[Rama and Lakshmana continue their search for Sita -- find signs of ornaments and footprints of Sita,broken pieces of bow, shield and parasol -- Rama ventilates his anger towards all in the three worlds -- concludes that Sita has been hijacked by a demon.]

sa dīnō dīnayā vācā lakṣmaṇaṅ vākyamabravīt.

śīghraṅ lakṣmaṇa jānīhi gatvā gōdāvarīṅ nadīm৷৷3.64.1৷৷

api gōdāvarīṅ sītā padmānyānayituṅ gatā.


saḥ that Rama, dīnaḥ piteous, dīnayā pitiable, vācā words, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, vākyam these words, abravīt said, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, śīghram swiftly, gōdāvarīṅ nadīm Godavari river, gatvā going, sītā Sita, padmāni lotuses, ānayitum to get, gōdāvarīm Godavari, api gatā has gone, jānīhi find out.

Rama in dejection said these pitiable words to Lakshmana,O Lakashmana, go swiftly to the river Godavari and find out if Sita has gone there to get lotuses.
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā৷৷3.64.2৷৷

nadīṅ gōdāvarīṅ ramyāṅ jagāma laghuvikramaḥ.


rāmēṇa by Rama, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having been told, paravīrahā destroyer of enemy warriors, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, laghuvikramaḥ with quick steps, ramyām delightful, gōdāvarīṅ nadīm river Godavari, jagāma went.

Lakshmana, destroyer of enemy-warriors, went to the beautiful river Godavari with quick steps following the instruction of Rama.
tāṅ lakṣmaṇastīrthavatī vicitvā rāmamabravīt৷৷3.64.3৷৷

naināṅ paśyāmi tīrthēṣu krōśatō na śṛṇōti mē.


lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tīrthavatīm having landings, tām her, vicitvā searching, rāmam to Rama, abravīt said, ēnām her, tīrthēṣu at the landings, na paśyāmi do not see, mē when I, krōśataḥ called out, na śṛṇōti no one hears.

Searching for Sita at the landings of river Godavari, Lakshmana said to Rama, I am unable to find her at these landings.No one responds to my call.
kaṅ nu vā dēśamāpannā vaidēhī klēśanāśinī৷৷3.64.4৷৷

na hyahaṅ vēda taṅ dēśaṅ yatra sā janakātmajā.


klēśanāśinī destroyer of sorrow, vaidēhī Vaidehi, kaṅ vā where else, dēśam place, āpannā nu had landed, sā that, janakātmajā daughter of Janaka, yatra where, taṅ dēśam that place, aham I, na vēda hi do not know.

Where could Vaidehi, destroyer of sorrow, go? I wonder. I am unable to trace the spot where the daughter of Janaka could be found.
lakṣmaṇasya vacaśśrutvā dīnassantāpamōhitaḥ৷৷3.64.5৷৷

rāmassamabhicakrāma svayaṅ gōdāvarīṅ nadīm.

sa tāmupasthitō rāmaḥ kva sītētyēvamabravīt৷৷3.64.6৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, lakṣmaṇasya Lakshmana's, vacaḥ words, śrutvā on hearing, dīnaḥ a dejected man, santāpamōhitaḥ overwhelmed with grief, svayam himself, gādāvarīṅ nadīm to river Godavari, samabhicakrāma went, saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, tām the river, upasthitaḥ approached, sītē Sita, kva where, ityēvam in this manner, abravīt said.

Overwhelmed with grief on hearing Lakshmana's words, Rama himself went to river Godavari, and shouted, where are you, Sita?
bhūtāni rākṣasēndrēṇa vadhārhēṇa hṛtāmiti.

na tāṅ śaśaṅsū rāmāya tathā gōdāvarī nadi৷৷3.64.7৷৷


vadhārhēṇa by one who deserved to be killed, rākṣasēndrēṇa by the lord of the demons, hṛtām kidnapped, tām her, iti like that, bhūtāni beings, tathā similarly, gōdāvarī nadī river Godavari, rāmāya to Rama, na śaśaṅsuḥ did not reply.

Like the elements of Nature, river Godavari did not disclose Rama that Sita had been abducted by the king of demons who deserved death.
tataḥ pracōditā bhūtaiśśaṅsāsmaitāṅ priyāmiti.

na tu sābhyavadatasitāṅ pṛṣṭā rāmēṇa śōcatā৷৷3.64.8৷৷


tataḥ thereafter, śōcatā brooding, rāmēṇa by Rama, pṛṣṭā asked, sā that, priyām about his beloved, asmai to him, śaṅsa you may tell, iti this, bhūtaiḥ beings, pracōditā prompted, sītām Sita, nābhyavadat no one has said.

River Godavari (although) prompted by creatures (of Nature) to tell him about his beloved did not respond to brooding Rama.
rāvaṇasya tu tadrūpaṅ karmāṇi ca durātmanaḥ.

dhyātvā bhayāttu vaidēhīṅ sā nadī na śaśaṅsa tām৷৷3.64.9৷৷


sā nadī that river, durātmanaḥ of the evil-minded, rāvaṇasya Ravana's, tat that, rūpam figure, karmāṇi ca actions too, dhyātvā thinking over, bhayāt out of fear, tāṅ vaidēhīm about Vaidehi, na śaśaṅsa did not speak.

