[Rama and Lakshmana proceed to search Sita -- Lakshmana punishes Ayomukhi -- Kabandha seizes Rama and Lakshmana -- Rama's lamentations at the calamity -- Lakshmana gets unnerved]

kṛtvaivamudakaṅ tasmai prasthitau rāmalakṣmaṇau.

avēkṣantau vanē sītāṅ paścimāṅ jagmaturdiśam৷৷3.69.1৷৷


ēvam thus, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, tasmai for him, udakaṅ kṛtvā after offering libation, prasthitau both started, paścimām westward, diśam direction, vanē in the forest, sītām Sita, avēkṣantau while both searching and looking, jagmatuḥ went .

Rama and Lakshmana offered libations (for Jatayu) and went westward, looking for Sita in the forest.
tau diśaṅ dakṣiṇāṅ gatvā śaracāpāsidhāriṇau.

aviprahatamaikṣvākau panthānaṅ pratipēdatuḥ৷৷3.69.2৷৷


śaracāpāsidhāriṇau wielding bows, arrows and swords, tau both, aikṣvākau two princes of the Ikshvaku race, (tām that), dakṣiṇām southward, diśam direction, gatvā went, aviprahatam untrodden, panthānam path, pratipēdatuḥ reached.

Wielding bow, arrows and sword, both the princes of the Ikshvaku race went southward and entered an untrodden (densely wooded) tract.
gulmairvṛkṣaiśca bahubhirlatābhiśca pravēṣṭitam.

āvṛtaṅ sarvatō durgaṅ gahanaṅ ghōradarśanam৷৷3.69.3৷৷


bahubhiḥ by many, gulmaiḥ by shrubs, vṛkṣaiśca and by trees, latābhiśca and by creepers, pravēṣṭitam overgrown, sarvataḥ all over, āvṛtam covered, durgam difficult to reach, gahanam impenetrable,
ghōradarśanam appearing ferocious

It was a dense, impenetrable and dreadful forest covered with shrubs, trees and creepers spread all over.
vyatikramya tu vēgēna vyālasiṅhaniṣēvitam.

subhīmaṅ tanmahāraṇyaṅ vyatiyātau mahābalau৷৷3.69.4৷৷


mahābalau two mighty princes, vyālasiṅhaniṣēvitam where serperts and lions dwell, subhīmam very fierceful, tat that, mahāraṇyam great forest, vēgēna swiftly, vyatikramya after forging through, vyatiyātau both crossed over.

The two mighty heroes swiftly forged through the great forest, which was an abode of serpents and lions.
tataḥ paraṅ janasthānātatrikrōśaṅ gamya rāghavau.

krauñcāraṇyaṅ viviśaturgahanaṅ tau mahaujasau৷৷3.69.5৷৷


tataḥ then, param later, mahaujasau mighty, tau they both, rāghavau two scions of the Raghus, janasthānāt from Janasthana, trikrōśam three krosas distance (one krosa = 2 miles), gamya after going, gahanam impassable, krauñcāraṇyam krauncha-forest, viviśatuḥ entered.

Both the mighty princes of the Raghu dynasty covered a distance of three krosas from Janasthana and entered the impassable krauncha-forest.
nānāmēghaghanaprakhyaṅ prahṛṣṭamiva sarvataḥ.

nānāpakṣigaṇairyuktaṅ nānāvyālamṛgairyutam৷৷3.69.6৷৷

didṛkṣamāṇau vaidēhīṅ tadvanaṅ tau vicikyatuḥ.

tatra tatrāvatiṣṭhantau sītāharaṇakarśitau৷৷3.69.7৷৷


sītāharaṇakarśitau both tormented by the abduction of Sita, tau they two, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, didṛkṣamāṇau eager to see, tatra there, avatiṣṭhantau both stopping a while, nānāmēghaghanaprakhyam looking like dense clouds, sarvataḥ all over, prahṛṣṭamiva as if it was over joyed, nānāpakṣigaṇaiḥ with different birds, yuktam filled, nānāvyālamṛgaiḥ by various snakes and animals, yutam filled with, tat that, vanam forest, vicikyatuḥ they both searched.

