[Rama and Lakshmana visit the hermitage of Sabari-- Sabari's hospitality-they go round the forest and hermitage of sage Matanga-- Sabari casts her body into the fire and ascends to heaven.]

తౌ కబన్ధేన తం మార్గం పమ్పాయా దర్శితం వనే.

ప్రతస్థతుర్దిశం గృహ్య ప్రతీచీం నృవరాత్మజౌ৷৷3.74.1৷৷


తౌ both, నృవరాత్మజౌ the two princes, వనే in the forest, ప్రతీచీం దిశమ్ western direction showed by, గృహ్య took, కబన్ధేన by Kabandha, దర్శితం shown by, తమ్ him, పమ్పాయాః Pampa's, మార్గమ్ way, ప్రతస్థతుః both set out.

The two princes set forth in the western direction towards Pampa shown by Kabandha.
తౌ శైలేష్వాచితానేకాన్ క్షౌద్రకల్పఫలాన్ద్రుమాన్.

వీక్షన్తౌ జగ్మతుర్ధ్రష్టుం సుగ్రీవం రామలక్ష్మణౌ৷৷3.74.2৷৷


తౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ Rama and Lakshmana, శైలేషు in the mountain, ఆచితాన్ loaded with, క్షౌద్రకల్పఫలాన్ honey like fruits, ద్రుమాన్ trees, వీక్షన్తౌ seeing, సుగ్రీవమ్ Sugriva, ద్రష్టుమ్ to see, జగ్మతుః both went.

Observing the trees loaded with honey-sweet fruits on the mountain, Rama and Lakshmana went to see Sugriva.
కృత్వా చ శైలపృష్ఠే తు తౌ వాసం రామలక్ష్మణౌ.

పమ్పాయాః పశ్చిమం తీరం రాఘవావుపతస్థతుః৷৷3.74.3৷৷


రాఘవౌ Rama, తౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ both Rama and Lakshmana, శైలపృష్ఠే on the slope of the mountain, వాసమ్ stay, కృత్వా made, పమ్పాయాః Pampa's, పశ్చిమం తీరమ్ western bank, ఉపతస్థతుః
started on that path.

Rama and Lakshmana halted on the slope of the mountain and then departed for the western bank of Pampa.
తౌ పుష్కరిణ్యాః పమ్పాయాస్తీరమాసాద్య పశ్చిమమ్.

అపశ్యతాం తతస్తత్ర శబర్యా రమ్యమాశ్రమమ్৷৷3.74.4৷৷


తతః then, తౌ both, పమ్పాయాః Pampa, పుష్కరిణ్యాః of the tank, పశ్చిమమ్ western, తీరమ్ bank, ఆసాద్య reached, తత్ర there, శబర్యాః of Sabari, రమ్యమ్ delightful, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitage, అపశ్యతామ్ observed.

Both reached the west bank of lake Pampa and saw the delightful hermitage of Sabari.
తౌ తమాశ్రమమాసాద్య ద్రుమైర్బహుభీరావృతమ్.

సురమ్యమభివీక్షన్తౌ శబరీమభ్యుపేయతుః৷৷3.74.5৷৷


తౌ they both, తమ్ that, ఆశ్రమమ్ hermitge, ఆసాద్య after reaching, బహుభిః with many, ద్రుమైః with many trees, ఆవృతమ్ surrounded, సురమ్యమ్ very beautiful, అభివీక్షన్తౌ both looking at, శబరీమ్ Sabari's, అభ్యుపేయతుః went towards.

Both reached the beautiful hermitage full of many kinds of trees. There they saw Sabari, and went towards her.
తౌ చ దృష్ట్వా తదా సిద్ధా సముత్థాయ కృతాఞ్జలిః.

రామస్య పాదౌ జగ్రాహ లక్ష్మణస్య చ ధీమతః৷৷3.74.6৷৷


తదా then, సిద్ధా an accomplished ascetic, తౌ both, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, కృతాఞ్జలిః joined palms and offered obeisance, సముత్థాయ having got up, రామస్య Rama's, ధీమతః sagacious, లక్ష్మణస్య చ and Lakshmana's, పాదౌ feet, జగ్రాహ held.

