ಸಾರಗ್ರಾಹೀ who can grasp the essence, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪೂರ್ವಜ ಅಪಿ being elder, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ by Lakshmana, ಉಕ್ತಮಾತ್ರಃ ತು only when told by, ಮಹಾಸಾರಮ್ the great essence, ಸುಭಾಷಿತಮ್ wise counsel, ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ accepted.
Even though Rama was elder, he could grasp the quintessence of the wise counsel only after Lakshmana had said it.
ಸನ್ನಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಂ ಕೋಪಮಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ long-armed, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಮ್ risen, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his own, ಕೋಪಮ್ anger, ಸನ್ನಿಗೃಹ್ಯ after restraining, ಚಿತ್ರಮ್ wonderful, ಧನುಃ bow, ಅವಷ್ಟಭ್ಯ leaning over, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
Restraining his anger, the long-armed Rama leaned over his wonderful bow and spoke to Lakshmana:
ಕಿಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾವಹೇ ವತ್ಸ ಕ್ವ ವಾ ಗಚ್ಛಾವ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ.
ಕೇನೋಪಾಯೇನ ಗಚ್ಛೇಯಂ ಸೀತಾಮಿತಿ ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯ৷৷3.67.3৷৷
ಕೇನೋಪಾಯೇನ ಗಚ್ಛೇಯಂ ಸೀತಾಮಿತಿ ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯ৷৷3.67.3৷৷
ವತ್ಸ O child, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ Lakshmana, ಕಿಮ್ what, ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾವಹೇ shall we do, ಕ್ವ ವಾ where do we, ಗಚ್ಛಾವ will go, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಕೇನ ಉಪಾಯೇನ by what means, ಗಚ್ಛೇಯಮ್ may I reach, ಇತಿ this, ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯ think.
O dear Lakshmana, what shall we do? Where do we go ? Think of some means by which we can reach Sita.
ತಂ ತಥಾ ಪರಿತಾಪಾರ್ತಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ರಾಮಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.
ಇದಮೇವ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ತ್ವಮನ್ವೇಷಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷3.67.4৷৷
ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈರ್ಬಹುಭಿಃ ಕೀರ್ಣಂ ನಾನಾದ್ರುಮಲತಾಯುತಮ್.
ಇದಮೇವ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಂ ತ್ವಮನ್ವೇಷಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷3.67.4৷৷
ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈರ್ಬಹುಭಿಃ ಕೀರ್ಣಂ ನಾನಾದ್ರುಮಲತಾಯುತಮ್.
ತಥಾ so, ಪರಿತಾಪಾರ್ತಮ್ afflicted with grief, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ that Rama, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshman, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಬಹುಭಿಃ many, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈಃ by demons, ಕೀರ್ಣಮ್ full of, ನಾನಾದ್ರುಮಲತಾಯುತಮ್ covered with different trees and creepers, ಇಮಮ್ this, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನಮೇವ Janasthna alone, ಅನ್ವೇಷಿತುಮ್ to search, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ you should.
Lakshmana said to Rama, afflicted with grief, It is proper for you to (first) search in this Janasthana, covered with different kinds of trees and creepers, and teeming with demons.