Tormented due to abduction of Sita, the two princes anxious to see her searched all over the dense forest stopping here and there on the way. The thick forest looked like a conglomeration of big clouds. It was filled with different kinds of birds, snakes and animals.
tataḥ pūrvēṇa tau gatvā trikrōśaṅ bhrātarau tadā.

krauñcāraṇyamatikramya mataṅgāśramamantarā৷৷3.69.8৷৷

dṛṣṭvā tu tadvanaṅ ghōraṅ bahubhīmamṛgadvijam.

nanāsattvasamākīrṇaṅ sarvaṅ gahanapādapam৷৷3.69.9৷৷

dadṛśātē tu tau tatra darīṅ daśarathātmajau.

pātālasamagambhīrāṅ tamasā nityasaṅvṛtām৷৷3.69.10৷৷


tadā then, bhrātarau the two brothers, tau daśarathātmajau the two sons of Dasaratha, tataḥ then, pūrvēṇa by eastern direction, trikrōśam three krosas distance, gatvā went, krauñcāraṇyam krauncha-forest, atikramya crossed, mataṅgāśramam antarā near the hermitage of sage Matanga, ghōram terrific, bahubhīmamṛgadvijam filled with fearful beasts and birds, nānāsattvasamākīrṇam teeming with different kinds of creatures, gahanapādapam dense trees, sarvam all, tat that, vanam forest, dṛṣṭvā seeing, tatra there, (girau on the hill), pātālasamagambhīrām deep like the nether world, tamasā darkness, nityasaṅvṛtām always filled with, darīm cave, dadṛśātē both saw.

Then both the sons of Dasaratha, went further east, crossed the krauncha-forest after three krosas. They saw a dreadful forest which was full of fierce animals and birds near the hermitage of sage Matanga. It was densely covered with trees. They saw there a cave perpetually enveloped in darkness which was as deep as the netherworld.
āsādya tau naravyāghrau daryāstasyāvidūrataḥ.

dadṛśātē mahārūpāṅ rākṣasīṅ vikṛtānanām৷৷3.69.11৷৷


tau both of them, naravyāghrau best among men, āsādya reached, tasyāḥ from that, daryāḥ from the cave, vidūrataḥ not very far from that place, mahārūpām a woman of huge size, vikṛtānanām a woman of disfigured face, rākṣasīm demoness, dadṛśātē both saw.

Both the princes,the best among men, reached the cave and saw a huge demoness with a disfigured face not far from the cave.
bhayadāmalpasattvānāṅ bībhatsāṅ raudradarśanām.

lambōdarīṅ tīkṣṇadaṅṣṭrāṅ karālīṅ paruṣatvacam৷৷3.69.12৷৷

bhakṣayantīṅ mṛgānbhīmānvikaṭāṅ muktamūrdhajām.

praikṣētāṅ tau tatastatra bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau৷৷3.69.13৷৷


tataḥ then, bhrātarau both brothers, tau rāmalakṣmaṇau both Rama and Lakshmana, alpasattvānām for the timid, bhayadām one creating fear, bībhatsām a woman of uncouth appearance, raudradarśanām a woman of terrific appearance, lambōdarīm a woman of big stomach, tīkṣṇadaṅṣṭrām a woman with sharp teeth, karālīm terrific woman, bhīmān fearful, mṛgān animals, bhakṣayantīm was eating, vikaṭām who had huge curved skins, muktamūrdhajām a woman with hair spread out, tatra there, praikṣētām saw.

Then the two brothers saw a fearful demoness who could strike terror in the mind of the timid, an uncouth figure with huge curved skins, with a big stomach, dishevelled hair, sharp and long teeth, devouring wild animals.
sā samāsādya tau vīrau vrajantaṅ bhrāturagrataḥ.

ēhi raṅsyāvahētyuktvā samālambata lakṣmaṇam৷৷3.69.14৷৷


sā she, vīrau both heroes, tau both, samāsādya coming close, ēhi come on, raṅsyāvahē we will both sport and enjoy sex, iti thus, uktvā said, bhrātuḥ brother's, agrataḥ in front of, vrajantam
moving, lakṣmaṇam Lakshmana, samālambata held.

She came close to them, held Lakshmana who was walking ahead of his brother and said Come, let us enjoy.
uvāca cainaṅ vacanaṅ saumitrimupagūhya sā.

ahaṅ tvayōmukhī nāma labdhā tē tvamasi priyaḥ৷৷3.69.15৷৷

nātha parvatakūṭēṣu nadīnāṅ pulinēṣu ca.