Remembering the evil-minded Ravana's appearance and action, the river revealed nothing about Vaidehi out of fear.
nirāśastu tayā nadyā sītāyā darśanē kṛtaḥ.

uvāca rāmassaumitriṅ sītādarśanakarśitaḥ৷৷3.64.10৷৷


sītādarśanakarśitaḥ emaciated on account of not finding Sita, rāmaḥ Rama, tayā nadyā by that river not replying, sītāyāḥ of Sita, darśanē see, nirāśaḥ disappointed, kṛtaḥ was made, saumitrim to Lakshmana, uvāca said.

Disappointed by the river and emaciated by not being able to see Sita, Rama said to Lakshmana :
ēṣā gōdāvarī saumya kiṅcinna prati bhāṣatē.

kiṅ nu lakṣmaṇa vakṣyāmi samētya janakaṅ vacaḥ৷৷3.64.11৷৷

mātaraṅ caiva vaidēhyā vinā tāmahamapriyam.


saumya O handsome, ēṣā gōdāvarī this Godavari, kiñcit even a little, na pratibhāṣatē is not answering, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, jānakīṅ Janaki, vinā without, aham I am, janakam Janaka, samētya after meeting him, mātaraṅ caiva to mother also, apriyam unhappy, kiṅ nu what can, vacanam words, vakṣyāmi tell.

O handsome Lakshmana! this Godavari does not at all respond. How can I go to Janaka and my mother without Sita and break this unhappy news?
yā mē rājyavihīnasya vanē vanyēna jīvataḥ৷৷3.64.12৷৷

sarvaṅ vyapanayēcchōkaṅ vaidēhī kva nu sā gatā.


rājyavihīnasya who lost his kingdom, vanē in the forest, vanyēna food available in the forest, jīvataḥ lived, mē me, sarvam all, śōkam grief, yā vaidēhī that Vaidehi, vyapanayēt remove sorrow, sā she, kva where, gatā nu has she gone?

Where could have gone that Vaidehi, who removed all my sorrows and sufferings when I lost my kingdom and survived on food available in the forest?
jñātipakṣavihīnasya rājaputrīmapaśyataḥ৷৷3.64.13৷৷

manyē dīrghā bhaviṣyanti rātrayō mama jāgrataḥ.


jñātipakṣavihīnasya away from relatives, rājaputrīm princess, apaśyataḥ not seeing, jāgrataḥ keeping awake, mama for me, rātrayaḥ nights, dīrghāḥ long, bhaviṣyanti appear, manyē I think.

Away from relatives and away from the princess, I keep awake during nights which seem too long.
gōdāvarīṅ janasthānamimaṅ prasravaṇaṅ girim৷৷3.64.14৷৷

sarvāṇyanugamiṣyāmi yadi sītā hi dṛśyatē.


gōdāvarīm Godavari, janasthānam Janasthanam, imam this, prasravaṇaṅ Prasravana, girim mountain, sarvāṇi all, anugamiṣyāmi will follow up, sītā Sita, yadi hi dṛśyatē if Sita can be found.

I will roam about the river Godavari, Janasthana and this mount Prasravana till I find Sita.
ētē mṛgā mahāvīrya māmīkṣantē muhurmuhuḥ৷৷3.64.15৷৷

vaktukāmā iva hi mē iṅgitānyupalakṣayē.


mahāvīrya O mighty one, ētē these, mṛgāḥ deer, muhurmuhuḥ again and again, mām me,īkṣantē looking, iṅgitāni their signs, upalakṣayē indicating, mē to me, vaktukāmā iva as if they wish to tell me.

O mighty Lakshmana! these deer are looking at me again and again indicating that they wish to tell me something.
tāṅstu dṛṣṭvā naravyāghrō rāghavaḥ pratyuvāca ha৷৷3.64.16৷৷

kva sītēti nirīkṣanvai bāṣpasaṅruddhayā dṛśā.


naravyāghraḥ tiger among men, rāghavaḥ Rama, tān them, dṛṣṭvā seeing, bāṣpasaṅruddhayā blurred by tears, dṛśā with their sight, nirīkṣan beholding, sītā Sita, kva where, iti like this, pratyuvāca ha replied.

With his vision blurred by tears, Rama, the best among men, looked at them and asked them 'Where is Sita'?
ēvamuktā narēndrēṇa tē mṛgāssahasōtthitāḥ৷৷3.64.17৷৷

dakṣiṇābhimukhāssarvē darśayantō nabhasthalam.

maithilī hriyamāṇā sā diśaṅ yāmanvapadyata৷৷3.64.18৷৷

tēna mārgēṇa dhāvantō nirīkṣantē narādhipam.


narēndrēṇa by the prince, ēvam in that way, uktāḥ said, mṛgāḥ deer, sahasā suddenly, utthitāḥ got, sarvē all, dakṣiṇābhimukhāḥ facing south, nabhasthalam to the region of the sky, darśayantaḥ pointing, hriyamāṇā taken away, maithilī Maithili, yām such, diśam direction, anvapadyata followed, tēna mārgēṇa by that path, dhāvantaḥ while running, narādhipam to the lord of men, nirīkṣantē were looking at.

Thus asked by the prince, all the deer got up suddenly, and pointed towards the southern sky, the direction in which the princess from Mithila was carried off. Looking at the Lord of men (Rama), they started running in that direction.
yēna mārgaṅ ca bhūmiṅ ca nirīkṣantē sma tē mṛgāḥ৷৷3.64.19৷৷

punaśca mārgamicchanti lakṣmaṇēnōpalakṣitāḥ.


tē mṛgāḥ those deer, yēna by which, mārgaṅ ca direction, bhūmiṅ ca and the land, nirīkṣantē sma looking at, punaśca again, mārgaṅ that path, icchanti intend to go, lakṣmaṇēna even Lakshmana, upalakṣitāḥ niticed.

