গুহং প্রবিষ্টে সুগ্রীবে বিমুক্তে গগনে ঘনৈঃ৷

বর্ষরাত্রোষিতো রামঃ কামশোকাভিপীডিতঃ4.30.1৷৷

পাণ্ডুরং গগনং দৃষ্ট্বা বিমলং চন্দ্রমণ্ডলম্৷

শারদীং রজনীং চৈব দৃষ্ট্বা জ্যোত্স্নানুলেপনাম্4.30.2৷৷

সুগ্রীবে (when) Sugriva, গুহম্ residence, প্রবিষ্টে entered, গগনে into the sky, ঘনৈঃ heavy clouds, বিমুক্তে is cleared, বর্ষরাত্রে rainy night, কামশোকাভিপীডিতঃ agonised out of love, রামঃ Rama, পাণ্ডুরম্ pale white, গগনম্ sky, বিমলম্ clear, চন্দ্রমণ্ডলম্ orb of the Moon, দৃষ্ট্বা seeing, জ্যোত্স্নানুলেপনাম্ covered with bright moonlight, শারদীম্ of autumn, রজনীং চৈব night like, বুদ্ধ্বা known, কামবৃত্তম্ engaged in love, সুগ্রীবম্ Sugriva, নষ্টাম্ lost, জনকাত্মজাং চ Janaka's daughter, অতীতম্ exceeded, কালম্ time, দৃষ্ট্বা seeing, পরমাতুরঃ perturbed, মুমোহ চ swooned.

While Sugriva was in his residence, Rama was (in Prasravana mountain) spending his rainy nights tormented by passion (for Sita). Sugriva was engaged in love, forgetting the time fixed for taking up the search for Sita. When the sky became clear of clouds after the rainy season, Rama sat gazing at the clear autumnal Moon's orb. He was besmeared with moon-light and felt perturbed as time was running out. And then fell into a swoon. (only a few months remained for the completion of the exile and Bharata will put an end to himself if Rama does not return to Ayodhya on the stipulated day. This worried Rama.)

Gaining back the senses after a while, wise Rama started thinking about Vaidehi, who remained in his heart.

Sitting on top of the mountain shining with gold and minerals, Rama gazed at the pleasant autumnal sky and started thinking of his beloved.

Looking at the sky rid of clouds and lightning, filled with the sounds of flocks of sarasa birds, Rama cried in a pitiable state.

'How will the young lady (Sita) whose voice is like the sarasa bird's, who was revelling, listening to its sweet cackle at the hermitage be living now?

'Even though I am wandering by lakes, rivers, wells, forests and groves,I am not happy without that fawn-eyed lady.

'I think even the charm of autumn must be always tormenting that lovely lady, as she is very far from me. She is too delicate to suffer the agony of separation.'

Thus the best among the princes wailed just as chakrabaka laments for water from
Indra, lord of the gods.

দদর্শ পর্যুপাবৃত্তো লক্ষ্মীবান্লক্ষ্মণোগ্রজম্4.30.14৷৷


ততঃ then, ফলার্থী for getting fruits, রম্যেষু from the beautiful, গিরিসানুষু the mountain slopes, চঞ্চূর্য went about looking, পর্যুপাবৃত্তঃ going round and round, লক্ষ্মীবান্ graceful man, লক্ষ্মণঃ Lakshmana, অগ্রজম্ elder brother, দদর্শ saw.

Graceful Lakshmana returned after going round and round the beautiful mountain slopes for fruits and saw his brother.

Observing Rama who had lost his senses, lying alone in unbearable agony, venerable Lakshmana became sad and miserable and spoke to his brother:

'O revered brother! why do you succumb to passion and loss of self-confidence? Why is the usual composure of your mind withdrawn? Why do you desist from yaga?

অদীনসত্ত্ব: an undaunted warrior, ক্রিযাভিযোগম্ make efforts to work, মনসঃ mind's, প্রসাদম্ serenity, সমাধিযোগানুগতম্ followed by contemplative mood, কালং চ taking advantage of time, সহাযসামর্থ্যম্ strength of effort, হেতুম্ cause, স্বকর্ম চ by your own effort, হেতুম্ cause of success, কুরুষ্ব achieve.

