[Ravana asks Sita to seek his hand -- Sita's refusal.]

rāvaṇēna tu vaidēhī tadā pṛṣṭā jihīrṣatā.

parivrājakarūpēṇa śaśaṅsātmānamātmanā৷৷3.47.1৷৷


tadā then, jihīrṣuṇā of crooked intention of abducting, parivrājakarūpēṇa in the guise of a mendicant, rāvaṇēna by Ravana, pṛṣṭā was asked, vaidēhī Vaidehi, ātmānam about her, ātmanā herself, śaśaṅsa told.

Then Ravana in the guise of a mendicant with crooked intention to abduct her, asked Vaidehi to tell him about herself.
brāhmaṇaścātithiścāyamanuktō hi śapēta mām.

iti dhyātvā muhūrtaṅ tu sītā vacanamabravīt৷৷3.47.2৷৷


brāhmaṇaśca a brahmin, atithiśca also a guest, ayam this man, anuktaḥ unanswered, mām me, śapēta hi may curse, iti thus, muhūrtam for a moment, dhyātvā thought, sītā Sita, vacanam these words, abravīt said.

'He is a brahmin and also a guest. If unanswered he may curse me'. Thinking this Sita thought for a moment and said:
duhitā janakasyāhaṅ maithilasya mahātmanaḥ.

sītā nāmnāsmi bhadraṅ tē rāmabhāryā dvijōttama৷৷3.47.3৷৷


dvijōttama O best of brahmin, aham I am, maithilasya of the king of Maithila, mahātmanaḥ of the great king, janakasya Janaka's, duhitā daughter, nāmnā by name, sītā asmi Sita, rāmabhāryā wife of Rama, tē to you, bhadram be pleased.

O best of brahmins! be pleased to know I am Sita by name, daughter of the great Janaka, king of Mithila and wife of Rama.
uṣitvā dvādaśa samā ikṣvākuṇāṅ nivēśanē.

bhuñjānā mānuṣānbhōgānsarvakāmasamṛddhinī৷৷3.47.4৷৷


dvādaśa twelve, samāḥ years, ikṣvākūṇām of the Ikshvaku family, nivēśanē in the house, uṣitvā lived, mānuṣān of mortals, bhōgān pleasures, bhuñjānā enjoying, sarvakāmasamṛddhinī all my desires fulfilled.

I lived in the house of the Ikshvakus for twelve years and enjoyed all kinds of pleasures meant for mortals.
tatastrayōdaśē varṣē rājāmantrayata prabhuḥ.

abhiṣēcayituṅ rāmaṅ samētō rājamantribhiḥ৷৷3.47.5৷৷


tataḥ then, prabhuḥ rājā king and lord, trayōdaśē varṣē in the thirteenth year, rājamantribhiḥ kings and ministers, samētaḥ together, rāmam for Rama, abhiṣēcayitum to consecrate, amantrayata consulted.

In the thirteenth year, the king and lord Dasaratha consulted other kings and ministers to consecrate Rama.
tasminsambhriyamāṇē tu rāghavasyābhiṣēcanē.

kaikēyī nāma bhartāramāryā sā yācatē varam৷৷3.47.6৷৷


rāghavasya Rama's, tasmin in that, abhiṣēcanē consecration, sambhriyamāṇē arrangements were being made, kaikēyī nāma Kaikeyi by name, sā she, bhartāram her husband, āryā lady, varam boon, yācatē sought.

Arrangements for consecration were on when queen Kaikeyi sought a boon from the king.
pratigṛhya tu kaikēyī śvaśuraṅ sukṛtēna mē.

mama pravrājanaṅ bharturbharatasyābhiṣēcanam৷৷3.47.7৷৷

dvāvayācata bhartāraṅ satyasandhaṅ nṛpōttamam.


kaikēyī Kaikeyi, mē śvaśuram my father-in-law, sukṛtēna by good luck, pratigṛhya extracted a promise ( married for a consideration), satyasandham truthful, nṛpōttamam best of kings, bhartāram husband's, mama bhartuḥ of my husband, pravrājanam banishment, bharatasya Bharata's, abhiṣēcanam consecration, dvau two (boons), ayācata asked.

