Sloka & Translation

[Rama and Lakshmana visit the hermitage of Sabari-- Sabari's hospitality-they go round the forest and hermitage of sage Matanga-- Sabari casts her body into the fire and ascends to heaven.]

tau kabandhēna taṅ mārgaṅ pampāyā darśitaṅ vanē.

pratasthaturdiśaṅ gṛhya pratīcīṅ nṛvarātmajau৷৷3.74.1৷৷


tau both, nṛvarātmajau the two princes, vanē in the forest, pratīcīṅ diśam western direction showed by, gṛhya took, kabandhēna by Kabandha, darśitaṅ shown by, tam him, pampāyāḥ Pampa's, mārgam way, pratasthatuḥ both set out.

The two princes set forth in the western direction towards Pampa shown by Kabandha.
tau śailēṣvācitānēkān kṣaudrakalpaphalāndrumān.

vīkṣantau jagmaturdhraṣṭuṅ sugrīvaṅ rāmalakṣmaṇau৷৷3.74.2৷৷


tau rāmalakṣmaṇau Rama and Lakshmana, śailēṣu in the mountain, ācitān loaded with, kṣaudrakalpaphalān honey like fruits, drumān trees, vīkṣantau seeing, sugrīvam Sugriva, draṣṭum to see, jagmatuḥ both went.

Observing the trees loaded with honey-sweet fruits on the mountain, Rama and Lakshmana went to see Sugriva.
kṛtvā ca śailapṛṣṭhē tu tau vāsaṅ rāmalakṣmaṇau.

pampāyāḥ paścimaṅ tīraṅ rāghavāvupatasthatuḥ৷৷3.74.3৷৷


rāghavau Rama, tau rāmalakṣmaṇau both Rama and Lakshmana, śailapṛṣṭhē on the slope of the mountain, vāsam stay, kṛtvā made, pampāyāḥ Pampa's, paścimaṅ tīram western bank, upatasthatuḥ
started on that path.

Rama and Lakshmana halted on the slope of the mountain and then departed for the western bank of Pampa.
tau puṣkariṇyāḥ pampāyāstīramāsādya paścimam.

apaśyatāṅ tatastatra śabaryā ramyamāśramam৷৷3.74.4৷৷


tataḥ then, tau both, pampāyāḥ Pampa, puṣkariṇyāḥ of the tank, paścimam western, tīram bank, āsādya reached, tatra there, śabaryāḥ of Sabari, ramyam delightful, āśramam hermitage, apaśyatām observed.

Both reached the west bank of lake Pampa and saw the delightful hermitage of Sabari.
tau tamāśramamāsādya drumairbahubhīrāvṛtam.

suramyamabhivīkṣantau śabarīmabhyupēyatuḥ৷৷3.74.5৷৷


tau they both, tam that, āśramam hermitge, āsādya after reaching, bahubhiḥ with many, drumaiḥ with many trees, āvṛtam surrounded, suramyam very beautiful, abhivīkṣantau both looking at, śabarīm Sabari's, abhyupēyatuḥ went towards.

Both reached the beautiful hermitage full of many kinds of trees. There they saw Sabari, and went towards her.
tau ca dṛṣṭvā tadā siddhā samutthāya kṛtāñjaliḥ.

rāmasya pādau jagrāha lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ৷৷3.74.6৷৷


tadā then, siddhā an accomplished ascetic, tau both, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, kṛtāñjaliḥ joined palms and offered obeisance, samutthāya having got up, rāmasya Rama's, dhīmataḥ sagacious, lakṣmaṇasya ca and Lakshmana's, pādau feet, jagrāha held.

