[Lakshmana meets Sugriva --- reminds him of his promise to Rama.]

তমপ্রতিহতং ক্রুদ্ধং প্রবিষ্টং পুরুষর্ষভম্৷

সুগ্রীবো লক্ষ্মণং দৃষ্ট্বা বভূব ব্যথিতেন্দ্রিযঃ৷৷4.34.1৷৷


সুগ্রীবঃ Sugriva, অপ্রতিহতম্ who could not be obstructed, প্রবিষ্টম্ entered, ক্রুদ্ধম্ angry one, পুরুষর্ষভম্ a bull among men, তং him, লক্ষ্মণম্ Lakshmana, দৃষ্ট্বা seeing, ব্যথিতেন্দ্রিযঃ senses depressed, বভূব became.

On seeing the angry Lakshmana, a bull among men, who could not be obstructed, enter in, Sugriva was disturbed.
ক্রুদ্ধং নিশ্শ্বসমানং তং প্রদীপ্তমিব তেজসা৷

ভ্রাতুর্ব্যসনসন্তপ্তং দৃষ্ট্বা দশরথাত্মজম্৷৷4.34.2৷৷

উত্পপাত হরিশ্রেষ্ঠো হিত্বা সৌবর্ণমাসনম্৷

মহান্মহেন্দ্রস্য যথা স্বলঙ্কৃত ইব ধ্বজঃ৷৷4.34.3৷৷


ক্রুদ্ধম্ enraged, নিশ্শ্বসমানম্ sighing heavily, তেজসা lustrous, প্রদীপ্তমিব as if glowing, ভ্রাতুঃ brother's, ব্যসনসন্তপ্তম্ burning with sorrow, তম্ him, দশরথাত্মজম্ son of Dasaratha, দৃষ্ট্বা on seeing, হরিশ্রেষ্ঠ: best of vanaras, সৌবর্ণম্ golden, আসনম্ seat, হিত্বা quitting, মহেন্দ্রস্য Mahendra's, ধ্বজঃ banner, স্বলঙ্কৃতঃ decorated, মহান্ great, ইব like, উত্পপাত jumped up.

Seeing enraged Lakshmana, son of Dasaratha, sighing heavily, glowing like bright fire burning with the sorrow of Rama, Sugriva jumped out of his seat quitting the decorated golden throne just as Indra's decorated banner is raised up suddenly.

সুগ্রীবং গগনে পূর্ণচন্দ্রং তারাগণা ইব৷৷4.34.4৷৷


রুমাপ্রভৃতযঃ Ruma and others, স্ত্রিযঃ women, উত্পতন্তম্ jumped up, সুগ্রীবম্ Sugriva, গগনে in the sky, পূর্ণম্ full, চন্দ্রম্ Moon, তারাগণা cluster of stars, ইব like, অনূত্পেতু: jumped up.

As soon as Sugriva jumped up ,Ruma and other women-folk rose to their feet like the clusters of stars around the full-Moon in the sky.

বভূবাবস্থিতস্তত্র কল্পবৃক্ষো মহানিব৷৷4.34.5৷৷


সংরক্তনযনঃ red-eyed, শ্রীমান্ prosperous, কৃতাঞ্জলিঃ offered salutations with folded palms, বিচচাল was shaken, মহান্ great, কল্পবৃক্ষঃ ইব like the Kalpa tree, তত্র there, অবস্থিতঃ stood, বভূব became.

With eyes red as blood through drunkenness,prosperous Sugriva was shaken like the Kalpa tree.He stood there and offered salutations(to Lakshmana) with folded hands.
রুমাদ্বিতীযং সুগ্রীবং নারীমধ্যগতং স্থিতম্৷

অব্রবীল্লক্ষ্মণঃ ক্রুদ্ধস্সতারং শশিনং যথা৷৷4.34.6৷৷


সতারম্ surrounded by stars, শশিনং যথা like the Moon, রুমাদ্বিতীযম্ along with Ruma, নারীমধ্যগতম্ surrounded by women, স্থিতম্ who stood, সুগ্রীবম্ Sugriva, ক্রুদ্ধঃ infuriated, লক্ষ্মণঃ to Lakshmana, অব্রবীত্ said.

Looking at Sugriva surrounded by Ruma and other women like the Moon among stars, infuriated Lakshmana said;
সত্ত্বাভিজনসম্পন্নস্সানুক্রোশো জিতেন্দ্রিযঃ৷

কৃতজ্ঞস্সত্যবাদী চ রাজা লোকে মহীযতে৷৷4.34.7৷৷


সত্ত্বাভিজনসম্পন্নঃ heir of a noble clan, সানুক্রোশঃ compassionate, জিতেন্দ্রিযঃ one who has controlled his senses, কৃতজ্ঞঃ grateful person, সত্যবাদী চ one who is truthful, রাজা king, লোকে in the world, মহীযতে will excel.