For the fulfilment of the promise made to Kaikeyi earlier by my truthful father-in- law, who, to my good luck, was the best of kings, she asked for two boons. One was banishment of my husband and second, consecration of Bharata.
nādya bhōkṣyē na ca svapsyē na pāsyēca kathañcana৷৷3.47.8৷৷

ēṣa mē jīvitasyāntō rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē.


adya today, rāmaḥ Rama, yadiabhiṣicyatē if consecrated, na bhōkṣyē I will not eat, na ca svapsyē I will not sleep, kathañcana in any way, napāsyē ca I will not drink, ēṣaḥ this is, mē my, jīvitasya life's, antaḥ an end.

'I shall not eat, or sleep or even drink if Rama is consecrated and I shall put an end to my life itself' (said Kaikeyi).
iti bruvāṇāṅ kaikēyīṅ śvaśurō mē sa mānadaḥ৷৷3.47.9৷৷

ayācatārthairanvarthairna ca yāñcāṅ cakāra sā.


iti thus, bruvāṇām while speaking, kaikēyīm to Kaikeyi, mānadaḥ respectable, saḥ he, mē my, śvaśuraḥ father-in-law, anvarthaiḥ arthaiḥ riches, ayācata requested, sā she, yāñcām soliciting, na ca cakāra not agreed.

The king, my father-in-law, who respected her offered riches. Which she did not accept.
mama bhartāmahātējā vayasā pañcaviṅśakaḥ৷৷3.47.10৷৷

aṣṭādaśa hi varṣāṇi mama janmani gaṇyatē.


mahātējāḥ very bold, mama bhartā my husband, vayasā by age, pañcaviṅśakaḥ twenty five, mama mine, janmani completed after birth, aṣṭādaśa eighteen, varṣāṇi years, gaṇyatē is counted.

My husband who was very bold was twentyfive years and I had completed eighteen years since my birth.
rāmēti prathitō lōkē guṇavānsatyavānśuciḥ৷৷3.47.11৷৷

viśālākṣō mahābāhussarvabhūtahitē rataḥ.


rāmēti known as Rama, lōkē in the world, prathitaḥ famous, guṇavān virtuous, satyavān truthful, śuciḥ pure, viśālākṣaḥ large- eyed, mahābāhuḥ large-armed, sarvabhūtahitē in the well-being of all, rataḥ engaged.

My husband known in the world as Rama is large-eyed, long-armed, virtuous, truthful, pure and is always engaged in the welfare of all beings.
kāmārtastu mahātējāḥ pitā daśarathassvayam৷৷3.47.12৷৷

kaikēyyāḥ priyakāmārthaṅ taṅ rāmaṅ nābhyaṣēcayat.


kāmārtaḥ overcome by love, mahātējāḥ brilliant, pitā father, daśarathaḥ Dasaratha, svayam himself, kaikēyyāḥ Kaikeyi, priyakāmārtham to please her, taṅ rāmam Rama, nābhyaṣēcayat not consecrated.

The brilliant king, Dasaratha, father of Rama, overcome by passion, did not consecrate Rama in order to please Kaikeyi.
abhiṣēkāya tu pitussamīpaṅ rāmamāgatam৷৷3.47.13৷৷

kaikēyī mama bhartāramityuvāca dhṛtaṅ vacaḥ.


abhiṣēkāya for consecration, tu but, samīpam near, āgatam reached, mama bhartāram to my husband, rāmam Rama, iti dhṛtam in unhesitating vacaḥ words, uvāca said.

When my husband Rama approached his father for the consecration she said these unhesitating words:
tava pitrā samājñaptaṅ mamēdaṅ śṛṇu rāghava৷৷3.47.14৷৷

bharatāya pradātavyamidaṅ rājyamakaṇṭakam.


rāghava O Rama, tava your, pitrā by father, samājñaptam is ordered, idam this way, śṛṇu listen, akaṇṭakam without any obstacles, idaṅ rājyam this kingdom, bharatāya to Bharata, pradātavyam should be bestowed.

'O Rama, listen, your father has ordered that this kingdom be bestowed on Bharata without any obstacles.
tvayā hi khalu vastavyaṅ nava varṣāṇi pañca ca৷৷3.47.15৷৷

vanē pravraja kākutstha pitaraṅ mōcayānṛtān.


kākutstha Rama of the Kakutstha dynasty, tvayā by you, nava pañca ca varṣāṇi fourteen years, vanē in the forest, vastavyam khalu you should live indeed, pravraja proceed in exile, pitaram to father, anṛtāt from falsehood, mōcaya save him.

