[Jatayu informs Rama about his combat with Ravana and Sita's abduction-- Jatayu's death-- cremation ]

rāmassamprēkṣya taṅ gṛdhraṅ bhuvi raudrēṇa pātitam.

saumitriṅ mitrasampannamidaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷3.68.1৷৷


raudrēṇa by fierce, bhuvi ground, pātitam thrown down, taṅ gṛdhram that vulture, prēkṣya seeing, rāmaḥ Rama, mitrasampannam friendly, saumitrim Lakshmana, idaṅ vacanam these words, abravīt spoke.

Seeing the vulture lying on the ground thrown down by the fierce demon, Rama said to friendly Lakshmana:
mamāyaṅ nūnamarthēṣu yatamānō vihaṅgamaḥ.

rākṣasēna hatassaṅkhyē prāṇāṅstyakṣyati dustyajān৷৷3.68.2৷৷


mama my, arthēṣu in my objective, yatamānaḥ while he is making efforts, ayaṅ vihaṅgamaḥ this bird, saṅkhyē in battle, rākṣasēna by demon, hataḥ struck, dustyajān hard to leave, prāṇān life, tyakṣyati going to give up, nūnam surely.

Struck down by the demon in the combat on my account this bird is going to give up his life which is indeed difficult.
ayamasya śarīrē.sminprāṇō lakṣmaṇa vidyatē.

tathā hi svarahīnō.yaṅ viklabassamudīkṣyatē৷৷3.68.3৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, asya his, asmin śarīrē in this body, prāṇaḥ life, (atikhinnaḥ suffering from intense pain), vidyatē appears, tathā hi like that, ayam he, svarahīnaḥ faint voice, viklabaḥ frightened, samudīkṣyatē feeling excruciating pain.

O Lakshmana, it appears he is frightened and is experiencing excruciating pain in the body. His voice sounds faint, too.
jaṭāyō yadi śaknōṣi vākyaṅ vyāharituṅ punaḥ.

sītāmākhyāhi bhadraṅ tē vadhamākhyāhi cātmanaḥ৷৷3.68.4৷৷


jaṭāyō Jatayu, punaḥ again, vyāharitum to speak, śaknōṣi yadi if you are able, tē bhadram be blessed, sītām about Sita, akhyāhi tell, ātmanaḥ yourself, vadham striking, ākhyāhi tell.

O Jatayu! If you are still able to speak, tell me about Sita and about how you have been struck down.
kiṅ nimittō.haratsītāṅ rāvaṇastasya kiṅ mayā.

aparāddhaṅ tu yaṅ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇēna hṛtā priyā৷৷3.68.5৷৷


rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, kiṅ nimittaḥ for what reason, sītām Sita, aharat abducted, mayā by me, tasya his, kim what, aparāddham crime, yam which, dṛṣṭvā seeing, priyā beloved, hṛtā taken?

Why did Ravana abduct Sita? What fault did he find with me so that he kidnapped my beloved ?
kathaṅ taccandrasaṅkāśaṅ mukhamāsīnmanōharam.

sītayā kāni cōktāni tasminkālē dvijōttama৷৷3.68.6৷৷


dvijōttama best of birds, candrasaṅkāśam Moon like, manōharam delightful, tat mukham her face, katham how, āsīt it was, tasmin kālē at the time of abduction, sītayā by Sita, kāni what, uktāni did she say?

O best of birds! how did her delightful, Moon-like face look when she was hijacked. What did she say at that time?
kathaṅ vīryaḥ kathaṅ rūpaḥ kiṅ karmā sa ca rākṣasaḥ.

kva cāsya bhavanaṅ tāta brūhi mē paripṛcchataḥ৷৷3.68.7৷৷


saḥ rākṣasaḥ the demon, kathaṅ vīryaḥ how powerful, kathaṅ rūpaḥ how did he look, kiṅ karmā what he does, asya his, bhavanaṅ ca mansion also, kva ca where, tāta dear, paripṛcchataḥ I am asking you, mē to me, brūhi please tell.

