṣaya samantataḥ৷৷3.60.4৷৷

dadarśa parṇaśālāṅ ca rahitāṅ sītayā tadā.

śriyā virahitāṅ dhvastāṅ hēmantē padminīmiva৷৷3.60.5৷৷


raghunandanaḥ delight of the Raghu race, vēgēna quickly, udbhramanniva turning round and round, vikṣipan throwing his hands, tatra tatra here and there, uṭajasthānam place of hermitage, samantataḥ all round, abhivīkṣya scaninng, tadā then, sītayā by Sita, rahitām devoid of, hēmantē in winter season, dhvastām destroyed, padminīmiva like the lotus pond, śriyā with beauty, virahitām without, parṇaśālām cottage, dadarśa saw.

Rama, the delight of the Raghu dynasty, hurtled in, turning round, throwing his hands to and fro, casting his looks all around the cottage where she used to move. The cottage, devoid of Sita looked like a lotus-pond, the beauty of its lotuses destroyed by winter.
rudantamiva vṛkṣaiśca mlānapuṣpamṛgadvijam.

śriyā vihīnaṅ vidhvastaṅ santyaktavanadēvatam৷৷3.60.6৷৷

viprakīrṇājinakuśaṅ vipraviddhabrusīkaṭam.

dṛṣṭvā śūnyaṅ nijasthānaṅ vilalāpa punaḥ punaḥ৷৷3.60.7৷৷


vṛkṣaiḥ by the trees, rudantamiva as if crying, mlānapuṣpamṛgadvijam flowers withered and animals and birds turned pale, śriyā the beauty, vihīnam devoid of, vidhvastam destroyed, saṅtyaktavanadēvatam sylvan deities left, viprakīrṇājinakuśam with deer-skin and kusa grass scattered, vipraviddhabrusīkaṭam with grass cushions and straw mat thrown pell-mell, śūnyam desolate, nijasthānam own place, dṛṣṭvā seeing, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, vilalāpa wept.

The trees with flowers withered, the animals and birds turned pale looked as if they
were weeping. Bereft of their beauty they wore a ruinous look. The sylvan deities had left. The deer-skin and kusa grass were strewn here and there, the grass cushions and straw mats lay scattered. Seeing his cottage so desolate Rama wept again and again.
hṛtā mṛtā vā naṣṭā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati.

nilīnāpyathavā bhīrurathavā vanamāśritā৷৷3.60.8৷৷


bhiruḥ timid, hṛtā abducted, mṛtā vā or dead, naṣṭā vā or ruined, bhakṣitā vā or eaten up, bhaviṣyati may be, athavā or else, nilīnā hiding, athavā or else, vanam forest, āśritā taken shelter,

'Timid Sita might have been abducted or dead or crushed or eaten up by demons. Or, she may be hiding for protection in the forest'
gatā vicētuṅ puṣpāṇi phalānyapi ca vā punaḥ.

athavā padminīṅ yātā jalārthaṅ vā nadīṅ gatā৷৷3.60.9৷৷


apivā or else, puṣpāṇi flowers, phalāni ca and fruits, vicētum to pluck, gatā gone, athavā or may be, padminīm to a lotus pond, yātā to get, jalārtham to get water, nadīm river, gatā gone.

'Maybe she has gone to pluck flowers or fruits. Or to the lotus-pond or river to fetch water.'
yatnānmṛgayamāṇastu nāsasāda vanē priyām.

śōkaraktēkṣaṇaśśōkādunmatta iva lakṣyatē৷৷3.60.10৷৷


yatnāt by effort, mṛgayamāṇaḥ tu while searching, vanē in the forest, priyām darling, nāsasāda could not see, śōkaraktēkṣaṇaḥ eyes turned red with tears, śōkāt owing to grief, unmatta iva like a mad person, lakṣyatē he appeared.

He ransacked the forest, yet did not find his beloved. He appeared like a mad man, his eyes turned red with tears of sorrow.
vṛkṣādvṛkṣaṅ pradhāvansagirēścādriṅ nadānnadīm.

babhūva vilapanrāmaśśōkārṇavapariplutaḥ৷৷3.60.11৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, vṛkṣāt from tree, vṛkṣam to another tree, girēḥ mountain, adrim to another mountain, nadāt from one river, nadīm to another river, pradhāvan while running, vilapan while weeping, śōkārṇavapariplutaḥ immersed in a sea of sorrow, babhūva remained.

