[Rama's sorrow -- goes from tree to tree enquiring about Sita -- Rama and Lakshmana go in search of Sita.]

భృశమావ్రజమానస్య తస్యాధో వామలోచనమ్.

ప్రాస్ఫురచ్చాస్ఖలద్రామో వేపథుశ్చాప్య జాయత৷৷3.60.1৷৷


ఆవ్రజమానస్య Rama was moving about, తస్య his, వామలోచనమ్ left eye, అధః underneath, భృశమ్ excessively, ప్రాస్ఫురత్ throbbed, రామః Rama, ప్రాస్ఖలచ్చ stumbled, అస్య his, వేపథుశ్చ shivering, జాయత was produced.

As Rama was returning( to the hermitage), his left eye throbbed repeatedly and he stumbled and his body trembled.
ఉపాలక్ష్య నిమిత్తాని సోశుభాని ముహుర్ముహుః.

అపి క్షేమం ను సీతాయా ఇతి వై వ్యాజహార చ৷৷3.60.2৷৷


సః he, అశుభాని inauspicious, నిమిత్తాని omens, ఉపాలక్ష్య having marked, సీతాయాః of Sita, క్షేమమ్ అపి ను doubting the welfare, ముహుర్ముహుః again and again, వ్యాజహార చ said also.

As inauspicious omens appeared again and again, doubting if all is well with Sita, he said to himself, Can Sita be safe?
త్వరమాణో జగామాథ సీతాదర్శనలాలసః.

శూన్యమావసథం దృష్ట్వా బభూవోద్విగ్నమానసః৷৷3.60.3৷৷


అథ then, త్వరమాణః hastening , సీతా దర్శనలాలసః eager to see, జగామ went, శూన్యమ్ empty, ఆవసథమ్ hermitage, దృష్ట్వా saw, ఉద్విగ్నమానసః with an anxious mind, బభూవ became.

Anxious to see Sita, he hastened to the hermitage and finding it empty, became
restless.
ఉద్భ్రమన్నివ వేగేన విక్షిపన్రఘునన్దనః.

తత్ర తత్రోటజస్థానమభివీక్షయ సమన్తతః৷৷3.60.4৷৷

దదర్శ పర్ణశాలాం చ రహితాం సీతయా తదా.

శ్రియా విరహితాం ధ్వస్తాం హేమన్తే పద్మినీమివ৷৷3.60.5৷৷


రఘునన్దనః delight of the Raghu race, వేగేన quickly, ఉద్భ్రమన్నివ turning round and round, విక్షిపన్ throwing his hands, తత్ర తత్ర here and there, ఉటజస్థానమ్ place of hermitage, సమన్తతః all round, అభివీక్ష్య scaninng, తదా then, సీతయా by Sita, రహితామ్ devoid of, హేమన్తే in winter season, ధ్వస్తామ్ destroyed, పద్మినీమివ like the lotus pond, శ్రియా with beauty, విరహితామ్ without, పర్ణశాలామ్ cottage, దదర్శ saw.

Rama, the delight of the Raghu dynasty, hurtled in, turning round, throwing his hands to and fro, casting his looks all around the cottage where she used to move. The cottage, devoid of Sita looked like a lotus-pond, the beauty of its lotuses destroyed by winter.
రుదన్తమివ వృక్షైశ్చ మ్లానపుష్పమృగద్విజమ్.

శ్రియా విహీనం విధ్వస్తం సన్త్యక్తవనదేవతమ్৷৷3.60.6৷৷

విప్రకీర్ణాజినకుశం విప్రవిద్ధబ్రుసీకటమ్.

దృష్ట్వా శూన్యం నిజస్థానం విలలాప పునః పునః৷৷3.60.7৷৷


వృక్షైః by the trees, రుదన్తమివ as if crying, మ్లానపుష్పమృగద్విజమ్ flowers withered and animals and birds turned pale, శ్రియా the beauty, విహీనమ్ devoid of, విధ్వస్తమ్ destroyed, సంత్యక్తవనదేవతమ్ sylvan deities left, విప్రకీర్ణాజినకుశమ్ with deer-skin and kusa grass scattered, విప్రవిద్ధబ్రుసీకటమ్ with grass cushions and straw mat thrown pell-mell, శూన్యమ్ desolate, నిజస్థానమ్ own place, దృష్ట్వా seeing, పునః పునః again and again, విలలాప wept.

