[Rama and Lakshmana reach Pampa-- admire the beautiful nature on the banks of Pampa.]

दिवं तु तस्यां यातायां शबर्यां स्वेन तेजसा।

लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा चिन्तयामास राघवः।।3.75.1।।


तस्याम् when she, शबर्याम् Sabari, स्वेन तेजसा by her own brilliance, दिवम् heavens, यातायाम् on departing, राघवः Rama, भ्रात्रा with his brother, लक्ष्मणेन सह with Lakshmana, चिन्तयामास contemplated.

When Sabari departed for heaven with her brilliance, Rama contemplated (about the power of sages)with Lakshmana.
स चिन्तयित्वा धर्मात्मा प्रभावं तं महात्मनाम्।

हितकारिणमेकाग्रं लक्ष्मणं राघवोऽब्रवीत्।।3.75.2।।


धर्मात्मा righteous, सः राघवः Rama, महात्मनाम् of great sages, प्रभावम् power, चिन्तयित्वा on thinking over, हितकारिणम् his wellwisher, एकाग्रम् with singleminded devotion, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said.

Thinking about the power of the great sages, righteous Rama said to Lakshmana, his wellwisher with singleminded devotion:
दृष्टोऽयमाश्रमस्सौम्य बह्वाश्चर्यो महात्मनाम्।

विश्वस्तमृगशार्दूलो नानाविहगसेवितः।।3.75.3।।


सौम्य O handsome one महात्मनाम् of the great sages, बह्वाश्चर्यः very wonderful, विश्वस्तमृगशार्दूलः deer and tigers live together with implicit faith, नानाविहगसेवितः where birds of all kinds dwell, अयम् आश्रमः this hermitage, दृष्टः seen.

O handsome one, we have seen this highly wonderful hermitage, where deer and tigers dwell together with mutual confidence, where birds of all kinds inhabit.
सप्तानां च समुद्राणामेषु तीर्थेषु लक्ष्मण।

उपस्पृष्टं च विधिवत्पितरश्चापि तर्पिताः।।3.75.4।।


लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, सप्तानाम् of seven, समुद्राणाम् of seas, एषु तीर्थेषु in these waters, उपस्पृष्टम् having bathed, पितरश्चापि oblations to forefathers, विधिवत् in accordance with tradition, तर्पिताः have been invoked with offering.

O Lakshmana, having bathed in the waters of the seven seas (by taking ritualistic bath in these waters) the manes are offered oblations in accordance with tradition.
प्रणष्टमशुभं तत्तत्कल्याणं समुपस्थितम्।

तेन तत्त्वेन हृष्टं मे मनो लक्ष्मण सम्प्रति।।3.75.5।।

हृदये हि नरव्याघ्र शुभमाविर्भविष्यति।


अशुभम् inauspicious time, प्रणष्टम् is got rid of, तत्तत् respectively, कल्याणम् auspicious tidings, समुपस्थितम् have reached, लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, तेन therefore, तत्त्वेन truly, सम्प्रति presently, मनः mind, हृष्टम् happy, नरव्याघ्र O best among men, हृदये at heart, शुभम् good fortune, आविर्भविष्यति हि will appear now.

We have got rid of inauspicious time and good days have come. Therefore, I feel truly happy. Good fortune will appear (now), O Lakshmana, O tiger among men
तदागच्छ गमिष्यामि पम्पां तां प्रियदर्शनाम्।।3.75.6।।

ऋष्यमूको गिरिर्यत्र नातिदूरे प्रकाशते।

यस्मिन्वसति धर्मात्मा सुग्रीवोंऽशुमतस्सुतः।।3.75.7।।

नित्यं वालिभयात्त्रस्तश्चतुर्भिस्सह वानरैः।


तत् therefore, धर्मात्मा the righteous soul, अंशुमतः सुतः son of the Sun, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, नित्यम् ever, वालिभयात् by the fear of Vali, चतुर्भिः with four, वानरैः सह along with monkeys, यस्मिन् in which, वसति stay, ऋष्यमूक: Rishyamuka, यत्र there, नातिदूरे not very far away, प्रकाशते shines, ताम् that, प्रियदर्शनाम् pleasing to look at, पम्पाम् Pampa, गमिष्यामि I will go, आगच्छ you may come along.

