Having heard Sugriva's pleasing words, the brilliant Rama took up the bow in order to inspire confidence in Sugriva.

Rama, subduer of the enemy's pride, strung his terrific bow, produced the twang that filled all directions, and discharged a single arrow aimed at the sala tree.

Released with great force, Rama's arrow embellished with gold pierced through the seven sala trees and splitting the mountain terrain entered the earth.

In a moment the arrow emerged from the earth which it pierced and re-entered the quiver with great speed.

The chief of the monkeys was struck with wonder seeing Rama's arrow piercing through the seven sala trees so swiftly.

পরমপ্রীতঃ highly pleased, সঃ সুগ্রীবঃ that Sugriva, রাঘবায to Rama, কৃতাঞ্জলিঃ offered obeisance with folded hands, প্রলম্বীকৃতভূষণঃ ornaments hanging down, মূর্ধ্না forehead, ভূমৌ on the ground, ন্যপতত্ prostrated.

Sugriva was immensely happy and offered obeisance to Rama with folded hands and bowed down and prostrated while his ornaments touched the ground.

Sugriva who stood by, elated to watch the deed of Rama, best among the valiant, proficient in the use of arms of all kinds and knower of dharma, said:
সেন্দ্রানপি সুরান্সর্বাংস্ত্বং বাণৈঃ পুরুষর্ষভ!৷

সমর্থস্সমরে হন্তুং কিং পুন র্বালিনং প্রভো! 4.12.8৷৷


পুরুষর্ষভ O best among men, প্রভো O lord, ত্বম্ you, সমরে in war, সেন্দ্রান্ including Indra, সর্বান্ all, সুরান্ অপি even gods, হন্তুম্ to kill, সমর্থঃ are capable, বালিনম্ Vali, কিং পুনঃ what to speak of again.

'O bull among men, O lord, you are capable of killing with your arrows even the gods including Indra in the battle, what to speak of Vali.

'Having found a friend in you comparable to Indra and Varuna, my grief is gone and I am so happy now.

বালিনং জহি কাকুত্স্থ মযা বদ্ধোযমঞ্জলিঃ4.12.11৷৷


কাকুত্স্থ O Rama, মে my, ভ্রাতৃরূপিণম্ in the form of a brother, বৈরিণম্ enemy, তং বালিনম্ that Vali, অদ্যৈব now itself, প্রিযার্থম্ for my pleasure, জহি you may kill, মযা by me, অযম্ this, অঞ্জলি: reverential obeisance, বদ্ধঃ offered.

'O Rama, for my pleasure kill Vali who is, to me, an enemy in the guise of a brother. I fold my hands to you.
ততো রামঃ পরিষ্বজ্য সুগ্রীবং প্রিযদর্শনম্৷

প্রত্যুবাচ মহাপ্রাজ্ঞো লক্ষ্মণানুগতং বচঃ4.12.12৷৷

Then wise Rama embraced handsome Sugriva and replied in these words which were agreeable to Lakshmana:
অস্মাদ্গচ্ছেম কিষ্কিন্ধাং ক্ষিপ্রং গচ্ছ ত্বমগ্রতঃ৷

গত্বা চাহ্বয সুগ্রীব! বালিনং ভ্রাতৃগন্ধিনম্4.12.13৷৷


সুগ্রীব Sugriva, ক্ষিপ্রম্ at once, অস্মাত্ from here, কিষ্কিন্থাম্ to Kishkinda, গচ্ছেম will go, ত্বম্ you, ক্ষিপ্রম্ at once, অগ্রতঃ forward, গচ্ছ go, গত্বা on going, ভ্রাতৃগন্ধিনম্ a brother for name's sake, বালিনম্ Vali, আহ্বয invite.

'O Sugriva, get ready at once. We will promptly proceed to Kishkinda from here. Go ahead and challenge Vali, your brother only in name, to a combat.'
সর্বে তে ত্বরিতং গত্বা কিষ্কিন্ধাং বালিনঃ পুরীম্৷

বৃক্ষৈরাত্মানমাবৃত্য ব্যতিষ্ঠন্গহনে বনে4.12.14৷৷


তে সর্বে they all, বালিনঃ Vali's, পুরীম্ capital, কিষ্কিন্ধাম্ Kishkinda, ত্বরিতম্ quickly, গত্বা went, গহনে dense, বনে forest, বৃক্ষৈঃ with trees, আত্মানম্ themselves, অবৃ়ত্য after covering, অতিষ্ঠন্ stayed.

