Rama, the scorcher of enemies, along with his brother Lakshmana and Sita and the sages went to Sutikshna's hermitage.

After covering a long distance and crossing the river (Ganga) with plenty of water, Rama saw a huge mountain looking like a lofty cloud.

Rama and Lakshmana, the best of the Ikshvaku family, accompanied by Sita entered the dense forest filled with trees all over.

ഘോരമ് dreadful, ബഹുപുഷ്പഫലദ്രുമമ് filled with trees bearing different kinds of flowers and fruits, വനമ് forest, പ്രവിഷ്ടഃ entered, ഏകാന്തേ at a lonely place, ചീരമാലാപരിഷ്കൃതമ് line of bark robes hanging, ആശ്രമമ് hermitage, ദദര്ശ witnessed.
Entering that dreadful forest, they saw trees full of flowers and fruits, and a hermitage in a lonely place with lines of bark robes hanging.

തത്ര there (at the hermitage), രാമഃ Rama, മലപങ്കജഠാധരമ് with soiled, matted hair, ആസീനമ് seated, തപോവൃദ്ധമ് grown old with penance, താപസമ് ascetic, സുതീക്ഷ്ണമ് Sutikshna, വിധിവത് as per tradition, അഭാഷത spoke.
There at the hermitage was Sutikshna, an ascetic grown old with (long) penance, wearing soiled, matted locks and seated. Rama (first) addressed him as per custom.
രാമോഹമസ്മി ഭഗവന്ഭവന്തം ദ്രഷ്ടുമാഗതഃ.

ഭഗവന് O revered one, അഹമ് am, രാമഃ അസ്മി I am Rama, ഭവന്തമ് you, ദ്രഷ്ടുമ് to see, ആഗതഃ I came, ത്വം you, ധര്മജ്ഞ knower of dharma, സത്യവിക്രമ having truth as your prowess, മഹര്ഷേ great sage, മാ me, അഭിവദ speak.
O venerable one, I am Rama.You are a great sage, armed with truth as your prowess and a knower of dharma. I have come to see you. Could you speak to me?
സ നിരീക്ഷ്യ തതോ ധീരോ രാമം ധര്മഭൃതാം വരമ്.

Thereafter the composed Sutikshna, looked at Rama, the best among righteous men, and embracing him with both his arms said:

O Rama, the best among the Raghavas and among the upholders of truth, you are welcome. With your presence this hermitage will have a protector now.
പ്രതീക്ഷമാണസ്ത്വാമേവ നാരോഹേഹം മഹായശഃ.
ദേവലോകമിതോ വീര ദേഹം ത്യക്ത്വാ മഹീതലേ.

മഹായശഃ O illustrious one, വീര heroic one, അഹമ് I, ത്വാമേവ you only, പ്രതീക്ഷ്മാണഃ waiting for you, മഹീതലേ on earth, ദേഹമ് body, ത്യക്ത്വാ giving up, ഇതഃ from here, ദേവലോകമ് world of the gods, നാരോഹേ I do not ascend, രാജ്യഭ്രഷ്ടഃ renouncing the kingdom, ചിത്രകൂടമ് Chitrakuta, ഉപാദായ after taking, അസി you are, മേ I, ശ്രുതഃ heard.
O renowned hero, I had heard that you have come to Chitrakuta, renouncing your
kingdom. I have been waiting so long to see you here. Unable to give up this body, I did not even leave the earth for heaven, the world of the gods.
ഇഹോപയാതഃ കാകുത്ഥ്സ! ദേവരാജശ്ശതക്രതുഃ৷৷3.7.10৷৷
ഉപാഗമ്യ ച മേ ദേവോ മഹാദേവസ്സുരേശ്വരഃ.
സര്വാന് ലോകാഞ്ജിതാനാഹ മമ പുണ്യേന കര്മണാ৷৷3.7.11৷৷
ഉപാഗമ്യ ച മേ ദേവോ മഹാദേവസ്സുരേശ്വരഃ.