Running from tree to tree, hill to hill, and river to river and weeping, Rama was immersed in a sea of sorrow.
api kācittvayā dṛṣṭā sā kadambapriyā priyā.

kadamba yadi jānīṣē śaṅsa sītāṅ śubhānanām৷৷3.60.12৷৷


kadamba O Kadamba, kadambapriyā O lover of kadamba flowers, priyā my beloved, sā she, kācit some lady, tvayā by you, api dṛṣṭā is seen, jānīṣē yadi if you know, śubhānanām fair face, sītām Sita, śaṅsa tell.

O Kadamba tree, tell me if you have seen my beloved with a fair face and with love for kadamba flowers.
snigdhapallavasaṅkāśā pītakauśēyavāsinī.

śaṅsasva yadi vā dṛṣṭā bilva bilvōpamastanī৷৷3.60.13৷৷


bilva O Bilva, snigdhapallavasaṅkāśā lovely like tender leaf, pītakauśēyavāsinī dressed in yellow silk, bilvōpamastanī lady whose breasts are round (like Bilva fruit), yadi vā dṛṣṭā if you have seen her, śaṅsasva let me know.

O Bilva tree, tell me if you have seen a lady delicate like your tender leaf, dressed in yellow silk, a lady whose breasts are round like Bilva fruits.
athavā.rjuna śaṅsa tvaṅ priyāṅ tāmarjunapriyām.

janakasya sutā bhīruryadi jīvati vā na vā৷৷3.60.14৷৷


athavā or else, arjuna O Arjuna tree, tvam you, arjunapriyām lover of Arjuna tree, tāṅ priyām that beloved of mine, śaṅsa tell me if you know, bhīruḥ a timid lady, janakasya sutā daughter of Janaka, yadi jīvati vā is she living, na vā or not.

O Arjuna tree, tell me if you know a timid lady, daughter of Janaka and my beloved, fond of Arjuna tree. Is the living or not ?
kakubhaḥ kakubhōrūṅ tāṅ vyaktaṅ jānāti maithilīm.

yathā pallavapuṣpāḍhyō bhāti hyēṣa vanaspatiḥ৷৷3.60.15৷৷


vanaspatiḥ the tree, pallavapuṣpāḍhyaḥ rich with tender leaves and flowers, yathā as, bhāti appears, kakubhaḥ kakubha, kakubhōrūm lady with beautiful thighs, tām her, maithilīm Maithili's, vyaktam clearly, jānāti the tree knows.

This Kakubha tree rich with tender leaves and flowers (perhaps)knows Maithili whose thighs are beautiful like the trunk of the Kakubha tree.
bhramarairupagītaśca yathā drumavarō hyayam.

ēṣa vyaktaṅ vijānāti tilakastilakapriyām৷৷3.60.16৷৷


drumavaraḥ best of trees, ayam this, tilakaḥ Tilaka, yathā as, bhramaraiḥ with bees, upagītaḥ is sung, ēṣaḥ he that, tilakapriyām a lover of mark on the forehead, vyaktam it is sure, vijānāti knows?

This great Tilaka tree round which bees bumble surely knows the lady who loves to put tilaka marks on the forehead.
aśōka śōkāpanuda śōkōpahatacētasam.

tvannāmānaṅ kuru kṣipraṅ priyāsandarśanēna mām৷৷3.60.17৷৷


śōkāpanuda O dispeller of sorrow, aśōka O Ashoka tree, priyāsandarśanēna by showing me my darling, śōkōpahatacētasam with a grief-stricken heart , mām to me, kṣipram quickly, tvannāmānam let me be called by your name, kuru do it.

O Ashoka tree, dispeller of sorrow, by quickly showing me my darling make me ashoka (free from sorrow) as I am grief-stricken at heart.
yadi tāla tvayā dṛṣṭā pakvatālaphalastanī.

kathayasva varārōhāṅ kāruṇyaṅ yadi tē mayi৷৷3.60.18৷৷


tāla Palmyra tree, pakvatālaphalastanī one who has breasts like ripened palmyra fruit, tvayā by you, dṛṣṭā yadi if seen, tē you, mayi my, kāruṇyaṅ yadi kind to me, varārōhām Sita, kathayasva tell me.