On seeing them both, Sabari, an accomplished ascetic, got up with folded hands and
touched the feet of the sagacious Rama and Lakshmana.
పాద్యమాచమనీయం చ సర్వం ప్రాదాద్యథావిధి.

తామువాచ తతో రామశ్శ్రమణీం సంశితవ్రతామ్৷৷3.74.7৷৷


పాద్యమ్ water to wash feet, ఆచమనీయం చ and water to sip, సర్వమ్ all, యథావిధి as per tradition, ప్రాదాత్ she offered, తతః then, సంశితవ్రతామ్ doing penance, తామ్ of yours, శ్రమణీమ్ austere woman, రామః Rama, ఉవాచ said:

She offered them water to wash their feet and water to sip as per tradition. Then Rama spoke to Sabari who used to perform austere penance:
కచ్చిత్తే నిర్జితా విఘ్నాః కచ్చిత్తే వర్ధతే తపః.

కచ్చిత్తే నియతః క్రోధ ఆహారశ్చ తపోధనే৷৷3.74.8৷৷


తపోధనే endowed with the wealth of penance(the ascetic), తే your, విఘ్నాః obstacles, నిర్జితాః కచ్చిత్ hope you have overcome, తే your, తపః penance, వర్ధతే కచ్చిత్ progressing indeed, తే your, క్రోధః anger, ఆహారశ్చ desire for food, నియతః కచ్చిత్ is controlled indeed?

O ascetic ! hope you have overcome your obstacles to penance, you have controlled your anger and your desire for food. Is your austerity in progress.
కచ్చిత్తే నియమాః ప్రాప్తాః కచ్చిత్తే మనసః సుఖమ్.

కచ్చిత్తే గురుశుశ్రూషా సఫలా చారుభాషిణి৷৷3.74.9৷৷


చారుభాషిణి sweet-tongued, తే you, నియమాః self-control, ప్రాప్తాః కచ్చిత్ have you attained , తే your, మనసః mind, సుఖం కచ్చిత్ attained peace, తే your, గురుశుశ్రూషా serving the preceptor, సఫలా కచ్చిత్ has yielded results?

O Sweet-tongued Sabari, have you achieved self-control? Has your mind attained peace ? Have your services to the preceptor yielded results?
రామేణ తాపసీ పృష్టా సా సిద్ధా సిద్ధసమ్మతా.

శశంస శబరీ వృద్ధా రామాయ ప్రత్యుపస్థితా৷৷3.74.10৷৷


రామేణ by Rama, పృష్టా enquired, సిద్ధా an accomplished ascetic, సిద్ధసమ్మతా a lady adored and accepted by siddhas, తాపసీ ascetic, వృద్ధా old woman, సా శబరీ that Sabari, ప్రత్యుపస్థితా standing in front, రామాయ to Rama, శశంస she spoke.

When Rama asked Sabari who was an old, accomplished ascetic adored by siddhas, she stood in front and replied :
అద్య ప్రాప్తా తపస్సిద్ధిస్తవ సందర్శనాన్మయా.

అద్య మే సఫలం తప్తం గురవశ్చ సుపూజితాః৷৷3.74.11৷৷


అద్య now, తవ your, సందర్శనాత్ by seeing you, మయా by me, తపస్సిద్ధి: fulfilment of my penance, ప్రాప్తా is attained, అద్య now, మే my, తప్తమ్ penance, సఫలమ్ successful, గురవశ్చ preceptors, సుపూజితా: have been honoured.

On seeing you now my penance has attained fulfilment, my services to my preceptors have borne fruit.
అద్య మే సఫలం జన్మ స్వర్గశ్చైవ భవిష్యతి.

త్వయి దేవవరే రామ పూజితే పురుషర్షభ৷৷3.74.12৷৷


పురుషర్షభ best of men, దేవవరే best among gods, త్వయి when you, పూజితే worshipped, అద్య now, మే my, జన్మ birth, సఫలమ్ fruitful, స్వర్గశ్చైవ even heaven, భవిష్యతి is certain.