കാകുത്ഥ്സ! scion of the Kakutstha family, ശതക്രതുഃ Indra, ദേവരാജഃ king of the gods, ഇഹ here, ഉപയാതഃ came to me, മഹാദേവഃ chief of the gods, സുരേശ്വരഃ Indra, ദേവഃ deity, ഉപാഗമ്യ after he came here, മമ my, പുണ്യേന കര്മണാ by meritorious act, സര്വാന് all, ലോകാന് worlds, ജിതാന് won, മേ by me, ആഹ said.
O scion of the Kakutstha family, Indra, king of the gods came to me and said that by my meritorious deeds I have won all the worlds.
തേഷു ദേവര്ഷിജുഷ്ടേഷു ജിതേഷു തപസാ മയാ.
മത്പ്രസാദാത്സഭാര്യസ്ത്വം വിഹരസ്വ സലക്ഷ്മണഃ৷৷3.7.12৷৷

മയാ by me, ജിതേഷു which have been won, ദേവര്ഷിജുഷ്ടേഷു worlds served by divine sages like Narada, തേഷു those, സഭാര്യഃ with your wife, സലക്ഷ്മണഃ and with Lakshmana, ത്വമ് you, മത്പ്രസാദാത് by my grace, വിഹരസ്വ move about.
Along with your wife and Lakshmana you may roam by my grace the worlds won by me and served by divine sages like devarsi Narada.
തമുഗ്രതപസായുക്തം മഹര്ഷിം സത്യവാദിനമ്.
പ്രത്യുവാചാത്മവാന്രാമോ ബ്രഹ്മാണമിവ കാശ്യപഃ৷৷3.7.13৷৷
പ്രത്യുവാചാത്മവാന്രാമോ ബ്രഹ്മാണമിവ കാശ്യപഃ৷৷3.7.13৷৷
ആത്മവാന് self-possessed, രാമഃ Rama, ഉഗ്രതപസായുക്തം doing severe penance, സത്യവാദിനമ് to the truthful തം മഹര്ഷിമ് to that great sage, കാശ്യപഃ Kasyapa, ബ്രഹ്മാണമിവ as he would speak to Brahma, പ്രത്യുവാച thus replied.
Self-possessed Rama replied to the truthful ascetic who had performed intense penance. Just as Kasyapa would address Lord Brahma:
അഹമേവാഹരിഷ്യാമി സര്വാന് ലോകാന്മഹാമുനേ.
ആവാസം ത്വഹമിച്ഛാമി പ്രദിഷ്ടമിഹ കാനനേ৷৷3.7.14৷৷
ആവാസം ത്വഹമിച്ഛാമി പ്രദിഷ്ടമിഹ കാനനേ৷৷3.7.14৷৷
മഹാമുനേ O great sage, അഹമേവ I alone, സര്വാന് all, ലോകാന് worlds, ആഹരിഷ്യാമി I will win, തു but, അഹമ് I, ഇഹ here, കാനനേ in the forest, പ്രദിഷ്ടമ് directed, ആവാസമ് residence, ഇച്ഛാമി intend to.
O great sage! I will win all the worlds myself. I (only) want to live in this forest. Allow me.
ഭവാന്സര്വത്ര കുശലസ്സര്വഭൂതഹിതേ രതഃ.
ആഖ്യാതശ്ശരഭങ്ഗേണ ഗൌതമേന മഹാത്മനാ৷৷3.7.15৷৷
ആഖ്യാതശ്ശരഭങ്ഗേണ ഗൌതമേന മഹാത്മനാ৷৷3.7.15৷৷
ഭവാന് you, സര്വത്ര all, കുശലഃ are keeping well, സര്വഭൂതഹിതേ in the welfare of all living beings, രതഃ ever engaged ഗൌതമേന of Gautama, മഹാത്മനാ by a great sage, ശരഭങ്ഗേണ by Sarabhanga, ആഖ്യാതഃ told.
You are ever engaged in the welfare of all beings. I have heard this from the great sage Sarabhanga of Gautama's clan.
ഏവമുക്തസ്തു രാമേണ മഹര്ഷിര്ലോകവിശ്രുതഃ.
അബ്രവീന്മധുരം വാക്യം ഹര്ഷേണ മഹതാപ്ലുതഃ৷৷3.7.16৷৷

