[Maricha's admonitions and warnings to Ravana]

ājñaptō rājavadvākyaṅ pratikūlaṅ niśācaraḥ.

abravītparuṣaṅ vākyaṅ mārīcō rākṣasādhipam৷৷3.41.1৷৷


niśācaraḥ demon, pratikūlam adversely, rājavat royal, ājñaptaḥ commanded, mārīcaḥ Maricha, rākṣasādhipam to the king of the demons, paruṣam harsh, vākyam words, abravīt said.

At this royal command which was against his interest Maracha used harsh words to the demon-king:
kēnāyamupadiṣṭastē vināśaḥ pāpakarmaṇā.

saputrasya sarāṣṭrasya sāmātyasya niśācara৷৷3.41.2৷৷


niśācara Ravana, saputrasya with your sons, sarāṣṭrasya with the kingdom, sāmātyasya with the ministers, tē to you, ayam this, vināśaḥ destruction, pāpakarmaṇā sinful action, kēna by whom, upadiṣṭaḥ advised.

Who is that sinner who has given you this advice which will spell destruction on you, your sons, your kingdom and your ministers ?
kastvayā sukhinā rājannābhinandati pāpakṛt.

kēnēdamupadiṣṭaṅ tē mṛtyudvāramupāyataḥ৷৷3.41.3৷৷


rājan king, kaḥ who, pāpakṛt sinner, sukhinā happy one, tvayā by you, nābhinandati not tolerate, mṛtyudvāram death gate, idam this, kēna by whom, tē you, upāyataḥ cunningly, upadiṣṭam advised.

Which sinner is not able to see you happy? O king! by whom is this gate of death
shown to you cunningly?
śatravastava suvyaktaṅ hīnavīryā niśācarāḥ.

icchanti tvāṅ vinaśyantamuparuddhaṅ balīyasā৷৷3.41.4৷৷


tava your, śatravaḥ enemies, hīnavīryāḥ deprived of valour, niśācarāḥ demons, tvām you, balīyasā by a strong person, uparuddham obstructed, vinaśyantam being destroyed, icchanti they like, suvyaktam it is very clear,

This is clear that your enemy demons are now powerless. Hence they want you to be engaged with a stronger power and be destroyed.
kēnēdamupadiṣṭaṅ tē kṣudrēṇāhitavādinā.

yastvāmicchati naśyantaṅ svakṛtēna niśācara৷৷3.41.5৷৷


niśācara O nightwalker (Ravana), yaḥ he who, tvām to you, svakṛtēna by your own action, naśyantam being destroyed, icchati wishes, kṣudrēṇa by a mean fellow, ahitavādinā one who gives wrong advice, kēna by whom, idam this, tē to you, upadiṣṭam advised.

O Ravana! by which mean fellow is this advice given against your welfare? Who wants you to be destroyed by your own action.
vadhyāḥ khalu na hanyantē sacivāstava rāvaṇa.

yē tvāmutpathamārūḍhaṅ na nigṛhṇanti sarvaśaḥ৷৷3.41.6৷৷


rāvaṇa Ravana, utpatham wrong path, ārūḍham you ascended, tvām you, yē those, sarvaśaḥ by all means, na nigṛhṇanti do not prevent, tava sacivāḥ your ministers, vadhyāḥ khalu deserve to be slayed, na hanyantē they are not slain?

O Ravana! the ministers should have prevented you by all means from adopting this wrong path. Since they have not done so, they deserve to be spain.
amātyaiḥ kāmavṛttō hi rājā kāpathamāśritaḥ.

nigrāhyassarvathā sadabhirna nigrāhyō nigṛhyasē৷৷3.41.7৷৷


kāmavṛttaḥ lustful, kāpatham evil path, āśritaḥ resorted to, rājā king, sadbhi: by the good people, amātyaiḥ by ministers, sarvathā always, nigrāhyaḥ hi should be stopped, nigrāhyaḥ prevent, na nigṛhyasē not prevented.

