[Meeting with sage Dharmabrata -- episode of sage Mandakarni and Panchapsara lake -- Rama, Sita and Lakshmana go about living in different hermitages -- arrive at Sutikshna's leave for Agastya's -- story of Ilvala and Vatapi.]

अग्रतः प्रययौ रामस्सीता मध्ये सुमध्यमा।

पृष्ठतस्तु धनुष्पाणिर्लक्ष्मणोऽनुजगाम ह।।3.11.1।।


रामः Rama, अग्रतः in front, प्रययौ walked, सुमध्यमा a lady with a beautiful waist, सीता Sita, मध्ये in the middle, धनुष्पाणिः one holding the bow, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, पृष्ठतः following behind them, अनुजगाम ह followed.

Rama walked in front, Sita with a beautiful waist, in the middle and Lakshmana holding the bow, behind them৷৷
तौ पश्यमानौ विविधान् शैलप्रस्थान्वनानि च।

नदीश्च विविधा रम्या जग्मतुस्सीतया सह।।3.11.2।।


तौ both (Rama and Lakshmana), विविधान् different, शैलप्रस्थान् chains of hills वनानि च and forests too, विविधाः different, रम्याः delightful, नदीश्च rivers, पश्यमानौ seeing, सीतया सह along with Sita, जग्मतुः went.

Both Rama and Lakshmana walked on, accompanied by Sita, watching several beautiful mountain ranges, forests and rivers.
सारसांश्चक्रवाकांश्च नदीपुलिनचारिणः।

सरांसि च सपद्मानि युक्तानि जलजैः खगैः।।3.11.3।।


नदीपुलिनचारिणः roaming the riverbanks, सारसान् swans, चक्रवाकांश्च ruddy geese, सपद्मानि full of lotuses, जलजैः along with aquatic birds in the sky, खगैः with birds, युक्तानि joined
with, सरांसि च lakes also.

(Watching) the swans and ruddy geese on river banks and lakes full of lotuses, and birds on water and in the sky.
यूथबद्धांश्च पृषतान्मदोन्मत्तान् विषाणिनः।

महिषांश्च वराहांश्च नागांश्च द्रुमवैरिणः।।3.11.4।।


यूथबद्धान् in herds, पृषतान् deer, मदोन्मत्तान् intoxicated, विषाणिनः horned animals, महिषांश्च buffaloes, वराहांश्च wild boars, द्रुमवैरिणः enemies of trees, नागांश्च elephants also.

(Watching) herds of deer, intoxicated horned buffaloes, wild boars and elephants who are enemies of trees (elephants uproof trees).
ते गत्वा दूरमध्वानं लम्बमाने दिवाकरे।

ददृशुस्सहिता रम्यं तटाकं योजनायतम्।।3.11.5।।

पद्मपुष्करसम्बाधं गजयूथैरलङ्कृतम्।

सारसैर्हंसकादम्बैस्सङ्कुलं जलचारिभिः।।3.11.6।।


सहिताः together with, ते they, दूरम् distant, अध्वानाम् path, गत्वा having gone, दिवाकरे Sun, लम्बमाने was setting, पद्मपुष्करसम्बाधम् filled with lotuses, गजयूथैः with herds of elephants, अलङ्कृतम् adorned, जलचारिभिः with aquatic animals, सारसैः by cranes, हंस कादम्बैः with flocks of swans, सङ्कुलम् filled with, योजनायतम् spread over a yojana, रम्यम् delightful, तटाकम् tank, ददृशुः saw.

As the Sun was setting, they had covered a long distance, watching a yojanalong tank adorned with lotuses, and crowded with herds of elephants and flocks of cranes, swans and aquatic animals.
प्रसन्नसलिले रम्ये तस्मिन्सरसि शुश्रुवे।

गीतवादित्रनिर्घोषो न तु कश्चन दृश्यते।।3.11.7।।


प्रसन्नसलिले in the clear water, रम्ये in a delightful place, तस्मिन् in that, सरसि lake, गीतवादित्रनिर्घोषः sounds of songs and musical instruments, शुश्रुवे heard, तु but, कश्चन none, न दृश्यते could be seen.

In that lake of clear waters they heard the sounds of songs and musical instruments, while there were none around.
ततः कौतूहलाद्रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः।

मुनिं धर्मभृतं नाम प्रष्टुं समुपचक्रमे।।3.11.8।।


ततः thereafter, रामः Rama, महाबलः of great prowess, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also, कौतूहलात् out of curiosity, धर्मभृतं नाम Dharmabrata by name, मुनिम् to a sage, प्रष्टुम् to enquire, समुपचक्रमे started.

Out of curiosity, mighty Rama, and Lakshmana started enquiring about the matter from sage Dharmabrata by name:
इदमत्यद्भुतं श्रुत्वा सर्वेषां नो महामुने।

कौतूहलं महज्जातं किमिदं साधु कथ्यताम्।।3.11.9।।

वक्तव्यं यदि चेदविप्र नातिगुह्यमपि प्रभो।


महामुने O great sage, अत्यद्भुतम् very wonderful, इदम् this, श्रुत्वा after hearing, सर्वेषाम् for all, नः us, महत् great, कौतूहलम् curiosity, जातम् created, इदम् this, किम् what is this, साधु well, कथ्यताम् please tell us, प्रभो O lord, विप्र O sage, नातिगुह्यमपि यदि चेत् if there is no great secret about this, वक्तव्यम् let it be revealed.

O great sage, this very wonderful sound, has whetted our great curiosity. If there is no top secret about this, do disclose it.
तेनैवमुक्तो धर्मात्मा राघवेण मुनिस्तदा।।3.11.10।।

प्रभवं सरसः कृत्स्नमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे।


तदा then, तेन by that, राघवेण by Rama, एवम् in that way, उक्तः addressed, धर्मात्मा righteous one, मुनिः sage, सरसः of the lake, कृत्स्नम् entire, प्रभवम् origin, अख्यातुम् to narrate, उपचक्रमे started.

Thus addressed by Rama, the righteous sage narrated the entire origin of the lake.
इदं पञ्चाप्सरो नाम तटाकं सार्वकालिकम्।।3.11.11।।

निर्मितं तपसा राम मुनिना माण्डकर्णिना।


राम O Rama, इदम् this, माण्डकर्णिना by Mandakarni, मुनिना by sage, तपसा through penance, निर्मितम् is created, सार्वकालिकम् for all times (to be filled with water), पञ्चाप्सरः नाम by name Panchapsara, तटाकम् lake.

