অথ তস্য নিনাদং তং সুগ্রীবস্য মহাত্মনঃ৷

শুশ্রাবান্তঃ পুর গতো বালী ভ্রাতুরমর্ষণঃ4.15.1৷৷


অথ then, মহাত্মনঃ venerable, ভ্রাতুঃ brother, তস্য সুগ্রীবস্য Sugriva's, তং নিনাদম্ that sound, আন্তঃপুরগতঃ into the inner chambers, অমর্ষণঃ indignant, বালী Vali, শুশ্রাব heard.

The indignant Vali, who was in the harem, heard the roaring of his venerable brother, Sugriva.
শ্রুত্বা তু তস্য নিনদং সর্বভূতপ্রকম্পনম্৷

মদশ্চৈকপদে নষ্টঃ ক্রোধশ্চাপতিতো মহান্4.15.2৷৷

The roar (of Sugriva) that frightened all beings gave Vali's vanity a jolt and at once aroused in him violent rage.

Overcome with anger, Vali looked pale like the eclipsed Sun with the golden radiance faded from his face.

Vali, who looked fierce with his teeth and whose eyes shone like a flaming fire through anger looked like a pond with the lotuses and their stalks uprooted.

বেগেন চরণন্যাসৈর্দারযন্নিব মেদিনীম্4.15.5৷৷

Unable to tolerate Sugriva's roar, Vali stepped out hurriedly, taking long strides as if breaking the earth.

Tara, perplexed out of fear, glanced at Vali lovingly, embraced him and gave him wise counsel:
সাধু ক্রোধমিমং বীর নদীবেগমিবাগতম্৷

শযনাদুত্থিতঃ কাল্যং ত্যজ ভুক্তামিব স্রজম্4.15.7৷৷


বীর valiant Vali, নদীবেগমিব like the flood of river, আগতম্ come, ইমম্ this, ক্রোধম্ with anger, কাল্যম্ entertained at this time, শযনাত্ from bed, উত্থিতঃ got up, ভুক্তাম্ used up, স্রজমিব like a flower garland, সাধু the wise, ত্যজ give up.

'O valiant Vali! anger has overtaken you like the flood of a river. It is natural for you to be angry at this time, but shake off your anger just as the wise discard a flower garland already used up.
কাল্যমেতেন সঙ্গ্রামং করিষ্যসি চ বানর!৷

বীর! তে শত্রুবাহুল্যং ফল্গুতা বা ন বিদ্যতে4.15.8৷৷


বানর! monkey, এতেন with him, কাল্যম্ tomorrow morning, সঙ্গ্রামম্ fight, করিষ্যসি wish to wage, বীর hero, তে to you, শত্রুবাহুল্যম্ respect enemy more, ফল্গুতা বা weak also, ন বিদ্যতে not become

'O monkey! fight him only tomorrow morning. By this you are not going to prove your weakness or increase your respect for the enemy.
সহসা তব নিষ্ক্রামো মম তাবন্ন রোচতে৷

শ্রূযতাং চাভিধাস্যামি যন্নিমিত্তং নিবার্যসে4.15.9৷৷


সহসা rashly, তব you, নিষ্ক্রামঃ exit, মম for me, ন রোচতে তাবম্ do not feel good, যন্নিমিত্তম্ for what reason, নিবার্যসে you are prevented, অভিধাস্যামি I will explain, শ্রূযতাম্ listen.

'I do not like your rashness. I will explain the reason I am preventing you. Listen:
পূর্বমাপতিতঃ ক্রোধাত্স ত্বামাহ্বযতে যুধি৷

নিষ্পত্য চ নিরস্তস্তে হন্যমানো দিশো গতঃ4.15.10৷৷

'Earlier, he (Sugriva) came and challenged you to a duel. You struck him in anger, and defeated, he fled, running in all directions. Now his challenge rouses my suspicion.

ইহৈত্য পুনরাহ্বানং শঙ্কাং জনযতীব মে4.15.11৷৷


ত্বযা by you, নিরস্তস্য defeated by you, বিশেষতঃ specially, পীডিতস্য hurt by you, তস্য his, ইহ here, পুনঃ again, এত্য after coming, আহ্বানম্ inviting you, মে to me, শঙ্কাম্ suspicion, জনযতীব arouses.