'You are an undaunted warrior. Take to the path of action. Resort to samadhiyoga or meditation and regain the serenity of mind. Make the strength of your effort the source of your success.

মানববংশনাথ O lord of the human race, ত্বযা by you, সনাথা protected , জানকী Janaki, পরেণ by any one, সুলভা easy to obtain, ন not, বীর hero, বরার্হ best, জ্বলিতাম্ blazing, অগ্নিচূডাম্ burning fire, উপেত্য after reaching, কচ্ছিত্ any one, ন দহ্যতে (ইতি) ন is not burnt.

'O lord of the human race! O worthy hero! when you are the protector, Janaki cannot be retained by any one easily just as burning fire after it reaches its full height cannot be retained by any one.'

Rama said to Lakshmana, an unassailable warrior with auspicious signs, that what he had spoken was natural, beneficial, wise and useful.It is in accordance with Sama Veda and the science of state-craft, well established in dharma and artha.

কুমার dear!, নিস্সংশযম্ no doubt, কার্যম্ the work, অবেক্ষিতব্যম্ should be considered, ক্রিযাবিশেষোহি and requires special attention, অনুবর্তিতব্যঃ should be followed, প্রবৃত্তস্য (of
the work) to be commenced, দুরাসদস্য of the unassailable, কার্যস্য of action, ফলং চ fruit also, চিন্ত্যং ননু surely need to think.

'My dear, there is no doubt that I have to consider the work (ahead), give special attention to follow up. Surely I need to think over this herculian task and its achievement'.

Then falling back on the memory of Maithili, the lady with eyes like lotus petals, he said to Lakshmana with parched lips:

নির্বর্তযিত্বা সস্যানি কৃতকর্মা ব্যবস্থিতঃ4.30.22৷৷


সহস্রাক্ষঃ thousand-eyed Indra, সলিলেন with water, বসুন্ধরাম্ the earth, তর্পযিত্বা having satisfied, সস্যানি crops, নির্বর্তযিত্বা brought back, কৃতকর্মা done his duty, ব্যবস্থিতঃ settled down.

'Having satisfied the earth with abundant rain water and having fulfilled the task of ripening the crops, the thousand-eyed Indra has done his duty, has settled down now.

বিসৃজ্য সলিলং মেঘাঃ পরিশ্রান্তা নৃপাত্মজ!4.30.23৷৷


নৃপাত্মজ! prince, স্নিগ্ধগম্ভীরনির্ঘোষাঃ with pleasing deep sound, শৈলদ্রুমপুরোগমাঃ wandering over trees on the mountains, মেঘাঃ clouds, সলিলম্ waters, বিসৃজ্য having showered,
পরিশ্রান্তাঃ exhausted.

'O prince! having discharged their water the clouds (after the rains) are exhausted. They are moving now over trees and mountains, making deep and pleasant sounds.
নীলোত্পলদলশ্যামাশ্শ্যামীকৃত্বা দিশো দশ৷

বিমদা ইব মাতঙ্গাশ্শান্তবেগাঃ পযোধরাঃ4.30.24৷৷


নীলোত্পলদলশ্যামা dark like the petals of blue lotuses, পযোধরাঃ rain-bearing clouds, দশ ten, দিশঃ directions, শ্যামীকৃত্বা having filled with darkness, বিমদাঃ devoid of intoxication, মাতঙ্গাঃ ইব like elephants, শান্তবেগাঃ became quiet.

'The clouds, which were dark till now like the blue lotus petals darkening all the ten directions are like elephants free from all intoxication as their fury is abated৷৷
জলগর্ভা মহামেঘা কুটজার্জুনগন্ধিনঃ৷

চরিত্বা বিরতাস্সৌম্য! বৃষ্টিবাতাস্সমুদ্যতাঃ4.30.25৷৷


সৌম্য O dear, জলগর্ভাঃ laden with water, মহামেঘাঃ huge clouds, কুটজার্জুনগন্ধিনঃ the fragrance of kutaja and arjuna flowers, সমুদ্যতাঃ are blowing, বৃষ্টিবাতাঃ winds carrying rain-water, চরিত্বা having moved, বিরতাঃ stopped.