O Palmyra tree! be kind to me and tell me if you have seen my beautiful beloved who has breasts like ripe palmyra fruit?
yadi dṛṣṭā tvayā sītā jambu jambūphalōpamā.

priyāṅ yadi vijānīṣē niḥśaṅkaṅ kathayasva mē৷৷3.60.19৷৷


jambu O Jambu tree, tvayā by you, sītā Sita, yadi dṛṣṭā if seen, jambūphalōpamā a lady whose body is shining lovely like gold, priyām the beloved one, (vi)jānīṣē yadi know of her, mē to me, niḥśaṅkam without hesitation, kathayasva tell me.

O Jambu tree, do not hesitate to tell me if you know Sita whose body shines lovely like gold.
ahō tvaṅ karṇikārādya supuṣpaiśśōbhasē bhṛśam.

karṇikārapriyā sādhvī śaṅsa dṛṣṭā priyā yadi৷৷3.60.20৷৷


karṇikārāḥ O Karnikara tree, tvam you, adya now, supuṣpaiḥ with flowers in full doom, bhṛśam śōbhasē
shine, ahō Oh, karṇikārapriyā lover of Karnikara, sādhvī chaste woman, priyā beloved, dṛṣṭā yadi seen her, śaṅsa tell.

O Karnikara tree with flowers in full bloom, tell me if you have seen my faithful beloved who is fond of karnikara flowers.
cūtanīpamahāsālānpanasānkuravāndhavān.

dāḍimānanasāngatvā dṛṣṭvā rāmō mahāyaśāḥ৷৷3.60.21৷৷

mallikā mādhavīścaiva campakānkētakīstathā.

pṛcchanrāmō vanē bhāntaḥ unmatta iva lakṣyatē৷৷3.60.22৷৷


mahāyaśāḥ renowned, rāmaḥ Rama, vanē forest, cūtanīpamahāsālān big trees like mango, kadamba and sal, panasān jackfruit tree, dhavān dhaba tree, dāḍimān Pomegranate tree, api also,tān them, mallikāḥ jasmines, mādhavīścaiva Madhavi creepers, campakān champaks, tathā similarly, kētakīḥ Ketaki, dṛṣṭvā seeing, gatvā going near, pṛcchan enquired, bhrāntaḥ wandering in confusion, unmattaḥ iva like a madman, lakṣyatē looked.

Renowned Rama, like a madman confused, approached the Mango, Kadamba , Sal and Jackfruit, Dhava, Champak, Ketaki trees and Pomegranate, Jasmine and Madhavi creepers, in order to make similar queries.
athavā mṛgaśābākṣīṅ mṛga jānāsi maithilīm.

mṛgaviprēkṣaṇī kāntā mṛgībhissahitā bhavēt৷৷3.60.23৷৷


athavā or, mṛga O deer, mṛgaśābākṣīm doe like eyes, maithilīm Maithili, jānāsi known, mṛgaviprēkṣaṇī whose eyes look like eyes of young deer, kāntā beloved, mṛgībhiḥ among the female deer, sahitā with, bhavēt may be.

Or, O deer! do you know about Maithili who has the eyes of a fawn? My beloved who has the restless eyes of a doe may be found in their company.
gaja sā gajanāsōrūryadi dṛṣṭā tvayā bhavēt.

tāṅ manyē viditāṅ tubhyamākhyāhi varavāraṇa.3.60.24৷৷


gaja O elephant, gajanāsōrūḥ whose thighs are like the trunk of an elephant, sā she, tvayā by you, dṛṣṭā is seen, yadi bhavēt if she be, tām her, tubhyam to you, viditām known, manyē I think, varavāraṇa O best of elephants, ākhyāhi tell me.

O elephant! tell me if you have seen her whose thighs are like the trunk of an elephant. O best of elephants, tell me if you know her.
śārdūla yadi sā dṛṣṭā priyā candranibhānanā.

maithilī mama visrabdhaṅ kathayasva na tē bhayam৷৷3.60.25৷৷


śārdūla tiger, candranibhānanā lady with a Moon like face, priyā dear, sā maithilī that Mythili, dṛṣṭā yadi if at all seen by you, visrabdham with confidence, mama to me, kathayasva tell me, tē to you, bhayam fear, na not.