'One who is defeated and badly mauled by you is again coming and inviting you to a duel in this manner arouses suspicion in me.
দর্পশ্চ ব্যবসাযশ্চ যাদৃশস্তস্য নর্দতঃ৷

নিনাদশ্চাপি সংরম্ভো নৈতদল্পং হি কারণম্4.15.12৷৷


নর্দতঃ roaring, তস্য his, দর্পশ্চ and his arrogance, ব্যবসাযশ্চ determination also, নিনাদস্য roaring, সংরম্ভঃ insolence, এতত্ all this, অল্পম্ small, কারণম্ cause, ন হি cannot be.

'His determination, his insolence, his roaring, his arrogance-all this cannot be for a small reason.
নাসহাযমহং মন্যে সুগ্রীবং তমিহাগতম্৷

অবষ্টব্ধসহাযশ্চ যমাশ্রিত্যৈষ গর্জতি4.15.13৷৷


ইহ here, আগতম্ came, তং সুগ্রীবম্ that Sugriva, অসহাযম্ without any help, ন মন্যে not think so, অবষ্টব্ধসহায certainly sought refuge, যম্ big, আশ্রিত্য having taken help, এষঃ he, গর্জতি is roaring.

'Certainly Sugriva has not come here to give a war-cry without any external help. The
person whose refuge he has sought is not a small one.
প্রকৃত্যা নিপুণশ্চৈব বুদ্ধিমাংশ্চৈব বানরঃ৷

অপরীক্ষিতবীর্যেণ সুগ্রীবস্সহনৈষ্যতি৷৷4.15.14৷৷


প্রকৃত্যা নিপুণশ্চৈব naturally a clever, বুদ্ধিমাংশ্চৈব wise person, বানরঃ monkey, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, অপরীক্ষিতবীর্যেণ without testing the ability of the ally, সখ্যম্ friendship ন এষ্যতি will not make

'Sugriva is clever by nature. He is wise. Without assessing the ability of the ally he will not enter into friendship.
পূর্বমেব মযা বীর! শ্রুতং কথযতো বচঃ৷

অঙ্গদস্য কুমারস্য বক্ষ্যামিত্বা হিতং বচঃ4.15.15৷৷


বীর O hero, পূর্বমেব earlier, কথযতঃ what he spoke, কুমারস্য from the son, অঙ্গদস্য of Angada, বচঃ news, ময by me, শ্রুতম্ heard, হিতম্ good, বচঃ words, অদ্য now, বক্ষ্যামি ত্বা will tell you.

'O hero! I have heard the news earlier from our son Angada. I will tell you what he had heard and what he has said to me:
অঙ্গদস্তু কুমারোযং বনান্তমুপনির্গতঃ৷

প্রবৃত্তিস্তেন কথিতা চারৈ রাপ্তৈর্নিবেদিতা4.15.16৷৷


কুমারঃ son, অযম্ অঙ্গদঃ this Angada, বনান্তম্ to the forest, উপনির্গতঃ had gone, তেন by him, প্রবৃত্তি: news, কথিতা narrated, চারৈঃ by spies, নিবেদিতা revealed.

'When our son Angada was out into the forest he had collected some reports from the spies which he has transmitted to me.
অযোধ্যাধিপতেঃ পুত্রৌ শূরৌ সমরদুর্জযৌ৷

ইক্ষ্বাকূণাং কুলে জাতৌ প্রথিতৌ রামলক্ষ্মণৌ4.15.17৷৷

সুগ্রীবপ্রিযকামার্থং প্রাপ্তৌ তত্র দুরাসদৌ৷


ইক্ষ্বাকূণাম্ of Ikshvaku, কুলে race, জাতৌ both born, অযোধ্যাধিপতেঃ king of Ayodhya, পুত্রৌ sons, শূরৌ two heroic, সমরদুর্জযৌ inviacible in war, রামলক্ষ্মণৌ Rama and Lakshmana, প্রস্থিতৌ both had, দুরাসদৌ both unconquerable, সুগ্রীবপ্রিযকামার্থম্ to please Sugriva, তত্র there, প্রাপ্তৌ came.

'Rama and Lakshmana, two heroic sons of the king of Ayodhya born of the Ikshvaku race, are invincible in war. They have come there to help Sugriva.
তব ভ্রাতুর্হি বিখ্যাতস্সহাযো রণকর্কশঃ৷

রামঃ পরবলামর্দী যুগান্তাগ্নিরিবোত্থিতঃ4.15.18৷৷


রণকর্কশঃ crushing the foes in war, বিখ্যাতঃ famous man, উত্থিতঃ sprung up, যুগান্তাগ্নিরিব like fire at the end of creation, পরবলামর্দী who slayed strong enemies like Khara, সঃ রামঃ that Rama, তে your, ভ্রাতুঃ brother's, সহাযঃ হি will help.

