[Unable to find Sita, Rama gets restless -- Lakshmana consoles him -- Rama's speculation about Sita.]

దృష్ట్వాశ్రమపదం శూన్యం రామో దశరథాత్మజః.

రహితాం పర్ణశాలాం చ విధ్వస్తాన్యాసనాని చ৷৷3.61.1৷৷

అదృష్ట్వా తత్ర వైదేహీం సన్నిరీక్ష్య చ సర్వశః.

ఉవాచ రామః ప్రాక్రుశ్య ప్రగృహ్య రుచిరౌ భుజౌ৷৷3.61.2৷৷


దశరథాత్మజః son of Dasaratha, రామః Rama, శూన్యమ్ empty, ఆశ్రమపదమ్ hermitage, రహితామ్ devoid of, చ and, విధ్వస్తాని disturbed, ఆసనాని చ seats, దృష్ట్వా saw, తత్ర thereafter, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, అదృష్ట్వా having not seen, సర్వశః all over, సన్నిరీక్ష్య చ scanning, ప్రాక్రుశ్య etched, రుచిరౌ lovely, భుజౌ shoulders, ప్రగృహ్య holding, ఉవాచ said.

Rama, son of Dasaratha, saw the empty cottage devoid of Sita. The mats were displaced. He searched everywhere but unable to see Vaidehi lifted his lovely arms and said:
క్వ ను లక్ష్మణ వైదేహీ కం వా దేశమితో గతా.

కేనాహృతా వా సౌమిత్రే భక్షితా కేన వా ప్రియా৷৷3.61.3৷৷


లక్ష్మణ O Lakshmana, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, క్వ ను where is she, కం వా దేశమ్ in which land, గతా gone, సౌమిత్రే O son of Sumitra, కేన by whom, ఆహృతా వా is abducted, ప్రియా my beloved, కేన వా by whom, భక్షితా eaten.

O son of Sumitra, where is my beloved ? Where did she go? By whom was she abducted? Or, devoured? O Lakshmana !
వృక్షేణాచ్ఛాద్య యది మాం సీతే హసితుమిచ్ఛసి.

అలం తే హసితేనాద్య మాం భజస్వ సుదుఃఖితమ్৷৷3.61.4৷৷


సీతే O Sita, వృక్షేణ by tree, ఆచ్ఛాద్య hiding behind, మామ్ me, హసితుమ్ to make fun, ఇచ్ఛసి యది are you intending to, తే you, హసితేన fun, అలమ్ enough, అద్య now, సుదుఃఖితమ్ very muchgrieved, మామ్ me, భజస్వ come to me.

O Sita! if you intend to make fun by hiding behind a tree, I tell you it is enough. Stop it and come to this extremely sorrowful man.
యైస్సహ క్రీడసే సీతే విశ్వస్తైర్మృగపోతకైః.

ఏతే హీనాస్త్వయా సౌమ్యే ధ్యాయన్త్యస్రావిలేక్షణాః৷৷3.61.5৷৷


సౌమ్యే O gentle lady, సీతే Sita, విశ్వస్తైః relied on you, యైః by those, మృగపోతకైః సహ with the fawn, క్రీడసే play, ఏతే these, త్వయా by you, హీనాః separated, అస్రావిలేక్షణాః eyes filled with tears, ధ్యాయన్తి they are thinking of you.

O gentle Sita! those fawns who trusted you and played with you, are now separated from you. Brooding over you, their eyes are brimming with tears.
సీతయా రహితోహం వై న హి జీవామి లక్ష్మణ.

మృతం శోకేన మహతా సీతాహరణజేన మామ్৷৷3.61.6৷৷

పరలోకే మహారాజో నూనం ద్రక్ష్యతి మే పితా.


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, సీతయా by Sita, రహితః without, అహమ్ I, న హి జీవామి I cannot live, సీతాహరణజేన arising out of Sita's abduction, మహతా by deep, శోకేన by grief, మృతం dead, మామ్ me, మహారాజః the king (Dasaratha), మే పితా my father, నూనమ్ certainly, పరలోకే in the other world, ద్రక్ష్యతి will meet me.