O tiger! tell me freely and fearlessly if you have seen my beloved princess from Mithila with a face like the moon.
kiṅ dhāvasi priyē dūrē dṛṣṭāsi kamalēkṣaṇē.

vṛkṣairācchādya cātmānaṅ kiṅ māṅ na pratibhāṣasē৷৷3.60.26৷৷


kamalēkṣaṇē O lotus-eyed, priyē dear, dūrē to a distance, kim why, dhāvasi you are running, dṛṣṭā seen, asi you, ātmānam yourself, vṛkṣaiḥ with trees, ācchādya covering, mām me, kim why, na pratibhāṣasē not replying.

O lotus- eyed darling, why are you running away? I have already seen you. Why are you hiding behind trees and not replying to me?
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha varārōhē na tē.sti karuṇā mayi.

nātyarthaṅ hāsyaśīlāsi kimarthaṅ māmupēkṣasē৷৷3.60.27৷৷


varārōhē O beautiful lady, tiṣṭha tiṣṭha stay, stay, tē to you, mayi in me, karuṇā compassion, nāsti is not there, atyartham very much, hāsyaśīlā lady fond of making fun, nāsi you are not, mām me, kimartham why, upēkṣasē do you avoid me.

O my beautiful beloved, stay, stay ! Have you no compassion for me ? You are so fond of fun. Why do you avoid me?
pītakauśēyakēnāsi sūcitā varavarṇini.

dhāvantyapi mayā dṛṣṭā tiṣṭha yadyasti sauhṛdam৷৷3.60.28৷৷


varavarṇini O lady of lovely complexion, pītakauśēyakēna by your yellow silk, sūcitā indicated, asi you are, dhāvantyapi even while you are running away, mayā by me, dṛṣṭā you are seen, sauhṛdam love for me, asti yadi if you have, tiṣṭha stay.

O lady of lovely complexion, I can see your yellow silk (flying), while you are running away. If you have love for me, stay on.
naiva sā nūnamathavā hiṅsitā cāruhāsinī.

kṛcchraprāptaṅ na māṅ nūnaṅ yathōpēkṣitumarhati৷৷3.60.29৷৷


athavā even so, sā she, naiva never, cāruhāsinī lady with sweet smile, hiṅsitā hurt, nūnam surely, yathā as such, kṛcchraprāptam when in difficulties, mām me, upēkṣitum to ignore, nārhati should not, nūnam surely.

O lady with a sweet smile! I have never hurt you. When I am in difficulty it does not behove you to ignore me.
vyaktaṅ sā bhakṣitā bālā rākṣasaiḥ piśitāśanaiḥ.

vibhajyāṅkāni sarvāṇi mayā virahitā priyā৷৷3.60.30৷৷


mayā by me, virahitā separated, priyā my beloved, sā bālā that young lady, vyaktam it is clear, sarvāṇi all, aṅgāni limbs, vibhajya tearing, piśitāśanaiḥ by flesh-eaters, rākṣasaiḥ by demons bhakṣitā is eaten away.

It is clear that separated from me, the body of my young beloved is torn off and eaten away by carnivorous demons.
nūnaṅ tacchubhadantōṣṭhaṅ sunāsaṅ cārukuṇḍalam.

pūrṇacandranibhaṅ grastaṅ mukhaṅniṣprabhatāṅ gatam৷৷3.60.31৷৷


nūnam surely, śubhadantōṣṭham having beautiful teeth and lips, sunāsam having beautiful nose, cārukuṇḍalam shining ear-rings, pūrṇacandranibham full Moon like, tat that, mukham face, grastam eclipsed, niṣprabhatām dull, gatam is rendered.

Her beautiful face with her sparkling teeth and lips, well-shaped nose, shining ear-rings has been like the full moon, eclipsed and rendered pale.
sā hi campakavarṇābhā grīvā graivēyaśōbhitā.

kōmalā vilapantyāstu kāntāyā bhakṣitā śubhā৷৷3.60.32৷৷


vilapantyāḥ wept, kāntāyāḥ dear wife, campakavarṇābhā like the colour of champak flowers, graivēyaśōbhitā adorned with necklaces and other golden chains, kōmalā a delicate, śubhā auspicious, sā grīvā of lovely neck, bhakṣitā was eaten.