Thay all rushed to Kishkinda, the capital of Vali and waited in the thick forest behind the trees.
সুগ্রীবো ব্যনদদ্ঘোরং বালিনোহ্বানকারণাত্৷

গাঢং পরিহিতো বেগান্নাদৈর্ভিন্দন্নিবাম্বরম্4.12.15৷৷


সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, গাঢং tightly, পরিহিতঃ tightened the cloth around waist, বেগাত্ with speed, নাদৈঃ by roaring, অম্বরম্ sky, ভিন্দন্নিব as if piercing the sky, বালিনঃ Vali's, হ্বানকারণাত্ to call out, ঘোরম্ terrific, ব্যনদত্ screamed.

Sugriva tightened up his waist- cloth hurriedly and roared terrifically as though piercing the sky. And screamed for Vali.
তং শ্রুত্বা নিনদং ভ্রাতুঃ ক্রুদ্ধো বালী মহাবলঃ৷

নিশ্চক্রাম সুসংরব্ধো ভাস্করোস্ততটাদিব4.12.16৷৷


মহাবলঃ powerful, বালী Vali, ভ্রাতুঃ brother's, তং নিনদম্ roaring, শ্রুত্বা hearing, ক্রুদ্ধঃ enraged, সুসংরব্ধঃ overwhelmed, অস্ততটাত্ from behind the western bank of the ocean, ভাস্করঃ Sun, যথা like, নিষ্পপাত came out.

On hearing his brother roaring, powerful Vali was enraged and rushed like the Sun from behind the western shore of the ocean (this simile suggests the downfall of Vali).
ততস্সুতুমুলং যুদ্ধং বালিসুগ্রীবযোরভূত্৷

গগনে গ্রহযোর্ঘোরং বুধাঙ্গারকযোরিব4.12.17৷৷


ততঃ then, বালিসুগ্রীবযোঃ for Vali and Sugriva, বুধাঙ্গারকযোঃ between Budha (Mercury) and Angaraka (Mars), গ্রহযোরিব like the planets, সুতুমুলম্ tumultous, যুদ্ধম্ war, অভূত্ took place.

Then a tumultuous combat took place between Vali and Sugriva who looked like the planets Mercury and Mars.

জঘ্নতুস্সমরেন্যোন্যং ভ্রাতরৌ ক্রোধমূর্ছিতৌ4.12.18৷৷


ক্রোধমূর্ছিতৌ senseless with fury, ভ্রাতরৌ brothers, অশনিকল্পৈঃ like thunder, তলৈঃ with palms soles, বজ্রকল্পৈঃ like thunderbolts, মুষ্টিভিঃ with fists, সমরে in the combat, অন্যোন্যম্ each other, জঘ্নতুঃ struck.

The brothers, insensate with fury, struck each other like thunder with their palms, soles and fists in the combat.
ততো রামো ধনুষ্পাণিস্তাবুভৌ সমুদীক্ষ্যতু৷

অন্যোন্যসদৃশৌ বীরাবুভৌ দেবাবিবাশ্বিনৌ4.12.19৷৷


ততঃ then, ধনুষ্পাণিঃ wielder of bow, রামঃ Rama, দেবৌ two deities, অশ্বিনৌ ইব like the twin Aswini Kumaras, অন্যোন্যসদৃশৌ both of them similar in looks, তৌ they, উভৌ both, বীরৌ the two heroes, সমুদীক্ষ্যতু watched

Bow in hand, Rama watched both the heroes who resembled the twin Aswini Kumaras.

ততো ন কৃতবান্বুদ্ধিং মোক্তুমন্তকরং শরম্4.12.20৷৷


রাঘবঃ Rama, সুগ্রীবম্ Sugriva, বালিনং বাপি or Vali, যত্ such and such, নাবগচ্ছত্ not able to distinguish, ততঃ then, অন্তকরম্ deadly, শরম্ arrow, মোক্তুম্ to discharge, বুদ্ধিম্ intellect, ন কৃতবান্ not made.

Since Rama was not able to distinguish between Vali and Sugriva, he could not decide whether he should discharge his deadly arrow .

এতস্মিন্ অন্তরে in the mean while, তেন বালিনা by Vali, ভগ্নঃ discomfited, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, নাথম্ lord, রাঘবম্ Rama, অপশ্যন্ not finding, ঋশ্যমূকম্ to Rishyamuka, প্রদুদ্রুবে ran.