O best of men, O highest of the gods! my birth has become fruitful today with your worship, (you have made) even attainment of heaven quite certain.
చక్షుషా తవ సౌమ్యేన పూతాస్మి రఘునన్దన.

గమిష్యామ్యక్షయాన్లోకాంస్త్వత్ప్రసాదాదరిన్దమ৷৷3.74.13৷৷


రఘునన్దన O delight of the Raghus, తవ your, సౌమ్యేన by your handsome, చక్షుషా looks, పూతా sanctified, అస్మి I am, అరిన్దమ O subduer of enemies, త్వత్ప్రసాదాత్ by your grace, అక్షయాన్ imperishable, లోకాన్ worlds, గమిష్యామి I will reach.

O delight of the Raghus, your handsome look has sanctified me, O subduer of enemies, by your grace I will reach the inmperishable worlds.
చిత్రకూటం త్వయి ప్రాప్తే విమానైరతులప్రభైః.

ఇతస్తే దివమారూఢా యానహం పర్యచారిషమ్৷৷3.74.14৷৷


అహమ్ I, యాన్ those men, పర్యచారిషమ్ I have served, తే they, త్వయి when you, చిత్రకూటమ్ Chitrakutam, ప్రాప్తే arrived, అతులప్రభైః with incomparable radiance, విమానైః with aerial chariots, ఇతః from here, దివమ్ to heaven, ఆరూఢాః I will reach.

The men I served have ascended heaven on aerial chariots of incomparable radiance the moment you touched Chitrakuta.
తైశ్చాహముక్తా ధర్మజ్ఞైర్మహాభాగైర్మహర్షిభిః.

ఆగమిష్యతి తే రామస్సుపుణ్యమిమమాశ్రమమ్৷৷3.74.15৷৷

స తే ప్రతిగ్రహీతవ్యస్సౌమిత్రిసహితోతిథిః.

తం చ దృష్ట్వా వరాన్లోకానక్షయాంస్త్వం గమిష్యసి৷৷3.74.16৷৷


ధర్మజ్ఞైః by knowers of rigteousness, మహాభాగైః by the honourable, తైః మహర్షిభిః by those great seers, అహమ్ I, ఉక్తా have been told, రామః Rama, తే your, సుపుణ్యమ్ very sacred, ఇమమ్ ఆశ్రమమ్ this hermitage, అగమిష్యతి will come, సౌమిత్రిసహితః along with Saumitri, సః he, తే for you, అతిథిః guest, ప్రతిగ్రహీతవ్యః receive with due reverence, తమ్ him, దృష్ట్వా after seeing, త్వమ్ you, వరాన్ great, అక్షయాన్ inexhaustible, లోకాన్ worlds, గమిష్యసి you will go,

Those great honourable sages who knew the ways of dharma said: 'Rama would visit this sacred hermitage along with Lakshmana. He would be your guest. Receive him
with due honour. And you would attain the great, inexhaustible worlds when you see him.'
మయా తు వివిధం వన్యం సఞ్చితం పురుషర్షభ.

తవార్థే పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర పమ్పాయాస్తీరసమ్భవమ్৷৷3.74.17৷৷


పురుషవ్యాఘ్ర O best among men, (రఘునన్దన delight of the Raghus), మయా by me, తవ అర్థే for your sake, పమ్పాయాః Pampa's, తీరసమ్భవమ్ grown on the bank, వివిధమ్ many kinds, వన్యమ్ forest-food, సఞ్చితమ్ collected.

O best among men! I have collected and kept for your sake different kinds of forest-food grown on the bank of Pampa.
ఏవముక్తస్స ధర్మాత్మా శబర్యా శబరీమిదమ్.

రాఘవః ప్రాహ విజ్ఞానే తాం నిత్యమబహిష్కృతామ్৷৷3.74.18৷৷


శబర్యా by Sabari, ఏవమ్ in that way, ఉక్తః addressed, ధర్మాత్మా righteous, సః రాఘవః that Rama, నిత్యమ్ always, విజ్ఞానే in knowledge, అబహిష్క్రతామ్ not kept away, తాం శబరీమ్ that Sabari, ప్రాహ he said.