'O dear! the moist winds have ceased to blow as before and are carrying the fragrance of kutaja and arjuna flowers.
ঘনানাং বারণানাং চ মযূরাণাং চ লক্ষ্মণ!৷

নাদঃ প্রস্রবণানাং চ প্রশান্তস্সহসানঘ4.30.26৷৷


অনঘ O sinless one, লক্ষ্মণ Lakshmana, ঘনানাম্ of heavy clouds, বারণানাং চ and of elephants, মযূরাণাং চ and peacocks, প্রস্রবণানাং চ and of waterfalls, নাদঃ sound, সহসা suddenly, প্রশান্তঃ stopped.

'O sinless Lakshmana! the rumblings of heavy clouds, the trumpeting of elephants, the cry of peacocks and the sound of waterfalls have become suddenly stilled.
অভিবৃষ্টা মহামেঘৈর্নির্মলাশ্চিত্রসানবঃ৷

অনুলিপ্তা ইবাভান্তি গিরযশ্চিত্রদীপ্তিভিঃ4.30.27৷৷


মহামেঘৈঃ with huge clouds, অভিবৃষ্টাঃ having showered rain, নির্মলাঃ clean, চিত্রসানবঃ peaks of different colours, গিরযঃ mountains, চিত্রদীপ্তিভিঃ glowing in variegated colours, অনুলিপ্তাঃ ইব as if smeared , আভান্তি appear.

'The mountain slopes, having been washed by the showers of rain on all sides, are cleansed. They are shining in variegated colours and look as though the mountain peaks are smeared with glowing colours (of minerals).

প্রভাসু তারার্কনিশাকরাণাম্৷

অদ্য now, শরত্ autumn, সপ্তচ্ছদপাদপানাম্ the seven-leafed banana, শাখাসু on their branches, তারার্কনিশাকরাণাম্ among stars, Sun and Moon, প্রভাসু in their radiance, উত্তমবারণানাম্ among the best of elephants, লীলাসু চ in their sporting, শ্রিযম্ grace, বিভজ্য divided, প্রবৃত্তা has set in.

'The autumn has set in, manifesting its grace on the branches of saptachada trees(seven-leafed banana plant) through the radiance of stars, Sun and Moon and through the sports of excellent elephants.

সম্প্রতি at present, অনেকাশ্রযচিত্রশোভা manifesting beauty in varied manner, শরত্কালগুণোপপন্না brought about by the merits of the season, লক্ষ্মীঃ goddess of wealth, সূর্যাগ্রহস্তপ্রতিবোধিতেষু touched by the rays of the Sun, পদ্মাকরেষু the lotuses, অধিকম্ exceedingly, বিভাতি shines.

'From the beauty of autumn manifested in a variety of ways on the clusters of lotuses, touched by the Sun, it seems the goddess of wealth shines and shines effulgently. (The lotus is goddess Laxmi's favourite flower)

'The wind carries the fragrance of saptachada flowers. Attracted by the fragrance, swarms of bees come humming. The pride of the elephants in rut increases.

'The swans have come face to face with chakravaka birds. They have newly arrived. Lovers of lakes, they are shaking the pollen of lotuses on their lovely wide wings and have settled on the sandy banks-sporting.

মদপ্রগল্ভেষু among the proud, বারণেষু among the elephants, দর্পিতেষু among the excited, গবাম্ of bulls, সমূহেষু among herds, প্রসন্নতোযাসু in the clear water, নিম্নগাসু চ in the streams, বহুধা severally, বিভক্তা divided, লক্ষ্মীঃ beauty, বিভাতি shining.

'Goddess Laxmi with her scattered self shines there among the proud elephants, among herds of excited bulls and among streams with clear water.

প্রিযাস্বসক্তা বিনিবৃত্তশোভা

বনেষু in the forests, মযূরাঃ peacocks, অম্বুধরৈঃ by the clouds, বিমুক্তম্ devoid, নভঃ sky, সমীক্ষ্য on seeing, বিমুক্তবর্হাভরণাঃ those who have shed their ornamental plumage, প্রিযাসু loved ones, অসক্তাঃ lost interest, বিনিবৃত্তশোভাঃ their glory withdrawn, গতোত্সবাঃ devoid of happiness, ধ্যানপরাঃ are absorbed.

'The sky is free from clouds. The peacocks have shed their ornamental plumes. They have lost interest in their beloveds. With their glory withdrawn, the peacocks are devoid of happiness and absorbed in the thought of the clouds.