On seeing them both, Sabari, an accomplished ascetic, got up with folded hands and
touched the feet of the sagacious Rama and Lakshmana.
pādyamācamanīyaṅ ca sarvaṅ prādādyathāvidhi.

tāmuvāca tatō rāmaśśramaṇīṅ saṅśitavratām৷৷3.74.7৷৷


pādyam water to wash feet, ācamanīyaṅ ca and water to sip, sarvam all, yathāvidhi as per tradition, prādāt she offered, tataḥ then, saṅśitavratām doing penance, tām of yours, śramaṇīm austere woman, rāmaḥ Rama, uvāca said:

She offered them water to wash their feet and water to sip as per tradition. Then Rama spoke to Sabari who used to perform austere penance:
kaccittē nirjitā vighnāḥ kaccittē vardhatē tapaḥ.

kaccittē niyataḥ krōdha āhāraśca tapōdhanē৷৷3.74.8৷৷


tapōdhanē endowed with the wealth of penance(the ascetic), tē your, vighnāḥ obstacles, nirjitāḥ kaccit hope you have overcome, tē your, tapaḥ penance, vardhatē kaccit progressing indeed, tē your, krōdhaḥ anger, āhāraśca desire for food, niyataḥ kaccit is controlled indeed?

O ascetic ! hope you have overcome your obstacles to penance, you have controlled your anger and your desire for food. Is your austerity in progress.
kaccittē niyamāḥ prāptāḥ kaccittē manasaḥ sukham.

kaccittē guruśuśrūṣā saphalā cārubhāṣiṇi৷৷3.74.9৷৷


cārubhāṣiṇi sweet-tongued, tē you, niyamāḥ self-control, prāptāḥ kaccit have you attained , tē your, manasaḥ mind, sukhaṅ kaccit attained peace, tē your, guruśuśrūṣā serving the preceptor, saphalā kaccit has yielded results?

O Sweet-tongued Sabari, have you achieved self-control? Has your mind attained peace ? Have your services to the preceptor yielded results?
rāmēṇa tāpasī pṛṣṭā sā siddhā siddhasammatā.

śaśaṅsa śabarī vṛddhā rāmāya pratyupasthitā৷৷3.74.10৷৷


rāmēṇa by Rama, pṛṣṭā enquired, siddhā an accomplished ascetic, siddhasammatā a lady adored and accepted by siddhas, tāpasī ascetic, vṛddhā old woman, sā śabarī that Sabari, pratyupasthitā standing in front, rāmāya to Rama, śaśaṅsa she spoke.

When Rama asked Sabari who was an old, accomplished ascetic adored by siddhas, she stood in front and replied :
adya prāptā tapassiddhistava saṅdarśanānmayā.

adya mē saphalaṅ taptaṅ guravaśca supūjitāḥ৷৷3.74.11৷৷


adya now, tava your, saṅdarśanāt by seeing you, mayā by me, tapassiddhi: fulfilment of my penance, prāptā is attained, adya now, mē my, taptam penance, saphalam successful, guravaśca preceptors, supūjitā: have been honoured.

On seeing you now my penance has attained fulfilment, my services to my preceptors have borne fruit.
adya mē saphalaṅ janma svargaścaiva bhaviṣyati.

tvayi dēvavarē rāma pūjitē puruṣarṣabha৷৷3.74.12৷৷


puruṣarṣabha best of men, dēvavarē best among gods, tvayi when you, pūjitē worshipped, adya now, mē my, janma birth, saphalam fruitful, svargaścaiva even heaven, bhaviṣyati is certain.

O best of men, O highest of the gods! my birth has become fruitful today with your worship, (you have made) even attainment of heaven quite certain.
cakṣuṣā tava saumyēna pūtāsmi raghunandana.

gamiṣyāmyakṣayānlōkāṅstvatprasādādarindama৷৷3.74.13৷৷


raghunandana O delight of the Raghus, tava your, saumyēna by your handsome, cakṣuṣā looks, pūtā sanctified, asmi I am, arindama O subduer of enemies, tvatprasādāt by your grace, akṣayān imperishable, lōkān worlds, gamiṣyāmi I will reach.

O delight of the Raghus, your handsome look has sanctified me, O subduer of enemies, by your grace I will reach the inmperishable worlds.
citrakūṭaṅ tvayi prāptē vimānairatulaprabhaiḥ.

itastē divamārūḍhā yānahaṅ paryacāriṣam৷৷3.74.14৷৷


aham I, yān those men, paryacāriṣam I have served, tē they, tvayi when you, citrakūṭam Chitrakutam, prāptē arrived, atulaprabhaiḥ with incomparable radiance, vimānaiḥ with aerial chariots, itaḥ from here, divam to heaven, ārūḍhāḥ I will reach.