O Rama this lake called Panchapsara filled with water at all times has been created through penance by a sage called Mandakarni.
स हि तेपे तपस्तीव्रं माण्डकर्णिर्महामुनिः।।3.11.12।।

दशवर्षसहस्राणि वायुभक्षो जलाश्रयः।


महामुनिः the great sage, सः that, माण्डकर्णि: Mandakarni, वायुभक्षः living on air, जलाश्रयः standing in water, दशवर्षसहस्राणि for ten thousand years, तीव्रम् intense, तपः penance, तेपे performed.

Great sage Mandakarni standing in water and living on air performed rigorous penance for ten thousand years.
ततः प्रव्यथितास्सर्वे देवास्साग्निपुरोगमाः।।3.11.13।।

अब्रुवन् वचनं सर्वे परस्परसमागताः।


ततः thereafter, साग्निपुरोगमाः with fire god in the forefront, सर्वे all, देवाः deities, प्रव्यथिताः
very much perplexed, सर्वे all, परस्परसमागताः getting together at one place, वचनम् words, अब्रुवन् spoke to one another

Thereafter very much perturbed, all the gods led by Agni gathered together at one place and started deliberating among themselves.
अस्माकं कस्यचित् स्थानमेष प्रार्थयते मुनिः।।3.11.14।।

इति संविग्नमनसस्सर्वे ते त्रिदिवौकसः।


एषः this, मुनिः sage, अस्माकम् our, कस्यचित् of some one, स्थानम् place, प्रार्थयते he is praying for, इति like this, सर्वे all, ते of them, त्रिदिवौकसः gods whose abode is heaven, संविग्नमनसः with agitated minds.

'The gods of heaven became agitated in their minds thinking the sage might usurp one of their places.
तत्र कर्तुं तपोविघ्नं देवैस्सर्वैर्नियोजिताः।।3.11.15।।

प्रधानाप्सरसः पञ्च विद्युच्चलितवर्चसः।


सर्वैः by all, देवैः by gods, तत्र there, तपोविघ्नम् to disturb the penance, कर्तुम् to do, विद्युच्चलितवर्चसः glittering like lightning, पञ्च five, प्रधानाप्सरसः important nymphs नियोजिताः engaged,

All the gods then engaged five of the important nymphs, glittering like lightning, to disturb the penance of the sage.
अप्सरोभिस्ततस्ताभिर्मुनिर्दृष्टपरावरः।।3.11.16।।

नीतो मदनवश्यत्वं सुराणां कार्यसिद्धये।


ततः then, दृष्टपरावरः knower of the inner self and the world of plurality, मुनिः sage, ताभिः all of them, अप्सरोभिः by the apsaras, सुराणाम् of gods, कार्यसिद्धये for the achievement of their target, मदनवश्यत्वम् into the grip of Cupid, नीतः was taken.

The sage, a knower of the inner self and the world of plurality, was gripped by passion for the apsaras, who had come to achieve the target of the gods.
ताश्चैवाप्सरसः पञ्च मुनेः पत्नीत्वमागताः।।3.11.17।।

तटाके निर्मितं तासामस्मिन्नन्तर्हितं गृहम्।


ता: those, पञ्च five, अप्सरसः apsaras, मुनेः sage's, पत्नीत्वम् wifehood, आगताः became, तासाम् for them, गृहम् a home, अस्मिन् in that, तटाके lake, अन्तर्हितम् in invisible manner, निर्मितम् built.

The five apsaras, got the status of wives to the sage who built them an invisible home inside the lake.
तथैवाप्सरसः पञ्च निवसन्त्यो यथासुखम्।।3.11.18।।

रमयन्ति तपोयोगान्मुनिं यौवनमास्थितम्।


तथैव like that, अप्सरसः the apsaras, यथासुखम् happily निवसन्त्य: while living there, तपोयोगात् by the power of penance, यौवनम् youth, आस्थितम् attaining, मुनिम् sage, रमयन्ति are entertaining.

The apsaras lived happily with the sage who remained youthful by virtue of his penance.
तासां सङ्क्रीडमानानामेष वादित्रनिस्स्वनः।।3.11.19।।

श्रूयते भूषणोन्मिश्रो गीतशब्दो मनोहरः।


सङ्क्रीडमानानाम् while playing तासाम् for them, एषः this, वादित्रनिस्स्वनः the sound of musical instruments, भूषणोन्मिश्रः mingled with that of ornaments, मनोहरः pleasing to the ears, गीतशब्दः sound of songs, श्रूयते is heard.

While the apsaras played their musical instruments, their melodious songs mingled
with the sounds of ornaments are heard.
आश्चर्यमिति तस्यैतद्वचनं भावितात्मनः।।3.11.20।।

राघवः प्रतिजग्राह सह भ्रात्रा महायशाः।


महायशाः glorious, राघवः Rama, सह भ्रात्रा with his brother, भावितात्मनः of selfrealised individuals तस्य his, एतत् this, वचनम् word, आश्चर्यमिति as wonderful, प्रतिजग्राह received.

Glorious Rama and his brother heard the wonderful words of the selfrealised sage and exclaimed, 'How strange '
एवं कथयमानस्य ददर्शाश्रममण्डलम्।।3.11.21।।

कुशचीरपरिक्षिप्तं ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या समावृतम्।


एवम् thus, कथयमानस्य narrating, कुशचीरसमाक्षिप्तम् one with kusa grass and bark garments, ब्राह्म्या of brahmin, लक्ष्म्यया with grace, समावृतम् spread all over, आश्रममण्डलम् hermitage, ददर्श saw.

When the sage Dharmabrata was telling the story, Rama saw a hermitage strewn all over with kusa grass and bark garments, and endowed with pure brahminic grace.
प्रविश्य सह वैदेह्या लक्ष्मणेन च राघवः।।3.11.22।।

उवास मुनिभिस्सर्वैः पूज्यमानो महायशाः।


महायशाः renowned, राघवः Rama, वैदेह्या सह accompanied by Vaidehi, लक्ष्मणेन च and also with Lakshmana, प्रविश्य entered, सर्वैः by all, मुनिभिः by sages too, पूज्यमानः were honoured, उवास dwelt.

Illustrious Rama accompanied by Vaidehi and Lakshmana entered the hermitage and, honoured by all the sages, stayed there.
तदा तस्मिन्सकाकुत्थ्सः श्रीमत्याश्रममण्डले।।3.11.23।।

उषित्वा तु सुखं तत्र पूज्यमानो महर्षिभिः।

जगाम चाश्रमांस्तेषां पर्यायेण तपस्विनाम्।।3.11.24।।

येषामुषितवान् पूर्वं सकाशे स महास्त्रवित्।


सः काकुत्थ्सः the scion of the Kakutstha race, तदा then, श्रीमति prosperous तस्मिन् in that, आश्रममण्डले in the hermitage complex, सुखम् comfortably, उषित्वा after living, तत्र there, पूज्यमानः being honoured by the sages, महास्त्रवित् wielder of great weapons, सः he, पूर्वम् earlier, येषाम् whose, सकाशे in the presence, उषितवान् he had resided, तेषाम् their, तपस्विनाम् sages', आश्रमान् hermitages, पर्यायेण in turn, जगाम went round.

