dharmātmā righteous Rama, mahābāhuḥ long-armed, kamalalōcanaḥ lotus-eyed, rāmaḥ Rama, sītām Sita, apaśyan not able to see, śōkōpahatacētanaḥ senses overwhelmed by grief, vilalāpa wept.
The righteous, the long-armed,lotus-eyed Rama, unable to see Sita wept with his senses overwhilmed by grief.
madanārditaḥ under the spell of Cupid, rāghavaḥ Rama, tām her, sītām Sita, apaśyan while not seeing, paśyanniva as if he was seeing, vilāpāśrayadurvacam words which cannot be uttered in grief, vākyam words, uvāca said.
Under the spell of Cupid, Rama uttered such words in grief which are otherwise unutterable. As if he was seeing Sita (before him) which was not a fact.
tvamaśōkasya śākhābhiḥ puṣpapriyatayā priyē.
āvṛṇōṣi śarīraṅ tē mama śōkavivardhinī৷৷3.62.3৷৷
priyē O my beloved, tvam you, puṣpapriyatayā due to your love for flowers, mama my, śōkavivardhinī augmenting sorrow, aśōkasya Ashoka's, śākhābhiḥ by branches, tē your, śarīram body, āvṛṇōṣi you are covering.
O my beloved ! as you love flowers you are hiding your body behind the branches of the Ashoke tree that enhances my sorrow (paradoxically).
dēvi O Devi, kadalīskandhasadṛśau appearing like banana trunk, kadalyā with banana plant, saṅvṛtau are covered, tē ūrū both your thighs, paśyāmi I see, nigūhitum to hide, śaktā possible, nāsi not.
O Devi! I can see both your thighs which resemble banana trunk hidden behind a banana plant. It is not possible for you to hide them from me.
karṇikāravanaṅ bhadrē hasantī dēvi sēvasē.
alaṅ tē parihāsēna mama bādhāvahēna vai৷৷3.62.5৷৷
dēvi O lady, bhadrē O gentle one, hasantī laughing, karṇikāravanam Karnikara garden, sēvasē wandering, mama myself, bādhāvahēna causing pain, tē parihāsēna by your fun, alam enough of it.
O gentle one ! you are wandering in the karnikara garden, laughing and making fun. Enough of this , that causes my pain.
parihāsēna kiṅ sītē pariśrāntasya mē priyē.
ayaṅ sa parihāsō.pi sādhu dēvi na rōcatē৷৷3.62.6৷৷
priyē O beloved, sītē Sita, pariśrāntasya when I am exhausted, mē my, parihāsēna by joking, kim why, ayam this, saḥ that, parihāsō.pi fun also, sādhu well, na rōcatē not liked.
O my dear Sita, why are you joking when I am exhausted? Such fun cannot be relished now.
viśēṣēṇa especially, āśramasthānē in a place like hermitage, ayam this, hāsaḥ jest, na praśasyatē not appreciated, priyē O dear, tē you, parihāsapriyam lover of fun, śīlam nature, avagacchāmi I am aware, viśālākṣi large-eyed lady, tvam you, āgaccha come here, tava yours, ayam this, uṭajaḥ cottage, śūnyaḥ empty.
O darling ! joking specially in a hermitage is not appreciated. I know your nature.You love fun. O large-eyed Sita, come here. This cottage of yours is empty.
lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, sītā Sita, suvyaktam surely, rākṣasaiḥ by demons, bhakṣitā vā devoured or, hṛtāpi vā or abducted, sā that, vilapantam while I cry like this, mām me, na upasampraiti hi not coming to me.
O Lakshmana! surely Sita is either devoured by demons or abducted. When I am weeping like this she is not coming to me.
ētāni mṛgayūthāni sāśrunētrāṇi lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.62.9৷৷
śaṅsantīva hi vaidēhīṅ bhakṣitāṅ rajanīcaraiḥ.
lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, sāśrunētrāṇi eyes filled with tears, ētāni these, mṛgayūthāni herds of deer, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, rajanīcaraiḥ night- walkers, bhakṣitām eaten away, śaṅsanti iva as if they are telling me.
O Lakshmana, these herds of deer with their eyes filled with tears are as if telling me that she is eaten away by the demons.
hā mamāryē kva yātāsi hā sādhvi varavarṇini৷৷3.62.10৷৷
hā sakāmā tvayā dēvī kaikēyī sā bhaviṣyati.
hā Alas, mama my, āryē noble lady, kva where, yātā asi have you gone?, hā sādhvi Ha chaste lady, varavarṇini a woman of excellent complexion, hā Ha, tvayā by you, dēvī the queen, sā that, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, adya now, sakāmā desire fulfilled, bhaviṣyati will become.