Discomfited by Vali, and not seeing Rama around, Sugriva ran towards Rishyamuka mountain.
ক্লান্তো রুধিরসিক্তাঙ্গঃ প্রহারৈর্জর্ঝরীকৃতঃ৷

বালিনাভিদ্রুতঃ ক্রোধাত্প্রবিবেশ মহাবনম্4.12.22৷৷


বালিনা by Vali, ক্রোধাত্ angry, অভিদ্রুতঃ chased, ক্লান্তঃ exhausted, রুধিরসিক্তাঙ্গঃ body drenched in blood, প্রহারৈঃ with strokes, জর্ঝরীকৃতঃ mauled, মহাবনম্ great grove (of Matanga), প্রবিবেশ entered.

Exhausted, disfigured and body mauled and drenched in blood all over, Sugriva, chased by the infuriated Vali, entered the region of great sage Matanga.
তং প্রবিষ্টং বনং দৃষ্ট্বা বালী শাপভযার্দিতঃ৷

মুক্তো হ্যসি ত্বমিত্যুক্ত্বা স নিবৃত্তো মহাদ্যুতিঃ4.12.23৷৷


বনম্ grove, প্রবিষ্টম্ entered, তম্ him, দৃষ্ট্বা after seeing, মহাদ্যুতিঃ effulgent, বালী Vali, ত্বম্ you, মুক্তঃ অসি হি you have escaped, ইতি thus, উক্ত্বা having said, শাপভযাত্ by the fear of the curse, ততঃ then, নিবৃত্তঃ returned.

Effulgent Vali saw Sugriva entering the (prohibited) grove and turned back due to the fear of the curse (of sage Matanga) saying, 'You have escaped'.
রাঘবোসি সহ ভ্রাত্রা সহ চৈব হনূমতা৷

তদেব বনমাগচ্ছত্সুগ্রীবো যত্র বানরঃ4.12.24৷৷


রাঘবোপি Rama too, ভ্রাত্রা সহ along with brother, হনূমতা চ সহ also with Hanuman, বানরঃ Vanara, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, যত্র where, তত্ that, বনমেব to the grove, আগচ্ছত্ arrived.

Rama together with Lakshmana and Hanuman also arrived at the same gave where Sugriva was.
তং সমীক্ষ্যাগতং রামং সুগ্রীবস্সহলক্ষ্মণম্৷

হ্রীমান্দীনমুবাচেদং বসুধামবলোকযন্4.12.25৷৷


সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, আগতম্ coming in, সহলক্ষ্মণম্ along with Lakshmana, তং রামম্ that Rama, দৃষ্ট্বা seeing, হ্রীমান্ ashamed, বসুধাম্ ground, অবলোকযন্ looking down , দীনম্ piteously, ইদম্ this, উবাচ spoke.

At the sight of Rama accompanied by Lakshmana, Sugriva felt ashmed and aggrieved, and looking down on the ground, said:
আহ্বযস্বেতি মামুক্ত্বা দর্শযিত্বা চ বিক্রমম্৷

বৈরিণা ঘাতযিত্বা চ কিমিদানীং ত্বযা কৃতম্4.12.26৷৷


আহ্বযস্ব asked me to declare, ইতি thus, মাম্ me, উক্ত্বা after telling, বিক্রমম্ prowess, দর্শযিত্বা having demonstrated, বৈরিণা by the enemy, ঘাতযিত্বা had hit me, ত্বযা by you, ইদানীম্ this way, কিং কৃতম্ why did you do?

'You demonstrated your prowess and directed me to challenge Vali and then why did you make the enemy hit me thus?
তামেন বেলাং বক্তব্যং ত্বযা রাঘব! তত্ত্বতঃ৷

বালিনং ন নিহন্মীতি ততো নাহমিতো ব্রজে4.12.27৷৷


রাঘব Rama, তাং বেলামেব at that time, ত্বযা by you, বালিনম্ Vali, ন নিহন্মি I will not kill, ইতি thus, তত্ত্বতঃ truly, বক্তব্যম্ should have been said, ততঃ then, অহম্ I, ইতঃ from this place, ন ব্রজে would not have gone.

'Had you, in fact, told me that you were not going to kill Vali, I would not have budged from this place.'
তস্য চৈবং ব্রুবাণস্য সুগ্রীবস্য মহাত্মনঃ৷

করুণং দীনযা বাচা রাঘবঃ পুনরব্রবীত্4.12.28৷৷


মহাত্মনঃ great soul, তস্য সুগ্রীবস্য Sugriva's, দীনযা a piteous, বাচা by word, করুণম্ compasionately, এবম্ in that manner, ব্রুবাণস্য while he spoke, রাঘবঃ Rama, পুনঃ again, অব্রবীত্ said.