O Lakshmana, I cannot live without Sita. I am filled with deep grief on account of Sita's abduction. My late father, the king will certainly see me in the other world (I will definitely commit suicide).
కథం ప్రతిజ్ఞాం సంశ్రుత్య మయా త్వమభియోజితః৷৷3.61.7৷৷

అపూరయిత్వా తం కాలం మత్సకాశమిహాగతః.

కామవృత్తమనార్యం మాం మృషావాదినమేవ చ৷৷3.61.8৷৷

ధిక్త్వామితి పరే లోకే వ్యక్తం వక్ష్యతి మే పితా.


మామ్ me, మయా by me, అభియోజితః employed by me, త్వమ్ you, ప్రతిజ్ఞామ్ a vow, సంశ్రుత్య having promised, తం కాలమ్ that full term, అపూరయిత్వా without completing, మత్సకాశమ్ into my presence, కథమ్ how, ఇహ here, ఆగతః came, కామవృత్తమ్ an irresponsible person, అనార్యమ్ ignoble, మృషావాదినమేవ చ liar, త్వామ్ you, ధిక్ fie upon, ఇతి thus, పరే లోకే in the other world, మే పితా my father, వ్యక్తమ్ surely, వక్ష్యతి will tell me.

My father say will surely in the other world: Without completing the appointed period of the vow taken, how could you come here ? Fie upon you ! You are irresponsible. You are ignoble. You are a liar.
వివశం శోకసన్తప్తం దీనం భగ్నమనోరథమ్৷৷3.61.9৷৷

మామిహోత్సృజ్య కరుణం కీర్తిర్నరమివానృజుమ్.

క్వ గచ్ఛసి వరారోహే మాం నోత్సృజ సుమధ్యమే৷৷3.61.10৷৷

త్వయా విరహితశ్చాహం మోక్ష్యే జీవితమాత్మనః.


వరారోహే lovely lady, వివశమ్ helpless, శోకసన్తప్తమ్ tormented by sorrow, దీనమ్ piteous, భగ్నమనోరథమ్ disappointed , మామ్ me, కీర్తిః fame, అనృజుమ్ crook, నరమివ like such a man, ఇహ here, కరుణమ్ pitiable, ఉత్సృజ్య leaving, క్వ గచ్ఛసి where have you gone, సుమధ్యమే lady with a slender waist, మా myself, మా ఉత్సృజ leave me not, త్వయా by you, విరహితః separated, అహమ్ I, ఆత్మనః my, జీవితమ్ life, మోక్ష్యే I will give up.

O lovely lady! where have you gone, leaving me here like fame deserting a crook? I am helpless grief-stricken, pitiable, pathetic and disappointed. O lady of slender waist, leave me not. Separated from you, I will give up my life.
ఇతీవ విలపన్రామస్సీతాదర్శనలాలసః৷৷3.61.11৷৷

న దదర్శ సుదుఃఖార్తో రాఘవో జనకాత్మజామ్.


సీతాదర్శనలాలసః eager to see Sita, సుదుఃఖార్తః deeply distressed, రాఘవః Rama, ఇతీవ in that manner, విలపన్ wailed, జనకాత్మజామ్ the daughter of Janaka, న దదర్శ did not see.

Deeply distressed, Rama who was anxious to see Sita, daughter of Janaka, wailed and wailed but could not see her.
అనాసాదయమానం తం సీతాం దశరథాత్మజమ్৷৷3.61.12৷৷

పఙ్కమాసాద్య విపులం సీదన్తమివ కుఞ్జరమ్.

లక్ష్మణో రామమత్యర్థమువాచ హితకామ్యయా৷৷3.61.13৷৷


సీతామ్ Sita, అనాసాదయమానమ్ unable to find, దశరథాత్మజమ్ the son of Dasaratha, విపులమ్ deep, పఙ్కమ్ mud, ఆసాద్య reached, సీదన్తమ్ sinking, కుఞ్జరమ్ ఇవ like an elephant, తం రామమ్ that Rama, లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, అత్యర్థమ్ great, హితకామ్యయా for his welfare, ఉవాచ said.

Lakshmana, dedicated to his well-being, spoke to Rama, son of Dasaratha, who was sinking like an elephant into the quagmire, when he failed to trace Sita.
మా విషాదం మహాబాహో కురు యత్నం మయా సహ.