O father ! how powerful is that demon ? How does he look?What work does he do? Where does he dwell? Do answer my questions?
tamudvīkṣyātha dīnātmā vilapantamanantaram.

vācātisannayā rāmaṅ jaṭāyuridamabravīt৷৷3.68.8৷৷


anantaram incessantly, dīnātmā a piteous soul, jaṭāyuḥ Jatayu, vilapantam wailing, rāmam to Rama, udvīkṣya seeing, atha this, atisannayā in a faint voice, vācā spoke, idam these, abravīt said.

Thereafter Jatayu, a piteous soul, looked up at Rama who was crying incessantly and said this in a feeble voice:
hṛtā sā rākṣasēndrēṇa rāvaṇēna vihāyasā.

māyāmāsthāya vipulāṅ vātadurdinasaṅkulām৷৷3.68.9৷৷


sā she, rākṣasēndrēṇa by the lord of demons, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, vātadurdinasaṅkulām violent wind, vipulām huge, māyām magic, āsthāya creating, vihāyasā in the sky, hṛtā taken away.

Ravana, the lord of the demons created violent winds through terrific magic and whisked her away in the sky.
pariśrāntasya mē tāta pakṣau chitvā sa rākṣasaḥ.

sītāmādāya vaidēhīṅ prayātō dakṣiṇāṅ diśam৷৷3.68.10৷৷


tāta O my child, saḥ rākṣasaḥ that demon, pariśrāntasya when I was exhausted, mē myself, pakṣau wings, chittvā after cutting, vaidēhīm princess of Videha, sītām Sita, ādāya taking,dakṣiṇāṅ diśam southern, prayātaḥ went.

O my child ! when I was exhausted, that demon cut off my wings and carried Sita off in the southern direction.
uparudhyanti mē prāṇā dṛṣṭirbhramati rāghava.

paśyāmi vṛkṣānsauvarṇānuśīrakṛtamūrdhajān৷৷3.68.11৷৷


rāghava Rama, mē my, prāṇāḥ life, uparudhyanti obstructing, dṛṣṭiḥ sight, bhramati is reeling, anuśīrakṛtamūrdhajān root hair grown on tops, sauvarṇān golden , vṛkṣān trees, paśyāmi I see.

O scion of the Raghu race, I am gasping for breath. My eyes are reeling. I see root hair growing on the tops of golden trees.
yēna yāti muhūrtēna sītāmādāya rāvaṇaḥ.

vipraṇaṣṭaṅ dhanaṅ kṣipraṅ tatsvāmī pratipadyatē৷৷3.68.12৷৷

vindō nāma muhūrtō.yaṅ sa ca kākutstha nābudhat.


kākutstha O Rama, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, yēna muhūrtēna by such moment, sītām Sita, ādāya taking, yāti he, ayam this, vinda: Vinda, nāma by name, muhūrtaḥ time, vinaṣṭam lost, dhanam wealth, tatsvāmī that person, kṣipram quickly, pratipadyatē will obtain, saḥ ca and he, nābudhat did not know.

The time Ravana kidnapped Sita is known as 'Vinda'. The effect (of that time), is that her husband will regain his lost wealth. O scion of the Kakutstha race ! he (Ravana )did not know it.
tvatpriyāṅ jānakīṅ hṛtvā rāvaṇō rākṣasēśvaraḥ৷৷3.68.13৷৷

jhaṣavadbaḍiśaṅ gṛhya kṣipramēva vinaśyati.


rākṣasēśvaraḥ lord of the demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tvatpriyām your beloved, jānakīm Janaki, hṛtvā after carrying away, baḍiśam fish hook, gṛhya having picked up, jhaṣavat like the fish, kṣipramēva quickly, vinaśyati will be destroyed.