On hearing the great Sugriva's miserable and moving words, Rama again said:
সুগ্রীব! শ্রূযাতাং তাত! ক্রোধশ্চ ব্যপনীযতাম্৷

কারণং যেন বাণোযং ন মযা স বিসর্জিতঃ4.12.29৷৷


তাত! O dear, সুগ্রীব Sugriva, যেন why, সঃ অযম্ this, বাণঃ arrow, মযা by me, ন বিসর্জিতঃ not released, কারণম্ reason, শ্রূযতাম্ listen to me, ক্রোধঃ anger, ব্যপনীযতাং চ dispel.

'O dear Sugriva! dispel your anger and listen to me why I had not released the arrow.
অলঙ্কারেণ বেষেণ প্রমাণেন গতেন চ৷

ত্বং চ সুগ্রীব! বালী চ সদৃশৌ স্থঃ পরস্পরম্4.12.30৷৷


সুগ্রীব Sugriva, অলঙ্কারেণ in personal embelishment, বেষেণ in form, প্রমাণেন in appearance, গতেন চ in your movements, ত্বং চ your, বালী চ and Vali, পরস্পরম্ to each other, সদৃশৌ both similar, স্থঃ are.

'O Sugriva! in form, ornaments and movements there is perfect resemblance between you and Vali.
স্বরেণ বর্চসা চৈব প্রেক্ষিতেন চ বানর!৷

বিক্রমেণ চ বাক্যৈশ্চ ব্যক্তিং বাং নোপলক্ষযে4.12.31৷৷

'O monkey! in your voice, in brightness, in looks, in valour or in words I have marked no difference between you.

'O distinguished monkey! you both are so similar in form that I was puzzled and did not release my swift arrow that could have destroyed the enemy.

'I was doubtful because of your similar appearance. I thought that I should not strike at the very root of the interests of both of us. Therefore, I did not release the terrific and deadly arrow.

'O lord of monkeys! I would have betrayed my foolishness and childishness had I exposed you to danger by my ignorance and thoughtlessness.

is said to be, অহং চ I also, লক্ষ্মণশ্চৈব even Lakshmana, বরবর্ণিনী darling, সীতা চ Sita also, বযং সর্বে all of us, ত্বদধীনাঃ under your care, অস্মিন্ in this regard, ভবান্ you, শরণম্ refuge.

'It is said that killing a person to whom protection is promised is highly sinful. Lakshmana, darling Sita and me, are under your care and you are our refuge.

'O lord of monkeys! while you both are engaged in a duel wear some identification mark by which I can recognise you.
গজপুষ্পীমিমাং ফুল্লামুত্পাট্য শুভলক্ষণাম্৷

কুরু লক্ষ্মণ! কণ্ঠেস্য সুগ্রীবস্য মহাত্মনঃ৷৷4.12.39৷৷


লক্ষ্মণ Lakshmana, ইমাম্ these, ফুল্লাম্ flowers blossomed, শুভলক্ষণাম্ auspicious, গজপুষ্পীম্ Gajapushpi, উত্পাট্য plucking, মহাত্মনঃ of the great, অস্য সুগ্রীবস্য Sugriva's, কণ্ঠে in the neck, কুরু put on.

'O Lakshmana! this Gajapushpi in bloom is auspicious. Pluck and fasten it on great Sugriva's neck.'
ততো গিরিতটে জাতামুত্পাট্য কুসুমাকুলাম্৷

লক্ষ্মণো গজপুষ্পীং তাং তস্য কণ্ঠে ব্যসর্জযত্4.12.40৷৷


ততঃ then, লক্ষ্মণঃ Lakshmana, গিরিতটে on the slope of the mountain, জাতাম্ growing, কুসুমাযুতাম্ flowering, তাং গজপুষ্পীম্ those gajapushpi blossoms, উত্পাট্য plucked, তস্য his, কণ্ঠে on the neck, ব্যসর্জযত্ fastened on.

Then Lakshmana went to the mountain slope, plucked the (creeper with) gajapuspi blossoms and fastened it on the neck of Sugriva.
স তযা শুশুভে শ্রীমান্ লতযা কণ্ঠসক্তযা৷

মালযেব বলাকানাং সসন্ধ্য ইব তোযদঃ4.12.41৷৷


শ্রীমান্ lucky, সঃ Sugriva, কণ্ঠসক্তযা by that on the neck, তযা লতয by that creeper, সসন্ধ্যঃ at twilight, তোযদঃ rain cloud, বলাকানাম্ of cranes, মালযেব like a garland, শুশুভে glowed.

With the creeper round the neck, Sugriva looked like the rain-cloud at twilight, adorned by a row of cranes like a garland.

জগাম সহ রামেণ কিষ্কিন্থাং বালিপালিতাম্4.12.42৷৷
