పరన్తపః scorcher of enemies, రామస్తు Rama, భ్రాత్రా with brother (Lakshmana), సీతయా Sita, చ and, సహితః accompanied, తైః by them, ద్విజైః సహ with the brahmin sages, సుతీక్ష్ణస్య Sutikshna's, ఆశ్రమపదమ్ site of hermitage, జగామ went.
Rama, the scorcher of enemies, along with his brother Lakshmana and Sita and the sages went to Sutikshna's hermitage.
స గత్వా దీర్ఘమధ్వానం నదీస్తీర్త్వా బహూదకాః.

సః he (Rama), దీర్ఘమ్ long, అధ్వానమ్ distance, గత్వా went, బహూదకాః with plenty of water, నదీ river, తీర్త్వా after crossing, మహామేఘమివ like a huge cloud, ఉన్నతమ్ lobty, విమలమ్ pure, శైలమ్ mountain, దదర్శ saw.
After covering a long distance and crossing the river (Ganga) with plenty of water, Rama saw a huge mountain looking like a lofty cloud.
తత స్తదిక్ష్వాకువరౌ సన్తతం వివిధైర్ద్రుమైః.
కాననం తౌ వివిశతుస్సీతయా సహ రాఘవౌ৷৷3.7.3৷৷

తతః thereafter, ఇక్ష్వాకువరౌ the best of the Ikshvakus, తౌ రాఘవౌ both brothers of the Ragha family (Rama and Lakshmana), సీతయా సహ with Sita, వివిధైః with many, ద్రుమైః by trees, సన్తతమ్ crowded all over, కాననమ్ forest, వివిశతుః both entered.
Rama and Lakshmana, the best of the Ikshvaku family, accompanied by Sita entered the dense forest filled with trees all over.
ప్రవిష్టస్తు వనం ఘోరం బహుపుష్పఫలద్రుమమ్.
దదర్శాశ్రమమేకాన్తే చీరమాలాపరిష్కృతమ్৷৷3.7.4৷৷

ఘోరమ్ dreadful, బహుపుష్పఫలద్రుమమ్ filled with trees bearing different kinds of flowers and fruits, వనమ్ forest, ప్రవిష్టః entered, ఏకాన్తే at a lonely place, చీరమాలాపరిష్కృతమ్ line of bark robes hanging, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitage, దదర్శ witnessed.
Entering that dreadful forest, they saw trees full of flowers and fruits, and a hermitage in a lonely place with lines of bark robes hanging.
తత్ర తాపసమాసీనం మలపఙ్కజటాధరమ్.

తత్ర there (at the hermitage), రామః Rama, మలపఙ్కజఠాధరమ్ with soiled, matted hair, ఆసీనమ్ seated, తపోవృద్ధమ్ grown old with penance, తాపసమ్ ascetic, సుతీక్ష్ణమ్ Sutikshna, విధివత్ as per tradition, అభాషత spoke.
There at the hermitage was Sutikshna, an ascetic grown old with (long) penance, wearing soiled, matted locks and seated. Rama (first) addressed him as per custom.
రామోహమస్మి భగవన్భవన్తం ద్రష్టుమాగతః.
త్వం మాభివద ధర్మజ్ఞ మహర్షే సత్యవిక్రమ৷৷3.7.6৷৷

భగవన్ O revered one, అహమ్ am, రామః అస్మి I am Rama, భవన్తమ్ you, ద్రష్టుమ్ to see, ఆగతః I came, త్వం you, ధర్మజ్ఞ knower of dharma, సత్యవిక్రమ having truth as your prowess, మహర్షే great sage, మా me, అభివద speak.
O venerable one, I am Rama.You are a great sage, armed with truth as your prowess and a knower of dharma. I have come to see you. Could you speak to me?
స నిరీక్ష్య తతో ధీరో రామం ధర్మభృతాం వరమ్.
సమాశ్లిష్య చ బాహుభ్యామిదం వచనమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.7.7৷৷