The trees with flowers withered, the animals and birds turned pale looked as if they
were weeping. Bereft of their beauty they wore a ruinous look. The sylvan deities had left. The deer-skin and kusa grass were strewn here and there, the grass cushions and straw mats lay scattered. Seeing his cottage so desolate Rama wept again and again.
హృతా మృతా వా నష్టా వా భక్షితా వా భవిష్యతి.

నిలీనాప్యథవా భీరురథవా వనమాశ్రితా৷৷3.60.8৷৷


భిరుః timid, హృతా abducted, మృతా వా or dead, నష్టా వా or ruined, భక్షితా వా or eaten up, భవిష్యతి may be, అథవా or else, నిలీనా hiding, అథవా or else, వనమ్ forest, ఆశ్రితా taken shelter,

'Timid Sita might have been abducted or dead or crushed or eaten up by demons. Or, she may be hiding for protection in the forest'
గతా విచేతుం పుష్పాణి ఫలాన్యపి చ వా పునః.

అథవా పద్మినీం యాతా జలార్థం వా నదీం గతా৷৷3.60.9৷৷


అపివా or else, పుష్పాణి flowers, ఫలాని చ and fruits, విచేతుమ్ to pluck, గతా gone, అథవా or may be, పద్మినీమ్ to a lotus pond, యాతా to get, జలార్థమ్ to get water, నదీమ్ river, గతా gone.

'Maybe she has gone to pluck flowers or fruits. Or to the lotus-pond or river to fetch water.'
యత్నాన్మృగయమాణస్తు నాససాద వనే ప్రియామ్.

శోకరక్తేక్షణశ్శోకాదున్మత్త ఇవ లక్ష్యతే৷৷3.60.10৷৷


యత్నాత్ by effort, మృగయమాణః తు while searching, వనే in the forest, ప్రియామ్ darling, నాససాద could not see, శోకరక్తేక్షణః eyes turned red with tears, శోకాత్ owing to grief, ఉన్మత్త ఇవ like a mad person, లక్ష్యతే he appeared.

He ransacked the forest, yet did not find his beloved. He appeared like a mad man, his eyes turned red with tears of sorrow.
వృక్షాద్వృక్షం ప్రధావన్సగిరేశ్చాద్రిం నదాన్నదీమ్.

బభూవ విలపన్రామశ్శోకార్ణవపరిప్లుతః৷৷3.60.11৷৷


రామః Rama, వృక్షాత్ from tree, వృక్షమ్ to another tree, గిరేః mountain, అద్రిమ్ to another mountain, నదాత్ from one river, నదీమ్ to another river, ప్రధావన్ while running, విలపన్ while weeping, శోకార్ణవపరిప్లుతః immersed in a sea of sorrow, బభూవ remained.

Running from tree to tree, hill to hill, and river to river and weeping, Rama was immersed in a sea of sorrow.
అపి కాచిత్త్వయా దృష్టా సా కదమ్బప్రియా ప్రియా.

కదమ్బ యది జానీషే శంస సీతాం శుభాననామ్৷৷3.60.12৷৷


కదమ్బ O Kadamba, కదమ్బప్రియా O lover of kadamba flowers, ప్రియా my beloved, సా she, కాచిత్ some lady, త్వయా by you, అపి దృష్టా is seen, జానీషే యది if you know, శుభాననామ్ fair face, సీతామ్ Sita, శంస tell.

O Kadamba tree, tell me if you have seen my beloved with a fair face and with love for kadamba flowers.
స్నిగ్ధపల్లవసఙ్కాశా పీతకౌశేయవాసినీ.

శంసస్వ యది వా దృష్టా బిల్వ బిల్వోపమస్తనీ৷৷3.60.13৷৷


బిల్వ O Bilva, స్నిగ్ధపల్లవసఙ్కాశా lovely like tender leaf, పీతకౌశేయవాసినీ dressed in yellow silk, బిల్వోపమస్తనీ lady whose breasts are round (like Bilva fruit), యది వా దృష్టా if you have seen her, శంసస్వ let me know.

O Bilva tree, tell me if you have seen a lady delicate like your tender leaf, dressed in yellow silk, a lady whose breasts are round like Bilva fruits.
అథవార్జున శంస త్వం ప్రియాం తామర్జునప్రియామ్.

