[Rama and Lakshmana sever the arms of Kabandha-- reveal their identity to him-- Kabandha welcomes Rama and Lakshmana-- his lamentation.]

ತೌ ತು ತತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಿತೌ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ.

ಬಾಹುಪಾಶಪರಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತೌ ಕಬನ್ಧೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷3.70.1৷৷


ಬಾಹುಪಾಶಪರಿಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತೌ bound by the shackles of his arms, ತತ್ರ ಸ್ಥಿತೌ both stood there, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ brothers, ತೌ both, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ Rama and Lakshmana, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ಕಬನ್ಧಃ Kabandha, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Kabandha saw the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, stand there bound by the shackles of his arms and said:
ತಿಷ್ಠತಃ ಕಿಂ ನು ಮಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕ್ಷುಧಾರ್ತಂ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯರ್ಷಭೌ.

ಆಹಾರಾರ್ಥಂ ತು ಸನ್ದಿಷ್ಟೌ ದೈವೇನ ಗತಚೇತಸೌ৷৷3.70.2৷৷


ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯರ್ಷಭೌ two bulls among the kshatriyas, ಕ್ಷುಧಾರ್ತಮ್ suffering from hunger, ಮಾಮ್ me, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ಕಿಂ ನು why do you, ತಿಷ್ಠತಃ both stand here, ಗತಚೇತಸೌ with the senses lost, ದೈವೇನ by god, ಆಹಾರಾರ್ಥಮ್ for my food, ಸನ್ದಿಷ್ಟೌ are sent.

O bulls among the kshatriyas! You are sent by destiny as food to appease my hunger. Seeing me hungry, why do you stand there with your senses switched off ?
ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಂ ಹಿತಂ ತದಾ.

ಉವಾಚಾರ್ತಿಂ ಸಮಾಪನ್ನೋ ವಿಕ್ರಮೇ ಕೃತಲಕ್ಷಣಃ৷৷3.70.3৷৷

ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ಮಾಂ ಚ ಪುರಾ ತೂರ್ಣಮಾದತ್ತೇ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಮಃ.

ತಸ್ಮಾದಸಿಭ್ಯಾಮಸ್ಯಾಶು ಬಾಹೂ ಛಿನ್ದಾವಹೈ ಗುರೂ৷৷3.70.4৷৷


ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಧಮಃ this vile demon, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ quickly, ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ your, ಮಾಂ ಚ and me, ಪುರಾ ಆದತ್ತೇ before he gulps, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಗುರೂ long, ಬಾಹೂ shoulders, ಅಸಿಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by our swords, ಛಿನ್ದಾವಹೈ cut off.

ಲೋಕಂ ಹ್ಯತಿಜಿತಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಹ್ಯಾವಾಂ ಹನ್ತುಮಿಹೇಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷3.70.5৷৷


ಭೀಷಣಃ horrible, ಮಹಾಕಾಯಃ huge, ಭುಜವಿಕ್ರಮಃ having the strength of his arms, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ demon, ಲೋಕಮ್ world, ಅತಿಜಿತಮ್ having conquered, ಕೃತ್ವಾ after doing so, ಇಹ here, ಆವಾಮ್ us, ಹನ್ತುಮ್ to kill, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ intends.

This huge, horrible demon with the strength of his arms has conquered the world, and now intends to kill us here.
ನಿಶ್ಚೇಷ್ಟಾನಾಂ ವಧೋ ರಾಜನ್ಕುತ್ಸಿತೋ ಜಗತೀಪತೇಃ.

ಕ್ರತುಮಧ್ಯೋಪನೀತಾನಾಂ ಪಶೂನಾಮಿವ ರಾಘವ৷৷3.70.6৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ king, ರಾಘವ of the Raghu race, ನಿಶ್ಚೇಷ್ಟಾನಾಮ್ of harmless creatures, ವಧಃ killing, ಕ್ರತುಮಧ್ಯೋಪನೀತಾನಾಮ್ brought in the midst of a sacrifice, ಪಶೂನಾಮಿವ like animals, ಜಗತೀಪತೇಃ lord of the world, ಕುತ್ಸಿತಃ censurable.

O prince of the Raghu race ! just as the animal brought in the midst of a sacrifice should not be killed, so also for a king to kill any harmless creature is despicable.
ಏತತ್ಸಞ್ಜಲ್ಪಿತಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತಯೋಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಸ್ತು ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ.

ವಿದಾರ್ಯಾಸ್ಯಂ ತದಾ ರೌದ್ರಸ್ತೌ ಭಕ್ಷಯಿತುಮಾರಭತ್৷৷3.70.7৷৷


ಕ್ರೂರಃ cruel, ರೌದ್ರಃ ferocious, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಸ್ತು the demon, ತದಾ then, ತಯೋಃ them, ಸಞ್ಜಲ್ಪಿತಮ್ conversing, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಆಸ್ಯಮ್ mouth, ವಿದಾರ್ಯ widely opening, ತೌ them, ಭಕ್ಷಯಿತುಮ್ to eat, ಆರಭತ್ made an effort.