తతః thereafter, ధీరః composed, సః he (Sutikshna), ధర్మభృతామ్ among righteous men, వరమ్ best, రామమ్ to Rama, నిరీక్ష్య looking at, బాహుభ్యామ్ with both his arms, సమాశ్లిష్య చ after embracing, ఇదమ్ these, వచనమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ said.
Thereafter the composed Sutikshna, looked at Rama, the best among righteous men, and embracing him with both his arms said:
స్వాగతం తే రఘుశ్రేష్ఠ రామ సత్యభృతాం వర.
ఆశ్రమోయం త్వయాక్రాన్తస్సనాథ ఇవ సామ్ప్రతమ్৷৷3.7.8৷৷

రఘుశ్రేష్ఠ scions of the Raghu family, సత్యభృతామ్ among upholders of truth, వర the best, రామ Rama, తే to you, స్వాగతమ్ welcome, సామ్ప్రతమ్ presently, త్వయా your, ఆక్రాన్తః occupied, అయమ్ this, ఆశ్రమః hermitage, సనాథః ఇవ one that has a protector.
O Rama, the best among the Raghavas and among the upholders of truth, you are welcome. With your presence this hermitage will have a protector now.
ప్రతీక్షమాణస్త్వామేవ నారోహేహం మహాయశః.
దేవలోకమితో వీర దేహం త్యక్త్వా మహీతలే.
చిత్రకూటముపాదాయ రాజ్యభ్రష్టోసి మే శ్రుతః৷৷3.7.9৷৷

మహాయశః O illustrious one, వీర heroic one, అహమ్ I, త్వామేవ you only, ప్రతీక్ష్మాణః waiting for you, మహీతలే on earth, దేహమ్ body, త్యక్త్వా giving up, ఇతః from here, దేవలోకమ్ world of the gods, నారోహే I do not ascend, రాజ్యభ్రష్టః renouncing the kingdom, చిత్రకూటమ్ Chitrakuta, ఉపాదాయ after taking, అసి you are, మే I, శ్రుతః heard.
O renowned hero, I had heard that you have come to Chitrakuta, renouncing your
kingdom. I have been waiting so long to see you here. Unable to give up this body, I did not even leave the earth for heaven, the world of the gods.
ఇహోపయాతః కాకుత్థ్స! దేవరాజశ్శతక్రతుః৷৷3.7.10৷৷
ఉపాగమ్య చ మే దేవో మహాదేవస్సురేశ్వరః.
సర్వాన్ లోకాఞ్జితానాహ మమ పుణ్యేన కర్మణా৷৷3.7.11৷৷
ఉపాగమ్య చ మే దేవో మహాదేవస్సురేశ్వరః.
సర్వాన్ లోకాఞ్జితానాహ మమ పుణ్యేన కర్మణా৷৷3.7.11৷৷
కాకుత్థ్స! scion of the Kakutstha family, శతక్రతుః Indra, దేవరాజః king of the gods, ఇహ here, ఉపయాతః came to me, మహాదేవః chief of the gods, సురేశ్వరః Indra, దేవః deity, ఉపాగమ్య after he came here, మమ my, పుణ్యేన కర్మణా by meritorious act, సర్వాన్ all, లోకాన్ worlds, జితాన్ won, మే by me, ఆహ said.
O scion of the Kakutstha family, Indra, king of the gods came to me and said that by my meritorious deeds I have won all the worlds.
తేషు దేవర్షిజుష్టేషు జితేషు తపసా మయా.
మత్ప్రసాదాత్సభార్యస్త్వం విహరస్వ సలక్ష్మణః৷৷3.7.12৷৷

మయా by me, జితేషు which have been won, దేవర్షిజుష్టేషు worlds served by divine sages like Narada, తేషు those, సభార్యః with your wife, సలక్ష్మణః and with Lakshmana, త్వమ్ you, మత్ప్రసాదాత్ by my grace, విహరస్వ move about.
Along with your wife and Lakshmana you may roam by my grace the worlds won by me and served by divine sages like devarsi Narada.
తముగ్రతపసాయుక్తం మహర్షిం సత్యవాదినమ్.
ప్రత్యువాచాత్మవాన్రామో బ్రహ్మాణమివ కాశ్యపః৷৷3.7.13৷৷