āyuśśēṣamimaṅ vīra tvaṅ mayā saha raṅsyasē৷৷3.69.16৷৷


sā she, saumitrim to Saumitri, upaguhya took hold of, ēnam him, vacanam words, uvāca ca spoke, ahaṅ tu I am, ayōmukhī nāma Ayomukhi by name, tē to you, labdhā obtained by you, tvam him, priyaḥ dear, vīra hero, nātha lord, imam this, āyuḥśēṣam rest of your life, tvam you, mayā saha with me, parvatakūṭēṣu on the lofty hills, nadīnām pulinēṣu ca on the river banks, raṅsyasē you will enjoy.

Taking hold of Saumitri the demoness said 'I am Ayomukhi and I have been obtained by you. You got me, O hero, O lord ! For the rest of your life you will sport with me on the lofty hills and river banks.'
ēvamuktastu kupitaḥ khaḍgamuddhṛtya lakṣmaṇaḥ.

karṇanāsāstanaṅ tasyā nicakartārisūdanaḥ৷৷3.69.17৷৷


ēvam thus, uktaḥ having been told, arisūdanaḥ subduer of enemies, lakṣmaṇaḥ Lakshmana, kupitaḥ became angry, khaḍgam sword, uddhṛtya after lifting, tasyāḥ her, karṇanāsāstanam ears, nose and breasts, cakarta cut off.

Thus addressed, Lakshmana, subduer of enemies, became angry, took out the sword and cut off her ears, nose and breasts.
karṇanāsē nikṛttē tu visvaraṅ sā vinadya ca.

yathāgataṅ pradudrāva rākṣasī bhīmadarśanā৷৷3.69.18৷৷


bhīmadarśanā a woman of frightening appearance, sā rākṣasī that demoness, karṇanāsē ears and nose, nikṛttē when they were cut, visvaram with cracked voice, vinadya after shouting, yathāgatam in the same way as she came, pradudrāva ran away.

When the ears and nose of the frightening demoness were cut off she shouted in a fierce tone and ran away in the direction she had come from.
tasyāṅ gatāyāṅ gahanaṅ vrajantau vanamōjasā.

āsēdaturamitraghnau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau৷৷3.69.19৷৷


tasyām when she, gatāyām went away, vrajantau as both were advancing, bhrātarau two brothers, amitraghnau both being destroyers of enemies, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, ōjasā with their might, gahanam dense, vanam woods, āsēdatuḥ reached.

The destroyers of enemies, Rama and Lakshmana of great valour went through the dense forest after she ran away.
lakṣmaṇastu mahātējāssattvavān śīlavān śuciḥ.

abravītprāñjalirvākyaṅ bhrātaraṅ dīptatējasam৷৷3.69.20৷৷


mahātējāḥ of great brilliance, sattvavān a powerful one, śīlavān a man of good conduct, śuciḥ pure, lakṣmaṇastu Lakshmna too, prāñjaliḥ with folded hands, dīptatējasam glowing in splendour, bhrātaram his brother, vākyam words, abravīt said.

Lakshmana of great brilliance and power, of good conduct and pure character spoke to his highly effulgent brother with folded hands:
spandatē ca dṛḍhaṅ bāhurudvignamiva mē manaḥ.

prāyaśaścāpyaniṣṭāni nimittānyupalakṣayē৷৷3.69.21৷৷


mē my, bāhuḥ arm, dṛḍham strongly, spandatē is throbbing, manaḥ mind, udvignamiva is as if agitated, prāyaśaḥ probably, aniṣṭāni undesirable ones, nimittāni omens, upalakṣayē I am observing.

My arm is throbbing heavily. My mind is agitated. The omens I see foretell some undesirable events.
tasmātsajjībhavārya tvaṅ kuruṣva vacanaṅ hitam.

mamaiva hi nimittāni sadyaśśaṅsanti sambhramam৷৷3.69.22৷৷


ārya O noble one, tasmāt therefore, tvam you, sajjībhava be ready, hitam good, vacanam words, kuruṣva you may act upon, nimittāni omens, sadyaḥ presently, sambhramam fear, mama I am, śaṅsanti iva hi as though they are forecasting.

