[Surpanakha meets Ravana at Lanka -- describes Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to Ravana.]

ततश्शूर्पणखा दृष्ट्वा सहस्राणि चतुर्दश।

हतान्येकेन रामेण रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्।।3.32.1।।

दूषणं च खरं चैव हतं त्रिशिरसा सह।

दृष्ट्वा पुनर्महानादं ननाद जलदो यथा।।3.32.2।।


ततः thereafter, शूर्पणखा Surpanakha, एकेन alone, रामेण by Rama, भीमकर्मणाम् of terrible deeds, रक्षसाम् of demons चतुर्दशसहस्राणि fourteen thousand, हतानि killed, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, दूषणं च and Dusana, खरं चैव also Khara, त्रिशिरसा सह including Trisira, हतम् killed, दृष्ट्वा seeing, पुनः again, जलदः यथा like a cloud, महानादम् great noise, ननाद produced.

Seeing Dusana, Khara and also Trisira along with the fourteen thousand demon warriors of terrific performance killed by Rama, singlehanded, Surpanakha roared like a cloud.
सा दृष्ट्वा कर्म रामस्य कृतमन्यैस्सुदुष्करम्।

जगाम परमोद्विग्ना लङ्कां रावणपालिताम्।।3.32.3।।


सा she, अन्यैः by others, सुदुष्करम् very difficult to do, रामस्य Rama's, कृतम् done, कर्म deed, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, परमोद्विग्ना getting very scared, रावणपालिताम् a placed ruled by Ravana, लङ्काम् Lanka, जगाम went.

Seeing the performance of Rama which is very difficult for others, Surpanakha got scared and went to Lanka, ruled by Ravana.
सा ददर्श विमानाग्रे रावणं दीप्ततेजसम्।

उपोपविष्टं सचिवैर्मरुद्भिरिव वासवम्।।3.32.4।।


सा Surpanakha, मरुद्भि: with Maruts, वासवम् इव like Indra, सचिवैः with ministers, उपोपविष्टम् seated, दीप्ततेजसम् shining brilliantly, रावणम् to Ravana, विमानाग्रे on top of the aerial chariot, ददर्श saw.

Surpanakha saw Ravana shining brilliantly, seated like Indra along with ministers and Maruts on top of the aerial chariot.
आसीनं सूर्यसङ्काशे काञ्चने परमासने।

रुक्मवेदिगतं प्राज्यं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम्।।3.32.5।।


सूर्यसङ्काशे radiating like the Sun, काञ्चने golden, परमासने on a magnificent seat, आसीनम् seated, रुक्मवेदिगतम् at the golden altar, प्राज्यम् ज्वलन्तम् blazing, पावकम् इव like fire.

Ravana, sitting on the magnificent golden seat on a golden altar looked radiant like the Sun or the blazing fire.
देवगन्धर्वभूतानामृषीणां च महात्मनाम्।

अजेयं समरे शूरं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम्।।3.32.6।।


देवगन्धर्वभूतानाम् of gods, gandharvas, all living beings, महात्मनाम् of great sages, ऋषीणां च and seers, समरे in war, अजेयम् invincible, शूरम् warrior, व्यात्ताननम् wide open jaws, अन्तकम् इव like Yama, lord of death.

Invincible to gods, gandharvas, all living beings, great sages and seers, he was like Yama, lord of death with wide open jaws.
देवासुरविमर्देषु वज्राशनिकृतव्रणम्।

ऐरावतविषाणग्रैरुद्घृष्टकिणवक्षसम्।।3.32.7।।


देवासुरविमर्देषु in encounter between gods and demons, वज्राशनिकृतव्रणम् wounded by missiles and thunderbolts, ऐरावतविषाणाग्रैः by the tips of the tusks of elephant Airavata, उद्धृष्टकिणवक्षसम् marks of scars on the chest.

He had scars of wounds caused by the thunderbolt received in war between gods and demons, and marks of scars on his chest made by tips of the the tusks of elephant Airavata.
विंशद्भुजं दशग्रीवं दर्शनीयपरिच्छदम्।

विशालवक्षसं वीरं राजलक्षण शोभितम्।।3.32.8।।


विंशद्भुजम् with twenty arms, दशग्रीवम् ten heads, दर्शनीयपरिच्छदम् attractive attire, विशालवक्षसम् broadchested वीरम् valiant , राजलक्षण शोभितम् with royal marks.

Valiant Ravana had an attractive appearance with beautiful dresses twenty arms,ten heads, a broad chest and brilliant royal marks.
स्निग्धवैडूर्यसङ्काशं तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलम्।

सुभुजं शुक्लदशनं महास्यं पर्वतोपमम्।।3.32.9।।


स्निग्धवैडूर्यसंकाशम् comparable to glittering vaiduryas, तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलम् wearing bright burnished golden earrings, सुभुजम् strong arms, शुक्लदशनम् with white teeth, महास्यम् wide mouth, पर्वतोपम् like a mountain.