Even Lakshmana marked that the deer were showing and looking at the path lying in that direction.
tēṣāṅ vacanasarvasvaṅ lakṣayāmāsa cēṅgitam৷৷3.64.20৷৷

uvāca lakṣmaṇō jyēṣṭhaṅ dhīmānbhrātaramārtavat.


dhīmān wise, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, tēṣām their, vacanasarvasvam meaning of their words fully, iṅgitam indication, lakṣayāmāsa he observed, ārtavat distressed, jyēṣṭhaṅ bhrātaram elder brother, uvāca said.

Observing intelligently their indications and understanding the meaning of their message, Lakshmana said to his distressed elder brother:
kva sitēti tvayā pṛṣṭā yathēmē sahasōtthitāḥ৷৷3.64.21৷৷

darśayanti kṣitiṅ caiva dakṣiṇāṅ ca diśaṅ mṛgāḥ.

sādhu gacchāvahē dēva diśamētāṅ hi naiṛtim৷৷3.64.22৷৷

yadi syādāgamaḥ kaścidāryā vā sā.tha lakṣyatē.


dēva lord, imē these, mṛgāḥ deer, kva where, (gatā gone), iti thus, tvayā by you, pṛṣṭāḥ enquired, sahasā suddenly, utthitāḥ got up, kṣitiṅ caiva land as well as, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam southern side, yathā thus, darśayanti are showing, ētām this, naiṛtām diśam south western direction, sādhu well, gacchāvahē both will go, kaścit some, āgamaḥ source, yadi syāt may be, atha at that, sā that, āryā vā noble lady, lakṣyatē may be found.

O lord! these deer are indicating the land on the southern side.Therefore it will be proper for both of us to proceed in the south-western direction. Maybe we will get some clue or find that noble Sita.
bāḍhamityēva kākutsthaḥ prasthitō dakṣiṇāṅ diśam৷৷3.64.23৷৷

lakṣmaṇānugataśśīmanvīkṣamāṇō vasundharām.


śrīmān Handsome one, kākutsthaḥ Rama, bāḍhamityēva saying 'yes', lakṣmaṇānugataḥ followed by Lakshmana, vasundharām land, vīkṣamāṇaḥ while looking at, dakṣiṇāṅ diśam southwards, prasthitaḥ he started.

Handsome Rama said, 'yes'and started in southern direction, carefully looking at the ground, followed by Lakshmana.
ēvaṅ sambhāṣamāṇau tāvanyōnyaṅ bhrātarāvubhau৷৷3.64.24৷৷

vasundharāyāṅ patitaṅ puṣpamārgamapaśyatām.


ēvam in that way, anyōnyam with each other, sambhāṣamāṇau conversing, (tau) ubhau both, bhrātarau brothers, vasundharāyām on the path, patitam puṣpamārgam path scattered with flowers, apaśyatām saw.

Talking with each other, the two brothers took the path on earth strewn with flowers.
tāṅ puṣpavṛṣṭiṅ patitāṅ dṛṣṭvā rāmō mahītalē৷৷3.64.25৷৷

uvāca lakṣmaṇaṅ vīrō duḥkhitō duḥkhitaṅ vacaḥ.


vīraḥ Valiant, rāmaḥ Rama, mahītalē on the ground, patitām fallen, tāṅ puṣpavṛṣṭim that shower of flowers, dṛṣṭvā seeing, duḥkhitaḥ sadly, duḥkhitam sorrowful, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmana, vacaḥ these words, uvāca spoke.

Seeing showers of flowers fallen on the ground, valiant Rama sadly said these words to sorrowful Lakshmana:
abhijānāmi puṣpāṇi tānīmānīha lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.26৷৷

pinaddhāni hi vaidēhyā mayā dattāni kānanē.


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana!, iha here, tāni those, imāni the very same ones, puṣpāṇi flowers, abhijānāmi I recognise them, iha here, kānanē in the forest, mayā by me, dattāni given, vaidēhyā by Vaidehi, pinaddhāni worn, hi indeed.

O Lakshmana, here are the same flowers I had given Vaidehi to wear in the forest. I can recognize them.
manyē sūryaśca vāyuśca mēdinī ca yaśasvinī৷৷3.64.27৷৷

abhirakṣanti puṣpāṇi prakurvantō mama priyam.


sūryaśca Sun too, vāyuśca wind also, yaśasvinī famed, mēdinī ca earth also, mama my, priyam pleasure, prakurvantaḥ while rendering, puṣpāṇi flowers, abhirakṣanti preserving, manyē I think.

I think the Sun, the wind and the famed earth have done me a favour by preserving these flowers.
ēvamuktvā mahābāhuṅ lakṣmaṇaṅ puruṣarṣabhaḥ৷৷3.64.28৷৷

uvāca rāmō dharmātmā giriṅ prasravaṇākulam.


puruṣarṣabhaḥ a bull among men, dharmātmā righteous, rāmaḥ Rama, mahābāhum long-armed, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, prasravaṇākulam full of streams, girim mountain, uvāca said.