'O Rama of the Kakutstha dynasty, you should live in the forest for fourteen years and save your father from falsehood'.
tathētyuktvā ca tāṅ rāmaḥ kaikēyīmakutōbhayaḥ৷৷3.47.16৷৷

cakāra tadvacastasyā mama bhartā dṛḍhavrataḥ.


akutōbhayaḥ a fearless man, dṛḍhavrataḥ of firm resolution, mama bhartā my husband, rāmaḥ Rama, tathēti be it so, tām her, kaikēyīm to Kaikeyi, uktvā said, tasyāḥ her, tat those, vacaḥ words, cakāra executed.

My husband Rama, a man of fearlessness and firm resolution, said to Kaikeyi 'Be it so' and carried out her words.
dadyānna pratigṛhṇīyātsatyaṅ brūyānna cānṛtam৷৷3.47.17৷৷

ētadbrāhmaṇa rāmasya dhrṛvaṅ vratamanuttamam.


dadyāt giver, na pratigṛhṇīyāt not receive, satyam truth, brūyāt utter, anṛtam other than truth, na ca not utter, brāhmaṇa brahmin, ētat this is, rāmasya Rama's, dhṛvam resolve, anuttamam very great, vratam vow.

O brahmin! this is his firm resolve and his great vow: 'One should give and never take; one should speak the truth and nothing but he truth.'
tasya bhrātā tu dvaimātrō lakṣmaṇō nāma vīryavān৷৷3.47.18৷৷

rāmasya puruṣavyāghrassahāyassamarērihā.


tasya rāmasya such Rama's, dvaimātraḥ bhrātā second mother's son, half- brother, vīryavān strong, puruṣavyāghraḥ tiger among men, arihā slayer of enemies, lakṣmaṇō nāma by name Lakshmana, samarē in battle, sahāya: companion.

Son to the second mother of Rama, his mighty half-brother, by name, Lakshmana, a tiger among men and a slayer of enemies in battle is a companion to him.
sa bhrātā lakṣmaṇō nāma dharmacārī dṛḍhavrataḥ৷৷3.47.19৷৷

anvagacchaddanuṣpāṇiḥ pravrajantaṅ mayā saha.


dharmacārī righteous, dṛḍhavrataḥ steadfast, lakṣmaṇō nāma Lakshmana by name, saḥ bhrātā his brother, dhanuṣpāṇiḥ wielder of bow, mayā saha along with me, pravrajantam as he was being exiled, anvagacchat came along.

Lakshmana, his brother, is righteous and steadfast. Bow in hand, he followed Rama along with me, into exile.
jaṭī tāpasarūpēṇa mayā saha sahānujaḥ৷৷3.47.20৷৷

praviṣṭō daṇḍakāraṇyaṅ dharmanityō jitēndriyaḥ.


dharmanityaḥ ever righteous, jitēndriyaḥ self-controlled, jaṭī with matted locks, mayā saha along with me, sahānujaḥ with his brother, daṇḍakāraṇyam Dandaka forest, praviṣṭaḥ entered.

Rama who is ever righteous and self-controlled entered the Dandaka forest with matted locks, his brother and me.
tē vayaṅ pracyutā rājyātkaikēyyāstu kṛtē trayaḥ৷৷3.47.21৷৷

vicarāmō dvijaśrēṣṭha vanaṅ gambhīramōjasā.


dvijaśrēṣṭha O best among brahmins, tē those of us, vayam we, trayaḥ three of us, kaikēyyāḥ kṛtē on account of Kaikeyi, rājyāt from kingdom, pracyutāḥ dislodged, ōjasā with valour, gambhīram deep, vanam forest, vicarāmaḥ wandering.

O best of brahmins! three of us have been wandering with courage in the deep forest, dislodged from the kingdom on account of Kaikeyi.
samāśvasa muhūrtaṅ tu śakyaṅ vastumiha tvayā৷৷3.47.22৷৷

āgamiṣyati mē bhartā vanyamādāya puṣkalam.

rurūngōdhā nvarāhāṅśca hatvā.dāyā.miṣānbahūn৷৷3.47.23৷৷


muhūrtam for a while, samāśvasa take rest, tvayā by you, iha here, vastum to stay, śakyam it is possible, mē bhartā my husband, rurūn deer, gōdhāḥ alligators, varāhāṅśca boars, hatvā after killing, bahūn many of them, āmiṣān varieties of meat, ādāya would fetch, puṣkalam in plenty, vanyam from the forest, ādāya getting, āgamiṣyati will come.