Alas, my noble lady, where have you gone? O chaste lady of excellent complexion, that queen Kaikeyi's desire will be fulfilled now.
sītayā saha niryātō vinā sītāmupāgataḥ৷৷3.62.11৷৷
kathaṅ nāma pravēkṣyāmi śūnyamantaḥpuraṅ punaḥ.
sītayā saha along with Sita, niryātaḥ came out, vinā sītām without Sita, upāgataḥ coming back, śūnyam empty, antaḥpuram linner apartment (of queens), punaḥ again, kathaṅ nāma how can I, pravēkṣyāmi enter?
I left home with Sita. How can I re-enter the inner apartment without her ?
lōkaḥ the world, mām me, nirvīryaḥ without valour, iti so also, nirdayaścēti a man who lack compassion, vakṣyati will say, sītāpanayanēna by Sita's abduction, mē my, kātaratvam timid nature, prakāśaṅ hi will manifest.
By Sita's abduction it will be clear to the world that I lack manliness and compassion. My cowardly nature will clearly manifest.
nivṛttavanavāsaśca after completing the period of exile, kuśalam welfare, paripṛcchantam as he enquires, mithilādhipam to lord of Mithila, janakam Janaka, nirīkṣitum to face, katham how do I, śakṣyē will be able.
After completing the period of my exile when Janaka , king of Mithila, enquires of her welfare how can I face him?
vidēharājaḥ king of Videha, tayā virahitam without her, mām me, dṛṣṭvā seeing, sutāsnēhēna out of love for his daughter, santaptaḥ distressed, mōhasya delusion's, vaśam grip, ēṣyati he will be, nūnam surely.
If the king of Videha sees me without her, he will surely be distressed and will fall into a swoon for the love of his daughter.
athavā na gamiṣyāmi purīṅ bharatapālitām৷৷3.62.15৷৷
svargō.pi sītayā hīnaśśūnya ēva matō mama.
athavā or else, bharatapālitām ruled by Bharata, purīm city, na gamiṣyāmi not go, sītayā by Sita,mama for me, hīnaḥ empty, svargō.pi even heaven, śūnya empty, ēva too, mataḥ to me.
Or else, I will not go to the city ruled by Bharata. Without Sita even heaven will be empty for me.
māmihōtsṛjya hi vanē gacchāyōdhyāṅ purīṅ śubhām৷৷3.62.16৷৷
na tvahaṅ tāṅ vinā sītāṅ jīvēyaṅ hi kathañcana.
mām to me, iha here, vanē in the woods, utsṛjya deserting, śubhām auspicious, ayōdhyāṅ purīm to the city of Ayodhya, gaccha you may go, ahaṅ tu I also , tāṅ sītāṅ vinā without Sita, kathañcana indeed, na jīvēyaṅ hi will not live.
Go to the auspicious city of Ayodhya, leaving me here in the woods. I can never live without Sita.
bharataḥ Bharata, gāḍham tightly, āśliṣya embracing, madvacanāt by my words, tvayā by you, vācyaḥ should be told, vasundharām earth, pālayēti may rule, rāmēṇa by Rama's, anujñātaḥ ordered, asi you are.
While embracing Bharata tightly, repeat my words, 'You are permitted by Rama to rule the earth.'
ambā ca mama kaikēyī sumitrā ca tvayā vibhō৷৷3.62.18৷৷
vibhō O Lord, mama my, ambā mother, kaikēyī Kaikeyi, sumitrā ca and Sumitra, kausalyā ca Kausalya also, tvayā by you, mama my, ājñayā by orders, yathānyāyam duly, abhivādyāḥ offer obeisance, (su)uktakāriṇā who does as instructed, bhavatā by you, prayatnēna by effort, rakṣaṇīyā: should be protected.
My mother Kaikeyi, Sumitra and Kausalya should also be offered due obeisance. You should protect them with great effort, carrying out my instructions.
amitrakarśana subduer of enemy, sītāyāśca Sita's, mama ca and of me, ayam this, vināśaḥ loss, tvayā by you, mē my, jananyāḥ mother, vistarēṇa in detail, vinivēdyaḥ make her know, bhavēt you will.
O Lakshmana, subduer of the enemy! this loss of Sita and me should be explained in detail to my mother.
sudīnē very piteous, rāghavē when Rama, vanam woods, upagamya after reaching, sukēśyā by that lady of beautiful hair, tayā vinā without her, iti thus, vilapati was wailing, lakṣmaṇō.pi and Lakshmana too, bhayavikalamukhaḥ face perturbed by fear, vyathitamanāḥ distressed mentally, bhṛśam exceedingly, āturaḥ agitated, babhūva became.
When Rama, devoid of Sita, the lady with beautiful hair, wailed piteously after reaching the forest, Lakshmana too, his face pale out of fear and mind dejected, felt extremely agitated. ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē dviṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷ Thus ends the sixtysecond sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