Rigteous Rama, the best among men, having said these words to the long-armed Lakshmana, asked mount Prasravana, full of streams:
kaccit kṣitibhṛtāṅ nātha dṛṣṭā sarvāṅgasundarī৷৷3.64.29৷৷

rāmā ramyē vanōddēśē mayā virahitā tvayā.


kṣitibhṛtāṅ nātha king of the mountains, ramyē beautiful, vanōddhēśē in the woods, mayā by me, virahitā separated from me, sarvāṅgasundarī charming in all herlimbs, rāmā woman, tvayā you, kaccit whether, dṛṣṭā is seen?

O king of the mountains! have you seen a lady with beautiful limbs separated from me in this forest tract ?
kruddhō.bravīdgiriṅ tatra siṅhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṅ yathā৷৷3.64.30৷৷

tāṅ hēmavarṇāṅ hēmābhāṅ sītāṅ darśaya parvata.

yāvatsānūni sarvāṇi na tē vidhvaṅsayāmyaham৷৷3.64.31৷৷


tatra there, siṅhaḥ lion, kṣudramṛgaṅ petty animal, girim mountain, kruddhaḥ angry, abravīt said, parvata mountain, aham I, tē your, sarvāṇi all, sānūni slopes, yāvat before, na vidhvaṅsayāmi I do not destroy, hēmavarṇām golden complexioned, hēmābhām with lustre like gold, sītām Sita, darśaya show.

Like a lion aiming at a petty animal, angry Rama said, O Mountain before I destroy all your slopes show me that golden-hued Sita with lustre like gold.
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa parvatō maithilīṅ prati.

śaṅsanniva tatassītāṅ nādarśayata rāghavē৷৷3.64.32৷৷


rāmēṇa by Rama, maithilīṅ Maithili, prati towards, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having said, parvataḥ mountain, tataḥ thereafter, sītām Sita, śaṅsanniva appeared as if telling, rāghavē to Rama, nādarśayata not shown.

Thus addressed by Rama, the mountain echoed as if it was telling about Sita but did not show her to Rama.
tatō dāśarathī rāma uvāca ca śilōccayam.

mama bāṇāgninirdagdhō bhasmībhūtō bhaviṣyasi৷৷3.64.33৷৷

asēvyaḥ satataṅ caiva nistṛṇadrumapallavaḥ.


tataḥ then, dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's son, rāmaḥ Rama, śilōccayam to the mountain, uvāca ca said, mama my, bāṇāgninirdagdhaḥ burnt by the fire of my arrows, bhasmībhūtaḥ reduced to ashes, satatam always, asēvyaḥ unfit to be served, nistṛṇadrumapallavaḥ with no grass, no trees, no twig, bhaviṣyasi you will be there.

Rama, Dasaratha's son said to the mountain, The fire of my arrows will reduce you to ashes.You will have no grass, no tree, no twig. You will be unfit to be served any more.
imāṅ vā saritaṅ cādya śōṣayiṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.34৷৷

yadi nākhyāti mē sītāmāryāṅ candranibhānanām.


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, āryām noble, candranibhānanām Moon-like face, sītām Sita, mē to me, nākhyāti not tell, adya right now, imām this, saritaṅ vā to the river too, śōṣayiṣyāmi will make it dry.

O Lakshmana! if this river does not tell me about that noble Sita with countenance like the moon, I will drain it dry right now.
ēvaṅ sa ruṣitō rāmō didhakṣanniva cakṣuṣā৷৷3.64.35৷৷

dadarśa bhūmau niṣkrāntaṅ rākṣasasya padaṅ mahat.

trastāyā rāmakāṅkṣiṇyāḥ pradhāvantyā itastataḥ৷৷3.64.36৷৷

rākṣasēnānuvṛttāyā maithilyāśca padānyatha.


ēvam in that way, ruṣitaḥ in anger, cakṣuṣā with eyes, didhakṣanniva as if wishing to burn, rāmaḥ Rama, bhūmau ground, niṣkrāntam crossed, rākṣasasya the demon's, mahat large, padam footprint, atha and then, trastāyāḥ of the frightened lady, rāmakāṅkṣiṇyāḥ who longed for Rama, itastataḥ here and there, pradhāvantyāḥ who was running, rākṣasēna by the demon, anuvṛttāyāḥ who followed, maithilyāḥ Maithili's, padāni ca footprints, dadarśa saw.

While Rama was angry with his eyes burning, he saw on the ground as he advanced large footprints of a demon and then the footprints of Maithili which signified as if chased by the demon, she was frightened and was running hither and thither, longing to see Rama.
sa samīkṣya parikrāntaṅ sītāyā rākṣasasya ca৷৷3.64.37৷৷

bhagnaṅ dhanuśca tūṇī ca vikīrṇaṅ bahudhā ratham.

sambhrāntahṛdayō rāmaśśaśaṅsa bhrātaraṅpriyam৷৷3.64.38৷৷


saḥ rāmaḥ that Rama, sītāyāḥ Sita's, rākṣasasya ca and the demon's, parikrāntam movement, bhagnam broken, dhanuśca bow, tūṇī ca and quiver, bahudhā many ways, vikīrṇam scattered, ratham chariot, samīkṣya having seen, sambhrānta hṛdayaḥ bewidered mind, priyam loving, bhrātaram brother, śaśaṅsa told.