Rama, the scion of the Kakutstha race, wielder of great weapons, stayed in that beautiful hermitage, accepting the hospitality of the sages extended with due honour, He visited in turn their penancegroves where he repeated his stay.
क्वचित्परिदशान्मासानेकं संवत्सरं क्वचित्।।3.11.25।।

क्वचिच्छ चतुरो मासान् पञ्च षट्चापरान्क्वचित्।

अपरत्राधिकं मासादप्यर्धमधिकं क्वचित्।।3.11.26।।

त्रीन्मासानष्टमासांश्च राघवो न्यवसत्सुखम्।


राघवः Rama, क्वचित् at one place, परिदशान् about ten, मासान् months, क्वचित् at another hermitage, एकम् one only, संवत्सरम् year, क्वचित् at one place, चतुरः four, मासान् months, क्वचित् at one hermitage, पञ्च five, षट् च six, अपरान् other months, अपरत्र and in another hermitage, मासादपि more than a month, अधिकम् more, क्वचित् at one place, अर्धम् half a month, अधिकम् more, त्रीन् three, मासान् months, अष्टमासान् for eight months, सुखम् comfortably, न्यवसत् dwelt.

Rama lived happily here for about ten months, there one year, here four or five or six months and there over one or half a month or three or eight months in another.
तथा संवसतस्तस्य मुनीनामाश्रमेषु वै।।3.11.27।।

रमतश्चानुकूल्येन ययुस्संवत्सरा दश।


तथा in that way, तस्य for him, आश्रमेषु in the hermitages, वसतः while he was living, रमतश्च and enjoying, दश ten, संवत्सराः years, आनुकूल्येन favourably, ययुः passed.

Thus enjoying their stay in the hermitages, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent ten favourable years.
परिवृत्य च धर्मज्ञो राघवस्सह सीतया।।3.11.28।।

सुतीक्ष्णस्याश्रमं श्रीमान्पुनरेवाजगाम ह।


धर्मज्ञः knower of dharma, श्रीमान् graceful, राघवः Rama, सीतया सह with Sita, परिवृत्य after going round, पुनरेव once again, सुतीक्ष्णस्य Sutikshna's, आश्रमम् hermitage, आजगाम ह returned.

Rama went round who was full of grace and full of knowledge on dharma went round with Sita and came back to Suthikshna's hermitage.
स तमाश्रममासाद्य मुनिभिः प्रतिपूजितः।।3.11.29।।

तत्रापि न्यवसद्रामः कञ्चित्कालमरिन्दमः।


अरिन्दमः subduer of enemies, सः रामः that Rama, तम् that, आश्रमम् hermitage, आसाद्य on reaching, मुनिभिः by sages, प्रतिपूजितः being honoured, तत्रापि there again, कञ्चित्कालम् for some time, न्यवसत् he resided.

On his arrival, Rama, the subduer of enemies, was honoured by the sages at the hermitage where he stayed for a short time.
तदाश्रमस्थो विनयात्कदाचित्तं महामुनिम्।।3.11.30।।

उपासीनस्सकाकुत्स्थस्सुतीक्ष्णमिदमब्रवीत्।


तत् that, आश्रमस्थः staying in the hermitage, काकुत्स्थ: Rama, कदाचित् at one time, महामुनिम् to the great sage, सुतीक्ष्णम् Sutikshna, उपासीनः seated near, विनयात् out of humility, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Once while sitting beside sage Sutikshna at the hermitage Rama humbly addressed him:
अस्मिन्नरण्ये भगवानगस्त्यो मुनिसत्तमः।।3.11.31।।

वसतीति मया नित्यं कथाः कथयतां श्रुतम्।


भगवान् Lord, मुनिसत्तमः best among the sages, अगस्त्यः Agastha, अस्मिन् in this, अरण्ये in the forest, वसतीति is living, नित्यम् always, कथाः incidents, कथयताम् about that, श्रुतम् is heard.

I have heard others saying that lord Agastya, the great sage, lives in this forest.
न तु जानामि तं देशं वनस्यास्य महत्तया।।3.11.32।।

कुत्राश्रमपदं रम्यं महर्षेस्तस्य धीमतः।


तु you, अस्य this, वनस्य forest, महत्तया due to its vastness, तं देशम् that place, न जानामि I do not know, धीमतः of the wise, तस्य महर्षेः of that sage, पुण्यम् sacred, अश्रमपदम् location of hermitage, कुत्र where.

I am unable to locate the sacred hermitage of that sagacious sage due to the vastness of this forest.
प्रसादात्तत्र भवतस्सानुजस्सह सीतया।।3.11.33।।

अगस्त्यमभिगच्छेयमभिवादयितुं मुनिम्।


भवतः your, प्रसादात् by grace, सानुजः with my brother, सह सीतया and along with Sita, मुनिम् sage, अगस्त्यम् Agastya, अभिवादयितुम् to offer our respectful salutations, तत्र there,
अभिगच्छेयम् I wish to go.

By your grace, I wish to go there with Sita and my brother Lakshmana to offer our respectful salutations.
मनोरथो महानेष हृदि मे परिवर्तते।।3.11.34।।

यद्यहं तं मुनिवरं शुश्रूषेयमपि स्वयम्।


तम् to that, मुनिवरम् best of sages, स्वयम् myself, अहम् I, शुश्रूषेयमपि I may serve, यदि that, एषः this, महान् great, मनोरथः desire, मे my, हृदि in the heart, परिवर्तते is being entertained.

There is a great desire in my heart to serve in person the best of sages, Agastya.
इति रामस्य स मुनिश्श्रुत्वा धर्मात्मनो वचः।।3.11.35।।

सुतीक्ष्णः प्रत्युवाचेदं प्रीतो दशरथात्मजम्।


सः that, मुनिः sage, सुतीक्ष्णः Sutikshna, धर्मात्मनः of the righteous one, रामस्य of Rama, इति thus, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, प्रीतः pleased, दशरथात्मजम् to the son of Dasaratha, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Hearing the words of Rama, the righteous son of Dasaratha, sage Sutikshna was pleased to reply:
अहमप्येतदेव त्वां वक्तुकामस्सलक्ष्मणम्।।3.11.36।।

अगस्त्यमभिगच्छेति सीतया सह राघव।


राघव O Rama, अहमपि I also, सलक्ष्मणम् with Lakshmana, त्वाम् you, सीतया सह with Sita, अगस्त्यम् to Agastya, अभिगच्छ you may approach, इति thus, एतदेव that only, वक्तुकामः wished to tell.