Good ministrers should always prevent a lustful king from taking resourse to an evil path. Why were you not stopped, even though you deserve to be checked.
dharmamarthaṅ ca kāmaṅ ca yaśaśca jayatāṅ vara.

svāmiprasādātsacivāḥ prāpnuvanti niśācara৷৷3.41.8৷৷


jayatām among the successful, vara best, niśācara demons, Ravana, sacivāḥ ministers, dharmam righteousness, arthaṅ ca prosperity, kāmaṅ ca and pleasures, yaśaśca and fame, svāmiprasādāt by the grace of the king, prāpnuvanti attain.

O Ravana ! the best among the successful ministers attain piety, prosperity, pleasures and fame by the grace of the king.
viparyayē tu tatsarvaṅ vyarthaṅ bhavati rāvaṇa.

vyasanaṅ svāmivaiguṇyātprāpnuvantītarē janāḥ৷৷3.41.9৷৷


rāvaṇa Ravana, viparyayē if it be otherwise, tat then, sarvam everything (the four attainments), vyarthaṅ bhavati will become useless, svāmi vaiguṇyāt by the vices of the king, itarē janāḥ others, vyasanam calamity, prāpnuvanti suffer.

Otherwise evrything will become useless, O Ravana ! Others will suffer calamities on account of their master's vices.
rājamūlō hi dharmaśca jayaśca jayatāṅ vara.

tasmātsarvāsvavasthāsu rakṣitavyā narādhipāḥ৷৷3.41.10৷৷


jayatām among the victorious, vara best one, dharmaśca righteousness, jayaśca victory, rājamūla: the king is the root, hi indeed, tasmāt therefore, sarvāsu in all, avasthāsu stages, narādhipāḥ kings, rakṣitavyāḥ deserve to be protected.

O Ravana, the best among the victorious! indeed the king is at the root of righteousness and victory.Therefore, the king should be protected by all at every stage.
rājyaṅ pālayituṅ śakyaṅ na tīkṣṇēna niśācara.

na cāpi pratikūlēna nāvinītēna rākṣasa৷৷3.41.11৷৷


rākṣasa demons, niśācara nightwalker, tīkṣṇēna by a rude one, rājyam kingdom, pālayitum to rule, na śakyam is not possible, pratikūlēna by a hostile one, na not, avinītēna by an impolite one, na not.

O night-walking demon ! a kingdom cannnot be governed by a king who is rude or hostile or impolite.
yē tīkṣṇamantrāssacivā bhajyantē saha tēna vai.

viṣamē turagā śśīghrā mandasārathayō yathā৷৷3.41.12৷৷


yē whoever, sacivāḥ ministers, tīkṣṇamantrāḥ who adopt improper strategies, mandasārathayaḥ when the charioteer is driving slow, śīghrāḥ swiftly, turagāḥ horses, viṣamē yathā on a rugged surface, likewise, tēna by that, saha along with, bhajyantē vai are overthrown.

Ministers who adopt improper strategies go down along with the king just like swift horses driven by a slow charioteer on a rugged terrain.
bahavassādhavō lōkē yuktā dharmamanuṣṭhitāḥ.

parēṣāmaparādhēna vinaṣṭāssaparicchadāḥ৷৷3.41.13৷৷


lōkē in this world, yuktāḥ engaged, dharmam rightful duty, anuṣṭhitāḥ following, bahavaḥ many, sādhavaḥ pious, parēṣām of others, aparādhēna by their mistakes, saparicchadāḥ along with their kith and kin, vinaṣṭāḥ ruined.

Persons who walk the righteous path go down in this world along with their kith and kin due to the mistakes committed by others .
svāminā pratikūlēna prajāstīkṣṇēna rāvaṇa.

rakṣyamāṇā na vardhantē mēṣā gōmāyunā yathā৷৷3.41.14৷৷


rāvaṇa Ravana, pratikūlēna by an unfavourable, tīkṣṇēna by a rude one, svāminā by the master, rakṣyamāṇāḥ protected, prajāḥ people, gōmāyunā by a jackal, mēṣāḥ yathā like sheep, na vardhantē do not grow.