Bewildered to see the broken bow and quiver and many splinters of the chariot scattered all over, Rama said to his loving brother Lakshmana:
paśya lakṣmaṇa vaidēhyāśaśīrṇāḥ kanakabindavaḥ.

bhūṣaṇānāṅ hi saumitrē mālyāni vividhāni ca৷৷3.64.39৷৷


saumitrē son of Sumitra, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, paśya see, vaidēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, bhūṣaṇānām of the ornaments, kanakabindavaḥ golden bits, śīrṇāḥ shattered, vividhāni many kinds, mālyāni garlands, ca also.

O Saumitri ! see the many broken bits of gold ornaments and garlands.
taptabindunikāśaiśca citraiḥ kṣatajabindubhiḥ.

āvṛtaṅ paśya saumitrē sarvatō dharaṇītalam.3.64.40৷৷


saumitrē Lakshmana, taptabindunikāśaiḥ shining like drops of gold, citraiḥ variegated, kṣatajabindubhiḥ drops of blood, sarvataḥ all over, āvṛtam spread, dharaṇītalām on the ground, paśya see.

See, O Lakshmana, the patches of blood looking like drops of shining gold spread all over the ground.
manyē lakṣmaṇa vaidēhī rākṣasaiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ.

bhitvābhitvā vibhaktā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati৷৷3.64.41৷৷


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, vaidēhī Vaidehi, kāmarūpibhiḥ assuming any form at their will, rākṣasaiḥ by the demons, bhittvābhittvā breaking into pieces, vibhaktā vā she is torn, bhakṣitā vā eaten or,
bhaviṣyati would have, manyē I think.

O Lakshmana, Vaidehi might have been cut into pieces, and eaten up by the demons who can assume any form at their free will.
tasyā nimittaṅ vaidēhyā dvayōrvivadamānayōḥ.

babhūva yuddhaṅ saumitrē ghōraṅ rākṣasayōriha৷৷3.64.42৷৷


saumitrē O Lakshmana, tasyāḥ her, vēdēhyāḥ Vaidehi's, nimittam on account of her, vivadamānayōḥ contesting with, dvayōḥ of both, rākṣasayōḥ demons, iha here, ghōram dreadful, yuddham war, babhūva was fought.

O Lakshmana, two demons might have fought a dreadful duel at this place contesting with each other for the sake of Vaidehi.
muktāmaṇimayaṅ cēdaṅ tapanīyavibhūṣitam.

dharaṇyāṅ patitaṅ saumya kasya bhagnaṅ mahaddhanuḥ৷৷3.64.43৷৷


saumya O handsome Lakshmana, kasya whose, idam this, muktāmaṇimayam embedded with pearls and gems, tapanīyavibhūṣitam adorned with gold, mahat dhanuḥ huge bow, bhagnam broken, dharaṇyām on the ground, patitam fallen?

O handsome Lakshmana! whose is this huge bow embedded with pearls and gems and adorned with gold fallen on the ground?
taruṇādityasaṅkāśaṅ vaiḍūryagulikācitam.

viśīrṇaṅ patitaṅ bhūmau kavacaṅ kasya kāñcanam৷৷3.64.44৷৷


taruṇādityasaṅkāśam looking like the morning Sun, vaiḍūryagulikācitam studded with Vaidurya (cat's eye), kāñcanam gold, kasya whose, viśīrṇam spread all over, kavacam shield, bhūmau on the ground, patitam fallen?

Whose is this shield of gold studded with Vaidurya, broken and strewn all over the ground, shining like the morning Sun?
chatraṅ śataśalākaṅ ca divyamālyōpaśōbhitam.

bhagnadaṇḍamidaṅ kasya bhūmau samyaṅnipātitam৷৷3.64.45৷৷


śataśalākaṅ ca having a hundred spokes, divyamālyōpaśōbhitam festooned with wonderful flower garlands, bhagnadaṇḍam with broken staff, idaṅ chatram this parasol, kasya whose, samyak thrown down, bhūmau on the ground, nipātitam fallen?

Whose parasol is this with a hundred spokes, festooned with wonderful flowers thrown down on the ground with broken staff ?
kāñcanōraśchadā ścēmē piśācavadanāḥ kharāḥ.

bhīmarūpā mahākāyāḥ kasya vā nihatā raṇē৷৷3.64.46৷৷


kāñcanōraśchadāḥ with golden chest-coverings, piśācavadanāḥ those with devil's face, bhīmarūpāḥ fierceful, mahākāyāḥ those with huge body, raṇē in war, nihatāḥ slain, imē these, kharāḥ donkeys, kasya vā whose?

Whose are these donkeys, with golden chest-coverings, with the devil's face, fierceful and huge and slain in the encounter ?
dīptapāvakasaṅkāśō dyutimānsamaradhvajaḥ.

apaviddhaśca bhagnaśca kasya sāṅgrāmikō rathaḥ৷৷3.64.47৷৷


dīptapāvakasaṅkāśaḥ looking like burning fire, dyutimān dazzling, samaradhvajaḥ battle flag, kasya vā whose, sāṅgrāmikaḥ useful in battle, rathaḥ chariot, bhagnaḥ broken, apaviddhaśca turned upside down and broken.

Whose war chariot with a battle flag is this, shining like burning fire, turned upside down and broken?
rathākṣamātrā viśikhāstapanīyavibhūṣaṇāḥ.

kasyēmē.bhihatā bāṇāḥ prakīrṇā ghōrakarmaṇaḥ৷৷3.64.48৷৷


rathākṣamātrāḥ of the size of the chariot's axle, viśikhāḥ pointless arrows, tapanīyavibhūṣaṇāḥ adorned with bright gold, abhihatāḥ destroyed, imē bāṇāḥ these arrows, ghōrakarmaṇaḥ performing terrible deeds, kasya whose, prakīrṇāḥ scattered about?