Entreated by her in that manner, the righteous Rama spoke to Sabari who was established in true knowledge:
దనోస్సకాశాత్తత్త్వేన ప్రభావం తే మహాత్మనః.

శ్రుతం ప్రత్యక్షమిచ్ఛామి సన్ద్రష్టుం యది మన్యసే৷৷3.74.19৷৷


మహాత్మనః by the great self, దనోః సకాశాత్ from Danu, శ్రుతమ్ heard, తే your, ప్రభావమ్ power, మన్యసే యది if you think so, ప్రత్యక్షమ్ directly, (సం)ద్రష్టుమ్ to see, ఇచ్ఛామి I desire.

I have heard from great Danu about your power. If you agree, I would like to see this power in person.
ఏతత్తు వచనం శ్రుత్తా రామవక్త్రాద్వినిస్సృతమ్.

శబరీ దర్శయామాస తావుభౌ తద్వనం మహత్৷৷3.74.20৷৷


శబరీ Sabari, రామవక్త్రాత్ from Rama's mouth, వినిస్సృతమ్ released, ఏతత్ this, వచనమ్ word, శ్రుత్వా on hearing, తౌ ఉభౌ both of them, మహత్ great, తత్ that, వనమ్ garden, దర్శయామాస started showing.

At these words from the mouth of Rama, Sabari took them both round the great garden.
పశ్య మేఘఘనప్రఖ్యం మృగపక్షిసమాకులమ్.

మతఙ్గవనమిత్యేవ విశ్రుతం రఘునన్దన৷৷.3.74.21৷৷


రఘునన్దన O delight of the Raghus, మేఘఘనప్రఖ్యమ్ looking like the dense cloud, మృగపక్షిసమాకులమ్ filled with animals and birds, మతఙ్గవనమిత్యేవ known as Matanga garden, విశ్రుతమ్ popular, పశ్య see.

O delight of the Raghus! see this garden looking like the dense cloud. Full of animals and birds, it is popularly known as Matanga garden.
ఇహ తే భావితాత్మానో గురవో మే మహావనే.

జుహవాఞ్చక్రిరే తీర్థం మన్త్రవన్మన్త్రపూజితమ్৷৷3.74.22৷৷


మహావనే in this great garden, భావితాత్మానః who perceived the supreme spirit, తే they, మే గురువః my preceptors, ఇహ here, మన్త్రవత్ by the power of mantras, మన్త్రపూజితమ్ invoked by mantras, తీర్థమ్ waters, జుహవాఞ్చక్రిరే performed sacrifice.

My precepters, who had perceived the Supreme Spirit made sacrificial offerings in this great garden, invoked gods through the power of mantras. They brought water and offered oblations to the sacrificial fire.
ఇయం ప్రత్యక్థ్సలీ వేదిర్యత్ర తే మే సుసత్కృతాః.

పుష్పోపహారం కుర్వన్తి శ్రమాదుద్వేపిభిః కరైః৷৷3.74.23৷৷


మే my, సుసత్కృతాః revered ones, తే they, యత్ర where, శ్రమాత్ exhausted, ఉద్వేపిభిః కరైః did with trembling hands, పుష్పోవహారమ్ offering flowers for worship, కుర్వన్తి make, ప్రత్యక్థ్సలీ వేదిః altar knows as Pratyaksthali, ఇయమ్ this is.

This is the altar named Pratyaksthali where the saints aged and exhausted( by performing chandrayana) whom I worshipped made offerings of flowers with trembling hands.
తేషాం తపఃప్రభావేణ పశ్యాద్యాపి రఘూద్వహ.

ద్యోతయన్తి దిశస్సర్వాశ్శ్రియా వేద్యోతులప్రభాః৷৷3.74.24৷৷


రఘూద్వహ O Rama, తేషామ్ their, తపఃప్రభావేణ by the power of their penance, అతులప్రభాః matchless brilliance, వేద్యః altars, శ్రియా with glow, అద్యాపి even today, సర్వాః all, దిశః directions, ద్యోతయన్తి filling with light, పశ్య see.