O Ravana, people who are ruled by a cruel and hostile king will not grow like the sheep protected by a jackal.
avaśyaṅ vinaśiṣyanti sarvē rāvaṇa rākṣasāḥ.

yēṣāṅ tvaṅ karkaśō rājā durbuddhirajitēndriyaḥ৷৷3.41.15৷৷


rāvaṇa O Ravana, yēṣām of whom, karkaśaḥ rude , durbuddhi: evil-minded, ajitēndriyaḥ having no control over the senses, tvam you, rājā king, sarvē all, rākṣasāḥ demons, avaśyam surely, vinaśiṣyanti perish.

Under a rude, crooked king whose senses are not under his control the demons will surely perish.
tadidaṅ kākatālīyaṅ ghōramāsāditaṅ mayā.

atra kiṅ śōcanīyastvaṅ sasainyō vinaśiṣyasi৷৷3.41.16৷৷


mayā I, kākatālīyam accidental, ghōram dreadful, tat that, idam this, āsāditam reached, atra here, kim what, tvam you, śōcanīyaḥ deplorable, sasainyaḥ along with your army, vinaśiṣyasi will perish.

I am faced with this dreadful disaster accidentally. You will not only be in a miserable state because of your misdeeds, you will perish along with your army.
māṅ nihatya tu rāmaśca na cirāttvāṅ vadhiṣyati.

anēna kṛtakṛtyō.smi mriyēyamariṇā hataḥ৷৷3.41.17৷৷


rāmaḥ Rama, mām me, nihatya after killing, na cirāt soon, tvām you, vadhiṣyati will kill, ariṇā by the enemy, hataḥ slayed, mriyēyam I will die, anēna by this, kṛtakṛtyaḥ accomplished, asmi I will be.

Rama will kill you not long after killing me.Hence even if I die in the hands of the enemy, my desire will be fulfilled.
darśanādēva rāmasya hataṅ māmavadhāraya.

ātmānaṅ ca hataṅ viddhi hṛtvā sītāṅ sabāndhavam৷৷3.41.18৷৷


rāmasya Rama's, darśanādēva by mere sight, mām me, hatam a dead one, avadhāraya presume, sītām Sita, hṛtvā abducting, sabāndhavam along with your kith and kin, ātmānam yourself, hatam killed, viddhi understand.

Yu most understand that if I die at the very sight of Rama, you along with your relatives will perish with the abduction of Sita.
ānayiṣyasi cētsītāmāśramātsahitō mayā.

naivatvamasi nāhaṅ ca naiva laṅkā na rākṣasāḥ৷৷3.41.19৷৷


mayā sahitaḥ along with me, āśramāt from the hermitage, sītām Sita, ānayiṣyasi cēt if you bring, tvam naiva asi you will not survive, ahaṅ ca I also, na laṅkā nor Lanka, naiva not, rākṣasāḥ
demons, na not.

If you bring Sita from the hermitage with my assistance, know that none of us will survive-you nor I, nor Lanka , nor the demons.
nivāryamāṇastu mayā hitaiṣiṇā na mṛṣyasē vākyamidaṅ niśācara.

parētakalpā hi gatāyuṣō narā hitaṅ na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhirīritam৷৷3.41.20৷৷


niśācara Ravana, hitaiṣiṇā by your well-wisher, mayā by me, nivāryamāṇaḥ warned, idam this, vākyam words, na mṛṣyasē do not comprehend, gatāyuṣaḥ men of reduced life span, parētakalpāḥ almost dead, narāḥ people, suhṛdbhi: by friends, īritam told, hitam good advice, na gṛhṇanti hi not accept.

O Ravana, you do not understand this word of warning coming from your well-wisher. Men who are going to die do not heed the advice given by their friends.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē araṇyakāṇḍē ēkacatvāriṅśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
