[Tara's counsel to Vali --- fight between Vali and Sugriva --- Rama observes Sugriva's plight in the duel --- shoots an arrow at Vali.]

তামেবং ব্রুবতীং তারাং তারাধিপনিভাননাম্৷

বালী নির্ভর্ত্সযামাস বচনং চেদমব্রবীত্4.16.1৷৷


এবম্ thus, ব্রুবতীম্ speaking, তারাধিপনিভাননাম্ Moon-like face, তাং তারাম্ to such a Tara, বালী Vali, নির্ভর্ত্সযামাস reproached, ইদম্ these, বচনং চ words, অব্রবীত্ spoke

To these words of Tara with her Moon-like face, Vali replied reproachfully:
গর্জতোস্য চ সুসম্ভ্রশ্চ ভ্রাতুঃ শত্রোর্বিশেষতঃ৷

মর্ষযিষ্যাম্যহং কেন কারণেন বরাননে!4.16.2৷৷


বরাননে! O lady with a charming face, ভ্রাতুঃ brother, বিশেষতঃ especially, শত্রোঃ enemy, অস্য his, সুসম্রব্ধম্ excitement, গর্জতঃ as he roars, কেন কারণেন for what reason, মর্ষযিষ্যামি should I tolerate?

'O lady with a charming face! why should I tolerate the enemy (Sugriva) who is none other than my own younger brother, especially when he roars excitedly?
অধর্ষিতানাং শূরাণাং সমরেষ্বনিবর্তিনাম্৷

ধর্ষণামর্ষণং ভীরু! মরণাদতিরিচ্যতে4.16.3৷৷


ভীরু O timid lady, সমরেষু in combat, অনিবর্তিনাম্ for those who do not turn back, অধর্ষিতানাম্ for the invincible, শূরাণাম্ for heroes, ধর্ষণামর্ষণম্ to endure insult, মরণাত্ more than death, অতিরিচ্যতে is worse

O timid lady! to swallow insult (without facing the opponent) is worse than death for
indomitable heroes (like me) who know no retreat in a battle.

অহম্ I am, সংযুগে in battle, যুদ্ধকামস্য desiring to fight, হীনগ্রীবস্য of the weak-necked, গর্জতঃ who roars, সুগ্রীবস্য of Sugriva, সম্রম্ভম্ flurry, সোঢুম্ to tolerate, ন সমর্থঃ not right

'When the weak-necked Sugriva roars eager to join a duel it is not right on my part to tolerate his arrogance,much less his war-cry.

ধর্মজ্ঞশ্চ কৃতজ্ঞশ্চ কথং পাপং করিষ্যতি4.16.5৷৷


মত্কৃতে for me, রাঘবং প্রতি with respect to Rama, তে to you, বিষাদঃ worry, ন কার্যঃ no need, ধর্মজ্ঞশ্চ for a knower of dharma, কৃতজ্ঞশ্চ a grateful person, পাপম্ sin, কথম্ how, করিষ্যতি will he do

'You need not be concerned about me on account of Rama. How can one who knows dharma and who has a sense of gratitude commit sin?
নিবর্তস্ব সহ স্ত্রীভিঃ কথং ভূযোনুগচ্ছসি৷

সৌহৃদং দর্শিতং তারে! মযি ভক্তি: কৃতা ত্বযা4.16.6৷৷


স্ত্রীভিঃ সহ along with women, নিবর্তস্ব you may return, ভূযঃ again, কথম্ how, অনুগচ্ছসি following, ত্বযা by you, সৌহৃদম্ concern, দর্শিতং (তাবত্) shown by you, মযি to me, ভক্তিঃ devotion, কৃতা is fixed

'Go back with all the women of the harem. Why do you follow me again? Your devotion towards me is evident from the sincere concern expressed by you.

অহম্ I am, গত্বা after going, সুগ্রীবম্ Sugriva, প্রতিযোত্স্যামি will fight accepting his challenge, সম্ভ্রমম্ anxiety, জহি give up, অস্য his, দর্পমাত্রং pride, বিনেষ্যামি I will subdue, প্রাণৈঃ with life, ন বিমোক্ষ্যতে not be relieved

'I shall accept the challenge and fight with Sugriva. Give up your anxiety. I will destroy his pride, not his life.

'When he faces me in the battlefield, I will hit him with trees and fists, and he will run back for life.