The men I served have ascended heaven on aerial chariots of incomparable radiance the moment you touched Chitrakuta.
taiścāhamuktā dharmajñairmahābhāgairmaharṣibhiḥ.

āgamiṣyati tē rāmassupuṇyamimamāśramam৷৷3.74.15৷৷

sa tē pratigrahītavyassaumitrisahitōtithiḥ.

taṅ ca dṛṣṭvā varānlōkānakṣayāṅstvaṅ gamiṣyasi৷৷3.74.16৷৷


dharmajñaiḥ by knowers of rigteousness, mahābhāgaiḥ by the honourable, taiḥ maharṣibhiḥ by those great seers, aham I, uktā have been told, rāmaḥ Rama, tē your, supuṇyam very sacred, imam āśramam this hermitage, agamiṣyati will come, saumitrisahitaḥ along with Saumitri, saḥ he, tē for you, atithiḥ guest, pratigrahītavyaḥ receive with due reverence, tam him, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, tvam you, varān great, akṣayān inexhaustible, lōkān worlds, gamiṣyasi you will go,

Those great honourable sages who knew the ways of dharma said: 'Rama would visit this sacred hermitage along with Lakshmana. He would be your guest. Receive him
with due honour. And you would attain the great, inexhaustible worlds when you see him.'
mayā tu vividhaṅ vanyaṅ sañcitaṅ puruṣarṣabha.

tavārthē puruṣavyāghra pampāyāstīrasambhavam৷৷3.74.17৷৷


puruṣavyāghra O best among men, (raghunandana delight of the Raghus), mayā by me, tava arthē for your sake, pampāyāḥ Pampa's, tīrasambhavam grown on the bank, vividham many kinds, vanyam forest-food, sañcitam collected.

O best among men! I have collected and kept for your sake different kinds of forest-food grown on the bank of Pampa.
ēvamuktassa dharmātmā śabaryā śabarīmidam.

rāghavaḥ prāha vijñānē tāṅ nityamabahiṣkṛtām৷৷3.74.18৷৷


śabaryā by Sabari, ēvam in that way, uktaḥ addressed, dharmātmā righteous, saḥ rāghavaḥ that Rama, nityam always, vijñānē in knowledge, abahiṣkratām not kept away, tāṅ śabarīm that Sabari, prāha he said.

Entreated by her in that manner, the righteous Rama spoke to Sabari who was established in true knowledge:
danōssakāśāttattvēna prabhāvaṅ tē mahātmanaḥ.

śrutaṅ pratyakṣamicchāmi sandraṣṭuṅ yadi manyasē৷৷3.74.19৷৷


mahātmanaḥ by the great self, danōḥ sakāśāt from Danu, śrutam heard, tē your, prabhāvam power, manyasē yadi if you think so, pratyakṣam directly, (saṅ)draṣṭum to see, icchāmi I desire.

I have heard from great Danu about your power. If you agree, I would like to see this power in person.
ētattu vacanaṅ śruttā rāmavaktrādvinissṛtam.

śabarī darśayāmāsa tāvubhau tadvanaṅ mahat৷৷3.74.20৷৷


śabarī Sabari, rāmavaktrāt from Rama's mouth, vinissṛtam released, ētat this, vacanam word, śrutvā on hearing, tau ubhau both of them, mahat great, tat that, vanam garden, darśayāmāsa started showing.

At these words from the mouth of Rama, Sabari took them both round the great garden.
paśya mēghaghanaprakhyaṅ mṛgapakṣisamākulam.

mataṅgavanamityēva viśrutaṅ raghunandana৷৷.3.74.21৷৷


raghunandana O delight of the Raghus, mēghaghanaprakhyam looking like the dense cloud, mṛgapakṣisamākulam filled with animals and birds, mataṅgavanamityēva known as Matanga garden, viśrutam popular, paśya see.

O delight of the Raghus! see this garden looking like the dense cloud. Full of animals and birds, it is popularly known as Matanga garden.
iha tē bhāvitātmānō guravō mē mahāvanē.

juhavāñcakrirē tīrthaṅ mantravanmantrapūjitam৷৷3.74.22৷৷


mahāvanē in this great garden, bhāvitātmānaḥ who perceived the supreme spirit, tē they, mē guruvaḥ my preceptors, iha here, mantravat by the power of mantras, mantrapūjitam invoked by mantras, tīrtham waters, juhavāñcakrirē performed sacrifice.