രാമേണ by Rama, ഏവമ് thus, ഉക്തഃ told, ലോകവിശ്രുതഃ well-known to the world, മഹര്ഷിഃ great sage, മഹതാ with great, ഹര്ഷേണ joy, പ്ലുതഃ overwhelmed, മധുരമ് sweet, വാക്യമ് words, അബ്രവീത് said.
Thus addressed by Rama, Sutikshna, the great sage, well-known to the world was highly delighted. He (then) said these sweet words:
അയമേവാശ്രമോ രാമ ഗുണവാന്രമ്യതാമിഹ.
ഋഷിസങ്ഘാനുചരിതസ്സദാ മൂലഫലൈര്യുതഃ৷৷3.7.17৷৷

രാമ O Rama, ഋഷിസങ്ഘാനുചരിതഃ where hosts of sages live, മൂലഫലൈഃ with roots and fruits, യുതഃ endowed, അയമ് this, ആശ്രമഃ ഏവ hermitage only, ഗുണവാന് is good, രമ്യതാമ് enjoy, ഇഹ here.
O Rama! this is a salubrious hermitage where hosts of sages live and which is full of roots and fruits, you may enjoy yourself here.
ഇമമാശ്രമമാഗമ്യ മൃഗസങ്ഘാ മഹായശഃ.
അഹത്വാ പ്രതിഗച്ഛന്തി ലോഭയിത്വാകുതോഭയാഃ৷৷3.7.18৷৷
അഹത്വാ പ്രതിഗച്ഛന്തി ലോഭയിത്വാകുതോഭയാഃ৷৷3.7.18৷৷
മഹായശഃ of great fame, മൃഗസങ്ഘാഃ groups of animals, ഇമമ് this, ആശ്രമമ് hermitage, ആഗമ്യ coming here, ലോഭയിത്വാ enticing the inmates, അഹത്വാ without harming, അകുതോഭയാഃ fearless, പ്രതിഗച്ഛന്തി return.
O illustrious Rama, herds of animals visit this place fearlessly, enticing the inmates and (then) go back without harming any one.
നാന്യദ്ധോഷം ഭവേദത്ര മൃഗേഭ്യോന്യത്ര വിദ്ധി വൈ.
തച്ഛൃത്വാ വചനം തസ്യ മഹര്ഷേര്ലക്ഷ്മണാഗ്രജഃ৷৷3.7.19৷৷
ഉവാച വചനം ധീരോ വികൃഷ്യ സശരം ധനുഃ.