কৃতং তারে! সহাংযত্বং সৌহৃদং দর্শিতং মযি4.16.9৷৷

'That evil-minded Sugriva cannot bear my mighty, hard blows. Tara! you could shower your affection on me and extend help (in passing secret information obtained through Angada);

'I make a vow even on my life and my victory. Pray return with the retinue. I will be back only after winning the encounter with my brother.

Pleasing in her words, Tara then embraced Vali and sobbing, circumambulated Vali in compliance (to his advice).

অন্তঃপুরং সহ স্ত্রীভিঃ প্রবিষ্টা শোকমোহিতা4.16.12৷৷


ততঃ then, মন্ত্রবিত্ a lady well-versed in mantras, বিজযৈষিণী a lady who wished victory, স্বস্ত্যযনম্ hailing, কৃত্বা uttering, শোকমোহিতা overwhelmed with sorrow, স্ত্রীভিঃ সহ along with women, অন্তঃপুরম্ inner apartments, প্রবিষ্টা entered

The wise counsellor, Tara bade him farewell, wishing him victory and then, overwhelmed with sorrow, entered the inner apartment followed by the women-folk.

তারাযাম্ when Tara, স্ত্রীভিস্সহ along with women, স্বম্ her, আলযম্ abode, প্রবিষ্টাযাম্ after she entered, কুদ্দঃ angry , মহাসর্প ইব like a huge serpent, শ্বসন্ breathing, নগরাত্ from the city, নির্যযৌ came out.

After Tara and other women returned to their abode, Vali departed from the city, hissing like a huge angry cobra.

The mighty Vali, breathing heavily, looked around to find where his enemy was.

There Vali saw Sugriva in lustrous, red gold complexion standing ready for a combat steady like glowing fire.

On seeing the great hero Sugriva standing firmly, the enraged Vali tied his upper cloth (around his loin) tightly.

Vali tied up his cloth tightly, raised his fist and advanced towards Sugriva, ready for the encounter.

Sugriva also lifted his fist firmly and advanced more impatiently towards Vali adorned with a golden necklace.

While Sugriva, expert in combat, advanced swiftly to pounce upon (his enemy), Vali whose eyes turned red in anger said:

মযা বেগবিমুক্তস্তে প্রাণানাদায যাস্যতি4.16.20৷৷


সন্নিসতাঙ্গুলিঃ closely held fingers, গাঢঃ tight, এষঃ this, বদ্ধঃ মহান্ clenched and big. মুষ্টিঃ fist, মযা by me, বেগবিমুক্তঃ hit with formidable speed, তে your, প্রাণান্ life, আদায on taking out, যাস্যতি will move away

This infuriated Sugriva who, looking at Vali, said 'This fist of mine will draw your life out, hitting your forehead'.

Struck by Vali, enraged Sugriva encountered Vali more aggresively. His body drenched in blood seemed a mountain with rivulets of blood flowing.
সুগ্রীবেণ তু নিস্সঙ্গং সালমুত্পাট্য তেজসা৷

গাত্রেষ্বভিহতো বালী বজ্রেণেব মহাগিরিঃ4.16.23৷৷


সুগ্রীবেণ তু by Sugriva also, তেজসা with vigour, নিস্সঙ্গম্ pulled out, সালম্ sala tree, উত্পাট্য uprooted, বজ্রেণ with the thunderbolt, মহাগিরিঃ ইব like a huge mountain, গাত্রেষু on the body, অভিহতঃ struck.

With all his vigour, Sugriva uprooted a sala tree, pulled it out and struck Vali on the body, like a thunderbolt striking a huge mountain.

Struck by the blows of the sala tree, Vali also lost his balance like the heavily loaded ship of a trader shaken up in the ocean.

ভীমবলবিক্রান্তৌ of terrific strength, সুপর্ণসমবেগিনৌ both as fast as Suparna (Garuda), ঘোরবপুষৌ both of fierce appearance, পরস্পরম্ each other, ছিদ্রান্বেষণতত্পরৌ both searching the weak points of the other, অমিত্রঘ্নৌ both striking and trying to win over the other, তৌ both, অম্বরে in the sky, চন্দ্রসূর্যাবিব like Sun and Moon, প্রবৃদ্ধৌ both grew

Both of them endowed with terrible strength, fierce in appearance, and each seeking the weak points of the other advanced, as fast as Garuda, striking at the enemy. Their fight grew more and more fierce like the fight between Sun and Moon in the sky.