ఆత్మవాన్ self-possessed, రామః Rama, ఉగ్రతపసాయుక్తం doing severe penance, సత్యవాదినమ్ to the truthful తం మహర్షిమ్ to that great sage, కాశ్యపః Kasyapa, బ్రహ్మాణమివ as he would speak to Brahma, ప్రత్యువాచ thus replied.
Self-possessed Rama replied to the truthful ascetic who had performed intense penance. Just as Kasyapa would address Lord Brahma:
అహమేవాహరిష్యామి సర్వాన్ లోకాన్మహామునే.
ఆవాసం త్వహమిచ్ఛామి ప్రదిష్టమిహ కాననే৷৷3.7.14৷৷

మహామునే O great sage, అహమేవ I alone, సర్వాన్ all, లోకాన్ worlds, ఆహరిష్యామి I will win, తు but, అహమ్ I, ఇహ here, కాననే in the forest, ప్రదిష్టమ్ directed, ఆవాసమ్ residence, ఇచ్ఛామి intend to.
O great sage! I will win all the worlds myself. I (only) want to live in this forest. Allow me.
భవాన్సర్వత్ర కుశలస్సర్వభూతహితే రతః.
ఆఖ్యాతశ్శరభఙ్గేణ గౌతమేన మహాత్మనా৷৷3.7.15৷৷

భవాన్ you, సర్వత్ర all, కుశలః are keeping well, సర్వభూతహితే in the welfare of all living beings, రతః ever engaged గౌతమేన of Gautama, మహాత్మనా by a great sage, శరభఙ్గేణ by Sarabhanga, ఆఖ్యాతః told.
You are ever engaged in the welfare of all beings. I have heard this from the great sage Sarabhanga of Gautama's clan.
ఏవముక్తస్తు రామేణ మహర్షిర్లోకవిశ్రుతః.
అబ్రవీన్మధురం వాక్యం హర్షేణ మహతాప్లుతః৷৷3.7.16৷৷

రామేణ by Rama, ఏవమ్ thus, ఉక్తః told, లోకవిశ్రుతః well-known to the world, మహర్షిః great sage, మహతా with great, హర్షేణ joy, ప్లుతః overwhelmed, మధురమ్ sweet, వాక్యమ్ words, అబ్రవీత్ said.
Thus addressed by Rama, Sutikshna, the great sage, well-known to the world was highly delighted. He (then) said these sweet words:
అయమేవాశ్రమో రామ గుణవాన్రమ్యతామిహ.
ఋషిసఙ్ఘానుచరితస్సదా మూలఫలైర్యుతః৷৷3.7.17৷৷

రామ O Rama, ఋషిసఙ్ఘానుచరితః where hosts of sages live, మూలఫలైః with roots and fruits, యుతః endowed, అయమ్ this, ఆశ్రమః ఏవ hermitage only, గుణవాన్ is good, రమ్యతామ్ enjoy, ఇహ here.
O Rama! this is a salubrious hermitage where hosts of sages live and which is full of roots and fruits, you may enjoy yourself here.
ఇమమాశ్రమమాగమ్య మృగసఙ్ఘా మహాయశః.
అహత్వా ప్రతిగచ్ఛన్తి లోభయిత్వాకుతోభయాః৷৷3.7.18৷৷
అహత్వా ప్రతిగచ్ఛన్తి లోభయిత్వాకుతోభయాః৷৷3.7.18৷৷
మహాయశః of great fame, మృగసఙ్ఘాః groups of animals, ఇమమ్ this, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitage, ఆగమ్య coming here, లోభయిత్వా enticing the inmates, అహత్వా without harming, అకుతోభయాః fearless, ప్రతిగచ్ఛన్తి return.
O illustrious Rama, herds of animals visit this place fearlessly, enticing the inmates and (then) go back without harming any one.
నాన్యద్ధోషం భవేదత్ర మృగేభ్యోన్యత్ర విద్ధి వై.
తచ్ఛృత్వా వచనం తస్య మహర్షేర్లక్ష్మణాగ్రజః৷৷3.7.19৷৷
ఉవాచ వచనం ధీరో వికృష్య సశరం ధనుః.