Come, let us go to Pampa, which is pleasing to look at. Sugriva, the rigteous self, the son of the Sun has been staying for fear of Vali at the shining Rishyamuka, not far from here.
अभित्वरे च तं द्रष्टुं सुग्रीवं वानरर्षभम्।।3.75.8।।

तदधीनं हि मे सौम्य सीतायाः परिमार्गणम्।


सौम्य O handsome one, वानरर्षभम् mighty among the monkeys, तं सुग्रीवम् that Sugriva, द्रष्टुम् to see, अभित्वरे च I am in haste, सीतायाः of Sita, परिमार्गणम् searching, तदधीनम् depends on him.

I am hastening to see that noble Sugriva the mighty monkey, as the search for Sita depends on him, O handsome one
एवं ब्रुवाणं तं धीरं रामं सौमित्रिरब्रवीत्।।3.75.9।।

गच्छावस्त्वरितं तत्र ममापि त्वरते मनः।


एवम् in that way, ब्रुवाणम् as he spoke, धीरम् stableminded one, तं रामम् to that Rama, सौमित्रिः Soumitri, अब्रवीत् said, मम my, मनः आपि mind also, त्वरते hurrying, त्वरितम् quickly, तत्र there, गच्छावः we both will go.

To the words of Rama who was of stable mind, Lakshmana replied : My mind too is hastening me. Let us get there quickly.
आश्रमात्तु तत स्तस्मान्निष्क्रम्य स विशाम्पतिः।।3.75.10।।

आजगाम ततः पम्पां लक्ष्मणेन सह प्रभुः।


ततः then, विशाम्पतिः lord of men, सः he, प्रभुः lord, तस्मात् from that, आश्रमात् from that hermitage, निष्क्रम्य on departing , ततः then, लक्ष्मणेन सह with Lakshmana, पम्पाम् to Pampa, आजगाम went.

Then Rama the lord of men along with Lakshmana departed from the hermitage and went to Pampa.
स ददर्श ततः पुण्यामुदारजनसेविताम्।।3.75.11।।

नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णां पम्पां पानीयवाहिनीम्।

पद्मैस्सौगन्धिकैस्ताम्रां शुक्लां कुमुदमण्डलैः।।3.75.12।।

नीलां कुवलयोद्घाटैर्बहुवर्णां कुथामिव।


ततः then, सः he, पुण्याम् that sacred, उदारजनसेविताम् the place where exalted seers lived, नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णाम् abounding in different kinds of trees and creepers, पानीयवाहिनीम् with flow of waters, सौगन्धिकैः sweetscented, पद्मैः lotuses, ताम्राम् red, कुमुदमण्डलैः with clusters of lilies, शुक्लाम् white, कुवलयोद्घाटैः with blue waterlilies, नीलाम् blue lotuses, बहुवर्णाम् with variegated colours, कुथामिव like a carpet, पम्पाम् Pampa lake, ददर्श saw.

He saw the sacred lake Pampa whose sweet flow of water was used by great seers. It abounded in trees and creepers. Its surface was red with lotuses at one place, white with clusters of lilies at another and with blue lotuses at other places. As such, it looked like a carpet with variegated colours.
स तामासाद्य वै रामो दूरादुदकवाहिनीम्।।3.75.13।।

मतङ्गसरसं नाम ह्रदं समवगाहत।


सः रामः Rama, उदकवाहिनीम् lake, ताम् that one, दूरात् from a distance, आसाद्य reached, मतङ्गसरसं नाम a place called Matanga lake, ह्रदम् pond,समवगाहत bathed.

Rama reached the Matanga lake which he could see from a distance and bathed in it.
अरविन्दोत्पलवतीं पद्मसौगन्धिकायुताम्।।3.75.14।।