ಆವಾಸಾಃ ಕಿನ್ನರಾಣಾಂ ಚ ಗನ್ಧರ್ವಭವನಾನಿ ಚ৷৷3.67.6৷৷
ಇಹ here, ಗಿರಿದುರ್ಗಾಣಿ difficult mountains, ನಿರ್ದರಾಃ valleys, ಕನ್ದರಾಣಿ ಚ and caves, ವಿವಿಧಾಃ many, ಘೋರಾಃ terrific, ನಾನಾಮೃಗಗಣಾಕುಲಾಃ inhabited by different animals, ಗುಹಾಶ್ಚ caverns, ಕಿನ್ನರಾಣಾಮ್ of kinneras, ಆವಾಸಾಃ dwelling-places, ಗನ್ಧರ್ವಭವನಾನಿ ಚ mansions of gandharvas, ಸನ್ತಿ are.
Here are difficult mountains, caves, valleys, dreadful caves full of different animals, dwelling-places of kinneras and mansions of gandharvas.
ತಾನಿ ಯುಕ್ತೋ ಮಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ತ್ವಮನ್ವೇಷಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.
ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಾ ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನೋ ನರರ್ಷಭ৷৷3.67.7৷৷
ಆಪತ್ಸು ನ ಪ್ರಕಮ್ಪನ್ತೇ ವಾಯುವೇಗೈರಿವಾಚಲಾಃ.
ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಾ ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನೋ ನರರ್ಷಭ৷৷3.67.7৷৷
ಆಪತ್ಸು ನ ಪ್ರಕಮ್ಪನ್ತೇ ವಾಯುವೇಗೈರಿವಾಚಲಾಃ.
ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯುಕ್ತಃ accompanied, ಮಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ along with me, ತಾನಿ those, ಅನ್ವೇಷಿತುಮ್ to search, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it is proper for you, ನರರ್ಷಭ: great men, ಬುದ್ಧಿಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾಃ endowed with wisdom, ತ್ವದ್ಧಿಧಾಃ of your type, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಃ great people, ವಾಯುವೇಗೈಃ speed of wind, ಅಚಲಾಃ ಇವ like mountains, ನ ಪ್ರಕಮ್ಪನ್ತೇ are not shaken.
Accompanied by me you should search for her in those spots. Great people endowed with wisdom do not destabilise in difficulties just as mountains are not shaken by the speed of the wind.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಸ್ತದ್ವನಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ವಿಚಚಾರ ಸಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ৷৷3.67.8৷৷
ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೋ ರಾಮಶ್ಶರಂ ಘೋರಂ ಸನ್ಧಾಯ ಧನುಷಿ ಕ್ಷುರಮ್.
ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೋ ರಾಮಶ್ಶರಂ ಘೋರಂ ಸನ್ಧಾಯ ಧನುಷಿ ಕ್ಷುರಮ್.
ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ becoming angry, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ having been told, ಸಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ along with Lakskhmana , ಧನುಷಿ in bow, ಘೋರಮ್ terrific, ಕ್ಷುರಂ ಶರಮ್ sharp arrows, ಸನ್ಧಾಯ fixing, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ತತ್ ವನಮ್ that forest, ವಿಚಚಾರ roamed.
Thus advised, the angry Rama fixed a sharp arrow to his bow and roamed in the forest accompanied by Lakshmana.
ತತಃ ಪರ್ವತಕೂಟಾಭಂ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಂ ದ್ವಿಜೋತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷3.67.9৷৷
ದದರ್ಶ ಪತಿತಂ ಭೂಮೌ ಕ್ಷತಜಾರ್ದ್ರಂ ಜಟಾಯುಷಮ್.
ದದರ್ಶ ಪತಿತಂ ಭೂಮೌ ಕ್ಷತಜಾರ್ದ್ರಂ ಜಟಾಯುಷಮ್.
ತತಃ then, ಪರ್ವತಕೂಟಾಭಮ್ like a mountain top, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಮ್ great, ದ್ವಿಜೋತ್ತಮಮ್ a wonderful bird, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಪತಿತಮ್ fallen down, ಕ್ಷತಜಾರ್ದ್ರಮ್ drenched with blood, ಜಟಾಯುಷಮ್ Jatayu, ದದರ್ಶ saw.
Then he saw the great Jatayu, a wonderful bird, looking like a mountain top, drenched in blood and fallen on the ground.
ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಗಿರಿಶೃಙ್ಗಾಭಂ ರಾಮೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷3.67.10৷৷
ಅನೇನ ಸೀತಾ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಾ ನಾತ್ರ ಸಂಶಯಃ.
ಅನೇನ ಸೀತಾ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಾ ನಾತ್ರ ಸಂಶಯಃ.
ಗಿರಿಶೃಙ್ಗಾಭಮ್ like a peak of the mountain, ತಮ್ him, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ to Lakshmana, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಅನೇನ by him, ವೈದೇಹೀ Vaidehi, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಭಕ್ಷಿತಾ is eaten, ಅತ್ರ in this case, ಸಂಶಯಃ doubt, ನ no.
On seeing Jatayu looking like the peak of a mountain, Rama said to Lakshmana, There is no doubt that this bird has devoured Vaidehi.
ಗೃಧ್ರರೂಪಮಿದಂ ರಕ್ಷೋ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಭವತಿ ಕಾನನೇ৷৷3.67.11৷৷
ಭಕ್ಷಯಿತ್ವಾ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೀಮಾಸ್ತೇ ಸೀತಾಂ ಯಥಾಸುಖಮ್.
ಏನಂ ವಧಿಷ್ಯೇ ದೀಪ್ತಾಸ್ಯೈರ್ಘೋರೈರ್ಬಾಣೈರಜಿಹ್ಮಗೈಃ৷৷3.67.12৷৷
ಭಕ್ಷಯಿತ್ವಾ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೀಮಾಸ್ತೇ ಸೀತಾಂ ಯಥಾಸುಖಮ್.
ಏನಂ ವಧಿಷ್ಯೇ ದೀಪ್ತಾಸ್ಯೈರ್ಘೋರೈರ್ಬಾಣೈರಜಿಹ್ಮಗೈಃ৷৷3.67.12৷৷
ಇದಮ್ this, ರಕ್ಷಃ demon, ಗೃಧ್ರರೂಪಮ್ in the guise of a vulture, ಕಾನನೇ in the forest, ಭವತಿ is, ವ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ it is clear, ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೀಮ್ large-eyed lady, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಭಕ್ಷಯಿತ್ವಾ after eating away, ಯಥಾಸುಖಮ್ happily, ಆಸ್ತೇ relaxing, ದೀಪ್ತಾಸ್ಯೈಃ glowing tipped, ಘೋರೈಃ terrific, ಅಜಿಹ್ಮಗೈಃ by those which can go straight, ಬಾಣೈಃ by darts, ಏನಮ್ him, ವಧಿಷ್ಯೇ l will kill.
This demon in the guise of a vulture has evidently eaten away the large-eyed Sita and is happily relaxing in the forest. With my terrific arrows with burning tips that can go straight I will kill him.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾಭ್ಯಪತದ್ಗೃಧ್ರಂ ಸನ್ಧಾಯ ಧನುಷಿ ಕ್ಷುರಮ್.
ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಸಮುದ್ರಾನ್ತಾಂ ಕಮ್ಪಯನ್ನಿವ ಮೇದಿನೀಮ್৷৷3.67.13৷৷

ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ saying so, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ in anger, ಧನುಷಿ on the bow, ಕ್ಷುರಮ್ sharp arrow, ಸನ್ಧಾಯ after fixing, ಸಮುದ್ರಾನ್ತಾಮ್ extending up to the sea, ಮೇದಿನೀಮ್ the earth, ಕಮ್ಪಯನ್ನಿವ as though shaking, ಗೃಧ್ರಮ್ vulture, ಅಭ್ಯಪತತ್ fell upon.
Having siad so, Rama took his bow, fixed the sharp arrow, and aimed at the vulture. The sea-bound earth trembled.
ತಂ ದೀನಂ ದೀನಯಾ ವಾಚಾ ಸಫೇನಂ ರುಧಿರಂ ವಮನ್.
ಅಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ ಪಕ್ಷೀ ತು ರಾಮಂ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಮ್৷৷3.67.14৷৷
ಅಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ ಪಕ್ಷೀ ತು ರಾಮಂ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಮ್৷৷3.67.14৷৷
ಪಕ್ಷೀ ತು but the bird, ಸಫೇನಮ್ foamy, ರುಧಿರಮ್ blood, ವಮನ್ vomitting, ದೀನಮ್ in a piteous way, ತಂ him, ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಮ್ Dasaratha's son, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ದೀನಯಾ pathetic, ವಾಚಾ with word, ಅಭ್ಯಭಾಷತ spoke these words.
But the vulture who was in a piteous state, vomitting foamy blood, spoke these words pathetically to Rama, son of Dasaratha:
ಯಾಮೋಷಧಿಮಿವಾಯುಷ್ಮನ್ನನ್ವೇಷಸಿ ಮಹಾವನೇ.
ಸಾ ದೇವೀ ಮಮ ಚ ಪ್ರಾಣಾ ರಾವಣೇನೋಭಯಂ ಹೃತಮ್৷৷3.67.15৷৷
ಸಾ ದೇವೀ ಮಮ ಚ ಪ್ರಾಣಾ ರಾವಣೇನೋಭಯಂ ಹೃತಮ್৷৷3.67.15৷৷
ಆಯುಷ್ಮನ್ long-lived one, ಯಾಮ್ whom, ಮಹಾವನೇ in this great forest, ಓಷಧಿಮಿವ like herbal medicine, ಅನ್ವೇಷಸಿ you are searching , ಸಾ ದೇವೀ that queen, ಮಮ my, ಪ್ರಾಣಾಃ ಚ life also, ಉಭಯಮ್ both, ರಾವಣೇನ by Ravana, ಹೃತಮ್ is taken away.
O Long-lived one ! she who you are searching in the forest like herbal medicine has been carried away by Ravana along with my life.
ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿರಹಿತಾ ದೇವೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ ರಾಘವ.
ಹ್ರಿಯಮಾಣಾ ಮಯಾ ದೃಷ್ಟಾ ರಾವಣೇನ ಬಲೀಯಸಾ৷৷3.67.16৷৷

