[Jatayu informs Rama about his combat with Ravana and Sita's abduction-- Jatayu's death-- cremation ]

రామస్సమ్ప్రేక్ష్య తం గృధ్రం భువి రౌద్రేణ పాతితమ్.

సౌమిత్రిం మిత్రసమ్పన్నమిదం వచనమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.68.1৷৷


రౌద్రేణ by fierce, భువి ground, పాతితమ్ thrown down, తం గృధ్రమ్ that vulture, ప్రేక్ష్య seeing, రామః Rama, మిత్రసమ్పన్నమ్ friendly, సౌమిత్రిమ్ Lakshmana, ఇదం వచనమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ spoke.

Seeing the vulture lying on the ground thrown down by the fierce demon, Rama said to friendly Lakshmana:
మమాయం నూనమర్థేషు యతమానో విహఙ్గమః.

రాక్షసేన హతస్సంఖ్యే ప్రాణాంస్త్యక్ష్యతి దుస్త్యజాన్৷৷3.68.2৷৷


మమ my, అర్థేషు in my objective, యతమానః while he is making efforts, అయం విహఙ్గమః this bird, సఙ్ఖ్యే in battle, రాక్షసేన by demon, హతః struck, దుస్త్యజాన్ hard to leave, ప్రాణాన్ life, త్యక్ష్యతి going to give up, నూనమ్ surely.

Struck down by the demon in the combat on my account this bird is going to give up his life which is indeed difficult.
అయమస్య శరీరేస్మిన్ప్రాణో లక్ష్మణ విద్యతే.

తథా హి స్వరహీనోయం విక్లబస్సముదీక్ష్యతే৷৷3.68.3৷৷


లక్ష్మణ Lakshmana, అస్య his, అస్మిన్ శరీరే in this body, ప్రాణః life, (అతిఖిన్నః suffering from intense pain), విద్యతే appears, తథా హి like that, అయమ్ he, స్వరహీనః faint voice, విక్లబః frightened, సముదీక్ష్యతే feeling excruciating pain.

O Lakshmana, it appears he is frightened and is experiencing excruciating pain in the body. His voice sounds faint, too.
జటాయో యది శక్నోషి వాక్యం వ్యాహరితుం పునః.

సీతామాఖ్యాహి భద్రం తే వధమాఖ్యాహి చాత్మనః৷৷3.68.4৷৷


జటాయో Jatayu, పునః again, వ్యాహరితుమ్ to speak, శక్నోషి యది if you are able, తే భద్రమ్ be blessed, సీతామ్ about Sita, అఖ్యాహి tell, ఆత్మనః yourself, వధమ్ striking, ఆఖ్యాహి tell.

O Jatayu! If you are still able to speak, tell me about Sita and about how you have been struck down.
కిం నిమిత్తోహరత్సీతాం రావణస్తస్య కిం మయా.

అపరాద్ధం తు యం దృష్ట్వా రావణేన హృతా ప్రియా৷৷3.68.5৷৷


రావణః Ravana, కిం నిమిత్తః for what reason, సీతామ్ Sita, అహరత్ abducted, మయా by me, తస్య his, కిమ్ what, అపరాద్ధమ్ crime, యమ్ which, దృష్ట్వా seeing, ప్రియా beloved, హృతా taken?

Why did Ravana abduct Sita? What fault did he find with me so that he kidnapped my beloved ?
కథం తచ్చన్ద్రసఙ్కాశం ముఖమాసీన్మనోహరమ్.

సీతయా కాని చోక్తాని తస్మిన్కాలే ద్విజోత్తమ৷৷3.68.6৷৷


ద్విజోత్తమ best of birds, చన్ద్రసఙ్కాశమ్ Moon like, మనోహరమ్ delightful, తత్ ముఖమ్ her face, కథమ్ how, ఆసీత్ it was, తస్మిన్ కాలే at the time of abduction, సీతయా by Sita, కాని what, ఉక్తాని did she say?

O best of birds! how did her delightful, Moon-like face look when she was hijacked. What did she say at that time?
కథం వీర్యః కథం రూపః కిం కర్మా స చ రాక్షసః.

