Sloka & Translation

[Rama and Lakshmana sever the arms of Kabandha-- reveal their identity to him-- Kabandha welcomes Rama and Lakshmana-- his lamentation.]

తౌ తు తత్ర స్థితౌ దృష్ట్వా భ్రాతరౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ.

బాహుపాశపరిక్షిప్తౌ కబన్ధో వాక్యమబ్రవీత్৷৷3.70.1৷৷


బాహుపాశపరిక్షిప్తౌ bound by the shackles of his arms, తత్ర స్థితౌ both stood there, భ్రాతరౌ brothers, తౌ both, రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, కబన్ధః Kabandha, వాక్యమ్ these words, అబ్రవీత్ said.

Kabandha saw the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, stand there bound by the shackles of his arms and said:
తిష్ఠతః కిం ను మాం దృష్ట్వా క్షుధార్తం క్షత్రియర్షభౌ.

ఆహారార్థం తు సన్దిష్టౌ దైవేన గతచేతసౌ৷৷3.70.2৷৷


క్షత్రియర్షభౌ two bulls among the kshatriyas, క్షుధార్తమ్ suffering from hunger, మామ్ me, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, కిం ను why do you, తిష్ఠతః both stand here, గతచేతసౌ with the senses lost, దైవేన by god, ఆహారార్థమ్ for my food, సన్దిష్టౌ are sent.

O bulls among the kshatriyas! You are sent by destiny as food to appease my hunger. Seeing me hungry, why do you stand there with your senses switched off ?
తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా లక్ష్మణో వాక్యం ప్రాప్తకాలం హితం తదా.

ఉవాచార్తిం సమాపన్నో విక్రమే కృతలక్షణః৷৷3.70.3৷৷


లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, తత్ that, శ్రుత్వా having heard, తదా then, ఆర్తిమ్ suffering, సమాపన్నః he underwent, విక్రమే to exhibit courage, కృతలక్షణః he has resorted to, ప్రాప్తకాలమ్ appropriate time, హితమ్ good, వాక్యమ్ words, ఉవాచ said.

Having heard this, Lakshmana, who was greatly suffering gathered courage at appropriate time and said these salutary words:
త్వాం చ మాం చ పురా తూర్ణమాదత్తే రాక్షసాధమః.

తస్మాదసిభ్యామస్యాశు బాహూ ఛిన్దావహై గురూ৷৷3.70.4৷৷


రాక్షసాధమః this vile demon, తూర్ణమ్ quickly, త్వాం చ your, మాం చ and me, పురా ఆదత్తే before he gulps, తస్మాత్ therefore, అస్య his, గురూ long, బాహూ shoulders, అసిభ్యామ్ by our swords, ఛిన్దావహై cut off.

Before this vile demon gulps you and me let us cut off his long arms with our swords.
భీషణోయం మహాకాయో రాక్షసో భుజవిక్రమః.

లోకం హ్యతిజితం కృత్వా హ్యావాం హన్తుమిహేచ్ఛతి৷৷3.70.5৷৷


భీషణః horrible, మహాకాయః huge, భుజవిక్రమః having the strength of his arms, రాక్షసః demon, లోకమ్ world, అతిజితమ్ having conquered, కృత్వా after doing so, ఇహ here, ఆవామ్ us, హన్తుమ్ to kill, ఇచ్ఛతి intends.

This huge, horrible demon with the strength of his arms has conquered the world, and now intends to kill us here.
నిశ్చేష్టానాం వధో రాజన్కుత్సితో జగతీపతేః.

క్రతుమధ్యోపనీతానాం పశూనామివ రాఘవ৷৷3.70.6৷৷


రాజన్ king, రాఘవ of the Raghu race, నిశ్చేష్టానామ్ of harmless creatures, వధః killing, క్రతుమధ్యోపనీతానామ్ brought in the midst of a sacrifice, పశూనామివ like animals, జగతీపతేః lord of the world, కుత్సితః censurable.