జనకస్య సుతా భీరుర్యది జీవతి వా న వా৷৷3.60.14৷৷


అథవా or else, అర్జున O Arjuna tree, త్వమ్ you, అర్జునప్రియామ్ lover of Arjuna tree, తాం ప్రియామ్ that beloved of mine, శంస tell me if you know, భీరుః a timid lady, జనకస్య సుతా daughter of Janaka, యది జీవతి వా is she living, న వా or not.

O Arjuna tree, tell me if you know a timid lady, daughter of Janaka and my beloved, fond of Arjuna tree. Is the living or not ?
కకుభః కకుభోరూం తాం వ్యక్తం జానాతి మైథిలీమ్.

యథా పల్లవపుష్పాఢ్యో భాతి హ్యేష వనస్పతిః৷৷3.60.15৷৷


వనస్పతిః the tree, పల్లవపుష్పాఢ్యః rich with tender leaves and flowers, యథా as, భాతి appears, కకుభః kakubha, కకుభోరూమ్ lady with beautiful thighs, తామ్ her, మైథిలీమ్ Maithili's, వ్యక్తమ్ clearly, జానాతి the tree knows.

This Kakubha tree rich with tender leaves and flowers (perhaps)knows Maithili whose thighs are beautiful like the trunk of the Kakubha tree.
భ్రమరైరుపగీతశ్చ యథా ద్రుమవరో హ్యయమ్.

ఏష వ్యక్తం విజానాతి తిలకస్తిలకప్రియామ్৷৷3.60.16৷৷


ద్రుమవరః best of trees, అయమ్ this, తిలకః Tilaka, యథా as, భ్రమరైః with bees, ఉపగీతః is sung, ఏషః he that, తిలకప్రియామ్ a lover of mark on the forehead, వ్యక్తమ్ it is sure, విజానాతి knows?

This great Tilaka tree round which bees bumble surely knows the lady who loves to put tilaka marks on the forehead.
అశోక శోకాపనుద శోకోపహతచేతసమ్.

త్వన్నామానం కురు క్షిప్రం ప్రియాసన్దర్శనేన మామ్৷৷3.60.17৷৷


శోకాపనుద O dispeller of sorrow, అశోక O Ashoka tree, ప్రియాసన్దర్శనేన by showing me my darling, శోకోపహతచేతసమ్ with a grief-stricken heart , మామ్ to me, క్షిప్రమ్ quickly, త్వన్నామానమ్ let me be called by your name, కురు do it.

O Ashoka tree, dispeller of sorrow, by quickly showing me my darling make me ashoka (free from sorrow) as I am grief-stricken at heart.
యది తాల త్వయా దృష్టా పక్వతాలఫలస్తనీ.

కథయస్వ వరారోహాం కారుణ్యం యది తే మయి৷৷3.60.18৷৷


తాల Palmyra tree, పక్వతాలఫలస్తనీ one who has breasts like ripened palmyra fruit, త్వయా by you, దృష్టా యది if seen, తే you, మయి my, కారుణ్యం యది kind to me, వరారోహామ్ Sita, కథయస్వ tell me.

O Palmyra tree! be kind to me and tell me if you have seen my beautiful beloved who has breasts like ripe palmyra fruit?
యది దృష్టా త్వయా సీతా జమ్బు జమ్బూఫలోపమా.

ప్రియాం యది విజానీషే నిఃశఙ్కం కథయస్వ మే৷৷3.60.19৷৷


జమ్బు O Jambu tree, త్వయా by you, సీతా Sita, యది దృష్టా if seen, జమ్బూఫలోపమా a lady whose body is shining lovely like gold, ప్రియామ్ the beloved one, (వి)జానీషే యది know of her, మే to me, నిఃశఙ్కమ్ without hesitation, కథయస్వ tell me.

O Jambu tree, do not hesitate to tell me if you know Sita whose body shines lovely like gold.
అహో త్వం కర్ణికారాద్య సుపుష్పైశ్శోభసే భృశమ్.