క్వ చాస్య భవనం తాత బ్రూహి మే పరిపృచ్ఛతః৷৷3.68.7৷৷


సః రాక్షసః the demon, కథం వీర్యః how powerful, కథం రూపః how did he look, కిం కర్మా what he does, అస్య his, భవనం చ mansion also, క్వ చ where, తాత dear, పరిపృచ్ఛతః I am asking you, మే to me, బ్రూహి please tell.

O father ! how powerful is that demon ? How does he look?What work does he do? Where does he dwell? Do answer my questions?
తముద్వీక్ష్యాథ దీనాత్మా విలపన్తమనన్తరమ్.

వాచాతిసన్నయా రామం జటాయురిదమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.68.8৷৷


అనన్తరమ్ incessantly, దీనాత్మా a piteous soul, జటాయుః Jatayu, విలపన్తమ్ wailing, రామమ్ to Rama, ఉద్వీక్ష్య seeing, అథ this, అతిసన్నయా in a faint voice, వాచా spoke, ఇదమ్ these, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Thereafter Jatayu, a piteous soul, looked up at Rama who was crying incessantly and said this in a feeble voice:
హృతా సా రాక్షసేన్ద్రేణ రావణేన విహాయసా.

మాయామాస్థాయ విపులాం వాతదుర్దినసఙ్కులామ్৷৷3.68.9৷৷


సా she, రాక్షసేన్ద్రేణ by the lord of demons, రావణేన by Ravana, వాతదుర్దినసఙ్కులామ్ violent wind, విపులామ్ huge, మాయామ్ magic, ఆస్థాయ creating, విహాయసా in the sky, హృతా taken away.

Ravana, the lord of the demons created violent winds through terrific magic and whisked her away in the sky.
పరిశ్రాన్తస్య మే తాత పక్షౌ ఛిత్వా స రాక్షసః.

సీతామాదాయ వైదేహీం ప్రయాతో దక్షిణాం దిశమ్৷৷3.68.10৷৷


తాత O my child, సః రాక్షసః that demon, పరిశ్రాన్తస్య when I was exhausted, మే myself, పక్షౌ wings, ఛిత్త్వా after cutting, వైదేహీమ్ princess of Videha, సీతామ్ Sita, ఆదాయ taking,దక్షిణాం దిశమ్ southern, ప్రయాతః went.

O my child ! when I was exhausted, that demon cut off my wings and carried Sita off in the southern direction.
ఉపరుధ్యన్తి మే ప్రాణా దృష్టిర్భ్రమతి రాఘవ.

పశ్యామి వృక్షాన్సౌవర్ణానుశీరకృతమూర్ధజాన్৷৷3.68.11৷৷


రాఘవ Rama, మే my, ప్రాణాః life, ఉపరుధ్యన్తి obstructing, దృష్టిః sight, భ్రమతి is reeling, అనుశీరకృతమూర్ధజాన్ root hair grown on tops, సౌవర్ణాన్ golden , వృక్షాన్ trees, పశ్యామి I see.

O scion of the Raghu race, I am gasping for breath. My eyes are reeling. I see root hair growing on the tops of golden trees.
యేన యాతి ముహూర్తేన సీతామాదాయ రావణః.

విప్రణష్టం ధనం క్షిప్రం తత్స్వామీ ప్రతిపద్యతే৷৷3.68.12৷৷

విన్దో నామ ముహూర్తోయం స చ కాకుత్స్థ నాబుధత్.


కాకుత్స్థ O Rama, రావణః Ravana, యేన ముహూర్తేన by such moment, సీతామ్ Sita, ఆదాయ taking, యాతి he, అయమ్ this, విన్ద: Vinda, నామ by name, ముహూర్తః time, వినష్టమ్ lost, ధనమ్ wealth, తత్స్వామీ that person, క్షిప్రమ్ quickly, ప్రతిపద్యతే will obtain, సః చ and he, నాబుధత్ did not know.

The time Ravana kidnapped Sita is known as 'Vinda'. The effect (of that time), is that her husband will regain his lost wealth. O scion of the Kakutstha race ! he (Ravana )did not know it.
త్వత్ప్రియాం జానకీం హృత్వా రావణో రాక్షసేశ్వరః৷৷3.68.13৷৷

ఝషవద్బడిశం గృహ్య క్షిప్రమేవ వినశ్యతి.