അത്ര here, മൃഗ്യേഭ്യഃ from animals, അന്യത്ര other than that, അന്യത് other, ദോഷം demerit, ന ഭവേത് is not expected, വിദ്ധി വൈ you may know, ധീരഃ heroic man, ലക്ഷ്മണാഗ്രജഃ elder brother of Lakshmana, (Rama), തസ്യ മഹര്ഷേഃ sages, തത് these, വചനമ് words, ശ്രുത്വാ on hearing, സശരമ് with arrow, ധനുഃ bow, വികൃഷ്യ lifted, വചനമ് words, ഉവാച said.
When heroic Rama heard that there was no other problem from the wild animals except their frequent incursions, he lifted his bow with an arrow and said these words:
താനഹം സുമഹാഭാഗ മൃഗസങ്ഘാന്സമാഗതാന്৷৷3.7.20৷৷
ഹന്യാം നിശിതധാരേണ ശരേണാശനിവര്ചസാ.
ഹന്യാം നിശിതധാരേണ ശരേണാശനിവര്ചസാ.
സുമഹാഭാഗ O reverend one, സമാഗതാന് those coming here, താന് those, മൃഗസങ്ഘാന് herds of animals, നിശിതധാരേണ with sharp edge, അശനിവര്ചസാ with a thunder-like glow, ശരേണ by arrow, ഹന്യാമ് I will kill.
O reverend one, I will kill with a sharp-edged arrow, glowing like a thunderbolt, all those herds of animals who keep coming here.
ഭവാംസ്തത്രാഭിഷജ്യേത കിംസ്യാത്കൃച്ഛ്രതരം തതഃ৷৷3.7.21৷৷
ഏതസ്മിന്നാശ്രമേ വാസം ചിരം തു ന സമര്ഥയേ.
ഏതസ്മിന്നാശ്രമേ വാസം ചിരം തു ന സമര്ഥയേ.
തത്ര then, ഭവാന് you, അഭിഷജ്യേത harass, തതഃ കൃച്ഛ്രതരമ് may cause pain, കിം സ്യാത് what could be there?, ഏതസ്മിന് in this, ആശ്രമേ hermitage, ചിരമ് for a long time, വാസമ് residence, ന not, സമര്ഥയേ I foresee.
What can be more agonizing for you (than my killing animals). I (therefore) do not foresee our long stay in this hermitage.
തമേവമുക്ത്വോപരമം രാമസ്സന്ധ്യാമുപാഗമത്৷৷3.7.22৷৷
അന്വാസ്യ പശ്ചിമാം സ്നധ്യാം തത്ര വാസമകല്പയത്.

രാമഃ Rama, തമ് him, ഏവമ് in that way, ഉക്ത്വാ having said, ഉപരമമ് stopped there, സന്ധ്യാമ് to the evening twilight, ഉപാഗമത് drew to a close, പശ്ചിമാം സന്ധ്യാമ് at Sunset in the west, അന്വാസ്യ to offer (oblation), സീതയാ with Sita, ലക്ഷ്മണേന ച and Lakshmana, സുതീക്ഷണസ്യ at Sutikshna's, തത്ര then, രമ്യേ in a delightful, ആശ്രമേ hermitage, വാസമ് stay, അകല്പയത് arranged.
Rama stopped with this. And then the evening drew to a close. Offering his evening oblation, he arranged for his stay along with Sita and Lakshmana in the delightful hermitage of Sutikshna.
തതശ്ശുഭം താപസഭോജ്യമന്നം സ്വയം സുതീക്ഷ്ണഃ പുരുഷര്ഷഭാഭ്യാമ്.
താഭ്യാം സുസത്കൃത്യ ദദൌ മഹാത്മാ സന്ധ്യാനിവൃത്തൌ രജനീം മവേക്ഷ്യ৷৷3.7.24৷৷
താഭ്യാം സുസത്കൃത്യ ദദൌ മഹാത്മാ സന്ധ്യാനിവൃത്തൌ രജനീം മവേക്ഷ്യ৷৷3.7.24৷৷
തതഃ then, മഹാത്മാ the great sage, സുതീക്ഷ്ണഃ Sutikshna, സന്ധ്യാനിവൃത്തൌ evening twilight had passed, രജനീമ് night, താഭ്യാമ് to both of them, പുരുഷര്ഷഭാഭ്യാമ് to both best of men, താപസ ഭോജ്യമ് (യോഗ്യമ്) that which is fit for ascetics, അന്നമ് food, സുസത്കൃത്യ with all hospitality, സ്വയമ് himself, ദദൌ presented.
Seeing that the evening had passed and night had set in, the great sage Sutikshna with due hospitality, served those best of men, food fit for ascetics.
ഇത്യാര്ഷേ ശ്രീമദ്രാമായണേ വാല്മീകീയ ആദികാവ്യേ അരണ്യകാണ്ഡേ സപ്തമസ്സര്ഗഃ৷৷
Thus ends the seventh sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