Ravana, king of the demons, will perish soon for running away with your beloved Janaki just like a fish carrying away a fish-hook (which causes its destruction).
na ca tvayā vyathā kāryā janakasya sutāṅ prati৷৷3.68.14৷৷

vaidēhyā raṅsyasē kṣipraṅ hatvā taṅ rākṣasaṅ raṇē.


tvayā by you, janakasya sutāṅ Janaka's daughter, prati with regard to, vyathā worry, na kāryā need not be, raṇē in battle, taṅ rākṣasam that demon, kṣipram soon, hatvā having slain, vaidēhyā with Vaidehi, raṅsyasē will sport.

You need not worry about Janaka's daughter. You will soon enjoy the company of your beloved, Vaidehi after killing that demon.
asammūḍhasya gṛdhrasya rāmaṅ pratyanubhāṣataḥ৷৷3.68.15৷৷

āsyātsusrāva rudhiraṅ mriyamāṇasya sāmiṣam.


rāmaṅ prati with Rama, anubhāṣataḥ conversing, asammūḍhasya of the bird that was not deluded, mriyamāṇasya while dying, gṛdhrasya vulture's, āsyāt from his mouth, sāmiṣam mixed with flesh, rudhiram blood, susrāva dripped.

As he(Jatayu) was speaking to Rama with an alert mind even while dying, blood mixed with flesh started oozing from Jatayu's mouth.
putrō viśravasassākṣādbhrātā vaiśravaṇasya ca৷৷3.68.16৷৷

ityuktvā durlabhānprāṇānmumōca patagēśvaraḥ.


viśravasaḥ Visrava's, putraḥ son, vaiśravaṇasya sākṣāt Vaisravana's lawful, bhrātā brother, iti thus,
uktvā said, patagēśvaraḥ Jatayu, the king of birds, durlabhān rare, prāṇān life, mumōca gave up.

Ravana was Visrava's son and Vaisravana's (Kubera's) brother, said Jatayu and gave up his rare life.
brūhi brūhīti rāmasya bruvāṇasya kṛtāñjalēḥ৷৷3.68.17৷৷

tvaktvā śarīraṅ gṛdhrasya jagmuḥ prāṇā vihāyasam.


kṛtāñjalēḥ waiting with folded palms, rāmasya Rama's, bruhi bruhi iti saying 'tell me, tell me', bruvāṇasya as he spoke so, gṛdhrasya of the vulture, prāṇāḥ life, śarīram body, tvaktvā after leaving, vihāyasam to the sky, jagmuḥ went.

As Rama was saying to the vulture with folded palms 'Tell me, tell me'( about Ravana) the life breath of the vulture soared into the sky leaving the body.
sa nikṣipya śirō bhūmau prasārya caraṇau tadā৷৷3.68.18৷৷

vikṣipya ca śarīraṅ svaṅ papāta dharaṇītalē.


saḥ Jatayu, tadā then, śiraḥ head, bhūmau on the ground, nikṣipya after throwing, caraṇau feet, prasārya stretching, svam his, śarīram body, dharaṇītalē on the ground, vikṣipya scattering, papāta fallen down.

Then Jatayu dropped his head down, his feet thrown about, his body outstretched on earth.
taṅ gṛdhraṅ prēkṣya tāmrākṣaṅ gatāsumacalōpamam৷৷3.68.19৷৷

rāmassubahubhirduḥkhairdīnassaumitrimabravīt.


subahubhiḥ with much, duḥkhai: with sorrow, dīnaḥ dejected, rāmaḥ Rama, tāmrākṣam eyes red (with tears), gatāsum with his life gone, acalōpamam looking like a mountain, taṅ gṛdhram to that vulture, prēkṣya seeing, saumitrim to Lakshmana, abravīt said.