రాక్షసేశ్వరః lord of the demons, రావణః Ravana, త్వత్ప్రియామ్ your beloved, జానకీమ్ Janaki, హృత్వా after carrying away, బడిశమ్ fish hook, గృహ్య having picked up, ఝషవత్ like the fish, క్షిప్రమేవ quickly, వినశ్యతి will be destroyed.

Ravana, king of the demons, will perish soon for running away with your beloved Janaki just like a fish carrying away a fish-hook (which causes its destruction).
న చ త్వయా వ్యథా కార్యా జనకస్య సుతాం ప్రతి৷৷3.68.14৷৷

వైదేహ్యా రంస్యసే క్షిప్రం హత్వా తం రాక్షసం రణే.


త్వయా by you, జనకస్య సుతాం Janaka's daughter, ప్రతి with regard to, వ్యథా worry, న కార్యా need not be, రణే in battle, తం రాక్షసమ్ that demon, క్షిప్రమ్ soon, హత్వా having slain, వైదేహ్యా with Vaidehi, రంస్యసే will sport.

You need not worry about Janaka's daughter. You will soon enjoy the company of your beloved, Vaidehi after killing that demon.
అసమ్మూఢస్య గృధ్రస్య రామం ప్రత్యనుభాషతః৷৷3.68.15৷৷

ఆస్యాత్సుస్రావ రుధిరం మ్రియమాణస్య సామిషమ్.


రామం ప్రతి with Rama, అనుభాషతః conversing, అసమ్మూఢస్య of the bird that was not deluded, మ్రియమాణస్య while dying, గృధ్రస్య vulture's, ఆస్యాత్ from his mouth, సామిషమ్ mixed with flesh, రుధిరమ్ blood, సుస్రావ dripped.

As he(Jatayu) was speaking to Rama with an alert mind even while dying, blood mixed with flesh started oozing from Jatayu's mouth.
పుత్రో విశ్రవసస్సాక్షాద్భ్రాతా వైశ్రవణస్య చ৷৷3.68.16৷৷

ఇత్యుక్త్వా దుర్లభాన్ప్రాణాన్ముమోచ పతగేశ్వరః.


విశ్రవసః Visrava's, పుత్రః son, వైశ్రవణస్య సాక్షాత్ Vaisravana's lawful, భ్రాతా brother, ఇతి thus,
ఉక్త్వా said, పతగేశ్వరః Jatayu, the king of birds, దుర్లభాన్ rare, ప్రాణాన్ life, ముమోచ gave up.

Ravana was Visrava's son and Vaisravana's (Kubera's) brother, said Jatayu and gave up his rare life.
బ్రూహి బ్రూహీతి రామస్య బ్రువాణస్య కృతాఞ్జలేః৷৷3.68.17৷৷

త్వక్త్వా శరీరం గృధ్రస్య జగ్ముః ప్రాణా విహాయసమ్.


కృతాఞ్జలేః waiting with folded palms, రామస్య Rama's, బ్రుహి బ్రుహి ఇతి saying 'tell me, tell me', బ్రువాణస్య as he spoke so, గృధ్రస్య of the vulture, ప్రాణాః life, శరీరమ్ body, త్వక్త్వా after leaving, విహాయసమ్ to the sky, జగ్ముః went.

As Rama was saying to the vulture with folded palms 'Tell me, tell me'( about Ravana) the life breath of the vulture soared into the sky leaving the body.
స నిక్షిప్య శిరో భూమౌ ప్రసార్య చరణౌ తదా৷৷3.68.18৷৷

విక్షిప్య చ శరీరం స్వం పపాత ధరణీతలే.


సః Jatayu, తదా then, శిరః head, భూమౌ on the ground, నిక్షిప్య after throwing, చరణౌ feet, ప్రసార్య stretching, స్వమ్ his, శరీరమ్ body, ధరణీతలే on the ground, విక్షిప్య scattering, పపాత fallen down.

Then Jatayu dropped his head down, his feet thrown about, his body outstretched on earth.
తం గృధ్రం ప్రేక్ష్య తామ్రాక్షం గతాసుమచలోపమమ్৷৷3.68.19৷৷

రామస్సుబహుభిర్దుఃఖైర్దీనస్సౌమిత్రిమబ్రవీత్.