'Rama, famous for crushing foes in war, like the fire that breaks out at the dissolution of the world, has slain strong enemies like Khara and will help your brother.
নিবাসবৃক্ষঃ সাধূনামাপন্নানাং পরা গতিঃ৷

আর্তানাং সংশ্রযশ্চৈব যশসশ্চৈকভাজনম্4.15.19৷৷


সাধূনাম্ to the virtuous people, নিবাসবৃক্ষঃ a sheltering tree, আপন্নানাম্ to the destitutes, পরা supreme, গতিঃ refuge, আর্তানাম্ to the distressed, সংশ্রযশ্চৈব protector, যশসঃ fame, একভাজনম্ sole repository.

'He is like a sheltering tree to the virtuous, an ultimate refuge for the destitutes and a protector of the distressed. He is the sole repository of fame.
জ্ঞানবিজ্ঞানসম্পন্নো নিদেশে নিরতঃ পিতুঃ৷

ধাতূনামিব শৈলেন্দ্রো গুণানামাকরো মহান্4.15.20৷৷


জ্ঞানবিজ্ঞানসম্পন্নঃ endowed with knowledge of scriptures science and, পিতুঃ father's, নিদেশে at the command, স্থিতঃ stood by, শৈলেন্দ্রঃ lord of mountains, ধাতূনামিব like the mine of minerals, গুণানাম্ for all virtues, মহান্ great, আকরঃ a mine.

'He is endowed with the knowledge of science and scriptures. He stood by his father's command. He is like a mine of virtues just as the lord of the mountain is a mine of minerals.
তত্ক্ষমং ন বিরোধস্তে সহ তেন মহাত্মনা৷

দুর্জযেনাপ্রমেযেন রামেণ রণকর্মসু4.15.21৷৷


তত্ therefore, মহাত্মনা great, রণকর্মসু in war, দুর্জযেন unconquerable, অপ্রমেযেন of immeasurable, তেন রামেণ by that Rama, তে to you, বিরোধঃ enmity, ন ক্ষমম্ not desirable.

'Rama is immeasurable in prowess and unconquerable in war. Therefore, enmity with him is not desirable for you.
শূর! বক্ষ্যামি তে কিঞ্চিন্ন চেচ্ছাম্যভ্যসূযিতুম্৷

শ্রূযতাং ক্রিযতাং চৈব তব বক্ষ্যামি যদ্ধিতম্4.15.22৷৷


শূর valiant, তে to you, কিঞ্চিত্ a little, বক্ষ্যামি I will tell, অভ্যসূযিতুম্ not to dislike you, ন ইচ্ছামি not intend to, তব your, হিতম্ welfare, যত্ বক্ষ্যামি telling for your sake, শ্রূযতাম্ please listen, ক্রিযতাং চ do as I say.

'O hero, this I tell you not because I dislike you, but because I wish your welfare. Listen, and do as I say
যৌবরাজ্যেন সুগ্রীবং তূর্ণং সাধ্বভিষেচয৷

বিগ্রহং মা কৃথা বীর! ভ্রাত্রা রাজন্বলীযসা4.15.23৷৷


বীর hero, রাজন্ king, ত্বম্ you, তূর্ণম্ swiftly, সুগ্রীবম্ Sugriva, যৌবরাজ্যেন you may consecrate, অভিষেচয on consecration, যবীযসা with an younger one, ভ্রাত্রা brother, বিগ্রহম্ enmity, মা কৃথা do not have.

'O king! O hero! consecrate your brother Sugriva as prince at once. Do not create enmity with him.
অহং হি তে ক্ষমং মন্যে তেন রামেণ সৌহৃদম্৷

সুগ্রীবেণ চ সম্প্রীতিং বৈরমুত্সৃজ্য দূরতঃ4.15.24৷৷


বৈরম্ enmity, দূরতঃ to a distance, উত্সৃজ্য shed, সুগ্রীবেণ with Sugriva, সম্প্রীতিম্ love, তেন রামেণ with Rama, সৌহৃদম্ friendship, তে to you, ক্ষমম্ is the right, অহম্ I, মন্যে I think.