The cruel, ferocious demon heard them talk. He opened his mouth and attempted to eat both of them.
ತತಸ್ತೌ ದೇಶಕಾಲಜ್ಞೌ ಖಡ್ಗಾಭ್ಯಾಮೇವ ರಾಘವೌ.

ಅಚ್ಛಿನ್ದತಾಂ ಸುಸಂವಿಗ್ನೌ ಬಾಹೂ ತಸ್ಯಾಂಸದೇಶತಃ৷৷3.70.8৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಸುಸಂವಿಗ್ನೌ became agitated, ದೇಶಕಾಲಜ್ಞೌ knowers of time and space, ತೌ those two, ರಾಘವೌ Raghavas, ಖಡ್ಗಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ with their swords, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಬಾಹೂ two arms, ಅಂಸದೇಶತಃ from the shoulders, ಅಚ್ಛಿನ್ದತಾಮ್ cut off.

Then the agitated brothers, aware of time and space, quickly pulled out their swords and cut off both his arms from the shoulders.
ದಕ್ಷಿಣೋ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಬಾಹುಮಸಕ್ತಮಸಿನಾ ತತಃ.

ಚಿಚ್ಛೇದ ರಾಮೋ ವೇಗೇನ ಸವ್ಯಂ ವೀರಸ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ৷৷3.70.9৷৷


ತತಃ then, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ standing on the right, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅಸಕ್ತಮ್ severed, ವೇಗೇನ quickly, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಬಾಹುಮ್ right arm, ಅಸಿನಾ with a sword, ಚಿಚ್ಛೇದ cut off, ವೀರಃ hero, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ತು Lakshmana, ಸವ್ಯಮ್ left arm.

While standing on the right, Rama cut off his right arm and the brave Lakshmana cut off the left.
ಸ ಪಪಾತ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಶ್ಛಿನ್ನಬಾಹುರ್ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಃ.

ಖಂ ಚ ಗಾಂ ಚ ದಿಶಶ್ಚೈವ ನಾದಯಞ್ಜಲದೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷3.70.10৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ with strong arms, ಸಃ that, ಛಿನ್ನಬಾಹುಃ with his arms severed, ಮಹಾಸ್ವನಃ roaring, ಜಲದಃ ಯಥಾ like a stormy cloud, ಖಂ ಚ sky, ಗಾಂ ಚ earth, ದಿಶಶ್ಚೈವ quarters, ನಾದಯನ್ while resounding, ಪಪಾತ he fell down.

ದೀನಃ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ತೌ ವೀರೌ ಕೌ ಯುವಾಮಿತಿ ದಾನವಃ৷৷3.70.11৷৷

ಅಸ್ಯೈವಾವರಜಂ ವಿದ್ದಿ ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಮಾಂ ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್৷৷3.70.13৷৷

ರಕ್ಷಸಾಪಹೃತಾ ಪತ್ನೀ ಯಾಮಿಚ್ಛನ್ತಾವಿಹಾಗತೌ৷৷3.70.14৷৷


ವಿಜನೇ desolate, ವನೇ in the forest, ವಸತಃ living, ದೇವಪ್ರಭಾವಸ್ಯ as powerful as a god, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಪತ್ನೀ wife, ರಕ್ಷಸಾ by a demon, ಅಪಹೃತಾ is carried off, ಯಾಮ್ whom, ಇಚ್ಛನ್ತೌ both wishing, ಇಹ here, ಆಗತೌ came.

ಆಸ್ಯೇನೋರಸಿ ದೀಪ್ತೇನ ಭಗ್ನಜಙ್ಘೋ ವಿಚೇಷ್ಟಸೇ৷৷3.70.15৷৷

Who are you with only the trunk of the body, and a glittering mouth in the chest with your calf muscles broken rolling down in the forest?
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಃ ಕಬನ್ಧಸ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನೋತ್ತರಂ ವಚಃ.

ಉವಾಚ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತ ಸ್ತದಿನ್ದ್ರವಚನಂ ಸ್ಮರನ್৷৷3.70.16৷৷

ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ಚೇಮೌ ನಿಕೃತ್ತೌ ಮೇ ಯುವಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಬಾಹುಬನ್ಧನೌ৷৷3.70.17৷৷


ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೌ two tigers among men, ವಾಮ್ to you, ಸ್ವಾಗತಮ್ welcome, ಅಹಮ್ I, ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ luckily, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see, ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ by my luck, ಯುವಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by both of you, ಮೇ my, ಇಮೌ these, ಬಾಹುಬನ್ಧನೌ that arms which bound you, ನಿಕೃತ್ತೌ are cut off.

O tigers among men! you are welcome. It is my good luck that I am able to see you. It is my good luck also that the arms that bound you have been amputated.
ವಿರೂಪಂ ಯಚ್ಚ ಮೇ ರೂಪಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಂ ಹ್ಯವಿನಯಾದ್ಯಥಾ.

ತನ್ಮೇ ಶೃಣು ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ತತ್ತ್ವತಶ್ಶಂಸತಸ್ತವ৷৷3.70.18৷৷