సుబహుభిః with much, దుఃఖై: with sorrow, దీనః dejected, రామః Rama, తామ్రాక్షమ్ eyes red (with tears), గతాసుమ్ with his life gone, అచలోపమమ్ looking like a mountain, తం గృధ్రమ్ to that vulture, ప్రేక్ష్య seeing, సౌమిత్రిమ్ to Lakshmana, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Stricken with deep grief, his eyes red (with tears) Rama saw the vulture looking like a mountain. Seeing him dead, he said to Lakshmana:
బహూని రక్షసాం వాసే వర్షాణి వసతా సుఖమ్৷৷3.68.20৷৷

అనేన దణ్డకారణ్యే విశీర్ణమిహ పక్షిణా.


రక్షసామ్ the demon's, వాసే dwelling-place, ఇహ here, దణ్డకారణ్యే Dandaka forest, సుఖమ్ happily, బహూని many, వర్షాణి years, వసతా living, అనేన by this, పక్షిణా by the bird, విశీర్ణమ్ lost life.

Dwelling for many years happily in Dandaka forest, the abode of demons, the bird lost his life (on our account).
అనేకవార్షికో యస్తు చిరకాలసముత్థితః৷৷3.68.21৷৷

సోయమద్య హతశ్శేతే కాలో హి దురతిక్రమః.


అనేకవార్షికః many years old, యః he, చిరకాలసముత్థితః lived for a long time, సః అయమ్ this Jatayu, అద్య now, హతః dead, శేతే lying down, కాలః time (fate), దురతిక్రమః హి not possible to escape.

This Jatayu, who lived for long years, is lying dead now. (The dictate of) destiny is inescapable.
పశ్య లక్ష్మణ గృధ్రోయముపకారీ హతశ్చ మే৷৷3.68.22৷৷

సీతామభ్యవపన్నో వై రావణేన బలీయసా.


లక్ష్మణ O Lakshmana, సీతామ్ Sita, అభ్యవపన్నః he reached out for help, మే ఉపకారీ my well-wisher, అయం గృధ్రః this vulture, బలీయసా by the powerful, రావణేన by Ravana, హతః is killed, పశ్య see.

O Lakshmana, see this Jatayu, my benefactor, killed by the powerful Ravana while he was reaching out to help Sita.
గృధ్రరాజ్యం పరిత్యజ్య పితృపైతామహం మహత్৷৷3.68.23৷৷

మమ హేతోరయం ప్రాణాన్ముమోచ పతగేశ్వరః.


అయం పతగేశ్వరః this lord of the birds, పితృపైతామహమ్ ancestral, మహత్ great, గృధ్రరాజ్యమ్ kingdom of vultures, పరిత్యజ్య left, మమ హేతోః for my sake, ప్రాణాన్ life, ముమోచ gave up.

This lord of the birds left his ancestral kingdom of viltures and gave up life for my sake.
సర్వత్ర ఖలు దృశ్యన్తే సాధవో ధర్మచారిణః৷৷3.68.24৷৷

శూరాశ్శరణ్యాస్సౌమిత్రే తిర్యగ్యోనిగతేష్వపి.


సౌమిత్రే Lakshmana, శూరాః heroes, శరణ్యాః protectors, ధర్మచారిణః rigteous people, సాధవః good people, సర్వత్ర all over, తిర్యగ్యోనిగతేష్వపి even among animals and birds, దృశ్యన్తే ఖలు are seen.

O Lakshmana! valiant souls and protectors, being righteous and honest are found even among animals and birds.
సీతాహరణజం దుఃఖం న మే సౌమ్య తథావిధమ్৷৷3.68.25৷৷

యథా వినాశే గృధ్రస్య మత్కృతే చ పరన్తప.


పరన్తప O scorcher of enemies, సౌమ్య handsome one, గృధ్రస్య bird's, వినాశే at his death, మత్కృతే చ for my sake, యథా as, సీతాహరణజమ్ caused by the abduction of Sita, దుఃఖమ్ grief, తథావిధమ్ in that way, న not experienced.

O scorcher of enemies, O handsome Lakshmana! the grief I experience due to Jatayu's death on my account is more intense than Sita's abduction.
రాజా దశరథశ్శ్రీమాన్యథా మమ మహాయశాః৷৷3.68.26৷৷

పూజనీయశ్చ మాన్యశ్చ తథాయం పతగేశ్వరః.