Stricken with deep grief, his eyes red (with tears) Rama saw the vulture looking like a mountain. Seeing him dead, he said to Lakshmana:
bahūni rakṣasāṅ vāsē varṣāṇi vasatā sukham৷৷3.68.20৷৷

anēna daṇḍakāraṇyē viśīrṇamiha pakṣiṇā.


rakṣasām the demon's, vāsē dwelling-place, iha here, daṇḍakāraṇyē Dandaka forest, sukham happily, bahūni many, varṣāṇi years, vasatā living, anēna by this, pakṣiṇā by the bird, viśīrṇam lost life.

Dwelling for many years happily in Dandaka forest, the abode of demons, the bird lost his life (on our account).
anēkavārṣikō yastu cirakālasamutthitaḥ৷৷3.68.21৷৷

sō.yamadya hataśśētē kālō hi duratikramaḥ.


anēkavārṣikaḥ many years old, yaḥ he, cirakālasamutthitaḥ lived for a long time, saḥ ayam this Jatayu, adya now, hataḥ dead, śētē lying down, kālaḥ time (fate), duratikramaḥ hi not possible to escape.

This Jatayu, who lived for long years, is lying dead now. (The dictate of) destiny is inescapable.
paśya lakṣmaṇa gṛdhrō.yamupakārī hataśca mē৷৷3.68.22৷৷

sītāmabhyavapannō vai rāvaṇēna balīyasā.


lakṣmaṇa O Lakshmana, sītām Sita, abhyavapannaḥ he reached out for help, mē upakārī my well-wisher, ayaṅ gṛdhraḥ this vulture, balīyasā by the powerful, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, hataḥ is killed, paśya see.

O Lakshmana, see this Jatayu, my benefactor, killed by the powerful Ravana while he was reaching out to help Sita.
gṛdhrarājyaṅ parityajya pitṛpaitāmahaṅ mahat৷৷3.68.23৷৷

mama hētōrayaṅ prāṇānmumōca patagēśvaraḥ.


ayaṅ patagēśvaraḥ this lord of the birds, pitṛpaitāmaham ancestral, mahat great, gṛdhrarājyam kingdom of vultures, parityajya left, mama hētōḥ for my sake, prāṇān life, mumōca gave up.

This lord of the birds left his ancestral kingdom of viltures and gave up life for my sake.
sarvatra khalu dṛśyantē sādhavō dharmacāriṇaḥ৷৷3.68.24৷৷

śūrāśśaraṇyāssaumitrē tiryagyōnigatēṣvapi.


saumitrē Lakshmana, śūrāḥ heroes, śaraṇyāḥ protectors, dharmacāriṇaḥ rigteous people, sādhavaḥ good people, sarvatra all over, tiryagyōnigatēṣvapi even among animals and birds, dṛśyantē khalu are seen.

O Lakshmana! valiant souls and protectors, being righteous and honest are found even among animals and birds.
sītāharaṇajaṅ duḥkhaṅ na mē saumya tathāvidham৷৷3.68.25৷৷

yathā vināśē gṛdhrasya matkṛtē ca parantapa.


parantapa O scorcher of enemies, saumya handsome one, gṛdhrasya bird's, vināśē at his death, matkṛtē ca for my sake, yathā as, sītāharaṇajam caused by the abduction of Sita, duḥkham grief, tathāvidham in that way, na not experienced.

O scorcher of enemies, O handsome Lakshmana! the grief I experience due to Jatayu's death on my account is more intense than Sita's abduction.
rājā daśarathaśśrīmānyathā mama mahāyaśāḥ৷৷3.68.26৷৷

pūjanīyaśca mānyaśca tathā.yaṅ patagēśvaraḥ.


mahāyaśāḥ illustrious, śrīmān prosperous, rājā king, daśarathaḥ Dasaratha, mama for me, yathā as, pūjanīyaśca worthy of reverence, mānyaśca worthy of honour, ayam this, patagēśvaraḥ lord of the birds, tathā in the same way.