That delicate, beautiful neck of my beloved having the complexion of a champak flower and adorned with necklaces was perhaps eaten up.
nūnaṅ vikṣipyamāṇau tau bāhū pallavakōmalau.

bhakṣitau vēpamānāgrau sahastābharaṇāṅgadau৷৷3.60.33৷৷


vikṣipyamāṇau thrown, pallavakōmalau tender like leaves, vēpamānāgrau with trembling tips, sahastābharaṇāṅgadau shining with armlets, bracelets, tau bāhū those two arms, nūnam surely,
bhakṣitau eaten away.

Her arms, delicate like tender leaves, their tips (fingers) quivering, adorned with armlets and bracelets have surely been eaten away.
mayā virahitā bālā rakṣasāṅ bhakṣaṇāya vai.

sārdhēnēva parityaktā bhakṣitā bahubāndhavā৷৷3.60.34৷৷


bālā young lady, rakṣasām of the demons, bhakṣaṇāya vai for eating by, mayā by me, virahitā separated, bahubāndhavā having many relations, sārdhēna when half of it is left, parityaktā iva as if abandoned, bhakṣitā eaten.

The young lady having many relations, forsaken by me, has been (perhaps) picked up by a demon for food and later abandoned half-eaten.
hā lakṣmaṇa mahābāhō paśyasi tvaṅ priyāṅ kvacit.

hā priyē kva gatā bhadrē hā sītēti punaḥ punaḥ৷৷3.60.35৷৷


mahābāhō O long-armed one, hāḥ lakṣmaṇa 'Alas Lakshmana !', tvam you, kvacit in any place, priyām dear, paśyasi are you able to see, bhadrē 'O noble lady', hā priyē 'O darling', kva where, gatā you are gone, hā sītē O Sita', iti thus, punaḥ again, punaḥ again.

O long-armed Lakshmana, are you able to see my beloved anywhere? O noble lady, O darling, where have you gone? O Sita ! SIta !
ityēvaṅ vilapanrāmaḥ paridhāvanvanādvanam.

kvacidudbhramatē vēgātkvacidvibhramatē balāt৷৷3.60.36৷৷

kvacinmatta ivābhāti kāntānvēṣaṇatatparaḥ.


rāmaḥ Rama, ityēvam in that manner, vilapan weeping, vanāt from one forest, vanam to the other forest, paridhāvan running, kvacit at some place, vēgāt with speed, udbhramatē jumped,
kvacit at some place, balāt with his strength, vibhramatē moves fast, kvacit at some place, kāntānvēṣaṇatatparaḥ busy in search of his beloved, mattaḥ iva like a madman, ābhāti was seen.

Rama ran from forest to forest, now jumping, now taking strong strides, but all the time weeping, a madman busy in search of his beloved.
sa vanāni nadīśśailān giriprasravaṇāni ca৷৷3.60.37৷৷

kānanāni ca vēgēna bhramatyaparisaṅsthitaḥ.


saḥ he, vanāni the forests, nadī: rivers, śailān hills, giriprasravaṇāni ca streams of mountains, kānanāni ca dense forests, aparisaṅsthitaḥ not stable, vēgēna rushed, bhramati he wandered.

He rushed through forests, rivers, hills and mountain streams and through dense jungles with an unstable mind.
tathā sa gatvā vipulam mahadvanaṅ parītya sarvaṅ tvatha maithilīṅ prati.

aniṣṭhitāśassacakāra mārgaṇē punaḥ priyāyāḥ paramaṅ pariśramam৷৷3.60.38৷৷


saḥ Rama, vipulam vast, mahat great, vanam forest, tathā in that way, gatvā after going, sarvam all, parītya searching, maithilīṅ prati pertaining to Maithili, aniṣṭhitāśaḥ giving up hope of finding her, saḥ Rama, punaḥ again, priyāyāḥ his beloved's, mārgaṇē in search, paramam supreme, pariśramam effort, cakāra made.

Rama went about the vast forest searching for the princess from Mithila all over not giving up hope of finding her. He continued to make great efforts for searching his beloved.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē ṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtieth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