మహాయశాః illustrious, శ్రీమాన్ prosperous, రాజా king, దశరథః Dasaratha, మమ for me, యథా as, పూజనీయశ్చ worthy of reverence, మాన్యశ్చ worthy of honour, అయమ్ this, పతగేశ్వరః lord of the birds, తథా in the same way.

This lord of the birds for me is as worthy of reverence and honour as the famous and prosperous king Dasaratha.
సౌమిత్రే హర కాష్ఠాని నిర్మథిష్యామి పావకమ్৷৷3.68.27৷৷

గృధ్రరాజం దిధక్షామి మత్కృతే నిధనం గతమ్.


సౌమిత్రే Saumitri, కాష్ఠాని firewood, హర fetch, పావకమ్ fire, నిర్మథిష్యామి I will rub, మత్కృతే for my sake, నిధనమ్ గతమ్ died, గృధ్రరాజమ్ king of the birds, దిధక్షామి I wish to burn.

O Saumitri ! fetch firewood. I shall generate fire by rubbing them and cremate the king of the birds who has laid down his life for my sake.
నాథం పతగలోకస్య చితామారోప్య రాఘవ৷৷3.68.28৷৷

ఇమం ధక్ష్యామి సౌమిత్రే హతం రౌద్రేణ రక్షసా.


రాఘవ O scion of the Raghu race, సౌమిత్రే Saumitri, రౌద్రేణ by the fierce, రక్షసా demon, హతమ్ killed, ఇమమ్ this, పతగలోకస్య నాథమ్ lord of the world of birds, చితామ్ funeral pyre, ఆరోప్య placing, ధక్ష్యామి I will cremate with honour.

O scion of the Raghus ! I will place the body of the lord of the world of birds, killed by the fierce demon, on the funeral pyre and crimate him with honour.
యా గతిర్యజ్ఞశీలానామాహితాగ్నేశ్చ యా గతిః৷৷3.68.29৷৷

అపరావర్తినాం యా చ యా చ భూమిప్రదాయినామ్.

మయా త్వం సమనుజ్ఞాతో గచ్ఛ లోకాననుత్తమాన్৷৷3.68.30৷৷

గృధ్రరాజ మహాసత్త్వ సంస్కృతశ్చ మయా వ్రజ.


మహాసత్త్వ very strong, గృధ్రరాజ king of the birds, మయా by me, సమనుజ్ఞాతః permitted, త్వమ్ you, యజ్ఞశీలానామ of those who perform sacrifices, యా such, గతిః resort, ఆహితాగ్నేశ్చ for him who kindles sacrificial fires, యా గతిః attainment, అపరావర్తినామ్ of those who beat no retreat (from battle), యా చ and such state, భూమిప్రదాయినామ్ for those who offer land in charity, యా చ that state, గచ్ఛ go, మయా by me, సంస్కృతః చ purified, అనుత్తమాన్ best of, లోకాన్ worlds, వ్రజ depart.

O mighty lord of the birds ! by my grace attain the state of those who perform sacrifices, who kindle and maintain sacrificial fires, who beat no retreat from the battlefield and who offer land in charity. Purified by my offering of fire, you may depart for the best of the worlds.
ఏవముక్త్వా చితాం దీప్తామారోప్య పతగేశ్వరమ్৷৷3.68.31৷৷

దదాహ రామో ధర్మాత్మా స్వబన్ధుమివ దుఃఖితః.


ధర్మాత్మా righteous, రామః Rama, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్త్వా having said, పతగేశ్వరమ్ lord of birds, చితామ్ on the pyre, ఆరోప్య having laid, దుఃఖితః sorrowful, స్వబన్ధుమివ like his own relation, దదాహ cremated.

Thus said, righteous Rama laid him on the pyre and sadly cremated the lord of the birds as one would do to his own relative.
రామోథ సహసౌమిత్రిర్వనం గత్వా స వీర్యవాన్৷৷3.68.32৷৷

స్థూలాన్హత్వా మహారోహీననుతస్తార తం ద్విజమ్.