Wearing burnished golden earrings, he looked bright like the glittering vaidurya. And with his wellformed arms, white teeth and wide mouth, he looked like a mountain.
विष्णुचक्रनिपातैश्च शतशो देवसंयुगे।

अन्यैश्शस्त्रप्रहारैश्च महायुद्धेषु ताडितम्।।3.32.10।।


देवसंयुगे while in war with gods, शतश: in hundreds विष्णुचक्रनिपातैश्च hit with the wheel of Visnu, महायुद्धेषु in great wars, अन्यैः by others, शस्त्रप्रहारैश्च hit by several weapons, ताडितम्
beaten.

He was hit by the wheel of Visnu for hundreds of times during great wars and beaten by other weapons.
अहताङ्गं समस्तैश्च देवप्रहरणैस्तथा।

अक्षोभ्याणां समुद्राणां क्षोभणं क्षिप्रकारिणम्।।3.32.11।।


तथा so also, समस्तै: by all, देवप्रहरणैः with the striking weapons of gods, अहताङ्गम् one whose limbs are not hurt, अक्षोभ्याणाम् of the imperturbable, समुद्राणाम् of the seas, क्षोभणम् one who causes agitation, क्षिप्रकारिणम् quick in action.

Ravana whose body was not hurt by the weapons in war with gods, who could perturb even the imperturbable seas, was quick in action.
क्षेप्तारं पर्वतेन्द्राणां सुराणां च प्रमर्दनम्।

उच्छेत्तारं च धर्माणां परदाराभिमर्शनम्।।3.32.12।।


पर्वतेन्द्राणाम् of great mountains, क्षेप्तारम् who threw, सूराणां च of even gods, प्रमर्दनम् tormentor, धर्माणाम् of dharmas, उच्छेत्तारम् destroyer at the root, परदाराभिमर्शनम् one who casts evil eye on the wives of others.

(He was) one who could lift and throw great mountains, torment even gods, violate dharma at the root, and cast an evil eye on the wives of others.
सर्वदिव्यास्त्रयोक्तारं यज्ञविघ्नकरं सदा।

पुरीं भोगवतीं प्राप्य पराजित्य च वासुकिम्।।3.32.13।।

तक्षकस्य प्रियां भार्यां पराजित्य जहार यः।


सर्वदिव्यास्त्रयोक्तारम् employ all divine weapons, सदा always, यज्ञविघ्नकरम् one who creates obstacles for sacrifices, यः such, भोगवतीम् to the city of Bhogavati, पुरीम् city, प्राप्य
having reached, वासुकिम् Vasuki the sepentking, पराजित्य च having defeated, तक्षकस्य Takshaka's, प्रियाम् dear, भार्याम् wife, पराजित्य having defeated, जहार abducted.

He who could employ all divine weapons, disrupt sacrifices, had gone to the city of Bhogavati, defeated Vasuki and abducted the dear wife of Takshaka.
कैलासपर्वतं गत्वा विजित्य नरवाहनम्।

विमानं पुष्पकं तस्य कामगं वै जहार यः।।3.32.14।।


यः such (Ravana), कैलासपर्वतम् mount Kailasa, गत्वा on going, नरवाहनम् Kubera, विजित्य having conquered, तस्य his, कामगम् which can fly at the rider's desire, पुष्पकम् aerial chariot called Pushpaka, जहार took away forcibly.

Ravana went to mount Kailasa, conquered Kubera and took away forcibly his aerial chariot Pushpaka which can fly as per the rider's desire
वनं चैत्ररथं दिव्यं नलिनीं नन्दनं वनम्।

विनाशयति यः क्रोधाद्देवोद्यानानि वीर्यवान्।।3.32.15।।


वीर्यवान् valiant, यः he was, चैत्ररथम् Chaitraratha, the garden of Kubera, वनम् garden, नलिनीम् lotuspond, नन्दनं वनम् pleasure garden of Indra, देवोद्यानानि gardens of gods, क्रोधात् with anguish, विनाशयति destroyed.

Out of anger he destroyed all the gardens of gods like Chitraratha of Kubera full of lotusponds and Nandana, the pleasuregarden of Indra.
चन्द्रसूर्यौ महाभागावुत्तिष्ठन्तौ परन्तपौ।

निवारयति बाहुभ्यां यश्शैलशिखरोपमः।।3.32.16।।


परन्तपौ scorcher of enemies, शैलशिखरोपमः like the peak of a mountain, महाभागौ of great prowess, चन्द्रसूर्यौ Moon and Sun, बाहुभ्याम् with his arms, निवारयति prevents, उत्तिष्ठन्तौ while they rise.

He was like the peak of a mountain. He could stop with his arms the great Moon and Sun from rising. He was a scorcher of enemies.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि तपस्तप्वा महावने।

पुरा स्वयंभुवे धीरश्शिरांस्युपजहार यः।।3.32.17।।


धीरः steadfast, यः who, पुरा in the past, महावने in a dense forest, दशवर्षसहस्राणि ten thousand years, तपः penance, तप्त्वा after performing, स्वयंभुवे to the Creator, शिरांसि heads, उपजहार offered.

