[Lakshmana pacifies Rama -- explains that destruction of the world is not proper -- initiates the search.]

tapyamānaṅ tathā rāmaṅ sītāharaṇakarśitam.

lōkānāmabhavē yuktaṅ sāṅvartakamivānalam৷৷3.65.1৷৷

vīkṣamāṇaṅ dhanussajyaṅ niśśvasantaṅ punaḥ punaḥ.

dagdhukāmaṅ jagatsarvaṅ yugāntē ca yathā haram৷৷3.65.2৷৷

adṛṣṭapūrvaṅ saṅkruddhaṅ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṅ tu lakṣmaṇaḥ.

abravītprāñjalirvākyaṅ mukhēna pariśuṣyatā৷৷3.65.3৷৷


tathā that way, tapyamānam tormented by pain, rāmam Rama, sītāharaṇakarśitam emaciated by Sita's abduction, sāṅvartakam pertaining to dissolution of the world, analamiva the fire like, lōkānām of the worlds, abhavē to annihilate, yuktam ready, sajyam strung, dhanuḥ bow, vīkṣamāṇam while seeing, punaḥ punaḥ again and again, niśśvasantam sighing hot breath, yugāntē at the end of the world, haraṅ yathā like Lord Siva, sarvam all, jagat world, dagdhukāmam desiring to burn, adṛṣṭapūrvam never seen before, saṅkruddham enraged, rāmam Rama, dṛṣṭvā seeing, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, prāñjaliḥ with folded palms, pariśuṣyatā mouth dried up, mukhēna face, abravīt said.

Tormented and emaciated due to Sita's abduction, resembling the fire at the time of dissolution of the creation, ready to destroy the world, Rama looked at his bow strung again and again, breathing hot sighs like Lord Siva at the end of the creation, wishing to burn down the world in a rage. Lakshmana who had never seen Rama in such anger before said to him with folded hands and parched throat.
purā bhūtvā mṛdurdāntassarvabhūtahitē rataḥ.

na krōdhavaśamāpannaḥ prakṛtiṅ hātumarhasi৷৷3.65.4৷৷


purā in the past, mṛduḥ gentle, dāntaḥ self-restrained, sarvabhūtahitē in the welfare of all beings, rataḥ as engaged, bhūtvā after being, krōdhavaśam under the spell of anger, āpannaḥ attaining, prakṛtim natural form, hātum to give up, nārhasi do not behove.

Earlier you were gentle, self restrained and engaged in the welfare of all beings. (Now) it is not proper for you to give up your natural composure in anger.
candrē lakṣmīḥ prabhā sūryē gatirvāyau bhuvi kṣamā.

ētattu niyataṅ sarvaṅ tvayi cānuttamaṅ yaśaḥ৷৷3.65.5৷৷


candrē of the Moon, lakṣmīḥ grace, sūryē of the Sun, prabhā radiance, vāyau of the wind, gatiḥ motion, bhuvi on earth, kṣamā forbearance, ētat sarvam all this, niyatam always, tvayi in you, anuttamam the best, yaśaḥ ca and fame.

In you are always present the grace of the Moon, the radiance of the Sun, the motion of the wind, the forbearance of the earth and reputation.
ēkasya nāparādhēna lōkān hantuṅ tvamarhasi.

na tu jānāmi kasyāyaṅ bhagnassāṅgrāmikō rathaḥ৷৷3.65.6৷৷

kēna vā kasya vā hētōssāyudhassaparicchadaḥ.


ēkasya one's, aparādhēna by mistake, iha here, lōkān worlds, hantum to destroy, nārhasi it is not proper, sāyudhaḥ with weapons, saparicchadaḥ with all accesories, ayam this, sāṅgrāmikaḥ used in war, rathaḥ chariot, kasya whose, kēna by whom, kasya vā hētōḥ for what reason, bhagnaḥ broken, na jānāmi I do not know.

To destroy the world for the mistake of a single person is not proper. Why and by whom is this war-chariot broken with weapons and all its accesories I do not know.
khuranēmikṣataścāyaṅ siktō rudhirabindhubhiḥ৷৷3.65.7৷৷

dēśō nirvṛttasaṅgrāmassughōraḥ pārthivātmaja.


pārthivātmaja O prince , khuranēmikṣataḥ damaged by hooves of horses and the rims of the chariot', rudhirabindubhiḥ by drops of blood, siktaḥ drenched, sughōraḥ very dreadful, ayaṅ dēśaḥ this place, nirvṛttasaṅgrāmaḥ a great combat was fought here.

O prince, this place is damaged by the hooves of the horses and the rims of the chariot. It is soaked with drops of blood.Very dreadful must have been the fight here.
ēkasya tu vimardhō.yaṅ na dvayōrvadatāṅvara৷৷3.65.8৷৷

na hi vṛttaṅ hi paśyāmi balasya mahataḥ padam.


vadatām of those intelligent in speech, vara the best one, ayam this, ēkasya by one person, vimardhaḥ combat, dvayōḥ of two people, na not, mahataḥ great, balasya army, vṛttam this fight, padam footprints, na hi paśyāmi I do not see.