पुष्पिताम्रवणोपेतां बर्हिणोद्घुष्टनादिताम्।

तिलकैर्बीजपूरैश्च धवैश्शुक्लद्रुमैस्तथा।।3.75.15।।

पुष्पितैः करवीरैश्च पुन्नागैश्च सुपुष्पितैः।

मालतीकुन्दगुल्मैश्च भाण्डीरैर्निचुलैस्तथा।।3.75.16।।

अशोकैस्सप्तपर्णैश्च केतकैरतिमुक्तकैः।

अन्यैश्च विविधैर्वृक्षैः प्रमदामिव भूषिताम्।।3.75.17।।

समीक्षमाणौ पुषपाढ्यं सर्वतो विपुलद्रुमम्।

कोयष्टिकैश्चार्जुनकैश्शतपत्रैश्च कीरकैः।।3.75.18।।

एतैश्चान्यैश्च विहगैर्नादितं तु वनं महत्।

ततो जग्मतुरव्यग्रौ राघवौ सुसमाहितौ।।3.75.19।।

तद्वनं चैव सरसः पश्यन्तै शकुनैर्युतम्।


ततः thereafter, राघवौ Rama and Lakshmana, अरविन्दोत्पलवतीम् having lilies and lotuses, पद्मसौगन्धिकायुताम् filled with fragrance of lotuses, पुष्पिताम्रवणोपेताम् with blossoming mango trees, बर्हिणोद्घुष्टनादिताम् resounding with the shrill by of peacocks, तिलकैः with tilaka trees, बीजपूरैश्च trees with fruits full of seeds, धवैः dhava trees, तथा so also, शुक्लद्रुमैः white trees, पुष्पितैः in bloom, करवीरैश्च with karaviras, सुपुष्पितैः loaded with flowers, पुन्नागैश्च with punnaga trees, मालतीकुन्दगुल्मैश्च with clusters of jasmine and kunda shrubs, भाण्डीरैः with fig trees, तथा so also, निचुलैः with reeds, अशोकैः with asoka, अतिमुक्तकैः with atimukta shrubs, अन्यैः and other, विविधैः several, वृक्षैश्च trees, भूषिताम् adorned, प्रमदामिव like a woman, सर्वतः all over, समीक्षमाणौ glancing at them, पुष्पाढ्यम् with abundance of flowers, विपुलद्रुमम् having great trees, कोयष्टिकैश्च with koyashtikas, अर्जुनकैः
arjuna trees, शतपत्रैः peacocks, कीरकैः parrots, एतैः all those, अन्यैः others, विहगैश्च with birds, नादितम् full of sounds, महत् great, शकुनैः with birds, युतम् with, वनम् forest, पश्यन्तौ seeing, अव्यग्रौ both unruffled, सुसमाहितौ both composed, सरसः tank, तत् that, वनम् forest, जग्मतुः both went.

Lake Pampa was filled with red lotuses and their fragrance.The bank was lined with blossoming mango trees and trees of several kinds like tilaka trees with fruits full of seeds like citron, dhava trees, white trees in bloom, karavira trees loaded with flowers, punnaga trees, clusters of jasmine and kunda shrubs, fig trees, so also reeds, ashoka trees, atimuktaka creepors and several other trees looking like women adorned all over. Rama and Lakshmana passed by, glancing at them. There were other trees full of flowers, huge trees, koyashtika trees with reed. Different kinds of birds such as peacocks, parrots, dwelling in the forest were screaming aloud. Looking at all these in that forest Rama and Lakshmana passed by undisturbed with a composed mind.
स ददर्श ततः पम्पां शीतवारिनिधिं शुभाम्।।3.75.20।।

तिलकाशोकपुन्नागवकुलोद्दालकाशिनीम्।


ततः then, सः Rama, शीतवारिनिधिम् a bed of cool waters, शुभाम् auspicious one, तिलकाशोकपुन्नाग with tilaka, asoka, punnaga trees, वकुलोद्दालकाशिनीम् groves shining with vakula, uddala trees, पम्पाम् Pampa, ददर्श saw.

Rama saw lake Pampa with cool waters and the groves on the bank filled with tilaka, ashoka, punnaga, bakula and uddala trees.
स रामो विविधान्वृक्षान्सरांसि विविधानि च।।3.75.21।।

पश्यन्कामाभिसन्तप्तो जगाम परमं ह्रदम्।


सः that, रामः Rama, विविधान् several, वृक्षान् trees, विविधानि different, सरांसि tanks, पश्यन् seeing, कामाभिसन्तप्तः lovestriken, परमम् great, ह्रदम् lake, जगाम went.

On seeing different kinds of trees and tanks, the lovestriken Rama visited that great lake.
पुष्पितोपवनोपेतां सालचम्पकशोभिताम्।।3.75.22।।

षट्पदौघसमाविष्टां श्रीमतीमतुलप्रभाम्।

स्फटिकोपमतोयाढ्यां श्लक्ष्णवालुकसन्तताम्।।3.75.23।।

स तां दृष्ट्वा पुनः पम्पां पद्मसौगन्घिकैर्युताम्।

इत्युवाच तदा वाक्यं लक्ष्मणं सत्यविक्रमः।।3.75.24।।


सत्यविक्रमः whose strength was truth, सः Rama, पुष्पितोपवनोपेताम् with pleasuregardens in full bloom, सालचम्पकशोभिताम् beautiful with sal and champak trees, षट्पदौघसमाविष्टाम् filled with honeybees, श्रीमतीम् lovely one, अतुलप्रभाम् full of incomparable brilliance, स्फटिकोपमतोयाढ्याम् with crystalclear water, श्लक्ष्णवालुकसन्तताम् soft sands that gleamed, पद्मसौगन्धिकैः with fragrant lotuses, युताम् filled, ताम् that, पुनः again, दृष्ट्वा seeing, तदा then, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, इति thus, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said.