అత్ర here, మృగ్యేభ్యః from animals, అన్యత్ర other than that, అన్యత్ other, దోషం demerit, న భవేత్ is not expected, విద్ధి వై you may know, ధీరః heroic man, లక్ష్మణాగ్రజః elder brother of Lakshmana, (Rama), తస్య మహర్షేః sages, తత్ these, వచనమ్ words, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, సశరమ్ with arrow, ధనుః bow, వికృష్య lifted, వచనమ్ words, ఉవాచ said.
When heroic Rama heard that there was no other problem from the wild animals except their frequent incursions, he lifted his bow with an arrow and said these words:
తానహం సుమహాభాగ మృగసఙ్ఘాన్సమాగతాన్৷৷3.7.20৷৷
హన్యాం నిశితధారేణ శరేణాశనివర్చసా.
హన్యాం నిశితధారేణ శరేణాశనివర్చసా.
సుమహాభాగ O reverend one, సమాగతాన్ those coming here, తాన్ those, మృగసఙ్ఘాన్ herds of animals, నిశితధారేణ with sharp edge, అశనివర్చసా with a thunder-like glow, శరేణ by arrow, హన్యామ్ I will kill.
O reverend one, I will kill with a sharp-edged arrow, glowing like a thunderbolt, all those herds of animals who keep coming here.
భవాంస్తత్రాభిషజ్యేత కింస్యాత్కృచ్ఛ్రతరం తతః৷৷3.7.21৷৷
ఏతస్మిన్నాశ్రమే వాసం చిరం తు న సమర్థయే.
ఏతస్మిన్నాశ్రమే వాసం చిరం తు న సమర్థయే.
తత్ర then, భవాన్ you, అభిషజ్యేత harass, తతః కృచ్ఛ్రతరమ్ may cause pain, కిం స్యాత్ what could be there?, ఏతస్మిన్ in this, ఆశ్రమే hermitage, చిరమ్ for a long time, వాసమ్ residence, న not, సమర్థయే I foresee.
What can be more agonizing for you (than my killing animals). I (therefore) do not foresee our long stay in this hermitage.
తమేవముక్త్వోపరమం రామస్సన్ధ్యాముపాగమత్৷৷3.7.22৷৷
అన్వాస్య పశ్చిమాం స్నధ్యాం తత్ర వాసమకల్పయత్.
సుతీక్ష్ణస్యాశ్రమే రమ్యే సీతయా లక్ష్మణేన చ৷৷3.7.23৷৷
అన్వాస్య పశ్చిమాం స్నధ్యాం తత్ర వాసమకల్పయత్.

రామః Rama, తమ్ him, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్త్వా having said, ఉపరమమ్ stopped there, సన్ధ్యామ్ to the evening twilight, ఉపాగమత్ drew to a close, పశ్చిమాం సన్ధ్యామ్ at Sunset in the west, అన్వాస్య to offer (oblation), సీతయా with Sita, లక్ష్మణేన చ and Lakshmana, సుతీక్షణస్య at Sutikshna's, తత్ర then, రమ్యే in a delightful, ఆశ్రమే hermitage, వాసమ్ stay, అకల్పయత్ arranged.
Rama stopped with this. And then the evening drew to a close. Offering his evening oblation, he arranged for his stay along with Sita and Lakshmana in the delightful hermitage of Sutikshna.
తతశ్శుభం తాపసభోజ్యమన్నం స్వయం సుతీక్ష్ణః పురుషర్షభాభ్యామ్.
తాభ్యాం సుసత్కృత్య దదౌ మహాత్మా సన్ధ్యానివృత్తౌ రజనీం మవేక్ష్య৷৷3.7.24৷৷
తాభ్యాం సుసత్కృత్య దదౌ మహాత్మా సన్ధ్యానివృత్తౌ రజనీం మవేక్ష్య৷৷3.7.24৷৷
తతః then, మహాత్మా the great sage, సుతీక్ష్ణః Sutikshna, సన్ధ్యానివృత్తౌ evening twilight had passed, రజనీమ్ night, తాభ్యామ్ to both of them, పురుషర్షభాభ్యామ్ to both best of men, తాపస భోజ్యమ్ (యోగ్యమ్) that which is fit for ascetics, అన్నమ్ food, సుసత్కృత్య with all hospitality, స్వయమ్ himself, దదౌ presented.
Seeing that the evening had passed and night had set in, the great sage Sutikshna with due hospitality, served those best of men, food fit for ascetics.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే సప్తమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the seventh sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