Rest here awhile. My husband will return with plenty of meat of many kinds from the forest, killing deer, alligators and wild boars.
sa tvaṅ nāma ca gōtrañca kulaṅ cācakṣva tattvataḥ.

ēkaśca daṇḍakāraṇyē kimarthaṅ carasi dvija৷৷3.47.24৷৷


dvija O brahmin!, saḥ such as you, tvam you, nāma ca name and, gōtrañca gotram, kulaṅ ca race, tattvataḥ truly, ācakṣva tell me, ēkaḥ ca alone, daṇḍakāraṇyē in Dandaka forest, kimartham for what purpose, carasi going about.

O brahmin, tell me your name, your gotra and your pedigree. And the purpose for which you are going about all alone in this Dandaka forest
ēvaṅ bṛvantyāṅ sītāyāṅ rāmapatnyāṅ mahābalaḥ.

pratyuvācōttaraṅ tīvraṅ rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ৷৷3.47.25৷৷


rāmapatnyām when Rama's wife, sītāyām Sita, ēvam in that way, bruvantyām speaking, mahābalaḥ powerful, rākṣasādhipaḥ king of demons, rāvaṇaḥ Ravana, tīvram sharp, uttaram reply, pratyuvāca replied.

To these words of Sita, Rama's wife, Ravana, the powerful king of demons, replied sharp:
yēna vitrāsitā lōkāssadēvāsurapannagāḥ.

ahaṅ tu rāvaṇō nāma sītē rakṣōgaṇēśvaraḥ৷৷3.47.26৷৷


sītē O Sita!, aham I am, yēna by whom, sadēvāsurapannagāḥ asuras and pannagas along with gods, lōkāḥ worlds, vitrāsitāḥ are frightened, rakṣōgaṇēśvaraḥ lord of demons, rāvaṇō nāma Ravana by name.

O Sita! I am called Ravana, the lord of demons by whom all the worlds of demons,
snakes and gods are frightened.
tvāṅ tu kāñcanavarṇābhāṅ dṛṣṭvā kauśēyavāsinīm.

ratiṅ svakēṣu dārēṣu nādhigacchāmyaninditē৷৷3.47.27৷৷


aninditē O flawless lady, kāñcanavarṇābhām of golden complexion, kauśēyavāsinīm clad in silk, tvām you, dṛṣṭvā after seeing, svakēṣu my own, dārēṣu wives, ratim love, nādhigacchāmi do not feel.

O flawless beauty of golden complexion! seeing you clad in silk, I am not inclined to show any interest in my own wives.
bahvīnāmuttamastrīṇāmāhṛtānāmitastataḥ.

sarvāsāmēva bhadraṅ tē mamāgramahiṣī bhava৷৷3.47.28৷৷


itastata: from various places, āhṛtānām won over, bahvīnām of many women, sarvāsāmēva of all of them, uttamastrīṇām of the best of women, mama myself, agramahiṣī chief queen, bhava be, tē bhadram be blessed.

You will be the chief queen among the best of women I have won in wars. Be blessed.
laṅkānāma samudrasya mama madhyē mahāpurī.

sāgarēṇa parikṣistā niviṣṭā nagamūrdhani৷৷3.47.29৷৷


laṅkā nāma by name Lanka, mama my, mahāpurī great city, samudrasya of the sea, madhyē in the middle, sāgarēṇa by sea, parikṣiptā surrounded, nagamūrdhani on the peak of a mountain, niviṣṭā it is situated.

My great city called Lanka is on the peak of a mountain surrounded by, and in the middle of, the sea.
tatra sītē mayā sārdhaṅ vanēṣu vihariṣyasi.

na cāsyāraṇyavāsasya spṛhayiṣyasi bhāmini৷৷3.47.30৷৷


sītē O! Sita, tatra there, mayā sārdham with me, vanēṣu in the gardens, vihariṣyasi can stroll with pleasure, bhāmini O beautiful woman, asya of this, araṇyasya vāsasya living in the forest, na ca spṛhayiṣyasi will not like.