This lord of the birds for me is as worthy of reverence and honour as the famous and prosperous king Dasaratha.
saumitrē hara kāṣṭhāni nirmathiṣyāmi pāvakam৷৷3.68.27৷৷

gṛdhrarājaṅ didhakṣāmi matkṛtē nidhanaṅ gatam.


saumitrē Saumitri, kāṣṭhāni firewood, hara fetch, pāvakam fire, nirmathiṣyāmi I will rub, matkṛtē for my sake, nidhanam gatam died, gṛdhrarājam king of the birds, didhakṣāmi I wish to burn.

O Saumitri ! fetch firewood. I shall generate fire by rubbing them and cremate the king of the birds who has laid down his life for my sake.
nāthaṅ patagalōkasya citāmārōpya rāghava৷৷3.68.28৷৷

imaṅ dhakṣyāmi saumitrē hataṅ raudrēṇa rakṣasā.


rāghava O scion of the Raghu race, saumitrē Saumitri, raudrēṇa by the fierce, rakṣasā demon, hatam killed, imam this, patagalōkasya nātham lord of the world of birds, citām funeral pyre, ārōpya placing, dhakṣyāmi I will cremate with honour.

O scion of the Raghus ! I will place the body of the lord of the world of birds, killed by the fierce demon, on the funeral pyre and crimate him with honour.
yā gatiryajñaśīlānāmāhitāgnēśca yā gatiḥ৷৷3.68.29৷৷

aparāvartināṅ yā ca yā ca bhūmipradāyinām.

mayā tvaṅ samanujñātō gaccha lōkānanuttamān৷৷3.68.30৷৷

gṛdhrarāja mahāsattva saṅskṛtaśca mayā vraja.


mahāsattva very strong, gṛdhrarāja king of the birds, mayā by me, samanujñātaḥ permitted, tvam you, yajñaśīlānāma of those who perform sacrifices, yā such, gatiḥ resort, āhitāgnēśca for him who kindles sacrificial fires, yā gatiḥ attainment, aparāvartinām of those who beat no retreat (from battle), yā ca and such state, bhūmipradāyinām for those who offer land in charity, yā ca that state, gaccha go, mayā by me, saṅskṛtaḥ ca purified, anuttamān best of, lōkān worlds, vraja depart.

O mighty lord of the birds ! by my grace attain the state of those who perform sacrifices, who kindle and maintain sacrificial fires, who beat no retreat from the battlefield and who offer land in charity. Purified by my offering of fire, you may depart for the best of the worlds.
ēvamuktvā citāṅ dīptāmārōpya patagēśvaram৷৷3.68.31৷৷

dadāha rāmō dharmātmā svabandhumiva duḥkhitaḥ.


dharmātmā righteous, rāmaḥ Rama, ēvam in that way, uktvā having said, patagēśvaram lord of birds, citām on the pyre, ārōpya having laid, duḥkhitaḥ sorrowful, svabandhumiva like his own relation, dadāha cremated.

Thus said, righteous Rama laid him on the pyre and sadly cremated the lord of the birds as one would do to his own relative.
rāmō.tha sahasaumitrirvanaṅ gatvā sa vīryavān৷৷3.68.32৷৷

sthūlānhatvā mahārōhīnanutastāra taṅ dvijam.


atha then, vīryavān mighty, rāmaḥ Rama, sahasaumitriḥ with Saumitri, vanam forest, gatvā after going, sthūlān large, mahārōhīn stately deer, hatvā killed, taṅ dvijam to that bird (Jatayu), anutastāra spread it as offering.

Then the mighty Rama, accompanied by Saumitri, got into the forest and killed a huge
deer, brought it and spread it as an offering (to the dead Jatayu).
rōhimāṅsāni cōtkṛtya pēśīkṛtya mahāyaśāḥ৷৷3.68.33৷৷

śakunāya dadau rāmō ramyē haritaśādvalē.


mahāyaśāḥ famed, rāmaḥ Rama, rōhimāṅsāni flesh of the deer, utkṛtya cutting to pieces, pēśīkṛtya making into balls, ramyē in a lovely, haritaśādvalē green, grassy land, śakunāya the bird Jatayu, dadau offered.