'Only a king who is an heir to a noble family, compassionate, and self-controlled, grateful and truthful excels in the world.
যস্তু রাজা স্থিতোধর্মে মিত্রাণামুপকারিণাম্৷

মিথ্যা প্রতিজ্ঞাং কুরুতে কো নৃশংসতরস্ততঃ৷৷4.34.8৷৷


যঃ whoever, রাজা a king, অধর্মে in unrighteous path, স্থিতঃ adopts, উপকারিণাম্ to his benefactors, মিথ্যা false, প্রতিজ্ঞাম্ promise, কুরুতে makes, ততঃ then, নৃশংসতরঃ more malicious, কঃ what

'Which king can be more malicious than the one who makes false promises and adopts an unrighteous path towards those who helped him?
শতমশ্বানৃতে হন্তি সহস্রং তু গবানৃতে৷

আত্মানং স্বজনং হন্তি পুরুষঃ পুরুষানৃতে৷৷4.34.9৷৷


পুরুষঃ man, অশ্বানৃতে tells a lie about a horse, শতম্ hundred, হন্তি kills, গবানৃতে tells a lie about a cow, সহস্রম্ thousand, পুরুষানৃতে a lie about a man, আত্মানম্ himself, স্বজনম্ his own people, হন্তি kills.

'If a man tells a lie about a horse, he commits the sin of killing a hundred horses. If one tells a lie about a cow, he shares the sin of killing a thousand cows. If one tells a lie about a man, it is equal to the sin of killing oneself and his own people.

কৃতঘ্নস্সর্বভূতানাং স বধ্যঃ প্লবগেশ্বর!৷৷4.34.10৷৷


প্লগেশ্বর O lord of monkeys, পূর্বম্ first, কৃতার্থঃ is fulfilled, যঃ whoever, মিত্রাণাম্ to the
friends, তত্ that, প্রতিকরোতি does not help in turn, কৃতঘ্নঃ an ungrateful one, সঃ he, সর্বভূতানাম্ to all beings, বধ্যঃ deserves to be killed.

'O lord of monkeys! he who, having accomplished his task first with the help of his friend, does not return the help is ungrateful. Such a person deserves to be killed.It applies to all beings.
গীতোযং ব্রহ্মণা শ্লোক স্সর্বলোকনমস্কৃতঃ৷

দৃষ্ট্বা কৃতঘ্নং ক্রুদ্ধেন তন্নিবোধ প্লবঙ্গম!৷৷4.34.11৷৷


প্লবঙ্গম O lord of the monkeys, কৃতঘ্নম্ an ungrateful one, দৃষ্ট্বা on seeing, ক্রুদ্ধেন by an outraged, ব্রহ্মণা by a brahmin, সর্বলোকনমস্কৃতঃ revered by all the worlds, অযম্ this, শ্লোকঃ verse, গীতঃ is sung, তত্ that, নিবোধ listen.

'O lord of the monkeys here is a verse worthy of appreciation by all the worlds, sung by a brahmin, when he saw an ungrateful person. Listen:
ব্রহ্মঘ্নে চ সুরাপে চ চোরে ভগ্নব্রতে তথা৷

নিষ্কৃতির্বিহিতা সদ্ভি: কৃতঘ্নে নাস্তি নিষ্কৃতিঃ৷৷4.34.12৷৷


ব্রহ্মঘ্নে one who kills a brahmin, সুরাপে চ and a drunkard, চোরে by thieves, তথা similarly, ভগ্নব্রতে one who violates sacred vows, সদ্ভি: pious men, নিষ্কৃতিঃ expiation, বিহিতা is provided, কৃতঘ্নে for an ungrateful one, নিষ্কৃতিঃ such an atonement, নাস্তি not there.

'There is expiation for one who kills a brahmin, a drunkard, a thief and a violator of sacred vows. But there is no atonement for an ungrateful man.'
অনার্যস্ত্বং কৃতঘ্নশ্চ মিথ্যাবাদী চ বানর!৷

পূর্বং কৃতার্থো রামস্য ন তত্প্রতিকরোষি যত্৷৷4.34.13৷৷


বানর! O monkey!, পূর্বম্ in the past, কৃতার্থঃ one whose object is achieved, ত্বম্ you, যত্ since, রামস্য Rama's, ন প্রতিকরোষি not helped in return, তত্ that, অনার্যঃ ignoble one,
কৃতঘ্নশ্চ ungrateful, মিথ্যাবাদী চ one who is a liar, ননু you are surely.