O noble brother! be alert. Heed my words of good advice. The bad omens I see presage perils.
ēṣa vañculakō nāma pakṣī paramadāruṇaḥ.

āvayōrvijayaṅ yuddhē śaṅsanniva vinardati৷৷3.69.23৷৷


paramadāruṇaḥ extremely dreadful, vañculakō nāma by name Vanchulaka, ēṣaḥ pakṣī this bird, yuddhē in strife, āvayōḥ both of us, vijayam triumph, śaṅsanniva as though telling, vinardati cries loudly.

This vanchulaka bird's loud and dreadful screams suggest our triumph in war.
tayōranvēṣatōrēvaṅ sarvaṅ tadvanamōjasā.

saṅjajñē vipulaḥ śabdō prabhañjanniva tadvanam৷৷3.69.24৷৷


tayōḥ both, ēvam in that manner, ōjasā with strength, sarvam all over, tat vanam that forest, anvēṣatōḥ while both were searching, tat vanam that forest, prabhañjanniva as if shattering, vipulaḥ very big, śabdaḥ sound, saṅjajñē broke out.

As both the brothers with great prowess were searching for Sita all over, a huge
sound exploded as if shattering the forest.
saṅvēṣṭitamivātyarthaṅ gaganaṅ mātariśvanā.

vanasya tasya śabdō.bhūddivamāpūrayanniva৷৷3.69.25৷৷


gaganam sky, atyartham very much, mātariśvanā by fierce wind, saṅvēṣṭitamiva was as if covered, tasya of that, vanasya of the forest, śabdaḥ sound, divam sky, āpūrayanniva was filling, abhūt rose.

It appeared as though a fierce wind rose from the forest and filled the sky.
taṅ śabdaṅ kāṅkṣamāṇastu rāmaḥ kakṣē sahānujaḥ.

dadarśa sumahākāyaṅ rākṣasaṅ vipulōdaram৷৷3.69.26৷৷


taṅ śabdam that sound, kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ a man looking for it, sahānujaḥ along with his brother, rāmaḥ Rama, kakṣē on the side, sumahākāyam one with a huge body, vipulōdaram and a big belly, rākṣasam demon, dadarśa saw.

While looking for the sound, Rama with his brother saw a demon with a huge body and a big belly.
āsēdatustatastatra tāvubhau pramukhē sthitam.

vivṛddhamaśirōgrīvaṅ kabandhamudarē mukham৷৷3.69.27৷৷


tataḥ then, tau ubhau both of them, tatra there, pramukhē in front, sthitam stood, vivṛddham very well grown, aśirōgrīvam without head and neck, udarē mukham with his face in the stomach, kabandham trunk, āsēdatuḥ reached.

Then both the brothers saw a very tall figure with a trunk that stood facing them. He had neither neck nor head. His face was in the stomach.
rōmabhirnicitaistīkṣṇairmahāgirimivōchritam.

nīlamēghanibhaṅ raudraṅ mēghastanitanisvanam৷৷3.69.28৷৷


nicitaiḥ by those spread all over the body, tīkṣṇaiḥ with sharp bristles, rōmabhiḥ hair, ucchricatam mammoth figure, mahāgirimiva like a big mountain, nīlamēghanibham resembling a dark cloud, raudram a fierce one, mēghastanitanisvanam voice like the thunder of the cloud.

With sharp bristled hair all over the body, he was a mammoth figure who looked like a mountain resembling a dark cloud with his voice like the thunder.
agnijvālānikāśēna lalāṭasthēna dīpyatā.

mahāpakṣmēṇa piṅgēna vipulēnāyatēna ca৷৷3.69.29৷৷

ēkēnōrasi ghōrēṇa nayanēnāśudarśinā.

mahādaṅṣṭrōpapannaṅ tallēlihānaṅ mahāmukham৷৷3.69.30৷৷


agnijvālānikāśēna resembling the flaming fire, lalāṭasthēna on the forehead, dīpyatā by the glowing, mahāpakṣmēṇa with huge eyelashes, piṅgēna with reddish-brown colour, vipulēna huge, āyatēna ca stretched , āśudarśinā with instant vision, ghōrēṇa terrific one, urasi on the chest, ēkēna one, nayanēna eye, mahādaṅṣṭrōpapannam having massive fangs, lēlihānam while licking his lips, mahāmukham his huge mouth, tam him