O Sita, you can stroll with me in my pleasure-gardens. O beautiful lady, you will not like living in the forest (thereafter).
pañca dāsyassahasrāṇi sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ.

sītē paricariṣyanti bhāryā bhavasi mē yadi৷৷3.47.31৷৷


sītē Sita, mē my, bhāryā wife, bhavasi yadi if you become so, sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ adorned with all kinds of ornaments, sahasrāṇi thousands, pañca five, dāsyaḥ female attendants, paricariṣyanti they will serve you.

O Sita ! if you become my wife, five thousand female attendants adorned with all ornaments will attend on you.
rāvaṇēnaivamuktā tu kupitā janakātmajā.

pratyuvācānavadyāṅgī tamanādṛtya rākṣasam৷৷3.47.32৷৷


rāvaṇēna by Ravana, ēvam like that, uktā having been told, anavadyāṅgī a lady of blemishless limbs, janakātmajā Janaka's daughter(Janaki), kupitā in rage, tam that, rākṣasam demon, anādṛtya without caring, pratyuvāca replied.

Thus addressed by Ravana, Janaki, a lady of blemishless limbs, got enraged and replied without caring for the demon:
mahāgirimivākampyaṅ mahēndrasadṛśaṅ patim.

mahōdadhimivākṣōbhyamahaṅ rāmamanuvratā৷৷3.47.33৷৷


mahāgirimiva like a huge mountain, akampyam unshakeable, mahēndrasadṛśam equal to great Indra, mahōdadhimiva like a mighty sea, akṣōbhyam imperturbable, patim husband, rāmam Rama, aham I, anuvratā faithful follower.

I am devoted to Rama, my husband, who is unshakeable like a huge mountain, is comparable to lord Indra and is imperturbable like the mighty ocean.
sarvalakṣaṇasampannaṅ nyagrōdhaparimaṇḍalam.

satyasandhaṅ mahābhāgamahaṅ rāmamanuvratā৷৷3.47.34৷৷


aham I am, sarvalakṣaṇasampannam endowed with all excellences, nyagrōdhaparimaṇḍalam a refuge like a spreading banyan tree, satyasandham devoted to truth, mahābhāgam venerable, rāmam Rama, anuvratā a loyal wife.

I am the loyal wife of venerable Rama who is endowed with all excellences, a refuge to all like a spreading banyan tree, and a votary of truth.
mahābāhuṅ mahōraskaṅ siṅhavikrāntagāminam.

nṛsiṅhaṅ siṅhasaṅkāśamahaṅ rāmamanuvratā৷৷3.47.35৷৷


aham I am, mahābāhum long-armed hero, mahōraskam broad-chested, siṅhavikrāntagāminam takes strides like an advancing lion, nṛsiṅham like a lion among men, siṅhasaṅkāśam invincible like lion, rāmam Rama, anuvratā faithful wife.

I am the faithful wife of the long-armed, broad-chested Rama, - a lion among men. His gait is the gait of an advancing, invincible lion.
pūrṇacandrānanaṅ rāmaṅ rājavatsaṅ jitēndriyam.

pṛthukīrtiṅ mahātmānamahaṅ rāmamanuvratā৷৷3.47.36৷৷


aham I am, purṇacandrānanam face like the full Moon, rājavatsam son of a king, jitēndriyam who has conquered his senses, pṛthukīrtim whose fame is wide-spread, mahātmānam great self, rāmam Rama, anuvratā devoted wife.

I am the devoted wife of great Rama, whose face is like a fullmoon, who is the son of a king, who has conquered his senses and whose fame is wide-spread (on earth).
tvaṅ punarjambukassiṅhīṅ māmicchasi sudurlabhām.

nāhaṅ śakyā tvayā spraṣṭumādityasya prabhā yathā৷৷3.47.37৷৷


jambukaḥ jackal, tvaṅ punaḥ you are, sudurlabhām most difficult to have, siṅhīm a lioness, mām me, icchasi you are desiring, ādityasya like the Sun's, prabhā yathā radiance, aham I am, tvayā by you, spraṣṭum even to touch, na śakyā not possible.