I have seen her snatched from you and from Lakshmana and carried off by powerful Ravana.
ಸೀತಾಮಭ್ಯವಪನ್ನೋಹಂ ರಾವಣಶ್ಚ ರಣೇ ಮಯಾ.
ವಿಧ್ವಂಸಿತರಥಶ್ಚಾತ್ರ ಪಾತಿತೋ ಧರಣೀತಲೇ৷৷3.67.17৷৷

ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಅಭ್ಯವಪನ್ನಃ descended down, ಮಯಾ by me, ರಾವಣಶ್ಚ Ravana, ವಿಧ್ವಂಸಿತರಥಃ with his chariot destroyed, ಅತ್ರ in this place, ಧರಣೀತಲೇ on this ground, ಪಾತಿತಃ I fell down.
I descended down to protect Sita, and in the battle with Ravana his chariot destroyed fell down here on the ground.
ಏತದಸ್ಯ ಧನುರ್ಭಗ್ನಮೇತದಸ್ಯ ಶರಾವರಮ್.
ಅಯಮಸ್ಯ ರಥೋ ರಾಮ ಭಗ್ನಸಾಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮಿಕೋ ಮಯಾ৷৷3.67.18৷৷

ರಾಮ Rama, ಏತತ್ this, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಭಗ್ನಮ್ broken, ಧನುಃ bow, ಏತತ್ this, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಶರಾವರಮ್ quiver, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಮಯಾ by me, ಭಗ್ನಃ shattered, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಸಾಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮಿಕಃ battle, ರಥಃ chariot.
O Rama this is his broken bow, this is his quiver and this is his war-chariot all devastated by me.

ಅಯಂ ತು he is, ಯುಧಿ in the battle, ಮತ್ಪಕ್ಷನಿಹತಃ killed by my wings, ತಸ್ಯ ಸಾರಥಿಃ his charioteer, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ಪರಿಶ್ರಾನ್ತಸ್ಯ an exhausted one, ಮೇ my, ಪಕ್ಷೌ both wings, ಖಡ್ಗೇನ with a sword, ಛಿತ್ತ್ವಾ having cut, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ Vaidehi, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಆದಾಯ after taking, ವಿಹಾಯಸಮ್ into the sky, ಉತ್ಪಪಾತ flew up, ರಕ್ಷಸಾ by Ravana, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ earlier, ನಿಹತಮ್ slain, ಮಾಮ್ me, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಹನ್ತುಮ್ to kill, ನಾರ್ಹಸಿ not proper.
He is Ravana's charioteer slain by my wings in the battle. As I was exhausted in the encounter Ravana clipped my wings, took Sita, and flew into the sky. You need not kill me. I am already slain by the demon.
ರಾಮಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ತು ವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣಮುಖಸ್ತದಾ.

Having known from Jatayu the story of his beloved Sita, Rama was full of tears, his grief redoubled.

ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಂ ವನೇ ವಾಸಸ್ಸೀತಾ ನಷ್ಟಾ ಹತೋ ದ್ವಿಜಃ.
ಈದೃಶೀಯಂ ಮಮಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀರ್ನಿರ್ದಹೇದಪಿ ಪಾವಕಮ್৷৷3.67.24৷৷

Saying such words and showing filial affection, he caressed Jatayu repeatedly with Lakshmana.
ನಿಕೃತ್ತಪಕ್ಷಂ ರುಧಿರಾವಸಿಕ್ತಂ ಸ ಗೃಧ್ರರಾಜಂ ಪರಿರಭ್ಯ ರಾಮಃ.
ಕ್ವ ಮೈಥಿಲೀ ಪ್ರಾಣಸಮಾ ಮಮೇತಿ ವಿಮುಚ್ಯ ವಾಚಂ ನಿಪಪಾತ ಭೂಮೌ৷৷3.67.29৷৷

Rama hugged the king of vultures with servered wings, drenched in blood and asking him where Sita who was as dear to him as his life was, he dropped him and fell down on the ground.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅರಣ್ಯಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