He had a single eye that was reddish-brown in colour resembling flaming fire. It was fixed in the chest. His eyelashes glowed. He had instant vision with massive fangs in his huge mouth. He was licking his lips.
bhakṣayantaṅ mahāghōrānṛkṣasiṅhamṛgadvipān.

ghōrau bhujau vikurvāṇamubhau yōjanamāyatau৷৷3.69.31৷৷


mahāghōrān terrific, ṛkṣasiṅhamṛgadvipān bears, lions, deer and elephants, bhakṣayantam while eating, yōjanam a Yojana (eight miles), āyatau long ones, ghōrau both frightening, ubhau both, bhūjau two arms, vikurvāṇam as he was stretching.

The terrific demon kept eating bears, lions, deer and elephants, catching with both his arms stretching up to one yojana.
karābhyāṅ vividhāngṛhyaṛkṣānpakṣigaṇānmṛgān.

ākarṣantaṅ vikarṣantamanēkānmṛgayūthapān৷৷3.69.32৷৷

sthitamāvṛtya panthānaṅ tayōrbhrātrōḥ prapannayōḥ.


ṛkṣān bears, vividhān various, pakṣigaṇān birds, mṛgān deer, anēkān many, mṛgayūthapān herds of deer, karābhyām by both his hands, gṛhya taking, ākarṣantam seizing, vikarṣantam throwing away, prapannayōḥ reached there, tayōḥ both the, bhrātrōḥ of brothers, panthānam path, āvṛtya after blocking, sthitam stood.

He stood rooted there, catching bears, flocks of birds and deer with both his hands stretching up to one yojana, pulling and pushing them. (Now) he obstructed the path of the two brothers.
atha tau samabhikramya krōśamātrē dadarśatuḥ৷৷3.69.33৷৷

mahāntaṅ dāruṇaṅ bhīmaṅ kabandhaṅ bhujasaṅvṛm.

kabandhamiva saṅsthānādatighōrapradarśanam৷৷3.69.34৷৷


atha then, tau both, samabhikramya after covering, krōśamātrē at a distance of one krosa (2 miles), mahāntam mighty, dāruṇam cruel, bhīmam frightening, bhujasaṅvṛtam his arms encircling, saṅsthānāt from his form, kabandhamiva like a trunk, ghōrapradarśanam putting is a monstrous appearance, kabandham one demon, Kabandha, dadarśatuḥ they both saw.

Then the brothers after covering one krosa (2 miles) saw a cruel, fierce, mighty monster named Kabandha looking like a trunk. He had a dreadful appearance and his arms encircled the area.
sa mahābāhuratyarthaṅ prasārya vipulau bhujau.

jagrāha sahitāvēva rāghavau pīḍayanbalāt৷৷3.69.35৷৷


mahābāhuḥ long armed one, saḥ he, vipulau very big, bhujau both arms, atyartham greatly, prasārya spreading, sahitāvēva rāghavau brothers together, balāt with strength, pīḍayan pressing, jagrāha held.

The long-armed demon spread his hands and caught hold of Rama and Lakshmana together by pressing them with all his force.
khaḍginau dṛḍhadhanvānau tigmatējōvapurdharau.

bhrātarau vivaśaṅ prāptau kṛṣyamāṇau mahābalau৷৷3.69.36৷৷


khaḍginau wielders of swords, dṛḍhadhanvānau with strong bows, tigmatējōvapurdharau with bodies of fiery splendour, mahābalau mighty, bhrātarau both brothers, kṛṣyamāṇau both being seized, vivaśam prāptau both became helpless.