Whose are these pointless arrows of the size of a chariot axle adorned with bright gold destroyed and scattered ? Who is he that has performed such terrible deeds?
śarāvarau śaraiḥ pūrṇau vidhvastau paśya lakṣmaṇa.

pratōdābhīśuhastō vai kasyāyaṅ sārathirhataḥ৷৷3.64.49৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, śaraiḥ with arrows, pūrṇau both filled, vidhvastau shattered, śarāvarau two quivers, paśya see, pratōdābhīśuhastaḥ a man holding a whip and reins in the hands, hataḥ slain, ayaṅ sārathiḥ this charioteer, kasya whose?

O Lakshmana ! look at these two quivers filled with arrows and lying shattered. The charioteer is holding a whip and reins in his hands and is lying dead. To whom do they belong?
kasyēmau puruṣavyāghra śayātē nihatau yudhi.

cāmaragrāhiṇau saumya sōṣṇīṣamaṇikuṇḍalau৷৷3.64.50৷৷


puruṣavyāghra O tiger among men, saumya O handsome one, sōṣṇīṣamaṇikuṇḍalau with head dress and ear-rings made of gems, imau these two, cāmara grāhiṇau carriers of fans, kasya whose, yudhi in war, nihatau both are slain, śayātē both fallen down?

O best among men, O handsome Lakshmana! see these carriers of fans with head dress and ear-rings studded with gems lying slain in the combat. Whose are they ?
padavīpuruṣasyaiṣā vyaktaṅ kasyāpi rakṣasaḥ.

vairaṅ śataguṇaṅ paśya mamēdaṅ jīvitāntakam৷৷3.64.51৷৷


ēṣā this, vyaktam it is certain, kasyāpi some one's, puruṣasya man's, rakṣasaḥ demon's, padavī path, mama for me, jīvitāntakam till the end of my life, śataguṇam hundred times, idaṅ vairam enmity like this, paśya see.

This indeed is the path the man or the demon has traversed. My enmity with him now has become hundredfold. This will end only with the extermination of his life.
sughōrahṛdayaissaumya rākṣasaiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ.

hṛtā mṛtā vā sītā sā bhakṣitā vā tapasvinī৷৷3.64.52৷৷

nadharmastrāyatē sītāṅ hriyamāṇāṅ mahāvanē.


saumya O handsome one, tapasvinī a helpless woman, sā sītā that Sita, sughōrahṛdayaiḥ of terrible heart, kāmarūpibhiḥ those who can change their form at will, rākṣasaiḥ by the demons, hṛtā vā abducted or, bhakṣitā vā eaten away or, mṛtā vā or killed, mahāvanē dense forest, hriyamāṇām while she is being carried off, sītām Sita, dharmaḥ righteousness, na trāyatē I did not protect.

O handsome one, those demons can change their form at will and are of dreadful nature. Have they abducted or devoured or killed her in this great forest. Even her righteousness could not protect the helpless Sita.
bhakṣitāyāṅ hi vaidēhyāṅ hṛtāyāmapi lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.53৷৷

kē hi lōkē priyaṅ kartuṅ śaktāssaumya mamēśvarāḥ.


saumya lakṣmaṇa O handsome Lakshmana, vaidēhyām when Sita, bhakṣitāyām was eaten, hṛtāyāmapi or carried off, mama to me, lōkē in this world, kē īśvarāḥ which of the gods, priyam happiness, kartum do, śaktāḥ not feasible?

If Sita has been devoured or kidnapped, none in this world or even gods could do anything to make me happy, O handsome Lakshmana !
kartāramapi lōkānāṅ śūraṅ karuṇavēdinam৷৷3.64.54৷৷

ajñānādavamanyēratsarvabhūtāni lakṣmaṇa.


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, lōkānām of these worlds, kartāramapi one who may be even the creator, śūram hero, karuṇavēdinam compassionate, sarvabhūtāni all beings, ajñānāt by ignorance, avamanyēran will disrespect.

O Lakshmana! even the compassionate and heroic Creator of the worlds will be disrespected by all beings, however ignorantly (if such things are allowed to happen).
mṛduṅ lōkahitē yuktaṅ dāntaṅ karuṇavēdinam৷৷3.64.55৷৷

nirvīrya iti manyantē nūnaṅ māṅ tridaśēśvarāḥ.


mṛdum gentle, lōkahitē for the welfare of the world, yuktam one engaged, dāntam self-restraint, karuṇavēdinam a compassionate, mām me, tridaśēśvarāḥ the gods, nirvīryaḥ iti as weak, manyantē will consider, nūnam certainly.

The gods will certainly consider me a man engaged in the welfare of the world, a man of self-restraint and compassion, but at the same time a weak man.
māṅ prāpya hi guṇō dōṣassaṅvṛttaḥ paśya lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.56৷৷

adyaiva sarvabhūtānāṅ rakṣasāmabhavāya ca.

saṅhṛtyaiva śaśijyōtsnāṅ mahānsūrya ivōditaḥ৷৷3.64.57৷৷

saṅhṛtyaiva guṇānsarvānmama tējaḥ prakāśatē.