O prince of the Raghu race ! just as the animal brought in the midst of a sacrifice should not be killed, so also for a king to kill any harmless creature is despicable.
ఏతత్సఞ్జల్పితం శ్రుత్వా తయోః క్రుద్ధస్తు రాక్షసః.

విదార్యాస్యం తదా రౌద్రస్తౌ భక్షయితుమారభత్৷৷3.70.7৷৷


క్రూరః cruel, రౌద్రః ferocious, రాక్షసస్తు the demon, తదా then, తయోః them, సఞ్జల్పితమ్ conversing, శ్రుత్వా having heard, ఆస్యమ్ mouth, విదార్య widely opening, తౌ them, భక్షయితుమ్ to eat, ఆరభత్ made an effort.

The cruel, ferocious demon heard them talk. He opened his mouth and attempted to eat both of them.
తతస్తౌ దేశకాలజ్ఞౌ ఖడ్గాభ్యామేవ రాఘవౌ.

అచ్ఛిన్దతాం సుసంవిగ్నౌ బాహూ తస్యాంసదేశతః৷৷3.70.8৷৷


తతః then, సుసంవిగ్నౌ became agitated, దేశకాలజ్ఞౌ knowers of time and space, తౌ those two, రాఘవౌ Raghavas, ఖడ్గాభ్యామ్ with their swords, తస్య his, బాహూ two arms, అంసదేశతః from the shoulders, అచ్ఛిన్దతామ్ cut off.

Then the agitated brothers, aware of time and space, quickly pulled out their swords and cut off both his arms from the shoulders.
దక్షిణో దక్షిణం బాహుమసక్తమసినా తతః.

చిచ్ఛేద రామో వేగేన సవ్యం వీరస్తు లక్ష్మణః৷৷3.70.9৷৷


తతః then, దక్షిణః standing on the right, రామః Rama, అసక్తమ్ severed, వేగేన quickly, దక్షిణం బాహుమ్ right arm, అసినా with a sword, చిచ్ఛేద cut off, వీరః hero, లక్ష్మణస్తు Lakshmana, సవ్యమ్ left arm.

While standing on the right, Rama cut off his right arm and the brave Lakshmana cut off the left.
స పపాత మహాబాహుశ్ఛిన్నబాహుర్మహాస్వనః.

ఖం చ గాం చ దిశశ్చైవ నాదయఞ్జలదో యథా৷৷3.70.10৷৷


మహాబాహుః with strong arms, సః that, ఛిన్నబాహుః with his arms severed, మహాస్వనః roaring, జలదః యథా like a stormy cloud, ఖం చ sky, గాం చ earth, దిశశ్చైవ quarters, నాదయన్ while resounding, పపాత he fell down.

The strong-armed demon, his arms severed, rumbling like a rain-cloud filling the sky, the earth and the quarters, fell down.
స నికృత్తౌ భుజౌ దృష్ట్వా శోణితౌఘపరిప్లుతః.

దీనః పప్రచ్ఛ తౌ వీరౌ కౌ యువామితి దానవః৷৷3.70.11৷৷


సః that, దానవః demon, నికృత్తౌ with amputated, భూజౌ arms, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, శోణితౌఘపరిప్లుతః drenched in the flood of blood, దీనః a pathetic one, యువామ్ you both, కౌ who are you, ఇతి thus, తౌ వీరౌ those two heroes, పప్రచ్ఛ asked.

The demon with his arms amputated, drenched in a pool of blood looked pathetic and asked them, Who are you?
ఇతి తస్య బ్రువాణస్య లక్ష్మణశ్శుభలక్షణః.

శశంస రాఘవం తస్య కబన్ధస్య మహాత్మనః৷৷3.70.12৷৷


తస్య his, ఇతి thus, బ్రువాణస్య when he was speaking, శుభలక్షణః a man of auspicious traits, సః లక్ష్మణః Lakshmana, మహాత్మనః of the great self, కబన్ధస్య of Kabandha, రాఘవమ్ Raghava, శశంస revealed.

Imbued with auspicious signs, Lakshmana revealed the identity of Rama to great Kabandha.
అయమిక్ష్వాకుదాయాదో రామో నామ జనైశ్శ్రుతః.