My precepters, who had perceived the Supreme Spirit made sacrificial offerings in this great garden, invoked gods through the power of mantras. They brought water and offered oblations to the sacrificial fire.
iyaṅ pratyakthsalī vēdiryatra tē mē susatkṛtāḥ.

puṣpōpahāraṅ kurvanti śramādudvēpibhiḥ karaiḥ৷৷3.74.23৷৷


mē my, susatkṛtāḥ revered ones, tē they, yatra where, śramāt exhausted, udvēpibhiḥ karaiḥ did with trembling hands, puṣpōvahāram offering flowers for worship, kurvanti make, pratyakthsalī vēdiḥ altar knows as Pratyaksthali, iyam this is.

This is the altar named Pratyaksthali where the saints aged and exhausted( by performing chandrayana) whom I worshipped made offerings of flowers with trembling hands.
tēṣāṅ tapaḥprabhāvēṇa paśyādyāpi raghūdvaha.

dyōtayanti diśassarvāśśriyā vēdyō.tulaprabhāḥ৷৷3.74.24৷৷


raghūdvaha O Rama, tēṣām their, tapaḥprabhāvēṇa by the power of their penance, atulaprabhāḥ matchless brilliance, vēdyaḥ altars, śriyā with glow, adyāpi even today, sarvāḥ all, diśaḥ directions, dyōtayanti filling with light, paśya see.

O Rama! see, even now they illuminate the sacrificial altars with the power of their penance. They shed light in all directions with a matchless brilliance.
aśaknuvadbhistairgantumupavāsaśramālasaiḥ.

cintitē.bhyāgatānpaśya sahitānsaptasāgarān৷৷3.74.25৷৷


upavāsaśramālasaiḥ weariness due to fasting, gantum to move about, aśaknuvadbhiḥ having no energy, taiḥ by them, cintitē by mere thought, abhyāgatān came towards, sahitān all together, saptasāgarān all the seven seas, paśya see.

Look at the seven seas, which have reached here at their mere thought as they could not reach them due to fatigue from fasting.
kṛtābhiṣēkaistairnyastā valkalāḥ pādapēṣviha.

adyāpi nāvaśuṣyanti pradēśē raghunandana৷৷3.74.26৷৷


raghunandana delight of the Raghus, iha here, kṛtābhiṣēkaiḥ after bathing, tai: by them, pradēśē place, pādapēṣu on the trees, nyastāḥ laid to dry, valkalāḥ bark clothes, adyāpi even now, na avaśuṣyanti do not get dry still.

O delight of the Raghus ! look at the bark robes spread on the trees to dry after their bathing which are still wet.
dēvakāryāṇi kurvadbhiryānīmāni kṛtāni vai.

puṣpaiḥkuvalayaissārdhaṅ mlānatvaṅ nōpayāntivai৷৷3.74.27৷৷


dēvakāryāṇi for the worship of gods, kurvadbhi: they offered, kuvalayaiḥsārdham along with lotuses and others, puṣpaiḥ with flowers, yāni all those, kṛtāni arranged, imāni all these, mlānatvam wilted, nōpayānti vai do not attain.

The flowers including lotuses offered by the sages while worshipping gods have not yet wilted.
kṛtsnaṅ vanamidaṅ dṛṣṭaṅ śrōtavyaṅ ca śrutaṅ tvayā.

tadicchāmyabhyanujñātā tyaktumētatkalēbaram৷৷3.74.28৷৷


tvayā by you, kṛtsnam entirely, idaṅ vanam this garden, dṛṣṭam is seen, śrōtavyam to be heard, śrutaṅ ca it is heard, tat that, abhyanujñātā with your permission, ētat this, kalēbaram body, tyaktum to give up, icchāmi I desire to.