కర్ణికారప్రియా సాధ్వీ శంస దృష్టా ప్రియా యది৷৷3.60.20৷৷


కర్ణికారాః O Karnikara tree, త్వమ్ you, అద్య now, సుపుష్పైః with flowers in full doom, భృశమ్ శోభసే
shine, అహో Oh, కర్ణికారప్రియా lover of Karnikara, సాధ్వీ chaste woman, ప్రియా beloved, దృష్టా యది seen her, శంస tell.

O Karnikara tree with flowers in full bloom, tell me if you have seen my faithful beloved who is fond of karnikara flowers.
చూతనీపమహాసాలాన్పనసాన్కురవాన్ధవాన్.

దాడిమాననసాన్గత్వా దృష్ట్వా రామో మహాయశాః৷৷3.60.21৷৷

మల్లికా మాధవీశ్చైవ చమ్పకాన్కేతకీస్తథా.

పృచ్ఛన్రామో వనే భాన్తః ఉన్మత్త ఇవ లక్ష్యతే৷৷3.60.22৷৷


మహాయశాః renowned, రామః Rama, వనే forest, చూతనీపమహాసాలాన్ big trees like mango, kadamba and sal, పనసాన్ jackfruit tree, ధవాన్ dhaba tree, దాడిమాన్ Pomegranate tree, అపి also,తాన్ them, మల్లికాః jasmines, మాధవీశ్చైవ Madhavi creepers, చమ్పకాన్ champaks, తథా similarly, కేతకీః Ketaki, దృష్ట్వా seeing, గత్వా going near, పృచ్ఛన్ enquired, భ్రాన్తః wandering in confusion, ఉన్మత్తః ఇవ like a madman, లక్ష్యతే looked.

Renowned Rama, like a madman confused, approached the Mango, Kadamba , Sal and Jackfruit, Dhava, Champak, Ketaki trees and Pomegranate, Jasmine and Madhavi creepers, in order to make similar queries.
అథవా మృగశాబాక్షీం మృగ జానాసి మైథిలీమ్.

మృగవిప్రేక్షణీ కాన్తా మృగీభిస్సహితా భవేత్৷৷3.60.23৷৷


అథవా or, మృగ O deer, మృగశాబాక్షీమ్ doe like eyes, మైథిలీమ్ Maithili, జానాసి known, మృగవిప్రేక్షణీ whose eyes look like eyes of young deer, కాన్తా beloved, మృగీభిః among the female deer, సహితా with, భవేత్ may be.

Or, O deer! do you know about Maithili who has the eyes of a fawn? My beloved who has the restless eyes of a doe may be found in their company.
గజ సా గజనాసోరూర్యది దృష్టా త్వయా భవేత్.

తాం మన్యే విదితాం తుభ్యమాఖ్యాహి వరవారణ.3.60.24৷৷


గజ O elephant, గజనాసోరూః whose thighs are like the trunk of an elephant, సా she, త్వయా by you, దృష్టా is seen, యది భవేత్ if she be, తామ్ her, తుభ్యమ్ to you, విదితామ్ known, మన్యే I think, వరవారణ O best of elephants, ఆఖ్యాహి tell me.

O elephant! tell me if you have seen her whose thighs are like the trunk of an elephant. O best of elephants, tell me if you know her.
శార్దూల యది సా దృష్టా ప్రియా చన్ద్రనిభాననా.

మైథిలీ మమ విస్రబ్ధం కథయస్వ న తే భయమ్৷৷3.60.25৷৷


శార్దూల tiger, చన్ద్రనిభాననా lady with a Moon like face, ప్రియా dear, సా మైథిలీ that Mythili, దృష్టా యది if at all seen by you, విస్రబ్ధమ్ with confidence, మమ to me, కథయస్వ tell me, తే to you, భయమ్ fear, న not.

O tiger! tell me freely and fearlessly if you have seen my beloved princess from Mithila with a face like the moon.
కిం ధావసి ప్రియే దూరే దృష్టాసి కమలేక్షణే.

వృక్షైరాచ్ఛాద్య చాత్మానం కిం మాం న ప్రతిభాషసే৷৷3.60.26৷৷


కమలేక్షణే O lotus-eyed, ప్రియే dear, దూరే to a distance, కిమ్ why, ధావసి you are running, దృష్టా seen, అసి you, ఆత్మానమ్ yourself, వృక్షైః with trees, ఆచ్ఛాద్య covering, మామ్ me, కిమ్ why, న ప్రతిభాషసే not replying.