I also wished you, O Raghava, to visit Agastya along with Sita and Lakshmana.
दिष्ट्या त्विदानीमर्थेऽस्मिन् स्वयमेव ब्रवीषि माम्।।3.11.37।।

अहमाख्यामि ते वत्स यत्रागस्त्यो महामुनिः।


दिष्ट्या luckily, इदानीम् presently, अस्मिन् in this, अर्थे connection, स्वयमेव yourself personally, माम् to me, ब्रवीषि you are speaking, वत्स dear son, महामुनिः the great sage, अगस्त्य: Agastya, यत्र where, अहम् I, ते to you, आख्यामि I will tell you.

Luckily you have asked me on your own. I will tell you where the great sage Agastya lives.
योजनान्याश्रमात्तात याहि चत्वारि वै ततः।।3.11.38।।

दक्षिणेन महान् श्रीमानगस्त्यभ्रातुराश्रमः।


तात dear child, आश्रमात् from this hermitage, चत्वारि योजनानि four yojanas, (8 x 4 32 miles) याहि you may go, ततः thereafter, दक्षिणेन in southern direction, अगस्त्यभ्रातुः Agastya of the brother of, महान् great, श्रीमान् beautiful, आश्रमः hermitage.

Dear Rama, walk from here a distance of four yojanas. There in the southerly direction stands the great, beautiful hermitage of Agastya's brother.
स्थलप्राये वनोद्देशे पिप्पलीवनशोभिते।।3.11.39।।

बहुपुष्पफले रम्ये नानाशकुनिनादिते।


पिप्पलीवनशोभिते adorned with a fig forest, बहुपुष्पफले with many flowers and fruits, रम्ये in a beautiful, नानाशकुनिनादिते filled with delightful sounds of different birds, स्थलप्राये in mostly plain land, वनोद्देशे in the forest region.

This plain land in the beautiful forest tract is adorned with fig trees,filled with flowers, fruits, and delightful sounds of different birds.
पद्मिन्यो विविधास्तत्र प्रसन्नसलिलाश्शिवाः।।3.11.40।।

हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णाश्चक्रवाकोपशोभिताः।

तत्रैकां रजनीं व्युष्य प्रभाते राम गम्यताम्।।3.11.41।।


तत्र there, प्रसन्नसलिलाः clear water, शिवाः sacred, हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णाः filled with swans and ducks, चक्रवाकोपशोभिताः beautiful with ruddy geese, विविधाः many, पद्मिन्यः lakes full of lotuses, राम O Rama, तत्र there, एकाम् one, रजनीम् night, व्युष्य after spending, प्रभाते early in the morning, गम्यताम् you can go.

O Rama, there are lotusponds filled with clear, sacred waters, with different kinds of swans, ducks and ruddy geese. Spend one night there and proceed early in the morning.
दक्षिणां दिशमास्थाय वनषण्डस्य पार्श्वतः।

तत्रागस्त्याश्रमपदं गत्वा योजनमन्तरा।।3.11.42।।


वनषण्डस्य of the cluster of trees, पार्श्वतः nearby, दक्षिणाम् in southerly, दिशम् direction, आस्थाय after setting out, योजनम् for a yojana, अन्तरा at a distance, गत्वा after going, तत्र there, अगस्त्याश्रमपदम् Agastya's hermitage.

If you go in the southern direction for a yojana you will find Agasthya's hermitage by the side of a cluster of trees.
रमणीये वनोद्धेशे बहुपादपसंवृते।

रंस्यते तत्र वैदेही लक्ष्मणश्च सह त्वया।।3.11.43।।

स हि रम्यो वनोद्देशो बहुपादपसङ्कुलः।


रमणीये enchanting, बहुपादपसङ्कुले full of many trees, तत्र there, वनोद्देशे in the forest tract, वैदेही Sita, लक्ष्मणश्च and Lakshmana too, त्वया सह along with you, रंस्यते will enjoy, बहुपादपसङ्कुलः filled with many trees, सः that, वनोद्देशः forest region, रम्यः delightful, हि will be.

Vaidehi will feel happy in your company in that delightful forest region full of many trees.So too will Lakshmana.
यदि बुद्धिः कृता द्रष्टुमगस्त्यं तं महामुनिम्।।3.11.44।।

अद्यैव गमने बुद्धिं रोचयस्व महायशः।


महायशः O glorious one, महामुनिम् to the great sage, तम् him, अगस्त्यम् to Agastya, द्रष्टुम् to see, बुद्धि: mind, कृता यदि if arises, अद्यैव today itself, गमने in going, बुद्धिम् thought, रोचयस्व may entertain.

O glorious one, if you have made up your mind to visit that great sage Agastya, think of starting today itself.
इति रामो मुनेश्श्रुत्वा सह भ्रात्राभिवाद्य च।।3.11.45।।

प्रतस्थेऽमुद्दिश्य सानुजस्सीतया सह।


रामः Rama, मुनेः sage's, इति this, श्रुत्वा having heard, भ्रात्रा सह with brother, अभिवाद्य च reverentially saluted, सानुजः with his brother, सीतया सह with Sita, अगस्त्यम् Agastya, उद्दिश्य intending to move in that direction, प्रतस्थे moved out.

Rama heard the words of the sage, offered him reverential salutations and set out along with his brother and Sita.
पश्यन्वनानि रम्याणि पर्वतांश्चाभ्रसन्निभान्।।3.11.46।।

सरांसि सरितश्चैव पथि मार्गवशानुगाः।

सुतीक्ष्णेनोपदिष्टेन गत्वा तेन पथा सुखम्।।3.11.47।।

इदं परमसंहृष्टो वाक्यं लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्।


रम्याणि delightful, वनानि forests, अभ्रसन्निभान् looking like clouds, पर्वतांश्च mountains also, सरांसि lakes, पथि on his way, मार्गवशानुगाः moved in that direction, सरितश्च rivers also,
पश्यन् while seeing, सुतीक्ष्णेन by Sutikshna, उपदिष्टेन as indicated, तेन पथा by that path, सुखम् happily, गत्वा after going, परमसंहृष्टः a very happy man, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, इदम् this, वाक्यम् word, अब्रवीत् said.

Enjoying the sight of delightful forests, cloudlike mountains, lakes and rivers on the way, and following the directions given by Sutikshna, Rama was happy. He said to Lakshmana:
एतदेवाश्रमपदं नूनं तस्य महात्मनः।।3.11.48।।

अगस्त्यस्य मुनेर्भ्रातुर्दृश्यते पुण्यकर्मणः।


एतदेव this alone is, महात्मनः of the great one, पुण्यकर्मणः of holy deeds, अगस्त्यस्य मुनेः Sage Agastya's, भ्रातुः brother's, तस्य his, आश्रमपदम् hermitage, दृश्यते is seen, नूनम् surely.