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, mām me, prāpya after attaining, guṇaḥ merit, dōṣaḥ demerit, saṅvṛttaḥ been converted, paśya see, śaśijyōtsnām light of the Moon, saṅhṛtyaiva on effacing, uditaḥ risen, mahān
mighty, sūryaḥ Sun, iva like, tējaḥ glow, sarvān all, guṇān qualities, saṅhṛtyaiva effacing, adyaiva now, sarvabhūtānām to all beings, rakṣasāṅ ca of demons, abhavāya for their extermination, prakāśatē will shine forth.

O Lakshmana! even demerits turn into merits when they come in contact with me. Just as the Sun shines, effacing the moonlight, my brilliance will outshine my demerits of exterminating all (wicked) beings including the demons.
naiva yakṣā na gandharvā na piśācā na rākṣasāḥ৷৷3.64.58৷৷

kinnarā vā manuṣyā vā sukhaṅ prāpsyanti likṣmaṇa.


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, yakṣāḥ yakshas, sukham peace, naiva prāpsyanti not attain, yakṣāḥ yakshas, na not, piśācāḥ goblins, na not, rakṣasāḥ demons, na not, kinnarā vā or kinneras, manuṣyā vā or human beings,

O Lakshmana, neither yakshas, nor goblins nor demons nor kinneras nor humans will be in peace now.
mamāstrabāṇasampūrṇamākāśaṅ paśya lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.59৷৷

nissampātaṅ kariṣyāmi hyadya trailōkyacāriṇām.


lakṣmaṇa Lakshman, mama my, astrabāṇasampūrṇam filled with all my weapons and arrows, ākāśam sky, adya now, trailōkyacāriṇām those who move in the three worlds, nissampātam impossible to descend, kariṣyāmi I will do, paśya see.

O Lakshmana, just see, I will fill the sky with all my weapons and arrows and make all movements impossible in the three worlds.
sanniruddhagrahagaṇamāvāritaniśākaram৷৷3.64.60৷৷

vipraṇaṣṭānalamarudbhāskaradyutisaṅvṛtam.

vinirmathitaśailāgraṅ śuṣyamāṇajalāśayam৷৷3.64.61৷৷

dhvastadrumalatāgulmaṅ vipraṇāśitasāgaram.

trailōkyaṅ tu kariṣyāmi saṅyuktaṅ kālakarmaṇā৷৷3.64.62৷৷


trailōkyam the three worlds, sanniruddhagrahagaṇam obstruct planets, āvāritaniśākaram preventing the movement of the Moon, vipraṇaṣṭānalamarudbhāskaradyutisaṅvṛtam blocking and destroying the radiance of fire, wind and Sun, vinirmathitaśailāgram crushing the mountain tops, śuṣyamāṇajalāśayam drying up the tanks, dhvastadrumalatāgulmam destroying the trees, creepers and shrubs, vipraṇāśitasāgaram annihilating the ocean, kālakarmaṇā by a fatal act, saṅyuktam together, kariṣyāmi I will do.

I will obstruct the movement of planets and the Moon, destroy the radiance of the Sun, the fire and block the wind; crush the mountain tops, dry up the tanks, destroy the trees shrubs and creepers and annihilate the oceans. I shall bring about this fatal change at once in the three worlds.
na tāṅ kuśalinīṅ sītāṅ pradāsyanti mamēśvarāḥ.

asminmuhūrtē saumitrē mama drakṣyanti vikramam৷৷3.64.63৷৷


saumitrē O Lakshmana, īśvarāḥ gods, tāṅ sītām Sita, kuśalinīm safely, mama to me, na pradāsyanti not give, asmin in this, muhūrtē this moment, mama my, vikramam power, drakṣyanti they will witness.

If the gods do not return my Sita safely to me, O Lakshmana ! they will witness my power right now.
nākāśamutpatiṣyanti sarvabhūtāni lakṣmaṇa.

mama cāpaguṇōnmuktairbāṇajālairnirantaram৷৷3.64.64৷৷


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, sarvabhūtāni all beings, mama me, cāpaguṇōnmuktai: arrows released from my bow string, bāṇajālaiḥ by arrows, nirantaram will have no place to move, ākāśam sky, na utpatiṣyanti not fly.

Lakshmana! no beings will be able to move in the sky, blocked by arrows released from my bow-string there will be no space left there.
arditaṅ mama nārācairdhvastabhrāntamṛgadvijam.

samākulamamaryādaṅ jagatpaśyādya lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.65৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, adya now, mama my, nārācaiḥ by darts, arditam distressed, dhvastabhrāntamṛgadvijam samākulam beasts and birds confused and destroyed, amaryādam crossing all limits, jagat world, paśya see.

O Lakshmna! now beasts and birds will be confused and destroyed by my darts.You will see them crossing all limits of propriety.
ākarṇapūrṇairiṣubhirjīvalōkaṅ durāvaraiḥ.

kariṣyē maithilīhētōrapiśācamarākṣasam৷৷3.64.66৷৷


maithilīhētōḥ for the sake of Maithili, jīvalōkam this world of mortals, ākarṇapūrṇaiḥ fully drawing up to the ears, durāvaraiḥ by the irresistible, iṣubhiḥ arrows, apiśācam devoid of evil spirits, arākṣasam without demons, kariṣyē will do.