O, best of the eloquent ! this fight involves only one and not two. I do not see the footprints of a big army.
naikasya tu kṛtē lōkānvināśayitumarhasi৷৷3.65.9৷৷

yuktadaṇḍā hi mṛdavaḥ praśāntā vasudhādhipāḥ.


ēkasya kṛtē for one's sake, lōkān the worlds, vināśayitum to destroy, nārhasi not right, hi indeed, vasudhādhipāḥ lords of the earth, yuktadaṇḍāḥ punish the deserving, mṛdavaḥ gentle, praśāntāḥ peaceful.

To destroy the entire world for one individual is not right. The lords of the earth should remain gentle, peaceful and punish only the deserving.
sadā tvaṅ sarvabhūtānāṅ śaraṇyaḥ paramā gatiḥ৷৷3.65.10৷৷

kō nu dārapraṇāśaṅ tē sādhu manyēta rāghava.


tvam you, sarvabhūtānām of all beings, sadā always, śaraṇyaḥ a refuge, paramā gatiḥ ultimate resort, rāghava Raghava, tē to you, dārapraṇāśam lost track of her whereabouts, kō nu who will, sādhu proper, manyēta think.

You are the ultimate resort and refuge of all beings. Who would like that your wife should be abducted ?
saritassāgarāśśailā dēvagandharvadānavāḥ৷৷3.65.11৷৷

nālaṅ tē vipriyaṅ kartuṅ dīkṣitasyēva sādhavaḥ.


saritaḥ rivers, sāgarāḥ seas, śailāḥ mountains, dēvagandharvadānavāḥ gods, gandharvas and demons, tē to you, sādhavaḥ pious people, dīkṣitasyēva those who observe religious vows, vipriyam disagreeable, kartum to do, nālam they are not.

Just as pious men do not do anything disagreeable towards persons who observe religious vows, so also rivers, seas and mountains, gods, gandharvas and demons are not capable of causing unhappiness to you.
yēna rājanhṛtā sītā tamanvēṣitumarhasi৷৷3.65.12৷৷

madvitīyō dhanuṣpāṇissahāyaiḥ paramarṣibhiḥ.


rājan king, dhanuṣpāṇiḥ wielding a bow, madvitīyaḥ followed by one, sahāyaiḥ with the help of, paramarṣibhiḥ by great sages, sītā Sita, yēna whomsoever, hṛtā carried off, tam him, anvēṣitum to search, arhasi is proper for you.

O king! bow in hands, followed by me and with the help of great sages you should search for the one who has abducted Sita.
samudraṅ ca vicēṣyāmaḥ parvatāṅśca vanāni ca৷৷3.65.13৷৷

guhāśca vividhā ghōrā nadī padmavanāni ca.


samudraṅ ca in the oceans, parvatāṅśca in the mountains, vanāni ca and the forests, vividhāḥ several,
ghōrāḥ dreadful, guhāśca caves, nadīḥ rivers, padmavanāni lotus ponds, vicēṣyāmaḥ we will search.

We will search oceans, mountains, forests and several dreadful caves, rivers and lotus-ponds.
dēvagandharvalōkāṅśca vicēṣyāmassamāhitāḥ৷৷3.65.14৷৷

yāvannādhigamiṣyāmastava bhāryāpahāriṇam.


samāhitāḥ relentlessly, tava your, bhāryāpahāriṇam the abductor of your wife, yāvat so long as, nādhigamiṣyāmaḥwe will not find, dēvagandharvalōkāṅśca the world of the gods and gandharvas, vicēṣyāmaḥ we will search.

We will search relentlessly for the abductor of your wife everywhere including the world of gods and gandharvas till we find her.
na cētsāmnā pradāsyanti patnīṅ tē tridaśēśvarāḥ৷৷3.65.15৷৷

kōsalēndra tataḥ paścātprāptakālaṅ kariṣyasi.


kōsalēndra lord of Kosala, Rama, tridaśēśvarāḥ gods, tē to you, patnīm your wife, sāmnā with gentle request, na pradāsyanti not restore her, cēt if so, tataḥ then, paścāt later, prāptakālam at the right time, kariṣyasi will take action.

O lord of Kosala! when gods do not restore Sita on request, then you can think of taking action at the appropriate time.
śīlēna sāmnā vinayēna sītāṅ nayēna na prāpsyasi cēnnarēndra.

tatassamutsādaya hēmapuṅkhai rmahēndravajrapratimaiśśaraughaiḥ৷৷3.65.16৷৷


narēndra O king, śīlēna with right conduct, sāmnā by appeasing, vinayēna through humility, nayēna by diplomacy, sītām Sita, na prāpsyasi yadi if you do not get her, tataḥ then, hēmapuṅkhaiḥ with gold feathered, mahēndravajrapratimaiḥ equalling Indra's thunderbolt, śaraughaiḥ by stream of arrows, samutsādaya destroy.

O king! if you fail to get Sita through appeasement, through humility or diplomacy then you destroy (the three worlds) by your gold-tipped stream of arrows comparable to Indra's thunderbolt.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē pañcaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfifth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