Surely this is the hermitage of great Agastya's brother, a man of holy deeds.
यथा हि मे वनस्यास्य ज्ञाताः पथि सहस्रशः।।3.11.49।।

सन्नताः फलभारेण पुष्पभारेण च द्रुमाः।


पथि on the path, फलभारेण with abundance of fruits, पुष्पभारेण च heavy with flowers, संन्नताः drooping down, सहस्रशः in thousands, अस्य वनस्य of this forest, द्रुमाः trees, यथा हि like that, मे I, ज्ञाताः were informed.

This is the glade we were told about with thousands of trees drooping down with abundant fruits and flowers.
पिप्पलीनां च पक्वानां वनादस्मादुपागतः।।3.11.50।।

गन्धोऽयं पवनोक्षिप्तस्सहसा कटुकोदयः।


सहसा suddenly, पवनोक्षिप्तः wafted by the breeze, कटुकोदयः astringent aroma, पक्वानाम् of the ripe fruits, पिप्पलीनाम् fig trees, अयं गन्धः this smell, अस्मात् from this, वनात् from the forest, उपागतः coming from.

Feel this sudden astringent smell of ripe figs wafted by the breeze from the forest.
तत्र तत्र च दृश्यन्ते सङ्क्षिप्ताः काष्ठसञ्चयाः।।3.11.51।।

लूनाश्च पथि दृश्यन्ते दर्भा वैडूर्यवर्चसः।


तत्र तत्र here and there, सङ्क्षिप्ताः collected, काष्ठसञ्चयाः heaps of firewood, दृश्यन्ते are seen, लूनाः cut, वैडूर्यवर्चसः shining like vaidurya (gems), दर्भाश्च blades of grass (used for sacrifices), पथि दृश्यन्ते are seen on the path.

Heaps of firewood are seen here and there on the path. There are blades of grass (used for sacrificial ceremonies) shining like vaidurya (gems).
एतच्च वनमध्यस्थं कृष्णाभ्रशिखरोपमम्।।3.11.52।।

पावकस्याश्रमस्थस्य धूमाग्रं सम्प्रदृश्यते।


आश्रमस्थस्य on the hermitages, पावकस्य of the fire, कृष्णाभ्रशिखरोपमम् looking like the tip of the dark cloud, वनमध्यस्थम् appearing in the middle of the forest, एतत् this way, धूमाग्रम् smoke, सम्प्रदृश्यते are seen.

In the middle of the forest can be seen like the tip of the dark clouds columns of smoke coming out of the top of hermitages.
विविक्तेषु च तीर्थेषु कृतस्नाना द्विजातयः।।3.11.53।।

पुष्पोपहारं कुर्वन्ति कुसुमैस्स्वयमर्जितै।


विविक्तेषु in solitary places, तीर्थेषु in sacred spots, कृतस्नानाः after taking their bath, द्विजातयः brahmins, स्वयम् by themselves, अर्जितैः collected ones, कुसुमैः flowers, पुष्पोपहारम् offering of flowers, कुर्वन्ति doing.

Priests are coming out of the solitary sacred spots after their bath and making offerings of flowers they had themselves plucked.
तत्सुतीक्ष्णस्य वचनं यथा सौम्य मया श्रुतम्।।3.11.54।।

अगस्त्यस्याश्रमो भ्रातुर्नूनमेष भविष्यति।


सौम्य O handsome one, तत् then, सुतीक्ष्णस्य Sutikshna's, वचनम् word, मया by me, यथा as, श्रुतम् was heard, एषः this, नूनम् surely, अगस्त्यस्य Agastya's, भ्रातुः brother's, आश्रमः hermitage, भविष्यति it will be.

O handsome one, surely this is the hermitage of Agastya's brother about which I heard from Sutikshna.
निगृह्य तपसा मृत्युं लोकानां हितकाम्यया।।3.11.55।।

यस्य भ्रात्रा कृतेयं दिक्छरण्या पुण्यकर्मणा।


यस्य whose, भ्रात्रा by the brother, पुण्यकर्मणा of holy deeds, लोकानाम् for the people, हितकाम्यया desirous of their welfare, तपसा with penance, मृत्युम् death, निगृह्य after controlling, इयम् this, दिक् direction, शरण्या worthy of refuge, कृता is rendered.

धारयन् ब्राह्मणं रूपमिल्वलस्संस्कृतं वदन्।।3.11.56।।

आमन्त्रयति विप्रान्स्मश्राद्धमुद्दिश्य निर्घृणः।


इल्वलः Ilvala, ब्राह्मणम् a brahmin's, रूपम् form, धारायन् taking, संस्कृतम् Sanskrit, वदन् while speaking, निर्घृणः a cruel one, श्राद्धमुद्दिश्य for offering oblations to the dead on the day of anniversary, विप्रान् brahmins, आमन्त्रयति स्म invited.

Assuming the form of a brahmin and using Sanskrit language, Ilvala would invite brahmins for offering shraddha to the dead
भ्रातरं संस्कृतं कृत्वा ततस्तं मेषरूपिणम्।।3.11.57।।

तान् द्विजान्भोजयामास श्राद्धदृष्टेन कर्मणा।


ततः thereafter, मेषरूपिणम् assuming the form of a sheep, तं भ्रातरम् his brother, संस्कृतम् sanctified कृत्वा making, ततः then, श्राद्धदृष्टेन suitable for offering oblations to the dead, कर्मणा did, तान् द्विजान् those brahmins, भोजयामास offered them food.

Ilvala would keep his brother sanctified, so that he is fit for offering, Then he would feed the brahmins with mutton according to the rituals.
ततो भुक्तवतां तेषां विप्राणामिल्वलोऽब्रवीत्।।3.11.59।।

वातापे निष्क्रमन्वेति स्वरेण महता वदन्।


ततः then, तेषां विप्राणाम् when those brahmins, भुक्तवताम् finished eating, इल्वलः Ilvala, महता with a loud, स्वरेण voice, वदन् while shouting, वातापे O Vatapi, निष्क्रमस्व come out, इति thus, अब्रवीत् he spoke.