O Rama! see, even now they illuminate the sacrificial altars with the power of their penance. They shed light in all directions with a matchless brilliance.
అశక్నువద్భిస్తైర్గన్తుముపవాసశ్రమాలసైః.

చిన్తితేభ్యాగతాన్పశ్య సహితాన్సప్తసాగరాన్৷৷3.74.25৷৷


ఉపవాసశ్రమాలసైః weariness due to fasting, గన్తుమ్ to move about, అశక్నువద్భిః having no energy, తైః by them, చిన్తితే by mere thought, అభ్యాగతాన్ came towards, సహితాన్ all together, సప్తసాగరాన్ all the seven seas, పశ్య see.

Look at the seven seas, which have reached here at their mere thought as they could not reach them due to fatigue from fasting.
కృతాభిషేకైస్తైర్న్యస్తా వల్కలాః పాదపేష్విహ.

అద్యాపి నావశుష్యన్తి ప్రదేశే రఘునన్దన৷৷3.74.26৷৷


రఘునన్దన delight of the Raghus, ఇహ here, కృతాభిషేకైః after bathing, తై: by them, ప్రదేశే place, పాదపేషు on the trees, న్యస్తాః laid to dry, వల్కలాః bark clothes, అద్యాపి even now, న అవశుష్యన్తి do not get dry still.

O delight of the Raghus ! look at the bark robes spread on the trees to dry after their bathing which are still wet.
దేవకార్యాణి కుర్వద్భిర్యానీమాని కృతాని వై.

పుష్పైఃకువలయైస్సార్ధం మ్లానత్వం నోపయాన్తివై৷৷3.74.27৷৷


దేవకార్యాణి for the worship of gods, కుర్వద్భి: they offered, కువలయైఃసార్ధమ్ along with lotuses and others, పుష్పైః with flowers, యాని all those, కృతాని arranged, ఇమాని all these, మ్లానత్వమ్ wilted, నోపయాన్తి వై do not attain.

The flowers including lotuses offered by the sages while worshipping gods have not yet wilted.
కృత్స్నం వనమిదం దృష్టం శ్రోతవ్యం చ శ్రుతం త్వయా.

తదిచ్ఛామ్యభ్యనుజ్ఞాతా త్యక్తుమేతత్కలేబరమ్৷৷3.74.28৷৷


త్వయా by you, కృత్స్నమ్ entirely, ఇదం వనమ్ this garden, దృష్టమ్ is seen, శ్రోతవ్యమ్ to be heard, శ్రుతం చ it is heard, తత్ that, అభ్యనుజ్ఞాతా with your permission, ఏతత్ this, కలేబరమ్ body, త్యక్తుమ్ to give up, ఇచ్ఛామి I desire to.

You have seen the entire garden and have listened what is to be heard. With your permission I would like to give up this body.
తేషామిచ్ఛామ్యహం గన్తుం సమీపం భావితాత్మనామ్.

మునీనామాశ్రమో యేషామహం చ పరిచారిణీ৷৷3.74.29৷৷


ఆశ్రమః hermitage, యేషాం మునీనామ్ of those seers (to whom this hermitage belongs), అహం చ I, పరిచారిణీ I am a servant, భావితాత్మనామ్ realisers of supreme spirit, తేషామ్ their, సమీపమ్ near, గన్తుమ్ to go, ఇచ్ఛామి I desire.

I wish to reach those realisers of the Supreme Spirit whom I served and to whom this hermitage belonged.
ధర్మిష్ఠం తు వచశ్శ్రుత్వా రాఘవస్సహలక్ష్మణః.

ప్రహర్షమతులం లేభే ఆశ్చర్యమితి తత్త్వతః৷৷3.74.30৷৷


సహలక్ష్మణః along with Lakshmana, రాఘవః Rama, ధర్మిష్ఠమ్ dedicated to dharma, వచః words, శ్రుత్వా hearing, తత్త్వతః truly, ఆశ్చర్యమ్ wonderful, ఇతి thus, అతులమ్ incomparable, ప్రహర్షమ్ happiness, లేభే attained.