O lotus- eyed darling, why are you running away? I have already seen you. Why are you hiding behind trees and not replying to me?
తిష్ఠ తిష్ఠ వరారోహే న తేస్తి కరుణా మయి.

నాత్యర్థం హాస్యశీలాసి కిమర్థం మాముపేక్షసే৷৷3.60.27৷৷


వరారోహే O beautiful lady, తిష్ఠ తిష్ఠ stay, stay, తే to you, మయి in me, కరుణా compassion, నాస్తి is not there, అత్యర్థమ్ very much, హాస్యశీలా lady fond of making fun, నాసి you are not, మామ్ me, కిమర్థమ్ why, ఉపేక్షసే do you avoid me.

O my beautiful beloved, stay, stay ! Have you no compassion for me ? You are so fond of fun. Why do you avoid me?
పీతకౌశేయకేనాసి సూచితా వరవర్ణిని.

ధావన్త్యపి మయా దృష్టా తిష్ఠ యద్యస్తి సౌహృదమ్৷৷3.60.28৷৷


వరవర్ణిని O lady of lovely complexion, పీతకౌశేయకేన by your yellow silk, సూచితా indicated, అసి you are, ధావన్త్యపి even while you are running away, మయా by me, దృష్టా you are seen, సౌహృదమ్ love for me, అస్తి యది if you have, తిష్ఠ stay.

O lady of lovely complexion, I can see your yellow silk (flying), while you are running away. If you have love for me, stay on.
నైవ సా నూనమథవా హింసితా చారుహాసినీ.

కృచ్ఛ్రప్రాప్తం న మాం నూనం యథోపేక్షితుమర్హతి৷৷3.60.29৷৷


అథవా even so, సా she, నైవ never, చారుహాసినీ lady with sweet smile, హింసితా hurt, నూనమ్ surely, యథా as such, కృచ్ఛ్రప్రాప్తమ్ when in difficulties, మామ్ me, ఉపేక్షితుమ్ to ignore, నార్హతి should not, నూనమ్ surely.

O lady with a sweet smile! I have never hurt you. When I am in difficulty it does not behove you to ignore me.
వ్యక్తం సా భక్షితా బాలా రాక్షసైః పిశితాశనైః.

విభజ్యాఙ్కాని సర్వాణి మయా విరహితా ప్రియా৷৷3.60.30৷৷


మయా by me, విరహితా separated, ప్రియా my beloved, సా బాలా that young lady, వ్యక్తమ్ it is clear, సర్వాణి all, అఙ్గాని limbs, విభజ్య tearing, పిశితాశనైః by flesh-eaters, రాక్షసైః by demons భక్షితా is eaten away.

It is clear that separated from me, the body of my young beloved is torn off and eaten away by carnivorous demons.
నూనం తచ్ఛుభదన్తోష్ఠం సునాసం చారుకుణ్డలమ్.

పూర్ణచన్ద్రనిభం గ్రస్తం ముఖంనిష్ప్రభతాం గతమ్৷৷3.60.31৷৷


నూనమ్ surely, శుభదన్తోష్ఠమ్ having beautiful teeth and lips, సునాసమ్ having beautiful nose, చారుకుణ్డలమ్ shining ear-rings, పూర్ణచన్ద్రనిభమ్ full Moon like, తత్ that, ముఖమ్ face, గ్రస్తమ్ eclipsed, నిష్ప్రభతామ్ dull, గతమ్ is rendered.

Her beautiful face with her sparkling teeth and lips, well-shaped nose, shining ear-rings has been like the full moon, eclipsed and rendered pale.
సా హి చమ్పకవర్ణాభా గ్రీవా గ్రైవేయశోభితా.

కోమలా విలపన్త్యాస్తు కాన్తాయా భక్షితా శుభా৷৷3.60.32৷৷


విలపన్త్యాః wept, కాన్తాయాః dear wife, చమ్పకవర్ణాభా like the colour of champak flowers, గ్రైవేయశోభితా adorned with necklaces and other golden chains, కోమలా a delicate, శుభా auspicious, సా గ్రీవా of lovely neck, భక్షితా was eaten.

That delicate, beautiful neck of my beloved having the complexion of a champak flower and adorned with necklaces was perhaps eaten up.
నూనం విక్షిప్యమాణౌ తౌ బాహూ పల్లవకోమలౌ.