Then when the brahmins finished eating, Ilvala would call aloud, 'O Vatapi come out'.
ततो भ्रातुर्वचश्श्रुत्वा वातापिर्मेषवन्नदन्।।3.11.60।।

भित्त्वा भित्त्वा शरीराणि ब्राह्मणानां विनिष्पतत्।


ततः then, वातापिः Vatapi, भ्रातुः brother's, वचः voice, श्रुत्वा on hearing, मेषवत् like a sheep, नदन् while bleating, ब्राह्मणानाम् of brahmins, शरीराणि from the bodies, भित्त्वा भित्त्वा tearing out one by one, विनिष्पतत् came out.

Then hearing his brother's voice, Vatapi would bleat like a sheep and jump out, tearing open the bodies of those brahmins.
ब्राह्माणानां सहस्राणि तैरेवं कामरूपिभिः।।3.11.61।।

विनाशितानि संहत्य नित्यशः पिशिताशनैः।


परन्तप O subduer of enemies, ताभ्याम् by both, संहत्य after killing, पिशिताशनैः by those carnivorous, ब्राह्मणानाम् brahmins, सहस्राणि in thousands, एवम् in that way, नित्यशः daily, विनाशितानि killed, तैः कामरूपिभिः by them assuming any form at will.

In this manner, thousands of brahmins used to be killed daily by those carnivorous demons who assumed any form at their free will.
अगस्त्येन तदा देवैः प्रार्थितेन महर्षिणा।।3.11.62।।

अनुभूय किल श्राद्धे भक्षितस्समहासुरः।


तदा then, देवैः by the gods, प्रार्थितेन on being requested, महर्षिणा by the ascetic, अगस्त्येन by Agastya, श्राद्धे in the shraddha, अनुभूय experienced, सः महासुरः that mighty demon, भक्षितः was eaten, किल certainly.

Urged by the gods, Agastya came for the shradda . The mighty demon played the same routine trick and Vatapi, for sure, was eaten by the great sage.
ततस्सम्पन्नमित्युक्त्वा दत्त्वा हस्तोदकं ततः।।3.11.63।।

भ्रातरं निष्क्रमस्वेति चेल्वलस्सोऽभ्यभाषत।


ततः then, सः इल्वलः that Ilvala, सम्पन्नम् the ritual is complete, इति like this, उक्त्वा having said, दत्त्वा giving, निष्क्रमस्व you may come out, इति thus, भ्रातरम् brother, अभ्यभाषत said, ततः after offering, हस्तोदकं water in hand.

Saying, the ritual is complete Ilvala offered water in the palm of Agastya and called his brother to come out.
स तं तथा भाषमाणं भ्रातरं विप्रघातिनम्।।3.11.64।।

अब्रवीत्प्रहसन्धीमानगस्त्यो मुनिसत्तमः।


धीमान् wise, मुनिसत्तमः best among the ascetics, अगस्त्यः Agastya, भ्रातरम् to brother, तथा स like that, भाषमाणम् while he spoke, विप्रघातिनम् destroyer of brahmins, तम् him, प्रहसन् laughing aloud, अब्रवीत् said.

Wise Agastya, the best among the ascetics, laughing aloud, said to Ilvala, the destroyer of brahmins:
कुतो निष्क्रमितुं शक्तिर्मया जीर्णस्य रक्षसः।।3.11.65।।

भ्रातुस्ते मेषरूपस्य गतस्य यमसादनम्।


मया by me, जीर्णस्य digested, रक्षसः of the demon, मेषरूपस्य of the form of a sheep, यमसादनम् to the abode of Yama (lord of death), गतस्य one who has gone, ते भ्रातुः your brother, निष्क्रमितुम् to come out, शक्तिः power, कुतः where from.

I have digested the demon Vatapi your brother, who assumed the form of a sheep. He has reached the abode of Yama, Lord of death. Where does he have the power to come out?
अथ तस्य वचश्श्रुत्वा भ्रातुर्निधनसंश्रयम्।।3.11.66।।

प्रधर्षयितुमारेभे मुनिं क्रोधान्निशाचरः।


अथ and then, भ्रातुः brothers, निधनसंश्रयम् pertaining to death, तस्य his, वचः words, श्रुत्वा
having heard, निशाचरः demon, क्रोधात् angrily, प्रधर्षयितुम् to attack, आरेभे started.

On hearing the news of the death of his brother, the demon Ilvala, out of anger, started attacking the sage.
सोऽभिद्रवन्मुनिश्रेष्ठं मुनिना दीप्ततेजसा।।3.11.67।।

चक्षुषानलकल्पेन निर्दग्धो निधनं गतः।


सः that (Ilvala), मुनिश्रेष्ठम् best among the sages, अभ्यद्रवत् pounced upon, दीप्ततेजसा by him whose lustre was kindled, मुनिना sage, अनलकल्पेन by firelike, चक्षुषा eyes, निर्दग्धः burnt, निधनं गतः died.

Ilvala who pounced upon Agastya, the best among the sages whose lustre lay consumed by the fire of his eyes which were in flames.
तस्यायमाश्रमो भ्रातुस्तटाकवनशोभितः।।3.11.68।।

विप्रानुकम्पया येन कर्मेदं दुष्करं कृतम्।


तटाकवनशोभितः adorned with lakes and forests, अयम् this, येन by whom, विप्रानुकम्पया congenial to brahmins, इदम् this, दुष्करम् difficult, कर्म action, कृतम् is done, तस्य his, भ्रातुः brothers, आश्रम: hermitage.

This hermitage surrounded by beautiful lakes and forests belongs to his brother (Sudarsana). Out of sympathy for Agastya, he has accomplished this difficult task.
एवं कथयमानस्य तस्य सौमित्रिणा सह।

रामस्यास्तं गतस्सूर्यस्सन्ध्याकालोऽभ्यवर्ततः।।3.11.69।।


तस्य रामस्य of Rama, सौमित्रिणा सह along with Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, कथयमानस्य as he was narrating, सूर्यः Sun, अस्तं गतः had set, सन्ध्याकालः evening time, अभ्यवर्तत had set in.

While Rama was thus narrating to Lakshmana (the story of Agastya), the Sun set and evening closed in.
उपास्य पश्चिमां सन्ध्यां सह भ्रात्रा यथाविधि।

प्रविवेशाऽश्रमपदं तमृषिं सोऽभ्यवादयत्।।3.11.70।।


सः that Rama, सह भ्रात्रा with his brother, यथाविधि as per rule, पश्चिमाम् western, सन्ध्याम् at twilight, उपास्य offered oblations, आश्रमपदम् to the hermitage, विवेश entered, तम् that, ऋषिम् to the sage, अभ्यवादयत् greeted with folded palms.