'O gentle one, the four months of rainy season are spent without seeing Sita. It is equal to a hundred years for my grief-stricken heart.

'Just as a female chakravaka follows the male, Sita followed her husband into this dense Dandaka forest as though it is a pleasure-garden.
প্রিযাবিহীনে দুঃখার্তে হৃতরাজ্যে বিবাসিতে৷

কৃপাং ন কুরুতে রাজা সুগ্রীবো মযি লক্ষ্মণ4.30.66৷৷


লক্ষ্মণ O Lakshmana!, প্রিযাবিহীনে separated from wife, দুঃখার্তে a grief-stricken man, হৃতরাজ্যে lost kingdom, বিবাসিতে banished, মযি at me, রাজা সুগ্রীবঃ king Sugriva, কৃপাম্ mercy, ন কুরুতে not showing.

'O Lakshmana! king Sugriva shows no mercy on one, who is grief-stricken, separated from his wife, and banished from the kingdom.
অনাথো হৃতরাজ্যোযং রাবণেন চ ধর্ষিতঃ৷

দীনো দূরগৃহঃ কামী মাং চৈব শরণং গতঃ4.30.67৷৷

ইত্যেতৈঃ কারণৈস্সৌম্য! সুগ্রীবস্য দুরাত্মনঃ৷

সৌম্য gentle, পরন্তপ vanquisher of foes, অযম্ this person, অনাথঃ helpless, হৃতরাজ্যঃ lost kingdom, দীনঃ miserable, দূরগৃহঃ away from home, রাবণেন চ,by Ravana, ধর্ষিতঃ outraged,কামী love-sick, মাং চৈব me also, শরণং গতঃ sought help, ইত্যেতৈঃ by these, কারণৈঃ with reasons, দুরাত্মনঃ of the evil-minded, বানররাজস্য of the king of monkeys, সুগ্রীবস্য Sugriva's, অহম্ I am, পরিভূতঃ slighted.

'O gentle one! although I am a vanquisher of foes, this evil-minded king of monkeys is slighting me because I am away from home, I have lost my kingdom, I am outraged by Ravana, I am miserable and love-sick and I have sought his help.
স কালং পরিসঙ্খ্যায সীতাযাঃ পরিমার্গণে৷

কৃতার্থস্সমযং কৃত্বা দুর্মতির্নাববুধ্যতে4.30.69৷৷

'The evil-minded Sugriva, having fulfilled his objective, does not realise that he has made a promise to me and has reached the time set for the search of Sita.

'Go to Kishkinda and speak (on my behalf ) to that fool, Sugriva, the chief of monkeys who is revelling in habitual sensual pleasures

আশাং সংশ্রুত্য যো হন্তি স লোকে পুরুষাধমঃ4.30.71৷৷


উপপন্নানাম্ approached, পূর্বম্ earlier, উপকারিণাং চ and who has helped, অর্থিনাম্ the one who requested , সংশ্রুত্য with regard to, আশাম্ hopes, যঃ he who, হন্তি disappoints, সঃ he, লোকে on the earth, পুরুষাধম: lowest among men.

'He who, having promised to his friend to grant his desire and who, having been obliged, fails to implement the promise, is the lowest on earth.
শুভং বা যদি বা পাপং যো হি বাক্যমুদীরিতম্৷

সত্যেন প্রতিগৃহ্ণাতি স বীরঃ পুরুষোত্তমঃ4.30.72৷৷


যঃ হি he who, শুভং বা good or, যদি বা or else, পাপম্ sin, উদীরিতম্ which has been promised, বাক্যম্ words, সত্যেন truly, প্রতিগৃহ্ণাতি will follow, সঃ বীরঃ he is a hero, পুরুষোত্তমঃ the best of men.

'(On the other hand) he who honours his promise, whether good or bad, is truly heroic, the best of men.'
কৃতার্থা হ্যকৃতার্থানাং মিত্রাণাং ন ভবন্তি যে৷

তান্মৃতানপি ক্রব্যাদাঃ কৃতঘ্নান্নোপভুঞ্জতে4.30.73৷৷


কৃতার্থাঃ one who has achieved his objective, যে whoever, অকৃতার্থানাম্ of the needy man, মিত্রাণাম্ to the friends, ন ভবন্তি not help, মৃতান্ after death, কৃতঘ্নান্ ungrateful people, তান্ them, ক্রব্যাদাঃ অপি even by carnivorous animals, ন উপভুঞ্জতে not like to eat.