For the sake of Maithili I will render this world devoid of goblins and demons with my irresistible arrows pulled up to my ears.
mama rōṣaprayuktānāṅ sāyakānāṅ balaṅ surāḥ.

drakṣyantyadya vimuktānāmatidūrātigāminām৷৷3.64.67৷৷


vimuktānām released, mama my, rōṣaprayuktānām released in rage, atidūrātigāminām of those that can reach very distant places, sāyakānām of the arrows, balam power, surāḥ gods, adya now, drakṣyanti will witness.

Now the gods will witness the power of my arrows released in great rage which can hit distant targets.
naiva dēvā na daitēyā na piśācā na rākṣasāḥ.

bhaviṣyanti mama krōdhāttrailōkyē vipraṇāśitē৷৷3.64.68৷৷


mama my, krōdhāt due to anger, trailōkyē in three worlds, vipraṇāśitē destroyed, dēvāḥ gods, naiva bhaviṣyanti not exist, daitēyāḥ demons, na not, piśācāḥ evil spirits, na not , rākṣasāḥ demons, na not.

My anger will destroy all the gods, demons and evil spirits. They will be extinghished from the three worlds.
dēvadānavayakṣāṇāṅ lōkā yē rakṣasāmapi.

bahudhā na bhaviṣyanti bāṇaughaiśśakalīkṛtāḥ৷৷3.64.69৷৷


dēvadānavayakṣāṇām of gods, demons and yakshas, rakṣasāmapi demons too, yē those, lōkāḥ worlds, bāṇaughaiḥ by the touch of my arrows, bahudhā many times, śakalīkṛtā: broken into pieces, na bhaviṣyanti not survive.

The worlds of gods, yakshas or even demons torn into shreds by my arrows will not survive.
nirmaryādānimānlōkānkariṣyāmyadya sāyakaiḥ.

hṛtāṅ mṛtāṅ vā saumitrē na dāsyanti mamēśvarāḥ৷৷3.64.70৷৷


saumitrē O Lakshmana, hṛtām a lady carried away, mṛtāṅ vā or dead, īśvarāḥ by gods, mama me, na dāsyanti do not give, adya now, sāyakaiḥ by arrows, imān this, lōkān worlds, nirmaryādān without any boundaries, kariṣyāmi will do.

If the gods do not hand over Sita to me either carried away or dead I will transgress these worlds, O Lakshmana !
tathārupāṅ hi vaidēhīṅ na dāsyanti yadi priyām.

nāśayāmi jagatsarvaṅ trailōkyaṅ sacarācaram৷৷3.64.71৷৷


tathārūpām in her true form, priyām my beloved, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, na dāsyanti yadi not give me, sarvam all, sacarācaram with animate and inanimate beings, trailōkyam three worlds, jagat world, nāśayāmi I will destroy.

If my beloved Vaidehi is not given back to me in her true form I will destroy the three worlds with all animate and inanimate beings.
ityuktvā rōṣatāmrākṣō rāmō niṣpīḍya kārmukam.

śaramādāya sandīptaṅ ghōramāśīviṣōpamam৷৷3.64.72৷৷

sandhāya dhanuṣi śrīmānrāmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ.

yugāntāgniriva kruddha idaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷3.64.73৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, śrīmān handsome, parapurañjayaḥ one who can conquer the cities of enemies, rāmaḥ Rama, iti thus, uktvā having said, rōṣatāmrākṣaḥ with eyes reddened in anger, kārmukam his bow, niṣpīḍya having pressed, āśīviṣōpamam comparable to a poisonous snake, ghōram dreadful, sandīptam glowing, śaram arrow, ādāya after taking out, dhanuṣi bow, sandhāya after stringing, yugāntāgniriva like fire at the time of the dissolution of the world, kruddhaḥ angry man, idam these, vacanam words, abravīt said.

After speaking these words, handsome Rama, his eyes red with anger, pressed his bow, took out the glowing arrow that was dreadful like a poisonous serpent, fixed it to his bow and said these words in a rage like the fire at the time of dissolution of the world.
yathā jarā yathā mṛtyuryathā kālō yathā vidhiḥ.

nityaṅ na pratihanyantē sarvabhūtēṣu lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.64.74৷৷

tathāhaṅ krōdhasaṅyuktō na nivāryō.smi sarvathā.


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, sarvabhūtēṣu in all beings, jarā old age, yathā as, mṛtyuḥ death, yathā as, kālaḥ time, yathā as, vidhiḥ fate, yathā as, nityam always, na pratihanyantē cannot be averted, tathā in the same way, krōdhasaṅyuktaḥ full of anger, aham I, sarvathā by all means, na nivāryaḥ not defy, asmi I.

Just as all beings in this world cannot avoid age and death, or defy time and fate so also none can prevent me at all when I am angry, O Lakshmana !
purēva mē cārudaṅtīmaninditāṅ diśanti sītāṅ yadi nādya maithilīm.

sadēvagandharvamanuṣyapannagaṅ jagatsaśailaṅ parivartayāmyaham৷৷3.64.75৷৷


cārudaṅtīm a lady with beautiful teeth, aninditām blemishless lady, maithilīm Maithili, sītām Sita, purēva as earlier, adya now, mē my, na diśanti yadi if they do not show me, aham I, sadēvagandharvamanuṣyapannagam gods, gandharvas, men, serpents, saśailam mountain, jagat world, parivartayāmi I will topsy-turvy.

I will topsy-turvy this entire world including the gods, the gandharvas, human beings, serpents and mountains if they do not show me the princess from Mithila, who is blemishless and whose teeth are beautiful
ityārśē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkēya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē catuṣṣaṣṭimassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