The two mighty brothers who wielded swords and strong bows and whose bodies were of fiery splendour became helpless, seized by the hands of Kabandha.
tatra dhairyēṇa śūrastu rāghavō naiva vivyathē.

bālyādanāśrayatvācca lakṣmaṇastvativivyathē৷৷3.69.37৷৷

uvāca sa viṣaṇṇassanrāghavaṅ rāghavānujaḥ.


tatra there, śūraḥ heroic, rāghavaḥ Raghava, dhairyēṇa with courage, naiva vivyathē not pained, lakṣmaṇastu but Lakshmana, bālyāt being younger, ānāśrayatvācca not having much courage, ativivyathē very worried, saḥ that, rāghavānujaḥ brother of Rama, viṣaṇṇassan depressed, rāghavam to Rama, uvāca said,

Of the two heroes, Rama being courageous was not worried but Lakshmana being younger and not having as much courage, was very much concerned and depressed. He said to Rama:
paśya māṅ vīra vivaśaṅ rākṣasasya vaśaṅ gatam৷৷3.69.38৷৷

mayaikēna viniryuktaḥ parimuñcasva rāghava.


vīra heroic Rama, vivaśam helpless, rākṣasasya vaśam under the control of the demon, gatam gone, mām me, paśya see, rāghava Rama, ēkēna by one alone, mayā by me, viniryuktaḥ offering me, parimuñcasva set yourself free.

O heroic Rama! see how helpless I am under the control of the demon. Set yourself free, leaving me alone and using me as an offering.
māṅ hi bhūtabaliṅ datvā palāyasva yathāsukham৷৷3.69.39৷৷

adhigantāsi vaidēhīmacirēṇēti mē matiḥ.


mām me, bhūtabalim as an offering, datvā after giving, yathāsukham happily, palāyasva you may run away, vaidēhīm Vaidehi, acirēṇa soon, adhigantāsi will attain her, iti this is, mē my, matiḥ opinion.

Giving me to this monstor as an offering, you may run away happily. I think you will soon obtain Vaidehi.
pratilabhya ca kākutstha pitṛpaitāmahīṅ mahīm৷৷3.69.40৷৷

tatra māṅ rāma rājyasthassmartumarhasi sarvadā.


kākutthsa O scion of Kakutstha dynasty, rāma Rama, pitṛpaitāmahīm heriditary reign, mahīm land, pratilabhya ca on getting, tatra there, rājyasthaḥ as one ruling the country, sarvadā always, mām me, smartum remember, arhasi should.

O scion of the Kakutstha dynasty, on getting the hereditary kingdom and ruling over it you should always remember me.
lakṣmaṇēnaivamuktastu rāmassaumitrimabravīt৷৷3.69.41৷৷

mā sma trāsaṅ kṛthā vīra na hi tvādṛgviṣīdati.


lakṣmaṇēna by Lakshmana, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ having been said, rāmaḥ Rama, saumitrim to Soumitri, abravīt said, vīra heroic Lakshmana, trāsam fear, mā sma kṛthāḥ do not entertain, tvādṛk a hero like you, na viṣīdati hi should not get desperate.

O valiant Lakshmana, a hero like you should not get desparate. said Rama to Saumitri when he was thus entreated by Lakshmana.
ētasminnantarē krūrō bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau৷৷3.69.42৷৷

papraccha ghananirghōṣaḥ kabandhō dānavōttamaḥ.


ētasmin antarē in the meanwhile, krūraḥ cruel one, dānavōttamaḥ foremost of the demons, kabandhaḥ Kabandha, ghananirghōṣaḥ rumbling like thunder, bhrātarau to the brothers, rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, papraccha questioned.

In the meanwhile the foremost of the demons, Kabandha, rumbling like thunder questioned the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana:
kau yuvāṅ vṛṣabhaskandhau mahākhaḍgadhanurdharau৷৷3.69.43৷৷

ghōraṅ dēśamimaṅ prāptau mama bhakṣāvupasthitau.


vṛṣabhaskandhau whose shoulders are comparable to a bull, mahākhaḍgadhanurdharau both holding great sword and bow, ghōram dreadful, imaṅ dēśam this place, prāptau reached here, yuvām you both, kau who are you, mama for me, bhakṣau both, upasthitau have reached.

Who are you with bull-like shoulders, wielding big swords, bows and arrows? By coming to this place you have become my food.
vadataṅ kāryamiha vāṅ kimarthaṅ cāgatau yuvām৷৷3.69.44৷৷

imaṅ dēśamanuprāptau kṣudhārtasyēha tiṣṭhataḥ.


iha here, vām to you both, kāryam work, vadatam speak, yuvām both, kimartham for what purpose?, āgatau have come, kṣudhārtasya for the hungry, iha here, tiṣṭhataḥ while staying here, imam this, dēśam place, anuprāptau came at the right time.