'Leave enmity with Sugriva far behind. Make friendship with Rama. I think it is the right thing for you.
লালনীযো হি তে ভ্রাতা যবীযানেষ বানরঃ৷

তত্র বা সন্নিহস্থো বা সর্বথা বন্ধুরেব তে4.15.25৷৷


যবীযান্ ভ্রাতা he is your younger brother, এষঃ বানরঃ this monkey, তে to you, লালনীযঃ হি deserves your protection, তত্র there, সন্ বা ইহস্থো বা whether he is here(at kishkinda) or there (at Rishyamuka), সর্বথা all means, তে your, বন্ধুরেব relation.

'This monkey is your younger brother and, therefore, deserves your protection. Whether he is here or there, he is your brother.
ন হি তেন সমং বন্ধুং ভুবি পশ্যামি কঞ্চন4.15.26৷৷

দানমানাদিসত্কারৈঃ কুরুষ্ব প্রত্যনন্তরম্৷

বৈরমেতত্সমুত্সৃজ্য তব পার্শ্বে স তিষ্ঠতু4.15.27৷৷


তেন with him, সমম্ equal, বন্ধুম্ relation, কঞ্চন whoever, ভুবি on this earth, ন পশ্যামি হি I do not see, এতত্ this, বৈরম্ enmity, সমুত্সৃজ্য give up, দানমানাদিসত্কারৈঃ by honouring him, by giving wealth and respect, প্রত্যনন্তরম্ after that, কুরুষ্ব you may do, সঃ he, তব your, পার্শ্বে by the side, তিষ্ঠতু remain.

'Indeed I do not see any of your relatives comparable to him on earth. Give up enmity with him. Give him wealth. Give him respect. Keep him by your side.
সুগ্রীবো বিপুলগ্রীবস্তববন্ধুস্সদা মতঃ৷

ভ্রাতৃস্সৌহৃদমালম্ব নান্যা গতিরিহাস্তি তে4.15.28৷৷


বিপুলগ্রীবঃ broad-necked, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, তব your, মহাবন্ধুঃ great relation, মতঃ your, ভ্রাতৃসৌহৃদম্ brotherly affection, আলম্ব you extend, তে to you, ইহ now, অন্যাগতিঃ alternative, নাস্তি no

'Extend your brotherly affection to broad-necked Sugriva. He is always your great relation. There is no alternative for you other than this at present.
যদি তে মত্প্রিযং কার্যং যদি চাবৈষি মাং হিতাম্৷

যাচ্যমানঃ প্রযত্নেন সাধু বাক্যং কুরুষ্ব মে4.15.29৷৷


তে to you, মত্প্রিযম্ a favour to me, কার্যং যদি if it is going to be done, মাম্ me, হিতাম্ a good counsel, অবেষি যদি if you treat me so, প্রযত্নেন by the effort, যাচ্যমানঃ pray you, মে my, বাক্যম্ words, সাধু please, কুরুষ্ব heed.

'Pray, do me this favour. Treat me as your well-wisher. Heed my advice given with care.
প্রসীদ পথ্যং শৃণু জল্পিতং হি মে

ন রোষ মেবানুবিধাতুমর্হসি৷

ক্ষমো হি তে কোসলরাজসূনুনা

ন বিগ্রহশ্শক্রসমানতেজসা4.15.30৷৷


প্রসীদ quieten your mind, মে my, পথ্যম্ beneficial, জল্পিতং word, শৃণু listen, রোষমেব only anger, অনুবিধাতুম্ follow, ন অর্হসি you should not, শক্রসমানতেজসা resembling Indra in splendour, কোসলরাজসূনুনা with the prince of the kingdom of Kosala, তে you, বিগ্রহঃ enmity, ন ক্ষমঃ হি not fit for you.

'Do not lose your temper. Quieten your mind. My advice is beneficial to you. You should not fight with the prince of Kosala who is comparable to Indra in splendour.It is not proper for you.'
তদা হি তারা হিতমেব বাক্যং

তং বালিনং পথ্যমিদং বভাষে৷

ন রোচতে তদ্বচনং হি তস্য

কালাভিপন্নস্য বিনাশকালে4.15.31৷৷


তদা then, তারা Tara, তং বালিনম্ to Vali, হিতম্ counsel, পথ্যম্ beneficial, ইদং বাক্যম্ these words, বভাষে spoke, কালাভিপন্নস্য influenced by bad time, তস্য his, বিনাশকালে at the time of destruction, তত্ বচনম্ those words, ন রোচতে not liking.

Even though Tara gave good counsel to Vali at the hour of destruction, the advice did not find favour with him as he was under the influence of unfavourable time (seized by death).