'O monkey! you have already achieved your objective (with the help of Rama) but have not helped Rama in return. You are surely an ignoble and ungrateful liar.
ননু নাম কৃতার্থেন ত্বযা রামস্য বানর৷

সীতাযা মার্গণে যত্নঃ কর্তব্যঃ কৃতমিচ্ছতা৷৷4.34.14৷৷


বানর monkey, কৃতার্থেন by a grateful one, রামস্য Rama's, কৃতম্ task, ইচ্ছতা intending, ত্বযা by you, সীতাযাঃ Sita's, মার্গ in search, যত্নঃ attempt, ননু নাম কর্তব্যঃ it should be taken up indeed.

'O monkey, if you are grateful to Rama you should wish to search for Sita. Indeed, you should make efforts to take it up.
স ত্বং গ্রাম্যেষু ভোগেষু সক্তো মিথ্যাপ্রতিশ্রবঃ৷

ন ত্বাং রামো বিজানীতে সর্পং মণ্ডূকরাবিণম্৷৷4.34.15৷৷


মিথ্যাপ্রতিশ্রবঃ who has made false promises, সঃ he, ত্বম্ you, গ্রাম্যেষু ভোগেষু worldy pleasures, সক্তঃ engaged in, রামঃ Rama, ত্বাম্ you, মণ্ডূকরাবিণম্ croaking like a frog, সর্পম্ serpent, ন বিজানীতে did not identify.

'You have failed to keep your word. You are engaged in worldly pleasures. Rama did not know that you are a serpent croaking like a frog.
মহাভাগেন রামেণ পাপঃ করুণবেদিনা৷

হরীণাং প্রাপিতো রাজ্যং ত্বং দুরাত্মা মহাত্মনা৷৷4.34.16৷৷


মহাভাগেন by the illustrious, মহাত্মনা by the great self, করুণবেদিনা by the compassionate, রামেণ by Rama, পাপঃ sinner, দুরাত্মা evil-minded, ত্বম্ you, হরীণাম্ monkeys', রাজ্যম্ kingdom, প্রাপিতঃ granted.

'Rama is illustrious, compassionate and great. He has granted the kingdom to you, to one who is a sinner and an evil-minded person.
কৃতং চেন্নাভিজানীষে রামস্যাক্লিষ্টকর্মণঃ৷

সদ্যস্ত্বং নিশিতৈর্ভাবার্হতো দ্রক্ষ্যসি বালিনম্৷৷4.34.17৷৷


ত্বম্ you, অক্লিষ্টকর্মণঃ of a man who accomplishes a task with ease, রামস্য of Rama, কৃতম্ help, নাভিজানীষে যদি if you did not recognise, সদ্যঃ presently, নিশিতৈঃ by sharp ones, বাণৈঃ with arrows, হতঃ kill, বালিনম্ to Vali, দ্রক্ষ্যসে you may see.

'If you do not recognise the help of Rama who can accomplish any deed with ease, you will be killed with my sharp arrows and meet Vali (in heaven).
ন চ সঙ্কুচিতঃ পন্থা যেন বালী হতো গতঃ৷

সমযে তিষ্ঠ সুগ্রীব! মা বালিপথমন্বগাঃ৷৷4.34.18৷৷


সুগ্রীব! O Sugriva, সমযে by agreement, তিষ্ঠ stand by, হতঃ killed, বালী Vali, যেন by whichever path, গতঃ gone, পন্থাঃ path, ন চ সঙ্কুচিতঃ is not a narrow one, বালিপথম্ the path of Vali, মা অন্বগাঃ do not follow him.

'O Sugriva! the path by which Vali went is not closed.I wish you do not follow him. You stand by the promise made.

চ্যুতান্ শরান্পশ্যসি বজ্র সন্নিভান্৷

তত স্সুখং নাম নিষেবসে সুখী৷

ন রামকার্যং মনসাপ্যবেক্ষসে৷৷4.34.19৷৷


নূনম্ surely, ইক্ষ্বাকুবরস্য of the renowned among the Ikshvaku race, কার্মুক bow, বজ্রসন্নিভান্ comparable to a thunderbolt, চ্যুতান্ released, শরান্ arrows, ন পশ্যসি you do not see, ততঃ
then, সুখী without fear, সুখম্ a happy, নিষেবসে নাম you are resorting to, মনসাপি even in your mind, রামকার্যম্ Rama's work, ন অবেক্ষসে not thinking.

'You have not seen the thunderbolt-like arrows released from the bow of Rama, the renowned prince of the Ikshvaku race. Therefore you are resorting to enjoyment without any fear and have not given thought to Rama's work.'