'Even the carnivorous animals dislike to eat the body of such ungrateful men who do not help their friends even though they have received help and have achieved their
objective.'

'Surely he wishes to see the form of my bow inlaid with gold bent by me to its full length, looking like a streak of lightning.

'Perhaps he wants once again to hear when enraged in a combat, the dreadful twang of my bow, resembling the peal of a thunderbolt .

'O prince! knowing my valour fully welI, and knowing that you are here to help me he is unhesitatingly revelling in sensual pleasures.

সমযং নাভিজানাতি কৃতার্থঃ প্লবগেশ্বরঃ4.30.77৷৷


পরপুরঞ্জযঃ one who can conquer the enemy's capital, যদর্থম্ what for, অযম্ this, আরম্ভঃ effort, কৃতঃ one who made, সমযম্ promise কৃতার্থঃ one who has achieved his goal, প্লবগেশ্বরঃ king of monkeys, নাভিজানাতি does not realise.

'O conqueror of the enemy capital! the monkey lord who has achieved his goal does not realise the importance of my mission.

হরীশ্বরঃ Sugriva, বর্ষাসমযকালম্ in the rainy season, প্রতিজ্ঞায having sworn, বিহরন্ revelling, ব্যতীতান্ spent, চতুরঃ four, মাসান্ months, নাববুধ্যতে he is not aware.

'Having promised (to search for Sita) after the rainy season,Sugriva is not aware that he has (already) spent the four months-revelling.

'Sporting with the council of ministers surrounding him, resorting to drinking, he shows no compassion to us feeling wretched with grief.

'O mighty warrior! O dear, go to Sugriva and make him aware of the virulence of my anger and tell him:

সুগ্রীব! Sugriva, সমযে as per pledge, তিষ্ঠ abide, হতঃ killed, বালী Vali, যেন by the root, গতঃ had gone, পন্থাঃ path, ন চ সঙ্কুচিতঃ is not a narrow one, বালিপথম্ Vali's path, মা অন্বগাঃ you do not follow.

'The route by which Vali departed, killed by me has not been closed. O Sugriva! you ought to abide by the pledge given. Do not follow the path of Vali.
এক এব রণে বালী শরেণ নিহতো মযা৷

ত্বাং তু সত্যাদতিক্রান্তং হনিষ্যামি সবান্ধবম্4.30.82৷৷


মযা by me, রণে in a combat, শরেণ by an arrow, একঃ one, বালী এব Vali alone, হতঃ killed, সত্যাত্ from the truth, অতিক্রান্তম্ deviated from the truth, ত্বাং তু you also, সবান্ধবম্ along with your near and dear, হনিষ্যামি I will kill.

'Vali was killed by me in the battle with a single arrow while I shall kill you now along with your near and dear ones since you have deviated from the truth.'
তদেবং বিহিতে কার্যে যদ্ধিতং পুরুষর্ষভ!৷

তত্তদ্ভ্রূহি নরশ্রেষ্ঠত্বর কালব্যতিক্রমঃ4.30.83৷৷


পুরুষর্ষভ O bull among men, নরশ্রেষ্ট O king among monkeys, তত্ therefore, কার্যে in the task, এবম্ in this way, বিহিতে when carried out, যত্ all that, হিতম্ is good, তত্ all that, ব্রূহি tell, ত্বর be quick, কালব্যতিক্রমঃ time is passing.

'O bull among men! O hero! speak to him that all that is done in time is done well. Hurry up. Ask him to do whatever is good for him as well as for us:
কুরুষ্ব সত্যং মযি বানরেশ্বর!

প্রতিশ্রুতং ধর্মমবেক্ষ্য শাশ্বতম্৷

মা বালিনং প্রেত্য গতো যমক্ষযং

'O lord of monkeys! Carry out the promise you made to me, consider it to be eternal dharma. Slain by my arrows, you will see Vali in the abode of the lord of death.'

On seeing Rama, the protector of the human race, wailing Lakshmana of terrific lustre hardened his stand against Sugriva and proceeded, charged with intense anger.