You are a jackal, and you want a lioness like me who is difficult to win. I am like the Sun's radiance whom you cannot even touch.
pādapānkāñcanānnūnaṅ bahūnpaśyasi mandabhāk.

rāghapasya priyāṅ bhāryāṅ yastvamicchasi rāvaṇa৷৷3.47.38৷৷


rāvaṇa O Ravana, yaḥ one who, tvam you, rāghavasya Rama's, priyām dear, bhāryām wife, icchasi you want, mandabhāk unfortunate, nūnam certainly, kāñcanān golden, pādapān trees, paśyasi you will see.

O luckless Ravana ! you want the beloved wife of Rama.You will, for sure, see golden trees. (which those close to death do).
kṣudhitasya hi siṅhasya mṛgaśatrōstarasvinaḥ.

āśīviṣasya mukhāddaṅṣṭrāmādātumicchasi৷৷3.47.39৷৷


mṛgaśatrōḥ enemy of the deer, tarasvinaḥ of the powerful, kṣudhitasya of a hungry, siṅhasya lion's,
āśīviṣasya of a poisonous snake, mukhāt from the mouth, daṅṣṭrām teeth, ādātum to seize, icchasi intending.

You are seeking to pull the teeth from the mouth of a hungry and powerful lion who is considered the enemy of the deer(which you are). You intend to pull the fang of a poisonous snake.
mandaraṅ parvataśrēṣṭhaṅ pāṇinā hartumicchasi.

kālakūṭaṅ viṣaṅ pītvā svastimāngantumicchasi৷৷3.47.40৷৷


parvataśrēṣṭham greatest of the mountains, mandaram Mandara, pāṇinā with a hand, hartum to carry, icchasi want, kālakūṭaṅ viṣam deadly poison (produced from the churning of the ocean), pītvā after drinking, svastimān safely, gantum to go, icchasi wishing.

You are trying to carry the greatest of mountains, the Mandara, with one hand. You are wishing to go safe after drinking deadly poison (produced from the churning of the ocean).
akṣi sūcyā pramṛjasi jihvayā lēkṣi ca kṣuram.

rāghavasya priyāṅ bhāryāṅ yō.dhigantuṅ tvamicchasi৷৷3.47.41৷৷


yaḥ he who, tvam you, rāghavasya priyām dear to Rama, bhāryām wife, adhigantum violate, icchasi desiring to, sūcyā by needle, akṣi eyes, pramṛjasi rubbing, jihvayā by your tongue, kṣuram razor, lēkṣi licking.

You wish to violate the loving wife of Rama. You are rubbing your eyes with a needle and licking the razor with your tongue.
avasajya śilāṅ kaṇṭhē samudraṅ tartumicchasi.

sūryācandramasau cōbhau pāṇibhyāṅ hartumicchasi৷৷3.47.42৷৷

yō rāmasya priyāṅ bhāryāṅ pradharṣayitumicchasi.


yaḥ he who, rāmasya Rama's, priyām very dear, bhāryām wife, pradharṣayitum assault, icchasi desiring, kaṇṭhē in the neck, śilām stone, avasajya after girding round the neck, samudram sea, tartum cross, icchasi desiring, sūryācandramasau Sun and Moon, ubhau both, pāṇibhyām with both hands, hartum to carry, icchasi desiring,

You want to assault Rama's dear wife. It is like girding a stone round the neck and trying to cross the sea.It is like intending to take the Sun and the Moon with both your hands.
agniṅ prajvalitaṅ dṛṣṭvā vastrēṇāhartumicchasi৷৷3.47.43৷৷

kālyāṇavṛttāṅ rāmasya yō bhāryāṅhartumicchasi.


yaḥ one who, rāmasya Rama's, kalyāṇavṛttām a woman of virtuous conduct, bhāryām wife, hartum to seize, icchasi you intend to, prajvalitam blazing, agnim fire, dṛṣṭvā after seeing that, vastrēṇa by cloth, āhartum to hold, icchasi desiring.

You intend to assaut the wife of Rama, who is a lady of virtuous conduct. You wish to hold blazing fire in your cloth.
ayōmukhānāṅ śūlānāmagrē caritumicchasi৷৷3.47.44৷৷

rāmasya sadṛśīṅ bhāryāṅ yō.dhigantuṅ tvamicchasi.


yaḥ one who, tvam you, rāmasya Rama's, sadṛśīm his another worthy form, bhāryām wife, adhigantum to acquire, icchasi wish, ayōmukhānām sharp iron-headed, śūlānām spears, agrē on the top, caritum to walk on, icchasi want.