Rama and Lakshmana on hearing the pious words of Savari joyfully exclaimed, This is really wonderful.
తామువాచ తతో రామశ్శ్రమణీం సంశితవ్రతామ్.

అర్చితోహం త్వయా భక్త్యా గచ్ఛకామం యథాసుఖమ్৷৷3.74.31৷৷


తతః then, రామః Rama,సంశితవ్రతామ్ determined in her vow, శ్రమణీమ్ female ascetic, ఉవాచ said, అహమ్ I, త్వయా by you, భక్త్యా devotion, అర్చితః worshipped, కామమ్ verily indeed, యథాసుఖమ్ with pleasure, గచ్ఛ you may go.

Looking at Sabari who was steadfast in her vow, Rama said, O ascetic, you have worshipped me with devotion. You may go wherever you like (to the world you desire)
ఇత్యుక్తా జటిలా వృద్ధా చీరకృష్ణాజినామ్బరా.

తస్మిన్ముహూర్తే శబరీ దేహం జీర్ణం జిహాసతీ৷৷3.74.32৷৷

అనుజ్ఞాతా తు రామేణ హుత్వాత్మానం హుతాశనే.

జ్వలత్పావకసఙ్కాశా స్వర్గమేవ జగామ సా৷৷3.74.33৷৷


ఇతి this, ఉక్తా was said, జటిలా a woman of matted locks, వృద్ధా old, చీరకృష్ణాజినామ్బరా woman wearing tattered bark clothes and deer skin, శబరీ Sabari, జీర్ణమ్ emaciated, దేహమ్ body, తస్మిన్ మూహూర్తే at that moment, జిహాసతీ desiring to give up, రామేణ by Rama, అనుజ్ఞాతా permitted, ఆత్మానమ్ herself, హుతాశనే in fire, హుత్వా after offering, జ్వలత్పావకసఙ్కాశా body glittering like fire, స్వర్గమేవ to heaven, జగామ went.

With matted locks, tattered bark clothes and deer skin, Sabari consigned her old and emaciated body to the fire at that moment, with the permission of Rama and ascended to heaven, her body glowing like fire.
దివ్యాభరణసంయుక్తా దివ్యమాల్యానులేపనా.

దివ్యామ్బరధరా తత్ర బభూవ ప్రియదర్శనా৷৷3.74.34৷৷

విరాజయన్తీ తం దేశం విద్యుత్సౌదామినీ యథా.


దివ్యాభరణసంయుక్తా adorned with wonderful ornaments, దివ్యమాల్యానులేపనా wearing beautiful garlands and anointed with fragrant unguents, దివ్యామ్బరధరా robed in most wonderful clothes, విద్యుత్ సౌదామనీ యథా like a streak of lightning, తం దేశమ్ that place, విరాజయన్తీ illuminating, తత్ర there, ప్రియదర్శనా pleasing appearance, బభూవ appeared.

Adorned with wonderful ornaments and beautiful garlands, anointed with fragrant unguents, robed in most beautiful clothes, she appeared like a streak of lightning, her body shining bright and her face contented.
యత్ర తే సుకృతాత్మానో విహరన్తి మహర్షయః৷৷3.74.35৷৷

తత్పుణ్యం శబరీ స్థానం జగామాత్మసమాధినా.


శబరీ Sabari, ఆత్మసమాధినా her meditation, సుకృతాత్మానః who did good deeds, తే మహర్షయః the great sages, యత్ర where, విహరన్తి moved, తత్ that, పుణ్యమ్ sacred, స్థానమ్ holy place, జగామ went.

By virtue of her self-meditation, Sabari went to that sacred world where the holy sages lived because of their good deeds.
ఇత్యార్ష శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అరణ్యకాణ్డే చతుస్సప్తతితమస్సర్గః৷৷
Thus ends the seventyfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