ఇదం చ హి వనం శూర బహుకన్దరశోభితమ్৷৷3.61.14৷৷


మహాబాహో long-armed, విషాదమ్ sorrow, మా do not resort to, మయా సహ along with me, యత్నమ్ effort, కురు do, శూర O hero, ఇదమ్ this,వనమ్ forest,బహుకన్దరశోభితం హి full of caves.

O long-armed, heroic Rama, do not grieve. This forest is full of caves. Let us try together.
ప్రియకాననసఞ్చారా వనోన్మత్తా చ మైథిలీ.

సా వనం వా ప్రవిష్టా స్యాన్నలినీం వా సుపుష్పితామ్৷৷3.61.15৷৷


ప్రియకాననసఞ్చారా one who is fond of wandering in the forest, వనోన్మత్తాచ mad after forest , సా మైథిలీ that Maithili, వనం వా or in the forest, సుపుష్పితామ్ flowering, నలినీం వా or lotus-pond, ప్రవిష్టా has entered, స్యాత్ perhaps.

Sita is madly in love with the forest. She might have entered deep into the jungle or into a fully blossomed lotus-pond.
సరితం వాపి సమ్ప్రాప్తా మీనవఞ్జులసేవితామ్.

స్నాతుకామా నిలీనా స్యాద్ధాసకామా వనే క్వచిత్৷৷3.61.16৷৷


స్నాతుకామా ta take a dip, మీనవఞ్జులసేవితామ్ full of reeds and fishes, సరితం వాపి or rivers, సమ్ప్రాప్తా has reached, హాసకామా to make fun, క్వచిత్ some where, నిలీనా వా might have hidden, స్యాత్ it may be so.

Maybe she has gone to take a dip in the river full of reeds and fishes ! Or has hidden somewhere for the sake of fun.
విత్రాసయితుకామా వా లీనా స్యాత్కాననే క్వచిత్.

జిజ్ఞాసమానా వైదేహీ త్వాం మాం చ పురుషర్షభ৷৷3.61.17৷৷

తస్యాహ్యన్వేషణే శ్రీమన్ క్షిప్రమేవ యతావహే.


పురుషర్షభ O bull among men, వైదేహీ Vaidehi, త్వాం చ at you, మాం చ at me, విత్రాసయితుకామా వా intending to scare us, జిజ్ఞాసమానా desire to know, కాననే in the forest, క్వచిత్ somewhere, లీనా hidden, స్యాత్ may be, శ్రీమన్ O blessed , తస్యాః her, అన్వేషణే in search, క్షిప్రమేవ immediately, యతావహే both of us will strive.

O best of men, maybe Vaidehi has hidden in the forest intending to scare you and me. She wishes to test our love. O blessed Rama! let us ransack the forest immediately.
వనం సర్వం విచినువో యత్ర సా జనకాత్మజా৷৷3.61.18৷৷

మన్యసే యది కాకుత్స్థ మా స్మ శోకే మనః కృథాః.


కాకుత్స్థ Rama, మన్యసే యది if you think , సా she, జనకాత్మజా Sita, యత్ర wherever, సర్వమ్ all, వనమ్ forest, విచినువ: we both will search, శోకే in grief, మనః mind, మా స్మ కృథాః do not indulge.

O scion of the Kakutsthas, let us search all over the forest if you please. Do not indulge in sorrow.
ఏవముక్తస్తు సౌహార్దాల్లక్ష్మణేన సమాహితః৷৷3.61.19৷৷

సహ సౌమిత్రిణా రామో విచేతుముపచక్రమే.


లక్ష్మణేన by Lakshmana, సౌహార్దాత్ very affectionately, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్తః having been told, రామః Rama, సమాహితః became composed, సౌమిత్రిణా సహ along with Lakshmana the son of Sumitra, విచేతుమ్ to search, ఉపచక్రమే he started.

When Lakshmana consoled him so affectionately Rama became composed. He continued the search with Lakshmana, son of Sumitra.
తౌ వనాని గిరీంశ్చైవ సరితశ్చ సరాంసి చ৷৷3.61.20৷৷

నిఖిలేన విచిన్వానౌ సీతాం దశరథాత్మజౌ.