You want to acquire Rama's worthy wife. You wish to walk on sharp iron-headed spear.
yadantaraṅ siṅhaśṛgālayōrvanē yadantaraṅ syandinikā samudrayōḥ.

surāgrya sauvīrakayōryadantaraṅ tadantaraṅ vai tava rāghavasya ca৷৷3.47.45৷৷


vanē in the forest, siṅhaśṛgālayōḥ between a lion and a jackal, yat whatever, antaram difference, syandinikāsamudrayōḥ between a ditch and a sea, yat that, antaram difference, surāgrya sauvīrakayōḥ best of wines and sour gruel, yat whatever, antaram difference, tava your, rāghavasya ca and Rama, tat there, antaram difference.

The difference between you and Rama is the difference between a jackal and a lion in the forest, between a ditch and the sea, and between sour gruel and the best of wines.
yadantaraṅ kāñcanasīsalōhayōryadantaraṅ candanavāripaṅkayōḥ.

yadantaraṅ hastibiḍālayōrvanē tadantaraṅ dāśarathēstavaiva ca৷৷3.47.46৷৷


kāñcanasīsalōhayōḥ between gold and lead, yat whatever, antaram difference, candanavāripaṅkayōḥ between sandal and slime, yat whatever, antaram difference, hastibiḍālayōrvanē between the elephant and the cat in the forest, dāśarathēḥ of Dasaratha's son, tavaiva ca and yours, tat that, antaram difference.

The difference between you and Rama is the difference between gold and lead, sandal and slime, an elephant and a cat of the forest.
yadantaraṅ vāyasavainatēyayōryadantaraṅ madgumayūrayōrapi.

yadantaraṅ sārasagṛdhrayōrvanē tadantaraṅ dāśarathēstavaiva ca৷৷3.47.47৷৷


vāyasavainatēyayōḥ between a crow and and Garuda, yat whatever, antaram difference, madgumayūrayōrapi beween a water-crane and a peacock, yat whatever, antaram difference, vanē in the forest, sārasagṛdhrayōḥ between a vulture and a swan, yat that amount, antaram difference, dāśarathēḥ Dasaratha's son, tavaiva ca and you, tat that, antaram difference.

The difference between you and Dasaratha's son is the difference between a crow and Garuda, a water-crane and a peacock, a vulture and a swan in the forest.
tasminsahasrākṣasamaprabhāvē rāmē sthitē kārmukabāṇapāṇau.

hṛtāpi tēhaṅ na jarāṅ gamiṣyē vajraṅ yathā makṣikayāvagīrṇam৷৷3.47.48৷৷


hṛtāpi even if I am abducted, aham I, sahasrākṣasamaprabhāvē a man equal in prowess to the thousand-eyed Indra, kārmuka bāṇapāṇau armed with bow and arrows, tasmin when he, rāmē while Rama, sthitē when he stands, makṣikayā by fly, avagīrṇam gulped (presuming it to be a grain of rice), vajraṅ yathā like a diamond, tē to you, jarāṅ na gamiṣyē will not be withered.

So long Rama, equal in prowess to the thousand-eyed Indra stands with bow and arrows in hand, I will not, although abducted, wither away like a diamond gulped by an insect (fly).
itīva tadvākyamaduṣṭabhāvā suduṣṭamuktvā rajanīcaraṅ tam.

gātraprakampādvyathitā babhūva vātōddhatā sā kadalīva tanvī৷৷3.47.49৷৷


aduṣṭabhāvā pure in thought, tanvī slim, sā that, suduṣṭam forcefully, taṅ rajanīcaram night-walker, tat that, vākyam words, iti thus, uktvā said, gātraprakampāt due to trembling of the body, vātōddhatā shaken by violent wind, kadalīva banana, vyathitā distressed, babhūva became.

Having said thus to the wicked night-walker Ravana, Sita, pure in thought remained distressed.Her slender body started trembling like a banana plant becomes shaken by a violent wind.
tāṅ vēpamānāmupalakṣya sītāṅ sa rāvaṇō mṛtyusamaprabhāvaḥ.

kulaṅ balaṅ nāma ca karma cātmanaḥ samācacakṣē bhayakāraṇārtham৷৷3.47.50৷৷