ততঃ then, বলবীর্যসমন্বিতঃ endowed with strength and valour, বালী Vali, অবর্ধত he grew, মহাবীর্যঃ mighty, সূর্যপুত্রঃ Sun's son, সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, পরিহীযতে becomes weak

In a short while Vali, endowed with great strength, gained the upper hand and Sugriva, son of the Sun-god, was losing ground .

With his strength waning and pride crushed, Sugriva, anguished, exhibited shrewdness.

তযোঃ both, বৃক্ষৈঃ with trees, সশাখৈঃ with branches, শিখরৈঃ with tops, বজ্রকোটিনিভৈঃ by those hard as tips of thunderbolts, নখৈঃ with nails, মুষ্টিভিঃ with fists, পদ্ভিঃ with feet, জানুভিঃ with knees, বৃত্রবাসবযোরিব like Vritra and Indra, পুনঃ পুনঃ again and again, ঘোরম্ terrible, যুদ্ধম্ combat, অভূত্ became.

Both like Vritra and Indra fought, hitting each other again and again with trees full of branches and tops, with their hard nails akin to thunderbolts and with their fists, knees, feet, etc.

বনচারিণৌ wanderers of the forest, তৌ both of them, বানরৌ monkeys, শোণিতাক্তৌ both with blood stains, পরস্পরম্ at each other, মহাশব্দৈঃ producing loud sound, মেঘাবিব like two clouds, তর্জমানৌ pointing at each other, যুধ্যেতাম্ clashed

The monkeys, wanderers in the forest, both with blood stains fiercely clashed pointing at each other, roaring with dreadful sounds like two clouds.
হীযমানমথোপশ্যত্সুগ্রীবং বানরেশ্বরম্৷

বীক্ষমাণং দিশশ্চৈব রাঘবস্স মুহুর্মুহুঃ4.16.31৷৷


অথ then, সঃ রাঘবঃ Rama, মুহুর্মুহুঃ again and again, দিশঃ different directions, বীক্ষমাণম্ glancing, বানরেশ্বরম্ lord of monkeys, সুগ্রীবং Sugriva, হীযমানম্ waning (in strength), অপশ্যত্ observed

Raghava perceived that the monkey king Sugriva whose strength was waning was looking again and again in all directions (seeking help).

Finding the king of the monkeys in distress, the heroic, brilliant Rama looked for an arrow in order to kill Vali.

ততঃ then, আশীবিষোপমম্ poisonous like a snake, শরম্ arrow, ধনুষি at the bow, সন্ধায having fixed, অন্তকঃ lord of death, কালচক্রমিব like the wheel of death, তত্ চাপম্ that bow, পুরযামাস stretched at fully.

Rama then fixed an arrow which resembled a venomous snake, on to his bow looking like the very death-wheel of Yama and stretched it fully.

As if scared by the twang of the bowstring, winged and feathered birds and animals ran frightened in different directions.
মুক্তস্তু বজ্রনির্ঘোষ: প্রদীপ্তাশনিসন্নিভঃ৷

রাঘবেণ মহাবাণো বালিবক্ষসি পাতিতঃ4.16.35৷৷


রাঘবেণ by Rama, মুক্তঃ released, বজ্রনির্ঘোষঃ sounding like the thunderbolt, প্রদীপ্তাশনিসন্নিভঃ like blazing lightning, মহাবাণঃ mighty arrow, বালিবক্ষসি into the chest of Vali, পাতিতঃ pierced

As Rama shot the mighty arrow, it went like a blazing lightning with a thunderous sound and pierced into the chest of Vali.

Then the powerful monkey king Vali, who was proud of his might, fell down on earth, struck by the fast flying arrow.

আশ্বযুক্সমযে in the month of Aswayuja, মাসি in a month, পৌর্ণমাস্যাম্ on the full Moon day, মহীতলে on the earth, উদ্ধূতঃ was thrown down, ইন্দ্রধ্বজ ইব like Indra's staff, বালী Vali, গতশ্রীকো lost his brilliance, বিচেতনঃ fell unconscious

Vali fell lustreless on the ground. He was thrown down unconscious like the banner (hoisted in honour) of Indra on the fullmoon day of Aswayuja month.