There were lovely pleasuregardens in full bloom filled with sal and champk trees. Honeybees on flowers looked lovely and bright. The waters were crystalclear and fragrant with lotuses.The soft sands on the banks of Pampa gleamed. Rama saw them again and again and described them to Lakshmana.
अस्यास्तीरे तु पूर्वोक्तः पर्वतो धातुमण्डितः।

ऋष्यमूक इति ख्यातः पुण्यः पुष्पितपादपः।।3.75.25।।


पूर्वोक्तः referred earlier, धातुमण्डितः adorned with minerals, पुण्यः sacred, पुष्पितपादपः having trees with flowers in bloom, ऋष्यमूकः इति Rishyamuka by name, ख्यातः famous, पर्वतः mountain, अस्याः its, तीरे on the bank.

The famous mount, sacred Rishyamuka is situated on the bank of Pampa full of blossoming trees.
हरेः ऋक्षरजोनाम्नः पुत्रस्तस्य महात्मनः।

अध्यास्ते तं महावीर्यस्सुग्रीव इति विश्रुतः।।3.75.26।।


ऋक्षरजोनाम्नः of Riksharaja by name, महात्मनः of the great soul, तस्य his, हरेः Sun's, पुत्रः son, महावीर्यः mighty, सुग्रीवः इति known as Sugriva, विश्रुतः very wellknown, तम् him, अध्यास्ते is residing.

The mighty son of Riksharaja, the great soul, the Sun whose son was the wellknown Sugriva, resides on this mountain.
सुग्रीवमभिगच्छ त्वं वानरेन्द्रं नरर्षभ।

इत्युवाच पुनर्वाक्यं लक्ष्मणं सत्यविक्रमम्।।3.75.27।।


नरर्षभ best among men, त्वम् you, वानरेन्द्रम् to the lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, अभिगच्छ approach, पुनः again, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, इति this, उवाच said.

Rama said to Lakshmana, the best of men, who had truth as his strength, Go to Sugriva, lord of the monkeys.
राज्यभ्रष्टेन दीनेन तस्यामासक्तचेतसा।

कथं मया विना शक्यं सीतां लक्ष्मण जीवितुम्।।3.75.28।।


लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, राज्यभ्रष्टेन by one dislodged from the kingdom, दीनेन by a pathetic one, तस्याम् in her, आसक्तचेतसा attached to her, मया by me, सीतां विना without Sita, जीवितुम् to live, कथम् how, शक्यम् is it possible?

O Lakshmana, deprived of the kingdom I have become a destitute. With my heart attached to Sita how can I live without her ?
इत्येवमुक्त्वा मदनाभिपीडितः स लक्ष्मणं वाक्यमनन्यचेतसम्।

विवेश पम्पां नलिनीं मनोरमां रघूत्तमश्शोकविषादयन्त्रितः।।3.75.29।।


मदनाभिपीडितः oppressed by love, सः रघूत्तमः that best of the Raghus, अनन्यचेतसम् without
fixing his heart anywhere else, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, इत्येवम् in this way, वाक्यम् words, उक्त्वा having said, शोकविषाद tears of sorrow, यन्त्रितः afflicted, मनोरमाम् delightful, पम्पां नलिनीं a lotus tank, Pampa, विवेश entered.

Having said these words to Lakshmana who was listening to him with undivided attention, Rama, the best of the Raghus, oppressed by love and afflicted by tears of grief entered Pampa, the delightful lotuslake.
ततो महद्वर्त्म सुदूरसङ्क्रमं क्रमेण गत्वा प्रविलोकयन्वनम्।

ददर्श पम्पां शुभदर्शकाननामनेकनानाविधपक्षिजालकाम्।।3.75.30।।


ततः then, सुदूरसङ्क्रमम् extending to a distance, महत् great, वर्त्म path, क्रमेण gradually, गत्वा after going, वनम् forest, प्रविलोकयन् while observing, शुभदर्शकाननाम् surrounded by beautiful forests, अनेकनानाविधपक्षिजालकाम् many varieties of birds, पम्पाम् Pampa, ददर्श saw.

Thereafter, going slowly to a distance, Rama and Lakshmana saw Pampa surrounded by beautiful forests full of many varieties of birds.
इत्यार्ष श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे पञ्चसप्ततिमस्सर्गः।।
Thus ends the seventyfifth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