అస్యైవావరజం విద్ది భ్రాతరం మాం చ లక్ష్మణమ్৷৷3.70.13৷৷


అయమ్ he, రామో నామ by name Rama, జనైః by people, శ్రుతః famous, ఇక్ష్వాకుదాయాదః an heir of the Ikshvaku family, మామ్ me, అస్య his, అవరజం భ్రాతరమ్ as his younger brother, లక్ష్మణమ్ Lakshmana, విద్ది you may know me,

Here is Rama, an heir of the Ikshvaku family, known to the people and I am his younger brother Lakshmana for your information.
అస్య దేవప్రభావస్య వసతో విజనే వనే.

రక్షసాపహృతా పత్నీ యామిచ్ఛన్తావిహాగతౌ৷৷3.70.14৷৷


విజనే desolate, వనే in the forest, వసతః living, దేవప్రభావస్య as powerful as a god, అస్య his, పత్నీ wife, రక్షసా by a demon, అపహృతా is carried off, యామ్ whom, ఇచ్ఛన్తౌ both wishing, ఇహ here, ఆగతౌ came.

He is equal to a god in prowess. While living in this desolate forest his wife has been carried off by a demon. We both came here searching for her.
త్వం తు కో వా కిమర్థం వా కబన్ధసదృశో వనే.

ఆస్యేనోరసి దీప్తేన భగ్నజఙ్ఘో విచేష్టసే৷৷3.70.15৷৷


త్వం తు you, కః వా who are you, కబన్ధసదృశః appearing like a trunk, ఉరసి in the chest, దీప్తేన by a glittering, ఆస్యేన with a mouth, భగ్నజఙ్ఘః with calf muscles broken, వనే in the forest, కిమర్థం వా for what purpose, విచేష్టసే you are rolling down?

Who are you with only the trunk of the body, and a glittering mouth in the chest with your calf muscles broken rolling down in the forest?
ఏవముక్తః కబన్ధస్తు లక్ష్మణేనోత్తరం వచః.

ఉవాచ పరమప్రీత స్తదిన్ద్రవచనం స్మరన్৷৷3.70.16৷৷


లక్ష్మణేన by Lakshmana, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్తః having been told, కబన్ధస్తు the Kabandha, తత్ that, ఇన్ద్రవచనమ్ Indra's words, స్మరన్ remembering, పరమప్రీతః very pleased, ఉత్తరమ్ reply, వచః words, ఉవాచ said.

While hearing Lakshmana, Kabandha, reminded of Indra's words, replied to him in great joy :
స్వాగతం వాం నరవ్యాఘ్రౌ దిష్ట్యా పశ్యామి చాప్యహమ్.

దిష్ట్యా చేమౌ నికృత్తౌ మే యువాభ్యాం బాహుబన్ధనౌ৷৷3.70.17৷৷


నరవ్యాఘ్రౌ two tigers among men, వామ్ to you, స్వాగతమ్ welcome, అహమ్ I, దిష్ట్యా luckily, పశ్యామి I see, దిష్ట్యా by my luck, యువాభ్యామ్ by both of you, మే my, ఇమౌ these, బాహుబన్ధనౌ that arms which bound you, నికృత్తౌ are cut off.

O tigers among men! you are welcome. It is my good luck that I am able to see you. It is my good luck also that the arms that bound you have been amputated.
విరూపం యచ్చ మే రూపం ప్రాప్తం హ్యవినయాద్యథా.

తన్మే శృణు నరవ్యాఘ్ర తత్త్వతశ్శంసతస్తవ৷৷3.70.18৷৷


నరవ్యాఘ్ర O best among men (Rama), మే my, విరూపమ్ deformity, యత్ such, రూపమ్ form, యథా as, అవినయాత్ due to haughtiness, ప్రాప్తమ్ is obtained, తవ to your, తత్త్వతః exactly, శంసతః as I narrate, మే from me, శృణు you may listen.

O best among men! hear how I have been deformed due to my haughtiness.
ఇత్యార్ష శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే సప్తతితమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the seventieth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