Tearing the flesh of the deer to pieces and making them into balls, the celebrated Rama laid it on a lovely, green grassy land as offering to the bird.
yattatprētasya martyasya kathayanti dvijātayaḥ৷৷3.68.34৷৷

tatsvargagamanaṅ tasya pitryaṅ rāmō jajāpa ha.


tat that, yat whatever, dvijātayaḥ brahmins, prētasya for the dead, martyasya for a mortal, svargagamanam for ascending to heaven, kathayanti they utter, tat all that, pitryam pertaining to father, tasya that, jajāpa muttered.

Rama muttered the mantras recommended by brahmins for dead mortals as one would do for his father, to help him ascend to heaven.
tatō gōdāvarīṅ gatvā nadīṅ naravarātmajau৷৷3.68.35৷৷

udakaṅ cakratustasmai gṛdhrarājāya tāvubhau.


tataḥ then, ubhau tau they both, naravarātmajau two princes, gōdāvarīṅ nadīm to river Godavari, gatvā after reaching, tasmai for him, gṛdrarājāya for the vulture-king, udakam libations, cakratuḥ offered.

Then both the princes went down to river Godavari and offered libations for the king of vultures.
śāstradṛṣṭēna vidhinā jalē gṛdhrāya rāghavau৷৷3.68.36৷৷

snātvā tau gṛdhrarājāya udakaṅ cakratustadā.


tadā thereafter, (tau) rāghavau both scions of the Raghu dynasty, śāstradṛṣṭēna as ordained in scriptures, vidhinā duly, gṛdhrāya for the vulture, jalē in water, snātvā bathing, gṛdhrarājāya to the king of vultures, udakam water, cakratuḥ offered.

Thereafter both the scions of the Raghu dynasty bathed in water, offered libations for the king of vultures as ordained in the scriptures.
sa gṛdhrarājaḥ kṛtavānyaśaskaraṅ suduṣkaraṅ karma raṇē nipātitaḥ.

maharṣikalpēna ca saṅskṛtastadā jagāma puṇyāṅ gatimātmanaśśubhām৷৷3.68.37৷৷


raṇē in battle, suduṣkaram very difficult feat, yaśaskaram glorious, karma deed, kṛtavān done, nipātitaḥ was made to fall, saḥ gṛdhrarājaḥ that lord of the vultures, tadā then, maharṣikalpēna following the prescription of sages, saṅskṛtaḥ sanctified, puṇyām holy, śubhām auspicious, ātmanaḥ his, gatim state, jagāma reached.

The king of vultures had performed a very difficult and glorious feat by laying down his life fighting. Sanctified by Rama's offering as laid down in scriptures by the seers, he attained a holy, auspicious and divine state of the self.
kṛtōdakau tāvapi pakṣisattamē sthirāṅ ca buddhiṅ praṇidhāya jagmatuḥ.

pravēśya sītādhigamē tatō manō vanaṅ surēndraviva viṣṇuvāsavau৷৷3.68.38৷৷


tau api they both, kṛtōdakau offering libation, pakṣisattamē to the great bird, sthirām settled, buddhim mind, praṇidhāya employing their attention, tataḥ then, sītādhigamē to search Sita, manaḥ mind, pravēśya entered , surēndrau like two lords of gods, viṣṇuvāsavāviva like Visnu and Indra, vanam forest, jagmatuḥ went.

Rama and Lakshmana, like two lords of gods, Indra and Visnu, offered libations for the great bird with their settled minds and concentrated and then entered deeper into the forest turning their attention to the search for Sita.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē aṣṭaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyeighth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