For what purpose have you come? What work have you here ? You have come at the right time as my food, since I am hungry.
sabāṇacāpakhaḍgau ca tīkṣṇaśṛṅgāvivarṣabhau৷৷3.69.45৷৷

mamāsyamanusamprāptau durlabhaṅ jīvitaṅ punaḥ.


sabāṇacāpakhaḍgau holding bows and arrows and swords, tīkṣṇaśṛṅgau two sharp horns, ṛṣabhau iva like bulls, mama my, āsyam mouth, anusamprāptau you both have reached, punaḥ again, jīvitam lives, durlabham impossible.

Holding bows, arrows and swords, looking like bulls with pointed horns you have entered my mouth. It is impossible for you to live any more.
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā kabandhasya durātmanaḥ৷৷3.69.46৷৷

uvāca lakṣmaṇaṅ rāmō mukhēna pariśuṣyatā.


durātmanaḥ of the evil-minded, tasya kabandhasya that Kabandha's, tat that, vacanam word, śrutvā on hearing, rāmaḥ Rama, pariśuṣyatā by dried up, mukhēna by mouth, lakṣmaṇam to Lakshmna, abravīt said:

On hearing the words of the evil-minded Kabandha, Rama said to Lakshmana with dried up mouth:
kṛcchrāt kṛcchrataraṅ prāpya dāruṇaṅ satyavikramaḥ৷৷3.69.47৷৷

vyasanaṅ jīvitāntāya prāptamaprāpya tāṅ priyām.


satyavikrama one whose valour is truth, kṛcchrāt from one calamity, kṛcchrataram to a greater calamity, prāpya having reached, priyām beloved, tām her, aprāpya having lost, jīvitāntāya for
ending life, dāruṇam unbearable, vyasanam crisis, prāptam experienced.

O Lakshmana, your valour is truth.We have gone through from one calamity to a greater one without finding the beloved Sita. Now we have landed into a terrible crisis which will put an end to our own life.
kālasya sumahadvīryaṅ sarvabhūtēṣu lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.69.48৷৷

tvāṅ ca māṅ ca naravyāghra vyasanaiḥ paśya mōhitau.


naravyāghra tiger among men, lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, sarvabhūtēṣu for all beings, kālasya of the time, vīryam power, sumahat great, vyasanaiḥ by calamity, mōhitau afflicted, tvāṅ ca yourself, māṅ me, ca and, paśya see.

O tiger among men! see how powerful the might of time is for all beings! Just see yourself and myself afflicted wth this great calamity.
nātibhārōsti kālasya sarvabhūtēṣu lakṣmaṇa৷৷3.69.49৷৷

śūrāśca balavantaśca kṛtāstrāśca raṇājirē.

kālābhipannāssīdanti yathā vālukasētavaḥ৷৷3.69.50৷৷


lakṣmaṇa Lakshmana, kālasya of the time, sarvabhūtēṣu over all creatures, atibhāraḥ great weight, nāsti not there, śūrāśca brave people, balavantaśca or strong men, raṇājirē kṛtāstrāśca those who know the use of arms in the war, kālābhipannāḥ by the force of time, vālukasētavaḥ yathā like barriers built with sand, sīdatanti make way.

O Lakshmana look at the power of time over all creatures! There is nothing too heavy for time. Even those who know the use of arms in war, or are brave or strong enough, cannot withstand the force of time like the barriers built with sand.
iti bruvāṇō dṛḍhasatyavikramō mahāyaśā dāśarathiḥ pratāpavān.

avēkṣya saumitrimudagrapauruṣaṅ sthirāṅ tadā svāṅ matimātmanā.karōt৷৷3.69.51৷৷


dṛḍhasatyavikramaḥ Firm in the strength of truth, mahāyaśāḥ illustrious, pratāpavān powerful, dāśarathiḥ Dasaratha's son (Rama), iti thus, bruvāṇaḥ spoke, udagrapauruṣam of mighty manliness, saumitrim Saumitri, avēkṣya on seeing, tadā then, svām his own, sthirām determined, matim mind, ātmanā himself, akarōt fixed.

Firm in the strength of truth, famous and powerful Rama, son of Dasaratha, determined to act with a steadfast mind, spoke to Lakshmana of mighty manliness on seeing him.
ityārṣa śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē ēkōnasaptatitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyninth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