This steadfast Ravana who had in the past performed penance for ten thousand years in a dense forest offered his heads to the selfborn Brahma.
देवदानवगन्धर्वपिशाचपतगोरगैः।

अभयं यस्य सङ्ग्रामे मृत्युतो मानुषादृते।।3.32.18।।


यस्य for whom, सङ्ग्रामे in war, मानुषात् ऋते except by humans, देवदानवगन्धर्वपिशाचपतगोरगैः by gods, demons, gandharvas, pisachas birds and snakes, मृत्युतः death, अभयम् fearless.

He was unafraid of death in the hands of gods or demons or gandharvas or pisachas or birds or snakes in war except humans.
मन्त्रैरभिष्टुतं पुण्यमध्वरेषु द्विजातिभिः।

हविर्धानेषु यस्सोममुपहन्ति महाबलः।।3.32.19।।


महाबलः mighty, यः he, अध्वरेषु during sacrifices, हविर्धानेषु at places fit for offering oblations, द्विजातिभिः by brahmins, अभिष्टुतम् extracted, मन्त्रै: by chanting Vedic hymns, पुण्यम् sacred, सोमम् Soma juice, उपहन्ति made impure.

The mighty Ravana defiled the sacred Soma juice, worthy of oblations, extracted by
Brahmins by chanting mantras in scrifices.
आप्तयज्ञहरं क्रूरं ब्रह्मघ्नं दुष्टचारिणम्।

कर्कशं निरनुक्रोशं प्रजानामहिते रतम्।।3.32.20।।


आप्तयज्ञहरम् a disrupter of sacrifices at the climax, क्रूरम् a cruel one, ब्रह्मघ्नम् destroyer of brahmins, दुष्टचारिणम् one of ruthless conduct, कर्कशम् a harsh one, निरनुक्रोशम् a merciless one, प्रजानाम् towards people, अहिते against their welfare, रतम् involved.

He disrupted sacrifices at the final stage. He killed brahmins. He was ruthless, harsh, and merciless. He was involved in activities against human welfare.
रावणं सर्वभूतानां सर्वलोकभयावहम्।

राक्षसी भ्रातरं शूरं सा ददर्श महाबलम्।।3.32.21।।


सा that, राक्षसी demoness i, सर्वभूतानाम् of all beings, रावणम् one who makes others cry, सर्वलोकभयावहम् creates fear among all beings, शूरम् a valiant, महाबलम् very strong, भ्रातरम् brother, ददर्श saw.

That demoness , Surpanakha saw her very strong,valiant brother Ravana who made all beings cry and created fear in all worlds
तं दिव्यवस्त्राभरणं दिव्यमाल्योपशोभितम्।

आसने सूपविष्टं च कालकालमिवोद्यतम्।।3.32.22।।


दिव्यवस्त्राभरणम् resplendently attired and adorned with jewels, दिव्यमाल्योपशोभितम् wearing beautiful garlands, आसने on the seat, सूपविष्टम् well seated, उद्यतम् on an elevated throne, कालकालमिव like death even to the lord of death, तम् him.

Resplendently attired, adorned with jewels, wearing beautiful gardlands, seated on a raised throne, he(Ravana) was like death to even the lord of death
राक्षसेन्द्रं महाभागं पौलस्त्यकुलनन्दनम्। 3.32.23।।

रावणं शत्रुहन्तारं मन्त्रिभिः परिवारितम्।

अभिगम्याब्रवीद्वाक्यं राक्षसी भयविह्वला।।3.32.24।।


राक्षसी demoness, भयविह्वला terrified, राक्षसेन्द्रम् lord of demons, महाभागम् of great prowess, पौलस्त्यकुलनन्दनम् delight of the Paulastya race, शत्रुहन्तारम् destroyer of enemies, मन्त्रिभिः by ministers, परिवारितम् surrounded, रावणम् Ravana, अभिगम्य after reaching, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

On reaching Ravana, the lord of demons, the delight of the Paulastya dynasty, and the destroyer of enemies surrounded by ministers, the terrified, Surpanakha said these words:
तमब्रवीद्दीप्तविशाललोचनं प्रदर्शयित्वा भयमोहमूर्छिता।

सुदारुणं वाक्यमभीतचारिणी महात्मना शूर्पणखा विरूपिता।।3.32.25।।


अभीतचारिणी fearless wanderer, महात्मना great Lakshmana, विरूपिता disfigured, शूर्पणखा Surpanakha, भयमोहमूर्छिता overcome by fear, प्रदर्शयित्वा showing, दीप्तविशाललोचनम् of large, glittering eyes, तम् him, सुदारुणम् cruel, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Showing her body disfigured by great Lakshmana, Surpanakha, the fearless wanderer, overwhelmed with fear said these cruel words to Ravana sitting with large, glittering eyes:
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे द्वात्रिंशस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the thirtysecond sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