భక్షితౌ వేపమానాగ్రౌ సహస్తాభరణాఙ్గదౌ৷৷3.60.33৷৷


విక్షిప్యమాణౌ thrown, పల్లవకోమలౌ tender like leaves, వేపమానాగ్రౌ with trembling tips, సహస్తాభరణాఙ్గదౌ shining with armlets, bracelets, తౌ బాహూ those two arms, నూనమ్ surely,
భక్షితౌ eaten away.

Her arms, delicate like tender leaves, their tips (fingers) quivering, adorned with armlets and bracelets have surely been eaten away.
మయా విరహితా బాలా రక్షసాం భక్షణాయ వై.

సార్ధేనేవ పరిత్యక్తా భక్షితా బహుబాన్ధవా৷৷3.60.34৷৷


బాలా young lady, రక్షసామ్ of the demons, భక్షణాయ వై for eating by, మయా by me, విరహితా separated, బహుబాన్ధవా having many relations, సార్ధేన when half of it is left, పరిత్యక్తా ఇవ as if abandoned, భక్షితా eaten.

The young lady having many relations, forsaken by me, has been (perhaps) picked up by a demon for food and later abandoned half-eaten.
హా లక్ష్మణ మహాబాహో పశ్యసి త్వం ప్రియాం క్వచిత్.

హా ప్రియే క్వ గతా భద్రే హా సీతేతి పునః పునః৷৷3.60.35৷৷


మహాబాహో O long-armed one, హాః లక్ష్మణ 'Alas Lakshmana !', త్వమ్ you, క్వచిత్ in any place, ప్రియామ్ dear, పశ్యసి are you able to see, భద్రే 'O noble lady', హా ప్రియే 'O darling', క్వ where, గతా you are gone, హా సీతే O Sita', ఇతి thus, పునః again, పునః again.

O long-armed Lakshmana, are you able to see my beloved anywhere? O noble lady, O darling, where have you gone? O Sita ! SIta !
ఇత్యేవం విలపన్రామః పరిధావన్వనాద్వనమ్.

క్వచిదుద్భ్రమతే వేగాత్క్వచిద్విభ్రమతే బలాత్৷৷3.60.36৷৷

క్వచిన్మత్త ఇవాభాతి కాన్తాన్వేషణతత్పరః.


రామః Rama, ఇత్యేవమ్ in that manner, విలపన్ weeping, వనాత్ from one forest, వనమ్ to the other forest, పరిధావన్ running, క్వచిత్ at some place, వేగాత్ with speed, ఉద్భ్రమతే jumped,
క్వచిత్ at some place, బలాత్ with his strength, విభ్రమతే moves fast, క్వచిత్ at some place, కాన్తాన్వేషణతత్పరః busy in search of his beloved, మత్తః ఇవ like a madman, ఆభాతి was seen.

Rama ran from forest to forest, now jumping, now taking strong strides, but all the time weeping, a madman busy in search of his beloved.
స వనాని నదీశ్శైలాన్ గిరిప్రస్రవణాని చ৷৷3.60.37৷৷

కాననాని చ వేగేన భ్రమత్యపరిసంస్థితః.


సః he, వనాని the forests, నదీ: rivers, శైలాన్ hills, గిరిప్రస్రవణాని చ streams of mountains, కాననాని చ dense forests, అపరిసంస్థితః not stable, వేగేన rushed, భ్రమతి he wandered.

He rushed through forests, rivers, hills and mountain streams and through dense jungles with an unstable mind.
తథా స గత్వా విపులమ్ మహద్వనం పరీత్య సర్వం త్వథ మైథిలీం ప్రతి.

అనిష్ఠితాశస్సచకార మార్గణే పునః ప్రియాయాః పరమం పరిశ్రమమ్৷৷3.60.38৷৷


సః Rama, విపులమ్ vast, మహత్ great, వనమ్ forest, తథా in that way, గత్వా after going, సర్వమ్ all, పరీత్య searching, మైథిలీం ప్రతి pertaining to Maithili, అనిష్ఠితాశః giving up hope of finding her, సః Rama, పునః again, ప్రియాయాః his beloved's, మార్గణే in search, పరమమ్ supreme, పరిశ్రమమ్ effort, చకార made.