Rama with his brother Lakshmana duly offered oblations at twilight, entered the hermitage and greeted the sage (Sudarsana) with folded palms.
सम्यक् प्रतिगृहीतश्च मुनिना तेन राघवः।

न्यवसत्तां निशामेकां प्राश्य मूलफलानि च।।3.11.71।।


राघवः Rama, तेन मुनिना by that sage, सम्यक् properly, प्रतिगृहीतः was received, मूलफलानि roots and fruits, प्राश्य after eating, ताम् that, एकाम् one, निशाम् night, न्यवसत् spent.

Warmly received by the sage, Rama shared the roots and fruits and slept the night there.
तस्यां रात्य्रां व्यतीतायां विमले सूर्यमण्डले।

भ्रातरं तमगस्त्यस्य ह्यामन्त्रयत राघवः।।3.11.72।।


तस्यां रात्य्राम् when that night, व्यतीतायाम् was spent, सूर्यमण्डले when the Sun's orb, विमले was bright, राघवः Rama, अगस्त्यस्य Agasthya's, भ्रातरम् brother, तम् him, आमन्त्रयत bid him farewell.

When the night passed and the Sun became bright, Rama took leave of the brother of Agastya.
अभिवादये त्वां भगवन् सुखमध्युषितो निशाम्।

आमन्त्रये त्वां गच्छामि गुरुं ते द्रष्टुमग्रजम्।।3.11.73।।


भगवन् O lord , निशाम् night, सुखम् comfortably, अध्युषितः wellspent, त्वाम् you, अभिवादये I bow down, त्वाम् you, आमन्त्रये I seek your permission to leave, ते that, गुरुम् respectable one, अग्रजम् elder brother, द्रष्टुम् to see, गच्छामि I will go.

O Lord, the night has been wellspent. Now we humbly seek leave of you to see your respectable elder brother.
गम्यतामिति तेनोक्तो जगाम रघुनन्दनः।

यथोद्दिष्टेन मार्गेण वनं तच्चावलोकयन्।।3.11.74।।


गम्यताम् you may go, इति like this तेन by him, उक्तः said, रघुनन्दनः Rama, the delight of the Raghu dynasty, तत् that, वनम् forest, अवलोकयन् watching, यथोद्दिष्टेन in the indicated direction, मार्गेण path, जगाम went.

With his permission, Rama, the delight of the Raghu race, proceeded along the path indicated, watching (the beauty of) the forest.
नीवारान्पनसांस्तालांस्तिमिशान्वञ्चुलान्धवान्।

चिरिबिल्वान्मधूकांश्च बिल्वानपि च तिन्दुकान्।।3.11.75।।


नीवारान् unvcultivated ricefields, पनसान् jackfruit trees, तालान् palmyra trees, तिमिशान् timishas, वञ्जुलान् ashoka, धवान् trees with white flowers, चिरिबिल्वान् trees existing for a long time, मधूकांश्च mahva trees, बिल्वानपि च and bilva trees, तिन्दुकान् tindukas.

They passed by wild rice fields, jackfruit trees, palmyra and various other trees like Ashoka, trees with white flowers, old trees that existed for a long time, mahva trees, bilva trees and tindukas.
पुष्पितान्पुष्पिताग्राभिर्लताभिरनुवेष्टितान्।

ददर्श रामश्शतशस्तत्र कान्तारपादपान्।।3.11.76।।

हस्तिहस्तैर्विमृदितान्वानरैरुपशोभितान्।

मत्तैश्शकुनिसङ्घैश्च शतशश्च प्रणादितान्।।3.11.77।।


रामः Rama, हस्तिहस्तैः trunks of elephants, विमृदितान् crushed, वानरैः by monkeys, उपशोभितान् splendidlooking, मत्तै intoxicated, शतशः in hundreds, शकुनि सङ्गैश्च by flocks of birds, प्रणादितान् echoed, पुष्पितान् पुष्पिताग्राभिः flowers in bloom on top of trees, लताभिः by creepers, अनुवेष्टितान् surrounded by, शतशः hundreds, कान्तारपादपान् trees of the forest, ददर्श saw.

Rama saw hundreds of trees crushed by the trunks of elephants and by monkeys. He saw some trees echoing with notes of hundreds of intoxicated birds. He saw tree tops coiled with creepers in full bloom.
ततोऽब्रवीत्समीपस्थं रामो राजीवलोचनः।

पृष्ठतोऽनुगतं वीरं लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिवर्धनम्।।3.11.78।।


ततः then, राजीवलोचनः lotuseyed, रामः Rama, पृष्ठतः behind, अनुगतम् following, वीरम् chivalrous one, लक्ष्मिवर्धनम् one who enhances grace by his company, समीपस्थम् who stood nearby, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said.

Then the lotuseyed Rama said to the chivalrous, graceful Lakshmana who stood behind him:
स्निग्धपत्रा यथा वृक्षा यथा क्षान्ता मृगद्विजाः।

आश्रमो नातिदूरस्थो महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः।।3.11.79।।


वृक्ष्याः trees, यथा here, स्निग्धपत्राः having glossy leaves, मृगद्विजाः animals and birds, यथा as, क्षान्ताः peaceful, भावितात्मनः of the selfrealised one. महर्षेः of the great sage, आश्रमः hermitage, नातिदूरस्थः not very far.

The leaves of the trees here are glossy, the animals and birds are peaceful. It appears the hermitage of the selfrealized great sage Agastya is not very far from here.
अगस्त्य इति विख्यातो लोके स्वेनैव कर्मणा।

आश्रमो दृश्यते तस्य परिश्रान्तश्रमापहः।।3.11.80।।


स्वेन by his, कर्मणा by deeds, लोके among people, अगस्त्यः as Agastya, इति thus, विख्यातः wellknown, तस्य his, परिश्रान्तश्रमापहः place of rest for those who are tired with hard work, आश्रमः hermitage, दृश्यते is seen.

Here is the hermitage of Agastya, wellknown in the world for his deeds a place of rest for those tired with hard work.
प्राज्यधूमाकुलवनश्चीरमालापरिष्कृतः।

प्रशान्तमृगयूथश्च नानाशकुनिनादितः।।3.11.81।।


प्राज्यधूमाकुलवनः forest enveloped with smoke rising from the sacrificial altar, चीरमालापरिष्कृत: lined with rows of bark robes, प्रशान्तमृगयूथश्च with herds of quiet animals, नानाशकुनिनादितः resounding with notes of different kinds of birds.

This forest is enveloped with the smoke rising from the sacrificial altar. There are rows of bark robes hanging. Herds of quiet animals lying and different kind of birds chirping around.
तस्येदमाश्रमपदं प्रभावाद्यस्य राक्षसैः।

दिगियं दक्षिणा त्रासाद्दृश्यते नोपभुज्यते।।3.11.82।।


यस्य by whose, प्रभावात् by his power, राक्षसैः by the demons, इयम् this, दक्षिणा दिक् southern side, त्रासात् out of fear, दृश्यते is seen, नोपभुज्यते cannot be enjoyed, तस्य that Agastya's, आश्रमपदम् hermitage, इदम् this is.