తౌ దశరథాత్మజౌ those two sons of Dasaratha, వనాని forests, గిరీన్ చైవ and the mountains, సరితశ్చ and the rivers, సరాంసి చ and the ponds, నిఖిలేన entirly, సీతామ్ for Sita, విచిన్వానౌ while they searched.

The two sons of Dasaratha went on searching for Sita in forests, mountains, rivers, ponds everywhere.
తస్య శైలస్య సానూని గుహాశ్చ శిఖరాణి చ৷৷3.61.21৷৷

నిఖిలేన విచిన్వానౌ నైవ తామభిజగ్మతుః.


తస్య శైలస్య that mountain's, సానూని slopes, గుహాశ్చ caves also, శిఖరాణి చ mountain peaks too, నిఖిలేన entirely, విచిన్వానౌ searched, తామ్ her, నైవ అభిజగ్మతుః were not able to find.

They were not able to find Sita even though they searched all over the mountain slopes, caves and peaks.
విచిత్య సర్వతశ్శైలం రామో లక్ష్మణమబ్రవిత్৷৷3.61.22৷৷

నేహ పశ్యామి సౌమిత్రే వైదేహీం పర్వతే శుభామ్.


రామః Rama, సర్వతః everywhere, శైలమ్ mountain, విచిత్య after searching, లక్ష్మణమ్ to Lakshmana, అబ్రవీత్ said, సౌమిత్రే O son of Sumitra, ఇహ here, పర్వతే on mountains, శుభామ్ noble lady, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, న పశ్యామి not seen.

After searching her all over, Rama said Saumitri, I am unable to find the noble Vaidehi on the mountain
తతో దుఃఖాభిసన్తప్తో లక్ష్మణో వాక్యమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.61.23৷৷

విచరన్దణ్డకారణ్యం భ్రాతరం దీప్తతేజసమ్.


తతః then, దుఃఖాభిసన్తప్తః consumed by sorrow, లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, దణ్డకారణ్యమ్ Dandaka forest, విచరన్ while going about, దీప్తతేజసమ్ glowing with brilliance, భ్రాతరమ్ brother, వాక్యమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Going about the Dandaka forest Lakshmana, consumed by sorrow, said to his brother, glowing with brilliance:
ప్రాప్స్యసి త్వం మహాప్రాజ్ఞ మైథిలీం జనకాత్మజామ్৷৷3.61.24৷৷

యథా విష్ణుర్మహాబాహుర్బలిం బద్ధ్వా మహీమిమామ్.


మహాప్రాజ్ఞ O wise sire, త్వమ్ you, జనకాత్మజామ్ daughter of Janaka, మైథిలీమ్ princess from
Mithila, మహాబాహుః one with long arms, విష్ణుః Visnu, బలిమ్ Bali, బద్ధ్వా after binding, ఇమామ్ this, మహీం యథా earned this earth, ప్రాప్స్యసి you will attain.

O long-armed brother! O wise sire ! just as Visnu obtained the earth by binding Bali you will obtain Sita certainly.
ఏవముక్తస్తు సౌహార్దాల్లక్ష్మణేన స రాఘవః৷৷3.61.25৷৷

ఉవాచ దీనయా వాచా దుఃఖాభిహతచేతనః.


లక్ష్మణేన by Lakshmana, సౌహార్దాత్ affectionately, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్తః having been said, సః రాఘవః that Rama, దుఃఖాభిహతచేతనః with grief-striken heart, దీనయా piteously, వాచా by words, ఉవాచ said.

Having been addressed thus by Lakshmana, Raghava with a grief-striken heart said these piteous words :'
Lakshmana,having spoken like that very affectionately to Rama,who was disturbed by excessive grief said these words piteously:
వనం సర్వం సువిచితం పద్మిన్యః ఫుల్లపఙ్కజాః৷৷3.61.26৷৷

గిరిశ్చాయం మహాప్రాజ్ఞ బహుకన్దరనిర్ఝరః.