You have seen the entire garden and have listened what is to be heard. With your permission I would like to give up this body.
tēṣāmicchāmyahaṅ gantuṅ samīpaṅ bhāvitātmanām.

munīnāmāśramō yēṣāmahaṅ ca paricāriṇī৷৷3.74.29৷৷


āśramaḥ hermitage, yēṣāṅ munīnām of those seers (to whom this hermitage belongs), ahaṅ ca I, paricāriṇī I am a servant, bhāvitātmanām realisers of supreme spirit, tēṣām their, samīpam near, gantum to go, icchāmi I desire.

I wish to reach those realisers of the Supreme Spirit whom I served and to whom this hermitage belonged.
dharmiṣṭhaṅ tu vacaśśrutvā rāghavassahalakṣmaṇaḥ.

praharṣamatulaṅ lēbhē āścaryamiti tattvataḥ৷৷3.74.30৷৷


sahalakṣmaṇaḥ along with Lakshmana, rāghavaḥ Rama, dharmiṣṭham dedicated to dharma, vacaḥ words, śrutvā hearing, tattvataḥ truly, āścaryam wonderful, iti thus, atulam incomparable, praharṣam happiness, lēbhē attained.

Rama and Lakshmana on hearing the pious words of Savari joyfully exclaimed, This is really wonderful.
tāmuvāca tatō rāmaśśramaṇīṅ saṅśitavratām.

arcitō.haṅ tvayā bhaktyā gacchakāmaṅ yathāsukham৷৷3.74.31৷৷


tataḥ then, rāmaḥ Rama,saṅśitavratām determined in her vow, śramaṇīm female ascetic, uvāca said, aham I, tvayā by you, bhaktyā devotion, arcitaḥ worshipped, kāmam verily indeed, yathāsukham with pleasure, gaccha you may go.

Looking at Sabari who was steadfast in her vow, Rama said, O ascetic, you have worshipped me with devotion. You may go wherever you like (to the world you desire)
ityuktā jaṭilā vṛddhā cīrakṛṣṇājināmbarā.

tasminmuhūrtē śabarī dēhaṅ jīrṇaṅ jihāsatī৷৷3.74.32৷৷

anujñātā tu rāmēṇa hutvātmānaṅ hutāśanē.

jvalatpāvakasaṅkāśā svargamēva jagāma sā৷৷3.74.33৷৷


iti this, uktā was said, jaṭilā a woman of matted locks, vṛddhā old, cīrakṛṣṇājināmbarā woman wearing tattered bark clothes and deer skin, śabarī Sabari, jīrṇam emaciated, dēham body, tasmin mūhūrtē at that moment, jihāsatī desiring to give up, rāmēṇa by Rama, anujñātā permitted, ātmānam herself, hutāśanē in fire, hutvā after offering, jvalatpāvakasaṅkāśā body glittering like fire, svargamēva to heaven, jagāma went.

With matted locks, tattered bark clothes and deer skin, Sabari consigned her old and emaciated body to the fire at that moment, with the permission of Rama and ascended to heaven, her body glowing like fire.
divyābharaṇasaṅyuktā divyamālyānulēpanā.

divyāmbaradharā tatra babhūva priyadarśanā৷৷3.74.34৷৷

virājayantī taṅ dēśaṅ vidyutsaudāminī yathā.


divyābharaṇasaṅyuktā adorned with wonderful ornaments, divyamālyānulēpanā wearing beautiful garlands and anointed with fragrant unguents, divyāmbaradharā robed in most wonderful clothes, vidyut saudāmanī yathā like a streak of lightning, taṅ dēśam that place, virājayantī illuminating, tatra there, priyadarśanā pleasing appearance, babhūva appeared.

Adorned with wonderful ornaments and beautiful garlands, anointed with fragrant unguents, robed in most beautiful clothes, she appeared like a streak of lightning, her body shining bright and her face contented.
yatra tē sukṛtātmānō viharanti maharṣayaḥ৷৷3.74.35৷৷

tatpuṇyaṅ śabarī sthānaṅ jagāmātmasamādhinā.


śabarī Sabari, ātmasamādhinā her meditation, sukṛtātmānaḥ who did good deeds, tē maharṣayaḥ the great sages, yatra where, viharanti moved, tat that, puṇyam sacred, sthānam holy place, jagāma went.

By virtue of her self-meditation, Sabari went to that sacred world where the holy sages lived because of their good deeds.
ityārṣa śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē catussaptatitamassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the seventyfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