This is his hermitage. On account of his (Agastya's) impact the demons look south but cannot eat the hermits out of fear (for the sage).
यदा प्रभृति चाक्रान्ता दिगियं पुण्यकर्मणा।

तदा प्रभृति निर्वैराः प्रशान्ता रजनीचराः।।3.11.83।।


यदा प्रभृति since, पुण्यकर्मणा by a man of sacred deeds, इयं दिक् this direction, आक्रान्ता occupied, तदाप्रभृति from then on, रजनीचराः those who move about at night, the demons, निर्वैराः leaving enmity, प्रशान्ताः are quiet.

Since the time Agastya of sacred deeds occupied this direction the demons are quiet, leaving all enmity.
नाम्ना चेयं भगवतो दक्षिणा दिक्प्रदक्षिणा।

प्रथिता त्रिषु लोकेषु दुर्धर्षा क्रूरकर्मभिः।।3.11.84।।


प्रदक्षिणा very considerate place, इयम् दक्षिणा दिक् on the southern side, भगवतः of the Lord (Agastya's), नाम्ना by name, त्रिषु in three, लोकेषु worlds, प्रथिता famous, क्रूरकर्मभिः by men of wicked deeds, दुर्धर्षा unassailable.

The southern side favourable to the people was famous by the name Agastya in the three worlds and stood unassailable to the demons.
मार्गं निरोद्धुं निरतो भास्करस्याचलोत्तमः।

निदेशं पालयन्यस्य विन्ध्यशैला न वर्धते।।3.11.85।।

अयं दीर्घायुषस्तस्य लोके विश्रुतकर्मणः।

अगस्त्यस्याश्रम श्रीमान्विनीतजनसेवितः।।3.11.86।।


श्रीमान् beautiful, विनीतजनसेवितः served by humble people, अयम् this, भास्करस्य Sun's, मार्गम् path, निरोद्धम् to obstruct, निरतः was ever bent upon, अचलोत्तमः that great mountain, विन्ध्य
Vindhya, यस्य whose, निदेशम् order, पालयन् obeying, न वर्धते does not grow, तस्य for him, लोके in this world, विश्रुतकर्मणः of a man of renowned deeds, दीर्घायुषः of long life, अगस्त्यस्य Agastya's, आश्रमः hermitage.

This is the hermitage of the longlived Agastya who is renowned for his deeds and is served by humble people. The great mountain Vindhya that was growing incessantly and obstructing the path of the Sun stopped growing any more in obedience to Agastya's words.
एष लोकार्चितस्साधुर्हिते नित्यरतस्सताम्।

अस्मानभिगतानेष श्रेयसा योजयिष्यति।।3.11.87।।


लोकार्चितः worshipped by the people, साधुः a pious man, एषः he, सताम् हिते in the wellbeing of the virtuous, नित्यरतः ever engaged, एषः such, अभिगतान् those who have come, अस्मान् to us, श्रेयसा with welfare, योजयिष्यति will unite.

We are going to join this sage honoured by the people of the world and ever engaged in the welfare of the virtuous. This augurs well for us.
आराधयिष्याम्यत्राहमगस्त्यं तं महामुनिम्।

शेषं च वनवासस्य सौम्य वत्स्याम्यहं प्रभो।।3.11.88।।


प्रभो O noble one, अहम् I, अत्र here, तम् him, महामुनिम् to the great ascetic, अगस्त्यम् to Agastya, आराधयिष्यामि I will worship, वनवासस्य while living in the forest, शेषम् rest of the period, सौम्य O handsome, अहम् वत्स्यामि I will spend.

O noble, handsome Lakshmana, I will spend the rest of the exile in this forest in the worship of the great sage Agastya.
अत्र देवास्सगन्धर्वास्सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः।

अगस्त्यं नियताहारं सततं पर्युपासते।।3.11.89।।


सगन्धर्वाः with gandharvas, देवाः the gods, सिद्धाश्च siddhas, परमर्षयः great sages, अत्र here, नियताहारम् controlled diet, अगस्त्यम् to Agastya's, सततम् always, पर्युपासते keep serving.

The gods along with gandharvas, siddhas and great sages always serve Agastya, observing discipine in their food habits.
नात्र जीवेन्मृषावादी क्रूरो वा यदि वा शठः।

नृशंसः कामवृत्तो वा मुनिरेष तथाविधः।।3.11.90।।


मृषावादी a liar, क्रूरो वा or a cruel one, यदि वा or perhaps, शठः a deceitful person, नृशंसः a wicked person, कामवृत्तो वा or a lustful person, अत्र here, न जीवेत् will not live, एषः मुनिः this sage, तथाविधः of such type.

This sage is such type that he (his spiritual power) will not allow a liar or a cruel man or a deceitful or lustful or wicked person to thrive here.
अत्र देवाश्च यक्षाश्च नागाश्च पतगैस्सह।

वसन्ति नियताहारा धर्ममाराधयिष्णवः।।3.11.91।।


देवाश्च gods also, यक्षाश्च yakshas too, पतगैस्सह along with birds, नागाश्च nagas too, नियताहाराः of controlled diet, धर्मम् righteous path, आराधयिष्णवः those who practise, अत्र here, वसन्ति live.

Here gods, yakshas, nagas and birds live, following the righteous path and observing discipline in food habits.
अत्र सिद्धा महात्मानो विमानैजस्सूर्यसन्निभैः।

त्यक्तदेहा नवैर्देहैः स्वर्याताः परमर्षयः।।3.11.92।।


अत्र here, महात्मानः great souls, परमर्षयः great sages, अत्र here, सिद्धाः siddhas, त्यक्तदेहाः giving up their bodies, नवैः with new, देहैः bodies, सूर्यसन्निभैः shining like the Sungod, विमानैः aerochariot, स्वर्याताः went to heaven.

Here great souls like sages and siddhas gave up the ghost and with renewed bodies left for heaven on aerochariot resembling the Sun (in brightness).
यक्षत्वममरत्वं च राज्यानि विविधानि च।

अत्र देवाः प्रयच्छन्ति भूतैराराधिताश्शुभैः।।3.11.93।।


शुभैः by benevolent ones, भूतैः by beings, अत्र here, आराधिताः those who are worshipped, देवाः gods, यक्षत्वम् status of demigods, अमरत्वं च status of gods, विविधानि several kinds of, राज्यानि च kingdoms also, प्रयच्छन्ति will endow.

Worshipped by benevolent beings, the gods here bestow on them the status of demigods or of the immortals or several kinds of kingdoms.