న హి పశ్యామి వైదేహీం ప్రాణేభ్యోపి గరీయసీమ్৷৷3.61.27৷৷


మహాప్రాజ్ఞ wise sire, సర్వమ్ all over, వనమ్ the forest, సువిచితమ్ searched thoroughly, ఫల్లపఙ్కజాః fully blossomed lotuses, పద్మిన్యః lotus-ponds, బహుకన్దర నిర్ఝరః having many caves and streams, అయమ్ I, గిరిశ్చ mountains also, ప్రాణేభ్యోపి more than my life, గరీయసీమ్ more important, వైదేహీమ్ Vaidehi, న హి పశ్యామి do not see.

O wise Lakshmana! I have searched the entire forest, the ponds with fully blossomed lotuses, the mountains with many caves and streams. But could not see Vaidehi who is dearer to me than my life.
ఏవం స విలపన్రామస్సీతాహరణకర్శితః.

దీనశ్శోకసమావిష్టో ముహూర్తం విహ్వలోభవత్৷৷3.61.28৷৷


సీతాహరణకర్శితః tormented by Sita's abduction, సః రామః Rama, ఏవమ్ thus, విలపన్ cried, దీనః was dejected, శోకసమావిష్టః overpowered by grief, ముహూర్తమ్ for a moment, విహ్వలః consciousess lost, అభవత్ became.

Thus tormented by the abduction of Sita, Rama felt dejected and cried.Overpowered by grief he lost his consciousness for a moment.
సన్తప్తో హ్యవసన్నాఙ్గో గతబుద్ధిర్విచేతనః.

నిషసాదాతురో దీనో నిశ్శ్వస్యాశీతమాయతమ్৷৷3.61.29৷৷


సన్తప్తః tormented, అవసన్నాఙ్గః with limbs enervated, గతబుద్ధి: intellect atrophied, విచేతనః lost senses, ఆతురః anxious, దీనః dejected, అశీతమ్ hot, ఆయతమ్ long, నిశ్శ్వస్య sighing, నిషసాద reclined.

By grief tormented, limbs enervated, intellect atrophied, senses switched off, he felt anxious and depressed and sighed long and hot.
బహులం స తు నిశ్శ్వస్య రామో రాజీవలోచనః.

హా ప్రియేతి విచుక్రోశ బహుశో బాష్పగద్గదః৷৷3.61.30৷৷


రాజీవలోచనః lotus-eyed, సః రామః that Rama, బహులమ్ long, నిశ్శ్వస్య sighing, బాష్పగద్గదః throat choked with sobbing, హా ప్రియేతి saying 'Alas, my darling', బహుశః many times, విచుక్రోశ cried lotus-eyed.

Rama, his throat choked, shed propuse tears, sighing, O my darling!.
తం తతస్సాన్త్వయామాస లక్ష్మణః ప్రియబాన్ధవః.

బహుప్రకారం ధర్మజ్ఞః ప్రశ్రితం ప్రశ్రితాఞ్జలిః৷৷3.61.31৷৷


తతః then, ప్రియబాన్ధవః dear friend, ధర్మజ్ఞః knower of dharma, లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, ప్రశ్రితాఞ్జలిః with folded palms, ప్రశ్రితమ్ humbly, బహుప్రకారమ్ many ways, తమ్ him, సాన్త్వయామాస consoled.

Then Lakshmana, the knower of dharma and a dear friend offered obeisance most humbly with folded palms and consoled Rama in many ways.
అనాదృత్య తు తద్వాక్యం లక్ష్మణోష్ఠపుటాచ్చ్యుతమ్.

అపశ్యంస్తాం ప్రియాం సీతాం ప్రాక్రోశత్స పునః పునః৷৷3.61.32৷৷


సః he, తు on his part, లక్ష్మణోష్ఠపుటాత్ from the lips of Lakshmana, చ్యుతమ్ uttered, తత్ that, వాక్యమ్ words, అనాదృత్య not caring, ప్రియామ్ beloved, తాం సీతామ్ that Sita, అపశ్యన్ not able to see, పునః పునః again and again, ప్రాక్రోశత్ cried loudly.

Without caring for the words from the lips of Lakshmana, Rama sobbed loudly, unable to see his beloved Sita.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే ఏకషష్టితమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfirst sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