అథ then, వీర్యవాన్ mighty, రామః Rama, సహసౌమిత్రిః with Saumitri, వనమ్ forest, గత్వా after going, స్థూలాన్ large, మహారోహీన్ stately deer, హత్వా killed, తం ద్విజమ్ to that bird (Jatayu), అనుతస్తార spread it as offering.

Then the mighty Rama, accompanied by Saumitri, got into the forest and killed a huge
deer, brought it and spread it as an offering (to the dead Jatayu).
రోహిమాంసాని చోత్కృత్య పేశీకృత్య మహాయశాః৷৷3.68.33৷৷

శకునాయ దదౌ రామో రమ్యే హరితశాద్వలే.


మహాయశాః famed, రామః Rama, రోహిమాంసాని flesh of the deer, ఉత్కృత్య cutting to pieces, పేశీకృత్య making into balls, రమ్యే in a lovely, హరితశాద్వలే green, grassy land, శకునాయ the bird Jatayu, దదౌ offered.

Tearing the flesh of the deer to pieces and making them into balls, the celebrated Rama laid it on a lovely, green grassy land as offering to the bird.
యత్తత్ప్రేతస్య మర్త్యస్య కథయన్తి ద్విజాతయః৷৷3.68.34৷৷

తత్స్వర్గగమనం తస్య పిత్ర్యం రామో జజాప హ.


తత్ that, యత్ whatever, ద్విజాతయః brahmins, ప్రేతస్య for the dead, మర్త్యస్య for a mortal, స్వర్గగమనమ్ for ascending to heaven, కథయన్తి they utter, తత్ all that, పిత్ర్యమ్ pertaining to father, తస్య that, జజాప muttered.

Rama muttered the mantras recommended by brahmins for dead mortals as one would do for his father, to help him ascend to heaven.
తతో గోదావరీం గత్వా నదీం నరవరాత్మజౌ৷৷3.68.35৷৷

ఉదకం చక్రతుస్తస్మై గృధ్రరాజాయ తావుభౌ.


తతః then, ఉభౌ తౌ they both, నరవరాత్మజౌ two princes, గోదావరీం నదీమ్ to river Godavari, గత్వా after reaching, తస్మై for him, గృద్రరాజాయ for the vulture-king, ఉదకమ్ libations, చక్రతుః offered.

Then both the princes went down to river Godavari and offered libations for the king of vultures.
శాస్త్రదృష్టేన విధినా జలే గృధ్రాయ రాఘవౌ৷৷3.68.36৷৷

స్నాత్వా తౌ గృధ్రరాజాయ ఉదకం చక్రతుస్తదా.


తదా thereafter, (తౌ) రాఘవౌ both scions of the Raghu dynasty, శాస్త్రదృష్టేన as ordained in scriptures, విధినా duly, గృధ్రాయ for the vulture, జలే in water, స్నాత్వా bathing, గృధ్రరాజాయ to the king of vultures, ఉదకమ్ water, చక్రతుః offered.

Thereafter both the scions of the Raghu dynasty bathed in water, offered libations for the king of vultures as ordained in the scriptures.
స గృధ్రరాజః కృతవాన్యశస్కరం సుదుష్కరం కర్మ రణే నిపాతితః.

మహర్షికల్పేన చ సంస్కృతస్తదా జగామ పుణ్యాం గతిమాత్మనశ్శుభామ్৷৷3.68.37৷৷


రణే in battle, సుదుష్కరమ్ very difficult feat, యశస్కరమ్ glorious, కర్మ deed, కృతవాన్ done, నిపాతితః was made to fall, సః గృధ్రరాజః that lord of the vultures, తదా then, మహర్షికల్పేన following the prescription of sages, సంస్కృతః sanctified, పుణ్యామ్ holy, శుభామ్ auspicious, ఆత్మనః his, గతిమ్ state, జగామ reached.

The king of vultures had performed a very difficult and glorious feat by laying down his life fighting. Sanctified by Rama's offering as laid down in scriptures by the seers, he attained a holy, auspicious and divine state of the self.
కృతోదకౌ తావపి పక్షిసత్తమే స్థిరాం చ బుద్ధిం ప్రణిధాయ జగ్మతుః.

ప్రవేశ్య సీతాధిగమే తతో మనో వనం సురేన్ద్రవివ విష్ణువాసవౌ৷৷3.68.38৷৷
